29 Mar 2018 | 033 - Maggie Covert LeBlanc of Walking Man Studios on Finding a Niche Subject Matter, and Working Through Grief with Art | 00:48:14
On this episode of Positively Creative, Maggie Covert LeBlanc of Walking Man Studios talks with us about being an artist in New Orleans, keeping her business going while experiencing a family tragedy and how her art helped her heal after the loss of her niece. We also chat about her custom work and her adorable dog series!
About Maggie: Maggie Covert received her Bachelor’s degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in Interdisciplinary Sculpture with a Concentration in Book Arts. She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her home has made a huge impact on her art, as the culture, vitality, and architecture are hard to escape. Since Hurricane Katrina, Maggie has been exploring the ideas of losing the contributing factors that make a place home. She has been drawn to the repetitive nature of disastrous events along with the governmental, social, and geographic reactions to these.
Her most recent work channels the whimsical nature of New Orleans’ architecture and characters. She continues to be drawn to details in the buildings and landscape of her hometown. Seeing the beauty and tireless work in each structure, She creates a connection to each establishment through the recreation of these in architectural drawings and paintings. Maggie currently works with multiple local realtors and real estate companies providing personalized illustrations and paintings for them to gift to sellers or buyers at closing. Creating connections with others who love architecture and real estate is continually inspirational to Maggie’s craft and business growth.
With her studio on Magazine Street in New Orleans, Maggie continues to work on Custom Home Portraits - for locals and many from other states such as Maryland, New York, Oregon and even receiving requests from the UK. Gaining experience with multiple commercial property drawings as well as album art and wedding invitations, she has branched out to stationary work allowing her to create custom notecards, postcards and custom wedding invitations. In addition to the architectural work, Maggie has begun a series of "Walking Illustrations". Each walking piece is meant to provoke a feeling of movement (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental)- growth in one's life and development. With these illustrations, Maggie hopes to portray a joy that much art, culture and people are missing in modern times. Focusing in on joy with a little whimsy and maybe even some historical or spiritual undertones, Maggie aims to show that "everyone walks the same path."

