Pop culture and film have characterized sociopaths, or psychopaths, as manipulative murderers and criminals. Individuals like that surely exist, but portrayals are based upon those in the news or incarcerated criminals. But who are the people that lie and manipulate to gain power without physically harming? Harvard psychologist Martha Stout, Ph.D. published the book The Sociopath Next Door in 2006. She reveals 4% of the population meets the criteria for sociopaths. They possess no conscience, feel no guilt, or remorse. On today’s podcast we discuss sociopathy. Center for Integrated Behavioral Health - https://www.centerforibh.com/ Roger K. 27 Jan 2022 | 23. Mass producing obedience in public schools | 01:15:57
During the early 1900’s, the United States went through a period of rapid expansion establishing a free public school system. Educators believed that higher levels of education would improve citizenship and produce the managerial and professional leadership needed for modernization. The structure of education migrated towards a top-down hierarchy, with age based classrooms and a curriculum designed to meet societal needs. Critics describe this structure as a “factory model school” designed to teach obedience in preparation for a life spent working in factories. Here we are in the year 2022. The United States is primarily a service based economy with many avenues for entrepreneurial exploration. And how has the public school system adapted? By pursuing a policy of “No Child Left Behind” that established standardized exams in math and language to determine federal funding. The unintended consequence of this approach is a curriculum designed to simply take the test. Does the environment of the public school system limit individual thought, new ideas and innovation? On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the Public School System. Center for Integrated Behavioral Health - https://www.centerforibh.com/ Roger K. 11 Jul 2024 | 141. Can Postpartum Depression Be Solved with a Pill? | 01:10:49
The FDA has approved the first pill for postpartum depression, Zuranolone (Zurzuvae) on August 4th, 2023. We discuss this and more with Katie Galvin, a former speech language pathologist turned women's functional nutrition practitioner, holistic life coach, and postpartum doula, who shares her personal experience with postpartum health challenges and the flaws in the standard allopathic medical model. She discusses the lack of informed consent and alternative treatment options provided by doctors, the importance of addressing the complexity of postpartum health holistically, and the need for proper nutrition and support during the postpartum period. We examine how the drug Zuranolone became approved, the financial conflicts of interest and the potential harms to mothers that take this drug. The conversation highlights the need for a shift in the medical approach to postpartum care and the recognition of the unique physiological changes and emotional challenges women face during this time. The conversation explores the flaws in the current medical system and the need for a more holistic approach to healthcare. It discusses the pressure on doctors to maintain authority and the consequences of this mindset. The conversation also delves into the pharmaceutical industry's influence on medical practices and the lack of informed consent. The importance of addressing the root causes of health issues and empowering individuals to take control of their own well-being is emphasized. The conversation concludes with a call to resist the current system and seek alternative approaches to healthcare. 00:00 Introduction: The Approval of the First Oral Treatment for Postpartum Depression 02:26 The Flaws in the Standard Allopathic Medical Model for Postpartum Health 11:50 The Lack of Informed Consent and Alternative Treatment Options 15:01 The Importance of Nutrition and Support in Postpartum Recovery 29:01 The Need for a Shift in the Medical Approach to Postpartum Care 31:37 Flaws in the Current Medical System 43:17 The Pressure on Doctors and Lack of Informed Consent 52:19 Addressing Root Causes and Empowering Individuals 55:07 The Influence of the Pharmaceutical Industry 56:30 Resisting the Current System and Seeking Alternatives Note: This podcast episode is designed solely for informational and educational purposes, without endorsing or promoting any specific medical treatments. 17 Mar 2022 | 29. Predicting the future | 01:03:44
The world is moving fast. The global pandemic forced many industries to accelerate their digital transformation forward in order to survive. And the mental health system is no different. The need for mental health services forced clients to become comfortable with telehealth services, direct-to-consumer apps or simply into an already overwhelmed and often dubious system. A system that soon probably won’t look like the system that exists today.
