Welcome to the Real Fit podcast with Pam Moore!

This is a podcast featuring conversations with remarkable women athletes where we get real about issues like body image, impostor syndrome, and empowerment. I’m so glad you’re here.

Do you ever struggle to take the next step in your life because you’re worried about failing or what other people will think?

Do you worry that you’re not enough—not good enough, successful enough, or thin enough?

Do you ever wonder if your self-worth hinges too strongly on your weight or your athletic performance?

I created Real Fit for women like you.

I’m your host, Pam Moore and I believe stories have the power to change lives. My goal is to share stories that will make you feel less alone and inspire you to be your best self.

I am a freelance women’s health and fitness writer, body-positive health coach, author, speaker, and occupational therapist. My writing has been published in places like The Washington Post, The Guardian, Time, Runner’s World, and Outside.

Despite—or probably because of—being picked last for every team as a kid, I’m a two-time Ironman finisher, a six-time marathoner, and a certified personal trainer.

I’m also a mom of two and like you, I'm busy and I don't have time for fluff. Welcome to Real Fit— where we will talk to real, badass women like you about the stuff that actually matters.

💖 Are you ready to heal your relationship with food, exercise, and your body? I'm  an intuitive eating coach and I’d love to help. Click here to learn more.

15 Feb 2022Ten Minute Tuesday: What if you trusted that you already had the answers?00:21:12

In honor of Valentine's Day (can we just call this Valentine's Week???) I'm sharing a solo episode where I talk about how acting on intuition instead of fear led me to Colorado, where I met my husband a couple of weeks after I got here — at a bar, on Valentine's Day.

Intuition is a theme that comes up over and over on this podcast and for good reason. It's powerful stuff. It's there and I believe it's ready to illuminate your path. Are you listening to it?

If there’s a podium placement, prize, or accolade to be had in the sport of triathlon, chances are, Jennifer Harrison has earned it.

Jennifer has been coaching triathletes for more than 20 years and is the owner of JHC Triathlon Coaching. She holds multiple coaching certifications, including USAT, Training Peaks Level 2, and RRCA. She’s worked with all kinds of triathletes including first-timers, the University of Illinois Triathlon team, National Champions, and World Championship athletes. Her clients have competed in Ironman Hawaii, gone on to Division 1 university athletic programs, and earned the Olympic para-triathlete bronze medal in Rio in 2016.  She’s worked with thousands of athletes to help them navigate their training and prepare them to meet their full potential on race day.

Over her own two-decade career as a multi sport athlete and more than 200 multisport races, she’s competed in the ITU Triathlon world championships, the Duathlon world championships, the Hawaii Ironman world championships, and the USAT Age Group Nationals Duathlon and Triathlon.

Today, in addition to continuing to race and work directly with her coaching clients, she serves as a mentor for coaches who are starting their own businesses. Jennifer is also a huge supporter of local races and gives back to the community through initiatives like her coaching business’s pay it forward program through which she helps deserving athletes in need.

Jennifer is a married mom of twins (who are now away at college). She continues to race triathlons in her free time.

15 Mar 2022Kathy Gilmour, the triathlete behind ‘Diary of a Fathlete’: “You have to do it one step at a freaking time.” | ep 3101:05:16

Kathy Gilmour is an amateur triathlete who has been competing in the Athena category (and often finishing on the podium) since 2011 and the voice behind the blog “Diary of a Fathlete.” She has paddled around Key West three times, run both a 10k and a Half Marathon (in which she accidentally ran close to 16 miles), and competed in the Havana Triathlon.

She’s been on the Base performance team since 2014 and her blog has been featured on Active.com. She has paddled all over the world, seeking adventure like numerous zip line tours, a 400-ft. gorge jump in Africa, and skydiving. If all of that isn’t bold enough, she also does stand up comedy.

29 Mar 2022Ten-Minute Tuesday: On Making Room for those Crap-tastic Feelings00:21:43
05 Apr 2022Lael Wilcox, pro ultra-endurance cyclist, non-profit founder, and women’s cycling trailblazer: “Women can win.” | ep. 3201:09:44

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were face to face with a mountain lion in the middle of the night during an ultra-endurance bike race where you were poised to beat the entire field (including the men)? In this interview, professional ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox discusses this and sooo much more.

