11 Jun 2021 | 227. Buried a Lie by Sense Fail | 00:54:56
“In Ancient Chinese philosophy, yin and yang is a concept of dualism, describing how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.” (source: Wikipedia, obviously) There may be no other dualism like the song for Buried a Lie and the music video for Buried a Lie. The lyrics are intense, the stakes are high, and there’s been a murder. The music video on the other hand, while on paper follows the song to a T, reflects a kind of Scooby-Doo, daytime soap opera fever dream of sorts that is very entertaining to watch. “The relationship between yin and yang is often described in terms of sunlight playing over a mountain and a valley.” If this video is the sun, the song is a valley of despair, but damn do they make one handsome mountain scene or whatever.

02 Oct 2020 | 191. I'm Just a Kid by Simple Plan | 00:48:20
Simple Plan was really on to something when they wrote I’m Just a Kid almost 20 years ago. If we’re being honest, we’re 29 and our lives still feel like a nightmare most days. The guys take some time to discuss how they resonated with this song back in the day, how they perpetually feel like dumb, lost kids, the movie New Guy, long pinchy sunglasses, writing on a rock that made the neighbor/child therapist very concerned, and Pat introduced a new game, but at the time of writing these show notes, I sincerely forget what the game was. Sorry, and thank you as always.

21 Dec 2018 | 106. The Stacy's Mom Power Hour | 00:47:48
The music video for Stacy’s Mom is problematic at best, and the guys get down to the bottom of it. There’s a lot of speculation over what Stacy’s mother does for work, if the young boy is running a reputable landscaping company or just filling in for a few mows, and whether or not Stacy herself is deserving of his love. Adam Schlesinger strikes again in this hit single from the early 2000s.

Taylor Swift dropped her reputation Stadium Tour documentary on Netflix this week, and there’s no way the guys weren’t jumping on it as soon as possible. As referenced in their earlier episode reviewing the record, neither Pat nor Tom were the biggest fans of the record, but they thought maybe seeing them performed live would breathe some new life into the songs, which turned out to be very true for some of the numbers.

It’s Tom’s birthday, so Pat is throwing him a bone and letting him talk about 1999’s All The Small Things by Blink-182. The biggest song that we’ve talked about to date at 5x platinum, Enema of the State shook the entire earth as well as Tom’s entire life. We reflect on how different Tom’s life could have been if he never discovered this album in his sister’s bedroom that an old friend left behind, and discuss all the spoofs in the iconic music video.

23 Oct 2020 | 194. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day | 00:51:26
While Wake Me Up When September Ends was originally written in remembrance of Bill Joe’s father, the sheer reach and gravity of the song allowed for many different interpretations. The one that Green Day really seemed to run with was the 9/11 theme, and holy hell did they lean in for the music video. This thing is over 7 minutes long people, with nearly 4 minutes of dialogue embedded in the video. It’s a big one, but allow Tom to lighten the mood a bit with a weird outdoor sex story.

Cute Without the E (Cut From The Team) is probably one of the first songs one would pull out of their brain when trying to name any Taking Back Sunday song they screamed at the top of their lungs throughout the entirety of their high school career. It’s one of the most raw, powerful, and angsty songs in their entire catalog! This week the guys rewatched Fight Club in an attempt to better appreciate how flawlessly the band recreated the movie, managing to condense the entire narrative into three and a half minutes.

After absolutely bungling the Futures episode, we attempt to make it up to Jimmy Eat World (who desperately need our validation) by talking about… their most successful song to date. Then Tom gets really sweaty and talks about a kid getting slapped while trying to sleep at his 14th birthday party. Idk. Back to Jimmy Eat World In 2001, the record industry turned their back on James and they retaliated by releasing one of the biggest songs of the year, The Middle, which stands for the finger they gave to Capitol Records for dropping them just a couple of years prior. Let’s break down the song and music video in the week’s episode.

25 Oct 2019 | 142. Ohio is for Lovers by Hawthorne Heights: The Emo Anthem | 01:00:48
Often described as “the emo anthem”, Hawthorne Height’s single Ohio is for Lovers played a very important role in the culture of the early 2000’s emo scene. The guys speculate on what it is about Ohio that makes people write such sad music, if writing so candidly about sensitive topics such as depression, self-harm, and suicide ended up being a good thing for teens to become immersed in, and about the VFW energy that Hawthorne Heights managed to bring to their many live on television appearances.

