12 May 2022 | 'With Arms Wide Open' by Creed (w/ Markiplier) | 01:13:44
With Ahms Wahd O-PAHNN. Why would we ever want to punch up this beloved song about daddy issues?? Evan and Andrew interrogate YouTube legend Markiplier (Mark Fischbach) about his childhood connection to this sensitive but rockin' tune. Many groundbreaking ideas and questions come to the surface: How NOT to do your album art photoshop, Why does Scott Stapp sing like a muppet, How does Andrew have a certain musical Spidey Sense, Why did Scott Stapp fight another rock band and have an orgy with Kid Rock?
Guest: Markiplier
Walk-in music: 'Silence Kid' by Pavement; 'Spaceship Superstar' by Prism; 'Homeworld (The Ladder)' by Yes.

01 Sep 2022 | 'Everytime We Touch' by Cascada (w/ Annie Rauwerda aka Depths of Wikipedia) | 00:49:54
Evan and Andrew turn their gaze inward when Annie Rauwerda (Depths of Wikipedia) incisively declares that their entire podcast is built on a foundation of hating. Is it too late for Evan and Andrew to walk away from their office cooler of Haterade™️?? Or has Punch Up The Jam, and a career of reading YouTube comments hardened their hearts? The final boss of this challenge is Annie's confounding opinion that Cascada's 2007 hit "Everytime We Touch" is the "perfect song." As they fight this demon, they discover their inner hot librarian and write a punch up that would make any Wikipedia editor blush.
Guest: Annie Rauwerda aka Depths of Wikipedia.
Walk-in music: 'Let's Go Out' by Devon Sproule; 'Presumably Dead Arm' by Sidney Gish.

28 Apr 2022 | 'Levitating' by Dua Lipa (w/ Connor Ratliff) | 01:44:22
It's the hit of the century! It sounds like it's from the 1980s and the 2080s at the same time! Everyone and their pet alien loves this song, and that's why, to punch it up, we knew we had to enlist the help of Connor Ratliff, a legend in the podcastiverse for his dedication to dissecting utter minutiae. And Connor did not disappoint, at one point obsessing over the syllables in a single measure to the point that Evan yelled "YOU HAVE GASLIT YOURSELF!" Our intrepid astronauts veer across the Milky Way and discover connections from Dua Lipa's Levitating to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jon Ossoff, and beer-brewing Trappist monks.
Guest: Connor Ratliff
Walk-in music: 'I Drink Beer' by Dan Reeder; 'Got To Give It Up' by Marvin Gaye; 'Pumped Up Kicks' by Foster The People.

26 May 2022 | 'I Get Around' by The Beach Boys (w/ Tim Daniels) | 01:13:03
Evan's losing his mind and has Friend of the Pod and Beachboyologist Tim Daniels (The Complete Guide to Everything) in for triage. The Beach Boys: They got around in every way you’re thinking. In the fictional but sort of autobiographical world of this song there’s drag racing, hot promiscuous sex, bragging about fat stacks, and “cool head”, yikes. In the real world there was abuse, fights, drowning, beefing with other bands, not to mention the Manson family stuff. As the Beachies sang, Fun, Fun, FUN!
Guest: Tim Daniels
Walk-in music: 'Taboo' by Caterina Valente; 'Revolution Blues' by Neil Young.

16 Jun 2022 | 'Frontin' by Pharrell (w/ Negin Farsad) | 01:18:27
Pharrell originally pitched this song to Prince, and we can confidently say, we’re glad Prince said no! This song rules! Makes you think, maybe Prince should have said no to more things! Negin Farsad returns to the pod bringing some personal history with this Pharrell feat. Jay-Z classic, and frankly more personal history than we needed as she recounts some shocking schoolyard taunts. Evan spends way too much time talking about cupping melons in the grocery store, and eventually punches Frontin up to much applause.
Guest: Negin Farsad (Fake The Nation, Birdgirl)
Walk-in music: 'Rock Your Body' by Justin Timberlake; 'Boasty' by Wiley (Ft. Stefflon Don, Sean Paul, & Idris Elba)

