12 Apr 2024Episode 80 - Dr Bart Olechowski01:31:26

On this episode of the podcast we welcome Dr Bart Olechowski on to speak with us about running and the heart. Dr Olechowski is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, specialising in all aspects of general cardiology and interventional cardiology. He is also a runner and keen fitness enthisast. This really was such an insightful episode to research and record and I again want to thank Dr Olechowski for agreeing to take time out of a busy schedule and answer running related questions that tied in nicely with heart health.

If you run, listen to this show. There's plenty to take away from it and so much to learn about the heart and running. And as always too, Dave and Daniel get us warmed up before hand with some running chit chat. Have you ever tried Shaki mats?

As always everyone - happy miles and stay well x

29 Nov 2024Episode 88 - Centurion Running with James Elson01:35:29

On this episode of the show we welcome Centurion Running founder and Race Director James Elson to have a chat with us about his races. Anyone in the area who has or will be running ultra distance events in the future, will no doubt end up at one of James' races. They have provided thousands of runners with a fantastic platform to learn how to participate in this sport, along with many opportunities to take part at distances from 50k to 200 miles. In this chat we get to discuss ultra running in the UK in close relation to our very own beautiful trails on the South Downs Way. And particularly with regards to the South Downs Way 100 which is one of Centurions flagship races.

Thanks to James for coming onto the show and taking the time to speak with us. And as always, Daniel and Dave introduce the show with a twenty minute warm up, full of juicy bits. Happy running everyone x

23 Dec 2022Episode 64 - Portsmouth Marathon Recap with Rob Piggott01:07:36

Dave and I could not resist one last show, and this time to have a good catch up of all the running fun over the weekend just gone at the Portsmouth Coastal Marathon events. Joining us on the show this week is the man who definitely made all the magic happen, and who co-ordinated just the most epic Christmas marathon races, local legend - Mr Rob Piggott, from Believe & Achieve Events. As runners it is fabulous to experience race days. The fun and joy, sweat and tears that go into training and running, but it's also excellent to hear about how those days play out for the organisers and volunteers too. Rob chats to us about his own recovery after the event, the day and how that all went, including the good and the pain points which he believes very much helps each year run smoothly.

And with that show, it definitely now brings us to the end of another year and once again I'd like to thank everyone who takes the time to listen to the show. Dave and I do this purely out of love for running and the running community, and we look forward to sharing our own and of course many of your future stories as we head into 2023. As always, happy running to you all! x

04 Jun 2024Episode 82 - Louise Small01:21:35

Welcome to our latest episode of the podcast where we welcome Hoka Elite runner, Louise Small! Louise is no stranger to Portsmouth, having recently come to Portsmouth to take on the new Southsea parkrun route. She did so in style, taking overall first finisher token from the volunteers.

Louise and I had such a lovely chat about all things running, and it was great to hear her story about starting out as a runner in her teens and being scouted as a running talent. Along with that, Daniel and Louise had a great load to talk about when it comes to Hoka and we enjoyed listing some our favourite shoes to run in.

Thank you for supporting the show by listening. We hope you have a great week of running ahead x

05 Apr 2023Episode 68 - David Harvey (The Tunnel Winner!)00:49:03

Well, on this weeks special show edition, Dave not only co-hosts but also becomes the guest (again!). Winning the 2023 Tunnel Ultra run by Mark Cockbain from Cockbain events (The Hard Stuff!). This has been a race on Dave's radar for a while. Co-host Daniel tried it a couple of years back and didn't make it to the end, but Dave took the challenge head on and did what he does best and that is pulling off incredible races with pure grit and determination. Dave takes us through (with as much detail as he can as he's still fatigued!) the experience of the race and what it took for him to make it to the finish, ending up as the winner this year. Well done Dave! x t

17 Mar 2025Episode 94 - Alex Marshall - 2025 Tunnel Winner00:58:06

What does it take to finish a non-stop 200 mile race? What if that race was in a one mile long tunnel? What if the lights went out over night making it completely dark? Well, on this show we hear from a 2025 finisher, winner and incredible new course record holder, Alex Marshall.

Alex joins Daniel on the show to discuss how she approached this years event, and discusses how the race went down on the day. Or rather, days! Running an event like the Tunnel presents some very unique challenges in what is really a one of a kind race. Alex has a very impressive list of event wins and has a solid training routine she shares, that prepare her and keep her in great shape for lots of long distance races through the year.

