28 Sep 2020Leadership is Upside Down - a Conversation with Silvia Damiano of the About my Brain Institute00:52:21
Today I bring you a conversation on leadership with a difference – the premise being that ‘Leadership is Upside Down’. My guest in conversation is Silvia Damiano – leader, author, award-winning film director and founder of the About my Brain Institute.   Silvia founded The About my Brain Institute in 2009, with the purpose of democratising leadership & neuroscience. She has a passionately held belief, that leaders in our 21st century global economy and their organisations must radically change long-held ideas of what constitutes effective leadership and this is will be the topic of our podcast today.

Our conversation begins with Silvia sharing how and why she came to live in Australia from Argentina, how she carved her leadership career in various industry sectors and how she came to realise that how we develop leaders has to change.

I discovered Silvia and her work in 2014 and immediately became a practitioner of her leadership assessment tool ‘i4’ covering the traits, competencies and attributes required for leading in a 21st Century VUCA world.

Some of the salient points of our conversation include:-

  • Lessons from leading a multicultural team at an early age
  • Ramón y Cajal – the original discoverer of neuroplasticity
  • What 2020 has taught us about the power of leadership
  • The evolution of leadership over the years
  • Why understanding of the brain is critical to leadership development
  • How the i4 Neuroleader model was born
  • The making of Silvia’s award-winning documentary ‘Make me a Leader’
  • The hidden challenges of a pandemic in professional development

Silvia can be contacted on LinkedIn and her ground-breaking books ‘Leadership is Upside Down’ and accompany workbook can be purchased here

Here is the link to Silvia’s TEDx The Rocks talk (16 minutes)

Silvia is also an accomplished poet – enjoy her poem ‘I dream of a Time…’

I dream of a time…. When people who have the power, learn to show humility When those who become obsessed with getting everything right come to understand that on occasion It is absolutely fine to get it wrong.

I dream of a time…. When the analytical learn that communicating with others, can make all the difference. And when those who are aggressive, learn to manage their impulses and be kind to others.

I dream of a time… When those who have great vision, Become comfortable with looking at the smaller details. And when those who lack patience, Realise that their impatience makes others anxious.

I dream of a time…. When those who are financially successful, Learn that helping others in need is good for the soul.

When those who yell, realise that intimidation is disengaging When those who show indecision, Learn that they are creating doubt in their followers.

And when those who are controlling, Learn that empowering others is more rewarding.

I dream of a time… When those who do not want to change, Learn that they are missing out on the mystery of the unknown, And when those who wish to be the centre of attention, Learn that they are not the priority of others.

I dream of a time…

When people realise that leaders who care, are the better leaders And when people understand that developing our own leaders is essential for a better humanity

03 Dec 2019The Heart-centred Leader - a Conversation with Ronnie Altit of Insentra00:53:05
An enlightening conversation with Ronnie Altit who shares with us his ideas, opinions and philosophy around heart-centred leadership.

As usual, I would strongly encourage you to listen to the podcast first, then the golden nuggets that Ronnie shares below will come to life and make much more sense.

  • I open the podcast by asking Ronnie how Insentra gets such high ratings on Glassdoor – both for existing and past team members
  • Ronnie talks about creating a heart-centred culture from scratch, including all the things he and his co-founders loved in past careers and excluding the opposite – he also challenges leaders to consider their real drivers for creating their desired culture
  • The famous ‘Train Story’ unfolds as a metaphor developed over 20 years that I liken to a manifesto – well worth a read with a cuppa!
  • Ronnie shares his (borrowed) strategy for starting meetings in a heart-centred way – simple yet profound
  • How psychological safety (no fear of retribution in Insentra language) can be hard to implement
  • Why some leaders struggle to bring love into business
  • Ronnie shares his philosophy on aligning intentions with impact in communication
  • I absolutely love this golden nugget – how saving in one area of the business facilitates bringing your people together (I ask Ronnie to repeat the message)
  • The essential difference between being excellent and striving for excellence
  • Key questions for other leaders in creating a heart-centred culture
  • A non-conscious authentic approach to fessing up when you stuff up! What to do when things go pear-shaped.