17 Nov 2022 | 'You're Still The One' by Shania Twain (w/ Jiji Lee) | 01:09:18
Ever thought about how making a billion dollars would ruin your life? Maybe you pondered a lot of options (revolutionary coup, botched CoolSculpting, basic bitch drug cartel kidnapping), but you MIGHT have missed an obvious one if you haven’t read all the People mag listicles about Shania Twain’s divorce-slash-husband-swap! Long story short, do NOT hire someone to be your best friend and then leave them alone in a palatial Swiss chalet with your superproducer husband while you go on tour. Evan, Andrew, and friend of the pod Jiji Lee discuss how Shania and Mutt Lange’s ballad remains the most perfect ballad of all time even after their gruesome divorce, and also how paradoxically it could be improved by leaning into Shania’s sheer fury over being spurned, with an added bonus of it being very hard to extradite criminals from Switzerland.
Guest: Jiji Lee

27 Oct 2022 | 'Replay' by Iyaz (w/ Phil Jamesson) | 01:06:02
Can a song be TOO catchy? Can a song be improved by making it WORSE, unlike what we do every other week, which is making every song better? Can a song be so good that it drags its singer into a black-holey whirlpool of one-hit-wonderdom? Well, the answer to all of these questions is YES, specifically because of Iyaz’s 2009 banger “Replay.” Evan, Andrew, & Phil Jamesson brainstorm ways to improve it simply by making it worse while also shop talking about YouTube, the Ocean State Job Lot, Waldenbooks, and whether pirating Independence Day could land you in jail.
Guest: Phil Jamesson

21 Apr 2022 | 'Manic Monday' by The Bangles | 01:06:47
MONDAYS AMIRITE???? Is the very controversial claim at the heart of this huge 80s hit from the Bangles. Evan and Andrew investigate whether Mondays are really persecuting The Bangles orrrrrr was this song perhaps written by an alien who had just learned about human jobs? No, in fact, it was written by Prince, and this episode reveals that he plagiarized one of his own @%#$ songs when phoning in the writing of this overgrown nursery rhyme. DJs and producers, don’t miss the absolutely sick sample pack of snares that Evan drops at 17:45, completely manic. Historians, don’t miss Andrew’s insights about Mike Myers, Fun Days, and Sex Shooters.
This week’s punch up is exTREMEly useful in your everyday life and if it had its own title other than “Manic Monday Punch Up” it would be “The Consequences Of My Actions” -- get this song and other punch ups on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/gregorybrothers and support the pod!

30 Dec 2021 | 'Feel Like Makin' Love' by Bad Company | 01:10:15
Punch Up The Jam moves out of the holiday spirit, and into the spirit of dry humping. Andrew and Evan examine who exactly "Feel Like Makin' Love" is for, other than the game Guitar Hero. Along the way, they wonder about Hooples, virgins, and the municipal benefits of tennis balls.

24 Mar 2022 | 'I Want It That Way' by Backstreet Boys (w/ Jack Douglass and Erin Breslin) | 01:02:17
You want it...that way? WHAT WAY?!? Evan and Andrew are joined by Backstreet Boys' superfans Jack Douglass and Erin Breslin to get to the bottom of WHAT WAY the Backstreet Boys so desperately wanted, while also wanting so desperately for their fire, their one desire, to NOT also want even as they were wanting it. Wow. Along the way, our gang also discusses the songs most entangled by their relationships with direct objects, the Susquehanna River, and the crimes of Lou Pearlman.
Walk-in Music: 'Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me For Me)' by Blessid Union of Souls; 'Graduation' by Vitamin C.

13 Oct 2022 | 'Young Americans' by David Bowie (w/ Julian Shapiro-Barnum) | 01:14:55
Grudgingly yet proudly acknowledging their middle-aged-ness, Evan and Andrew call in a ringer to shed some light on what the hell David Bowie is imagining when he thinks of Young Americans. Pimps? Hustlers? Richard Nixon?!? Had this guy even BEEN to America?!? Along the way, our hosts reminisce about their viral collaboration “It’s Corn,” Bruce Springsteen plagiarism, whether cocaine can make you a fascist*, and, for no discernible reason, revisit Andrew’s worst opinion.
*yes.
Guest: Julian Shapiro-Barnum of Recess Therapy.

31 Mar 2022 | 'Como Me Quieres' by Khruangbin | 01:05:58
Khruangbin: indie darlings that combine world music with vintage soul, all while making you feel like you stumbled into one of those Chill Beats Study Music For A Rainy Day playlists. Incredible music with one HUGE problem that results in a....punch up that is serious? That probably should win a Grammy? For those keeping score at home, Evan thinks he's gonna get away with not having to lose at trivia, but Andrew spontaneously springs one on him during this week's corrections round-up.

