16 May 2019 | 002: Blight Town Wore Me Down | 00:58:03
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We all take a few stabs in the dark this week and discuss the random games that we've been powering through. We also ended up deciding on finally diving into the bugged-out world of Hollow Knight for next week's episode. Kevin plunges into the goopy goodness of Moonlighter, Randall takes to the links in Golf Story, and DJ rolls around for days (or 30 hours) with a soul full of darkness. Apologies for the low-ish energy this week--it's been a long one. We'll catch y'all next week.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. On this week's episode, Randall and Kevin finally get around to starting up Hollow Knight and see what all the fuss is about. DJ is on rails this week, and walks us through a couple of simulated experiences. Kevin and DJ round up a couple more roguelikes (including a brand new one, just out of early access). Randall also discusses a couple of Nintendo's recent multiplayer efforts.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we get to a bunch of other games on top of the Psikyo shmups we decided to touch upon last week. Kevin jumps into (yet) another roguelike, Randall hydroplanes into the eye of a hurricane, and--surprise, surprise--DJ beats a few more games. We also talk about a handful of multiplayer experiences.

28 Mar 2022 | Save it for the ’cast! — Issue #17 | 00:34:58
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' As always, Kevin gets things started by rattling off a handful of games he's been firing up lately before Randall & John join the party for all sorts of fun chit chat. We're all over the map this week, per usual, including our alcoholic beverages of choice, speculating on the future of the Nintendo Switch Online service, and much more!

07 Jun 2019 | 005: I Just Felt So Sweet | 01:16:30
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we get maniacal with the most recent 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game (and perhaps the best one to date?). DJ also hits the ramps in Trials: Fusion, while Kevin and Randy tackle a couple of new releases from indie-publishing giants Devolver Digital & Nicalis) in Gato Roboto and Crystal Crisis, respectively.

13 Jun 2019 | 006: Fulfill My Bloodlust | 01:16:38
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week we have a few (too many?) drinks as we discuss the kinetic new release from Gabe Cuzillo, Bennet Foddy, Matt Boch, & indie publishing powerhouse Devolver Digital, Ape Out. Kevin also follows up on last week's game with the spiritual successor to Sonic, Freedom Planet--just announced as a physical release from Limited Run Games. Randall also goes old school and plays some Battle Circuit—previously unreleased outside of Japan—from the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle. DJ races into our hearts with the competitive multiplayer racer, Onrush. Kevin & DJ also breeze through the beginning stages of The Swords of Ditto and Randy snags NBA 2K19 on the cheap and explores an old addiction.

20 Jun 2019 | 007: My Man Crocus Got a Raw Deal | 01:35:59
...or did he? Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week we talk the criminally-overlooked adventure game, Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King. We inevitably get sidetracked into a little Legend of Zelda discussion as well, as the comparisons are impossible to deny (in a good way). Kevin plays yet another roguelike this week with the minimalist-ish RTS game, Bad North. DJ tries to stay awake with a solo play through of Cuphead. And Randall shows off his competitive side with a double dose of competitive puzzlers, Puyo Puyo Champions & Super Puzzle Fighter II. We also briefly follow up on The Swords of Ditto from last week.

27 Jun 2019 | 008: The Genre is Breakout | 01:16:58
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we start the morning out right with an intense action-arcade puzzler, #Breakforcist Battle. Randall and DJ revisit a couple of games from last week—Randall polishes of Crocus and follows up on the remainder of his time with Blossom Tales, while DJ treads into the relentless waters of Bad North. Kevin scratches beneath the surface of the procedurally-generated dungeons in Unexplored, finally has a little fun playing Splatoon 2, and chips in to save par with a nifty little card-based puzzler with some serious headscratchers, Golf Peaks.

06 Jul 2019 | 009: They‘re Called ‘Barcades‘ | 01:23:17
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Sorry for the delay on posting the episode this week in lieu of the holiday. That said, with the little bit of extra time this week, we were all able to squeeze in some pretty serious gaming. To kick things off, we spend a little time (some of us, a lot) blowing away baddies in 20XX. DJ plows through Venture Kid, yet another game with heavy Mega Man influences. We dive into a trifecta of Nintendo releases, new and old, with Super Mario Maker 2, Box Boy! + Box Girl!, & Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker—all of which offer up some pretty stellar cooperative experiences. DJ finally conquers Bad North and also gets started on The Messenger. And finally, we wrap things up with Killer Queen, which is slated for release on Nintendo Switch & Steam very soon. We're also going to be veering from our original format a bit and switching to a game of the month (GOTM), as opposed to selecting a new game each week. It was proving to be a little bit overwhelming, and also ended up dictating our gaming habits. Plus, this will give anyone who wants to play along ample time to stay caught up—but who are we fooling? We're doing this for our own sanity...

12 Jul 2019 | 010: Way Too Much Game in that Game | 01:16:08
Welcome back to Pursuing...Polygons? We kick things off with a journey off the beaten path with a trio of three-dimensional, Triple-A experiences. Kevin finally starts tackling the Divine Beasts after 100+ hours of Breath of the Wild. DJ makes quick work (per usual) of Chloe's adventures in Uncharted: Lost Legacy. And Randall ventures back into the void that is NBA 2K19. We stick around in the wonderful world of 'sports' for a little while longer with OlliOlli: Switch Stance & Pato Box, and DJ gets us back on track with a couple of side-scrolling platformers, The Messenger & Ink.

19 Jul 2019 | 011: You Gotta Watch Out for LBJ | 01:25:41
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Ahhh...that's more like it. We're back to our more typical habits this week, and polishing off games that we've talked about in previous episodes. Uncle Randall is back on his bullshit, trying to rebuild the Pistons from scratch around Blake Griffin in NBA 2K19. But can he get past LeBron? He also plays Miles & Kilo along with Kevin, who actually finishes a game for once. Kevin & DJ also check out the demo for a brand new, local/online multiplayer game, Lethal League Blaze—a fighting game, baseball hybrid?! Kevin rounds out his week with a couple more platformers—one, an action-puzzler, MagiCat, and the other...you guessed it...a roguelite, just released this week, Eagle Island. Randall highlights a personal favorite of his on the Switch, Marble it Up!, a Super Monkey Ball/Marble Madness spiritual successor of sorts. DJ beats the The Messenger twice and proceeds to turning his brain off to revisit an old past time of competitive online gaming. He's back on Uncharted & Rocket League this week, and he won't stop until he wins a game, goddammit!
Timestamps: Lethal League Blaze - 00:03:22 Miles & Kilo - 00:12:31 The Messenger: Picnic Panic DLC - 00:22:50 MagiCat - 00:30:15 Marble it Up! - 00:38:05 Uncharted: Lost Legacy - 00:46:50 ↳ Uncharted 4: Online Multiplayer Rocket League - 00:50:22 Eagle Island - 00:55:06 The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - 01:06:21 NBA 2K19 - 01:14:15

