I began my career as a broadcast journalist and I am fortunate to work with the commercial radio sector in Ireland as a digital trainer. I’ve seen the sector evolve over two decades and right now their role has never been more relevant.

In today’s show we are discussing how to build public trust and engagement in the Digital Age using the power of radio

81% of people in Ireland listen to radio every day. This translates into 3.2 million weekday listeners.

More than half tune into their local or regional station and 43% listen to a national station. Among the younger, 15 to 34-year market, 71% listen daily.

There is no doubt that radio is a key partner for government and public sector agencies.

It’s a story of hope and hopelessness, but one filled with utter resilience and through social media this story is now being shared across Ireland and Ukraine, as Tetiana Pankiv uses social media for good.

Climate action, the cost-of-living crisis, food security, war, the great resignation, a looming recession, pandemics, divisive national politics - whatever your bad news, you’ve no choice but to communicate it. 

But how well you do it will be the difference between a sustained public backlash or general public buy-in. 

With the citizen expecting timely truths and demanding transparency in decision-making, the question I’m posing in this episode is, ‘are you a competent digital storyteller and a responsible guardian of the public interest?’ 

Bad news sucks. But bad news spreads faster than anything else online, and even if you’re not the author, you’ll have to at some stage take up your position as protagonist.

So, what’s it going to be?

The new world of work is something that everyone is discussing on work calls. But what are the advantages and disadvantages for communications and marketing professionals in public sector?

In a recent Gartner poll, 82% of company leaders said they plan to allow employees to work from home part of the time. But concerns over maintaining company culture put the priority at three days a week in the office each week while employees want three days at home.

Employers have to balance what will work best not just from their perspective. The pandemic introduced a sense of personalization for employees who want a say in what a hybrid work model looks like for them.

Remote work has been the go-to phrase of 2020 and most of 2021, but now that plenty of companies were forced into a fully remote model, there’s room for creativity in defining what their return to “normal” is. For some, fully remote presented more challenges than benefits.

They say technology is driving the current transformation of the jobs market, especially the coming of age of generative artificial intelligence.

The report is based on a unique survey of the world’s largest employers, relating to job trends and their own company directions from 2023-2027.

The report brings together the perspective of 803 companies collectively employing 11.3 million workers.

Joe Pullizi says that most creators give up after six months, when in fact it takes 9-15 months for your content marketing tribe to build and your content to convert.

This is not my first podcast outing. I hosted JSB Talks Digital for two and a half years before having a broadcasting hiatus.

My favourite annual research is out and it’s time to understand the ever-changing news landscape.

The 2022 Digital News Report compiled by Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford presents an interesting evolution of news consumption online.

This year’s report looks at the progress on pay models and the popularity of curated editorial products like podcasts and newsletters.

The YouGov survey of over 93,000 online news consumers in 46 markets covers half of the world's population. So it’s worth reading. But I’ve read it so you don’t have to!

The report documents ways in which the connection between journalism and the public may be fraying, including a fall in trust following last year’s positive bump, a declining interest in news and a rise in news avoidance. It also looks at audience polarisation and explores how young people access news.

Every year I look forward to the publication of the Digital News Report, a study of how news is evolving in the Digital Age. It’s a global study of over 92,000 online news consumers in 46 countries conducted by Reuters Institute and University of Oxford. 

This year’s study is shaped by the pandemic and how COVID-19 changed the news consumption habits of citizens across the world. But what does this mean for public sector marketing pros and how you engage with media and the public?