Lael might be the toughest woman I’ve interviewed yet — and that’s saying a lot. The Alaska (and Tucson) based athlete’s many accolades include setting a women’s record in the 2015 Tour Divide, setting the fastest women’s time on the Baja Divide route in 2015, breaking the men’s record on that same course in 2017, winning the 4400 mile TransAm bike race, which has you cycling across the United States, beating everyone including the men, and becoming the 2nd woman to every complete Switzerland’s Navad 1000 bikepacking race- where she took second place.

Lael doesn’t just compete in bikepacking events - she also helps other people enjoy them. In addition to organizing women’s bikepacking challenges, she is the founder of Anchorage GRIT, a middle school bicycle mentorship program for 7th grade girls in Anchorage, AK, and she also founded Lael Rides Alaska Scholarship.

Plus, she’s a total ray of sunshine. If you need a dose of optimism you are going to find it in this interview.

In this episode, we talk about…

  • How Lael finds the motivation for things she doesn’t necessarily enjoy (ie public speaking, mapping routes and social media)
  • Why Lael has never had VO2 max testing, lactate threshold testing, or trained under the guidance of a coach
  • How she won the TransAm bikepacking race in 2017
  • Strategies for eating and sleeping during an ultraendurance race
  • What beginners need to know about bikepacking
  • How she handled a chance encounter with a mountain lion during a race
  • The joy she takes in riding her bike and experiencing nature

Coming to you this Mother's Day with something that has nothing to do with the usual themes  (ie women, sports, body image, enoughness). We'll return to our regularly scheduled program next time. For now, enjoy my reflections on motherhood this Mother's day.

In a nutshell, this sh*t is hard. If you're right here with me and you agree that you need a whole hell of a lot more than brunch, a card and some flowers to acknowledge what a mindf*ck it is to be a parent, I see you.**

**This episode includes the word "mama" zero times.

24 May 2022Leah Jantzen, Ironman triathlete, life coach, and mom of four: “Be bright, be bold and be brave.” | ep 3601:10:10

Leah Jantzen is an elite triathlete, life coach, motivational speaker, and mom of four who calls herself “The Queen of No.” A hardworking athlete who works full-time while running a coaching business and raising kids, the only way she can get it all done is by being super clear on her priorities and setting boundaries like a total boss.

Since she got started as an endurance athlete at the age of 42, she’s competed in the Boston Marathon multiple times and right now she’s gearing up to race at the IM World Championships in Kona this October.

I LOVE the name of Leah’s coaching business, the Scrappy Athlete. When it comes to maximizing performance, her philosophy is, “You have to get scrappy.” And a big part of that is using your mental game to optimize your performance. Physical fitness is important, but it’s the self-limiting beliefs that can really hold you back if you’re not aware of them. Leah was, in fact, able to smash her own belief — that she wouldn’t get faster in her 40s. As a coach, Leah uses her expert mental conditioning skills to perform at the highest level and teaches others to maximize their mindset.

Leah is a real expert on the mental aspect of training. She’s been a featured guest on TV segments for outlets and shows including NBC, CBS, Live from the Couch, Good Day Philadelphia, Insiders Health TV and Huffington Post Live. She’s also been a guest on over 50 radio shows and has hosted her own live weekly radio show.

14 Jun 2022Emma Kertesz, sub-elite distance runner, podcaster, and writer: “I can be anyone I want to be.” | ep 3701:03:19

In  this episode,  I interview two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier and author of “The Boy Behind the Door,” Emma Kertesz. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband Noah Droddy and their two elderly rescue dogs. Emma is a self-proclaimed “serious hobbyist” who trains with Boulder Underground and is coached by Evan Schwartz and Matt Hensley. When she's not running, working, or recording her podcast, you can find her taking a three-hour nap every Saturday after the long run.

In our interview, she shares how she went through the painful process of redefining her relationship with distance running — and her identity — when she stepped back from the sport.