25 Jul 2019 | 012: Octo-Directional | 01:27:45
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got another jam-packed week of gaming to discuss, so let's get right into it. Kevin & DJ follow-up on their time with a couple of games from last week, Eagle Island & The Witcher III. They also start channeling their inner Babe Ruth, calling shots in the new Astro Bears update with online Jetfish(?) leaderboards—perhaps it's all of the fine spirits we consume? DJ also starts stacking his deck in Gwent, a formerly-fictional card game set in The Witcher universe. Kevin & Randall scoop up Membrane on the cheap and discover a nifty little physics-based puzzle platformer, while DJ is a little let down by Nefarious, another game he snagged in a recent sale. The ground is literally lava in Space Dave! & Randall cools things down with another super tough shmup from way back in the Genesis/Mega Drive days, the Sega Ages remastered Lightening Force aka Thunder Force IV. Kevin plays along with the shmups, and appears to be a glutton for punishment, as he's back into TumbleSeed, and also checks out the two-player versus mode with DJ that was added after its initial release.
Timestamps: Membrane - 00:02:06 8 Bit Invaders - 00:14:31 The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - 00:22:09 ↳ Gwent - 00:30:18 Eagle Island - 00:33:32 TumbleSeed - 00:42:45 Lightening Force / Thunder Force IV (Sega Ages) - 00:52:07 Space Dave! - 01:01:28 Nefarious - 01:11:11 Astro Bears - 01:20:34

01 Aug 2019 | 013: Repeatedly Crouching, Doing a Dance | 01:25:57
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we have a highly anticipated appearance from John Heinze, as he joins us to talk about July's Game of the Month, the Castlevania-inspired Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. We 'casually' roll through a longer-than-usual discussion on that, and slip right into a follow-up from John, who has also been putting a ton of time into the recently released successor to Curse of the Moon, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Kevin & Randall talk another 8-bit throwback release from Inti Creates, this time drawing inspiration from the Mega Man series, in Mighty Gunvolt Burst. DJ scoops up Duke of Defense on the cheap just before recording the cast and discusses the first little chunk of the cooperative tower defense experience with Kevin—and in turn, talk us all into snagging this one as soon as we finished the recording. Randall & John dig up a few dead bodies, and into a discussion on the recently-released Dragon Quest Builders 2, and its predecessor, to close us out this week.

08 Aug 2019 | 014: The Pokémon are Getting More & More Hype | 01:41:23
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It's been a long, draining week, but somehow we've all managed to squeeze in quite a bit of gaming. We kick things off by revisiting one of our favorite 2D platformers, Celeste, inspired a great video from Game Maker's Toolkit. Randall channels his inner 'Tommy' and gives us all a free history lesson on pinball, bouncing around between a handful of video pinball titles from the Wii to the Switch. Kevin dips into the opening hours of Cosmic Star Heroine and is finding a really nice, streamlined JRPG experience thus far. DJ is still closing off avenues in The Witcher III, while also keeping up his usual streak of plowing through indie titles one after another, revisiting Duke of Defense from last week. Kevin & Randall also do a little revisiting of their own, sinking even more time into their current obsessions of Eagle Island & NBA2K19, respectively. And Randall brings us back into the past once again with yet another competitive puzzler from the N64 era, Pokémon Puzzle League.

16 Aug 2019 | 015: Here Come the Sepia Tones | 01:25:11
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We kick things off with a little expert analysis on a game that none of us have played, No Man's Sky, which just received its new Beyond update, also being dubbed '2.0.' Randall and DJ race through the Wipeout: Omega Collection. DJ steers the conversation towards Sniper Elite 4, the former and the latter both 'free' offerings on PS Plus this month. Randall follows that up with more 'free' games courtesy of the NES online service on Switch—a couple of semi-overlooked titles from the original NES library, Wario's Woods & Donkey Kong 3. We go faux-retro after that and talk a couple of classic indie games in Super Meat Boy & Fez. Randall and Kevin finish things off with a three-dimensional Super Meat Boy of sorts, RAZED, and a brief tease of our GOTM, Into the Breach.

23 Aug 2019 | 016: Taking it Nice | 01:07:45
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It was a busy week, but as always, we still managed to squeeze in quite a few games. DJ reminisces about the SOCOM days on the PS2 as he checks out some of the online modes in Sniper Elite 4. Kevin and Randall check out a couple of newer bulltethell shmup releases, one a re-release/re-imagining of a 'classic' arcade series in the Vasara Collection, and the other being a newer, zany indie title, Q-Yo Blaster. DJ (finally) polishes off Geralt's main quest in The Witcher III, though the DLC may end up calling his name in the future. Kevin recalls the first harrowing hours of his journey into No Man's Sky. Randall gets the retro juices flowing once again with ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, a sequel to the games that were initially released on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Randall and Kevin keep things cooking with Battle Chef Brigade: Deluxe—something tells me we'll be coming back for seconds!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels—and welcome back to our good buddy John Heinze, who joins us once again for another Game of the Month episode. For the month of August, we the fight the battle of Mechs vs. Veks in Into the Breach, another roguelike (chess-like?) strategy game. Kevin finally gets around to grabbing (and playing) Super Hot after it was surprisingly released during the Nintendo Indie World showcase. John continues convincing the rest of us to play Dragon Quest Builders 2, digging into some of the new Season Pass DLC. We also rekindle our love for the wonderful (and super cheap) cooperative card game, Hanabi, after playing it again at John's 'bachelor party' over the weekend.

09 Sep 2019 | 018: Until Next Time, We‘ll Catch Ya Next Time | 01:02:10
Welcome back to Pursing Pixels. John joins us once again this week, doing his best to keep us relevant with Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Kevin and DJ build a couple empires of their own in Kingdom: New Lands. Kevin and Randall follow that up with a look at the quickly-forgotten action-puzzler on the Switch/3DS, Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido. We wrap things up with a little more Nintendo talk, discussing the two most recent additions to the Switch's NES Online offerings. Randall takes a stroll down memory lane with Kung Fu Heroes, while Kevin takes a look at an overlooked gem, Vice: Project Doom.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. John is back once again, filling in for DJ this week. Randall and Kevin descend beneath the surface and look to set the record straight on Chasm. 20 SNES games have finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch—we have a quick round table highlighting what we've been playing since they arrived, including Stunt Race FX, F-Zero, Breath of Fire, & more. Kevin gives a quick update on his time with No Man's Sky, and continues his space travels with Astroneer & Void Bastards (both available on XBox Game Pass). John and Kevin wrap things up with some early impressions of Risk of Rain 2, and they can't wait to play more!