22 Sep 2022 | 'Octopus's Garden' by The Beatles (w/ Reilly Anspaugh) | 01:21:49
🎶I'd like to be🎶....punching up a song from the Fab Four! A scary prospect! And that's even before you get the tentacles involved. Obviously fans of the pod have been begging for a Beatles punch up for ages and we've just been too intimidated until now, tiptoeing through Lennon & McCartney solo work as prelude. But today WE'VE DONE IT. With the intrepid help of Beatlemaniac and Professional Reviewer Reilly Anspaugh, we got to the bottom of this song and the bottom of the ocean. Extensive non-maritime sidebars on cave geology, Evan's all-too-brief marimba career, and things a squirrel can do to a hollow log.
Guest: Reilly Anspaugh of Headgum's Review Revue.
Walk-in music: ‘Act Naturally' by Buck Owens; SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song; 'Honky Cat' by Elton John.

22 Dec 2022 | Y.M.C.A. by Village People | 01:25:55
Y.M.C.A....an absolutely loony song. Yet also a generational anthem. And also, a red herring, because this episode is not actually about Y.M.C.A. This episode is actually about a shocking reveal that will change the future of this podcast and possibly the world. Goodbye, for now.

14 Apr 2022 | 'The Reason' by Hoobastank (w/ Mano Agapion) | 01:15:49
“I’m not a perfect person,” begins this very imperfect song by perfectly named Hoobastank. NO DURR. Mano Agapion (Drag Her, Podcast Killed The Video Star) absolutely hoobed in with some stanky insights, and we can now call this song what it is: abuse. Even more shocking discoveries are made about the SoCal ska scene, Ross from Friends, and Biff from Back to the Future. Andrew brings an eye-opening punch up to the show that changes everything. And the reason is…..you.
Guest: Mano Agapion

I’m beggin, beggin you, to listen to this tale of how evil bond-style supervillains are conspiring to take over society with This One New Sound that is actually old and grates on your ears. Daniel Thrasher stops into the pod before going out on tour to share the reason he hates this Måneskin song (apparently it’s a C#). 17 Mar 2022 | 'Sexy Bitch' by David Guetta ft. Akon (w/ Justin Richmond) | 01:16:06
You know that feeling when you wanna say something really respectful, that recognizes someone’s personhood and beauty both inner and outer? Akon had that feeling, and it ended badly. Andrew and Evan bring in Actual Music Podcaster Justin Richmond to help figure out this completely insane song, and on their journey they find similarities to Point Break, suspiciously strong similarities to this one 80s hit, and similarities to how your history paper turns out when you try to do it all in one night.

10 Feb 2022 | 'I Won't Back Down' by Tom Petty (w/ Kristen Bartlett and Jason Gore) | 01:20:15
Just what was it that made Tom Petty so afraid that he had to shout from the rooftops, “I Won’t Back Down??” Well, we got into it, and okay, it’s pretty bad. It’s a real heartbreaker. But a butterfly flaps its wings over an intentionally set house fire in Los Angeles, and 30 years later, it brought us together with Kristen Bartlett (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) and Jason Gore (The Best Show) to deliver a punch that is so shocking it may have converted this show into a True Crime pod??

14 Jul 2022 | 'We Built This City' by Starship | 01:02:25
This song was slandered as “The Worst Song of the 80s”. Why?? It rocks! But as Andrew and Evan get way way into, it also sucks in unique and exciting and dumb ways. An absolutely devastating ep, with crucial insights into: what is hoopla; pre-boomer boomer attitudes, why you always go back to the mamba, calling in favors at MTV, and what is the difference between the professional French farter Le Petomaine and Marcel Proust.

Andrew comes to the pod this week with a barnyard axe to grind: Why ain’t there country music for them northerners? Down On The Farm by Tim McGraw proves the PERfect vessel for his punch up which turns out inventing an entirely new subgenre of music!! Evan is both aghast and delighted. Dana Schwartz (Anatomy: A Love Story; Noble Blood) saves the day as official Rhode Island Consultant, and together they figure out a lot about Quahogs, casual country sexism, wine scrotums, and Hollywood nepotism.

