08 Feb 2022S2E3 - Flipping the Script w/ Joyce Kline00:09:28

You know the saying “two is company and three’s a crowd”?

Joyce Kline sure does and it’s one of the reasons she felt inspired to bring her film to life.

No stranger to the Victoria film scene, she's moonlighted in many roles including visual artist, writer, playwright, teacher and production designer. Now as a Production Designer and familiar voice behind this very podcast, we flip the script.

In her candid recap for S2E3 of Push In, we hear from Joyce as she details her experience flipping the script as Director. Set amongst a 1920's hotel room backdrop, Joyce shares how she tapped into her work as a Production Designer to handcraft the set.

Drawing upon childhood experiences that stick with you - especially if they’re out of the fringe, Joyce recounts her experience visiting a carnival as a child, the inspiration for her film, Vaudeville came alive.

Filming over 3 days, Joyce took advantage of COVID-19 closing all of the typical filming locations, connecting with the Langham Court Theatre to bring her set idea to life.

Joyce admits that she enjoyed her role as an authority figure and we, for one, can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve.

Find out for yourself on the latest episode of Push In, The CineVic Podcast with our Podcast Director turned Guest Host, Paul Ruta.

Atmospheric rivers, mudslides, and washed-out roads frame the latest episode of Push In, The CineVic Podcast.

Host Joyce Kline invites filmmaker and photography manager for the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Arnold Lim to share how he and his team made it through a shoot day against all odds.

What do you do when your route to set just got washed away by a mudslide and your lead actors can’t make it to set?

After shooting until the last beams of daylight, now it’s time to find the way back home.

But with the roads blocked, where are the cast and crew going to stay the night?

26 Apr 2022S2E6 - Justifying Life w/ Trent Peek00:09:47

On this episode, host Joyce Kline catches up with director, writer, actor, past CineVic president and overall man-about-set, Trent Peek.

Trent recalls going from “not ready at all” to being chosen to direct Sarah Nicole Faucher’s CineSpark winning production, Going Home.

This film tells the story of a young deaf woman trying to work in the film industry. Being not many of these things, Trent shares the reality of directing an independent short from a different perspective than his own.

Not shy to try different departments, Trent recently found himself doing set dec on the Netflix series Maid, filmed throughout Greater Victoria. Let’s just say he has a new appreciation for what goes into production design.

This episode also touches on a near death experience that reframed Trent’s outlook on career and life.

Lastly, Joyce finds out the meaning behind Trent’s philosophy of, “keep it real, and if it’s not real, don’t keep it.”

Be sure to check out Trent’s film, Going Home in-person(!) at CineVic’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival on May 6, 2022 at The Vic Theatre in downtown Victoria (or streaming online May 8-31).

29 Apr 2022S2E7 - Love, Language and Soup w/Alayna Y00:09:59

A young woman falls in love with a waitress in a greasy-yet-nostalgic Hong Kong-style cafe, but a language gap divides the two - or is there something more?

Animator and filmmaker Alayna Y goes back to her roots through food with the appetizing short animated film, Macaroni Soup.

An artist specializing in making soup - she throws people, experiences, and inspirations into a simmering pot. Whether it’s well-received or not, she’ll always make the soup she wants.

Join host Joyce Kline as she discovers the key ingredients that make Alayna's soup just right. Joyce gets the scoop on feedback that Alayna decided it was up to her to ignore and pave her own path.

For this ambitious project, Alayna pulled together a team of friends and collaborators from her cohort at Emily Carr University – even a composer friend from the internet.

Be sure to see Alayna's film, Macaroni Soup, in person at the opening night of CineVic’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival on May 1, 2022 (or streaming online May 8-31). Kick off the festival with a program of animations, anthropomorphized cats, and empowering dance.

