Dueling Mixes: Dueling Mixes is for users who are comfortable with their DAW and want to go deeper into what the program can do. The site offers alternate mixes of the same song so the user can compare the two and see how different a single track can be mixed. They can also download the original track to mix the song themselves. Joe and his co-host Graham Cochrane create videos on how they mix the songs to give you insights into the process.
“Home Studio Corner” & “Simply Recording” Podcast: Joe talks about the production of one of his albums from 2010. He brings up the 80/20 rule which states 80% of your results comes from 20% of the inputs given. He talked about how he was going to write 50 songs in 12 weeks to create at least 10 that he was proud of.
Predicting The Cost of a Record: Joe talks about how to plan out how long and how much time it will cost to complete a record. This goes back to knowing how long it takes you to accomplish something in order to accurately predict how long the process will take. Joe talks about the value of salesmanship when quoting a client on how much his services will cost.

15 Jul 2022 | RSR358 - Daniel Donato - Cosmic Country on Nashville’s Broadway Strip | 02:05:52
My guest today is Daniel Donato a 25 year old guitarist and songwriter who started out at a young age of 16 playing regularly at Nashville’s iconic honky tonk Robert’s Western World while gigging with the Don Kelley Band. His debut album, A Young Man’s Country, was recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in two days and produced by guitar-ace Robben Ford, the record weaves outlaw country, Grateful Dead-style Amer-icana, and first-rate songwriting into a singular form Donato calls “21st-century cosmic country.” The message of these songs contains Donato’s “Cosmic Country” ethos, which is about finding the courage to blaze your own path. As such, it is an ethos the artist extends beyond music into the channels of social media, where he’s built up a huge following of devoted “DD Heads,” as his fans call themselves. His pod-cast, “Daniel Donato’s Lost Highway,” brings together like-minded creatives to get at the heart of what makes artists tick, for which he’s interviewed Brothers Osborne, Brent Cobb, Orville Peck, and Garry Talent of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. 20 Nov 2020 | RSR272 - Stephen Shirk - How to Record a Great Band Performance in the Studio | 02:10:07
My guest today is Stephen Shirk an engineer, producer, and owner of Shirk Studio in Chicago. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, he began playing in bands through junior high college at Miami University where he earned a degree in Business and Marketing. In 1998 he moved to New York City to chase his dream of working in a recording studio where he worked at The Hit Factory, Pink Noise and Three Tree Productions as well as assisting on sessions at many legendary NYC facilities like Avatar (Power Station), Clinton, Right Track, and Sound on Sound. Recording in New York also exposed Stephen to a unique artistic community beyond that of music. His collaboration with Nadine Robinson would ultimately land one of his sound designs in the Museum of Modern Art’s Tempo exhibit in 2002. In 2004, Stephen relocated to Chicago to continue producing and recording bands, creating sound for art installations, as well as providing audio services for the advertising community. This was the beginning of SHIRK studios. Through a chance meeting at SXSW in 2006, Stephen partnered with the music blog, HearYa.com, and began recording and filming the HearYa live sessions. The video series featured powerful live in-studio recordings of artists like Alabama Shakes, Delta Spirit, Other Lives, Patterson Hood, White Denim, Strand of Oaks, Rayland Baxter and many more. In 2013 he acquired the building that now houses SHIRK studios in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood. Firmly planted in Chicago, Stephen records, produces and hosts sessions with some of Chicago’s most celebrated artists as well as those just getting their start. I had the pleasure of spending a day at Shirk studio in 2019 when I hosted a mixing clinic there with Anthony Gravino. We spent the day listening to the beautiful Sphere console and I knew I found a new favourite studio in Chicago. Plus Stephen is the coolest. Thanks to our sponsors! He’s mixed 16 Billboard #1”s to date such as Dustin Lynch’s “Riding Roads” and notable artists as Sam Hunt, Chris Young, Rodney Atkins, Parmalee, Colt Ford, and the metal band Starset to name just a few. He also mixed George Jones’s last album before he passed. Billy Decker made history in July of 2014 when Sam Hunt became the most added new artist of all time. Decker works in a unique way. “I mix really fast. Most of my mixes are finished within an hour. To be able to do this, I use a lot of templates in pro tools. Instead of spending two hours EQing a kick drum I can do it in thirty seconds, because I have set up templates for the album that outline all the basic parameters for each instrument. I can then work on fine tuning - working on the entire mix, rather than focusing on individual adjustments. It’s a good way to work. It’s fast efficient and most importantly it’s fun." He has been on the show recently for episode RSR281 and is also now a published author for his book “Template Mixing and Mastering: The Ultimate Guide to Achieving a Professional Sound” and has created a series of mixing plugins called the Bus Glue Billy Decker Bundle over at Joey Sturgis Tones. 06 May 2022 | RSR348 - Moot Booxlé - Vintage Synth Guru & Funky Drummer in Ft Meyers FL | 02:06:38
