Sooooo Andreen and Janina decided to go vacationing without moi, Realz and they even brought along their friend Jaz! The audacity!!! What's even more maddening is that they have a great time and sent me pictures of their adventures! 

Well you get to hear all about it on this episode of the podcast as they were there allegedly for a tennis event, ATP 500 Acapulco. Though it turns out that not everyone there had tennis on her mind. 

The ladies gave us all El Tea in Mexico. Should we even bother to cross the border for this event? What's there to do, see and eat? What of the Mexican waters? What's hotter, the men, the air or the sand? Of course no episode is complete without us getting into another tennis "controversy"!

In episode 7, we are onto Book 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, one of the larger books in the series. Like we suspected, this one is going to take more than 2 episodes and decided that our approach should be broken based on chronological chapter layout instead of purely themes. For this episode, we get into the details of Riddle House and its limited history. We are back at the Dursleys and their continued abuse of Harry as they deal with the unavoidable facts of Dudley's diet. We get into the magical elements at the Burrow as well as at the Quidditch World Cup. Is magic really functional in this world especially in light of the surrounding politics of this world? We get into the weeds.

In Part 4, we get into the idea of maintaining normalcy when a coup has taken place. The wedding and Aunt Muriel's spilling the tea at the event. We are being pointed to Dumbledore for information. No more do we accept Dumbledore as a wise, powerful, benign character. We need to know about his past and we have conflicting narratives between Muriel and Doge.

There is a quick escape from the wedding but safety is fleeting with options limited. How is Hermione always fixing the problems for the boys? Is she simply deus ex machina (god in the machine) though I mistakenly say ex deus machina? She is constantly solving problems that the others refuse to consider or think about. We also get into Kreacher and RAB!

In our Part 6 discussion of the Deathly Hallows, we get into the political atmosphere for the rise of fascist movements and ethnic cleansings. Is fear a contributing factor to these issues. The trio are unable to return to Grimmauld Place and so are living on the lam in the woods of Britain. How are they coping? Horcrux in hand but are they holding it or is it holding them? The tensions lead to open arguments and rash decisions. The trio becomes a duo. 

Magical solutions to their problems seem quite often to be common. Far from exceptional, are these wizards and witches really superior to muggles as they claim? We discuss these issues and more.

Several hours after taping, the tournament turned off Fox News and cancelled the tournament. Of course, it goes without saying that they heard our full discussion and acted appropriately. We are finally here at Dumbledore lesson and in true classic Black Cauldron style, we basically got through 1.5 of the lessons. Why are wizards acting so poorly about dressing in the muggle world? What of the Gaunt shack and the members that we see? The socio-economic implications of their life as well as hints of incestuous relationships. Again race/ethnicity and racial politics coming out in the wizarding world. We got into a philosophical debate of whether the love potion is no different than a date rape drug. We are very interested in hearing from you about this matter.

So we are opening the 2023 pro tennis season with our Australian Open 2023 wrap up! It was a long tournament in some respect but it is apparent that our love and interest in the sport seem to be waning.

In our 4th Episode, we conclude Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We know that this book holds all the secrets for the whole series. It foreshadows all of the major plot points of the series with a glimpse of so many symbols, people and places that will represent so much more to the overall magical theories of the world. We get into the plot of what is really happening at Hogwarts. Surely this is not the safest place in the magical world? The dangers of incompetence and Harry in the Chamber of Secrets. How is the magical world ignoring all the signs that Voldemort is not dead and trying to come back? 

I forgot to answer the question again. But here is a reminder, Arrange the potion bottles as laid out by Professor Snape in the next to last chamber where the Sorcerer/Philosopher's stone was hidden by the clues Snape gave and figured out by Hermione. It will be answered in next podcast because Janina did her homework.

We are back with another episode of the podcast to discuss the US Open 2023. If we had any good sense, we should have recorded this episode on the Saturday after the women's final. However, with foolish hope and unwise optimism we waited until after the men's final thinking Meddy could produce some magic. We got Meddy mess instead. 