Panic! At the Disco dropped their debut album “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out” in late 2005 and kind of took the entire world by storm. At that time, the whole circus freak vibe wasn’t super mainstream (was it ever?) and music THAT catchy wasn’t often heard side by side with such outlandish imagery. However, Panic! had just the right amount of something that made them a massive success. 30 Seconds to Mars isn’t a band we typically think of when we go back to the emo well, but after seeing the music video for The Kill (Bury Me), it all makes sense. There’s movie references, creepy dudes in Tuxedos, women dripping in blood, gorilla suits, and eyeliner. Oh man, is there eyeliner. While this isn’t a video you go to if you want to enjoy the song, the band really goes to great lengths to pay homage to a classic film and build a compelling story that may fail to tie up some loose ends at points, but ultimately delivers a very pleasant 4.5 minutes of visuals to accompany a very great song.

28 Feb 2020 | 160. Sugar, We're Goin Down by Fall Out Boy, the Music Video | 00:58:51
The year is 2005, and pop punk is taking over the radio waves. The guitars are heavy, the bass is thrashing, and the lyrics are coming atcha fast. At the center of all of this was Fall Out Boy with the massive hit ‘Sugar We’re Goin Down’. Even the kids in our high school who didn’t like rock were singing this in the hallways. It was everywhere. It’s the song that turned Tom and Pat’s high school band into what it was, and if there’s anything that’s better than this song, it’s most definitely the music video. Music video director Matt Lenski did more in 3 minutes and 50 seconds than most filmmaker do in 90 minutes, told a compelling and heartwarming story about a boy who loves a girl, a man who hates a boy, but turns out to actually hate himself. It was very well done, finger-licking salute and all.

30 Apr 2021 | 221. The 2005 Emo Madness Tournament | 01:04:25
In a showdown like no other, releases from the year 2005 battle to claim the title of best song of the year. We randomized a 64 competitor bracket and put songs head to head and it was messed up in every single way imaginable. We disagreed many steps along the way, but ultimately we worked together to crown the #1 song released in the year 2005. And the results may shock you, one of us almost DIED, and other YouTube and cringe-worthy hooks like that.

After a storm of housekeeping, including but not limited to, the Taylor Swift Book Club, seeing Kelly Clarkson in concert, and several apologies for last week’s episode, the guy dig into the new “Supergroup” from Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, “Simple Creatures”. The guys discuss whether or not this album is objectively good, whether or not they actually like it, will it make future road trip playlists, is it “cool kid music” and who would actually be jamming this EP on the regular. This last bit is met with wild speculation involving some college kids, a Bluetooth speaker from Wal-Mart, and failed joints rolled in student sponsored housing. It gets weird.

14 Dec 2018 | 105. The Sum 41 Hour of Power | 00:52:14
The Sum 41 special is finally here, and its dedicated it in it’s entirety to Amanda. If you’re anyone other than the Queen herself, please stop reading now. The guys can’t help but compare Sum 41 to Blink-182, which leads to a lengthy discussion on can they be compared, and more importantly, SHOULD they be compared. They then blew open a conspiracy about the bedrock in Ajax, Ontario possibly being too high to support inground pools, leading Zach to believe that the music video for In Too Deep was shot out of the country, and if true, can the band be trusted? Are they even Canadian? Who am I?

17 Mar 2022 | 267. Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly | 00:57:13
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends! As many as you may know or have guessed by now, we’re both hella Irish, so we’re happy to talk about the most Irish song we know, Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly. (Suck it, Irish National Anthem!) The song is great year-round, but it hits especially hard on St. Patty’s Day. But the VIDEO! Dear Christ, the video is so good. It’s basically just a skate film featuring Patrick Melcher and you won’t catch either of us complaining about it. It rules! Erin Go Bragh!

