12 Oct 2023Nurturing Youth Through the Journey of Self-Discovery Featuring Zoe O’Haillin-Berne00:38:05

LGBTQ+ youth face a unique set of challenges as they navigate the path toward self-discovery and authenticity. In a society that should ideally be a safe haven for diversity, they often find themselves contending with prejudice, discrimination, and a lack of understanding. The struggle to have their voices heard and their identities respected can be an arduous one. Many grow up in environments that don’t affirm their experiences, leaving them feeling isolated and misunderstood. This isolation can have profound effects on mental health and well-being.Tragically, society often falls short of providing the necessary support and acceptance for LGBTQ+ youth. Outdated norms and biases persist, making it difficult for them to express themselves openly. This lack of affirmation not only affects their self-esteem but can lead to devastating consequences. The prevalence of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth is a heartbreaking reality, highlighting the urgent need for more inclusive, affirming, and empathetic communities that celebrate and protect the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.Since its inception in 1987, Indiana Youth Group (IYG) has been at the forefront of creating safe, affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ young people. Their mission is clear: to support individuals aged 12-24 who self-identify as LGBTQ+, as well as their ally peers. What sets IYG apart is its unwavering commitment to offering all programs and services free of charge. Zoe O’Haillin-Berne, the Director of Engagement, recently shared insights on Raise Nation Radio, shedding light on the crucial work undertaken by IYG. The organization’s primary focus is to establish spaces where young LGBTQ+ individuals can build self-confidence, explore their unique identities, and form meaningful connections within the LGBTQ+ community. By creating safe havens, IYG not only fosters a sense of belonging but also amplifies the voices of LGBTQ+ youth.Zoe also highlights the harsh realities faced by many LGBTQ+ youth, with one in four individuals experiencing rejection from their families upon coming out. This often leads to precarious living situations, such as couch-surfing or, in extreme cases, homelessness. However, with Indiana Youth Group spearheading systematic change, there is a glimmer of hope and the promise of brighter prospects for these young individuals.

This episode covers:

  • Championing acceptance, equity, and restorative practices.
  • Advocating for LGBTQ+ youth in various spheres, including schools and communities.
  • Supporting, affirming communities where LGBTQ+ youth live vibrant, empowered lives.

Forging an Inclusive Fundraising Community featuring Rachel D’Souza

In the world of fundraising, community is the cornerstone, the very essence that fuels our efforts as fearless fundraisers. It embodies the connection, the shared sense of purpose, and the higher calling we all rally behind. Yet, at times, it can feel like we’re moving in circles, struggling to bridge the gap. Nonprofit development centers on connecting people to causes. Nonprofits have a range of options to achieve this, such as events, campaigns, direct mail appeals, social strategies, and board engagement. Uniting you, me, and we to foster neurodiverse acceptance and inclusion.

SHOW NOTES:

When it comes to autism awareness, there have been some positive shifts. We’ve moved beyond the puzzle piece, signaling a shift away from the notion that something is missing. The community now embraces the rainbow affinity symbol as its visual emblem, and the discussion surrounding “autistic individual” vs “individual with autism” has evolved toward more inclusive neurodiverse language. Self-advocacy has rightfully found its place at the forefront. These are important steps in the right direction. However, true transformation for the neurodiverse community in terms of acceptance, inclusion, understanding, respect, and appreciation still lags behind. Despite our awareness, society’s progress in effecting meaningful change for the neurodiverse remains disappointingly stagnant.Alyssa Lego, a young and prolific writer, thought leader, speaker, and philanthropist, embarked on her journey of advocacy at the tender age of fourteen. Co-founding a nonprofit, inspired by her younger brother’s experiences with ableism, Alyssa is a passionate advocate for change. In 2020, she introduced her memoir, marking the beginning of her literary contributions. Now, with her new children’s book series, You, Me, Neurodiversity, Alyssa aims to instill an appreciation for neurodiversity and autism through engaging stories, interactive activity books, and circle time programs. She envisions a future where societal shifts are driven by the youngest generation, equipped to wholeheartedly embrace their neurodiverse peers.Alyssa joins Raise Nation Radio for a candid conversation about the multifaceted concept of neurodiversity, the community’s call to action, our current societal stance on its acceptance, dispelling misconceptions, and exploring ways to actively support and celebrate neurodiversity.