23 Sep 2019 | 020: NieR: Automatically | 01:15:33
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. John is officially paying Kevin rent, as he joins us for yet another week of gaming chatter, filling in for DJ. He's also the only one playing anything shiny and new, with the delightfully charming Wilmot's Warehouse. Kevin finally gets around to checking out NieR: Automata, crossing his fingers that his PS4 doesn't take flight. From there, Randall and John hack and slash their way through a longtime staple, Diablo III and follow that up with some more NBA 2K19 and general basketball talk. John's also takes a trip down (recent) memory lane, recapping his decade-and-a-half long experience with Kingdom of Loathing.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels—and welcome back to DJ! He's back with us this week for a discussion on September's GOTM, Katana Zero. Apart from that, we've all (for once) been playing through some new releases lately. Randall and Kevin give some early impressions on Untitled Goose Game. Randall also checks out one of the most intriguing games in the Apple Arcade lineup (though he's playing it on Switch), Sayonara Wild Hearts. DJ closes us out with the surprisingly lengthy (and difficult) final chapter of Celeste.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, Randall and Kevin take a trip to Koholint Island in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Kevin and DJ can't resist the call to the throne, this time taking a look at a 'sequel of sorts,' Kingdom: Two Crowns. Randall finishes off Chasm completionist-style, and shares some closing thoughts on one of our favorite indies in recent memory. DJ closes us out (and makes up for lost time) with a couple of brutal titles—Serial Cleaner, a stylish, jazzy little stealth game, and Darkest Dungeon, which needs no introduction...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, John fills in for Randall, and also joins the podcast full-time! (Or, at least whenever he can.) He's also a man of his word and is back to share some brief thoughts on a PP favorite, Chasm. Apart from that, we dance over to Cadence of Hyrule thank to a little nudge from Link's Awakening last week. John and Kevin each dip into new puzzle games out on the Switch—Cyber Protocol puts Kevin into a trance with it's neon-cyberpunk aesthetic & John introduces the rest of us to Crossniq+, a competitive puzzler with serious Y2K-era aesthetics. Kevin & DJ also blast their way through Omega Strike...a wish list game.

21 Oct 2019 | 024: Happy to Have it Back in My Life | 00:45:51
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're bent on utter destruction with a bunch of combat-heavy games to talk about this week. John is on the crew full-time, but we're still missing Randall for this one. Kevin gets things started with a new release of an early indie classic from Vlambeer, Super Crate Box. DJ finally gets around to trying his hand at 20XX—he beats it on hard mode and unlocks new characters that we didn't even know existed, to no one's surprise at all. John straps into his mech and turns his brain off (is that safe?) with the slightly under the radar, Nintendo-published Daemon X Machina. DJ takes us down to the gruesomely pixelated depths of the underworld with Slain: Back From Hell. We hang out a little while longer in the netherworld as John & DJ get into DOOM (2016) in anticipation of the upcoming (and slightly delayed) DOOM Eternal.

28 Oct 2019 | 025: Now I Gotta Do a Real Run | 01:13:28
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Randall's back this week just in time for October's GOTM, Caveblazers. He's also back to give us some early impressions of Nintendo's latest exercise-centric endeavor, Ring Fit Adventure—though it is certainly not the ideal game when you're under the weather. Kevin introduces DJ & John (and himself) to Race the Sun, a mighty thrilling, minimalistic auto-runner (flier?) experience. (Is Kevin ever gonna get the VR setup he keeps talking about?) John & Kevin get into a bit of a predicament with the visual novel/puzzle battler hybrid, The World Next Door. We also take some time to talk some more DOOM, as DJ inspired John to play through the entire game all over again, and we get some thoughts from Randall's end, as well.

04 Nov 2019 | 026: Goop Spikes | 01:01:56
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Kevin finishes another game, believe it or not, and digs into Anodyne with John, who is just getting into its early stages. Randall journeys back to an Elusive Age and somehow remembers the full title for Dragon Quest XI on Switch. John sticks in the realm of JRPGs and gets into the many quality of life improvements offered up in the new Remasters of the Final Fantasy series. DJ's still hanging around and hacking away in the Darkest Dungeon. And, to no one's surprise at all, Kevin's playing another indie platformer, Bomb Chicken.

11 Nov 2019 | 027: Downloading the Demo Now | 00:50:46
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. John is on an impromptu honeymoon, so we're back to the original trio for this week. Randall is on the Nintendo beat per usual, and gets in the Halloween spirit with their newest release, Luigi's Mansion 3. Kevin is bent on his usual tough-as-nails platformers and digs into a couple of small-ish indie titles, Kuso & Atomik RunGunJumpGun. DJ & Kevin are still chasing down the horizon in Race the Sun, which is quite the seductive autorunner experience—we've still gotta get our hands on a VR rig at some point! We also check out the demo for an unassuming 2.5D platformer that none of us had ever heard of, Jet Kave Adventure. DJ also has a short segment on Linelight, an attempt to reduce gameplay down to its most basic form.

17 Nov 2019 | 028: It Looks Like There‘s Gonna Be Some Aliens | 00:52:14
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the whole gang back, this time with a new video setup so Kevin, DJ, & John can look Randall in the eyes—unfortunately, there's a slight dip in audio quality thanks to the new & untested setup, but we'll have things back to normal in a couple of weeks. That said, there's nothing that will keep us from our weekly videogame gabbing, and we kick things off this week with the re-release of sorts, New Super Lucky's Tale, which we all checked out the demo for. From there, Kevin keeps the 3D platformer revival going with another new Switch release, A Hat in Time. Randall's on the retro beat again, looking at another great re-imagining of a forgotten classic, The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors. DJ looks at a little 'reboot' of his own, with the surprisingly difficult puzzle platformer, Seeders: Puzzle Reboot. We close things out with Randall & John talking a little more Dragon Quest XI S, now that the two of them are both well on their way towards victory.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Last episode with the slight change in the audio set up here, but we'll be back to normal next week. This week, we all take advantage of Qubic Games' loyalty program of sorts, and pick up Mana Spark for a buck on the Nintendo Switch—we're a little more mixed than usual on this one. After that, John look for some big air in Snowboarding: The Next Phase, and then takes us all on a little trip down memory lane with Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise thanks to a recent thrift store snag. DJ tackles another tough-as-nails platformer with simplistic (and maybe confusing?) controls, Standby. And we wrap things up with an indie classic from Studio Pixel, Cave Story, which should need no introduction.

06 Jun 2022 | Save it for the ’cast! — Issue #22 | 00:43:35
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' We're back at it this week after celebrating both our three year anniversary, and wrapping up an incredibly successful game jam — the inaugural edition of the Pursuing Pixels James Jam Game Gam, which is sure to become an annual affair! Kevin kicks things off with a few shoutouts from the PPJJGG that are getting some various 'post-jam' updates, before struggling a bit with the ol' Xbox One in an attempt to take a quick peek at Floppy Knights. From there, Randall joins the conversation to chat about all sorts of gaming goodness — like retro homebrew and some retro Kirby reminiscing — as well as a brief synopsis of Kevin's UFO sighting...

02 Dec 2019 | 031: Baba is Gone? | 00:52:46
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. What happened to episode 30? Only the GarageBand gods know. Thankfully we had an extra episode in the can and we're back with number 31 without missing a beat. And we're all still playing Baba is You, so we'll be getting back to that soon enough. Until then, this week we're all pretty into everything we've been sinking our time into. DJ, Kevin, John (& our buddy Glenn) played some Flat Heroes right before recording and can't wait to keep chipping away at the top spots on the leaderboards. DJ kicks off an interstellar sci-fi adventure, Planet Alpha, and may have talked Kevin into giving the demo another try. Randall & Kevin are inspired by Kevin's recent romp through Cave Story, and plow all the way through Studio Pixel's follow-up, Kero Blaster. John wraps things up with (a lot of) family time and talks about his their history with the Civlization board game from the 80s, published by Avalon Hill—we dip into a brief discussion on our experience with the computer/console series, as well.