05 Sep 2019 | 074 - Jennie Lou Tucker, Fine Artist on Live Event Painting | 00:52:47
Today we are talking about live painting! Jennie sat down with me to share her process for live painting and the types of events she paints for. We also talk about how she schedules these events, what travel looks like and which supplies are her go to's for live painting. If you've ever thought about live painting or wondered what it's like, this is the episode for you!
From Jennie Lou Tucker: While studying graphic design at Baylor University, I began painting to escape the dreaded hours making art with a computer. I had not picked up a paintbrush since elementary art class, but blending colors came easily, and organic shapes appeared before me on my canvas. Since then, painting has become a quiet expression and gentle release from everyday life. After graduating from college, I immediately set out on a grand adventure as a Teach for America corps member teaching middle school world history in a rural town near Charleston, South Carolina. As my short teaching career came to an end, I was not quite ready to set my roots in one place. So I hit the road again, only to find myself destined for fresh mountain air. Originally I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, but currently, I reside in Denver, Colorado. The mountains and the great outdoors inspire me every day and remain a constant reminder of the natural beauty all around me. Technically, I initially began using oils, but have since realized how acrylic’s fast-drying nature is more conducive to my quick painting style. Head over to my Commissions page to ask me about personalized paintings. We will find a size that fits both your budget and your wall space. Specifically, I am most passionate about "live wedding paintings", and specialized commission pieces, but my main concern is equipping you with a timeless piece of artwork to hand down for generations. Thank you for your interest in my artwork, and I look forward to hearing from you! xo Jennie Lou Website: https://www.jennielouart.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennielouart/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/jennielouart/ Links: To get 50% off your first year with Honeybook, go to positivelycreative.net/honeybook! 05 Jul 2018 | 042 - Alex Bray of Prairie Letter Shop on Demystifying the Wedding Industry, Seasons of Growth, & Profitability vs. Popularity | 00:44:32
Today I talk with Alex Bray of Prairie Letter Shop! We talk about the wedding industry & how it’s different from selling any other product. She shares with us about seasons of growth, the difference between a product being profitable and popular, and how to get started in the wedding industry as an artist.
About Alex:
After a stint with Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta and a few more years teaching high school English in Brooklyn, Alex took a leap of faith that landed her in the middle of the country, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she began work as a teacher trainer. A manager noticed her need for a creative outlet, and an Etsy shop was born. Within two months, Alex was surprised to find herself spending many late nights filling rubber stamp orders and lettering envelopes --and even more surprised by how much she loved the work despite the long hours. After building her skill and networking with incredible mentors for over a year, she heard God calling her to take another leap of faith into a drastic career change. Alex opened the full-time doors of Prairie Letter Shop on June 1, 2015. Most days, you’ll find Alex in her quaint midtown Tulsa studio, listening to Spotify or podcasts and sipping just a bit too much coffee as she fills orders. 03 Aug 2017 | 016 - Amanda Campbell of Amanda Louise Interiors on Targeting her Ideal Client through Email Marketing & Blogging, Creating Styled Spaces for her Customers, & Collaborating with Artists | 01:32:40
On today's show, Dorothy sits down to talk with Amanda Campbell of Amanda Louise Interiors, from Greenville, South Carolina. Listen along as Amanda shares how she built her client list through social media, works with clients to create their ideal styled space, and talks about recent and upcoming collaborations. "I really think that the biggest part of style and figuring out your home is just buying things that you really love. Collecting things that really mean something to you and you're really drawn to, and not worrying about if it's on trend or really even what will look best in your space. There's something for just buying things that speak to you." "Trello is my best friend in the whole world...it has seriously changed my whole life." "Some of those big hurdles that I've gone through has really been one of the best things." "My husband says that i rearrange our living room every time there's a really good football game on, because I just sit there and rearrange furniture in my head and have to get up and start moving things, or start hanging art around the television...haha...but in the beginning it was really a laboratory for what I was trying to learn and do and it was where I really didn't have any restrictions on what I could play with and what I could do, like mixing colors and patterns. There were no stakes on if people were happy or going to like it, because it was just for me so I think I was able to try a lot of things and work through what worked for my brand and for my own home and now because I put that out there in the world, now people are allowing me to put that in their own homes and trusting me with that." 10 May 2018 | 038 - Emily Kerr-Finell of Wholesale in a Box on How to Approach Retailers and Find Shops that Fit Your Product | 00:48:49
On today’s episode of Positively Creative, I chat with Emily Kerr-Finell about the mission of Wholesale In A Box and we really dig deep into wholesale: how to know if you are ready for wholesale, how to get started, and how to find retailers. This is such a candid conversation about wholesale, tradeshows, and how to pitch to retailers, that you won’t want to miss!
About Emily: Wholesale In a Box was started by Etan and Emily, a husband-and-wife team. We're traveling homebodies with a love for station wagons, the Catskills, cooking, and brainstorming on our porch. Between the two of us, we have worked in high-powered management consulting, managed ops at startups, and helped artisans of every size create a business they love. But in 2015, we kept noticing makers who struggled to grow wholesale, sometimes closing their businesses when they failed. So we started tinkering with solutions -- at the time, nothing like Wholesale In a Box existed. Once we struck on the method, we started super-small, working with just 4 makers from our kitchen table. As we watched them thrive, we knew it was time to develop the software and training materials, and take the company full-time and nationwide. Today, Wholesale In a Box has worked with more than 400 makers, artists and designers around the world. We’ve helped makers quit their day jobs, triple revenue, and stay small when it was right. But everything we do today is as passionate and personal as it was from Day One. And we still work from our kitchen table most of the time.

07 Jun 2018 | 039 - Katie Salmon of Katie Does Marketing on Promotional Calendars & Planning Better Instagram Posts in Less Time | 00:53:42
On this episode of Positively Creative, I talk with Katie Salmon of Katie Does Marketing about how to create a promotional calendar, why it's important to your business and how to know what and when to post. Katie also shares her thoughts on Instagram, email marketing and how to engage without feeling like you are constantly self-promoting. Be sure to grab Katie's free guide in the links below!
About Katie: Hi, I’m Katie! I help shop owners and makers sell their products. When I was a pre-teen I decided to be a fashion designer. I bought a sketchbook, learned to sew, and spent my babysitting money on a “Teen Vogue” subscription. I was sure I was just a few years shy of my “Project Runway” debut.…But it only took me a few weeks as a fashion merchandising student at the University of Georgia to conclude that I would, in fact, be a horrible fashion designer. (Turns out loving soft, pretty things doesn’t mean you’d be great at creating them.) The creativity I lacked to design a dress, though, found full expression in Marketing 101 and I fell in love with the strategies that help creative people like you sell their “stuff.” Because business isn’t exactly an “If you build it, they will come” scenario, right? Your target customers are ready for your unique brand to meet their needs. But it’s not always easy to let them know you exist. I started Katie Does Marketing to help shop owners and makers develop a marketing plan that gets their product in front of the right people at the right time to make a sale. So whether your brand has been around for decades or you don’t even know where to start, I’m eager to help you take the next strategic step. Let’s get started!

