With a childhood diagnosis, Cameron Sterling has found things that don’t work (traditional school, Ritalin) and things that do (kinesthetic learning, Adderall, freelancing) and it’s inspiring to hear that journey. Cameron's story is one of the 31 stories we're sharing throughout the month of October to raise awareness on the complexity of ADHD and the different ways it shows up in our lives. 10 May 2023 | Lindsay Hits Reset For Mental Health Awareness Month | 00:46:29
What does it mean to be at capacity? After the last five months, Refocused host Lindsay Guentzel is there -- but if she's honest, she's probably been living at capacity for years. And that's an incredibly difficult place for a person with ADHD to be. Today's episode is full of honesty, some very exciting news and some oversharing, for sure. It's not how the Refocused team wanted to highlight Mental Health Awareness Month but we've learned an important lesson on working with what you got. One topic Lindsay dives into that has some recommended homework with it is the idea of languishing, a topic psychologist and author Adam Grant explored in his April 2021 piece for the New York Times. To support the work we're doing, we've made it a little easier for you to follow “Refocused” on your favorite podcast-listening app and while you’re there, please leave a review - it really helps to spread all the goodness. 26 Oct 2023 | Refocused, Together: Jen Verhagen and Realizing Your Potential | 00:43:42
Jen Verhagen was diagnosed with ADHD five years ago when she was 28, after struggling with insomnia for years. The diagnosis brought so much clarity for the talent acquisition specialist. Like many women diagnosed later in life, Jen excelled in K-12 but found the transition to college difficult, her inability to focus and create her own structure becoming too much for her to overcome. Unaware of what was holding her back – her undiagnosed ADHD – Jen thought she was simply dumb.
Life post-diagnosis has been a season of growth for the 33 year-old Michigan native. After working up the courage to ask for accommodations at a new job, Jen was faced with the fact that there are still people out there unwilling to acknowledge the realities of living with ADHD. Her manager’s dismissal of her needs pushed Jen into a dark place and ultimately led to her leaving the company. The good news is, Jen landed on her feet in a place where she feels supported and encouraged to be herself and to shine as a woman with ADHD.
Listen in to hear more from Jen about her journey with ADHD, why it’s important for people to recognize that ADHDers face an uphill climb every single day and what she hopes can be done to help the world understand a lifelong condition that is anything but one-size-fits-all.

14 Oct 2023 | Refocused, Together: Tyler Page and Not Growing Out Of It | 00:40:56
You’ll grow out of it. It’s something Tyler Page’s doctor told him after he was diagnosed with ADHD with a child. The Eisner-nominated cartoonist and ADHD advocate carried that with him on his journey and realized that while he would never shed his ADHD, he could adapt to it instead of fighting against it.
One of the ways Tyler did that was by sharing this story, offering a candid view on growing up with ADHD in his books Raised on Ritalin - A Personal Story of ADHD, Medication, and Modern Psychiatry and BUTTON PUSHER.

