08 Feb 2022 | S2E3 - Flipping the Script w/ Joyce Kline | 00:09:28
You know the saying “two is company and three’s a crowd”? Joyce Kline sure does and it’s one of the reasons she felt inspired to bring her film to life. No stranger to the Victoria film scene, she's moonlighted in many roles including visual artist, writer, playwright, teacher and production designer. Now as a Production Designer and familiar voice behind this very podcast, we flip the script. In her candid recap for S2E3 of Push In, we hear from Joyce as she details her experience flipping the script as Director. Set amongst a 1920's hotel room backdrop, Joyce shares how she tapped into her work as a Production Designer to handcraft the set. Drawing upon childhood experiences that stick with you - especially if they’re out of the fringe, Joyce recounts her experience visiting a carnival as a child, the inspiration for her film, Vaudeville came alive. 04 Oct 2022 | S2E13 - The Undertow Took Me w/ Krista Loughton | 00:09:57
Host Joyce Kline catches documentary filmmaker Krista Loughton in the midst of Krista’s campaign for city councillor in the upcoming Victoria BC municipal election. Krista describes a harrowing incident in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown East Side that inspired her 20 year career fighting homelessness and addiction through filmmaking. Krista is widely known for the empathic documentary Us and Them (co-created with collaborator Jennifer Abbott) which followed the lives of four chronically homeless Victoria residents over an entire decade. The film premiered on CHEK TV and has been shown more than 70 times across Canada—including an exclusive parliamentary screening for Canada’s Members of Parliament. It includes cameos by famed addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Maté, Indigenous leader Chief Phil Lane Jr, and “Reverend Al” Tysick, former director of Our Place community support society. Though Krista initially thought Us and Them would be limited to her subjects’ day to day struggles, the film turned unexpectedly personal when Dr. Maté challenged her to examine her own personal pain. Listen in as Krista shares with host Joyce Kline how Dr. Maté helped her, what’s surprised her about running for political office, and why she creates films specifically to influence politicians. Every screenplay has at least one element that a filmmaker knows is going to be tricky to carry off. James is an award-winning Australian writer, director, editor and producer whose 16mm black and white “gothic psychodrama” NEST is one of the outstanding films in the 2023 Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival. 01 May 2024 | S4E6 - Tender Masculinity - w/ Andrés Felipe Ángel | 00:10:00
With all the talk about toxic masculinity, it’s a real treat to watch a film that explores traditionally held “masculine” qualities like aggression, competitiveness — even homophobia — while also acknowledging masculinity’s potential for tenderness, nurturance, and protectiveness. Working with amateur actors from the Bogotá barrio, filmmaker Andrés Felipe Ángel manages to pull that off and more in his sensitive autobiographical coming of age film Rage. It’s a real treat to hear Andrés share how he developed the film from a single visual image, why he’s a self-styled “cultural manager,” trends in Columbian filmmaking, being in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards, and finding the perfect litter of puppies he needed for Rage. Andrés is an audiovisual producer and live performer in the Bogotá drag scene. His films include Rage — Fieras in Spanish — and Bogotá Se Quema. Rage screened at the Moscow International Film Festival and the Bogotá Short Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Short Film and is in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards. Now it will screen in this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival. An accomplished actor, Ana also shares what it’s like to be flown to Prague for a Cascade commercial, and being cast as everything from Chinese to Indigenous...when you’re a Filipina-Canadian. Ana de Lara has 17 awards and 5 nominations for her award-winning short films and the two features she’s produced: All In Madonna and Open for Submissions. A Women in the Director’s Chair alumna, she won Telefilm’s New Voices Award, Talent to Watch, Whistler Film Festival MPPIA Award, Vancouver Women in Film Matrix and Best Narrative Short awards, Broad Humor Film Festival’s Best Director, and Asians on Film Best Comedy and Best Screenplay Awards.