For this episode we invited Howard Bryant, ESPN Sports Journalist and favourite guest on the show. We do not pay him as he has a serious job that pays his bills. 

We spent far too much time on the men's final and the state of men's tennis before we got into the ladies and Coco's run to her maiden major win!!! Was this a good US Open? Where is the tour heading? What are we doing about climate change and this outdoor sport?

We are back for another exciting episode of RTF Podcast. It seems as though the tennis world even during the midst of a global pandemic, cannot be quiet. So to make sense of all the mess and madness of the tennis world, we invited Dr. Adia Benton (@ethnography911), PhD Social Anthropology, Harvard 2009 AND A HUGE TENNIS FAN. Dr. Benton is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University, where she is affiliated with the Science in Human Culture Program. Her first book, HIV Exceptionalism: Development Through Disease in Sierra Leone, won the 2017 Rachel Carson Prize, which is awarded by the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) to the best book in the field of Science and Technology Studies with strong social or political relevance.

Her body of work addresses transnational efforts to eliminate health disparities and inequalities, and the role of ideology in global health. In addition to ongoing research on public health responses to epidemics, including the 2013-2016 West African Ebola outbreak, she has conducted research on the growing movement to fully incorporate surgical care into commonsense notions of “global health.” Her other writing has touched on the politics of anthropological knowledge in infectious disease outbreak response, racial hierarchies in humanitarianism and development, the business of professional sports, and techniques of enumeration in gender-based violence programs. She has a PhD in social anthropology from Harvard University, an MPH in international health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and an AB in Human Biology from Brown University. She has held a postdoctoral fellowship at Dartmouth College and visiting positions at Oberlin College and in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

We discussed the enigma that is Covid-19, the global and American response specifically and of course what the hell went on at the Adria Tour. It was fun and informative and a pleasure speaking with Dr. Benton.

We are back with another exciting episode of RTF Podcast and we have a guest. One of our favourite guests, Howard Bryant of ESPN came to chat. We are discussing the dynamics of the Press v the Player v the People in Charge. Did Naomi Osaka make a power move perceived as a potential power grab by tennis institutions? What is really going on behind the scenes? What is the function of tennis press is they aren't providing in depth pieces about the sport? Is tennis a dying professional sport? Can we even see tennis anymore? Who can get us the real answers to these questions and more?

We put these questions to @hbryant42 and more. Of course we discussed the tennis we watched and all the going ons of this messy French Open as per usual. Federer left Roland Garros on his own terms, like the boss Leo he is and Serena will not get 24 here in Paris. All bets hang on Wimbledon 2021! But maybe Sloane and Coco can save Paris for us all.

Let's close this frigging 2020 Australian Open championships. This 2020 hasn't been of much good so far ... We break the impact and relevance of the men's finals as Dominic Thiem continue to put in all the hard work but still no cup. Djokovic continue to dominate in Melbourne and yet he still gets no love.

Will Kenin's winning her major give her and her father the economic and social boost that they so desperately crave? How could Garbine let us down so much?

All this and more and we erase this Australian Open 2020 from our minds and spirits. Can tennis ever be consistent on the rules and regulations? That's what I really want to know.

So it is late September and it's that time again when we have the French Open .... This is so on brand for 2020 that I fully expect Wimbledon to be played come November. Nonetheless, there are singles draws for us to discuss. We attempted to give this tournament a seasonal feel but like candy corn, our efforts were an acquired taste. But the drinks were great though. 

Let's see what happens in this tournament because the whole thing seems to be so much in doubt. Can we even factor in anyone's prowess on this surface when it is all happening in September/October? Has guy forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic? So many questions not sure if we answered them all BUT we had a great time with the fanz in the comment  section!!