On today’s podcast we look forward to the year 2030 to predict the future of the mental health system. Center for Integrated Behavioral Health - https://www.centerforibh.com/ Roger K. 29 Jun 2021 | 4. Social fear conditioning and the COVID response | 00:35:56
Fear is an emotion induced by a perceived danger or threat. It has been used throughout history as a tool in psychological warfare, as a mechanism in films for entertainment and as a motivator to train harder in athletics. How one responds to fear encompasses a wide spectrum. Mid-March 2020 is the moment the global pandemic became real in the United States. Rising COVID cases in many states led to astronomical projections and images of overwhelmed hospitals. In the face of uncertainty, tactics such as curfews, stay-at-home orders and mask mandates were pursued to slow the spread. On today's episode, Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the consequences of those actions and how fear influences our behavior. Dr. Roger McFillin / Radically Genuine Website Twitter: Roger K. 09 Dec 2021 | 18. Trigger warning! A discussion on victim mentality | 01:03:36
Where does the victimhood mindset come from? What we have learned in previous discussions is that resilience and wisdom play an important role. A difference of opinion may be an opportunity to learn. The person slowing you down in traffic, could possibly be having the worst day of her life. Everything is not an attack. We need to recalibrate. On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss victim mentality. Center for Integrated Behavioral Health - https://www.centerforibh.com/ Roger K. 01 Sep 2022 | 5. Do Antidepressants even work? (Rebroadcast) | 00:50:55
For the last two months we have had a number of insightful conversations on psychiatric medications and harm caused by the overprescription of drugs. A good way to close out those episodes is to reshare one of our very first episodes to simply answer the question, “Do antidepressants even work?” Originally published in July of 2021. ------------ When a product is launched in a particular category we expect it to satisfy an unmet consumer need or perform as intended. Shampoo, caffeinated coffee, or running shoes. If the product doesn’t work, it won’t sell. How often are we scrutinizing our use of pharmaceuticals? Instead, we rely upon the recommendations of our healthcare providers. What if those drugs don’t work? And, what if the established guidelines for standard of care are flawed. On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the efficacy of antidepressants and the subjective process used by doctors to apply the label of “depressed” on us all. If you are in a crisis or think you have an emergency, call your doctor or 911. If you're considering suicide, call 1-800-273-TALK to speak with a skilled trained counselor. 11 Aug 2022 | 48. Chemical Imbalance Revisited | 00:50:59
On July 20, 2022 a review was published in the journal of Molecular Psychiatry. This review compiled 30 years of research into serotonin and depression in full showing little evidence of any abnormality of serotonin in people with depression. The Chemical Imbalance theory of depression has been widely publicized by Doctors and the Media for decades. This serotonin theory of depression has influenced millions to take or continue antidepressant medication. IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT STOP YOUR ANTIDEPRESSANTS SUDDENLY OR TOO FAST. In this compelling podcast episode, we spoke with Kristin Reihman, MD — physician, mother, author, and Lyme disease survivor — as she candidly shares her personal journey as both a patient and doctor. Beyond merely treating symptoms, Dr. Reihman advocates for a holistic approach to health, challenging the conventional norms of the allopathic medical system. Having recovered herself from a debilitating case of Lyme over a decade ago, Dr. Reihman knows all too well what it is to live with a body that feels like it's falling apart, a brain that has forgotten how to do simple math, and the fear that you're going to die from an illness that is invisible to most people. She also knows how to make a complete recovery, and has done that for herself. Now, she is on a mission to help as many people as possible recover their own most vibrant versions of themselves, and get back to living their amazing lives. She shares her favorite tools, practices, and mindset shifts for whole-person healing and wellness in her book, on weekly episodes of her Healing Grove Podcast, and in the online communities she cultivates, including the Healing Grove Membership, on Instagram, and in her latest offering, the Life After Lyme Coaching Program.

Dr. Watson was among the first to document drug overtreatment for ADHD in the U.S. and to demonstrate that disruptive conduct can be successfully reduced through school wide behavioral interventions. In her paper, she chronicles the personal and professional attacks she experienced as a result of challenging industry interests. 07 Jul 2021 | 5. Do Antidepressants even work? | 00:50:55
When a product is launched in a particular category we expect it to satisfy an unmet consumer need or perform as intended. Shampoo, caffeinated coffee, or running shoes. If the product doesn’t work, it won’t sell. How often are we scrutinizing our use of pharmaceuticals? Instead, we rely upon the recommendations of our healthcare providers. What if those drugs don’t work? And, what if the established guidelines for standard of care are flawed? On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the efficacy of antidepressants and the subjective process used by doctors to apply the label of “depressed” on us all. 15 Aug 2024 | 146. On God, Love, Religion and Escaping the Mental Health Trap with Eric Maisel, PhD | 01:41:28
Dr. Eric Maisel discussed the profound and often contentious issues surrounding mental health, religion, psychiatry, and the nature of human consciousness. Dr. Maisel, a prolific author and critical thinker, shares his insights on the pathologization of everyday struggles, the impact of psychiatric diagnoses, and the importance of reclaiming personal meaning and resilience. Dr. Eric Maisel is a psychotherapist, coach, teacher and author of more than 50 books that include “ Rethinking Depression: How to shed mental health labels and create personal meaning” published in 2012 , “The Future of Mental Health: Deconstructing the Mental Disorder Paradigm in 2015 and his most recent book “Redesign Your Mind” published in 2021. His contributions are diverse and vast. A lifelong atheist, Maisel described in his 2009 book The Atheist's Way: Living Well Without Gods how individuals can negotiate the paradigm shift from seeking meaning (in religion, spiritual pursuits, or anywhere else) to making meaning. Eric expresses his reservations about fully embracing higher states of consciousness and discusses the complexities of love and its potential dangers. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the history and criticisms of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the medicalization of mental health. In this conversation, Dr. Roger McFillin and Dr. Eric Maisel discuss the current state of the mental health system and its impact on individuals and society. They explore the role of psychiatry in controlling and labeling individuals, the importance of embracing darkness and suffering as part of the human experience, and the need for individual and collective resistance against harmful systems. 00:00 Introduction: The Medicalization of Human Experience 04:06 Guest Introduction: Dr. Eric Maisel's Background and Interests 09:21 Early Experiences and Observations 12:18 Personal Story: Dr. Maisel's Father 14:48 Exploring the Notion of God and Meaning 17:53 Observing Human Behavior and Values 20:10 The Significance of Synchronicities 26:23The Concept of the Soul and Unexplainable Phenomena 31:07 Determining What is Right and Wrong 34:34 Reflections on Meditation and Seeking Explanations 37:00 Exploring Higher States of Consciousness and Love 44:28 Critiques of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 56:07 The Medicalization of Mental Health 01:04:35 The Role of Psychiatry in Social Control 01:08:18 Resistance Against Harmful Systems 01:18:47 The Future of Mental Health: Individual Efforts and Peaceful Activism *If you are in crisis or believe you have an emergency, please contact your doctor or dial 911. 07 Dec 2023 | 114. How lies become truth | 00:57:19
The power of repetition is undeniable. A lie, repeated often enough, can become the accepted truth. This "illusion of truth effect" applies to all areas of life, including healthcare. In the case of medications like SSRIs and SNRIs, which are commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety, the illusion of truth can have serious consequences. The illusion of truth can lead patients to underestimate risks. They may see these medications advertised as safe and effective, without fully understanding the potential downsides. This can lead them to blindly accept the doctor's recommendations without questioning or seeking further information. Don't let the illusion of truth cloud your judgment—ask questions. This is where informed consent becomes crucial. Can Antidepressants Induce Suicide, Violence & Bizarre Behavior? In this explosive episode, insiders Drs. Tim and May Hindmarsh, hosts of the BS Free MD’s podcast, blow the whistle on a medical system they claim is fundamentally broken. From the death of independent practices to the insidious influence of Big Pharma, these veteran family physicians pull no punches. They expose how insurance companies manipulate care, why your doctor's recommendations might be driven by profit rather than health, and how "preventative medicine" could be making you sicker. The Hindmarshes argue that the Affordable Care Act, far from fixing healthcare, has made it worse - and more expensive. They reveal why nutrition is ignored in medical schools and how standardized screenings could be harming patients. But it's not all doom and gloom - our guests offer radical solutions to fix the system, challenging listeners to take control of their own health. Whether you're a patient, a healthcare provider, or just someone who cares about the future of medicine, this episode is a wake-up call you can't afford to miss. 21 Jan 2022 | 22. Are we in a Mass Formation Psychosis? | 01:26:20
Throughout history there are examples of communities, regions and even entire countries acting irrationally towards a perceived adversary. And sometimes that “adversary” is not a physical presence, but simply an idea, or the threat of an occurrence. Examples such as the Salem Witch Trials, the Dancing Mania, and Nazi Germany often leave us asking the question, “How did this happen?” The phenomenon of Mass Formation Psychosis has been applied as a possible explanation. In September 2021, a professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium suggested Mass Formation as a possible explanation for the global response around the Covid pandemic. At the start of January 2022, Dr. Robert Malone shared this topic on the Joe Rogan Podcast, effectively becoming the most memorable part of their 3 hour conversation. Thus the need for more education on this psychological phenomenon. On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss Mass Formation Psychosis. Receiving information or research that contradicts your beliefs can be discomforting. 16 Nov 2023 | 111. The Medicalization of the Human Condition w/ Brett Deacon, PhD | 01:37:53
The biomedical model views mental disorders as brain diseases and emphasizes pharmacological treatments to address presumed biological abnormalities. This biologically focused approach has dominated the American healthcare system for decades, leading to an increase in psychiatric medication use and a perception of mental disorders as brain diseases caused by chemical imbalances. Brett Deacon serves as an Associate Professor and Program Convener for Clinical Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His academic journey includes obtaining a PhD in clinical psychology from Northern Illinois University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Over the past 15 years, he has contributed to academia and dedicated five years to full-time private practice. With expertise in two key areas, Brett is recognized for his proficiency in exposure therapy for anxiety. Notably, he co-authored the book "Exposure Therapy for Anxiety: Principles and Practice" (2nd edition), published by Guilford Press in 2019. His second area of focus revolves around critiquing psychiatry's biomedical model of "mental illness." His research encompasses the efficacy of antidepressants, publication bias in antidepressant trials, the impact of perceiving depressive experiences through a biomedical lens, and the validity and societal implications of the biomedical model. 27 Jun 2024 | 140. When Psychotherapy Creates Harm | 01:59:24
In this episode, Dr. Roger McFillin and Dr. Brett Deacon examine the state of the mental health field and the potential harms of certain therapeutic practices. The conversation skillfully weaves insights from the film "Good Will Hunting" to explore multifaceted themes, including the limitations of the biomedical model in addressing human experiences, the nuanced role of boundaries and self-disclosure in relationships, and the broader cultural tendency to pathologize emotional expressions. They discuss the need for ethical, evidence-based care amid the field's splintered nature and our need to reframe happiness as living a meaningful life aligned with one's values, rather than just managing thoughts and feelings.