16 Aug 2022 | The Power of the Pivot | 00:58:05
It was Sunday evening. Monday's podcast wasn't done and Lindsay had a choice to make. Pull another all-nighter to get it done or be honest about the struggles she's been facing since launching Refocused with Lindsay Guentzel back in May. Maybe it was because she was tired. Maybe it was because she knew she couldn't keep up the routine she had unintentionally developed. Maybe it was because she was actually comfortable asking for help. Yay, growth!!! Whatever the reason, Lindsay woke up Monday and was honest with everyone -- the latest episode of her podcast wasn't done. No cockamamie excuse, no lies. Just ownership and a plan to make sure it doesn't happen again. And then she decided to pivot. She owed those waiting an epsiode so she decided to record it live. With an audience (sort of, it was virtual but the pressure was there). And the episode she created on the fly -- with the help of Keith Boswell -- is without a doubt better than anything she could have stressed about in the wee hours of the morning earlier that day. Topics include: breaking the history of little white lies, the power of deadlines, hyperfocusing on the wrong thing and the trouble with ADHD and friendships. 09 Jan 2023 | ADHD and Our Relationships with Food | 00:40:47
The New Year can make even the most pessimistic person feel some optimism and if you made a resolution, there's a very good chance you have one of these -- losing weight, eating healthier and exercising more -- on your list. They were the top 3 resolutions Americans made this year, according to Statistia.com. To get you started on your journey, we wanted to dive into the relationship between the ADHD brain and food. Becasuse it is incredibly complex and we know disordered eating is a commorbidity many people with ADHD deal with. But it goes well beyond that and there are conversations happening right now that explore the connection between what we eat and how our brain works -- the gut-brain connection. These complex conversations are ones Dr. Marylin James is having every day with her patients, through her practice Haven Family Health in Jacksonville, Florida and through her work as a telehealth physician at ADHD Online. Dr. James uses her dual board certification in both family medicine and osteopathic manual medicine to provide her patients with the individualization they need. NOTE: The video version of Rach Burton and Embracing The Neurospicy Life As A Deaf ADHDer will be available soon. The full transcript is available here.
When you think about the executive function challenges to get an ADHD diagnosis at the age of 28, imagine doing it as a Deaf woman without the assistance of an American Sign Language interpreter. That’s a common occurrence for a Deaf person when communicating with healthcare professionals.
Today’s guest Rach Burton struggled to access information about ADHD in the months after her diagnosis. So she jumped into researching the condition on her own and then started sharing what she learned on social media. Today, Rach is a mental health advocate focused on improving access to resources and encouraging medical professionals to become more aware of the needs of the Deaf ADHD community. As a mom of two, she hopes to continue fostering greater understanding and acceptance for future generations through meaningful conversations.

24 Jul 2023 | Understanding ADHD & Anxiety – In Our Lives | 00:37:04
We’re trying something a little different this week. We’ve just finished back-to-back episodes with Dr. Marcy Caldwell talking about ADHD & Anxiety, and we thought that it would be good to revisit some of the things in those episodes that resonated with us as neurodivergents. Joining us is Jaye Lin, an ADHD coach, educator, speaker, and podcaster based in the Seattle area. Like many of us, she too has dealt with anxiety. In fact, before her ADHD diagnosis, she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. Also joining the show is Phil Rodemann, the show’s Coordinating Producer, who also has dealt with anxiety many years longer than his ADHD.

27 Oct 2023 | Refocused, Together: Emmanuel Abua and Putting the Pieces Together | 00:42:05
Emmanuel’s journey with ADHD has been going on for a long time. It started when he was 5. A teacher raised concerns and despite his family’s expectations that he would outgrow it – they took him off stimulant medications because of this – Emmanuel struggled with focus and building his own structure throughout school. He excelled on tests and quizzes but homework was a different story and even though he was seen as capable, the transition to college proved challenging. But it is also when he was evaluated for ADHD, marking this frustrating period as a turning point in understanding himself.
Almost a decade later, Emmanuel discovered he was also autistic and he struggled with this news going through bouts of depression and denial. His search for answers led him to the support he needed to accept his dual diagnosis. Through humility and growth, Emmanuel became an advocate for Autism and ADHD awareness, actively engaging with organizations like ADDA and addressing mental health stigmas within the African-American community.
Today, he pursues the work he's passionate about as a freelance writer, speaker, and voiceover artist and has been contributing his talents in the form of short audio stories for NeuroClassic's SoundCloud channel, sharing his unique perspective to help foster understanding.
Listen in to hear Emmanuel share more about his journey with ADHD and Autism, about the importance of connection for the neurodiverse community, and how the progress that’s been made in the neurodivergent community over the last decade is inspiring him to look forward to the future.