03 May 2022S2E8 - Heart and Soul of a Story w/ Ann Marie Hak00:09:55

When Graham takes his new step-son Emil on a camping trip, he hopes they will finally bond through the traditions and lessons he learned from his own father. However, the scars of the recent death of Emil’s father hang heavy over the pair and Emil resists Graham’s attempts to get closer to him…

Reads the logline of Ann Marie Hak’s 2020 CineSpark competition winning pitch for her script Wishing Fall.

Drawing from her own childhood growing up in Northern British Columbia, host Joyce Kline unpacks what it was like for Ann Marie to share her experiences in narrative form for the screen.

Raised in the Wet’suwet’en Territory (Houston, BC) by a Czechoslovakian father and a Filipina mother, Ann Marie explores her ethnicity and what it means to be a first-generation Canadian through her writing.

But just how did Ann Marie pitch the heart and soul of a story she hoped to tell as a newbie filmmaker?

This episode touches on casting during a pandemic, how to win a film pitch event and still stay true to your roots.

Be sure to watch the WORLD PREMIERE of Wishing Fall directed by James Weicker in-person at CineVic’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival on Friday May 6th, 2022 in beautiful downtown Victoria, BC.

05 May 2022S2E9 - Creators of the World w/ Nicholas Riini00:09:57

What do Evil Dead, King Kong, Power of the Dog and the CineVic Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival have in common?

Allow us to introduce Maori filmmaker Nicholas Riini (Ngai Tuhoe) of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Connecting with the elemental world of his ancestors, Nicholas’ film A Morning With Aroha combines  creativity and imagination for a show not to be missed.

How did Nicholas put his 20+ years of experience in technical departments (gaffer/lighting/rigging) for top films to use? Leading the production for this independent short and hiring an almost entirely local, indigenous film crew made creating A Morning With Aroha even more rewarding.

How do you deal with bullies at school when they don’t understand you as a person?

What’s the real-world story behind the theme of Nick’s latest film?

And how do you shoot a film when your young lead actor has bored of you by the time the camera rolls?

Tune in with host Joyce Kline to find out this and more on the latest episode of Push In, The CineVic Podcast.

And be sure to watch the Nicholas’ film A Morning With Aroha in-person at CineVic’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival on Saturday May 7th, 2022 in beautiful downtown Victoria, BC.

Fun fact:
One of our show’s producers recently discovered that the locally crafted Spinnakers Black Cherry Sparkling water served at The Vic Theatre along with a fresh bag of popcorn tastes just like Cherry Blasters candy. Just one more nostalgic reason to join in on the fun of the festival in-person.

04 Oct 2022S2E13 - The Undertow Took Me w/ Krista Loughton00:09:57

Host Joyce Kline catches documentary filmmaker Krista Loughton in the midst of Krista’s campaign for city councillor in the upcoming Victoria BC municipal election.

Krista describes a harrowing incident in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown East Side that inspired her 20 year career fighting homelessness and addiction through filmmaking.

Krista is widely known for the empathic documentary Us and Them (co-created with collaborator Jennifer Abbott) which followed the lives of four chronically homeless Victoria residents over an entire decade.

The film premiered on CHEK TV and has been shown more than 70 times across Canada—including an exclusive parliamentary screening for Canada’s Members of Parliament. It includes cameos by famed  addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Maté, Indigenous leader Chief Phil Lane Jr, and “Reverend Al” Tysick, former director of Our Place community support society.

Though Krista initially thought Us and Them would be limited to her subjects’ day to day struggles, the film turned unexpectedly personal when Dr. Maté challenged her to examine her own personal pain.

Listen in as Krista shares with host Joyce Kline how Dr. Maté helped her, what’s surprised her about running for political office, and why she creates films specifically to influence politicians.

·Joyce surprises Octavian with something she’s found online.

·Octavian breaks down when it's the sound and when it's the visuals that will scare the bejesus out of an audience.

