20 Dec 2024Why I Slowed Down my Business on Purpose in 202400:26:10

As I look at how things have gone for my business in 2024 it really stands out just how much things have slowed down for Private Practice Skills. I’ve been pretty intentional about this change, and in today’s episode I share the reasons why I opted to pump the breaks on my business a little bit this year.

25 Oct 2024Working Overseas as a Therapist with Dr Therese Mascardo00:38:20

Today’s episode is a chatty interview with Dr. Therese Mascardo of Exploring Therapy. Not only is Dr. Therese a dear friend of mine, she spent the last five years living in Lisbon, Portugal while seeing therapy clients living in California (yes, her workday starts at 2:00pm to accommodate the time difference!).

We kept our conversation pretty informal, and meandered through a few different topics:

-What inspired Dr. Therese to go fully remote in 2015

-Why she decided to move to Lisbon full time in 2019

-How she overcame pushback to pursue her dreams

-What she’s learned about our profession now that she’s lived abroad

-What our hopes are for the therapy profession going forward

We share lots of giggles along the way (we’re friends, we can’t help it!), and we let our conversation go on a few side quests as we chat.

31 May 2024Can you Specialize in Treating Things you Relate to?00:31:35

Today we're going to dive into the question of whether it's appropriate to specialize in topics you have a personal connection with. Whether you're considering specializing in treating something your loved one has dealt with, something you've dealt with in the past, or even your current experiences, in this episode we discuss things to consider before specializing in something you're personally connected to.

07 Feb 2025How I Approach Treatment Planning as a Therapist00:33:12

Let's dive into treatment planning, shall we? ;)

Somehow I haven't made an episode about treatment planning in the 6+ years of making private practice content. It's time!

In this episode, I share some more nuanced thoughts beyond the typical assessment tools and SMART goals that we usually learn about when talking about treatment planning.

I hope some of you find this useful. Keep in mind that I'm just sharing how I approach treatment planning. There are many valid approaches out there, this is just how I do it :)

13 Dec 2024How Therapists Spend Their Time Between Sessions00:30:48

I've always wondered what therapists are up to when they have their doors closed between sessions. It's so elusive. I mean, I often do the same thing. But are other therapists really just plunking away at their notes and having a great zen moment? Or is there more going on between sessions?

Today, I took to Instagram to find out, and y'all didn't disappoint. I compiled your 53 responses and share the results here. What do you think most therapists do between sessions?

12 Jan 2024Can you Charge that Much When You're First Starting as a Therapist?00:30:40

We're tackling a big one in this week's episode! There's a misconception that early career therapists and new private practice owners are "supposed" to charge less than those later in their career.

In this episode we tackle some of the common misconceptions I hear about setting our rate in private practice and I offer some of my semi-ranty thoughts about setting fees in the context of our broken healthcare system. Super fun stuff amiright? ;) I hope you find this helpful!

16 Aug 2024What if Your Family Doesn't Support you Being a Therapist?00:20:21

It's not uncommon for our family and loved ones to not know how to best support us as therapists. Some truly care and try their best, only to inadvertently offer unhelpful remarks in an attempt to support us. Others are blatantly unsupportive - overtly verbalizing their lack of support.

In today's episode, I share some of the ways family and loved ones can be unsupportive (whether they realize it or not), and offer some tools to help you access the support you need as a therapist.

17 May 2024Let’s talk about Therapist Burnout00:29:16

An article in the APA's Monitor on Psychology showcasing stress and burnout levels updated with 2023 data show that therapist burnout is very much still prevalent. In this video, I take a look at the available data on therapist burnout and offer some practical tools to help us move towards health as a profession.

30 Aug 2024Critiquing my First Therapist Website00:39:35

When I made my first therapist website in 2016, I slapped it together without really knowing what I was doing.

I've learned a thing or two about creating effective private practice websites since then, so I thought it would be fun to go back and take a look at my first website. I offer some critiques, there's a definite cringe moment, but I also felt really proud of what I built given where I was at.

If you're just starting out with your website or you're feeling stuck in the process of creating your website, I hope this encourages you knowing we all go through the scary and awkward experience of building a website for the first time. You got this!

10 Nov 2023What's the Ideal Therapist Schedule?00:49:16

I’ve always been so curious to know what the most ideal, perfect therapist schedule is. Not only do I wonder how many clients per week should we see to maximize happiness, but also, how many clients per day? And how many back-to-back? Do we need to contain them during regular business hours or do we need to be open to seeing clients during nights and weekends?

In today’s episode, I set out to answer this question through an informal survey of my email list, which received 125 responses (!!). THANK you for responding, it’s so helpful!

22 Nov 2024My go-to Therapy Tools as a Therapist00:28:49

I thought it would be fun to make an episode sharing my most go-to therapy tools. They're not the "main show" of treatment approaches I use when building a treatment plan, but they show up frequently as a supporting role.

I hope you find this helpful. What are some of your go-to therapeutic tools that you find yourself pulling off the shelf time and again? I was a little surprised by what I realized are some of my most used tools!

09 Aug 2024What I Wish I'd Asked Before Becoming a Therapist00:31:44

Given how many folks leave the profession early on or who wind up regretting their career choice along the way, I thought it would be helpful to share some valuable questions to ask before diving into the therapy career. I also think some of these questions can be quite helpful to ask for those of us who are already therapists.

In the second half of the episode, I share some of the questions you suggest folks ask before becoming a therapist and share some of my reactions to those.

02 Aug 2024What Ending Therapy Actually Looks Like00:30:16

When I was taught about what it looked like for therapy to end with our clients, it was always a graduation-like, kumbaya moment where were had a full session or two to process things ending, reminisce on our clients' growth, and help them plan for a successful future without therapy. There would be a beautiful send-off. Tears might be shed.