05 Nov 2021 | 248. King For a Day by Pierce The Veil (Pat's Birthday Extravaganza!!!) | 00:52:25
It’s Pat’s birthday so we’re breaking decade and going DEEP into a song that has totally overtaken his life, King For a Day by Pierce the Veil. This is a band that, honestly, neither of us have ever listened to before YouTube shoved this thing down our throats for months, but who are we to question the algorithm? it always knows best. This banger from 2012 has become a staple on emo Twitter/meme culture, largely due to its absolutely incredible music video of some scrappy young bank tellers who make a grown man piss his pants because they had to come into work on a Saturday. it’s just… the best. 26 Feb 2021 | 212. Rock Bottom at the Renaissance, an Interview with Mike Henneberger: Emo Kid, Best- Selling Author, and Emmy Winning Producer and Journalist | 01:43:58
Mike Henneberger stops by to talk with the guys about some super heavy themes that are super present in all the songs and bands we talk about every week. Staples of the genre include depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and helplessness. I mean, it’s not called emo for nothing… 10 years ago, Mike spent a hopeless weekend in a downtown NYC hotel room and penned an autobiography on some of the worst days of his life and how they align with the lyrics of some of his favorite songs that he holds dear. It’s important to know that no matter how low it feels, there’s always a reason to keep fighting for your life. There is a reason for you, your story matters, and your life matters. But it’s not all that heavy, the guys also talk about the role that Christianity played in the music scene in the 90s and 2000’s, Mike tells some tales of working at Hot Topic, and Taylor Swift, Weezer, and The Killers make an appearance. Mike also tells his reason for choosing Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey as the narrator of his upcoming audiobook.

10 Apr 2020 | 166. Adam Schlesinger: The King of Power Pop | 00:56:57
One of the greatest moments in this show’s history is when we realized Adam Schlesinger wrote an absolute TON of songs we’ve enjoyed over the years. Adam was extremely prolific in his career as a song writer for multiple Grammy winning and nominated bands, in addition to TV and film, and he even claimed a Tony win for the writing of Cry Baby on Broadway. We swore to ourselves we would have Adam on the show some day, but on April 1st he passed away. We were both pretty devastated from the news and decided to take some time to remember the beloved moments we had with his music. He seemed to just understand people and the music they’d love, and a genius like him is a pretty rare thing to discover in their time.

07 Feb 2020 | 157. Gives You Hell by The All American Rejects | 00:59:50
Gives You Hell by The All American Rejects is a multi-platinum masterpiece that swept the world for what felt like years, but there’s SO much to appreciate about this song that we had to take the track piece by piece, and the music video frame by frame. There’s a lot to love about this song that almost didn’t even make it on to the record because the band had such little confidence in it. The music video could easily warrant a 20,000 word thesis, but I’ve got like 1,000 characters so let’s move quickly. This thing matches the song in terms of quality, catchiness, and total inability to consume it only once. There’s SO much going on, and the most interesting part may be the relationship between our antagonist, the young rock star who doesn’t give a flip about nothin’, and our older domesticated board game aficionado “antagonist” and how OUR relationship with those characters has changed over time. All there is to say is we are do appreciate a quiet neighborhood.

The Punk Goes…. series from Fearless Records has been a strange part of the scene since their debut in 1999. Being a victim of their own haste and careless assignments of bands has unleashed more than a handful of truly awful cover songs, but maybe it was all worth it for the few that have stood out from the rest. The guys discuss the best and worst that has come form the series over the years, and close the show out with some life changing breaking news from Tom.

The announcement of the When We Were Young Festival will be one of those moments we look back on in 20 years that are paired with a “where were you when"?" The millisecond that flyer hit Twitter, everyone went nuts. It was pure, unadulterated joy for like, 20 minutes… and then the questions started. And at last, the memes rolled in. Wait, how many bands? HOW many stages? In 24 hours? Who the hell is Car Seat Headrest and what are they doing on this bill? 17 Jan 2020 | 154. Alive with the Glory of Love by Say Anything | 00:50:57
Say Anything is a band that deserves way more love and respect than they got, and probably even more than we were able to give them on this episode. Alive With the Glory of Love was culturally an important song, not just because Tom skanked to it at his wedding in 2018, but primarily for the way it was used in Scrubs to emphasize one of the most pivotal moments on the show (check out our blog post below!) Somehow Say Anything has managed to keep itself from most people’s Mount Rushmore’s of culturally impactful and meaningful groups, but we’d like to make the case that they at least deserve to be a nominee.

05 Feb 2021 | 209. Since U Been Gone by A Day To Remember (as made famous by Kelly Clarkson) | 00:53:17
A Day to Remember is one of those bands that so delicately danced between the lines of pop punk and beatdown hardcore, and it spurned lots of conversations and heated debates as to WHAT this band actually was. But in 2007, on some B-sides on a re-released album called For Those Who Have Heart, the band reminded as all that at the end of the day, almost everything is just pop when they released a BLAZIN’ cover of Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone. Not only did they expertly record a cover that was very true to the original with the perfect amount of their own fingerprint across the song, they also released a music video with a similar vibe… true to the original, and uniquely excellent. Also… we’re starting a cult and we’re all gonna live together in the “Reminest”. You in?