06 Dec 2022S2E16 - Electric Feel w/ Grady Lawlor00:09:54

On today's episode, host Joyce Kline interviews filmmaker, podcast producer, animator and CineVic’s own Vice President, Grady Lawlor.

We all know filmmaking can be a pricey hobby. So why pay to put together a production when you can get the cast to bring you onboard?

Grady turned his love of filmmaking into a life of adventure and heart with wedding films. And if you watch closely enough, even a little bit of magic.

Through Evergreen & Bound Films, Grady and his partner Breanna capture what a day feels like. Representing this in an honest, compelling and thoughtful way.

On the show we cover camera gear, sound equipment and the basics of how to film a wedding that actually brings you back to exactly how it felt.

Joyce digs into Grady’s very own lost wedding ring story via a Tofino surf trip, torrential rain and a first time metal detector.

Fun fact – over 2 days Grady estimates talking to no less than 1000 strangers (aka new friends) while searching for his own treasure. All of them wondering what this smiley guy was looking for.

20 Dec 2022S2E18 - Anecdote or story? w/ Claire Mulligan00:10:00

“You should make a movie about that!” Whether you’ve just regaled someone with a juicy anecdote, or they’ve buttonholed you at a party with one of theirs, if you’re a filmmaker you’ve undoubtedly heard this.

Before you’re tempted to act on that impulse, you’d be well advised to listen to novelist and screenwriter Claire Mulligan explain the difference between a story and “something that just happens.”

Claire ought to know—her novels have been nominated for the prestigious Giller Prize, Canadian Author’s Award and Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, her first short screenplay The Still Life of Annika Myers has won multiple awards, and her latest short screenplay Obscura is currently in pre-preproduction thanks to a $30,000 Directors’ Guild of Canada Greenlight Award.

There’s lots packed into this episode, including what’s wrong with most short films, what a good short screenplay needs to contain—and what a camera obscura is.

02 Feb 2023S3E2 - Dear Mr. Dudley w/ Morgan Rhys Tams00:10:00

When BC documentary filmmaker Morgan Rhys Tams was 31 years old, he wrote a short letter to the absentee father he’d never known. This led to his decision to drive 5000 kilometers to the opposite coast of Canada so the two could meet for the first time.

Dear Mr. Dudley: Morgan’s unconventional latest short film, chronicles this real-life road trip that crossed not only a continent and decades of lost time, but the distance between father and son.

Morgan Rhys Tams has created everything from a music video-style rock & roll “western” opera, to site specific and interactive installations and community-based interventions—often in some of the world’s most challenging locations.

He has received grants from the Canada Council, BC Arts Council and the National Film Board and has taught in partnership with The National Film Board, the City of Victoria, the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee and prestigious Hot Docs Film Festival.

Dear Mr. Dudley  will be featured in Cinevic’s upcoming Members’ Screening in this year’s Victoria Film Festival on February 5th and 12th, 2023!

Curious about the brave new world of interactive documentaries?  Experimental filmmaker Morgan Rhys Tams’ “elevated cinema” goes where few have gone before.

From a community-based animation with 120 collaborators, to an animated site-specific installation of strategically placed QR codes on aluminum plates, Morgan’s oeuvre stretches the limits of what a documentary can be.

Morgan has created everything from a music video-style rock & roll “western” opera to site specific and interactive installations and community-based interventions—often in some of the world’s most challenging locations.

19 May 2023S3E8 - When Your Autobiographical Film Exposes Your Family w/ Jamie Lam00:10:00

Revealing what your family’s really like behind the scenes can be a giant leap of faith that few have the courage—and family support—to take.

In her sensitive short The Mess We’re In, emerging Vancouver writer/director JAMIE LAM draws upon personal experience growing up in the loving home—of a hoarder!

While the film never sugar coats the stress this caused Jamie growing up, it’s a triumph of love over tidying up. It was a hit in this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival and won Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Film at the 2022 Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon.

If you’ve ever considered making your family the subject of a film, this revealing interview might just give you the push you need to take the plunge.