The WTA lost their No. 1 but gained a new one. What does this mean? Coco is a star but she is not a major winner. Rafael Nadal is on a tear like it is 2010 again. He has won his 14th French Open title and 22nd major overall. Meanwhile should Felix be wanting his money back and a new coach? We are at the beginning of the end. We start the Deathly Hallows and even though we only got through to Chapter 1, we filled up an entire episode. We get into our anticipation of this final books. What did we imagine for the hero and the other characters. Also for the very first time, Rowling provided up with epigraph/epigram, not just one but two. Aeschylus, The Libation Bearers and William Penn's More Fruits of Solitude. They strike completely different tones but they all work together for this text.

Meanwhile, Harry finds out about Snape's own secret as Trewlaney is dropping bottles and bombshells. We are in a secret Voldemort cave on the Horcrux Hunt to come to a Hogwart under attack. Harry is witness to Dumbledore's death, another serious psychological blow to the young hero. We discuss all these things in spirited manner as only we can.

Which should they seek as they imagine that Voldemort is after the former. They connect with the outside world via the wireless but their exuberance leads them to be captured finally. However, the Malfoy Manor holds both secrets and horrors for the young heroes and heroine. We get into this pivotal section of the book. Emotions run high in this episode.

We are Black with a Vengeance to open the 2021 pro tennis season, seeing as we don't count exhibition matches or events, and as this is our 7th season, we brought some special guests to chat tennis. We are just in time for the 2021 Australian Open. Past, present trust and friendships collide in the Shrieking Shack as Harry is again confront with a history that is determining his future but is hardly present for him now. And what of this traveling back to the past? In this episode we, “conclude” Book 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone/Philosopher's Stone. We  get to the People and the Plot of the opening book. We deliberate on the “Trinity”: Harry, Hermione and Ron. We begin to ask the question as to whether Hermione is the real hero of the group. How does one function in a magical world with the power of magic at your fingertip? Why does Ron have an old wand, a hand-me-down from his brother Charlie? What of the Weasleys and their status in the magical world? Bullying in the magical world? Did we all hate Professor Snape from the start? What of the ending? What stood out for us?

The answer to last episode’s trivia is given. The trivia for this episode is: In an effort to secure the Sorcerer/Philosopher’s stone, the Hogwart’s teachers set various obstacles in connecting chambers underneath the school. Professor Snape’s effort saw him placing various portions in a row with clues to decipher their order so that one can either get through to the final chamber, leave safely, be stuck in the chamber or succumb to a poisonous death, depending on the bottle one chooses. You should find the information in the book on pages 228-229 or in Chapter 16 of Book. Read through the instructions and arrange them from Left to Right. As promised here are a series of questions we hope to answer and consider through our journey of the Harry Potter Book Series.

No one asks Superman why the Holocaust happened on his watched? (Side note, the original inventors were Jewish men) yet Black Panther had to reconcile slavery and that was an overarching theme within it, Africa v the African Diaspora...Real world history becomes an issue when the fantasy world is rooted in the real world.  Therefore, 

1) Does fantasy world have to deal with real world history? 

2) How do you think fantasy world can deal with real world history? 3) Is it too complex for fantasy to deal with especially if it is children lit? 

4) Why do fantasies always replicate many of the isms of the real world? For example, men are often the stronger character. Women as secondary characters.  White characters take the lead. Characters of colour are often cast in subordinate roles. Able-ism Queer and oddities portrayals. Capitalism wins out even in fantasies. Class issues. Ageism

5) Is this marketing, propaganda or just writing what they know? 

6) Is it that fantasies are mere continuation of real world events to maintain status quo if they are saying magic has to fight epic battles for one or the few? 

7) Is this escapism? 

8) Magic as a solution for anything or something?

The end of the singles action at this year's Wimbledon has brought us out of hibernation. We couldn't let it go unrecorded that we were besides ourselves as Carlos Alcaraz took down Novaxx at Centre Court Wimbledon!!! We just had to get on a hot mic and let yall in. Sorry for those who missed the live episode but here it is. 

