Dive into the depths of history with our podcast episode, "Halloween The History and Evolution of a Ritual. Believed to have originated 2000 years ago in Ireland and Scotland, this very popular American holiday is rooted in peculiar and dark history. Known as Samhain, a Ancient Harvest Festival celebrated on Oct. 31st by the Celtic people, probably paved the way for most of the ways in which 21st century party goers celebrate Halloween across the world (especially North America) today. Listen as your hosts of Put Em On The Couch go on a fast and fun historical exploration. Discover the spine-tingling rituals that surrounded Samhain, where the line between the living and the dead blurred. Uncover how early Celts donned disguises to protect themselves from malevolent fairies rather than the ghosts, ghouls, and witches we associate with Halloween today. Journey through time as we unveil the Catholic Church's role in weaving these ancient customs into the fabric of All Hallows Day and All Souls Day, eventually shaping the Halloween we celebrate. Explore the transition of Halloween from its mischievous early days to the modern, culturally rich marvel it has become. This episode will leave you with a newfound appreciation for a holiday that transcends centuries, making it the bewitching celebration we know and love.

So tune in as we interrogate the fault lines of American democracy, exploring the tension between populism and constitutionalism, and daring to ask the question: Is the Constitution itself the greatest threat to our democracy?

Robert J. Brennan (Bob) has passed. Friend, colleague, mentor and all around bad ass has sadly passed away. In this episode, Nelson and I will celebrate this incredible teacher, friend, scholar and fellow podcaster in the best way we know how - by putting Bob's Legacy on the Couch!

Nelson provides a historical and political analysis, questioning the very nature of democracy and highlighting potential pitfalls, especially for nations adopting the American model. As the conversation unfolds, he passionately defends the value of taxation, drawing inspiration from an inscription he encountered as a middle school student in Washington, D.C. Later in the episode, the tables turn as Nelson prompts Jason to share his psychological perspective on politics and government. Jason, drawing on the insights of sociobiologist E.O. Wilson, explores concepts such as group polarization, echo chambers, and the impact of tribalism on political affiliations. American Democracy is not just a podcast episode; it's a journey through the heart of American governance, a blend of history, political science, and psychology that leaves listeners with a deeper understanding of the complexities shaping our democratic system. Tune in for a captivating exploration that transcends the ordinary and challenges perceptions about the foundations of democracy.
17 May 2024 | Freud on the Syllabus: A conversation with Dr. David Livingstone Smith | 00:49:30
In this 53rd episode of Put Em On The Couch, I have the honor and privilege of sitting down with a living philosophical legend. Dr. David Livingstone Smith is a professor, interdisciplinary philosopher, author, thinker and most importantly, a new friend of the show. Dr. Livingston Smith's most recent book, Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization, ” was a finalist for the 2023 Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize for Interdisciplinary Philosophy and was awarded the 2023 Joseph B. Gittler Award from the APA. Before that, his 2012 book, Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave and Exterminate Others,” won the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf award for nonfiction. David was generous enough to join me on the couch today to discuss one of his oldest and most foundational influences - Sigmund Freud. During this conversation, I will ask about a variety of things related to the life and legacy of this most perplexing man of science. For instance, was Freud enmeshed with his mother? How did Freud die? Why didn't he stick with medicine? Did he really believe psychotherapy was the answer to all psychological ills, and so, so much more. Join me as I talk with Dr. David Livingston Smith about a man who's ideas and writings shaped and continue to impact his own writings and thinking.
