26 Feb 2021 | Son Of A Pitch (India vs England 3rd Test Review) | 00:57:18
We are back much, much earlier than we thought we'd be for this week's episode where we review the chaotic 3rd Test between India and England. Join an angry Dan, a surprisingly calm Zac, a composed Will and Glenn, who tees off (not aggressively) at Ed Smith's rotation policy, to try and make sense of what just happened. Unlike for the 2nd test, we initially engage heavily in some pitch discourse after the game was wrapped up inside two days. Should we solely blame the pitch for what happened? Away from pitch issues, Axar is excellent, Bairstow needs the toilet and we announce the Matt Hancock Arena. Enjoy the chaos. Paul finished second overall in The Cricket Draft’s T20 Blast fantasy game (a truly remarkable achievement) and we discuss everything that happened on Finals Day, picking up some fantastic words of wisdom for our own fantasy strategy along the way. But before that, England’s Test captain Ben Stokes shocked the cricket community by announcing he is retiring from One Day Internationals. His retirement sparked a fierce debate around ODIs, and what their place is within the contemporary cricket ecosystem. Zac and Glenn leap to the format’s defense, aiming to win over a skeptical Dan. Join Glenn and Zac for a whistle-stop tour of this week’s major cricket stories! A COVID outbreak in the India camp meant that the fifth and final Test against England was canceled, to the dismay of fans across the world. With questions abound, we attempt to answer one of the most puzzling: what on earth was India coach Ravi Shastri doing hosting an in-person book signing days before he tested positive for COVID? In other news, Yorkshire finally admitted that Azeem Rafiq was a victim of racial harassment and bullying; yet they continue to repress the full report. Why? We finish up the episode by discussing the CPL semi finals and a massive week in the County Championship. Enjoy! Join Dan and Glenn—other podcast members will return soon, we promise—as they analyse England’s record-breaking tour of the Netherlands! Sixes rained down in Amstelveen as an intimidatingly strong England team put a youthful Netherlands side to the sword. However, one tourist missed out on the fun: captain Eoin Morgan, who recorded painful consecutive ducks. Join, Dan, Glenn and Zac as they discuss England’s impressive win against Sri Lanka in Galle. Although the result was emphatic, plenty of questions remain for England. Despite helping themselves to a five-wicket haul each, Jack Leach and Dom Bess still lacked conviction during spells, while England’s opening batsmen both failed to reach double figures. Could Jonny Bairstow opening be the answer? We talk ourselves into, and out of, that terrible idea. More importantly, what on earth has Randy Caddick been doing for the last ten months? 06 Sep 2022 | Bogey For Bairstow, The Humdrum Hundred & Asia Cup Action | 00:59:26
We’re back! Although Dan remains on holiday (must be nice) and Will has a Master’s dissertation to write (boring!) Zac and Glenn are reunited to guide us through an eventful week of cricket. Rob Key had barely finished announcing that Jonny Bairstow was going to open the batting in the upcoming T20I World Cup before England’s star player suffered a serious injury while playing golf. With Jason Roy’s form flatlining, what will England’s batting line-up look like in Australia? We examine England’s WC squad announcement, alongside catching up on a thrilling Test series against South Africa. In Part Two we examine all the action in the Asia Cup, and conclude by reflecting on the recently completed second season of The Hundred. We're joined once again by our women's cricket expert Ellie to delve into the World Cup final between England and Australia - a game that was dominated by Alyssa Healy's match winning knock. Did England get the decision at the toss wrong? Or were Australia always destined to win? In part two, we're joined by a very happy Will as he revels in the fact his Rajasthan Royals are being semi-decent at cricket. He brings us his yearly 'outside shout' for IPL winners and some trademark football analogies too. 01 Feb 2022 | Extraordinary Women's Ashes Test, PSL kicks off & West Indies win the T20s! | 01:00:57
With the Women's Ashes producing one of the best Test matches we can remember, we ask whether women's tests need a fifth day, how good is Heather Knight and can England win the ODIs to finally claim an Ashes down under? On the men's side, did anyone actually learn anything from England's B+ Team trip to Barbados? Either way, it looked like a lot of fun so we round up which batters may have made a case for themselves and ask why our death bowling is so poor. Plus thank you to special guest Hammad for joining us in Part Two (34:37) to chat through a hectic start to the Pakistan Super League, how the English contingent is getting on there and why his beloved Karachi have crashed to 3 straight defeats. 13 Dec 2021 | The Ashes First Test Review: England’s 4D Chess Collapses | 00:50:46
It’s a real throwback episode today, as Rain Stopped Play’s co-founders Dan and Glenn reunite for a Moscow mule-fueled analysis of England’s dismal performance in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Well, we say dismal—Dan was feeling pretty optimistic until an hour alongside Glenn’s downbeat company reminded him of England’s many, many, problems. Indeed, it took all of one ball in this Ashes to shatter English aspirations, as the tourists’ plans were left looking more exposed than Rory Burns’ leg stump. Why did England bat first? Why was Broad left out? Why can nobody convert a 50 into a big score? Were—as Glenn half-jokingly suggests—England painfully attempting to play 4D chess? Hit play to find out! 22 Jan 2022 | 'Abolish the ECB' - Cricket's Past and Future w/ Duncan Stone | 00:46:02
For an extra RSP Deep Dive this week, we interview author and social researcher Duncan Stone. Duncan's explosive new book, Different Class: The Story of English Cricket exposes an alternative social history of the game from its earliest days to the present, and indeed the future. He shows how the use of a 'gentleman's amateur' approach was formed to the deliberate exclusion of working class participation in the game, how that thinking went on to underpin our thinking on the 'spirit of cricket' and how it still informs top-down decision-making today. Duncan pulls no punches, and launches his book at a time of scandal and crisis in the English game, where all of us are looking to the future and asking, 'what next?' We think you'll enjoy hearing from his unique and well-researched perspective. You can here more from Duncan on Twitter @StoneDunk We'd love to hear your thoughts. The United States of America isn’t the first place that comes to mind when we think of cricket, but, as we explore in this very special episode, it’s time to start paying attention to the sport’s development across the pond.
