27 Jul 2021Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - A Discussion with Michele Shelton01:22:18

The last several years have brought a lot of things to the forefront of society in the present day. Racial justice, equity, and inclusion are now things we talk about with increasing frequency. Here at the Profitable Performance Marketing podcast we get to cover issues that are important to us and that relate to the digital marketing space. Today we get to do that and so much more.

My guest today is Michele Shelton. Michele is the CEO and principal consultant of Shelton Holdings LLC. You can find her and everything about her agency at www.micheleshelton.com. For more than 20 years, Michele has held leadership roles providing oversight to equal opportunity and diversity efforts as a city and state government official, corporate executive, and nonprofit program manager of workforce development initiatives launched and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and National Urban League. She is a member of the National Speakers Association, Society for Human Resource Management, National Association for Female Executives, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, and Leadership Louisville. Michele has been featured in Who's Who Publications, The Louisville Defender, Courier-Journal, Today's Woman magazine, as well as on podcasts, radio and television. In 2020 Michele received recognition as a Top 100 Diversity Trailblazer for her work, and she continues to make an impact serving on boards that advance equal opportunity and equity in education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

I met Michele through a coaching group that I'm currently a member of and have been for several years. Michele focuses on helping organizations construct and execute diversity equity and inclusion programs. It's not something that's discussed a lot within our industry and I'd like to change that. Race, equality, and inclusion definitely have a role in our discussion around all things digital marketing. So today Michele and I dive right into what DEI is, why it's important, and what we can do about it. I am so excited to count her as a friend, mentor, and colleague and I think you're going to learn a ton from today's episode.

JEBCommerce created its DEI statement earlier this year and is working to make the organization a safe place for all people. Michele has been an important resource to help us get there. We're not done yet but we're making strides that I hope you begin to make as well. If you'd like to get a hold of Michele you can go to her website, www.micheleshelton.com and follow her on LinkedIn.

08 Jun 2022Affiliate Marketing, Leadership, and a Commodore 64 with Richard Dennys01:03:53

Today's conversation is with Richard Denny's, CEO of Webgains. I learned that Richard and I share a ton. From our first computers (both Commodores) to hours spent coding very simple programs in basic, to our desire to lift people up through education and training.

I think Richard's bio on LinkedIn says it all "Still a proud owner of a Sinclair ZX81 and Spectrum, used to copy out pages of BASIC code for RPGs from magazines into my Commodore 64 in the 1980s, went to University, taught myself HTML and started one of the world's largest websites in the 1990s, founded then folded an online travel start-up (before that was a word) in the 2000s, helped to accelerate other start-ups and teach start-up founders in the 2010s and now in the 2020s proudly run Webgains.

Work Hard; Be Kind; Have Fun. That's it really."

We discussed a broad range of topics, including:

  • His origin story into affiliate marketing

  • Nerding out on data

  • The impact of investment in affiliate marketing

  • Changes in the affiliate channel

  • The change he saw that led him to embrace the channel after previously rejecting it

  • Big Media and Affiliate Marketing

  • Leading through turbulence and the 3 Horizons

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and there really is something for everyone here.

If you'd like to find more about Webgains, check out their website. To contact Richard, follow him on LinkedIn.

Thank you Richard!

11 Jan 2021Working with a Trademark Plus Affiliate - A conversation with Chelseah Murphy of Wickfire.01:04:54

On today’s episode, I have a conversation with Chelseah Murphy, Business Development Manager at Wickire. Wikfire is a data driven digital agency that focuses on SEM work for their clients.

I really enjoyed this conversation and I think you’ll find it extremely informative. You may know this affiliate best for their trademark+ SEM bidding, www.buyersguide.org or www.coupon.co website. But there is so much more that they do.

This episode is going to be impactful if you:

  • Allow affiliates to trademark plus bid in the search engines

  • Are 100% against this activity

  • Looking for cost effective ways to maximize your ROI through SEM campaigns

  • Would rather only pay for SEM that produces sales

  • Are looking to maximize your coupon results

  • Think affiliates do very little work that they should be compensated for (this may change your mind)

  • Want information on innovative affiliate partners

Wickfire does some amazing work in Trademark Plus, Product and Brand Review sites and Coupon area. I hope you find this podcast episode as informative as I did!