We also discuss her book, “The Boy Behind the Door,” the role intergenerational trauma played (and still plays) in her life, her bipolar diagnosis and what helps her manage it (including lots of discussion around ketamine therapy), what the media tends to get wrong about bipolar, her creative process as a writer and podcaster, her Native American heritage, and so much more.

Real Fit is a women's fitness podcast, where you can hear deep, soulful (and funny) conversations between author, journalist, and intuitive eating coach Pam Moore and women athletes who inspire her. Find all the episodes of the Real Fit podcast here.

12 Jul 2022Maor Tiyouri, Israeli Olympic runner on resilience, confidence, and trusting yourself | ep 3900:50:56

In episode 39 of the Real Fit podcast, I interview Maor Tiyouri, an Israeli professional runner who lives and trains right here in Boulder. (Fun fact: I used to work out at the same gym as her and she’s been on my list of people I wanted to interview since before I even launched the Real Fit podcast.)

A two-time Olympic marathon runner, she represented Israel in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2020, which were held in 2021 because of COVID. A three-time Israeli national champion, Maor won the 1500m and 5000m in 2013 and the 1500m in 2015. She also held an Israeli record in the 5000m. She’s competed in three World Athletic Championships in the half marathon in 2018 and 2020 and in the marathon in 2017.

Right now, the Olympic runner is training to represent Israel once again in the marathon at the upcoming World Championships in Eugene on July 18th.

A self-proclaimed coffee snob, Maor is coached by Stephen Jones and works part-time as a PR junior account manager at Verde Brand Communications.

26 Jul 2022Ten-minute Tuesday: Joyful movement: It's not about the movement | ep 4000:18:51

In this ten-minute Tuesday I'm bringing you my reflections on my experience riding my road bike up Mt. Evans (the highest paved road in North America!) and what that has to do with joyful movement.

If you're not into riding you bike up mountains, that's totally fine and you should still listen —because joyful movement really isn't about the movement. It's about the attitude you bring to it and what you get out of it. Listen to learn more!

09 Aug 2022Rabbi Jessica Marshall: "I'm just so much happier when I'm living in my heart" | ep. 4101:00:37

On this episode, Rabbi Jessica Kessler Marshall and I discussed all the good stuff — including her love of cycling and snacks, the power of nature, the importance of ritual, and what happens when she tunes into her heart.

Jessica is a cyclist, a hiker, and a general lover of the outdoors. She’s also a rabbi with a passion for writing, creating, and helping others to inject rituals into their routines, which we are definitely going to talk about as it pertains not just to spirituality but to everyday life and sport.

As a rabbi, she moved away from a traditional role in a synagogue to forge a different kind of path that pulls from a variety of traditions and really highlights her many gifts. (Which I LOVE!!)

As a spiritual leader and coach, she guides participants into deeper connection with Spirit by moving beyond intellect or logic, to access soul-wisdom so their path lights up with ease, vitality, abundance, and JOY!

Championing spiritual inclusivity via creative rituals, intentional reflections, mindfulness practices, and the wisdom of the natural world, Jessica guides with humor, authenticity, and Divine presence.

This one is a must-listen for anyone who wants to create more joy and meaning in their life.

  • The week-long Hazon cycling trip in Israel that was her intro to road biking
  • Her passion for open faced nut butter and jelly sandwiches
  • The bike ride she was on when she knew she had to quit her job and move to a different state.
  • Leaving a dream position as a congregational rabbi to work for herself in a non-traditional role.
  • The one thing Jessica can rely on to supercharge the growth of her business
  • Setting boundaries as an entrepreneur
  • Why rituals matter and how anyone can imbue their life with more of them.

Intuitive eating isn't as simple as eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full,  There are ten principles, and in this quick solo episode, I discuss the first principle: reject the diet mentality.  This is a big one, so I'm covering it in more than one episode, starting with simply defining the diet mentality. Listen to find out what the diet mentality is (and isn't) and subscribe to make sure you don't miss future episodes where I'll dive into why the diet mentality is generally incompatible with intuitive eating and how to actually change your mindset.