25 May 2023S3E9 - Time Honoured Tools for a Modern Message w/ James Hunter00:10:00

Every screenplay has at least one element that a filmmaker knows is going to be tricky to carry off. But when the script demands you track down an elusive rare bird and find a location where an actor can safely fell a giant tree with a hand axe, you’re going to have to get extra creative. How director James Hunter, with the help of producer Faith Gouga, managed to pull all this off in their haunting short film NEST—is a fascinating tale all on its own.

James is an award-winning Australian writer, director, editor and producer whose 16mm black and white “gothic psychodrama” NEST is one of the outstanding films in the 2023 Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival.  The film is currently making the festival rounds and has screened in such prestigious Academy Award Qualifying festivals as Melbourne, St. Kilda, Atlanta, HollyShorts, FlickerFest, and SITGES film festivals.

02 Jun 2023S3E10 - Perfect Pitch w/ 2022 Cinespark Winner Daniel Kwon00:10:00

What’s it like to pitch to a panel of judges in front of a live theatre audience— when you think you’re awful at pitching? That was the challenge for multi-talented filmmaker Daniel Kwon, the writer, director, editor and co-producer of 2022’s Cinespark winning film The Girl in the Forest.

Daniel is a true renaissance man: filmmaker, screenwriter, director, editor, colorist, set decorator, videographer, graphic designer, motion graphic design, storyboard artist and animator. Fresh from his film’s premiere in 2023’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival, Daniel had lots to share with host Joyce Kline, including:

·      How he managed to successfully pitch The Girl in the Forest in spite of being “terrified.”
·      Shooting shorter days on a limited budget.
·      His desire to make a film that unites cultures.

14 Jun 2023S3E11- Pools of Blood & Shallow Graves w/ Sonya Chwyl & Anik Desmarais-Spencer00:10:00

In this fun episode, Joyce meets up with writing/directing team Sonya Chwyl and Anik Desmarais-Spencer. Their latest short horror comedy Slip poses a sadly relatable question for these inflationary times: “How far will you go to keep your shitty rental?”

Slip just won Audience Choice at this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Film Festival and you can watch it on the big screen for free in Regina, Ottawa and St. John’s as part of Short Circuit’s 2023 National Tour.  Anik and Sonya’s last film Baby Teeth won Outstanding BC Film in  Short Circuit’s 2020 festival and both films have screened in festivals US and Canada wide.

Listen up as this dynamic duo not only “dissects” the glory—and the gory—of using fake blood on screen, they also share:

·      What they learned from previous films.

·      Why, for them, co-directing is like "being in a solid, committed relationship.”

·      What they did to get a corpse’s POV shot for Baby Teeth.

19 Dec 2023S3E18 - When A Good Story Comes Along w/ David Malysheff00:10:00

Last episode, we heard from one of the most requested camera operators in Canada, award-winning, daredevil cinematographer DAVID MALYSHEFF.  David is known for delivering the goods under extreme conditions - filming from horseback, helicopters, and even Zodiacs crashing their way through rapids.

This episode, David fills us in on his quieter, but no less moving, personal passion project - creating a 90-minute documentary on the late Jewish composer Peter Gary and Gary’s epic holocaust oratorio A 20th Century Passion. Listen in as David explains how holocaust survivor Gary worked to “Stamp Out Hate” through both music and lectures to 60,00 youngsters, what drew him to his story, and how the current situation in Israel and Gaza have affected crowdfunding to complete the film.

With more than 25 years of television production experience in film and broadcast video, David Malysheff has been behind the camera on numerous Canadian TV shows including The Nature of Things, The Fifth Estate, The Amazing Race, Moosemeat & Marmalade, Canada’s Next Top Model and the moving documentary Us and Them, which he also co-produced.