24 Feb 2020 | 042: You Always Speak in Hyperbole | 00:47:25
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. The whole gang is here again and we're going back to our roots, squeezing in a little chaos mode (aka 4v4) in Rocket League before recording today's episode. John also talks a bunch about the newly released console edition of Kentucky Route Zero—we also get into a bit of a lengthy chat about story-driven games in general, each of us coming at the genre from a pretty diverse set of angles. Kevin gripes a bit about Rogue Singularity, but is having a pretty good time with it overall, in spite of its considerable levels of jank. And everyone but Randall is still playing Wizard of Legend...and it's still getting the best of us (even DJ?!?).

09 Dec 2019 | 032: I‘ve Just Discovered the Concept of ‘All‘ | 00:47:13
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're back and sounding better than ever, and we're taking another shot at Baba is You, which was our GOTM for the month of November (and our final GOTM for the time being). Kevin tries his best to figure out what is going on (and what DJ is talking about) in the retro-tinged metroidvania, Overwhelm. We all take advantage of another ridiculous deal from Qubic Games and snagged One Strike on the cheap, a fun little 1v1 arcade fighter. John wraps us up with a journey through the Pokémon franchise, as he wraps up his adventures in Pokémon Sword/Shield.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shuffling things up a little bit this week with Kevin, Randall, & John finally get around to seeing what all the hubbub around Slay the Spire is all about. DJ, feeling a little left out, sinks some time into the Euchre 3D app on his phone, getting some practice in for the euchre league he plays in on the weekends. DJ primarily sticks to the online games this week with a little inspiration from Titanfall 2 and dips into Season 3 of Apex Legends before revisiting an old multiplayer favorite with The Last of Us' 'Factions' mode. Kevin & Randall close things out with another space shooter that hearkens back to classic shmup series like Gradius & R-Type.

23 Dec 2019 | 034: You Get to Play as Chunky Link | 01:09:20
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We squeezed in a marathon recording this week and knocked out a trifecta of episodes, including a holiday special that we will have out next week. In the first, regular, episode of the batch we're keeping up with the trends and playing a bunch of new (and 'new') releases. We kick things off by digging into the Shovel Knight: King of Cards campaign, the final, and perhaps the best, of the free Treasure Trove DLC that has been steadily trickling out over the last five plus years. Then John talks a little Ashen, which is new to the Nintendo Switch. Kevin finally gets his hands on Jamestown+, which was released on PC way back in 2011, but is finally out on consoles with two new levels, and more! DJ gets hooked on Hopiko, and does his best work to cleanse our beloved consoles of their viruses. Randall & John close us out with a little Super Mario Maker 2.0 update discussion, primarily digging into chunking Link's new set of maneuvers.
Timestamps: Shovel Knight: King of Cards - 00:01:33 Ashen - 00:22:51 Jamestown + - 00:40:10 Hopiko - 00:49:57 Super Mario Maker 2 (2.0 update) - 00:58:00

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' This week, Kevin kicks things off with some of the local multiplayer gaming sessions he's been getting in with some old friends, now that he's getting a little more settled in back in Michigan. He also dives into the back-and-forth process of finally acquiring a physical copy of Demon Throttle on Nintendo Switch, and even touches briefly on the Paper Mario series! After that, both John & Randall join in on the conversation, and we talk about all sorts of video gaming related goodies! Everything from some various thoughts on September's Nintendo Direct, Bowser battles in Mario games — and they're both still chipping away at Elden Ring, as well...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the whole crew back in the house once again and plenty of video gaming goodies to dive into, so let's get things rolling... Randall gets things started off with an update on his time with the Resident Evil 4 Remake, as he plunges into the recently re-released Separate Ways DLC. John takes over from there and spends a little time gushing about Neon White, after finally firing it up while being disconnected from the internet for a few days. Finally, Kevin closes things out this week with a little bit of a 'Save it for the 'cast!' style discussion, as he struggles to find a gameplay loop that will properly satisfy his neo retro arcade cravings.

It's been quite a while since we've been shorthanded for an episode — but while Randall's busy spending some quality time with family this week, John & Kevin are digging into all sorts of video gaming goodness... That said, we've been super swamped with both work & life over the past couple of weeks — so we decided to keep things a little more conversational this week, and do things 'Save it for the 'cast!' style! We finally get around to talking a little Minit after the challenge was issued to Randall a couple of months back. After that, we all talk some SteamWorld Dig 2—yeah, this game is awesome! He also spends a few minutes spotlighting a couple of games that he really enjoyed during some recent livestreams, while testing out the new, semi-temporary video setup! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're jam-packed with video game goodies to discuss this week, so let's get right into the action... John gets the ball rolling with a quick shoutout to Stardew Valley, which somehow continues to receive one massive update after another! Kevin picks up the ball from there, and gives some love to a couple of 3D platformers that he's fired up recently — the charming (and slightly janky) Woodle Tree 2: Deluxe, and the incredibly energetic demo for Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom. Randall keeps things rolling with his latest retro obsession — the Neo Geo Pocket, courtesy of his new Analogue Pocket adapters (for now) — as his digs into SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium. Finally, John closes things out with an update on his monster hunting endeavors, as he goes back to Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Nintendo Switch for this first time since initially scooping it up at launch.

John gets things started off with his thoughts on Loddlenaut, as he ignores the adorable Axolotls and still manages to see the credits roll. Randall picks up the torch from there, as he continues to dump A TON of time into SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash on both his Analogue AND Neo Geo Pockets. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded this week, with Randall out thanks to a super hectic schedule over the last few weeks — but Kevin & John are here to hold down the fort with all sorts of gaming goodies, per usual! Kevin kicks things off with a bit of a deeper dive into Wildfrost, after spending quite a bit more time with this deckbuilding roguelike since he last brought it up on a recent Save it for the 'cast! episode. John takes the opportunity to dive a little deeper into a couple of games that had the hooks in him the last time we got together — (the) Gnorp Apologue and Hexle. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're still locked down in quarantine mode and hope you're all staying healthy and safe. Thankfully video games have been keeping us nice and distracted in these trying times—so distracted that we completely forgot to say the name of our first game of the week, Children of Morta, which we've got widely differing opinions on. Kevin's also still chipping away at Caveblazers, and briefly talks about some of his recent runs and streams on our Twitch channel. He also finally gets around to playing Wilmot's Warehouse, which John recommended a while back on the podcast. We wrap things up with a sale discussion, kicked off by a brief chat about Conduct Together!, which we all picked up for the criminally low price of a penny on the Nintendo Switch eshop.

30 May 2022 | Episode Number: Three Year Anniversary Edition | 00:45:30
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It’s hard to believe it’s been over three years since we started up this project!?! In typical anniversary episode fashion, we're each going to be digging into one of our a favorite game of ours that somehow hasn't managed to come up on the podcast yet... Kevin gets things started with one of his all-time favorite co-op experiences on the Super Nintendo. Randall sticks around in the retro realm for his pick as well, and talks about one of his favorite games on the Sega Saturn. John brings us back into semi-contemporary times, with a selection of one of his favorite games from Nintendo's previous handheld device...

