Through the story of VIVA, an erotic magazine for women created by Bob Guccione (founder of the men’s magazine Penthouse), we are getting a history lesson today on FEMINISM! First wave, second wave, third wave, fourth wave? What does it all mean and where are we now?

A little background: While VIVA was created by one of the most prominent figures in adult entertainment, it was staffed by female writers and editors and featured groundbreaking full-frontal male nudes, writing by feminist icons like Betty Friedan and profiles of literary legends like Maya Angelou. But what is originally conceived as a high-end, progressive, sexual utopia for women… doesn't quite turn out that way.

Jennifer Romolini is an award-winning writer, editor, and author of "Weird in a World That's Not: A Career Guide for Misfits" and the upcoming memoir, “Ambition Monster” (Atria Books, 2024). A longtime media executive, Romolini is the host of Crooked Media’s latest series “STIFFED”, which tells the true story of VIVA, one the first erotic magazines for women, and co-host of the “Everything is Fine” podcast with former Lucky Magazine editor-in-chief, Kim France. Ginger wrote openly about her mental health struggles in her first memoir ‘Natural Disaster’ revealing that after getting her dream job at ABC she checked herself into a mental health hospital. But Ginger says ‘Natural Disaster’ barely scratched the surface.  In her follow up memoir - ‘A Little Closer to Home’ Ginger is digging even deeper and telling us all about finding ‘the calm after the storm.’ We discuss:

  • Why landing her dream job at Good Morning America pushed her to check into a mental health hospital.
  • With all of the mental health struggles catalyzed by the pandemic- where does the mental health conversation need to go? How technology can help!

30 Dec 2021Gratitude Meditation: Peace + Fulfillment in the New Year with Jessie De Low (P.S. THANK YOU)00:17:43
Two days before 2022— the new year. How can we celebrate + reflect?  And it came to me. I just want to say thank you.

When I started the podcast I always thought about using the initials of PRETTYSMART, P.S. because each episode feels like a love letter. Today is my love letter to you.

I think some years are questions, and some years  are answers. We’ve asked a lot of brilliant people questions this year and one of the big takeaways I’ve had is that while it is really important to be a seeker, the ANSWER always lies within you. Everything you need is inside of YOU. This podcast, our guests, this platform, and most of all, your messages have made me realize that. And so I want to thank you for giving me so much.

My wish for you this year is that you find both fulfillment and peace. In whatever relationship is causing you stress, in a work environment that feels frustrating, or even in your self work.

Fulfillment and peace are both fluid I think. They are never going to be things we can grab onto all of the time, but they are good north stars. So whichever kind of year this is for you- whether it’s one of questions or one of answers, know that wherever you are right now is where you are meant to be.

As a thank you to you today’s pod is a gratitude meditation to take us into the new year. Feel free to download it onto your phone to replay throughout the year.  And you know this wouldn’t be PRETTYSMART if I didn’t hit you with some facts. So we know now that gratitude literally changes our brain— It increases feelings of security and connectedness. It helps squeeze out negative feelings, and keeps the good ones aroundd longer…positive emotions tend to be like Teflon – they slide off us way too quickly. Gratitude lets us hang on to the positive for longer, and celebrate the good in our lives that we might otherwise move on too quickly from. It’s shown to help reduce anxiety and depression. And most of all it FEELS GOOD.

And we are so today lucky because none other than Jessie De Low recorded our gratitude meditaiton. She is really amazing at what she does…people all over the world try to book sessions with Jessie and we have our own special session with her today. If you aren’t familiar with Jessie’s work yet, I am going to briefly introduce her. Jessie DeLow is a Certified Yoga Instructor, Art Therapist, Manifestation Coach, and Co-Founder of How You Glow,. Jessie provides life-enhancing, enriching, and enlightening experiences to clients across the globe. Her sessions blend her background in therapeutic healing with spirituality, positive psychology and neuroscience. Her goal? To inspire people to live the most vibrant life possible and step into alignment with their soul’s true calling.

And with that— Thank you.