15 Mar 2024S4E3 - Mind Control & Synchronicity w/ Emanuel Foucault00:10:00

The brutal “treatments” that the Canadian government and CIA jointly funded at the height of the Cold War era’s brainwashing paranoia are the stuff of nightmares. Patients with diagnoses as innocent as postpartum depression were rendered virtual zombies for life, creating a legacy of intergenerational trauma and perpetrator guilt that inspired filmmaker Emanuel Foucault’s riveting short film Washer. In this episode Emanuel describes:

·      The devastating mind control experiments conducted at Montreal’s notorious Allen Memorial Institute.
·      Adapting history for a short film.
·      Finding amazing actors.
·      Crowd-funding three times more money than he asked for.
·      His plans for a tree planting horror story!

EMANUEL FOUCAULT is an actor, writer, editor and producer for both stage and screen dividing his time between Montreal and Victoria.

01 May 2024S4E6 - Tender Masculinity - w/ Andrés Felipe Ángel00:10:00

With all the talk about toxic masculinity, it’s a real treat to watch a film that explores traditionally held “masculine” qualities like aggression, competitiveness — even homophobia — while also acknowledging masculinity’s potential for tenderness, nurturance, and protectiveness. Working with amateur actors from the Bogotá barrio, filmmaker Andrés Felipe Ángel manages to pull that off and more in his sensitive autobiographical coming of age film Rage. It’s a real treat to hear Andrés share how he developed the film from a single visual image, why he’s a self-styled “cultural manager,” trends in Columbian filmmaking, being in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards, and finding the perfect litter of puppies he needed for Rage.

Andrés is an audiovisual producer and live performer in the Bogotá drag scene. His films include Rage Fieras in Spanish — and Bogotá Se Quema. Rage screened at the Moscow International Film Festival and the Bogotá Short Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Short Film and is in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards. Now it will screen in this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival.

30 May 2024S4E7 - Why Producing Isn’t Fun w/ Ana de Lara (pt. 3)00:10:00

You may say you’ll never do it but, if you’re an indie filmmaker, chances are at some point you’re probably going to wind up producing your own work. In this fun and frank episode, actor, writer, director, and producer Ana de Lara really tells it like it is: Why ultra low budget films are so tough to produce, how she ended up producing in the first place, and why producing  isn’t fun! An accomplished actor, Ana also shares what it’s like to be flown to Prague for a Cascade commercial, and being cast as everything from Chinese to Indigenous...when you’re a Filipina-Canadian.

Ana de Lara has 17 awards and 5 nominations for her award-winning short films and the two features she’s produced: All In Madonna and Open for Submissions. A Women in the Director’s Chair alumna, she won Telefilm’s New Voices Award, Talent to Watch, Whistler Film Festival MPPIA Award, Vancouver Women in Film Matrix and Best Narrative Short awards, Broad Humor Film Festival’s Best Director, and Asians on Film Best Comedy and Best Screenplay Awards.

26 Sep 2024S4E12 Do What Nobody Else Can Do – w/ Leslie Bland00:10:00

What does it take to produce three feature documentaries, a feature comedy, and have two more in the works? Producer Leslie Bland shares the “special sauce” that’s made his production companies Orca Cove Media and Less Bland Productions so successful. There’s plenty to learn as he tells host Joyce Kline why filmmaking pulled him away from a successful career in live professional theatre, how he made cross-cultural connections through his collaboration with Cowichan filmmaker Harold Joe, and how, in a competitive world, sticking with original IP can lead to success.

LESLIE BLAND’s film and TV work has been featured on Bell Media, Discovery Networks, Amazon, Super Channel, Knowledge Network, FNX, Télé Quebec, Hollywood Suite, APTN, and streamers and broadcasters in New Zealand, France, China, Australia and around the world. His award-winning, feature length documentary Gone South: How Canada Invented Hollywood featured interviews with celebrities Howie Mandel, Neve Campbell, David Foster, David Shore, Shannon Tweed and the late Alex Trebek.
