07 Jul 2023EP#45: Recovery From Burnout and Spotting 'Pre-Burnout' Signs00:18:55

Recovery From Burnout and Spotting 'Pre-Burnout' Signs: My Experience

In this episode, I delve into the important topic of burnout and discuss strategies for recovery and prevention. Drawing 100% from personal experience, I explore the signs of burnout and how it can affect musicians.

Burnout is a state of complete exhaustion, both mentally and physically. It can lead to a loss of interest in activities that were once meaningful and create a sense of hopelessness. I share with you my  "pre-burnout" signs, which can be SO misleading, as they may initially seem positive and useful.

Musicians, in particular, face specific challenges that contribute to burnout. I chat about our unique circumstances but -- by understanding the signs and taking proactive steps, musicians can prevent and recover from burnout, it's possible!

Join us in this episode as I unravel the complexities of burnout, provide insights into spotting "pre-burnout" signs, and share all my experiences as I work through recovery.

Together, we can support one another in overcoming burnout so we can continue to nurture our creativity and be happy musicians!

13 Jul 2023EP#47: The Transformative Power Of Commitment00:16:56

Are you constantly considering plan B, living with one foot out the back door?

In this episode, I am jumping into the transformative power of commitment.

I explore the importance of fully embracing plan A when it comes to your music and I  share a personal experience of moving to a new country and realising that true commitment requires a shift in mindset.

It's all about aligning our spirits with our dreams, trusting in ourselves, and taking committed action manifest our desired reality. By committing to our creative journey, we can show up in both body and spirit, fully immersing ourselves in the process.

This episode serves as an invitation to recommit to our music, and to ourselves.

I hope you enjoy ♥️

20 Jul 2023EP#47: Embracing The Discomfort Of Taking Action00:21:10

Hey there, songwriters!

On this episode, we're diving into the power of feeling secure while taking action on your musical journey. Sometimes, those strong reactions in your body might leave you wondering if it's a "no" or a "yes"...

Let's get real with three truths about taking action: Embrace discomfort because that's how you grow and learn, and it helps you decide if you're on the right path. Get out of your head and into the real world, where the magic truly happens. Don't mistake thinking and planning for action; they won't move you forward.

Jump in now and listen to as I explore the incredible possibilities that await once you take action. We've got two inspiring stories to help you take a leap, embrace the unknown, and let your musical gift shine. Remember, your next step could lead you straight to feeling fulfilled and connected as a songwriter!

27 Jul 2023EP#48 Rediscovering the Joy of Music and Songwriting Through Community00:21:22

Rediscovering the Joy of Music and Songwriting Through Community

In this episode, I share my personal journey of seeking financial support to really go for it with my music dreams, only to realise that what I truly needed was to reconnect with the joy of making music.

I took a break, lost touch with my creativity, but then I had a brilliant idea – running a songwriting retreat. I organised my first retreat in 2019, and it turned out to be a transformative experience, reigniting my passion for songwriting and music!

Now, I run a business helping others find joy in their music and songwriting journeys.. listen in for how YOU can get involved.

https://www.beradicalmakemusic.com/retreat

Highlights:

  • My initial belief that money was the key to pursuing my music dreams.
  • Receiving a grant from the Scottish government for my album, but feeling panicked and anxious instead of happy.
  • Realizing that what I truly needed was to reconnect with the joy of making music and songwriting.
  • Taking a break and losing touch with my creativity
  • The transformative experience of the songwriting retreat – writing more music in one weekend than in the previous two and a half years, making new friends, and finding joy in music again!
  • My decision to continue hosting songwriting retreats and helping others rediscover their passion for music.
  • The upcoming online songwriting retreat on August 12th and 13th, focusing on fun, connection, and rekindling the joy of music.

01 Aug 2023EP#49: Don't Fight The Pain Of Change00:20:36

Welcome to the latest podcast episode!

This year I want to feel better, energised, in control of my life, and truly alive.

Inspired by James Clear's words, "Every Action You Take Is A Vote For The Person You Wish To Become," I'm determined to vote every day for the person I aspire to be.

Join me in this transformative journey, as I explore the significance of clear intentions and the power of self-trust in songwriting. Together, we'll navigate discomfort and embrace change, all while discovering the authentic and content songwriter within us.