In reality, most of my clients don't end therapy this way. It's actually relatively rare (in my practice at least). So in this video, I thought I'd shed light on some of the more common ways that therapy ends. I also go on a rant about why I have a deep dislike of the word "termination" and I hope we can change our vocabulary regarding the close of the therapeutic relationship.

13 Oct 2023What to do if You're Judging Your Therapy Clients00:18:13

I couldn't find too many places out there where therapists talk about the experience of judging our clients. So, I guess I'm giving it a go! Hopefully, we can normalize how human it is to judge while inserting some compassion and curiosity into our experience so that we can benefit while also best supporting our clients.

I often find myself wanting to hear personal, human stories from fellow therapists. And I'm also curious what the experience of being a therapist is like when we're sometimes going through tough times ourselves.

Today I'm sharing my story of growing up in a narcissistic household and the experience of unpacking that as a 30-year-old while seeing clients in my therapy practice. Thank you for listening to my story.

21 Jan 2025Therapists are Allowed to Have Problems, Right?00:26:55

Obviously therapists are allowed to have problems. But, is it okay to have…any problem? Are there specific problems that we’re not supposed to have as therapists?

In this episode we tackle this question. I compiled your responses to the question: "What problems/struggles are therapists not ‘supposed' to have?”

We also take a look at relevant available evidence to answer whether therapists have problems or not

(Spoiler: therapists look a lot like most people when it comes to the kinds of problems we experience. Fancy that)

06 Dec 2024Social Media is Spreading Misinformation About Mental Health00:38:56

Recent stats show that most TokToks related to mental health are misleading or inaccurate to some degree. I've noticed a trend in recent years that my clients will reference inaccurate mental health information as though it's common knowledge, despite the scientifically unsubstantiated aspects of their claims.

Today, I thought I'd dive into the misinformation about mental health that's out there on social media a little bit deeper, share relevant statistics, and offer some thoughts about what our role could look like in a context where misleading mental health isinformation is abundant.

27 Sep 2024If I Were Studying to be a Therapist Today I'd do it Differently00:28:57

Given how it is getting harder and harder to become a therapist, I've been reflecting on how I would do things differently if I were to go through my therapy training today.

As it turns out, I'd do a lot of things differently - like most of it! So I thought it could be helpful for me to share those reflections with you.

Please keep in mind that I see these as reflections on how I'd do things differently - I don't mean that I think these same changes would fit for everyone. But I think it can be helpful to hear different potential paths that are available.

15 Mar 2024Dealing with Angry Therapy Clients - My go-to Approach00:19:30

I've found it challenging to find resources on how to navigate angry outbursts from clients in therapy, so I thought I would share a list of tools I've compiled from various resources over the years into a general routine I utilize to help clients through angry outbursts. Of course, if you are concerned you may be in danger, or if your client's behavior is escalating, I encourage you to seek consultation straight away to make sure you're safe and also to support the best care for your client(s).

01 Nov 2024Tips for New Therapists to Feel Less Anxious00:23:35

I wanted to create an episode normalizing the anxiety most of us carry early in our therapy careers.

I used to think that I wasn't supposed to feel anxious, so when the anxiety showed up I made every effort to eliminate it. I interpreted my anxiety as a sign that maybe I wasn't ready to be a therapist, or maybe that my anxiety disorder was returning.

But now, looking back, some anxiety while we're practicing therapy with real therapy clients makes absolute sense. If we focus on normalizing the anxiety rather than fighting it, it might help the anxiety stay at a manageable level.

Of course, this is just my perspective and opinion. I'd love to hear your perspective in the comments!

09 Feb 2024Why are Therapists so Isolated?00:21:20

Today we're diving into the topic of therapist isolation. Rather than offer some peppy tips to make friends, I take a deeper dive into some of the reasons (in my opinion) that our field has become so isolating overall. 18 Oct 2024Are we Doing Required CEUs all Wrong?00:27:43

The California Board of Psychology recently changed the license renewal requirements for psychologists in the state of California, shifting from the CE model to a Continuing Professional Development Model (CPD).

After I renewed my license for the first time in the new CPD format, I wanted to share my thoughts, which I compiled in this episode. Will other jurisdictions follow suit? What do you think of this model?

21 Jun 2024A Balanced Approach to Productivity00:25:01

Today we're diving in to the topic of productivity. I've been through phases where I embraced a hustle mindset, and other phases where I've done everything I can to slow down. 15 Nov 2024Supporting Therapy Clients After the U.S. Election00:36:02

The election is affecting all of us in different ways, and I was curious to ask how supporting our clients during the election has affected us uniquely. In this episode, I share your responses to three questions I asked on Instagram:

1. What’s been the hardest part of supporting your therapy clients post-election?

2. What’s been the most positive part about supporting your therapy clients post-election?

3. How has it affected you to support your therapy clients while doing your own processing?

I know it's been a roller coaster ride for many of us. However you might be experiencing this time, I hope you are taking care of yourself.

23 Aug 2024Why Therapists Shame Each Other's Income00:20:18

As therapists, we're unfortunately quite capable of shaming our fellow therapists about money.

A therapist advocating for higher pay gets labeled as “greedy” and uncaring whereas a therapist working a thanklessly low-paying job gets called out for practicing poor self-care or not prioritizing their household finances.

This happens for a variety of reasons - far too many to tackle in a single episode. But I thought we could look at one variable: how a dollar amount equals different amounts based on an individual's financial situation.

A dollar means different things in different contexts, and I think that's important to consider before we go judging each other about what we charge or how much we make. I do a deep dive into what I mean in today's episode.