26 Sep 2019 | 077 - Meg Sutton - Belle & Union Co. on the Wholesale Stationery Industry, Growing into Brick & Mortar, & Pivoting Your Design Aesthetic | 00:47:47
Meg Sutton of Belle & Union Co. is on the podcast today! Meg started her business by jumping into wholesale at the National Stationery Show. She shares her journey and what led her to pursue that path into the product world. Meg also shares the decision to open a brick & mortar and the challenges and triumphs she’s experienced since opening her store. She even shares a little but about what is to come for Belle & Union Co.!
From Meg Sutton: A little bit sweet, a whole lot sassy, Belle & Union is the creation of Meg and Josh, two honeys known for cookin’ up all sorts of homegrown goodness with their whimsical writings, wrappings and wares. It all started in 2012 with a relationship: a Southern art student and a Northern soldier fell in love along the sandy beaches of Tybee Island and the shady moss-draped oaks of Savannah, Georgia. But life took us from Georgia to Texas, where we now have our very own brick and mortar in sunny San Antonio. The shop, just like our own collection, only carries 100% made in the USA wares for gift and home.

05 Apr 2018 | Episode 34 - Evelyn Henson, Illustrator, on Building a Brand, Dropshipping Products Online & Learning From Mistakes | 00:47:16
On this episode of Positively Creative, Evelyn Henson shares about developing products & figuring out how to ship them. Evelyn also talks about the pros of dropshipping products, how she leverages her shopify store, and the trial and error of being a business owner and how she uses her mistakes to grow!
About Evelyn: Brushed with a love for all things creative, I grew up in Columbus, GA. After my 3rd grade teacher pulled me aside for writing "too small" (I had just made tiny handwriting the classroom trend), I probably should have known I would be an artist of some sort, but it took me about a decade after that day to finally pick up the paintbrush. I first discovered my love for painting when I attempted a floral still life as a Mother's Day gift in 2012 after two friends kindly gave me an old box of paints they didn't want. I honestly haven't been able to put down the paint brush since---there's something about art that brings out my happiest, brightest self. I started selling my work in May 2013 following my college graduation. At the time, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life, so let's just say I'm very thankful that my art business turned out to be more successful than my post-grad job hunt. It started with just a few art prints on Etsy, and has slowly evolved into a colorful & happy brand that has been seen in Glamour, Domino, Redbook, People, and more. I'm currently based in Charlotte, NC. Led by the mantra "painting is a celebration of life" I seek to create stylish art that's uplifting & bright. My happy palette finds inspiration in the colors and patterns within everyday life. Picasso said that "inspiration exists, but it has to find you working," &, thanks to countless hours spent with a paintbrush in hand, art's taught me to recognize appreciate the little things. Through this colorfully inspired lens, I hope to create pieces that brighten your day and bring sunshine to your home.

03 May 2018 | 037 - Carrie Schmitt, Fine Artist, on Awakening Your Creative Spirit & Honoring Signs for Your Future Self | 00:53:18
Today's incredible conversation is with Carrie Schmitt. We talk about how she found art, how it saved her life and the way she paints intuitively. Carrie also shares about her retreats, how to stay connected to our art, and how to be creative when time is an issue.
About Carrie: I began painting in 2009 after being diagnosed with a life threatening allergy to heat while living in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Bedridden and unable to go outside for months, one day a voice popped in my head and said, “Now that your life is over, you might as well do what you want and paint.” Thankfully, I listened. Painting became a therapeutic practice and act of tenderness amidst the darkness. Today, I am a full time artist, art retreat facilitator, and author of Painted Blossoms: Creating Expressive Flowers with Mixed Media. I currently live in Seattle, WA. I license my art for home decor, clothing and other lifestyle products with companies such as Hallmark, Dianoche Designs, teNeues Publishing, and more. Stores that carry my art products include Target, Kirklands, Pier 1 Imports, and World Market.