If you’d like to get in touch with Chelseah or Wickfire, email them at partners@wickfire.com or chelseah@wickfire.com

And don't forget, we put together a case study focused on controlling customer acquisition costs. This case study highlights the commission structure, technology utilization and promotional strategies we use for our clients’ affiliate programs to help them increase their overall revenue while reducing their cost of acquisition. It can be done, and we outline that in this case study. Go to www.jebcommerce.com/acquisitioncost to get your strategy today.

28 Sep 2022Build it and they won't come – Affiliate Marketingis hard00:15:44

One of the most common mistakes a brand can make with their affiliate channel is to create it and then expect it to start producing sales, grow over time, and achieve their goals without a ton of time, attention, expertise, and experimentation. Today our host, Jamie Birch, talks about why this isn't the case and outlines 4 steps to take now to increase revenue and find greater success in the channel.

17 Nov 2021Affiliate Marketing Strategies to Acquire New Customers00:16:31

The topic of new customer acquisition is both hot and a perennial favorite in our industry. The good news is that it’s possible (feasible, even) to get your brand in front of new buyers through the affiliate channel. As technology has caught up to the level of sophistication of our publisher partners, the paths to success in this area are now much clearer.

However, in order for it to work, you may need to evaluate the commission structure of your program, how you’re communicating with partners, and the information shared with them. In today’s episode, Jamie outlines why you should want to address these issues and some next steps. If your brand could use an infusion of new customers, this episode is a must-listen!

25 Jan 2021Todd Crawford - Long time industry vet and current Co-Founder Impact01:08:51

It isn’t often that you get a chance to have a conversation with someone that has been at the very beginning of our industry and was a catalyst at two of the most impactful technology solutions in our space over the last 20 years. Today I get to do just that. Today I speak with long time friend, industry vet and the very first employee at Commission Junction, Todd Crawford!

As I stated above, Todd was the very first employee at Commission Junction and since then has established himself as a thought leader in our space and helped launch one of the most innovative technology platforms in our space.

On this episode we discussed the “other” marketing channel, Partnerships. Todd did a great job of explaining the difference and need for partnerships and how Impact, his current venture, empowers this channel to scale.

If you are an affiliate marketer or an advertiser that needs to find new channels for growth, has been pushed to go beyond the known affiliates and couponers, or you are simply looking to jump start your idea creation, then this podcast is for you.

You can contact Todd at his linkedin, Impact’s linkedin and Impact’s blog.

22 Nov 2023The affiliate channel is complex, don't make this mistake with it00:15:51

In this episode Jamie Birch, the Founder of JEBCommerce and host of the podcast, takes a deep dive into a critical aspect of the affiliate marketing landscape: the realization that the affiliate channel isn't a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Instead, it's a multifaceted ecosystem of various channels under one overarching umbrella.

One of the most prevalent and potentially costly mistakes that digital marketers make – viewing the affiliate channel as a monolithic entity, rather than recognizing the myriad of distinct business models represented by affiliate publisher partners. The heart of the matter lies in understanding that you might have ten or even a hundred different approaches and strategies at play within your affiliate marketing efforts.

The key to avoiding this pitfall is to treat each affiliate partner individually, considering their unique strengths and objectives. Here's the game plan:

  1. Understand Them Individually: Get to know the strengths and capabilities of each affiliate partner. Recognize the role they play in your overall strategy.
  2. Evaluate Them Individually: Assess the performance of each partner based on their specific model and contribution to your goals.
  3. Optimize Them Individually: Tailor your strategies and efforts to optimize the results for each partner, taking into account their distinct business models.

By managing your affiliate program in this thoughtful and individualized manner, you'll unlock the potential for greater success at the top of the marketing funnel. Don't miss out on this episode, as it provides invaluable insights into a more effective and profitable approach to affiliate marketing.

13 Sep 2023What should my affiliate newsletter and overall communication cadence be?00:17:49
JEBCommerce Founder, Jamie Birch, takes a question from a prospective client: “What should my affiliate newsletter and overall communication cadence with my affiliates be?”Jamie discussed these points:
  • Don’t communicate too little
  • Don’t communicate too often
  • Only communicate with your affiliates when you have something impactful to say
  • If you don’t have anything impactful to say, find something impactful to say
  • No less than quarterly because of seasonality, but that really isn’t enough
  • Use both in network and outside network communication methods
  • Find the preferred communication mediums of your affiliates and focus on that
Give it a listen!