06 Oct 2022 | 'Goodbye Earl' by The Chicks | 01:08:12
A red-eye flight?!?! FROM Atlanta?!?! Well those travel...EAST! Evan & Andrew wax philosophical about why The Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" demonstrably takes place in France, whether they love music too much or hate music too much, and the dumbest arguments they've ever had about songwriting during their last audio-only episode before Punch Up The Jam's big move to audio AND video next week! Andrew calls his shot early for the Punch Up and performs our intrepid hosts' first ever LIVE Punch Up. Along the way they blaze through some corrections and look back at the most romantic moment ever inspired by Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums List.
Starting next Thursday, 10/13, you'll be able to tune into Punch Up The Jam video episodes (in addition to audio) via The Gregory Brothers YouTube channel!
Walk-in music: ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone' by The Temptations; 'Waterfalls' by Paul McCartney.

25 Aug 2022 | 'Thinking Out Loud' by Ed Sheeran | 01:11:25
You want romance? How about a list of geriatric ailments? Oh, swoon! Yep, this song is probably the front runner for "most played as a wedding first dance", and it's in serious need of a punch up. Evan & Andrew, first of all, solve the mystery of 17 vs 70, and then go on to break open a series of other earth-shaking quandaries like, Does Ed Sheeran know about smizing? Did James Blunt prevent WWIII? And what do Marvin Gaye and Marilyn Manson have to do with this treacly ballad?

03 Feb 2022 | 'Brass Monkey' by Beastie Boys (w/ Amir Blumenfeld) | 01:16:02
The wheels are flying off the car as guest Amir Blumenfeld invites *himself* into the punch like an 80s bully crashing the party, where all the nerds are just trying to have a good time drinking Brass Monkey. Hoo boy, Evan and Andrew try to make nice but it gets TENSE. Plus we discover that the song 'Brass Monkey' is so problematic that the Beastie Boys later disowned it.
Walk in songs:
'2021' - Vampire Weekend
'Bank Account' (short song) - Louis Cole
'Crazy in Love' - Beyoncé ft. Jay-Z

03 Nov 2022 | 'Eye of The Tiger' by Survivor (w/ Arthur Meyer) | 01:22:40
Is it rude to name your band after an event in which your friends and colleagues died? Is it rude to fire your lead singer immediately after he shreds his vocal chords singing the biggest hit of the 1980s? Well, apparently you don't care about this sort of stuff if you're a true SURVIVOR, because you've got THE EYE OF THE TIGER! Evan and Andrew welcome back Arthur Meyer to Punch Up The Jam, who comes ready not only with a pitch-ready idea for the punch up, but with the dumbest yet most impressive party trick that Evan and Andrew have ever seen! But our intrepid hosts have an ace up their sleeve to shock their guest before the Punch is truly Punched!
Guest: Arthur Meyer

13 Jan 2022 | 'Gasolina' by Daddy Yankee (w/ Joanna Hausmann) | 01:14:13
Against all odds, Evan and Andrew punch up a song not in their mother tongue. Along the way, they discover that Daddy Yankee's reggaeton anthem 'Gasolina' may not be about road trips, discover that Daddy Yankee may not have actually been about to play for the Seattle Mariners when he was shot by a stray bullet, and discover it's not just English Majors who love to talk about horny metaphors.

30 Jun 2022 | 'Imagine' by John Lennon (w/ Arthur Meyer) | 01:19:37
Imagine a world that is in every possible respect different from our own. Yeah, just give it a whirl. It's easy if you TRY. ...So says history's biggest imagination bully, John Lennon. We rip off the uplifting latex face mask of this song and bare the dark soul within: this song thinks it's better than you. Our very very prepared guest Arthur Meyer (The Tonight Show, The Onion) has some extremely helpful punch-up suggestions, and helps us roam through discussions of global resource scarcity, Russell Crowe, and the top-secret-but-real Clearchannel "Do Not Play" List!
Guest: Arthur Meyer (here's his album of Beatles covers)
Walk-in music: 'Planets' by Joseph; 'Monkberry Moon Delight' by Linda McCartney and Paul McCartney; 'Another Night' by M.C. Sar and Real McCoy.
NOTE: This ep was recorded before Andrew went on paternity leave. Nice to hear his familiar voice though. Instead of just imagining it. Which is easy, if you try.
"Wipe that smirk off your face!"

