"And at this point, I almost screamed."

Kellie and Daphne go back to Chicago one last time to learn what's beyond the fence in Allegiant (2013)--and it's a lot to take in. We get into the extreme pivots that this finale makes, discuss that controversial ending, and try to understand what it was all for. Plus, a priceless ($5) gift is given.

Kellie, Daphne, and special guest Colin take on the shuckin' Maze, and spoiler alert: there's running (but maybe less than you'd think?). Kellie and Daphne continue their break from our regularly scheduled programming to talk about the Divergent movies. Rants and tangents ensue. We also take a moment to discuss and respond to criticisms of Veronica Roth's 2018 post-Allegiant-epilogue epilogue short story, "We Can Be Mended." Plus, a very special announcement!

10 May 2024"Debbies All the Way Down" | Turtles All the Way Down (Special Episode!)00:38:48

We deviate from our usual book recaps to discuss something very special: John Green's Turtles All the Way Down (2017) and the movie adaptation that FINALLY came out this month on Max. Heads up, his one's a little loose and goofy. Several rants occur, we unleash our wrath on Goodreads, and a friendship is tested.

21 Jun 2024"The Age Thing" | Vampire Academy00:55:36

“I don’t believe in banning books. But I think this book should be banned.”

We’re not gonna lie. This one is bleak. Like, “We cut a whole plot point from the recording because the episode was already too dark” bleak. But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of fun to be had as we break down Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy (2007).

19 Jul 2024“A Cultural MOMENT” | The Fault in Our Stars01:07:46

“We might have to start a spin-off podcast where we just watch Willem Dafoe movies.”

It’s our first contemporary novel, and we decided to go straight to the top. Arguably the most emblematic and decidedly the most successful book of its era, it’s John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars (2012). We laugh, reminisce on our youths, ponder human existence, and try not to cry throughout this very big episode. Apologies in advance for our attempts to pronounce Lidewij. Okay? Okay.

02 Aug 2024"Literally the Most Special Girl" | Matched00:44:51

“Ky is SUCH a hot boy name.”

We asked our Instagram followers what book we should read next and there was a clear winner—so keep that in mind as you hear our thoughts on Ally Condie’s Matched (2010). This book bravely explores the question, “What if the classic dystopian teen love triangle was pretty much the whole thing?” and we try our best to present nuanced takes on the subject material.

“I don’t want to stop being pretty. Being pretty’s awesome!”

It's a sequel episode! Kellie and Daphne return to Scott Westerfeld's trendsetting Uglies series to discuss Pretties (2005) in the wake of the upcoming Netflix adaptation. What great timing for us, right? It’s totally bubbly-making. Also included are our thoughts on the Uglies trailer, a Pandemonium recap, and Kellie learning the plot of The 100 for the first time.

Kellie, Daphne, and special guest Mara embark on a very exciting journey into the world of Kass Morgan’s The 100 (2013). We cover the book, CW series, fandom, controversies, and more in this episode in a manner befitting its high drama. 13 Sep 2024"A Very Special Episode" | Specials00:46:33

“Scott, you have one move!”

Daphne-la and Kellie-wa are wrapping up Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies with the final book in the main trilogy, Specials (2006). To put it into Tally’s words, this book is extremely random, but we do our best to find meaning within it and not sound like total bubbleheads. We’ll be back next week to talk about the movie!

"Collapsed lung, ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, brain contusions, broken ribs, and leg and face abrasions requiring skin grafts."

Kellie and Daphne deviate from their usual fare this week to discuss Gayle Forman's acclaimed novel, If I Stay (2009), a book that caused us physical reactions from heaving sobs to incapacitating laughter. Despite the somber subject matter, we still manage to have fun discussing punk rock, Yo-Yo Ma, Oregon culture, ghost rules, and more.

We're back with another dystopian novel and this one is...actually good? Our hosts are rejoined by special guest Katie to discuss Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds (2012). As we hit the road with Ruby and company, Daphne and Katie tell Kellie about the series, Katie and Kellie teach Daphne more Southern cultural nuances, and everyone in the room, including the cat, gets really excited about Harris Dickinson. 25 Oct 2024"Aura of Creepiness" | Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children00:57:15

“This book is basically Citizen Kane.”

Happy Halloween! We read Ransom Riggs’ fantastical 2013 novel/found photography collection, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, to celebrate. It’s not nearly as haunting as we remember—at least, not in terms of ghosts and ghouls. Plus, Kellie finally finished the Delirium series! Stick around until the end to hear her recap the final book of the trilogy, Requiem, for Daphne.

“Why was that a detail?"

We’ve read a few contemporary books on this show, but none that made us self-reflect on the nature of hosting a fan podcast and experiencing the other side of fandom through our relationships with our listeners as much as Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl (2013).

Just kidding. This book is crazy! Daphne and Kellie recap the college coming-of-age story and talk fanfic, young love, and one major historic event in particular in this episode.

"...Just so you know what level of quirky we're operating at."

Happy holidays! We're celebrating the season by reading Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle's 2008 short story collection, Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances, and trying not to be too grinchy about it. Topics covered span from the Netflix Christmas Universe and Piggy Smalls to an impassioned discussion about a story's gross mischaracterization of Shrek. In addition, we continue spreading the good word of Waffle House and listen to one of the most inspired musical performances of all time.

11 Apr 2025"It's Been a Long Time Coming" | Sunrise on the Reaping01:32:39

“I was genuinely afraid…I might throw up from crying so hard.”

It’s the one you’ve all been waiting for…everything for the past three months has led to this. We’re joined by very special guest Emma Skies to discuss the most anticipated release since we launched our podcast, Sunrise on the Reaping (2025!).

We return to District 12 one more time to cover our initial thoughts and reactions, fan theories, Panem and America, Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate’s balance between art and commerce, and what this book means to The Hunger Games series’ legacy. We lose track of how many times we use the words "brutal" and "devastating." This is our longest episode yet and we easily could’ve talked about this book for another hour because there’s so much to dig into!

Correction: Francis Lawrence is coming back for the 5th time as director if you count the Mockingjays separately!

Correction 2: I just learned that we’ve been pronouncing azure wrong. Oops.