This episode covers:

  • Advocating for those who can’t speak

  • Relatable children’s narratives
  • Unfiltered realities
  • Appreciating diverse abilities

16 Nov 2023Being a Friend to Mental Health Featuring Becky Glines and Marissa West00:46:43

Mental Health—two words that echo across every channel, from social media to print materials and conversation. While there’s a buzz around the topic, the harsh truth is that suicide stands as a leading cause of death in the United States. In 2021 alone, 48,183 lives were lost to suicide, equating to one death every 11 minutes. Shockingly, the rates of suicide continue to rise year after year, with a staggering 12.3 million adults seriously contemplating suicide in 2021. Confronted with this reality, the crucial question persists: how can we collectively forge a path forward? The solution lies on a spectrum, but two primary focal points stand out. Firstly, foster open dialogue. Engage in genuine and authentic conversations about mental health, treating it no differently than discussing a sprained ankle. The second concept is equally impactful: demonstrate kindness. Express care and deliver a simple yet powerful message — “You matter.” In essence, be a friend. The guests in this episode, including the show host, share a personal connection to suicide and the loss of family members and loved ones. Coming together, they aim to set an example for the crucial conversations that need to occur, striving to make people more at ease with the uncomfortable. Becky Glines, Communications Director, and Marissa West, Communications Foundation Coordinator, both from Friends of Mental Health, join Raise Nation Radio. They open up about their personal experiences, shed light on the impactful journey of Friends of Mental Health from its modest origins, and discuss the organization’s future in promoting health and wellness for the mind, body, and soul. 26 Jan 2023The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Raise 2022 Innovator of the Year00:42:30

In the late 1940’s, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society made its debut as a fundraising and education organization. It was founded by Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers following the passing of their son Robert “Robbie” Roesler de Villiers, who succumbed rapidly to leukemia in 1944. Robbie was 16 years young.

Originally known as the Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation, the organization had humble beginnings with just a few volunteers, tiny budget, and small Wall Street office. Their mission seemed hopeless. Most leukemia patients died within 3 months of diagnosis even with the introduction of the first generation chemotherapy drugs appearing by the mid-1950's. In its 1955 annual report the Foundation stated, ” As of this date, Leukemia is 100% fatal. This is almost a unique situation among the many diseases to which man is susceptible.”

It was a formidable and heart-wrenching start. But, Rudolph and Antoinette were trailblazers, strong-willed, passionate, and boundless in their belief that leukemia and other blood cancers were curable. Driven by a fierce purpose and passion, the Foundation grew little-by-little and eventually opened its first chapter in New York City.

Guided by the same principles of its Founders, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is unwavering in its dedication to curing leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other blood cancers. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since inception,. LLS has invested $1.6 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches. The team works tirelessly and through a collaborative model with other organizations, scientists, patients, and volunteers to find cures and ensure patients can access lifesaving treatments, just as Rudolph and Antoinette did over 70 years ago.

In this episode, Troy Dunmire, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, and Coker Powell, Chief Development Officer, talk about leadership, dedication, and the LLS legacy.

Join Troy and Coker as they take listeners on a journey through recent change, innovation, achievement, and impact as they address:

27 Jun 2024From One-Time Gifts to Lifelong Giving: Sustaining Donations with Recurring Gifts featuring Stephen King00:39:30

Nonprofits have a lot on their minds. Constant concerns about donor acquisition, retention, and lapsed donors are just the tip of the iceberg. The need to innovate, keep up with AI advancements, and explore new giving opportunities such as donor-advised funds adds to the complexity.

Staying current with the evolving fundraising landscape is time-consuming. Combine that with limited resources and the effort required to learn and implement new tools, all while running your nonprofit like a business and scraping for every dollar, and it’s truly daunting.

However, one area that can bring some relief is donor retention—particularly when you have a robust giving plan in place. That plan should focus on recurring gifts.

Meet Stephen King, Founder and CEO of GrowthForce, a firm that manages advanced accounting and CFO services for nonprofits. Stephen has a passion for helping nonprofits reach their growth potential, and a key part of that strategy is a focus on recurring gifts, which he refers to as the Nonprofit Sustainer Program.

Stephen believes that every nonprofit should offer a sustainer program to their donor base, as it is the best vehicle for donor retention. However, a sustainer program is more than just a one-line payment option on a giving form. Donors enrolled in recurring gifts need to be engaged and informed about the impact of their giving, and more importantly, about what happens without their recurring gift.

Tune in as Stephen takes you through the mechanics behind sustainer programs, why they are crucial for nonprofit organizations, the first steps to creating a sustainer program, and how to overcome common challenges when implementing recurring gifts.

In this episode:

Explore why having a sustainer program is crucial for ensuring long-term success and stability for your nonprofit.

Discover the compelling statistics behind the annual giving of donors enrolled in recurring gift programs.

Gain valuable insights on how to establish or enhance your nonprofit’s sustainer programs.

13 Apr 2023Elevate (2.0) Your Events featuring Samantha Swaim00:43:10

Event fundraising is a well-explored topic, and for good reason - the advice is always beneficial. However, in order to truly ignite a movement and garner support for your mission, it all boils down to the nitty-gritty of bringing people together and creating experiences.

