21 Aug 2020Episode 8: Dr. Joan Ifland01:14:13

Welcome to Protecting Your Nest. Joining the show today is  processed food addiction specialist, Dr. Joan Ifland. Dr. Ifland has broken a lot of ground in the realm of food addiction—having released a number of influential books and studies—and she is currently working on evidence-based training for healthcare professionals. Dr. Ifland is a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and earned her PhD in Addictive Nutrition at Union Institute and University. She created Addiction Reset, an online resource and community for people struggling with food addiction and has created a number of other free online resources. Please see the links below for more details.

In this episode, Dr. Ifland brings to light the shady reality of what goes on behind the scenes in the marketing departments of big food companies in the United States. Additionally, she walks us through her doctoral work which validated the alcoholism diagnostic criteria for over-eating. What is going on in a person’s brain that causes them to become addicted to processed food and how are marketing professionals at big food companies taking advantage of it? Why does it seem like will-power doesn’t ever win the battle against addiction and craving? How does one begin to effectively reverse processed food addiction and start moving in a healthy direction? Dr. Ifland negotiates these questions in great detail and with astounding expertise.

Food addiction is not an eating problem. It is a substance use problem. There are addictive substances in foods produced by food companies that are causing people to become addicted to it.

28 Aug 2020Episode 9: Vinnie Tortorich01:05:54

Welcome to Protecting Your Nest. Joining the show today is the legendary fitness trainer, model, motivational speaker, author, and film maker, Vinnie Tortorich. Vinnie has been working out in the gym since the age of 8, was a star athlete in high school, and has had a long career helping regular people as well as movie stars get fit and healthy.

Today’s episode focuses particularly on the ‘E’ aspect of the ‘NEST’ acronym. It may be surprising for some listeners to hear a fitness trainer say that exercise is the least important aspect of both the ‘NEST’ and the ‘ROPE’ for weight-loss, but Vinnie believes just that. That being said, the discussion in this episode centers around the many other benefits of exercise and how exercise can work in conjunction with the other aspects of ‘NEST’ and ROPE.’

Topics covered in this discussion include the benefits of weight-bearing exercise for bone strength, the necessity of including recovery time as a part of your exercise routine, the relationship between exercise, sleep, and stress, the relationship between aerobic exercise and heart health, and more.

“Use it or lose it” is the main piece of wisdom to take away from this episode. Also, “No Sugar, No Grains!”

Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist, a legendary and influential figure in the low carb world, and a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and metabolic disease. He is also a best-selling author of several books and is the co-founder of the Intensive Dietary Management Program.

Welcome to Protecting Your Nest. Amy Berger, MS, CNS, is a U.S. Air Force veteran and Certified Nutrition Specialist who specializes in helping people do “Keto Without the Crazy.”™ She has a master’s degree in human nutrition and writes about a wide range of health and nutrition-related topics, such as insulin, metabolism, weight loss, diabetes, thyroid function, and more. Alzheimer’s and dementia are the topics of discussion in this episode. The root cause of many chronic diseases can be traced back to metabolic syndrome. This is why Dr. Berger has the idea to use keto/low-carb as a dietary intervention for people struggling with diseases of the brain or as a preventative measure to reduce the possibility of having these diseases in the future.

How many patients with chronic diseases and other medical conditions could be helped with a change to the keto or low-carb diet? Dr. Berger thinks there are a lot. Dietary intervention can have very powerful effects—especially in our current food climate of processed foods and sugar.

03 Feb 2023Episodio de Podcast 136: Sí se puede revertir la diabetes con la Maria Grangeno00:56:30

Bienvenides al podcast Protegiendo tu Nido! Protecting your Nest! Hola!

09 Jun 2023Episode 154: Using Functional Lab Testing with Reed Davis01:09:15

Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Reed Davis, Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT), is an expert in functional lab testing and holistic lifestyle medicine. Over 20 years ago, Reed Davis recognized people were caught in a “cycle of trial and error” and he committed to being the last person they needed to see. While working with top leaders in alternative medicine, he ran thousands of labs on thousands of people and learned to identify “healing opportunities.” Using all-natural, drug-free protocols, Reed made observations about who got better and who didn’t, codifying which “general principles of health building” would outperform “specific treatments” being provided by standard and even alternative medicine. And through this work, he then developed the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Certification Course and D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success Protocol® to educate and empower as many people as possible about how to get well and stay well naturally, so they, in turn, may empower others to do the same.

In this discussion, Dr. Tony and Reed talk about:

  • (05:10) Reed’s previous career as an environmental paralegal and his career shift to functional medicine
  • (11:34) Conventional medicine versus functional
  • (15:04) The “Sounds like” method
  • (16:45) Why it is so important to treat the patient in front of you holistically
  • (19:43) How to help a patient figure out what kind of test they need to get
  • (24:30) What Reed’s platform (FDN) teaches laypeople and clinicians about testing and metabolic health
  • (31:04) Why we need to be mindful not to inadvertently let toxins into our bodies
  • (37:59) Why sufficient sleep is crucial for health
  • (43:20) Why you should not let stress build up unaddressed
  • (49:27) Bio-individuality
  • (53:23) The resources offered on Reed’s website, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition
