01 May 2024Productivity Smarts 052 - CONNECTIPLOMACY with Marjorie Hope00:38:22

Marjorie Hope is the author of CONNECTIPLOMACY: Using Our Differences to Connect, and she graduated from Salisbury University and obtained postgraduate certifications from the London School of Economics and Harvard University. She owned and operated a large gymnastics school as a competitive gymnast, embracing the synergy between mind, body, and spirit while incorporating the importance of being “fit for life” and that “more is possible.” In 2016, she founded America Connected, an international non-profit and non-partisan organization teaching people worldwide how to connect through cultural diplomacy.

Connecting through Respect and YES, we can find common ground.

From the dawn of civilization to the modern era, the practice of diplomacy has woven an intricate weave of harmony, understanding, and mutual respect. Great kingdoms engaged in diplomacy, exemplified by the brilliance of the Amarna system, where clay tablets etched with wisdom and eloquence crisscrossed the region, paving the way for peace, trade, and cultural exchange. Great Kings recognized that "cooperation," not conflict, reigned supreme—a lesson echoing through the corridors of time.

I can teach people how to connect through our differences, develop mutual respect, and alleviate anxiety through diplomacy. Diplomacy demands a careful understanding of the positions and interests of all parties involved, highlighting the possibility of finding common ground even in conflict. It emphasizes maintaining cordial and respectful relationships with foreign leaders, even during times of tension. I firmly believe in the importance of civility and courtesy in international relations, emphasizing the need for patience, persistence, and mutual respect in achieving diplomatic goals, especially in our everyday world.  My experiences include stories of diplomacy with a sheik in Dubai, a Japanese Prime Minister, and the balconies in Italy!

02 Jun 2023Productivity Smarts 027 - Radical Generosity equals Radical Growth00:52:47

I'm speaking with Bob DePasquale, a professional speaker, founder, and president of Initiate Impact, a wealth management firm focused on generosity.

Being generous makes everyone’s life better. It doesn’t matter if you are the giver, the receiver, or the on-looker.

Bob learned this lesson at a very young age. In fact, if it weren’t for some generous acts, Bob likely wouldn’t be here today. He has dedicated his life to teaching others about generosity's virtues and health benefits, promoting the giving mindset, and improving the world.

The Generosity Guy has worked professionally and in volunteer roles for 23 years in three different countries and in 17 states.

When Bob was diagnosed with cancer and experienced the tragic events of 9/11in New York City, he thought not only his life over but everyone else’s too. He went from feeling like an invincible 18-year-old to an unworthy victim of life.

What happened in the months and years following was truly miraculous - or was it generous? The acts of generosity he experienced saved his life.

Bob’s story is unique, but his perspective resonates with anyone who wants to enjoy their work, give to others, and positively impact the world.

01 Oct 2024Productivity Smarts 072 - Don't Just Get Old - Grow Old - Cheerfully & Productively! with James Flaherty00:38:54

Are you ready to redefine what aging means for you? In a world that often views aging as a limitation, what if you could flip the script and see it as a new beginning? In this episode of the Productivity Smarts Podcast, host Gerald J. Leonard chats with James Flaherty, an inspiring 89-year-old author and motivational speaker. They dive into how aging impacts productivity and the mindset that can help us lead fulfilling lives as we grow older. Living in a charming 1940s dairy barn in the Berkshires, Jim truly believes that you’re "only as old as you think you are." His latest book, Loving Longevity, reflects this philosophy.

Jim attributes his success to a strong work ethic and the joy he finds in his craft. He shares a memorable quote from Noël Coward: “Work is more fun than fun,” underscoring the value of daily routines and prioritizing tasks. He recommends creating a nightly to-do list to ease anxiety and make space for creativity.

Throughout their conversation, Jim emphasizes the importance of social connections and staying active. He talks about “blue zones,” where community ties lead to longer lives. To tackle loneliness, he encourages listeners to engage with their communities and nurture relationships. Jim’s insights remind us that embracing aging can open doors to new passions and opportunities, making it a journey worth celebrating.

Tune in now to discover how you can embrace aging and unlock your potential!

What We Discuss

  • [02:01] Introduction to James Flaherty

  • [06:13] Daily discipline and routine

  • [09:04] Music and inspiration

  • [13:14] The importance of work ethic

  • [20:56] Mindset over physical condition

  • [22:39] The importance of education at any age

  • [24:17] Engaging with life

  • [35:27] Finding purpose in aging

Notable Quotes

  • [05:08] “If you want to live a long time, you have to take care of the basic machine. I eat properly, I don't smoke, and I exercise every morning, whether I want to or not.” - James Flaherty

  • [17:58] “Every day I am grateful, and every day I show gratitude for that. At 89, I do not wake up in pain, and I have never awakened depressed.” - James Flaherty

  • [19:25] “Every morning of your life, you're going to have to confront your biggest critic, your biggest enemy, the highest wall you have to hurdle—it's that person in your bathroom mirror.” - James Flaherty

  • [33:40] “The biggest problem of aging is that too many elders are living alone because she has died or he has died, and they're alone. Loneliness is the biggest stress and perhaps the biggest cause of early death.” - James Flaherty

Guest Bio

Jim Flaherty was an international advertising writer/creative director who has published two novels, and two non-fiction books. He was also creator and innkeeper of a five-star country inn/conference center. He is a frequent motivational speaker about aging cheerfully. 06 Apr 2023Mastering Your Productivity 002 - The Power of the Weekly Review00:14:14

Welcome to "Mastering Your Productivity: The Power of the Weekly Review." In this episode, we will discuss the importance of conducting a weekly review to enhance productivity and achieve goals.

Like most people, you probably feel like you're constantly juggling multiple tasks and struggling to stay on top of everything. That's where the weekly review comes in. By taking a step back every week and reviewing your progress, you can identify what's working and what's not and adjust your approach.

We are all faced with a never-ending stream of tasks, deadlines, and priorities. It's easy to get overwhelmed and lose sight of our goals. But by conducting a weekly review, we can regain control of our schedules, focus on what truly matters, and achieve tremendous success and fulfillment.

Now, let's dive into some practical steps to conduct a weekly review.

First, set aside a consistent time and place for your weekly review. This will help you establish a routine and ensure that you follow through each week.

Next, review your previous week's progress and accomplishments. This will give you a sense of what worked well and what needs improvement.

Then, identify your top priorities for the upcoming week. This will help you focus your time and energy on the tasks that truly matter.

Finally, reflect on your overall progress toward your goals and adjust your strategy as needed. This will help you stay on track and make meaningful progress toward your goals.

So, if you're ready to enhance your productivity and achieve your goals, start by adopting a weekly review practice. Take the time each week to reflect on your progress, identify your top priorities, and adjust your strategy as needed. To help you conduct your reviews. I have a link in the show notes to a free weekly review template based on the process I follow weekly called the Productivity Smarts Weekly Evaluation. The best part is that it's free.

11 Feb 2025Productivity Smarts 088 - Unpacking the Attic with Ann Mracek00:48:20

What if the things we’ve buried—memories, emotions, even physical clutter—are quietly shaping the way we live and work today?

  • [08:23] "As each item was brought out of the house, it triggered a cascade of memories associated with that item. Stories I had forgotten, stories I had deliberately suppressed, traumas—it brought to the surface the realization that there were unresolved problems and conflicts between family members that really needed to be addressed." — Ann

  • [21:24] "I finally forgave my piano teacher, and in that forgiveness, I realized that the third-grade child did everything they were capable of. It really wasn't my fault, and I needed to stop replaying that memory. Now, I'm excited to record, and I don't get any of that grabbing in my gut like I used to." — Ann

  • [24:58] "I always have it sitting here by me. This is a reminder for me of the grace of healing. I found Pop's pipe in the attic, and it still smells of cherry wood smoke." — Ann

  • [26:07] "All I ever wanted to do as a toddler was sit on his lap, and it never happened. I carried that rejection with me for decades. My baby self said, 'I am not worthy of being loved.'" — Ann

  • [28:18] "I realized all of a sudden I could back up and separate my adult self from the experiential emotional memory of the child and realize Pop was broken. He was in deep grief in a circumstance that I had no awareness of and couldn't possibly comprehend as a toddler." — Ann

  • [38:27] “I have a true core belief that the music I compose nearly daily is actually being channeled from the loving source of the universe. I feel that if that music is being sent through me, it's not supposed to stop here.”— Ann

02 Aug 2023Productivity Smarts 035 - Task Batching: A Productivity Technique for Streamlining Your Work00:17:53

Today, we're talking about task batching, a productivity technique for streamlining your work.