18 Apr 2023Shilletha Dragonsky Curtis, queer athlete writer, and influencer of color: Facing mental health issues and racism on the Appalachian Trail | ep. 5101:00:11

When queer athlete, writer, and influencer Shilletha “Dragonsky” Curtis lost her job right when the pandemic lockdowns started, the depression and anxiety she’d been living with for years kicked in — hard. She experienced panic attacks, and ended up doing intensive outpatient treatment and when her program ended, the New Jersey native noticed everyone seemed to be talking about hiking.

As a New Jersey native, hiking wasn’t something Shilletha had done or knew much about. But she followed her curiosity, first to the trails of the Garden State, and eventually to thru-hike all 2190 miles of the Appalachian Trail. It’s a feat that most never attempt and that many never complete. And as a queer woman of color, Shilletha navigated a set of challenges that most backpackers don’t.

Today she’s on track to be the first lesbian Black woman to complete the Triple Crown of hiking and her memoir, Mountain of the Moon, is scheduled to release in 2024.

In our interview she shares her experiences with navigating mental health issues on and off the trail, how a Facebook post served as the catalyst for her entry into the world of freelance writing and later signing a book deal for her forthcoming memoir and becoming a sponsored backpacker, coping with racism on the Appalachian Trail, dealing with injuries, and so much more.

30 May 2023Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 2) | Ep. 5400:26:42

No matter what you've seen on Instagram, intuitive eating is about so much more than eating whatever you want whenever you want. It's not the hunger/fullness diet. It's not license to eat donuts all day every day or permission to never eat a vegetable again.

Intuitive eating (which is based on the eponymous book by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Eileen Resch, originally published in the 90s), is based on ten principles — the first of which is Reject the Diet Mentality.

This episode is part of a series on Intuitive Eating where I'm exploring each of the ten principles. I've already released two episodes in the series; if you haven't heard them yet, you can check them out:

Episode 44: What is Intuitive Eating?

Episode 47: Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 2)

While episode 47 focuses on what the diet mentality is, in this episode, I'm talking about why it's such an important aspect of intuitive eating, including some research that highlights the futility of dieting/intentional weight loss, the (weak) link between weight and health, and the importance of healthy behaviors (regardless of weight).

Links to research

TONS of studies on the Intuitive Eating website: https://www.intuitiveeating.org/resources/studies/

Intentional weight loss typically is not sustainable and most dieters will return to their baseline weight within 5.5 years: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17606960/

Finnish twins study: https://www.nature.com/articles/ijo2011160

Swiss researchers find weight loss can lead to net weight gain: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41366-020-0547-1#:~:text=Several%20large%2Dscale%20prospective%20studies,than%20in%20those%20with%20obesity

Study authors fail to find a consistent relationship between higher BMI and mortality: https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(21)00963-9#%20

Study finds significant segments of "normal weight" people have markers for cardiometabolic issues, while significant segments of people who are considered "overweight" or "obese" have none of these markers: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18695075/.

16 May 2023Christine Yu, author of Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes | Ep. 5300:57:03

Christine Yu is an award-winning journalist whose work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Her writing has appeared in Outside, The Washington Post, Runner’s World, and other publications. She’s a lifelong athlete and yoga teacher who loves running, surfing, and skiing. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Her new book, Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, masterfully blends narrative and science to explain what we know about female athletic performance, why women have historically been left out of the research, why it matters, and what it would take to fill to the gap.

I’ve read so many books that felt like an article or two with about 50k extra words thrown in. This was absolutely NOT one of them. The only thing better than reading the book — which covers everything from the history of the sports bra (originally slated to be called the Jock Bra- who knew!?) to how your period can affect your performance — was talking to Christine herself.

We dug into some of the book's content as well as:

  • How she scored the book deal
  • What drove Christine to write the book
  • The self-doubt, occasional procrastination, copious reporting, and meticulous research that were part of the process
  • The sticky note that got her through drafting the manuscript and edits
  • What it took for Christine to adopt a healthier approach to eating
  • Why the current state of women's sports nutrition science is in direct conflict with diet culture

I thought I knew a lot about women's sports science but it turns out I'd only scratched the surface. Christine's book is a must-read for every woman athlete out there.

Through healing from her her experiences with trauma, addiction, and an eating disorder (please consider this your trigger warning), she learned to reconnect with her true self and has since made it her mission to share the tools she used in her own healing journey to help others in her practice.

