On this week’s episode we welcome Coach Nick Whitmore.  Nick is the son of a former D1 head coach and spent his college years as a student assistant at both Rhode Island and Boise State.  Nick then went to coach under Rex Walters at the University of San Francisco.  Nick went back to his home state to be an assistant at NEPSAC AAA school New Hampton.  After a few years he was promoted to the head coach.  Since 2018 Nick has been the head coach at the Asheville School in North Carolina.  On this episode we talk about recruiting at Asheville, being a college assistant coach/director of basketball ops, working in admissions, the difference between AAA/AA/A in NEPSAC, what a guard needs to play D1, how he determines playing time and much more.  I really enjoyed the conversation with Nick and hope you do as well

On this episode we welcome Coach Raphael Chillious of the South Kent School back to the podcast. I wanted to have Coach Chillious back to go over some of the most asked questions in the prep school and college recruiting world. In this episode we answer the following questions and more:

-Is it better for a player to leave high school early to go to a prep school for multiple years, or graduate from their current school and just do a post-grad year?
-What is the difference between a preferred walk-on, recruited walk-on, and walk-on?
-Do college coaches prefer a player from a high school or a prep school?
-Do D1 coaching staffs look at paid recruiting services i.e. NCSA?
-Does it matter to college coaches what class you are playing at in New England?
-Do prep schools like international players?
-Some prep schools have multiple teams. What are the pros and cons of being on a second team?
-Is it a true offer if you didn't get it directly from the head college coach?
-What should a player include in their highlight tape?

06 Mar 2023How Spending 14 Hours a Weekend on a Tractor During My Teenage Years Helped Me in Sports + Life00:07:41

For six years I lived on a ten acre farm in Central Kentucky. We did not have animals or crops, but we had grass. My father wanted the ten acres to look like a golf course. It took fourteen hours to mow the ten acres and another 2-3 to weedeat around all of the trees and fences. While this felt like a burden and punishment as a teenage, I reflect in this bonus podcast on how this actually helped me become the man I am today. Teens these days could use this time to not be stimulated, and just think.

08 May 2023My Cold Water Experiences w/ Wim Hof, Laird Hamilton, + Gabby Reece00:14:34

In this mini episode we discuss my experiences w/ cold water. It started when I went to train w/ Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece at their home in Malibu. From here I was hooked. I bought a chest freezer for my home in DC and now where I live in Colorado I take advantage of the frigid mountain streams.

In February 2020 I went to Poland to train w/ the Iceman himself; Wim Hof. This five day experience changed my life. We also discuss some tips for how to handle the cold, hiking w/ no shirt on in 17degree weather, a 10 minute dip, the benefits of the cold and more. This is a fun episode. Please let me know if you have any questions.

30 Oct 2023Colonel Lawrence Yazzie's Inspiring Story: From Navajo Reservation to Division 1 Basketball01:03:33

In this podcast I am proud to have my prep school roommate joining us. Colonel Lawrence Yazzie and I met on the first day of basic training at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School back in July of 1995. We stayed up too long that first night w/ me asking Yaz about growing up on a reservation. He was just as enthralled w/ me being a Catholic from Kentucky. We have been tight friends ever since.

Yaz (as he is called by his friends) was one of the first native americans to play Division 1 basketball. In our conversation he tells us how he got good at basketball while growing up in the Arizonan desert. He talks about why he chose Air Force and the challenges of playing there. Yaz was a 3 point sniper and he talks about coming off the bench cold at the end of games to try and bring his team back. We also touch on him playing with his brother in college and the time he infamously made Sportscenter. Yaz works in cybersecurity at a national level and gives tips to all the listeners on how to practice online hygiene.

27 Nov 2023Oprah Recommend Author + Former Irish Hooper Níall Ó Murchú Talks Breathing + The Cold00:53:23

This week we welcome author Níall Ó Murchú.  Níall and I connected in Poland in early 2020 at the Wim Hof  retreat in Southern Poland.  Níall was my group leader and he spent the week teaching us the power of breath and how you incorporate it with the cold.  Níall and I are both former hoopers who have wives named Josie!  In this conversation we discuss how he got introduced to the cold and Wim Hof, his record setting performance in the European U19 basketball games, tips for young athletes on how to incorporate these modalities and much more.

Hear us talk about climbing a mountain with just shorts and boots on while it was 17 degrees out.  I was trying to survive while Níall was profusely sweating.  And learn more about spending ten long minutes in a snowmelt creek.  I loved talking to Níall again and hope you enjoy it.  His books can be purchased in the linktree below.  Not too shabby that Oprah suggested a passage from his latest book, "The Power of Cold."

Cory recorded this mini episode based on all the transfers that are happening at the college, prep school, high school and AAU levels.  In this mini episode Cory tells his personal story of transferring high schools in the early 1990s.   It was not as common at the time but this move changed Cory's basketball trajectory and without it he would not have played in a D1 program.  Check out his story and why he doesn't begrudge transferring.

26 Jul 20213 Things I Wish I Would Have Done as a High School Basketball Player00:07:10

In this mini episode I discuss the three things I would tell my high school self to do if I could go back into a time machine.  While this is not realistic, current high school players and coaches might get some insight into the benefits of these suggestions.  Here they are:
1) Meditate for 10 minutes a day
2) Incorporate Ice Baths/Sauna (Laird Hamilton + Wim Hof)
3) Be present and enjoy the high school experience versus stressing about college