My guest today is Matt Baxley, better known to the wider world as Moot Booxlé, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, composer, synthesist, teacher, and funk connoisseur currently based in Fort Myers, Florida. Moot rose to prominence in the early days of YouTube with his videos demonstrating his abilities on the modular synthesizer and the talkbox, gaining millions of views and many followers. He played his first professional gig at the age of 16, playing drums in a production of the musical “Grease” in his hometown of Morristown, TN. He has played thousands of gigs since then on multiple instruments. He currently plays and sings nightly in several bands in Southwest Florida, producing records, playing on studio sessions, demonstrating musical equipment both live and on the internet and writing books. I stumbled on Moots Youtube channel surfing synth videos when I was checking out the new line of Behringer synths like the Poly D, Odyssey, MS-101, Crave, and Pro-1 where he does a great job of demoing all these. Moot also live streams from his studio where you can see walls of super cool new and vintage synths played with lots of funky skill. Plus he is from TN so… come on! So, what does this have to do with making records, you might ask? Well, just as we focus on creating great records in the studio, Shawn can help us focus on how to organize our document records, streamline studio workflows, and discover new ways to stay organized in our music-making process. 26 Mar 2021 | RSR290 - Björgvin Benediktsson - “You Get What You Give” The Story of a Home Studio Engineer’s Path to Success | 02:11:30
My guest today is Bjorgvin Benediktsson an Icelandic-American author, audio educator, and entrepreneur. He is also a friend of mine and the founder of www.audio-issues.com where he has taught thousands of music producers how to make a bigger impact with their music since 2009. His latest book, You Get What You Give is a business parable a la The Go-Giver that follows Casey, an aspiring music producer stuck in a dead-end job. He dreams of becoming successful in the music industry but has no idea how to find clients. After a disastrous start (sound familiar?), he meets a mentor who teaches him the success principles he needs to make an impact and find success with his music. Björgvin is the author of seven other books in the music industry: Step By Step Mixing, Get More Gigs, and Better Mixes in Less Time. He has written over 1,000 articles on music production and his advice has been featured in publications such as MusicTech magazine, The Huffington Post, CD Baby's DIY Musician's Blog, Audiotuts, and the SAE Institute. Today we are going to talk about his new book, and dig into some of the topics surrounding the business side of running a recording studio whether it's a pro or home studio or recording and releasing your own music. We will tackle the often elusive question of marketing and promotion so that you can connect with your customers and make a great living doing what you love. Thanks to our sponsors! My guest today is Pete Johns, a singer-songwriter, recording enthusiast and music educator from Adelaide, South Australia. Pete played in bands and dabbled in recording in the 90s, before a full-time career and family put music on the back-burner. Twenty years later, Pete started getting back into writing, playing and recording music, starting out using Cakewalk and eventually Reaper to record on his PC, before discovering that he could record directly on his mobile device. Since falling in love with mobile music creation Pete has since released nine singles, an EP and in 2018 released his first full-length album "Self(ish) Aware", all recorded 100% in GarageBand on iPhone and iPad. While recording in GarageBand, Pete became frustrated with the lack of tutorials and instructional videos online that focused on mobile recording, especially using iOS, so he started his own website, blog and YouTube Channel, Studio Live Today. Pete has since created more than 400 videos focused on helping folks who want to create, record and release their own music. Thanks to our sponsors! Due to this poor vision, he smells and hears things that others don't, which can be a blessing or a curse in the confines of a recording studio. Chaz missed most of his sophomore and junior years of high school due to blindness and eye surgeries. He spent most of that period in his room with a walnut Explorer guitar, Marshall Plexi half stack, and a pile of old Electro-Harmonix pedals making sounds custom tailored to annoy his parents. Chaz currently resides in South Wales, NY, USA with his wife and studio partner Julie "JJ" Guyse where they operate Electric Owl Works, LLC which includes a residential recording studio, Rachael's Owl Music (a BMI affiliated music publishing company), and the Electric Owl Works Records indie label.