When you decide to take your songwriting seriously and change your actions accordingly, you might feel resistance at first. Expect this and don't let it trick you into believing you shouldn't be doing it.

TRUTH: It's not always going to feel good, or easy, but through this discomfort you are growing.

And on the other side lives a peaceful and contented songwriter. One that can express their authentic-self in ways that you may not even be aware of right now.

It's place where songwriting feels completely normal to do.

But it involves going though the pain of change.

It's so worth it.

And who knows what version of yourself you might find at the end of the month?

15 Sep 2023Vulnerability Hangover [Authentic Songwriting & Anxiety]00:29:48

A Vulnerability Hangover is the feeling of anxiety and dread you have after sharing one of your songs with others.

Recognise this?

Wow - I do!

I recently signed up for Courageous Voice, a six-week program about showing up online authentically and speaking honestly to the people who matter to you (i.e. YOU! 🥰)

But showing up as myself online, being authentic and real means that I will not be everyone's cup of tea ☕️

And that scares me.

I signed up because over the past year, I have been feeling more and more generic. Less like myself. Trapped in a cycle of fear.

But all of that is slowly changing (hence this email) and I'm so happy I'm going through the program. It's allowing me to rediscover who I am, what I'm all about, and what I stand for.

This is why I set up Authentic Songwriting.

I know how many of us are struck by fear and self-judgment when we sit down to write our songs, and it's just an icky and painful experience.

And it's not super easy to ‘just be yourself’ ignore all those feeling and and 'do it anyway' (bad advice).

So, I created a 5-day workshop space for us all to practice writing our songs and be more authentic, together.

I truly believe that genuine, caring community is one of the most powerful ways to feel safe, feel seen and heard, and feel more capable of writing and sharing your songs, your art, your truth.

wherever you are at right now with your songwriting, take a deep breath, you are doing absolutely fine. You are exactly where you need to be.

And if writing your songs has been triggering your anxiety a little recently, let's see if we can help each other inside Authentic Songwriting.

Have an amazing weekend ♥️

Loads of love. Rosie x

Making music is not dangerous.

Avoid being drawn into the illusion of lack. You may feel you don't have enough—whether it's confidence, knowledge, skill set, money, gear, time, or equipment. But the voice inside you, echoing these doubts, is simply trying to keep you safe. It perceives your music-making as risky, often because you haven't ventured far into it.

My album reflects my journey.

I am scared; I feel it in my body. However, I've faced this fear many times before, countering every doubt with my experience. I see it for what it truly is—an inner creative force, an artist within me, a part that dances with joy. Simultaneously, there's an internal parent telling me to be quiet, to stop talking, to be less ME, to grow up, and to pursue a "real" job.

NO THANK YOU.

Here is what I tell myself:

1. Start from where you currently stand, with the resources you possess. You can achieve more than you imagine with what you have. Can you play an instrument or use your voice? Can you sing? Learn, grow, and take control of your life—because you have all you need.

2. Seek guidance. You're listening to me, someone who has positioned themselves as a guide, mentor, support, and authority figure. Authentic Songwriting begins this Friday, and I invite you to join. My course commences in October, and you're welcome to be a part of it. Alternatively, seek a mentor, ask a friend, or find a community (I even offer a free one).

3. Take a chance on yourself. The return on investment for creative risks is boundless; you can never accrue creative debt or a creative deficit. The more you create, the more you comprehend the intricacies of it all. Read books on the subject, start an Instagram account dedicated solely to your songwriting, and follow inspiring accounts. Begin a YouTube channel and start sharing your thoughts.

You are the most secure investment you'll ever make, and once you realise that, everything will change.

Remember, your art is not dangerous. Fear is a normal companion on the journey to exploring new realms and landscapes of creativity.

If you want to go deeper, join me in Authentic Songwriting, doors are closing soon:  https://beradicalmakemusic.com/workshop

03 Oct 2023EP#52 Music is NOT a luxury00:19:48

✨ Join Radical Songwriting Academy: https://www.beradicalmakemusic.com/ac...

Time to ease into a gentle rhythm dear songwriter...

Just wrapped up an immersive 5-day journey of authentic songwriting, and let me tell you, it was a whirlwind.

