10 May 2023153 - Batman/Superman: World's Finest with Megan Coleman01:45:19

153 - Batman/Superman: World’s Finest

Pairing up Batman and Superman seems like such an obvious move given how fundamentally different these two heroes are. They both strive for justice, but both have different methods of achieving it. It took a long time for them to meet in the pages of DC comics, and even longer before they met on screen. The Batman/Superman Movie set in the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini animated universe was a momentous occasion for fans of their respective shows. Joining us to talk about heroic and villainous team-ups, exploding marbles and fights with robots is Megan Coleman from MASH Minute!

24 Jun 2020097 - Alien301:42:16

097 - Alien3

Which version of Alien3 did we review, you ask? The Theatrical Version or the Assembly Cut? The short answer is; both. See if you can figure out when it starts to dawn on Travis and Patrick that two versions of this film exist. All that aside, we reviewed Alien3, and found it to be undeserving of its bad reputation. Watch one of the versions of it yourself, and let us know what you think.

It was meant to be the “special effects movie event of the year” in 1997. But ultimately, it was a movie that was largely seen as a failure. Spawn may one day return to the big screen. Until that day, we’ll take a closer look into Spawn alongside our guest, Sean Malloy.

05 Oct 2016Reel Comic Heroes 029 - Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back02:09:11

This is a big one, citizens. We're always nervous to tackle some of the classic films on our list. But as we've learned; "Do or do not, there is no try".

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back picks up three years after Luke destroyed the Death Star. Leia, Han, Chewie and C3PO are on the run from Darth Vader and his minions while Luke and R2 seek out an ancient Jedi master to complete his training.

Empire is considered by some to be the best of the entire Saga. Give this a listen to see where we landed on it.

05 Oct 2015Reel Comic Heroes - Announcement 00100:07:27

This week we wanted to discuss some upcoming changes to the show. First off, we're switching the format from an audio commentary podcast to that of a movie review show. Our idea is to make the show more of a conversation, rather than a play-by-play of what is happening on screen. We will continue to use 'The List' established on our website and bring you new episodes every week.

We'll also be adding holiday episodes and other specials. Occasionally we may select specific movies on the list to provide audio commentary on.

Thanks for listening.

14 Feb 2018Reel Comic Heroes 057 - Howard the Duck with Courtney Wheaton01:50:35

It’s a classic tale of a duck being transported to another universe and experiencing human life in Cleveland. In this episode we’re revisiting Howard the Duck and trying to determine if nostalgia is really a good thing. Courtney returns to help us figure this one out. She previously joined us for Terminator which is also a movie about someone being transported from another time and place to Earth. We’d love to know what the Citizens think of Howard The Duck - so be sure to send in feedback we can share on a future episode.

A sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop a hellish alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a cute struggling female rock singer who fancies him.

When you combine certain ingredients such as a dashing hero, a sultry starlet, and a dastardly villain you have the necessary components for a great tale of heroism. 14 Sep 2015004 - Goldfinger - Audio Commentary02:12:27
It's a Bond hat-trick as we take a look at the third 007 film Goldfinger. Find out if this movie holds up to its reputation as being one of, if not THE top Bond films. Sean Connery is back as Bond, along with Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore. That's right. Her name is Pussy Galore. Gert Frobe is a welcome addition as the titular villain Auric GOLDFINGER.

23 Mar 2016Reel Comic Heroes - Trailer Talk 005 - Ghostbusters00:56:49

"Reel Comic Heroes, whaddya want!?" We're back to take a look at the first trailer released for the new remake/reboot for Ghostbusters. We recorded this just a few days after the first trailer was released. Since then, there has been a fan-edited version which has gotten a lot of praise online for making more sense. And the Ghostbusters production has also released an International trailer which has also been called better. It seems the consensus online has been lukewarm as to this first trailer. Mostly people are saying the movie itself doesn't look bad, but that they released a bad trailer.

Give this a listen as Patrick, Travis and our guest, Amanda share our thoughts on the trailer for Paul Feig's new version of Ghostbusters

We'll be back in a week to talk about the Man of Steel himself in 1978s Superman.

19 Oct 2016Reel Comic Heroes 030 - Flash Gordon01:25:56

Flash! You know the rest. On this episode we took a look at the cult classic Flash Gordon from 1980. Neither of us had much previous experience with this movie and we both had different opinions at the end.