SHOW NOTES:

You have a mere four hours to pull off the fundraising event of the year and raise vital funds for your mission. The sheer number of details to consider can be overwhelming. Countless hours have been spent brainstorming unique and imaginative themes, but it’s easy to get bogged down in the minutiae of the event. Will you opt for a band or DJ? And what about the dessert selection? White or ivory napkins? Let’s not forget about the critical photo opp moment. The devil is certainly in the details.More important are the fundraising options. As the mastermind behind the operation, you’re juggling committees and sub-committees, volunteers, and corporate sponsors, all with the aim of keeping each group content. While keeping a watchful eye on the silent auction, item procurement, and starting bids, you also have to strike the perfect balance for the live auction - not too many items, and not too few. The question of whether or not to hold an opportunity drawing looms large. 09 Mar 2023A Ray of Light Featuring Katelyn Brewer00:38:26

“There is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.” — Amanda Gorman. There’s one team out of Mt Pleasant, South Carolina that’s brave enough to see the light and be the light. Katelyn N. Brewer, President & Chief Executive Office, Darkness to Light, joins Raise Nation Radio to talk about how their light protects children.

SHOW NOTES:

Child sexual abuse affects more than just children and their families – it affects entire communities. It’s terrifying to hear that child sexual abuse is one of the most prevalent public health issues facing society. One in 10 children will be the victim of sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. Even more alarming is acknowledging that 90% of survivors are abused by someone they (or their family) know and trust.Darkness to Light, a nonprofit based in South Carolina with national impact, is changing the narrative on child sexual abuse through a unique lens and 360 degree approach to preventing these horrific acts of child mistreatment. The nonprofit utilizes a Social Behavior Change (SBC) framework to guide their work. SBC is a proven methodology for enabling change at the individual, community, and societal levels to improve health and overall well-being.Darkness to Light focuses on three pillars of support for the prevention of child sexual abuse.

  • Comprehensive Prevention Programming
  • Advocacy for Stakeholder Engagement and Ownership
  • Training to Improve Awareness and Skills Among Adults

Through their various programming, Darkness to Light engages adults throughout society to actively prevent child sexual abuse within their circles of influence. The nonprofit proactively targets four main audiences: Adults with Political Power and Social influence, Adults in the Community, Adults in Youth Serving Organizations, and Adults in Family. In this new prevention paradigm, programmatic reach is essential. And fundraising to support expansion, growth, and reach is critical. The intense demand created urgency for the development team to acquire and budget for best-in-class fundraising software to improve giving experiences and opportunities. Their research led to the OneCause Cares Corporate Grants Program to accelerate their fundraising initiatives. On February 7th, 2023, OneCause awarded a technology grant to Darkness to Light. In this episode, Katelyn discusses:

  • What the OneCause Grant Award means for Darkness to Light.
  • Myths about child sexual abuse.
  • 5 Steps to protecting children.
  • Why EVERYONE should have training to learn how to prevent, recognize, & react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
25 Apr 2024Volunteer Power: Activating Volunteers to Amplify Impact Featuring Geng Wang00:41:59

Revitalizing volunteer opportunity and capacity.

SHOW NOTES:

As nonprofits, we understand the importance of activating groups aligned with our organization. While it may seem straightforward since they are part of our community, engagement often eludes us, especially concerning volunteer groups. However, volunteers are a crucial affinity group to prioritize, given that volunteering is the #1 signal for affinity or the likelihood of donating. Reports also indicate that between 76% and 79% of donors volunteer at the same organizations to which they donate.Despite these clear benefits, effectively engaging volunteers can be challenging. Personalized communication is essential, but it’s also difficult to consistently engage with volunteers. Gathering and centralizing data can be challenging, and volunteers often face issues with logging hours and connecting with each other. Moreover, resources or growth opportunities for volunteers are often lacking.Given these challenges, how can nonprofits create meaningful and rewarding volunteer programs that benefit both the organization and its volunteers?Geng Wang, CEO of Civic Champs, joins Raise Nation Radio to discuss how nonprofits can enhance their volunteer programs and impact. He explains how innovations like the Civic Champs platform automate volunteer management, streamline service & event coordination, and convert volunteers into donors, making it easier for organizations to build capacity and create meaningful opportunities for volunteers.

  • Volunteering resurgence
  • Benefits of automated volunteer management
  • Consumerized volunteer experiences
  • Volunteer recruiting reimagined
  • Habitat for Humanity of Bowling Green success story

Planned giving, legacy gifts, and bequests have the potential to sustain a nonprofit and promise future funding. There’s more good news. A successful planned giving program converts donors to major gift donors, positively impacts annual giving, deepens donor relationships, drives peer-to-peer support communities, and strengthens long-term financial stability. But foreboding may prevent nonprofits from implementing a planned giving program.

According to The Fundraising Authority, almost everyone has the ability to make a planned gift and more than 33% of Americans are willing to consider a charitable bequest. Yet among those over the age of 30, only 22% say they have been asked for a planned gift.

In this episode, Tony Martignetti, Former Attorney and Creator, Planned Giving Accelerator, shares his legal expertise and 25 years of development experience to guide nonprofits towards endowment readiness. Nonprofit Research Collaborative reveals the average charitable bequest in the U.S. is about $35,000. It’s a conversation worth having.