21 Oct 2024 | Save it for the 'cast! — Issue #84 | 00:37:06
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' First things first...the first ever Pursuing Pixels Community Jam is officially under way! After that, Kevin does his best to keep the intro short & sweet, as he quickly revisits a few things he's been playings — and in the process, totally forgets to mention that he & John also dive into his resolution game for this year, Return of the Obra Dinn. After that, John rattles off a whole bunch of the games that he's been booting up on his Steam Deck lately — which ends up leading us into a number of other discussions!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. The full crew is in the house once again and we've got all sorts of goodies to dive into, so let's get right to it! Randall kicks things off with a little fighting game action, as he shares some of his first impressions on Street Fighter 6 after finally getting a chance to dig into it last week. From there, Kevin gushes about a couple of indie games that he's been having loads of fun with during some of his recent livestreams — Roto Force and JellyCar Worlds. Finally, John gets us back on track, as we close out the episode with some more Tears of the Kingdom chit chat, and get some more updates on both his and Randall's adventures...

07 Feb 2022 | 120: Saving It For The Sequel | 00:49:31
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. You're stuck with the original duo of Kevin & Randall this week, but we've got plenty of games to talk about, so let's get right into it... Kevin kicks things off this week talking about a few of the livestreams he's been doing over on our Twitch channel lately, starting off with the all-time classic, Super Mario World. He's also back on his cursor-clicking bullshit, and really enjoying his time with Please, Touch The Artwork and Townscaper. From there, Randall shares his thoughts on the latest installment in the Mario Party franchise, and it sounds like Nintendo finally got this one right after a few half-hearted entries in the long-running series. Kevin wraps things up with a couple other games that he played during livestreams recently, including a short & sweet metroidvania, Trash Quest, and an incredibly addictive arcade roguelike, UPSQUID.

10 Jul 2023 | 154: What’s The Dumbest Solution? | 00:54:12
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. First things first, we ran into some technical issues with John's audio during this session, as I'm sure you'll notice right away! Once again, his computer has decided to record the audio from his built-in laptop mic — but the discussion here was too much fun to leave on the cutting room floor, so we're rolling with what we've got... With that out of the way, Randall gets things rolling this week with some final thoughts on the Resident Evil 4 Remake, before tossing the ball over to Kevin for a little more Capcom action with Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. From there, Kevin spends a little time *digging* into Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon after snagging it for half-off during a recent sale on Nintendo Switch. And finally, John & Randall close us out with an update on their adventures so far in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom...

Kevin gets the ball rolling this week with a little rapid fire indie game action, giving a quick shoutout to a bunch of the games that he's been playing on Switch & streaming on Twitch! 29 Mar 2021 | 095: Cancel That Ghost | 00:41:15
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. First things first, you're probably going to hear a little bit of crackling in the background this week (particularly in the back half of the episode), due to a janky mic cable that has since been replaced. That said, let's get to the video games! Kevin's been spending some more time hanging out in the SELF discord, also known as 'the bugcord,' and couldn't wait to check out the game's first patch, featuring some seriously challenging new levels! And thanks to the bugcord community, he also discovered the lovely little platformer, Clockwatch, from Aplove Studio. Randall has been diving head first into his collection of homebrew retro cartridges lately, and this week he takes some time to highlight Tanzer, another modern Sega Genesis/Mega Drive release from Mega Cat Studios. Bouncing off of that, Kevin quickly highlights Magnet Man Adventures from Ohsat Games, who is another indie developer that plays around in the retro Sega realm. John is digging deeper & deeper into Stardew Valley and getting into some of the endgame activities, as he continues to be blown away by the ongoing efforts of ConcernedApe. We wrap things up with a little more Wild Guns talk, which Randall & Kevin had a chance to stream earlier in the week...and made it all the way to the final boss—John even hopped in on the call and hung out with us for a bit! Kevin also debates streaming some Aztec Ride: Quetzalcoatl in the future, after getting totally hooked on it before recording the episode tonight.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' Sane Trilogy on Xbox Game Pass, getting hooked on 20 Minutes Till Dawn on Nintendo Switch, and some quick first impressions of Dadish 3D and Super Fowlst 2. Randall jumps into the conversation after that, and we dive into all sorts of retro gaming goodies — kicking things off with a handful of retro arcade gems, import games & fan translations, and much more...

19 Jul 2021 | 106: Unlocked the Ability to Unlock | 00:41:08
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Kevin and John are keeping the video game train rolling this week, although John’s dipping his toes into a little tabletop action, as well… But before we get to that, John is still spending loads of time with Monster Hunter: Rise and itching to sync up with some pals for an online multiplayer session—we’ll definitely have to check back in (again) once he does some cooperative monster hunting! Kevin also gives a shout out to Ynglet, the latest game from indie game ‘legend’ Nifflas, before we dig deeper into what’s been consuming the majority of our time this week. We gab quite a bit about the brilliantly designed (and absolutely gorgeous) Iris and the Giant, a lovely deckbuilding puzzle-strategy roguelite that Kevin has been having an extremely difficult time putting down, ever since picking it up! And John has been spending a bunch of free time preparing his army for battle in Warhammer 40,000—everything from researching the many different factions to painting the figurines! Finally, we wrap up with a discussion about Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which Kevin has been playing a good deal of, lately. We’re both incredibly mixed on this game, for a multitude of different reasons, as it does so many things right, while missing the mark in more than a few ways...will Kevin see this one through to the end?

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels...and welcome back DJ! He's certainly been playing his fair share of games since he's last been on the show, and he kicks us off with a debriefing of everything he's polished off in the last six months. After that, DJ & John take a deeper dive into Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, specifically highlighting some of the game's 'extra' modes. Randall keeps us in the metroidvania realm a little longer, as he nears the end of Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom. Kevin finally gets around to checking out The Messenger, which DJ praised on the podcast a while back, and he's been harping on the rest of us to play it ever since. We also gave Sea Salt another try after having some technical issues a few weeks back, and are happy to report that it was smooth sailing after reinstalling the game—and the game is still awesome!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, it's Randall and Kevin holding down the fort, as we dig a little deeper into some of the games we've discussed on recent episodes... Randall gets things started with some more Resident Evil 4: Remake talk, after getting the chance to spend some quality time with The Mercenaries DLC mode. After that, we spend a bunch of time chatting some more Super Mario Bros. Wonder, as Kevin has now seen the credits roll, and Randll continues to chip away at his co-op campaign. Finally, we close things out with a little multiplayer goodie bag chit chat, as Randall has been going back to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Kevin continues to try to get better at Mario Kart 8, before the final batch of DLC courses drop!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' Kevin gets the ball rolling with another batch of indie gems that he snagged for ridiculously cheap on Nintendo Switch over the last couple of weeks — and even makes time for a quick shoutout to the incredible OSTs for Mario Golf & Mario Tennis on the Game Boy Color! John & Randall jump into the conversation from there, as John shares some gripes with his Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order experience so far, before he digs into it fully on next week's proper episode. We also discuss a couple of classic scenes (and their TV edits) from The Big Lebowski & Happy Gilmore, a few classic toys & board games from our childhoods, and more...