In this episode, she shares her story and how, after decades of being disconnected from herself, a practice of embodiment led her back to herself and how that has literally saved her life and her sanity over and over again. She shares what it means to be embodied, why it matters, and how you can start becoming more embodied right now.

If you know me at all you know I am passionate about intuitive eating and one of the reasons why is that every time we restrict our food or deny our appetites we are essentially training ourselves to disconnect from our true selves. But our true self is where all our power is. It’s the home of our, emotions, our authentic voice and our intuition, and we NEED to honor it in order to live a life that’s aligned with our values and to fully express our gifts.

22 Aug 2023Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 3)00:22:51

Episode #59 // Covering the first principle of Intuitive Eating: Reject the Diet Mentality, part 3- the importance of curiosity

I'm back with a solo episode on intuitive eating, discussing the first principle: Reject the Diet Mentality. (Quick backstory if you're new here: Intuitive Eating is a practice Evelyn Tribole and Eileen Resch originally presented in the 90's in the book Intuitive Eating, is now in its 4th edition.)

This is actually the third in a three-part series on the first principle of Intuitive Eating (the first two as well as an episode where I go over all the basics of IE are linked below).

Why am I devoting three entire episodes to one principle? Because this is a hard one! Rejecting the diet mentality means undoing all the brainwashing we've been exposed to since basically forever. That means unlearning all the implicit and explicit messages we've ever absorbed, from friends, family, teachers, coaches, media, ad copy, product descriptions, and healthcare providers, etc telling us that thinner is better, weight loss is healthy, and that food is attached to morality (and mortality for that matter).

Honestly, 300 episodes wouldn't be enough to cover this one topic. But in this third (and final) episode on Reject the Diet Mentality, I give you three strategies to help you undo some of that programming.

First, though, I share a story (the Great Broom Heist of 2007) for the dual purposes of (hopefully) making you laugh and demonstrating just how easily we can dupe ourselves into believing our own lies.

31 Aug 2023Figuring out who you want to be on the other side of menopause with Selene Yeager00:54:07

Episode #60 // Eating disorder recovery, thriving in menopause, navigating perimenopause,  fueling for power and performance without restriction

CW: Eating disorder

If you have questions about perimenopause, menopause, or how you can eat what you want without adhering to any rules and still perform well as an athlete, do not go anywhere, this episode was MADE for you.

Today I have Selene Yeager, the host of the Hit Play Not Pause podcast, content manager at Feisty Menopause, and best-selling professional health and fitness writer, including the co-author of ROAR and Next Level with Dr. Stacy Sims.

She lives what she writes as an NASM-certified personal trainer, Pn1 certified nutrition coach, off-road racer, and former All-American Ironman triathlete.

In this interview Selene discusses her history with an eating disorder- and consider this a content warning, she gets into some graphic detail - and how she ultimately healed her relationship with food. She also talks about the evolution of her career as an athlete, how she’s come to embrace gravel biking and bikepacking, and how both her approach to training and her outlook have changed since going through menopause.

Selene also shares some beautiful insights on how a perimenopausal mom and an adolescent daughter can not just survive but thrive while living in the same household- you’ll definitely want to listen all the way through to the end for that little gem.

About Liz Willey
I am so excited to introduce you to my first guest, Liz Willey, who is one of my favorite people of all time. She’s my sister and we talk nearly every day, sometimes multiple times per day. She’s a pediatric speech-language pathologist turned personal trainer who is passionate about giving regular people the tools to make fitness a part of their everyday life. Although Liz was athletic growing up, once she graduated high school and stopped playing team sports, for many years, fitness just wasn’t part of her life.

When she did find her way back to fitness in her 20’s her goal was simply to lose weightand the habit didn’t stick. But after having her second child, she started exercising regularly again. This time it was less about weight loss and more about wanting to just feel good.

Liz's Bio:
Liz McDonough embodies positive energy and the ability to get things done—especially hard things. Born and raised in upstate New York’s breathtaking Adirondack mountains, her surroundings cultivated her love for the outdoors from a young age.