The Blink-182 family tree saw a huge growth to it’s branch system when Tom DeLonge released the first full length album “We Don’t Need to Whisper” with Angels & Airwaves in 2006. For just over 14 years the ambient sounds of chains, boots, walkie-talkies, and super delayed but vaguely familiar guitar riffs have blessed our boomboxes and iPods and you’d be hard pressed to take this record from our cold dead hands. One of the hosts of the show thinks this album is an absolute masterpiece and adores nearly every song on this record, meanwhile another host thinks it’s all just okay. However, one thing the guys CAN agree on is this album is a very welcome addition to the Blink family tree.

How was such a great song paired with such a misguided music video? Pat and Tom make an attempt to break down all that went wrong in the music video for The Curse of Curves, but there’s almost nothing to even say. There’s a lot of hair, no food, the most awkward glances you’ve ever seen in your life, and poison that has the ability to throw you backwards in your chair. Khaki rock is back baby, and we’re here for it! Andrew McMahon graces our screens with some sensible slacks, no shoes, and multiple microphones. There’s not much to the video, a few dudes being dudes, hanging out in Canda on a day off from touring. They seem both exhausted and energized by the camera lenses pointed at them, and they deliver a totally fun performance and some oh-so-relatable yard game shots. Since the video itself isn’t too involved, we really dive heavily into our own about hating the newspaper, journalism students quoting Wikipedia on a college essay, Tom giving a 15-minute speech on crop circles, taking piano lessons, and some tour stories that heavily relate to the lyrics of this amazing song.

10 Dec 2021 | 253. Reinventing Your Exit by Underøath | 00:57:57
Our first foray into the early 2000’s insanity that was Christian metalcore, Christ-core for short, lands us at the “Reinventing Your Exit” music video by a band that has recently renounced their religious affiliation, Underøath. They’re Only Chasing Safety walked so that albums like Someday Came Suddenly could sprint at freak-like speeds. Still, there’s something about Underøath’s first effort with new vocalist Spencer Chamberlain that has yet to be replicated by any band since. The screams are brutal, the singing is transcendent, the shirts are tight, and the belts are bright in this masterpiece of a music video. So buckle up and bring a friend because it’s dangerous business walking into this week’s episode. Make sure to buy the new flash sheet here before they sell out!

The guys talk at great length about the 1997 pop banger "Mmmbop" by Hanson. They both share stories about what moment in time the songs makes them think about, whether or not it's actually a good song, and break down the lyrics, undeservedly, to a microscopic level. Also, Pat got engaged over the weekend, so that's cool!

12 Mar 2021 | 214. This Ain't a Scene by Fall Out Boy | 01:04:57
Hot off the tail of the Dance, Dance music video, This Ain’t a Scene shows a whole different side of the story for Fall Out Boy. The boys experience fame, wealth, tabloids, fake bulges, scandals, and everyone’s dream of trashing a hotel room (except for Tom and Pat, they’re too post-catholic to handle that kind of guilt). But it turns out it kinda sucks? We think that’s the narrative of this 2 part music video? Either way, it’s a super fun ride that the guys break apart piece by piece while indulging in personal stories of nightmares and that one time they “trashed” a DC hotel room.

29 Oct 2021 | 247. Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry by Relient K | 00:51:03
The cart jumps off the rails immediately as we dive right into memories of our sophomore lockdown when we originally meant to talk about our junior trip to Six Flags, when we originally meant to talk about Relient K. Chap Stick… was easily one of our most played songs in high school, and the lyrics offer a really awesome glimpse into early 2000’s tech, which most of the listeners of this show I’m sure can relate to if they dig deep enough back into their brains. There are also some pretty gnarly theories about the actual meaning of the lyrics which we explore in addition to the great music video and the fine line that Relient K so gracefully danced between being a Christian and being a young man who lives in a very secular world.

The Starting Line wrote on of the best songs of the decade when Best of me Dropped in 2002. It’s been one of the guys favorites since first spin, and they finally take the time to discuss the music video, as argue incessantly about what the hell the lyrics mean. The video plays into the weird quirky humor that surrounded many songs in the genre around that time period, but they seemed to have pulled it off better than most others. Take a deep dive as they break down the frame by frame, and end the episode with a sample of Pod Carnage: Inside the Author’s Studio.