We noticed a trend occurring over a year ago with more PR professionals and agencies entering the affiliate marketing space. It's one of the reasons we set out to find someone with significant affiliate marketing AND PR chops to lead our Affiliate Marketing team. She also has significant experience in social marketing as well.

Oh, did we mention she won an Emmy for her marketing? It's true.

On today's episode we discuss the following topics:

  • The general merging ofAffiliate Marketing and PR, and how that impacts affiliates, PR professionals, and advertisers

  • How Affiliate Marketing and Public Relations are very similar in relationship building and pitching/recruiting publishers

  • How the advancing technology of the affiliate channel can help PR firms and professionals track way more than they have before and protect the top-of-funnel publishers and track outside of pixels

  • How affiliate marketing can increase the speed and reach of PR campaigns

  • How we need to change our KPIs to measure in this new world

You can reach out and follow Blagica on LinkedIn.

03 Nov 2021Don't Remove Dormant Affiliates From Your Program00:15:55

Thinking of removing all the affiliates that aren't producing clicks or sales in your affiliate program? DON'T! Jamie Birch, CEO and Founder of JEBCommerce, gives us a little rant on why this is a bad idea and may hurt the growth of your affiliate program.

Removing affiliates that aren't meeting your definition of active:

  • Isn't necessary

  • Saves nothing

  • Reduces potential for future sales from partners you don't even know yet

  • Shows a lack of understanding of the channel and how affiliates operate

  • Hurts relationship building, the core of affiliate marketing

  • Show there's too much value placed on the wrong KPIs

Listen in as Jamie goes into more detail on these points and others, including a story about one of hundreds of dormant affiliates becoming a "big dog" in the space.

24 Jan 2024EPC and How to Use it in the Affiliate Channel00:15:51

Today our host, Jamie Birch, discusses the metric EPC, or Earnings Per Click. He discusses what it is, how to calculate it, how and why affiliates use it, why you should use it as an advertiser, and how you can manage it effectively.

Here are two common EPC formulas:

  • earnings per 100 clicks - commissions paid / (clicks/100)
  • earnings per click - commissions paid / total clicks

A good rule of thumb is to know and calculate your 7 day, 30 day, and overall EPC, then track it over time.

Learn how you can manage EPC with tactics like general click management, optimization of high-click producers that do not convert, recruiting of high converting closers, and more.

Jamie mentioned a coupon case study during the episode. Most of the networks were involved and it gives you real data on the power (or lack thereof) of coupon publishers. Find it here: https://jebcommerce.com/lp/do-coupon-affiliates-drive-any-value/

04 May 2022Focus on Performance Over Categories00:12:11

This is our second host rant, you read that right. I am ranting today! Ok, not really so much, but today I'm talking about something that can truly drive me crazy. The idea that we should be removing or stop working with affiliates in our affiliate programs because of their type or our self imposed categorization. What we really should be talking about is their performance markers (KPIs), the audience we get access to, and the customers we are actually receiving from them.

Let's focus on the performance, the hard data, and not our feelings. We make better affiliate management decisions.

I talk about an affiliate marketing study we put together at jebcommerce.com/value, that aggregates hard core data from all the major networks and publishers. It addresses consumer behavior and the types of customers coupon sites are actually driving. You have some amazing data at your fingertips to make great decisions. Don't miss out on this one!

And hey, we are always looking for more guests. Email gethelp@jebcommerce.com if you or someone you know should be on our show!

09 Oct 2020Lisa Riolo - Co-Founder, Impact and Affiliate Marketing Leader01:24:54

Lisa Riolo is a 20 year vet of the industry and Co-Founder of the affiliate technology Platform - Impact. We had a great conversation that spanned my adaptation to a co-working facility, how we are both navigating our current social climate, leadership lessons (hint hint - curiosity, empathy and potential are touchstones for her and performance marketing and where it is going.

We often don’t get the opportunity to thank individuals who played pivotal roles in our career, and today I do, so don’t miss that.

You definitely want to stay till the end as we talk about where the industry is going, the rise of affiliates really recognizing and flexing their power and our focus on the customer’s buyer journey and how that fits in with the future.

You can find Lisa on Linkedin and visit Impact for your affiliate tracking needs.

In the intro I share about one of our services, Affiliate Program Strategy Roadmap. If you’d like to find out how you can leverage our decades of experience to create a strategy for growth in your affiliate program, check out our service here http://jebco.de/strategy .