After earning a bachelor’s in ceramic engineering and an MBA, she became certified in personal training, health coaching, TRX training, and Training for Warriors. She is the single mom of two amazing boys and loves anything the involves being outdoors; her favorite sports are biking (road and mountain), running, hiking, climbing, skiing, and snowshoeing. Liz’s passions are exercise, outdoors, adventure travel/sports with her boys, healthy cooking/baking, family, and reading.  Among her many athletic achievements are six marathon finishes (including Boston), one Ironman (Lake Placid), placing third in the 2019 Sea to Summit race, and racing road bikes as a Cat 1 cyclist.

In this interview, we went deep and had a blast. I’ve known Liz since 2006; we met through triathlon and quickly became training buddies, logging tons of miles on the bike and many yards in the pool getting ready for Ironman Lake Placid. Even though we’ve been friends for years, I got to learn more about her during our chat, it was so much fun to go really deep with her. I felt really energized after our chat and I hope you feel the same way after you listen!

20 Jul 2021Ten-Minute Tuesday: What Bell's Palsy and my nine-year-old taught me about self-love00:20:14

In 2014, ten days after my second daughter was born, I was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy; the right side of my face became paralyzed and never fully recovered. At the time all I wanted was for my face to go back to normal. Actually, for years, I was obsessed with my facial asymmetry. As we approach the fourth anniversary of the publication of an essay I wrote about the experience, I have more perspective about the experience and what it means—and I have my older daughter to thank for it.

27 Jul 2021Erica Sara, mom, runner, jewelry designer, and entrepreneur: Never give up | ep. 1201:08:00

Erica Sara is the definition of tenacity. After going through a divorce in her 20’s she left her lucrative position at Coach to pursue a degree in nutrition and started designing and creating jewelry at the kitchen table of her NYC apartment.

Today she’s the owner of Erica Sara Designs, featuring beautiful, timeless, customizable jewelry that’s graced the pages of publications including Runner’s World, Women’s Running. Glamour, and Better Homes and Gardens, just to name a few. And if you haven’t seen her work there, chances are, if you following women’s running, you’ve seen it on many of the pros, including Alysia Montaño, Colleen Quigley, among others.

In this episode she shares the twists and turns she took on her path to pursing a dream she’d been carrying since childhood; Erica discovered her passion for jewelry design at just 10 years old, using scraps of leather to craft fabulous leather pins, earrings, and hairpieces for her family and friends. (This was the 80’s!).

When she’s not creating jewelry, Erica spends her time running, cooking, and hanging with her husband Robert and their two kids.

03 Aug 2021Vicki Hunter, runner, writer, and coach: Success lives at the intersection of passion and discipline | ep. 1301:15:32

At the age of 36 Vicki Hunter wasn’t guaranteed she’d survive the injuries she’d sustained in a major car accident, let alone whether she’d ever run again. 14 weeks pregnant with her first child at the time, she’d shattered nearly all the bones on her right side, leaving her with a traumatic brain injury, a collapsed lung, a punctured liver, and no promise she’d fully recover. Now 60, not only has she fully recovered, she’s just as strong of a runner - and even stronger a person than ever .

Having qualified for the Olympic Marathon trials in 1988, she applied everything she knew about marathon training to her rehab. Today she continues to compete in all kinds of running races, from 5k’s to 50k’s, and is currently gearing up for the Boston Marathon.

Retired from teaching Political Science at the University of Colorado, she’s now focusing on coaching. A certified level II Foundation Training Instructor and a Lydiard certified running coach, Vicki is committed to helping people of all ages maximize their ability to move well.

She’s also completing a memoir; as it turns out the writing process has a lot in common with endurance sports, which we get into in this episode.

08 Sep 2021Andrea Wool, Autoimmune Strong Founder: How She Went From Powerless to Powerlifter and Built A Business Along the Way | ep 1601:01:13
Andrea Wool, the founder of Autoimmune Strong,  is a mom, a personal trainer, a nutritional therapy practitioner, an entrepreneur, and an autoimmune warrior. When Andrea started  Autoimmune Strong — the first and only exercise program designed specifically for people living with autoimmune disease — she never imagined she’d eventually hire staff and end up helping thousands of others. It started as an experiment, driven by a simple question: What can I do to feel better?