The idea that multitasking is a myth is at the heart of task batching. Research from scholars and peer-reviewed studies shows that multitasking reduces productivity, increases stress, and decreases the quality of work. So, the big idea and promise of task batching is that it helps you optimize your time, increase your productivity, reduce your stress levels, and improve the quality of your work.

Did you know that studies show that multitasking can reduce productivity by up to 40%? The reason is that our brains are not designed to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously. Instead, our brains need time to switch between tasks, and this switching time can add up quickly. By task batching, you can reduce switching time and increase focus on individual tasks, resulting in higher-quality work.

What is task batching is a productivity technique that can help you optimize your time, increase your productivity, reduce your stress levels, and improve the quality of your work. By grouping similar tasks, you can streamline your workflow and maximize efficiency.

Benefits of task batching:

1. Task batching reduces the time to switch between tasks, leading to increased productivity.

2. Task batching can help you stay focused and avoid distractions, leading to higher-quality work.

3. Task batching can reduce stress levels by simplifying your workflow and making it easier to manage your workload.

4. Task batching can improve work-life balance by helping you complete your work more efficiently, leaving more time for other activities.

05 Jun 2023Productivity Smarts 028 - How To Listen To Yourself and Others Better In Order To Be More Productive00:45:34

Today we are speaking with Wendy Nash, Meditation Coach at Kindly Cut The Crap that helps ambitious high-tech startup founders improve productivity and decrease procrastination without increasing their workload to build a profitable business and not burn out.

Wendy Nash helps ambitious high-tech startup founders improve productivity and decrease procrastination without increasing their workload to build a profitable business and not burn out. Unlike other life coaches, she works with knowing the mind, not just the mindset. It’s not just overcoming your limiting beliefs!

Wendy created a process called Meditation Coaching where she guides people to set up and maintain a regular meditation practice that fits with their lifestyle and improves their understanding of themselves in order to understand others better. If you think loving-kindness meditation is only for the soft and weak, bring to mind someone who rejected your business idea or funding proposal and wish them kindness and care – it’s tough! This meditation process helps gain awareness of what you’re good at and where the gaps are so you grow a sound business.

Wendy’s clients achieved financially strong businesses despite cofounder conflict, funding rejections, staff underperformance, almost burning out, investor negotiations, constant fear of failure, and pivoting new directions in work and life. In other words, she focuses on turning negatives into supercharged positives.

Leonard

If so, then this episode is for you. We aim to give you insights to improve your life and help you achieve your career aspirations.

We want to help you transform from feeling stressed and overwhelmed to feeling focused and productive.

By embracing minimalism, you can reduce distractions, increase focus, and boost your creativity.

According to a study by the University of California, Irvine, the average worker is interrupted every 11 minutes, and it takes about 25 minutes to return to the original task.

24 Apr 2023Productivity Smarts 010 - The Eisenhower Matrix A Tool for Prioritizing Your To-Do List00:14:39

Today's topic is the Eisenhower Matrix, a tool for prioritizing your to-do list. This tool is helpful for anyone who wants to improve their productivity and effectiveness and is focused on achieving measurable results. So, let's dive into the world of the Eisenhower Matrix and discover how it can help you be more productive.

The Eisenhower Matrix is a simple yet effective tool for prioritizing your to-do list. It was created by Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, known for his productivity and ability to manage time efficiently. The matrix divides tasks into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not necessary, and neither urgent nor essential. By prioritizing tasks based on their level of urgency and importance, the Eisenhower Matrix helps you focus on the tasks that matter the most and avoid wasting time on tasks that can wait.

11 Apr 2023Productivity Smarts 005 - 10 Tips for Improving Your Focus and Concentration00:17:58

Hello and welcome to the productivity smarts podcast on "10 Tips for Improving Your Focus and Concentration". We all know how crucial it is to maintain focus and Concentration while working on goals and adjusting to change within our organizations. However, with so many distractions and competing priorities, it can be challenging to stay focused.

According to an article published by Harvard Business Review, "Based on over a half-century of cognitive science and more recent studies on multitasking, we know that multitaskers do less and miss information. It takes time (an average of 15 minutes) to re-orient to a primary task after a distraction, such as an email. Efficiency can drop by as much as 40%. Long-term memory suffers and creativity — a skill associated with keeping in mind multiple, less common, associations — is reduced."