08 Nov 2018 | 057 - Blayne Macauley of Blayne Art on Painting Your Dreams, Working with Galleries, & Allowing Yourself to Hire Help | 00:49:26
Blayne Macauley of Blayne Art is on the show today. I loved our conversation about how she paints her dreams and the way clients interpret her paintings. We also chat about working from home, hiring help and what it's like to work with galleries.
About Blayne: My artwork explores the idea of the human soul. As a soul travels through life it changes. It grows, learns, and is damaged by life events. Certain moments in time can permanently impact a soul.
My work explores those certain moments that shaped and defined my life. Each impactful moment is distilled down to one image (basket, swing set, kite, man with a crown). With those symbols I've created a visual language that I can use in different ways and allow them to interact with each other. Those interactions represent the malleability of memory, and how my current life perspective impacts my perspective on the events of my past.

25 Apr 2019 | 066 - Kristin Malone, Artist & Shop Owner of Home Malone on Brick & Mortar, Expanding Locations, & Customer Communication | 00:45:20
Kristin Malone is on the show today and we chat about her creative journey from hobby, to brick and mortar, and to expanding locations. Her shop Home Malone is located in New Orleans and features local and southern artists. We also chat about the importance of customer communication and why finding your unique perspective as an artist is important.
About Kristin: Home Malone began in 2011 as a need to get back to creativity. It grew from refinishing furniture at night and during the weekends in a carport and slowly graduated to selling rustic wood signs with hand painted creole tomatoes. oysters and other New Orleans influenced items. As demand and passion grew for the small business, Kristin quit her near decade long industrial sales career in Jan 2014 to pursue Home Malone full time. Her wholesale and customer base grew as she participated in countless outdoor art markets and painted custom house caricatures for locals. In 2015, she added paint parties to her portfolio as she worked together with local businesses to help bring customers in after hours. In July 2016, she hosted a paint party at a charming clothing store that was in a New Orleans home on the streetcar line. Many customer requested for another event, and upon following up, it was then she found out the current store was relocating to another part of town. The idea of owning a retail store came to life and the lease was signed in September. While working side by side with artist for years, she has a passion for handmade products and the space was curated with goods that weren't just designed in the Deep South, but were also being produced. Home Malone retail opened its doors November 19th, 2016 with the idea of a studio/workshop space that was supplemented with some retail. But the response from locals was resounding and retail became the main focus. 6 weeks after opening, Kristin was exhausted! But only to find out she was pregnant with her first child. 2017 was a year of learning and growth on both family and business levels as she welcomed her son while learning to step back from work and allow others to take the lead on her "first baby" Home Malone. As she hit her stride with utilizing social media, launching the retail online store, and hiring more, 2018 opened many more doors for opportunity. The staff grew from 2 to 8, nearly 60 additional artists were added to the curation, the Mid City store expanded to it's upstairs space, her consignment space on the Northshore expanded to carry more items to ease the demand nearly 60 miles away, she launched over 20 new items to her wholesale catalog and and signed a lease for a second location on New Orleans' prime shopping area on Magazine Street. As Home Malone grows, so does the support for locals. There's been a shift of attention to quality over quantity and consumers wanting to know where and how their merchandise is being made. While running a small business with steady growth may seem daunting, working with the best customers and makers in the world makes it's less of work and more of a dream. A dream Kristin hopes to not wake up from for some time.