06 Dec 2021 | 116: Let‘s Be Thankful for the Scraps | 00:47:11
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. John and Kevin are back in the saddle this week and we've got plenty of gaming goodness to get to, so let's get right into it... Kevin gets things started with a couple of incredible indie shmups, Spectrum Forces and Viral Reload, both of which he's had a really tough time putting down lately! John springs for Nintendo's new 'Online Expansion Pass' and digs into the new Animal Crossing DLC, along with some of the new Nintendo 64 additions—we'll have to get Randall's thoughts on the Genesis selections soon! Finally, Kevin wraps things up with a couple of puzzle-focused games that he's also been hooked on as of late, Nojong and Evertried—the former, a brick-dropping + Mahjong hybrid, and the latter, a strategy-heavy roguelike with some supremely well-balanced mechanics.

13 Jul 2020 | 061: What is this, ‘Guess Who?‘ | 00:41:49
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're a duo once again, with Randall tagging in for John this week. Kevin wastes no time before correcting his failure to mention BREAKER from Daniel Linssen last week, yet another game included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice & Equality. Randall literally dips his toes into the latest Animal Crossing: New Horizons update, which introduces swimming into the mix. He also finally gets into some Risk of Rain 2 after our incessant begging—and a massive new update that has the game running fantastic on Nintendo Switch! Kevin talks about a few games from Matt Glanville, starting off with a couple of games that just came out on Switch. Singled Out seems to be 'Guess Who?' in video game form...with a sniper rifle. Ghost Grab 3000 is an insanely addictive arcade experience (with a grappling hook!?!) that is beyond difficult to put down. And the same goes for Switch 'N' Shoot, a single-button shmup where 'one more run' never means 'one more run.' All three games are available for Nintendo Switch and will only set you back $5 each! Randall's been sinking most of his time into The Last of Us: Part II, which he's been enjoying on the whole, in spite of some hiccups in the story line along the way. There's no need to worry about *spoilers* either, as Randall primarily highlights his main interest in the series...the gameplay. Kevin wraps up the episode with a couple of bullet hell shooters form the itch.io bundle that he teased on least week's episode—Task Force Kampas & Risk System. The former being a single credit, arcade experience, while the latter is a story-driven, 32-bit pixel art extravaganza; each one baking the concept of risk/reward straight into their core.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we're back in JRPG mode, as Randall gets pretty deep into Xenoblade Chronicles 2, while Kevin plays a bit of catch up—also rekindling John's love for this game. DJ is still chipping away at Baba is You, and is getting well into the meta late game—yes, he's seen the credits roll, but what does that even mean? John dusts off his copy of Advance Wars: Dual Strike on Nintendo DS after our WarGroove conversation a couple of weeks back, and we talk a bit about the pros & cons of each game's approach. Kevin wraps things up with some more Titanfall 2 and kicks DJ's initial game challenge back over to Randall (and the rest of the gang), who will be playing Minit in the (somewhat) near future.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' Kevin gets things started this week by saying a brief thank you to our supporters on Patreon, who recently helped us hit our first Monthly Milestone! From there, he takes a little time to dig into one his favorites from the Sokpop Super Bundle so far, Guardener, which is one of their most recent releases. He also takes a few minutes to give a shoutout to MOONPONG, the latest release from PUNKCAKE Délicieux, which releases the same day as this episode! After that, John & Randall join the conversation for a collage of snippets from a recording session a few weeks back, including the woes (and joys!) of living with dogs/cats, information overload, piling up the wishlists, and much more...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're back to our normal audio quality levels this week and digging into all sorts of multiplayer madness, so let's get right into the action... First things first, we dig a little deeper into Mario Strikers: Battle League after getting Randall's first impressions on the podcast a couple weeks ago. Kevin & Randall also ended up playing through the entirety of TMNT: Shredder's Revenge together on Xbox Game Pass, after syncing up for their Strikers session! From there, John & Kevin dig into an online multiplayer session of their own, after syncing up with their bandmates for some Steam Remote Play action! The highlight of the night was definitely Pac-Man 256 — and we wrapped things up with Golf With Your Friends, after struggling to remember what the heck we played before the recording tonight...

We've got the whole crew in the house this week for our first recording session of the new year — and the first proper numbered episode recorded with Kevin in his new apartment! Kevin gets things started off with some first impressions on Lil Gator Game after ripping through the opening hour or so, and immediately falling in love! After that, Randall hits the ground running, and dives right into his resolution game for 2024 — and shares some quick thoughts about his new Analogue Duo, as well. Monster Hunter: WorldJohn's been spending a whole bunch of time playing Monster Hunter: World on his newly acquired Steam Deck, and experimenting with all sorts of different weapons. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Sony finally throws us a bone on PlayStation Plus with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and Randall & Kevin waste no time getting into it! From one online-multiplayer game to another, John's been getting a daily dose of Dauntless lately, and Kevin joins him on a couple of quests. Kevin dives into the murky waters of Sea Salt, an incredibly unique action-strategy game that's even tougher to describe in writing than it is in spoken word. However, there's certainly more than a hint of Pikmin in its DNA—we reminisce about the entire series, in anticipation of Pikmin 3's arrival on Nintendo Switch!

They're going to be releasing a new game every month on their itchio page...or you can snag all of their games at a discounted price via Patreon subscription—and the games will eventually be coming to Steam, as well! Kevin and Rémy talk about all sorts of video game shenanigans, including the previous works of the PUNKCAKE team on the PICO-8 fantasy console, Rémy's work on his custom SUGAR game engine, and all sorts of other fun stuff—including their very first game as a duo, Antecrypt.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' As always, Kevin gets things started with a roundup of the stuff he's been digging into as of late, kicking things off with Revita, which just came out of Early Access. And for a little more roguelike action, he also finally dove into Going Under, which has been sitting on his Nintendo Switch for ages now. After that, he gives a quick shoutout to Tanuki Sunset, which effortlessly combines raccoons & longboarding, alongside a healthy dose of new wave synth pop! From there, John & Randall join in on the conversation and we get into all sorts of basketball nonsense, including March Madness, NBA Playoffs, and much more...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the whole crew in the house this week, and all sorts of (mostly retro) video gaming goodness to dive into, so let's get rolling!? Randall gets things started by chatting about some recent session with his Analogue Pocket, after finally getting around to digging into Metroid: Zero Mission. From there, Kevin gives a quick shoutout to Samurai Kid, an awesome Game Boy Color puzzle platformer that never made its way over to North America, before leaning into some homebrew NES games from the prolific Matt Hughson. Finally, John closes things out this week on a bit of a 'downer' note, as we dig into the state of advertising in mobile & free-to-play games, and the future of mid-tier development studios.