Flash Gordon is a pretty straight-forward sci-fi tale of an Earthman sent into outer space where he encounters Ming the Merciless. He is tasked with overthrowing the maniacal ruler of Mingo City and preventing the destruction of Earth.

This movie is like no other movie we’ve talked about on our list. We had a pretty good time talking about it, and we hope you enjoy the episode. Where does Flash Gordon rate for you? We’d love to know if it’s considered to be classic camp fun, or better left forgotten.

25 Nov 2015012 - Diamonds Are Forever01:54:13
Just like Sean Connery returning to the role of 007, Patrick and Travis have also returned to the world of James Bond. This episode is all about keeping track of where the diamonds have gotten to in 1971s Diamonds Are Forever

This movie was rather bittersweet for us. On one hand we're looking forward to seeing where Roger Moore will go with Bond, and on the other hand, we wish Connery would have gone out with a little more impact.

30 Nov 2016Reel Comic Heroes 033 - For Your Eyes Only01:49:12

It’s a little bit From Russia With Love and a little bit On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, it’s For Your Eyes Only. This movie has elements of a lot of James Bond blended into a sort of, greatest hits with the return of Roger Moore as Britain’s top secret agent.

Bond is sent to investigate and recover a secret British spy device before it can be claimed by the Russians. On the way he teams up with a dangerous woman with a desire for revenge.

In this episode we did discover Batman’s secret source of his Bat Shark Repellant!

114 - Timecop

Finally, we get to talk about Jean Claude Van Damme! The man is up there with action movie names like Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Lundgren. The rules of time travel are as complex and unique as snowflakes. Every movie does time travel a bit different. Timecop, has its own set of time travel rules. Do they make sense? Who can say? 02 Nov 2015009 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service01:58:51
A new Bond versus a new Blofeld. On Her Majesty's Secret Service proves that more than one man can portray James Bond. George Lazenby and Diana Rigg both provide excellent performances in a much more personal movie. OHMSS is, at its heart, a love story, with some downhill ski chases and gunshots thrown in. Blofeld, seems to be pursuing his own needs, rather than the needs of his organization, SPECTRE.

10 Feb 2021112 - The Shadow with Ashley Erin Campbell02:00:54

The Shadow

This movie is not Hudson Hawk despite what some people may think. That said, The Shadow is an odd film in many ways, but has a lot of charm. The character of Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow) precedes every character we’ve talked about so far in our list and possibly every character we will talk about in future movies on this podcast. So many comic book heroes owe in some small part to The Shadow. We’re joined by the excellent Ashley Erin Campbell to discuss this pulp adventurer played by the brooding Alec Baldwin.

Ashley Erin Campbell (@Campobella_ash) is a filmmaker, actress and writer. Check her out on IMDb to find out where you can see her and her work.

Sir Roger Moore embodied the role of British Agent 007 for 12 years in 7 Bond movies. He was the longest-serving James Bond actor.

Join us as we take a look at Moore’s last outing as James Bond in 1985s A View to a Kill.

An investigation of a horse-racing scam leads 007 to a mad industrialist who plans to create a worldwide microchip monopoly by destroying California's Silicon Valley.

16 Aug 2017Reel Comic Heroes 047 - Star Trek III: The Search for Spock with Scott Carelli02:24:43

Welcome back Citizens, to another space-faring adventure! This episode we’re defying orders and logic to seek out an old friend. We’re talking all about Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. We couldn’t do it alone, so we enlisted the help of Scott Carelli from Dueling Genre. Scott is a podcasting powerhouse. He is the host of multiple ‘Movies by Minutes’ shows and also runs a network which provides many other podcasts a place to call home. We had a lot of fun and got to know the original crew of the Enterprise quite a bit more. And we’re happy to report that the “only even numbered Trek movies are good” is a garbage statement.

20 Apr 2016Reel Comic Heroes 023 - Captain America (1979)01:39:36

Steve Rogers is a hero in every sense of the word. He fights for the little guys, because he was the little guy. Steve Rogers grew up with an inherent sense of justice and bravery. He is as noble as he is strong. Regardless of being bombarded with vita rays enhancing him with strength and speed, he will never stop defending the values he holds so dear. He is truly the Sentinel of Liberty.

This is not a movie about Steve Rogers. The man at the center of this movie may hold the title of Captain America, but little else.