I thoroughly enjoyed recording this episode and the only downer was that Dave could not join us on this show, but will be back on the next episode for a full recap of Daniel's race too. Enjoy the content! x

22 Jan 2023Episode 65 - James Grinter01:40:22

A first show for the new year! Happy 2023 everyone! Dave and Daniel were extremely pleased to welcome onto the show, someone whom they've both run with recently - James Grinter. James joins us to chat all about running, and specifically his own journey from a love of the great outdoors to taking on epic ultra adventures, including the JOGLE  (John O'Groats to Lands End) which is the entire length of the UK.

Also on the show, we have a special guest all the way from Ireland, Ricki Wynne who is also part of the Hoka family along with show host Daniel. We got Ricki on to find out from him what keeps him motivated to keep going and and training. Ricki is a world record holder and more importantly, just an all round lovely chap who get a kick out of helping others stay motivated. Ricki lives by his moto which is - KEEP SHOWING UP!

As always, Dave and Dan take you through some of their own races coming, as Dave prepares for one of his big ones, this years The Tunnel! Will he make it further than Dan did??? Of course he will ! Thanks for listening everyone X

What a treat for this weeks listeners! That's right - you get both Dave and Daniel having a run and a race catch-up, as Daniel returns back from a couple of weeks having done both Brighton to London 100k, and one of the Ultra Trail Snowdonia races in Wales.

Dave is also soon off to race along the border between Wales and England as he takes on the Bridge 200 Miler. That's right, 200 miles across a bridge. How is he feeling for that race? How are Daniel's legs feeling after a couple of weeks races? Any lessons or insightful information? All in this weeks episode.

As always, thank you for listening and happy running! x

23 Mar 2022Episode 54 - Daniel & Dave Catchup01:00:45

On this episode of the Portsmouth Running Podcast, Daniel and Dave bring you the latest running chit chat, involving Dave's latest marathon and half marathon escapades and results, including a nice result too for Daniel at the last Blended Trails race. Due to illness, holidays and such things, we have not got a special guest on the show for this week and so we fill the gaps on this show.

Daniel and Dave also invite listeners to get involved and try something different - sea dunks! That's right! We've been getting into the water in Southsea each morning and have found out that there seem to be some physical benefits that compliment all the training quite nicely. As always, thank you for listening and enjoying our content. Enjoy the sunny weather and happy miles everyone! x

Now, in it's newer form, as Run Walk Local, volunteers continue to put on these events every week. Another excellent running option for the people of Portsmouth and surrounding areas.

04 Nov 2021Episode 49 - Season Break & Lon Las00:44:00

Daniel and Dave are taking a break after 49 episodes of the show, but not before Dave gives a full account of his epic adventure at Lon Las. For those who don't know, Lon Las is a Mark Cockbaine special, in that it runs from the north coast of Wales, all the way down to Cardiff - non stop. Dave took on the 253 mile adventure and has an awesome story to tell after leading the race for a whole day, and then being forced to retire just twenty three miles from the finish.

The show will be back soon after we take a short break to do some technical bits and bobs and prepare the upcoming content for the new year. Thank you all for subscribing and listening to the show. Happy running and happy Christmas everyone! x

15 Jan 2022Episode 51 - RunTalkRun Portsmouth00:55:35

On this episode of the show we welcome Samuel Foreman who is the group run leader for RunTalkRun Portsmouth. We found out about the group through Instagram where Sam reached out to us last year. After some planning, and a couple of runs that show host Daniel went on, we got together to discuss all things RunTalkRun related, plus how it all works and what goes on during a group run. One thing that really struck me visiting the group runs, was finding out just how much the runners appreciated the safe space to just have a chat while spending time outdoors doing something healthy and good for the spirit.

Dave and Daniel catch up as always and discuss a bit about the new year, taking on your injuries in the right way, and a bit about some racing news and a first track 100 mile event for Daniel in October.

24 Apr 2023Episode 69 - Nayeem Huq01:06:53

On this episode of the show I welcome friend and fellow local runner Nayeem Huq, who has a chat with me about recent training additions like switching to a bike and racing in his first duathlon. Nayeem and show host Daniel have run and trained together a number of times on track and road and are hopefully going to attempt a trail run soon. Nayeem continues to get faster and stronger as a runner, including new routines and keep consistent with his healthly lifestyle and good training regime. Nayeem has a fantastic outlook on life and it was a pleasure to speak to him all about running in the Portsmouth area.