2005 was possibly the best year ever for emo music. It certainly was the best year for Fueled by Ramen, as their roster graced us with several masterpieces like All We Know Is Falling. Pressure will remain one of the angstiest, most soul crushing songs in Paramore’s catalog, and even as grown men, it slays our souls. This week we cover the music video, Tom’s 2007 Warped Tour experience, long nights alone in your mom’s basement, bad jobs, and quitting bad jobs.

If you were to ask 1,000 people what the weirdest video in pop punk is, 1,001 people would respond with All Downhill From Here because Bob is a cheater and he voted twice. The guys do their best to develop the backstory for who these creatures are in the video. who made them, why they’re there, and what does the socio-economic class structure look like for this diverse group of monsters. French animators and music video director Meiert Avis created an extraordinarily insane music video that New Found Glory may or may not have been deserving of. Let us know what you think!

If you’re gonna talk about sad boy, hall of fame albums, you won’t get very far without coming across ‘Give Up’ by The Postal Service. Somehow 150 episodes have gone by without the attention it deserves. The band released 1 single platinum album in the early 2000s, and while one of the guys didn’t take to it immediately, it ended up rattling both of their worlds for years to come. As some sad dudes from the (kinda) mid-west, there was just nothing better than this album, and while each song is loved for different reasons, the guys make an attempt to rank the songs from least to most favorite, and both are a little shocked by their own lists.

With all the metalcore and neon era pop punk that happened in the early 2000’s, it’s easy to forget about the outliers that were actually a much bigger freakin deal than the bands we talk about week after week. One of those outliers (see also: mega successful solo artists) was Christopher Drew of nevershoutnever! Spawning a whole era of straight hair, hands in pockets, cutest cutesy boys, NSN wrote some super catchy songs that made their way into the hearts of many who then repressed the urge sing them at the top of their lungs for fear of being made fun of. Or at least that’s what we felt like at the time. Anyways! We take some time today to sing some praises, as well as discuss the music video which leads to a lot of conversation about the first time we held hands with our first crushes.

17 May 2019 | 127. Linkin Park's Meteora v. Something Corporate's Leaving Through the Window, 5 for 5 | 00:51:17
In a bizarre mashup of sorts, the guys decide to each talk about 2 completely different albums at the same time, inspired by a friend and listener of the show. Tom covers the album Meteora by Linkin Park, and in normal long-winded Tom fashion, it’s full of stories form his adolescence. The album helped him through some serious family trauma as a young teen, motivated him to wear nothing but DC clothing for years, and he even performed a song for three 7th grade girls in his bedroom after an early dismissal day. But he was in 6th grade so it was totally cool. Pat discovered his album Leaving Through the Window”by Something Corporate much later in life after having a few casual interaction in 8th grade along with Tom. One of the songs has strong ties between him and his wife, while others remind him of strolling campus alone as a bushy eyed college freshman.

Happy Halloween everyone! This week we came across one of the strangest, most outlandish, most theatrical, and most fun music videos we’ve ever discussed. The line time is as long as the song name and features damn near every member on the Fueled by Ramen roster. Fall Out Boy really swung for the fences in their dramatic vampire short film that has absolutely nothing to do with the theme of the song, but the payoff was huge. This is truly a work of art, directed by the great Alan Furgeson, that is hella getting us in the mood for Halloween, but in a way that doesn’t make us soil our pants.

It took 11 years to get back to self-producing a record. Bert says he’s learned a lot working with some legendary producers in the genre, but he was excited to get back to producing his own work since no one else has quite been able to capture the signature Chunk! sound. Commit This to Memory is an album that shook our 14 year old souls when it first came out, or in Tom’s case, just a year or two later. It’s no secret that Hoobastank’s music video for The Reason is our favorite heist movie ever, but it recently came to our attention that there’s a sequel! Hooba picks up right where they left off and tell a gripping tale of crime, rock and roll, and betrayal all in three minutes, and somehow managed to outdo themselves once again. However, we want more. Selfishly, but there were also a few loose ends that we’d love to see tied up in a neat bow, so we’re calling on Doug Robb and the boys to expand the Hoobaverse with a 3rd installment to the series, or preferably a feature-length video. If you’d like to see this happen, make sure to sign our change.org petition below.