If you would like to follow or connect with Ronnie on LinkedIn here is his link https://www.linkedin.com/in/ronniealtit and he’s always up for a coffee!

05 Jan 2020The Inclusive Leader - a Conversation with Joanne Lockwood of Seechangehappen00:50:19
An enlightening conversation that explores how we can build truly inclusive cultures and packed with practical strategies for minimising conscious exclusion and building a workplace where people are more than included, they FEEL included.

What’s the difference between being included and FEELING included?

To what extent do you go out of your way to learn about things that are naturally very different from your norm?

My conversation with Joanne Lockwood was enlightening to say the least. From the get go Joanne is real and raw about the type of leader she was ‘in a former life’ and how her focus on inclusive leadership did a 180 degree about turn.

In this podcast explore:-

  • Why belonging is as important as inclusion
  • How a life-changing event can get you to question who you are
  • What inclusion is and isn’t and simple strategies leaders can implement to build inclusive workplace cultures
  • Understanding privilege and what we can do to build a deeper understanding in teams – ‘check your privilege’
  • How difficult it can be for small to medium businesses to understand conscious inclusion and what to do about it
  • The graffiti artist story
  •  Why an open door policy is NOT inclusive

20 Apr 2020The Influential Leader - Leading with Integrity - a Conversation with with Bill Sullivan of Salesforce00:52:17
An inspiring conversation filled with hope and gratitude where Bill 'Sully' Sullivan takes us deep into building a leadership philosophy and practice of influence that is also one of total integrity.

Bill Sullivan served as a jet and helicopter pilot with the United States Air Force for 24 years, completing four combat tours in the Middle East as a member of Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operations Command. Bill then transitioned from the military to the corporate world as a sales leader and in this podcast he provides fascinating insights into this transition and how he is using all of his leadership training and experience to be the best leader he can be to his team and his organisation.

Some golden nuggets from our conversation include:-

  • Busting the myth that command and control are military leadership styles
  • How to appeal to individual needs and create a culture and ethos around ‘team’
  • “If you truly care about your team, you’ll get the best for your boss anyway”
  • Leadership in times of crisis?
    • Build the human connection first – start with a virtual coffee
    • Get the process in place – do the right things consistently
    • Maintain perspective – “no-ones shooting at us” (Bill’s of course not always been able to say that)
  • Bill shares the story of Jim his brother – please listen because it’s his story
  • The power of story to create openness, vulnerability and psychological safety
  • Moments of gratefulness
  • Leading with integrity – when values drive decisions
  • How do you balance making each day count with keeping one eye on the light at the end of the tunnel?
  • How do I make THIS day count?
  • Reframing influence away from the connotation of manipulation to influence through building trust and integrity – unabashedly, pure unequivocal trust
  • The role of Bill’s mentors in influence
  • Trust as a matter of life and death – where you want to follow your leader into battle by creating true empathy and concern for those under your watch
  • The power of “there I was” stories in learning valuable lessons around failure “replicate things that went well and learn from missteps”
  • Leading with rawness and vulnerability
  • Leadership development – how to deliver difficult news whilst still showing that you care
  • Native American saying “Today is a good day to die” – learn why

The Man In The Glass – the Poem Bill referred to in the Podcast

When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day Just go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife Whose judgement upon you must pass The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back from the glass.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest For he’s with you, clear to the end And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years And get pats on the back as you pass But your final reward will be heartache and tears If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

08 Apr 2024The Social Factor - The Science Behind the Future of Effective People Leadership01:15:26

Today’s first episode for 2024 is a little different. I recently launched my White Paper – The Social Factor – The Science Behind the Future of Effective People Leadership and today I present it to you in audio format, as some people prefer to listen than to read.