I found myself holding space for fellow songwriters, showering them with support and encouragement – something I now see as my 'mission'. There's an electric buzz in the air, fuelled by TONS of breakthroughs and transformative mindset shifts.

But it's undeniably intense.

You know, this intensity can be exhilarating, like the heat of summer, but just as autumn gracefully arrives, we all need a moment to slow down.

That's why I also curate 8 weeks of Radical Songwriting inside the Academy. It's a more unhurried pace that allows for reflection, deeper understanding, profound shifts, and meaningful change. I'm bursting with pride for this program.

I'm thrilled to extend an invitation to you to explore this program further and ask me anything you'd like.

One topic that surfaced during our workshop was the notion of vanity.

Many of us grapple with the idea that our music and art may seem self-indulgent, a luxury we're not entitled to. But let me be clear – it's not a luxury; it's a fundamental right to express yourself through your music.

If this thought is holding you back, I implore you to delve deeper into it. Embrace your creative journey, and let's break down those barriers together. 🎶

13 Oct 2023EP#53: 2 Top Tips on How To Finish Your Songs00:13:35

I recently asked my community "Why is it important to YOU to finish your songs?"

Here are some of their responses...

✨ To feel a sense of achievement

✨ Because it's my personal goal to share them and I can't do that if they aren't finished

✨ To understand what thoughts and emotions need to be released. And then understand how I can help others while helping myself.

✨ To see a possibility of performing them live.

✨ Because not finishing them keeps me small

✨ I owe it to myself and the song!! I have a few unfinished songs that almost make me feel anxious/guilty!!

✨ To get over my fear of releasing my own music

✨ To face the imperfections of finished songs and stop piling up ideas.

✨ To connect with people and not feel alone.

Such powerful and compelling reasons.

And even though we have these reasons and motivation I still get a question around the subject of finishing songs multiple times a week from my students and members of my community. I even ran a poll inside our Facebook Group and over 40% of songwriters agreed that they needed help finishing their songs.

The truth is, finishing songs is hard.

So, I ran a workshop! You even may have seen some of the emails last week.

The workshop was SO popular and went down SO well that I decided to record a podcast all about the subject.

Inside this week's episode I offer two powerful tips to help you get your songs over the finish line.

Many songwriters say that it's only once they manage to complete work, and complete work often, that they feel legitimate. That they see results. That they find opportunities come knocking.

And that's my story too.

Once I started taking my music a little more seriously and implementing these two super basic but totally necessary steps, wow, my musical world exploded! 💥

And the truth is, until you complete your songs, you will be stuck in limbo.

So head over and have a listen to this week's podcast and let me know what you think. Will you try out these tips? Are you already doing them?

26 Oct 2023EP#54: The Rebellious Act Of Music Making00:25:59

Do you consider yourself a rebel?  Someone who shakes things up?  Who challenges the status quo?

Or maybe you are like me, a recovering people pleaser (hands up!).

Either way, if you are making music then I want to be very clear…

You are participating in a rebellious act.

Making music is a statement that says:
I'm putting myself first.
I'm breaking free from conformity.
I'm standing up for what I believe in.

It's a soft, gentle rebellion, and it's something to be utterly celebrated.

It's not about whether your music is explicitly rebellious or provocative in its content, although that’s a dead give away if it is.

No, it's about you, the artist, making a choice to express yourself against all the narratives insistent on talking you down.

That's the heart of rebellion in music, and I'm all for it.

I also want to invite you to join me for a brand new, two-hour live workshop on November 8th, 2023, called "Music Rebellion: 3 Powerful Pathways to Radical Creative Freedom

During this workshop, we'll gather and commune as a community to explore what it means for each of us to be rebellious in our music making.

I will take you through my three-pronged plan that allows myself, and my students, to find and grab hold of true, authentic, creative freedom so we can make the music *we* want to make.

We'll discover how to stand up for our unique artistic visions, understand our core values as creators, and how to continue on a journey of true self-expression.

This is about finding your voice and leaving a lasting mark on the world.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to join us.

But either way, dive into the podcast episode today, and please, share with me how you're embracing your rebellious spirit as a music maker.

I can't wait to connect with you.

I will be back next week with another episode and email…

Until then, stay radical!

