“I want you to command prices that are commensurate with the value you are bringing your clients.”
I see male consultants charging $300,000+ for an engagement, but I’ll see a woman consultant really struggle to say a number like $30,000 for similar work.
There are tons of reasons for that (which we’ll get into in this episode), but the bottom line is: I want you to charge what you want for your services. I want women consultants to ask for hundreds of thousands of dollars and get it. And you can. I know this because I’ve done it, and I help my clients do it, too.

“What if instead of 25 clients in a year, you had a base of 5 clients you worked with over the course of the whole year? And instead of $5,000 per client, it was $100,000 or $75,000? You would have the foundation of a business that would give you peace of mind.”
So many consultants come to me living in the land of one-offs. They might have 25 clients in a year, mainly doing one-time projects.
One-offs keep you on the Revenue Rollercoaster, and they don’t allow you to do your most impactful work. I too did one-offs for years when I first started, and what I saw was that the results my clients got wouldn’t stick. There just isn’t enough time in one-offs to get to the root cause issue and really solve it. I was missing out on the opportunity to make a bigger, more lasting impact, and to build a reputation for doing so.
I want you to say no to one-offs—and that takes courage. However, if you keep saying yes to what you don’t want, you’re just going to keep getting more and more of it. “Sometimes the most productive thing I can do is rest.” Every time I experience envy of another business owner doing something like working fewer hours or being a digital nomad in Bali, I remind myself: “You’re self-employed! “Mindset is actually the greatest determiner of success, far more than skills or talents.” If there is anyone who's done a 180 degree turn on mindset, from thinking it was total nonsense to thinking it's absolutely everything, it’s ME. I clearly remember the days I would think I don't have any limiting beliefs. Boy was I wrong. But the great news here is that it’s completely possible to change that. In fact, it’s imperative that you do. In my experience, mindset will get you further than skills or talents ever could. Mindset encompasses things like personal leadership and self-management, and your ability to get things done, resilience, belief in yourself, positivity, all kinds of things. In preparing for today's episode, I went through dozens of past episodes, out of the 200 total, that are dedicated purely to mindset – dozens. So it was hard for me to select just a few of them, but these are the ones that I felt were the most essential listening on this topic. We're going to cover self-sabotage, productivity tips, getting what you want and making yourself happy. We’ll dive into the hermit archetype and what that means for your work, and we’ll wrap it up with uncovering shame around money, and two revelations that came up in my 200th episode. How do we ask for help? Why is it so hard to do that? And how can we do so without destroying credibility, making ourselves feel weak, or making others think we’re unreliable?
I work with a lot of fiercely independent women who are absolutely killing it. Many of them are telling themselves the same stories I used to tell myself about why I shouldn’t ask for help: I don’t want to look like I can’t handle it. I don’t want to ruin my reputation, make myself too vulnerable, or be needy.
But you're going to get yourself to a point beyond which you can't really grow. You have to be able to ask others for help and lose some pieces of control. Highly capable women are achievers. They’re used to doing IT ALL on their own. And looking good, while they’re at it.
Sound familiar?
It’s probably how you’ve gotten through most of your business and personal life.
That can be a blessing and a curse. Yes, you’re capable. Yes, you’re better than almost everyone else at doing all.the.things. But the problem with swooping in and doing everything on your own is that you end up exhausted.
And that’s not sustainable. It’s also not how to grow a profitable, joyful consultancy.

I really enjoyed this one: “My frustration is growing referrals without hounding my clients. I ask annually or immediately after we hit a success milestone. I still need more referrals. Surprisingly, they do not provide many. I send them a list of their connections on LinkedIn to generate initial ideas, but they seldom turn out to be solid referrals. As consultants, we can't be chronically under-rested. You need to be at your best. There are many ways to price your services. When I was a brand new baby consultant, the client asked me what my daily rate was. I didn’t have one and had no idea how to come up with one. I had just gotten the price for some tickets for a vacation that were $1,050 a day. I thought, “That sounds like a good number.” It was a pretty random way to price something, but the client said yes. 🤷🏼♀️
Years later, I was trying to come up with a price for a new client. While touring the facility, the marketing manager revealed to me that the marketing budget the client had per year was $68,000, and that none of their marketing was doing anything. I thought, “Well, they're currently flushing $68,000 a year down the drain. So I think $60,000 would be a good amount to spend with me.” As it turned out, they agreed.
Flash forward to very recently when I had a new coaching client who invested $60,000 with me. She said it was the most that she'd spent for anything in her life except her house, and she got a really good return on that investment.
But what I think was important is that she had been struggling with not charging enough for her services and working with clients who were too small. She went right out, got a client and told them that the price was $60,000. By investing with me, she'd expanded her idea of her own value and she was able to embody it. And this client said yes to her.
“Your price should honor you for the work you put in and for your value.”

Rejection is something we face all the time in our businesses. It’s the kind of thing you can either control or be controlled by, and I know a lot of people are dealing with it right now as they are with a lot of difficult emotions.
In my second-ever consulting engagement, I had a great little gig going. For several months, I would get assignments from the client, bring them back, and get another assignment. One day, my primary contact changed. I came in to present the work that I'd done as usual and he said, “Okay, thank you.” No new assignment. That was the last work I did for them.
I was shocked and confused, and I was also now unemployed because like a lot of new consultants, I was working with just one client at a time. It never occurred to me that I should build a pipeline so there would be other clients besides that one. And that’s just one of the reasons that rejection came especially hard.
A lot of rejection feels personal, but it’s really not. In this episode, you’ll learn how to work with rejection in your business so you can keep growing your business and doing the work you’re here to do - not get knocked out by someone’s big or small no.