Top Tips

Sales is about mindset. Lisa mentions that she often hears people say they don’t enjoy “sales.” She explains that we are all in a way selling something – selling to, retaining or interfacing with customers. Lisa says to think of sales as helping someone make the decision that’s right for him or her. It’s not about your agenda, it’s about their agenda. You are simply giving them information so they can make the best decision possible. It’s all about educating people, and this runs across every vertical.

Reminder: Affiliates are brands, too. Lisa discusses her work to balance the affiliate marketing ecosystem. Her focus is on creating a partnership framework and methodology, while remaining respectful to the fact that Impact is a technology platform, not a network. She also reminds us that affiliates are their own brands, too. Lisa believes that the industry has let the pendulum swing too far towards the brands’ needs, rather than the affiliates or publishers. A platform should be an ecosystem that allows everybody to be able to partner successfully. This especially goes for those that have never participated in the performance space until now (like CNN, Buzzfeed, etc.). Publishers are true brands on their own and they should be viewed as equal.

The consumer experience needs to become the focus. Lisa drives home that a focus on the consumer experience is where everyone must head in this industry. Reflecting on how you market, the touch points in the path to purchase and how to put the consumer first is important. Lisa emphasizes that we must think about the touch points of engagement while a customer is trying to decide to buy or participate. Are you adding value directly to the customer when they are engaged with your company? As they transition throughout the journey, is there enough consistency to build a partnership?

09 Mar 2021Tony Pantano - CEO, IMWave - Pandemic, Search and Affiliate Marketing01:14:53

One of my favorite things about the Profitable Performance Marketing podcast is that I get to sit down and talk with some of my favorite people in the industry, people I consider friends and have known for decades. Tony is one of those and he joins me today.

Tony Pantano is the CEO of IMWave. I've known Tony for over a decade and IMWave’s founder, Adeam Viener for two decades. Tony is a great guy, upstanding individual and the kinda civic leader that I wish I could say I was. Tony loves challenges, and we talk about one large one he’s taken on this year, that of School Board Member. The first few minutes we discuss his experience with the pandemic as a member of a school board in Pennsylvania. I think you’ll find the discussion enlightening. Great job Tony, and thank you for stepping up and stepping out to serve your community.

Then we dive into search and affiliate. Tony shares some big success stories and the difference between trademark plus and what IMWave does. Hint hint, they don’t do trademark plus search bidding.

If you are looking for a partner to augment your search budget, cooperatively help you and your search team drive new incremental sales through your affiliate channel, then you definitely want to listen.

We also talk about these misconceptions:

  • IMWave does trademark plus bidding

  • “My search program is hitting everything available”

  • You can’t have a search affiliate and a search term work together

  • A Search affiliate will cannibalize your current program

  • And more

If you want to reach out to Tony, you can email him at tonyATimwave.com

In the intro I share about one of our services, Affiliate Program Strategy Roadmap. If you’d like to find out how you can leverage our decades of experience to create a strategy for growth in your affiliate program, check out our service here http://jebco.de/strategy .

Dave is the founder of Brandverity, recently acquired by Partnerize. And he is a great human being, serial entrepreneur (my words not his), great father and husband and an Air-force vet. Thank you again for your service Dave!

Dave and my conversation runs the gamut from growing a company and growing a family, going through the acquisition process, leading a company through turbulence and the acquisition and the technology he developed to help the industry keep things clean and profitable at Brandverity. I think you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

13 Jul 2020Corey Michael van der Laan - Quit my job and traveled the world - an affiliate interview00:56:40

This is our first podcast in our travel series. With so much up in the air with COVID-19 and travel being hit so acutely and globally, I wanted to interview experts on all sides of the affiliate equation in this industry segment.

Cory is a vlogger and an affiliate of one of our travel clients, Contiki.com. And boy is his story amazing. Every time I get the opportunity to travel around the US and globally, all I can think of is quitting my job and traveling the world. How many of us have though of that?

Well, Corey has done it. A 400 day trip around the world on one Contiki trip after another. Unfortunately, COVID-19 cut it short at day 304.

Corey and I talk about his journey from employee to affiliate and all of his travels. We also dive into what he needs from an advertiser to be successful. We also talk about what he is doing now to continue to grow his audience and that of his advertisers while travel is challenging at best.

His video's are amazing, edited very well and will 100% guaranteed make you want to take a Contiki trip and get you seriously thinking about arranging your life to go travel for year!