The White paper introduces you, the listener, to the concept of Social Leadership. It opens with the big picture and the challenges faced by todays leaders, examples being the gap between what leaders believe that employees want and what they really want and need. We explore the myriad demands of today's leader and the potential cost, mentally and emotionally.

We cover the people leadership journey - 'from Crisis to Conviction' and why the focus needs to be on developing leaders both formally and informally.

The Changing Face of Leadership tracks leadership Development over the ages and what 21st Century leadership looks like today in the Social Age.

The White Paper then introduces you to the concept of Social Leadership and the social cognitive neuroscience underpinning this approach.

The SOCIAL Model of Core Needs is presented in terms of elements, scope, detail and a detailed description of each element; how the absence of these needs can create a 'threat' response, and ways we can reduce this to create 'reward' responses in our people (the concept of threat and reward and also explained).

We each have a unique 'point in time' hierarchy of needs and this is explained in the paper, together with applications of the model and a case study of how it is being used by a global engineering consultancy.

Finally we look at balancing the focus on people and performance and the consequences of focusing too much or too little on one or the other.

If you would like a copy of the white paper, please head over to https://brain-smart.com/social/ and if you would like to complete the Hierarchy of Needs self-assessment here is the link https://brain-smart.com/hierarchy-register/

Finally - we'd love to hear your feedback so please engage with in the Social Leadership Conversation on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/beingbrainsmart/

14 Jun 2021Leading the Next Generation - a Conversation with Stephanie Christopher of The Executive Connection00:30:45

A lively conversation with Stephanie Christopher CEO of The Executive Connection, an organisation I speak for.

Our conversation begins with a question I’ve never asked my previous podcast guests and takes on a journey of Stephanie’s carer and her passion for leading the next generation.

An early turning point for Stephanie came as her father suggested she would make a good PA and her mother retorted that she would make a better boss! Stephanie shares how she, like many of us, was ‘a product of the times’ – she then goes on to share how she changed that trajectory.

Here are a few of the golden nuggets gleaned from our conversation:-

  • How we are influenced by stereotypes
  • Why you can’t be a ‘one man band’ as a leader
  • What’s your lens of talent through the whole organisation?
  • The advent of ‘choose your own career pathways
  • Why you need to slow down to speed up
  • The best question to ask a person starting on their first day of a new job!
  • Acknowledge your bias when it comes to leading intergenerational teams – look in the mirror
  • Be open to not having all the answers – experience can count for much…or it can count for nothing

06 Dec 2022A Conversation with your Podcast Host Clare Edwards01:08:38

Today I bring you a conversation with a difference, it’s with me.

Over the past few months I have been approached by listeners with the odd question and so the idea emerged to answer them in a podcast.

I approached the wonderful Trent Rosen, Learning and Development manager of Canteen Australia and asked if he would interview me as he knew me a little from work we had done together pre covid but he didn’t know me too well.

It was certainly an experience and I have developed even more admiration of and empathy for my podcast guests as committing to the essence of being real, raw and authentic can also be a place of vulnerability.

No real show notes - that would be a little self-indulgent!

Books

The Values Factor The Secret to Creating an Inspired and Fulfilling Life

The 7 Secret Treasures  A Transformational Blueprint for a Well-Lived Life – released 25th October 2022

Here is a short excerpt on values from the book

“Look deeply and profoundly into your life and find out where your mind is already alert. You know you have it, so don’t lie to yourself by saying you don’t. Where is your mind most alert? Where is it creative? Where is it spontaneous? Where does it have the power to answer questions quickly? Where does it think creatively?

Don’t stop until you find that area. Acknowledge it, write it down, and don’t let anybody on the outside impose on you the belief that you don’t have it.

I don’t know about you, but I have yet to see anybody who gets up in the morning and says, “I want to be less. I want to shrink.” There’s a yearning inside all of us to expand our awareness and potential. We serve the world by shining, not shrinking, and as a result, we have a desire to expand our mind. If we don’t, we constrict our life.

Note to self, when in conversation with someone who epitomises humility in leadership, don’t expect them to talk about themselves in a hurry!

Meet Matt Cameron, Rugby League CEO of the Penrith Panthers, and my latest guest in conversation for the Rawthentic Leadership Podcast.

The Penrith Panthers are a professional rugby league team based in Western Sydney and they have been on an incredible journey over the past few years coming from behind to be in the Grand Final in 2020 and win the Grand Finals in 2021 and 2022.

24 Nov 2020Leading Virtually - a Conversation with Emma Weber of Lever Transfer of Learning00:48:23
A topical conversation jam packed with tips, tools and tales from the trenches on leading in a virtual world. Emma Weber set up her organisation to lead virtually from inception in 2002 and generously shares her wisdom on what to do and not to do to succeed leading your people virtually.

In 2002, Emma Weber founded what is now called Lever Transfer of Learning with offices in Sydney and London and a team of coaches worldwide. From the outset it was a virtual organisation.

I am a strong advocate of Emma’s work – she and her team ensure that learning is fully applied back in the workplace and businesses achieve their desired Return on Investment. But it was the aspect of leading virtually that I wanted to explore more with Emma and her generosity of spirit in sharing tips, tools and tales from the trenches went both broad and deep.

In addition to exploring leading virtually, we also talk about Coach M, Emma’s artificial intelligence coach bot and how successful it/she/he has been and is growing!

Here are a few of the golden nuggets gleaned from our conversation:-

  • Emma’s career journey from retail merchandising to consulting to coaching for learning transfer
  • Start as you mean to go on (or inadvertently fake it till you make it!) – the benefits of having an international presence
  • The core essentials of communication when leading teams virtually
    • Cadence, frequency, check-ins
    • Person before process
    • The purpose of building community
  • ‘Programming’ care
    • Measuring and tracking mood, value and learning
  • Taking psychological safety from unspoken to spoken
  • DON’T forget the metrics
    • Sharing the near misses – catching the small things we can fix
    • Win of the week
  • The conception and birth of Coach M – the artificial intelligence coach bot based on 20,000 coaching conversations
  • Don’t be afraid to stuff up
  • Lessons learned from ‘Black Lives Matter’

One of Emma’s favourite quotes from Tony Robbins:-

“Success in life is the result of good judgment. Good judgment is usually the result of experience. Experience is usually the result of bad judgment… don’t be afraid to stuff up”

29 Oct 2019The Connected Leader - a Conversation with Andy Holmes of RB00:49:25
Andy is a lenschanger, thought provoker, coach & mentor. In this insightful conversation Andy shares the origin of the term 'lenschanger' and how he has used these attributes to become a highly connected leader. I’m not transcribing our conversation word for word because the magic lies in Andy’s storytelling, observations, interpretations and the unfolding of insights

Here are some golden nuggets that will make more sense once you’ve listened and I would encourage you to read these after the podcast so that they help embed the messages and insights.

  • When I asked Andy about how the term ‘lenschanger’ came about, he shared an insightful analogy of an SLR camera and how we need to go back with our observations from the instant automatic smartphone snaps to the SLR with its intricacies of lens, frame aperture etc. He then opens up in a real, raw and authentic sharing of an opportunity he was given at a TEDActive in the US
  • Andy tells the story of his ice hockey life and career, how he survived and thrived through his ability to assess situations and change the way that the circles of influence operated
  • “attribution drives bias > bias drives exclusion > that exclusion drives influence” what an insight
  • Reverse mentoring – Andy tells how this is working at RB, the benefits and surprise unfoldings, building bridges between senior and younger/more junior employees and the desire to have development initiatives that include all levels of seniority
  • “never open email until you’ve had a conversation with someone…..we all have the power to ruin someone’s day” (and that’s not connected to the conversation!)