30 May 2019 | 068 - Jess Franks, Fine Artist on Layering Acrylic, Working with Minted, & Colorful Collections | 00:45:27
Today on the podcast I am joined by fine artist Jess Franks. We talked about her creative childhood, the winding journey she took to becoming an artist and why she is drawn to her current artistic style. Jess also shares the power of layers and changing subjects as well as her personal opinion about painting with acrylic vs. oil.
About Jess Franks: Jess Franks is known for vibrant acrylic paintings that dance the line between real and abstract. As a magazine graphic designer by trade (including work for Greenville Magazine, South Carolina Magazine, and Mechanical Engineering Magazine), she has spent countless hours on her computer poring over photography. A few years ago she discovered that painting not only allows her to delve back into a more tactile world, but also to create scenes in radical colors that no photo could capture. She uses the familiar structures of the natural world around her to explore new palettes, resulting in paintings that are at once both unexpected yet accessible. In between paintings, Jess has spent much of her time researching how social media and online commerce can create communities and sustain artists through untraditional avenues. She has found an incredibly interactive art-collecting community on Instagram and uses that platform as her primary location for studio updates and shop news. Her prints are sold at Minted, Anthropologie, WestElm, and MaineCottage. Jess has placed in multiple contests on Minted, including first and second place wins in the Minted X West Elm contests, and a third place win in the Minted X Domino contest. She lives with her husband and brood of children in New England.

27 Jul 2017 | 015 - Stacie Bloomfield of Gingiber on Licensing Illustrations, Growing Wholesale, & Pivoting in Your Business | 01:30:09
Today Dorothy talks to Stacie Bloomfield of Gingiber, a paper goods and home decor company that offers classic animal-centric illustrated designs that are sweet enough for children, but smart enough for adults. Stacie fills us in on the nitty gritty of growing Gingiber from the ground up, online and in the wholesale world, now in 300 + retail stores and licenses her artwork to many big name brands. She discusses how important it is to be capable of pivoting in your business when needed. "Gingiber is hear to make people happy. Whatever we have on a card, whatever we have an image, whatever we have on a tea towel, it's going to make someone smile." "The reason people will keep working with you, it's not just if you were a good artist, it's if you are a nice person they will remember you. You can say thank you, and then you can show your thank you with a note in the mail, or sending an email. Little acts of gratitude go a long way and building those relationships. If you have a good opportunity, recognize it is, and do some research, send them a thank you note, and really work on that relationship." "I don't need better products. I just need slightly better than person to my left and person to my right. Or, I just need to find a way to stand out a little bit more." See more of Gingiber here:

13 Sep 2018 | 051 - Bari J, Surface Pattern Designer, on Licensing Artwork, Pattern Design Workflow, & Getting a Book Deal! | 00:46:48
Have you ever thought about licensing your artwork? Well, today I'm talking with Bari J all about how she got started as a surface pattern designer and how she put herself out there to get her first fabric company to license. We chat about how to educate yourself about pattern design, her favorite products she's created, and all about her new book. We also dive into her process and how she finds inspiration for her collections.
About Bari J: I'm an artist. As a very visual person, I probably always was, but I didn't always create art. I was a fashionista sort in high school, and I was crazy for interior design. But I was busy singing and dancing and being an actress. I never ever thought I could make art. My mom was the artist. I was the actress. That was that. I came to art in my early thirties as a way to express myself when my children were young. Out of college, I had worked in advertising. And though I started college as a theatre major I graduated college with a degree in Social Sciences and Women's Studies. Not really related to art, I'd say. But when our now almost grown girls were little, I was always puttering around. I wanted our home to be different. I didn't want it to look like a page from a Pottery Barn catalog. I wanted it to look like us. And I also didn't want to dress from a catalog. At the time, I started making jewelry from found objects and then collage art as well. Soon I was sewing handbags and created a small business under the name Bari J. selling luscious fabric bags... and the Curated Maximalist Style was born (though I didn't know that quite yet). After several years, I decided I needed my own fabric for the bags, and with a background in graphic design for advertising, I started teaching myself to design fabric. A year later, I licensed my first line of fabric. It was a "painterly" line called Full Bloom that most assumed I had painted by hand. But I hadn't. For years I continued to create art just in the computer... and then I took the leap. Paint. And I was hooked. Now years later I know what was always true. I am an artist. And I am a painter. Since then I have created 15 collections of fabric, art for wall paper, home decor, wall art, and much more. The Curated Maximalist Style has become part of who I am and what I do.