We got into this classic thriller of a match on the men's side and talked a lil bit of the women's final. Eubanks got a lot of love. We really need to get back to the business of making tennis podcasts. We will do better for the rest of the year.

With the death of one of the most notable wizards in magical history, competing narratives have emerged as to who really was this man. This ever present magical character turns out to be a most mysterious/private/hidden figure. 

One of the most important concept being pushed in this series is the idea of Dumbledore being the stand-in for codified ethics in the magical world. How does this play out in the series? What do you listeners think? We love to hear from you always!!.

So we are bidding fair adieu to the 2021 Australian Open which has crowned all their winners. We get into what had happened to Serena Williams. Many of our pundits were absolutely certain that she was going to win her 8th Aussie title and the allegedly elusive 24th major. Yet here we are at another big match up and some doppelganger Serena showed up. We get into all that matter. What of Naomi Osaka? Can we get onto this bandwagon? Will there be any fun here or just shade for days.

The major part of this episode, (from 1:22:00 mark) is devoted to the fate of black male tennis players on the tour? How can they function and flourish in an environment that is often times hostile to their mere presence? 

Pablo (@anBhanna) aka the Audio Assassin has returned to wrap up the Aussie Open 2021 trilogy. We have also invited a familiar voice, Howard Bryant (@hbyrant42) for his Serena take of course but also his insights of the black male player on the professional tennis circuit. This was a very thought provoking chat. Hope you all get to the end eventually :-)

In our 3rd Episode, we begin Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We come to realize that this book holds all the secrets for the whole series. It foreshadows all of the major plot points of books. This 2nd novel provides us with a glimpse of so many symbols, people and places that will represent so much more to the overall magical theories of the series. We discuss them all and discover new ones that we overlooked. As always we begin with the action at Privet Drive documenting the abuse and torture of Harry leading to a spirited discussion of Prejudice and Discrimination in the Magical/Real World. 

The trivia question (Arrange the potion bottles as laid out by Professor Snape in the next to last chamber where the Sorcerer/Philosopher's stone was hidden by the clues Snape gave and figured out by Hermione) was not answered and so no new trivia question in this episode. However, in Part II of the Chamber of Secrets podcast, we will provide the answer and a new trivia question.

We are fully invested in the political wranglings of the magical world and we are left wanting to understand how can folks be so obtuse to the obvious. We see that information, the withholding or seeking or suppressing information becomes the major theme driving this work. However, is this an attractive plot device? What about the female characterization? Hermione and her views on other female characters. What really happened to Delores Umbridge in the Forbidden Forest? All this and more in episode 11.

As you know this podcast is produced by the fact that Roger Federer is still playing top level tennis and this week he won his 103rd title in his home country. There were other winners at home on the men's side as we got into all the results that we cared about. 

Of course this is no slight to the ladies as they have two big events, the consolatory event in Zhuhai concluded and the top 8 compete for $4.1 million in Shenzhen.    We still have questions about Saudi Arabia but it seems no one else is wondering about the matter. Janina is still on official duties at her local Masters Series. So now that the Cincinnati Masters are officially over seeing as I lost interest when Venus got bounced, we have another exciting episode for you. This is the 3rd for the week all covering this event. Janina gives us her final thoughts on the event looking at the numbers and also her overall impression on the state of the event for the general public attending.

So Russia was able to steal an Olympics and an election but it proved unable to take one measly US Open men's title. So we close out this event like our men's Runner's Up, Danill Medvedev. So much to get into that I am not sure we covered it all but you can definitely let us know in the comment section below especially on YouTube.

Serena is as always the ultimate but what is going on with her in these finals. #Serenamajorsale handing out free majors to the WTA. We talk about Federer and what's going on, the fashion and the continuing sexist and racist approach to rules and regulations in tennis. Oh yeah, we started recording this live episode before the men's finals was over!
