Florilegium is a programme on Radio Maria which seeks to weave together liturgy, literature and gardening in rambling, hopefully fruitful ways. It is written and presented by Kate Banks and Antonia Shack.

About the Creators

Antonia leads a patchwork life with jobs including but not limited to mother, book designer, editor, actor and teacher. She and Kate began discussing poetry, liturgy and gardening at the Willibrord Fellowship reading group in London and are delighted to be continuing these conversations on Radio Maria.

Kate is a teacher of Literature, Philosophy and Theology, with a particularly keen regard for the poet and artist David Jones around whom many of her studies and her teaching-subjects have been based. She also briefly worked as a gardener in London, though she now lives with her little boy on the river Exe in Devon.

Dana Gioia called poetry "speech raised to the level of song." But what does this mean? Sarah shows us examples in the poems sent in after last week's prompt - simple language conveying profound and beautiful ideas. She reminds us of the call in Scripture to "Sing a New Song" and encourages us to write our own, even if we can't write melodies (some of the greatest hymns were written to existing hymn tunes!), and sends us off with a new theme and writing prompt.

On 17 February, 2021 - Helena had a special guest on the Radio Maria England Morning Show, Stefan Smart.   Stefan Smart, once a teacher, is an actor and storyteller. Years ago, he imagined taking one of the greatest stories ever told, the Gospel of Mark, and performing it as it was originally intended – live and in one sitting.  I AM MARK is the resulting solo performance. Stefan shared how he had the privilege to take it to Speakers’ Corners all over the UK, to a whole range of churches, cathedrals, conferences and schools here and abroad, as well as into prisons. I AM MARK has sold out to venues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and now it is even available on global TV station CMAX.

Helping to end abortion this Lent.

Currently in the UK there are around a quarter of a million abortions every year – what’s our response to this? March for Life UK faces this issue with truth and compassion to help bring to an end the tragedy of abortion. 

Our public witness events, training days, YouTube channel, social media presence and talks both in the UK and abroad all help to create awareness of the hurt and damage abortion causes as well as promote respect for the dignity of every human life from the moment of conception.

Fr Joseph Hamilton is the Rector of the Domus Australia in Rome, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Sydney Australia. Prior to his appointment at Domus, he served as private secretary to George Cardinal Pell, until the Cardinal’s untimely death. Fr Joseph completed his doctoral studies in Patristics at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and his license at the Patristic Institute “Augustinianum” in Rome. Prior to entering seminary he worked as an investment banker. Having left the economy of Mammon for that of Salvation, he studied at the Pontifical North American College. A native of Ireland, he is a keen but mediocre (his words) surfer, and enjoys reading and cooking.

More about Hugh Duncan:  A British/Irish Catholic, who grew up in London, obtained a degree in astronomy and became a physics teacher for four decades! A French wife and four children, living in the South of France. A lifelong love of maths and music and a passion for both Mary Magdalene and the Shroud of Turin. A desire to do something useful.

An unknown sinner washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and hair, but was it Mary Magdalene? She might have made this gesture as Jesus freed her from seven demons. Jesus explained to his followers that Mary Magdalene was like a lost pearl, who now had a special role to play. She asked Jesus how she might become a better person and he told her to talk to his mother. Mary joined the band of women that travelled around with Jesus, helping him with his mission. Mary’s sister Martha did not always appreciate Mary’s devotion to the Lord so Christ explained that the most important thing was to hear the Word. When their brother Lazarus was seriously ill, Mary’s tears brought Christ’s compassion. Mary anointed Christ again, before he was arrested, tried and sentenced to death. Mary, along with Jesus’ mother and John were at the cross and both Marys helped to prepare the Lord for the tomb. A little about Hugh’s Current Project:  The project was to write an album of songs about Mary Magdalene, record and sell them to raise money for Les Maisons Bethléem. This organization was created by Bishop Dominique Rei in 2004 in Toulon to help single mothers in difficulty. They are given a safe environment from domestic abuse, along with financial and emotional support. Rick Preston played the instruments and recorded the album, while Penny Mac McMorris did the vocals and their arrangements. This album is part of a wider project ‘Mercy Music’ where music will be sold to raise funds for charitable causes. The Web site is under construction with the hope of going live in spring 2021. About the Creators

Antonia leads a patchwork life with jobs including but not limited to mother, book designer, editor, actor and teacher. She and Kate began discussing poetry, liturgy and gardening at the Willibrord Fellowship reading group in London and are delighted to be continuing these conversations on Radio Maria. 

Kate is a teacher of Literature, Philosophy and Theology, with a particularly keen regard for the poet and artist David Jones around whom many of her studies and her teaching-subjects have been based. She also briefly worked as a gardener in London, though she now lives with her little boy on the river Exe in Devon.