05 May 2022 | 'Dust in the Wind' by Kansas | 01:04:34
All we are is dust in the wind, dude. This crucial insight has been blowing the minds of rock fans for decades. Dust. Wind. Think about it man!! Andrew & Evan get into the nitty-gritty on this classic hit and are shocked, shocked to discover that the band Kansas is actually from Kansas!! And somehow this song is the first thing the singer ever learned to play on the guitar?? They get in a fight about Evan's soundboard abuse, but make up by the end of the episode to make a Very Special Announcement about hosting the podcast.

20 Jan 2022 | 'Deja Vu' by Olivia Rodrigo (w/ Tim Daniels and Tom Reynolds) | 01:17:33
In a rare and dangerous maneuver, Evan and Andrew decide to punch up a chart-topper so recent that they could topple from its vertiginous heights. Unfortunately after listening to 'Deja Vu' dozens of times, they still cannot parse the references to a little known indie rock band named Billy Joel. To rescue the punch, they called in expert witnesses Tim and Tom from The Complete Guide to Everything podcast. Thankfully, they know about everything. Resulting in probably the best punch up of 2022. So far.

15 Dec 2022 | 'Sugar' by Maroon 5 (w/ Ena Da) | 01:18:07
Evan & Andrew are joined by Ena Da to discuss the detestable but also detestably catchy song Sugar. There are just so many problems. Not least, how do we understand "sugar" and "red velvet" in light of recent illuminations of Adam Levine's idea of romance? More fundamentally, is Maroon 5 even still a band? Or just five guys cosplaying as a rock band while they sing along to Mike Posner studio tracks? And why are they giving themselves out as wedding presents to unsuspecting Los Angelenos?

06 Jan 2022 | 'Because of You' by Kelly Clarkson (w/ Akilah Hughes) | 01:27:54
Because a butterfly flapped its wings in Kamchatka, global wind patterns shifted, causing the accursed demon Simon Cowell to arise, which backfired for the agents of hell when his reign led to the ascent of the verified seraphim Kelly Clarkson, because of which we now have the song "Because Of You." Evan and Andrew are joined by old friend Akilah Hughes to unpack the many causal relationships in this tragic tune.

21 Jul 2022 | 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua (w/ Sammy Smart & Emily Gonzalez of Too Scary; Didn't Watch) | 01:23:34
Is this song a fun romp or barbaric atrocity? Evan enlists horror movie experts Sammy Smart and Emily Gonzales (Too Scary; Didn't Watch) to dissect and dismember this terrifying and insane dance hit. Diversions include: trademark lawsuits in which the judge gets very cheeky, haircuts shaped like eyebrows, and the mullet of pants.
Guest: Sammy Smart & Emily Gonzalez of Too Scary; Didn't Watch.

15 Sep 2022 | 'Shine' by Collective Soul | 01:15:09
duh nunu nununu nununu nunu nuh YEAH it's a new ep about this 90s classic! 'Shine' by Collective Soul was a huge hit, but it was only a demo! Don't give up on your dreams kids! Andrew & Evan unearth some surprising arcana about this band's success, but not before they get in some corrections about nudity, review this song's covers by Smashing Pumpkins and Dolly Parton, and imagining fictional covers by Paula Abdul and Bel Biv DeVoe. Andrew gets so sad and self-reflective he threatens to stare into the sunset and damage his retinas! Then Andrew turns it around, rediscovers joy, and punches up the song in a twisted way.

19 May 2022 | 'Bring Me To Life' by Evanescence (w/ Michael Gregory) | 01:14:35
The song that launched a million emo kids! Have you ever felt like you can’t wake up? Did you try having a random dude yell CANT WAKE UP at you? Evan, set adrift as a solo host, sorely missing his cohost Andrew (who’s on paternity leave), pulls in the next best thing, his other brother Michael, who proceeds to hit a home run with a stunning GUEST PUNCH. This episode gets to the bottom of what Bring Me To Life is really about: no it’s not the clown from It, but he does come up for some goth reason.
Guest: Michael Gregory
Walk-in music: a surprise REVERSE PUNCH they said it couldn't be done!!