If you've seen the 1979 TV movie Captain America, or its follow-up Captain America II: Death Too Soon, please email us and let us know what you thought. We'd love to share your opinions on an upcoming episode.

This was an interesting episode for us for a few reasons. 173 - Mission: Impossible - II with George Hendricks and Jonathan Howell

WARNING: This episode is very explicit.

Welcome back to Reel Comic Heroes—the podcast where we take a deep dive into the best (and sometimes worst) action-packed, comic-inspired, and downright legendary films. Today, we’re tackling a sequel that cranked up the stunts, slow motion, and doves—Mission: Impossible II.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, but this time, John Woo is in the director’s chair, bringing his signature style of over-the-top action, intense face-offs, and, of course, some gravity-defying motorcycle chases. But does this sequel live up to the impossible standard set by the first film, or does it self-destruct in a blaze of fire and techno music?

Our returning guests are George Hendricks and Jonathan Howell.

Strap in, put on your best disguises, and let’s talk Mission: Impossible II.

31 Jan 2018Reel Comic Heroes 056 - Aliens with Andy DiGenova02:38:37

The last time we saw Ellen Ripley, she was settling in for a long nap after all of her crewmates were hunted and killed by an alien xenomorph. We’re joining her as she wakes up from her sleep to discover she’s slept longer than she intended and discovers a new colony is overrun with xenomorphs. Joining us on Ripley’s trip back to LV-426 is Andy DiGenova from Holy BatCast. Let’s hope we make it through the night, which as we know, is mostly when they come out. Mostly.

57 years later, Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team during her hypersleep. The moon from the original movie has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?

We’re also getting to talk about Kurt Russell again, who previously teamed up with Carpenter on The Thing. As long as you do what Jack Burton says, you’ll get through this one just fine.

21 Jan 2016014 - Battle for the Planet of the Apes01:34:46
We've reached the end of the original Apes series. The franchise has gone crazy places since Taylor (Charlton Heston) first set foot on the shores of the Forbidden Zone. We've seen Cornelius and Zira (McDowell and Hunter) start as intellectuals and then become fugitives. We finally met Caesar - the ape who defied his masters and led a revolution.

Now, in Battle for the Planet of the Apes, we see Caesar balance two societies; his Ape brethren, and the humans who serve them.

Greetings, Citizens and Bond fans. We're back with our review of Roger Moore in 1977s The Spy Who Loved Me. We went into this one a little skeptical, as some of the recent Bond films have been so-so. We came out of it thoroughly entertained and hopeful of Bond's future. With TSWLM, it feels as if Roger Moore has become comfortable in the role and has made it his own.

We’re Back! And we’re here to bust apart Ghostbusters II. This sequel is pretty well-known for taking a dip in quality compared to the ’84 original film. Check out the episode and hear how our investigation went, then head over to the facebook group to share your thoughts.

10 Feb 2016Reel Comic Heroes 016 - The Man With The Golden Gun01:53:30

James Bond has returned! The Man With the Golden Gun felt like an old familiar suit. It felt like Roger Moore has managed to incorporate elements of Connery's performance while making the character his own. This movie, while having a lot of light-hearted moments, still found the brutality of the Bond character.

Christopher Lee as the villain Scaramanga, along with his sidekick, Nick Nack, are a welcome duo against 007. We look forward to seeing more from Roger Moore as James Bond.

Justice comes with a vengeance! This week, we’re diving into the third installment of The Crow franchise – The Crow: Salvation (2000). This direct-to-video sequel brings a new story of revenge and redemption, starring Eric Mabius as Alex Corvis, a wrongfully executed man who returns from the dead to uncover the truth behind his murder.

Join us as we discuss:

  • The differences between The Crow: Salvation and its predecessors

  • Eric Mabius’ take on the resurrected anti-hero

  • The film’s gritty, late-’90s aesthetic

  • Notable performances from Kirsten Dunst and Fred Ward

  • The film’s place in The Crow legacy

Does The Crow: Salvation live up to the spirit of the original? Or is it just another shadow in the night? Tune in as we break it all down, share our thoughts, and see how it holds up in the realm of comic book adaptations.

You know how the Batman 66 movie and television series was beloved for being silly, campy and lighthearted. Our next movie is kind of like that… but add a lot of gore, violence and a bit of nudity. This episode takes a look at 1984s The Toxic Avenger by the team at Troma Entertainment. We had a great time watching The Toxic Avenger and are actually looking forward to the next installment.