About Katrina: Katrina’s candy-colored oil paintings are recorded memories of favorite places of things with a good dose of pastel colors to keep life sweet. Formally trained as a landscape architect, Katrina loves to bring the “outside in” by painting the natural world. Each shiny painting is broken into small pieces of light and color like that found in stained-glass inviting light and color wherever they abide. Recently, she was awarded the “Juror’s Choice” award at the Utah Women Artists Exhibition (2018). Katrina has participated in many exhibitions in Utah as well as in the Boston Area, galleries, and local plein air events in Heber Valley. Her work is found in private collections across the United States as well as in Europe, Israel, Canada, Japan, & South America. Over the past few years she has enjoyed sharing tips and strategies with other artists to improve their art business, marketing, and social media at the Sears Art Museum as well as the Springville Museum of Art. She has served on local art chapter boards and helped with art programs in local schools. When she’s not painting, gardening, or concocting with her kiddos in the kitchen, she loves to spend time outside with her family. Katrina & her husband live in a quirky but modern concrete home in Midway, Utah with their 4 sons (including twins), and daughter.

29 Aug 2019 | 073 - Whitney Winkler Art on Painting for Festivals, Sharing Stories on Instagram, & Collaborating with Creatives | 00:43:16
Today I'm in the studio with Whitney Winkler. We talk about how motherhood was the catalyst for starting her painting journey. Whitney shares what inspired her early designs and why partnerships are important. She also shares how she's developed and shared a diverse product line.
From Whitney Winkler: Hey! I'm Whitney Winkler. I hail from the heartland of the US, but currently call Memphis, TN home; and a good home it is! I have a steady, gem of a husband, and three little babies who stole my heart and ran away with it. I have always loved to create. I've been a songwriter since I could talk, and I’ve always been a bit heavy-handed with the glitter, if you know what I mean. My sister calls me the "more is more" girl, and it couldn't be more true. As I've grown, I am learning that more of most is more, and that sometimes restraint is the loveliest. I've always been passionate about beauty and truth. To me, the combination of those two elements is unstoppable. Painting has come along later in life. I am finding that it is another way to question and answer; express emotion, muddle in, and settle into process. It is like no other medium I have encountered. I always walk away from a paint brush energized and refreshed. My love of beauty draws me primarily to the design aesthetic of art. My favorite design elements are the modern and whimsical. I am always drawn to blues, greens , greys, and pastel everything(s). Natural elements such as florals and rocks can be found in my work, paired with wafty brush strokes and ink bleeds. Soft and clean lines are best when paired. I love bold and feminine; neutral and geometric. An extrovert at heart, I am most inspired when in community. I am so very inspired by the Memphis and online art community, and how much thought is put into the other. I want my (and all) art to be a spring board for the good of a broader collective, and a boost to the individual heart to boot. Thanks for checking out Whitney Winkler Art. My heart beams and bursts that you came! 10 Oct 2019 | 78 - PC Summit - Sara Trail of Social Justice Sewing Academy | 00:44:27
We had the amazing privilege of hearing from Sara Trail of the Social Justice Sewing Academy at the Positively Creative Summit. This is an amazing talk on the power of creating to spark conversations that need to happen. She also shares why it’s important to question and put in the work to identify your place within your creative practice. This is a powerful talk and I’m so excited to share it with you!
About the Social Justice Sewing Academy: Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of our young artists make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories, and these quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

Dorothy found another bestie! The two artists have too many things in common to count! And those things were just discovered with this first conversation that was recorded! "Being one of the earlier (pieces of art)...I feel like that always takes longer because you don't know what you're doing, you're just exploring, which is awesome but those are some of the most beautiful sweet moments...that exploration of the unknown if you have not done it before, you have no idea what's going to happen or how it's going to turn out. In this episode, Dorothy Shain shares about her life in Greenville, SC, how she discovered she could have a career in art and how she views her style and voice. We also chat about collaborations that have shaped her business, how to overcome the fear of rejection when seeking partnerships and why building connections is important.
About Dorothy: Dorothy Shain, a Greenville, South Carolina based artist, has a dynamic portfolio. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2012 with a B.A. in studio art. From her collages and patterns to her landscapes, Dorothy’s exploration of mediums is reflective of the colors, textures, and patterns drawn from her adventures around the globe. Heavily influenced by her travels, which commenced during a college Semester at Sea, Dorothy has taken her experiences back to her studio allowing the art to reveal the inspirations and influence of the cultures, people and places seen. She is constantly fueled, as an individual and an artist, by traveling to new places, meeting new people, and being outdoors. These three things constantly remind her of her place in the world and her connection to it.