Simple tasks seemed complex because she couldn’t find a starting point, and didn’t see a clear set of steps ahead. Let’s set aside the judgment that the title generates and in the nearly 20 years since this all took place Kim has had plenty of time to reflect back on that moment. She has recently released her first book, “Walks Like a Duck: How a Mom with ADHD Led Her Neurodiverse Family to Peace of Mind” and in this episode we get to talk to Kim about the book, her thoughts about her reverse-diagnosis, and what she wishes people knew or understood better about ADHD.

17 Oct 2023 | Refocused, Together: Taking a Breather | 00:04:25

14 Aug 2023 | Understanding ADHD & OCD - In Our Lives with Ashley Jacobs | 00:40:36
Did you know that an estimated 30 percent of patients who have OCD also have ADHD? Dr. Roberto Olivardia shared this statistic 2 weeks ago in our first episode about OCD. We know there is a strong connection between ADHD & OCD, and it is really important to us to not only share clear, precise info about these co-morbidities but also real life examples of how they play out in our lives. This week we are joined by friend of the show Ashley Jacobs, who is graciously sharing real life examples about how ADHD & OCD play out in her life. It’s also interesting that Ashley shared she had never really thought about how her ADHD and OCD coincided with each other until we reached out to her to come on the podcast. REMINDER – if you haven’t listened to our two part series “Understanding ADHD & OCD with Dr. Roberto Olivardia” – this would be a great time to pause and go back 2 episodes. We all think we have an idea of what OCD is, but Roberto does an incredible job of illuminating parts of the disorder that many of us are probably unfamiliar with.

18 Sep 2023 | Understanding Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome with Dr. Zoe Smith | 00:43:53
What the heck is CDS? Google that question and you find page after page of information on Credit Default Swaps or Controlled Dangerous Substances. But there is a CDS that is directly connected to ADHD and it’s likely something you’ve never heard of before.
So what is Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome and what are the symptoms? How is it similar to ADHD and how is it different? CDS is not an officially recognized diagnosis in the DSM-5. It’s currently what’s called a clinical construct - a term used in psychology to define a group of behaviors.
Researchers, including today’s guest Dr. Zoe Smith, have been working for years to get the construct recognized and there is still so much we don’t know about CDS. Without an official diagnosis, it can be hard for providers to identify the signs and symptoms of CDS and Dr. Z is joining us to share what we do know about this relatively unknown comorbid condition.

15 Sep 2023 | Understanding ADHD & Depression - In Our Lives with Ian Hoefelmeyer | 00:34:41
This week, we continue our look at ADHD and depression with our guest, friend of the pod and Mentavi Health and ADHD Online business development representative Ian Hoefelmeyer.
As a kid, Ian was labeled the ‘ADHD kid’ and even though his teachers observed some of ADHD traits, it wasn’t until years later when he was struggling in college that he sought out a diagnosis and then medication. Like so many with ADHD, Ian also struggled with some of ADHD’s comorbidities including depression and it was the sudden isolation of the pandemic, combined with stressors at work, that added fuel to his most recent bout of the mood disorder.
This candid conversation is a reminder of all the different ways depression can show up in a person’s life and the power masking can have on a person’s life. For Ian, that masking was without a doubt his reliance on his sense of humor. He also shares how Cognitive-Behavior Therapy changed his life and what tools he continues to use to make sure he stays mindful and balanced.

Michael A. Cohen is a columnist for MSNBC, a fellow for the Eurasia Group Foundation and is the publisher of the newsletter Truth and Consequences. He also has ADHD and is one of the many Americans who has struggled to fill his Adderall prescription over the last few years. On April 29th, he published the opinion piece, "The Adderall Shortage is the Mental Health Crisis No One's Talking About" on The Daily Beast, sharing parts of his own story intertwined with a handful of interviews he did, including a conversation with Rep. Abigal Spanberger (D-VA). Spanberger is one of the only members of Congress to acknowledge the shortage and the strain it is putting on people right now. Michael recently sat down with Refocused host Lindsay Guentzel for a look at what pushed him to write the piece, as well as a look at what he learned while researching and writing the piece.