08 Dec 2022 | 'One Headlight' by The Wallflowers | 01:11:04
Nepotism babies are so hot right now! But have they…always been?!? Evan & Andrew discuss the hottest nepotism baby of the 90s outside of Socks Clinton, Evan desperately and fruitlessly attempts to get Andrew to stop talking about Bob Dylan and start talking about ̶J̶a̶k̶o̶b̶ ̶D̶y̶l̶a̶n̶ The Wallflowers instead. But the sonorous tones of the organ on ‘One Headlight’ keeps drawing Andrew back to Dylan the elder like moth to a flame. Andrew resorts to the only revenge available to him in this format, which is the most brutal $5 segment that has ever been recorded on our podcast.

08 Sep 2022 | 'The Lazy Song' by Bruno Mars (w/ Shelby Wolstein and EJ Marcus) | 01:28:08
Andrew & Evan get scientific help from Shelby and EJ to philosophically probe Bruno Mars’ “Lazy Song,” asking: if you have the laziest day in the history of days, didn’t that, well, probably require some great amount of planning and effort on that part? And don’t you get additional marks off if you even thought about doing P90X, or any other thing from the year 2011?
Guests: Shelby Wolstein and EJ Marcus of Keeping Records podcast.

20 Oct 2022 | 'Lovely Day' by Bill Withers (w/ Michael Gregory) | 01:21:10
Andrew, Evan, and nearly genetically identical guest Michael, discuss a dimension of our multiverse in which Bill Withers became a billionaire by having all his songs recorded by Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson instead of singing them himself. But then they come to the immediate conclusion that that alternate universe is an entirely worse place for it, because we don’t have the privilege of hearing Bill Withers’ beautiful everyman voice, and also being a billionaire doesn’t even make Bill happy. The brothers compete to see which one of them is closest to breaking the current world record for singing the longest note, argue about how out of tune ‘Lovely Day’ is, and after Michael surprises our hosts with a surprise bonus Punch Up, laugh until they cry.
Guest: Michael Gregory.

29 Sep 2022 | 'Rude' by MAGIC! (w/ Wolves of Glendale) | 01:10:54
If you learn one thing from this song, it's that when anything goes wrong in your life, you simply must accuse others of being rude. How RUDE! You asked me to put a shirt on in the DMV?? Rude!! This is a huge hit that is completely upside down in its assessment of who exactly is being rude. Evan & Andrew are assisted in uprighting this song by prominent manners experts and comedy band The Wolves Of Glendale. An unassailable punch up is delivered. Important side discussions on the bad movie Hider In The House, Sebastian the Crab, and the Dixie Chicks air travel.
Guests: Tom McGovern, Ethan Edenburg, and Eric "Juicy for Busey" Jackowitz of Wolves of Glendale.

How long is it? Every single kid knows exactly how many days are left until Christmas, every harried mom and dad knows how few shopping days are left until the 25th, yet Adam Duritz and The Counting Crows are out here acting like Einsteinian physics applies to the Gregorian Calendar. Can our intrepid and unabashedly festive hosts take the most heartbreaking song in the advent oeuvre and turn it into something that will go on your family's Christmas Eve playlist? Seems impossible!

Evan is joined by Rachel Green and Kirsten O’Brien of Boss Bitches to settle the question at the heart of most modern utilitarian philosophy: If a song is the perfect song for Zumba, can it also be a terrible song? Andrew & Evan are joined by Jon Gabrus (Corked, Action Boyz, 101 Places to Party Before You Die) to break it down and punch it up. ALSO, I FACT-CHECKED MYSELF on the "key changes" we reference throughout the episode and found this incredibly insightful comment from reddit user "willylumplumps"
"It looks like his main device in "Kiss From a Rose" is to blend the keys of G mixolydian (key of C) and Gminor.
So for example, the intro is Gmin, F, G. This has a mysterious sound because the first two chords sort of establish the key as Gmin or Bb while the G major sort of surprises us and snaps us back to key of C.
The verses and choruses are G mixolydian which is really just the key of C starting on the 5 chord. He's starts using the borrowed chord flat 3 (Eb).
One last sneaky thing he does is that he never goes to the tonic until the bridge which gives the bridge a really triumphant quality because our brains and ears haven't heard home until this point. And then he drops a freakin' flat 6 chord on us just because he can"

Again, really wish I could apologize for the abbreviation of "studio" and even moreso for the umlaut but it is physically and emotionally impossible at this time.