16 Aug 2018 | 047 - Allie Dattilio, Fine Artist, on New Mama Life, Painting Collections, & Selling and Shipping Artwork | 00:46:27
Today in my chat with Allie Dattilio, we talk about studio spaces, being a mama and an artist, and Allie's journey as an accountant and painter. We also dive in to shipping and how she develops collections.
About Allie: She graduated from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2011, with a Bachelor of Arts in Art & Art History, and a minor in Mathematics. This juxtaposition of the creative and analytical has shaped her into a Type-A artist who thrives off of challenging both sides of her brain, pushing the limits of her palette and paintbrush and exploring strategy as a small business owner. Her paintings dwell in homes and collections internationally, across 5 continents. (Africa and Antarctica are next!) When she's not in her studio, she can be found blowing raspberries into her baby's scrumptious belly rolls, tending to her family's organic garden, and slowly remodeling and designing their fixer-upper. Her work is about hope - weathering the literal and metaphorical storms, and seeing the light at the horizon. Aesthetically, drawn to the contrast of dark, moody skies, against the rich glow of 24 karat gold leaf. Her landscapes live somewhere between abstract and real, a particular vagueness intended to challenge the viewer to discover the image on their own terms, applying their own histories and memories onto the piece.

10 Aug 2018 | 046 - Janet LeBlanc of Paper & Spark on Tax101, Handmade Pricing, & Hobby vs. Business Mindset | 00:50:04
Bookkeeping and taxes can be one of the hardest parts of owning a handmade business, but Janet LeBlanc of Paper & Spark makes it easy to understand and easy to do! We discuss how to treat your business like a business and not a hobby, taxes and how to be prepared for them and how to price your work. You can find all of Janet's products at Paper & Spark.
About Janet: In 2011, I started selling handcrafted jewelry on Etsy. In 2014, I founded Paper+Spark and debuted a line of personalized desktop goods. Throughout this journey, I kept getting called back to my love of numbers and accounting. I finally succumbed to the pressure and created the first iteration of the Etsy Seller Spreadsheet in 2015. This product completely changed the course of my entrepreneurial journey. Creating spreadsheets isn’t the sexiest or most glamorous product to design (although I like to think they’re pretty, for spreadsheets), but getting the chance to help creatives feel more confident about their money has been SO fulfilling.

19 Jul 2018 | 044 - Kate Waddell, Painter, on Staying Consistent, Galleries vs. Online Sales, & Staying Encouraged Through Seasons of Frustration | 00:46:06
I'm so excited to chat with Kate Waddell on today's episode! We talk about how she's built her business through commissions, online sales and galleries and how she decides which paintings become prints. We also talk about working through slow time periods and how to stop comparing yourself to others.
About Kate: I have always loved people, the human figure and color. Inspired mostly by light and color, I try to embody Cezanne in painting subjects in such a way that allows a human eye to detect the image through color and line. With that, my hope is to paint the things I see in a refreshing and distinct way.

10 Aug 2017 | 017 - Abby Phillips of Memphis Fashion Design Network on Creating Memphis Fashion Week, Building a Collaborative Design Studio, & Education Courses for Designers | 01:03:07
Today Dorothy sits down with Abby Phillips of Memphis Fashion Design Network. Abby fills us in on how she created Memphis Fashion Week, which hosts well known fashion designers as well as emerging designers. Abby has grown this nonprofit into a flourishing thriving success. Memphis Fashion Design Network now encompasses a collaborative design studio, The Lab, and education certification courses at Memphis College of Art. "We knew right away that we had to keep doing it. I don't feel like I built it, I feel like we kept following what people were wanting. It was the opposite of 'if you build it they will come.' It was like, they're coming, we better get this done!" - Abby Phillips "I think that's a big thing as well...committing yourself to being 100% present for what you're working on, whether that a mom, or work, or whatever it may be." - Abby Phillips Follow Memphis Fashion Design Network here: http://www.memphisfashiondesignnetwork.com/ http://www.memphisfashionweek.org/ Follow Positively Creative here: www.instagram.com/positivelycreativepodcast On Today's Show: (3:00) Abby's background with theater, film, & casting (5:30) Casting models for Nashville Fashion Week (6:00) The birth of Memphis Fashion Weekend (9:00) Pavo, Meosha, Jack Robinson Gallery, A.