10 May 2021 | Episode Number: Two Year Anniversary Edition | 01:09:51
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It’s hard to believe it’s been a full two years since we started up this project!?! We’re gonna break the mold just a little bit this week and take a little time to discuss some of our favorite games that somehow haven’t come up on the podcast yet. But before we get to that, we’ve got another franchise we need to revisit… On the very first episode of the podcast, we discussed the first ‘season’ of the current-gen Hitman trilogy in an effort to step out of our respective indie & retro comfort zones, so we decided to take a look at the subsequent entries in the franchise to kick things off—plus, we NEED to get John’s opinions!! After that, we move into a discussion of our ‘comfy cozy’ games: our aforementioned favorites that have yet to come up on the show! Unsurprisingly, we spend the majority of this discussion hanging out in retro land, looking back to some of our favorite gaming memories, many from the N64 era. We wrap things up with a brief chat reflecting back on the last two years, and also looking forward to the years to come! We’d truly love to get your feedback on ways you’d like to see us grow and expand this project in the future, so PLEASE don’t hesitate to drop us a line at: pursuingpixels@gmail.com—we’d love to hear from ya!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio back together this week and we've got all sorts of video game goodness to dig into, so let's get right into it... Kevin kicks things off with a brief discussion about a handful of games that he and our pal Mikee kicked around a few weeks back, including classics like TowerFall, alongside classics-in-the-making like Samurai Gunn 2. From there, Randall & Kevin dive into the recently released Grapple Dog from Super Rare Originals, which we've both been absolutely loving—along with our thoughts on the demo for Rusted Moss, which also features a grappling hook! After that, Randall appears to have found his latest sports-simulation obsession, this time digging into Retro Bowl, which recently made its way over to the Nintendo Switch. Finally, John closes us out with his initial impressions on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, after swinging over Kevin's apartment for a quick livestream a few weeks back in an effort to talk him out of succumbing to his latest case of FOMO...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio in the house once again this week, and we've all been playing some stuff on Nintendo Switch... First, John's been continuing to dig through his backlog of indie games and shares his feelings on Paratopic — along with some additional thoughts on various low rez horror games and walking simulators. It's all things 2D Mario after that, as Randall & Kevin have both been diving full-tilt into Super Mario Bros. Wonder — and they each have all sorts of things to say about their time with the game so far!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' After that, John & Randall join the conversation and we're ALL over the map this week! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got a whole bunch of video game goodness to gab about this week—and we're even semi-timely for a change, haha—so let's get right into it... We kick things off with Goodboy Galaxy, a *brand new* metroidvania coming to the Game Boy Advance, cartridge and all! We hang around on the classic Nintendo handheld for a little while longer, as Randall recently polished off Metroid Fusion, now he's finding more & more time to play games again, post-graduation!! :D From there, Kevin & John get to take yet another stab at virtual reality, this time finally getting to see what Half-Life: Alyx is all about over at our buddy Mikee's place... Finally, John closes things out with a duo of photography games, first sharing some more thoughts on New Pokémon Snap after it has received a free update or two, followed by a glowing endorsement for Umurangi Generation—a 'current-apocalyptic' first-person adventure off the beaten path!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got an absolutely jam-packed episode this week, so let's get right into the video games!?! Kevin kicks things off with a couple of games that he's been absolutely loving lately — OlliOlli World + Dodgeball Academia — one of which is a potential contender for his ever-changing favorite game of all-time! From there, Randall digs into Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, a collection of two beat 'em up, retro-arcade 'classics' that don't get anywhere near enough love in modern times. Finally, we wrap things up with a deep dive into Dicey Dungeons, which all three of us have been playing lately — and was also John's resolution game for this year on our most recent holiday episode.

19 Apr 2021 | 098: The Correct Number of ‘V‘s | 00:57:06
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We’re itching to dig into some ‘retro gaming’ goodness on ALL fronts this week, so let’s get right into the action… Kevin kicks things off with an awesome new indie arcade game, Satryn, that is heavily inspired by retro classics like Robotron, while simultaneously leaving them in the dust—this one is still a work-in-progress, so we’ll definitely be keeping you updated! From there, John & Kevin dig deep into a handful of games on the PICO-8 fantasy console! We kick things off with a couple of gems from one of our favorite indie devs, Sebastian Lind, Cards With Personalities & I Demand Coffee—the former is an incredibly deep deckbuilding RPG, while the latter is a super solid puzzle platformer! After that, we dig into a couple of precision platformers, GRiPPY & Yolo Solo, each with their own unique take on climbing your way around from point A to point B. Finally, Randall & Kevin keep the NES/Famicom train rolling from last week, and check out a couple more semi-obscure titles from Nintendo’s 8-bit era. First, we dig into the run ‘n’ gun platformer Metal Storm from Irem—which has even seen a modern re-release from retro-bit that Randall scooped up, with a bunch of extra goodies! After that, we briefly touch on Kabuki: Quantum Fighter from HAL Laboratories (yes, that HAL Laboratories?!?!?), before springboarding into yet another conversation about difficulty in retro games, versus the modern indie games that might give some of us all the ‘retro’ we need...

14 Oct 2024 | 186: Fake Fictional Fantasy Console | 00:42:25
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded again this week, but John & Kevin have been doing plenty of video gaming lately, so let's get right into the action! Kevin kicks things off with his first impressions of UFO 50 — a massive collection of "retro" games made for a fictional console from the 1980s — from the developer of Spelunky and friends! From there, John & Kevin take a little time to shine a spotlight on 20 Minutes Till Dawn, after both getting pretty sucked into this one. Is 20 minutes the perfect length for a roguelike/roguelite run?! Kevin's also been absolutely hooked on another roguelike in Shogun Showdown, which has an incredible blend of puzzle solving, turn-based strategy, and deckbuilding RPG elements. Finally, John wraps things up with his thoughts on EVERSPACE, as he continues his quest to find a modern day on-rails shooter that lives up to Star Fox 64.

Kevin gets things started off with a few of the games that he's been playing (and trying to stream) lately — including the stunning demo for Europa, a couple of awesome indie puzzlers, and a quick shoutout to the prolific Panda Indie Studio. John and Randall jump into the conversation after that, as we touch on all sorts of video gaming goodies (and a little bit of wrestling, too) — including a little more Dark Souls talk, John's first foray into some of the early releases from PUNKCAKE Délicieux on his handy dandy Steam Deck, and much more...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we've got only one game to discuss, and that game is the incredibly addictive (and recently released) Balatro! It's pretty rare for us to dedicate an entire episode to a singular video game, but Balatro's got the hooks in all three of us at this point, and something tells me at least one of us will be bringing this one up again at the end of the year...

06 Jul 2020 | 060: No Chaperones | 00:47:37
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. John & Kevin warm up the mics by talking about their resolution games from our 2019 holiday episode. John is actually digging into Transistor from Supergiant Games, while Kevin can't believe that Undertale is not available on Xbox One. Kevin is still poking around on itch.io and stumbles across a unique developer named Daniel Linssen. There's a fast-paced puzzler called Adrena-Line, along with a couple of unique 2D platformers—Outline & Birdsong. John wraps us up by scratching the Final Fantasy Tactics itch with a new game on Switch, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. We springboard into a conversation about visual juxtaposition & cohesiveness from there, before calling it a night.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're missing Randall once again, but we'll be back to full-strength next week! In the meantime, John (and his wife Lauren) are getting into shape with Ring Fit Adventure—and we get a second wholehearted endorsement for Nintendo's exercise-JRPG hybrid. DJ's hitting the rails with some sort of two-wheeled unicycle (also known as a bike?) in FutureGrind. Kevin keeps the retro train rolling in Randall's absence once again, this time going with Kirby Super Star. We talk a little more about everyone's favorite pink puffball after that, as DJ & John resist digging into their wallets while playing through Super Kirby Clash, a free-to-play incarnation of the franchise on Nintendo Switch. We wrap things up with Super Time Force Ultra, which incorporates the concept of time travel into gameplay in some incredibly clever (and insane) ways.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. First things first, apologies for the little bit of extra background noise this week — it's nothing terrible, but we always like to give a quick heads up when there's any audio issues. That said, we've got the whole crew in the house once again and, as per usual, all sorts of video game goodness to discuss... John gets us started off with his thoughts on the neo retro 3D metroidvania, Pseudoregalia, after getting completely sucked in by its expressive movement & combat systems! After that, Kevin gives a quick shoutout to a couple of metroidvania-adjacent games that he got a chance to play during his recent Chicago trip — including spending some more time with Gunbrella, and a few couch co-op sessions with Nobody Saves the World (with PP podcast veteran, DJ). Finally, Randall wraps things up with some more Neo Geo Pocket Color action — including the fact that he recently scooped up a modded NGPC handheld console — as he digs into SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash.