As a former distance runner living with fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s, just getting a diagnosis was a challenge. Her next hurdle? Finding the energy to play with her kids at the park. When doctors couldn’t help, Andrea took matters into her own hands. She knew there had to be a better way. With lots of research, some continuing education, and lots of trial and error, she found it.  Now she’s using what she’s learned to help as many people as possible—and she’s taken up powerlifting along the way.

01 Feb 2022Colleen Cannon, former world champion pro triathlete and Women’s Quest founder: “I ride a wave of wonder." | ep. 2601:07:31

After falling into triathlon by accident, Colleen went on to become a trailblazer in the sport, winning a world championship in 1984 and national championships in 1988 and 1990. She took first place in more than 100 races throughout her triathlon career in the 80s and 90s.

Today, she has a spot in not one, but two sports halls of fame—in Jackson County, Alabama and here in Boulder, Colorado.

Since retiring from triathlon, Colleen has poured her energy into Women’s Quest adventure retreats. She founded the organization with a clear vision—to give women outdoor experiences where they can connect with themselves, their bodies, each other, and nature—and in that process, uncover their true hearts’ desires.

Through her years as an athlete and an entrepreneur, Colleen has worked closely with international companies including Nike, Adidas, Athleta, Specialized, New Balance, Fila, Saucony, Subaru, Reebok, Smartwool, Hind, Barbara’s Bakery, Odwalla, Pioneer Electronics, and Oakley.

08 Mar 2022Lindsey Heiserman, business and life coach, personal trainer, and adventure racer: “I like to live one adventure at a time.” | ep. 3001:02:45

Lindsey Heiserman probably wears more hats than anyone you know. She’s a speaker, business and life coach, personal trainer, and accomplished adventure racer. For the last 15-plus years, her work has been a blend of movement and mindset.

She holds a unique combination of education and skills—with an undergraduate degree in exercise science and a graduate degree in counseling and psychotherapy, as well as an additional life coaching certification, she’s uniquely qualified to help her clients navigate challenges both inside and, more importantly, outside of the gym.

Although her many roles might sound unrelated, they all spring from the same place—Lindsey’s desire to help people feel better in their bodies, in their businesses, and in their lives.

A lifelong athlete, Lindsey has completed over 100 obstacle course races,  including multiple 24-hour events. And while she’s always experienced joy with movement, like many of us, her motivation originally stemmed from the desire to lose weight.

Lindsey’s clients say she’s “relentlessly positive and unabashedly real. She will challenge the way you think and inspire you to make moves in your life."

25 Jan 2022Nell Rojas: pro runner: “I’m a very strong Latina that doesn’t have to fit the mold.” | ep. 25 01:00:40

Nell Rojas is on fire right now. This month, she signed a shoe deal with Adidas and recently finished the Houston Half Marathon in 9th place (with a PR of 1:09:42).

She was born into a Boulder, Colorado running family—I think it’s fair to say her dad, Ric Rojas, is a living legend in the running world. He was one of the first athletes to run for Nike, he won the very first BolderBoulder, and held the world record for the 15K. Now, he’s Nell’s coach—and she is following in his footsteps.

Nell walked onto the running program at Northern Arizona University as a freshman, and by her senior year, she’d earned a running scholarship. After college, she became a pro triathlete and dabbled in obstacle course racing before jumping into her first marathon. She signed up to race the California International Marathon, thinking she ought to have a marathon under her belt if she was going to eventually do an Ironman triathlon, which was her plan. But after finishing 7th with a time of 2:31, she realized she had a ton of potential as a runner—and she still hasn’t gotten around to that Ironman.

Since then, Nell’s running highlights include winning the BolderBoulder Citizen’s Race (a lifelong dream of hers); winning Grandma's Marathon (in 2:28, a blistering 5:40 pace), and finishing 9th at the 2020 Olympic marathon trials on a hilly course in Atlanta.

After a bit of a break due to an injury and the pandemic, she was the first American to cross the line at the 2021 Boston Marathon this fall, where she finished in 6th place overall. And this was immediately after lying in bed for days with a fever, wondering if she’d even be well enough to get to the start line.