15 Nov 2023EP #56: How To Practise Gentle Accountability00:29:30

I have decided I am breaking up with ‘Holding Myself Accountable’.

I've discovered the magic of Practicing Gentle Accountability instead, and it's a game-changer.

Instead, picture this: a supportive coach, a structured framework, and a holistic approach to your creative needs.

Say goodbye to the old school, patriarchal gun-to-the-head productivity is king mentality and hello to a nurturing environment that fosters true creative growth and well being.

In the episode I dive into what it can look like to Practice Gentle Accountability:

Protect Your Mental Health

Navigating the pressures and stressors that the music industry can bring is difficult for all of us.  It’s important to alleviate any unnecessary burden we are placing upon ourselves whilst still being the ambitious musicians we want to be.

Build Confidence

As you see progress and feel yourself developing, your self-identity will shift and your confidence will grow

Find Clarity

There is no one-size-fits-all with your music career, this can be equally as stressful as it is liberating, with most people feeling overwhelmed - finding clarity can come from practicing Gentle Accountability and taking action that feels good, not intense.

We can get sucked into the 'finish the year strong' narrative a little too easy.

When most of us just want to REST at the end of the year.

07 Dec 2023EP#58: Build Your Music Career in 30 Minutes A Day00:20:12

Here's the scene I've witnessed time and time again:

  • It’s finally time to take your music seriously and ‘get back into it’
  • So you dive headfirst into a new project or challenge
  • But after a few weeks, life sweeps you up, and you're drowning in commitments yet again
  • You tell yourself, "I just need to get this other stuff done, THEN I'll focus on my music."
  • But you’re completely drained, stressed and tired
  • Result? More disappointment and the familiar nagging feeling returns that your dreams may never *actually* happen

Recognise this cycle?

Yeah, I have been there too!

That’s exactly where my student was.

But we turned things around (and it’s easier than you may think!)

By cracking open the diary we got our music game plan rolling, and by the end of the call, a revelation struck: "There's not a single day where I don't have 30 minutes."

BOOM.

That's the magic right there.

You can kickstart your music career with just 30 minutes a day (or every other day), and that’s enough to feel a real boost in self-trust, clarity, and opportunities.

So, if you want to know exactly how this can look, tune in to the full episode for my strategic tips on putting this into action.

Don't let the business of life get in the way of your music.

You've got this!

Rosie

P.S. Working on your music this weekend?  Still time to grab a discounted £47 ticket for my upcoming 2-Day Online Winter Music Retreat Create & Connect [usually £97!] where we will be putting ALL of the above into action.

In this video, we explore the practicalities for songwriters to grow their fanbase both online and offline. This question was submitted by one of our awesome community members Ruaraidh Wishart (https://littleleaguerebellion.bandcamp.com/)

06 Sep 2024EP#71: Being yourself might annoy people (but that's a GOOD thing!)00:18:20

Watch the video of this episode >>

There is no hiding from the fact that when you write songs from a place of honesty and authenticity some people will not like it.

They won't like the music.

They won't like your point of view.

They won't like the fact that you are audacious enough to do whatever the f*** you want.

You making YOUR music p*sses some people off.

How do I know this?

Because I received an explicit email directly from one of those people.

It completely broke me.

I mean I literally STOPPED writing songs as a result.

📖 All the details are here in this little "story time" video I made >>

Of course, I am here today with a beautiful back-catalogue of incredible music in my wake that I am proud of and can completely stand behind 💪

But the scar is still there.

And although I agree that opinions are important and should be shared there is a huge caveat to my POV - that those opinions contribute to our world as a whole with a positive end-result in mind.

So someone telling me "I don't like your music" just doesn't fly with me anymore, sorry.

Opinion DENIED. 🙅🏽‍♀️

It's useless information.

So, what I want you to take from this email and the video is...

  • Know who you are and strive to write your music from a place of complete authenticity.
  • Share your music, please.
  • Prepare for opinions, everyone's got one.
  • Deal with those opinions from a centred place of integrity and value.

We go over ALL of this stuff (and so much more!) inside the Authentic Songwriting: 3 Day LIVE Workshop - register your space here.

Keep doing you.

You got this! Rosie 😎