27 Sep 2021 | 111: You‘re Really Close to a Bullet | 00:43:32
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we are fortunate enough to be joined by yet another indie game developer, Matt Glanville! We've raved about pretty much all of Matt's games on the podcast in the past, and it is truly an honor to have him on the show to talk about some video games—and he'll be on again next week for a more in-depth discussion about his work! In the meantime, Matt & Kevin have both been playing some SNKRX and admiring its deep, but simple design—and have a strikingly similar experience with the game. And while we're on the topic of shmups, Matt also fired up Alien Death Mob after we mentioned it a few weeks ago on the podcast...he's getting his butt kicked too! From there, we talk about a couple of incredibly charming, and deceptively tricky, retro-inspired platformers—Miles & Kilo, which we've raved about on the podcast before, and Mekabolt, which is the first game Kevin has actually 'beat' in quite some time! Speaking of things we've discussed on the podcast before, Matt is sinking his teeth into the Picross S Series that John has sang the praises of many times before. He's also been getting some casual gaming in with a little one of his own, and getting some mileage out of some cute & playful Nintendo Switch demos with his son! Finally, we wrap things up with Snakebird Primer after bringing up the game's far more difficult successor a few weeks back on the podcast, as Kevin & Matt seemingly had the same experience with the original game.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're all back this week and talking some video games—and doing our best to keep ourselves distracted. Kevin is still hooked on Forager...to the point where he's pawned the cartridge off on John in order to move onto to something new next week. John is in a similar boat, and gets into the minutia of Rune Factory 4: Special, which was recently re-released on Switch. DJ gets into a couple of horror games, with SOMA & Resident Evil &: Biohazard—and Kevin invites John & DJ over to do some horror game streaming in the (hopefully near) future. Randall closes us out with another, much needed, NBA2K20 fix, in lieu of the remainder of the 2020 season.

From there, Kevin also gives a shoutout to a trio of awesome indies that he played through recently, including an updated on one of our most-anticipated upcoming metroidvanias! After the indie update, John & Randall join the discussion and we get into all sorts of video game goodness — everything from Tunic, to The Lost Vikings, to Chex Quest, and beyond...

After a bit of a hiatus, Randall was back on the podcast last week for the first time in a few months—he's done with school for good now, so it's nothing but video games from here on out... :) All kidding aside, it was great catching up with Randall last week—so much so that we ended up chatting for 2+ hours before we started rolling, including a whole bunch of video game goodies that we're bringing to you this week! Before we get to that, Kevin gives a quick shoutout to our pal HIS, who is not only responsible for our incredible new artwork, but also spent some time getting his ass whooped in Samurai Gunn 2 this past weekend—which is shaping up to be one of the most promising fighting games in recent memory! Kevin is also absolutely HOOKED on Kingdom: Two Crowns again, after finally digging into the Dead Lands DLC, a seemingly *random* crossover with the Bloodstained series? Whatever the reason for its existence, we'll take any excuse to play some more Kingdom! :D

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, John plows through Forager and is ready to get that cartridge back over to Kevin so he can finally dip his toes into the dungeons. From there, Randall & John are living that island life in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Kevin & Randall both check out The Watcher, the latest addition to the roster of playable characters in Slay the Spire. Kevin wraps things up with one of his most anticipated sequel-of-sorts, Exit the Gungeon.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we're talking the state of retro gaming today from all angles in the back half of the episode. We actually had to cut ourselves off due to time constraints, so there will surely be more retro material to come in the future! But before we get to the general convo, Kevin follows up on the Yoshi talk from last week, and gets into some Yoshi's Island with Randall, transitioning perfectly into the most recent Super Famicom export on Switch, Panel de Pon (aka Tetris Attack! here in the states). John is starting to find his footing in Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. We're back to Randall & Kevin after that, who've both been playing some Timespinner, and is giving us both some Chasm vibes, which can never be a bad thing. Finally, transitioning us into the retro conversation, Kevin beat another entry in the Shovel Knight franchise, Specter of Torment.

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' This week, Kevin kicks things off with a couple of games from Wired Dreams Studio, including a spotlight on their upcoming roguelike, Undergrave. He also takes a little time to highlight the Bundle for Ukraine on itchio, which has already raised nearly $5 million...and there's still four days left to go!?! He's been absolutely loving the highly acclaimed ZeroRanger so far, which is just one of nearly 1,000 items included in the bundle!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' Kevin kicks things off with a bit of a 'sequel' to the previous SIFTC episode — first digging into latest release from Sokpop Collective, before trying his best to maintain a reasonable level of hype for the next game coming down the PUNKCAKE Délicieux pipeline! Finally, he gives a quick shoutout to Monolith, which was recently gifted to us by our pal Mark — the very first listener to ever reach out to us when we first started the podcast — as soon as he heard we had never played it in the Discord. Thanks again Mark! :D After that, Join join in on the fun as we chat about everything from Kevin's surprising level of moving progress, messing around with synthesizers and PICO-8, and even the short-lived blog that Randall & Kevin started up many moons ago...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' This week, Kevin kicks things off with an update on the latest games that the folks at PUNKCAKE Délicieux have been continuing to crank out — including a spotlight to Shotgun King, their entry to Ludum Dare 50 — alongside a couple more quick shoutouts! Once we get into the chit chat, John kicks things off with some of his thoughts on the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kevin digs a little deeper into Unpacking, and much more...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It's our first episode of the new year, and we're kicking off 2021 with a boatload of games to talk about, so let's get started... DJ gets the ball rolling with a bunch of multiplayer gaming that he's been doing lately, starting off with a Killer Queen Black & Rocket League session that he had with Randall & John over the weekend, and wrapping up with some Apex Legends. It hasn't been all competitive gaming for DJ though, as he's also been playing some Mario's Super Picross. Kevin finally got around to booting up the PICO-8 fantasy console, which was included in the itchio Bundle for Racial Justice & Equality, and highlights a handful of the standouts he's played this week. From faux-retro to neo-retro, Randall finally got his hands on the Analogue Nt Mini Noir that he ordered back in February—the retro enthusiast's definitive HD NES experience! And he's super into it! John closes us out with a little comfort food, as he's been plowing through one of his all-time favorites, Tales of Symphonia, before moving onto a later entry in the series, Tales of Vesperia—and he's already well over 30 hours in...

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' This week, Kevin gets things started off with a few demos for some awesome upcoming retro-inspired indie platformers, all of which he fired up during some recent livestreams! After that, Randall & John join in on the fun, as we pick things up right where we left off with our discussion on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from last week's proper numbered episode...
