17 Aug 2021NATHAN YOUNG: The Cost Of Deaf Swimming In The UK00:28:30

On this weeks episode of the Propulsion Swimming Podcast, we speak to GB deaf swimmer, Nathan Young about the lack of funding the UK government gives to help him on his journey to become a Deaflympic Champion.

After the huge success of British Swimming at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the UK government has now given more funding towards Olympic and Paralympic Sport in the lead up to the Paris 2024 Games. Sadly for our guest Nathan, even though he is one of the top deaf swimmers in the world, he won't get any part of that funding at all.

We also talk about his current campaign of trying to build up exposure of GB deaf swimming, how he thinks that the Deaflympics should be on a level playing field with the Olympics and Paralympics, and what it's like being a swimmer living with the disability of having your hearing impaired.

04 Mar 2021Can We Stop Swimmers Dropping Out Of The Sport?00:41:00

Addressing the Dropout in Swimming

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we discuss and address the reasons that many teenagers leave the sport when in reality their swimming journey has just begun!

There are so many reasons that kids drop out of swimming. It could be a change in interests, clashes with a coach, burnout, job opportunities, and many more. For me, I struggled to understand with a lack of improvement in the pool and why my times all of a sudden stopped falling. It was never explained to me that when I hit 16/17 that my body may have stopped changing and PB's were going to be a lot harder to come by. This combined with a clash in training style with my coach meant I turned my focus quickly towards study and academia.

I clearly love the sport of swimming, that never went, I now co-run a successful swimming YouTube, so are there any adjustments that could have happened during my journey through the sport that meant I didn't leave the pool so soon?

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we take a deep dive into how we can stop kids from dropping out of the sport, which is especially important given this prolonged period out of the water. Does swimming in the UK have a fundamental issue with times being the gold standard and not enjoyment? And if there is an adjustment towards enjoying racing, winning, and points competitions - like many competitions are across the pond - would we see more swimmers stay racing for a longer time?

If you only listen to one of our podcasts this year, please make it this one. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic!!

14 Oct 2021ERIN ROBERTSON: Lessons of Age Group Burnout00:46:47

This week on the Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are joined by Erin Robertson.

At age 16 Erin was Commonwealth Youth Champion and an age group record holder. However just 14 months later she was left feeling like a complete and utter failure, and as if she had let down every last person who had ever supported her. Because of those feelings, she left the sport.

That was roughly 5/6 years ago and since then, she has returned to competitive swimming and has a newfound love for the sport again.

We wanted to speak to Erin on this week's episode to discuss what lessons can be taken away from her journey through the sport, especially as an age group swimmer. Whether that be her USRPT training, racing at national championships at an age as young as 12, and how the pressure put on her by the media affected her mental health.

We hope that others can improve their own journey through the sport by listening to this conversation and know if you step away from the sport of swimming, the enjoyment can come back, just like it has for Erin!

This week on the Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are joined by Swim England CEO, Jane Nickerson MBE to help us answer all of your questions about how the current Energy Crisis and Cost of Living increase is going to affect swimming and the leisure industry in the UK.

We ask Jane why it's so important the Government helps fund the energy bills Leisure Centres are currently facing, and how everyone can best support the #SaveOurPools campaign!

Please use the linked templates to write to your local MPs, making as much noise about why your leisure center needs to stay open for you!!

We discuss how swimmers should now be aiming to correct their technique and avoiding injury rather than quickly aiming to get back into competitive swimming shape and fitness.

21 Mar 2024E191: Jono Adam: Preparing for British Trials in Australia00:30:09

Jonathan 'Jono' Adam, is a Bath Performance Centre swimmer as well as a double LEN Under 23 Champion. At the 2024 British Swimming Championships, he will be heading into the 100m Backstroke as the second-fastest seed. He's set to be one of the many hopefuls looking to make the British Swimming Olympic team in the 100m Back and go beneath the all-important Nomination Standard of 53.68In an interview on the Propulsion Swimming Podcast, Jono shares why his preparations heading into Olympic Trials have built confidence in a potential 52-point second swim, and moreover, what it's like being teammates and even housemates with some of his biggest competition.Key topics Jono discusses on the podcast:🇦🇺 Firstly, what was the main focus was on the recent Bath PC Training Camp in Australia.💪 Training against Kaylee McKeown, in addition to his hardest set while down under.🏁 Why he hasn't had many in-season swims, and then why his confidence comes from a complete training block instead. ⭐ Where did his personal best swim at LEN U23's come from (53.45), and more importantly what tactics he will use to replicate and improve upon it. 🧑‍🍳 How understanding skinfolds and his nutritional input out of the pool has led to improved performances in the pool.🇬🇧 Lastly, why it's important he's focusing on his own swim and not those of swimmers around him, like the ever-impressive Ollie Morgan.

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast, we talk through their chances at the meet and why we are excited after their British Champs 2024 performances.