On our show introduction, Daniel and Dave catch up in person this time, as they head into the start of the long build and training for Spartathlon. Not sure any of them are really feeling the love right now, with Dave still catching some down time and recovery after the Tunnel win, and Daniel - well, just fatigued as always! Enjoy the show everyone and as always -> happy running! X

And of course, Dave and Daniel are back with some chit chat to take you from start to finish in this episode. They also announce the date for this years SMOGATHON race! Hello runners! On this show we have two very special segments for you. And the best bit - it's in the dark which will all become clear in the episode where Danielle tells us all the details about the event.

Then next up Dave and I have a really special and heart felt chat with two guests, Sarah Donaghay and Craig Winter from Runr. Sarah is from Fareham Running Club and has been working so hard to get more runners involved in doing food bank runs. This is something that goes very much hand in hand with running where runners are easily able to organise a run and food bank donation with their local food bank hubs. Sarah has such a powerful story to share which she bravely does on the show and along with her, helping her through the show and also helping to raise awareness, is Craig Winter. The work that Runr do in the community is just fabulous. This is really one not to miss!

Billie is a runner herself and enjoys taking part in Southsea parkrun when she's not busy training her clients outside. One of my reasons for asking Billie if she would be kind enough to join us on the show, is that Portsmouth has a lot of fantastic open space and park type areas which are just perfect for this type of activity and business. We believe that it adds to this amazing healthy lifestyle feel that the city has with people using the seafront area more frequently. We are seeing a splurge in people turning to healthy lifestyle living and using social training sessions like PT classes and running events like parkrun and Great Run Local and it really is a wonderful thing. Enjoy the show where Billie tells all about the business and her own background about how it all got started.

And as a bonus, Dave and I begin with our own introduction about pre race woes and motivation, as we both head towards a big race over the coming weeks.

19 Feb 2022Episode 53 - Emma Cardey (Southsea Parkrun)01:10:48

Hello all! Welcome to Episode 53 of the show, where we give a warm welcome to Emma Cardey. Emma is the Event Director at Southsea parkrun and Dave and I natter with Emma all about the event and wonderful team who help put this run together for us all each week. We had a lot of questions for Emma about the challenges of looking after such an event, but on the flip side, the fantastic results and benefits that the community down here gain from such a 5k run.

Dave and I start our show introduction this week with a completely blank slate and no agenda, so also tune in to hear us waffle on a bit about the new highway code rules (which we both knew nothing about!).

As always, thanks for listening everyone and wishing you all very happy miles! x

24 Nov 2022Episode 62 - Dan & Dave Track 10000:45:34

An interim episode before our pre Portsmouth Coastal Marathon show in a week. Hosts Dave and Dan take a trip down memory lane from the Track 100 race two weeks prior to this recording. The guys take time to talk through the experience, with their highs and lows and all the good times shared while running for nearly 20 hours around a 400 meter track in Cambridge. The event they took part in was Mark Cockbain's Track 100, where you have 25 hours to finish 100 miles. With a few twists and turns along the way, both came back with a finish and also their target A goals hit. Have a listen, enjoy the show and who knows - maybe some of you will be inspired to try this format and type of race in the future.

10 Dec 2023Episode 76 - Victoria Henderson: Female Ultra Participation01:12:03

In this episode, and on our very SMOGATHON special episode, we are joined by local running legend and ultra runner Victoria Henderson. Victoria has completed a number of very long races over the years since getting into long distance running back in 2015. Those races include UTMB CCC, Arc of Attrition and many of the Centurion races too.

Victoria took part in the 2023 SMOGATHON and comes on to chat all about the run itself and about a topic I learned a lot about preparing for this show - female participation in ultra distance running and races. An absolutely fantastic chat with Victoria about this. Some links I wanted to include in the show notes about the topic if you wanted to read more are below:

16 Jan 2024Episode 77 - Helen Newman01:26:11

On the first episode of 2024 we welcome local ultra runner and writer Helen Newman to the show. Helen joins us on what has been a role of episodes showing what local women have been achieving with their running, especially with the long distance events. Helen had such a fantastic year in 2023, achieving all of her running goals, including new PB's, finishing a 100+ mile ultra run in challenging conditions, and many more. Thoroughly enjoyed recording this and having a friendly running chat with another one of our inspiring local runners.

And as always, Dave and Daniel catch up with the Portsmouth Marathon and Country to Capital chat, as they finally got to race together. Experiences all shared. As we head into the new year, we wish you all the best with your running goals. Much love x

23 Feb 2025Episode 93 - Film My Run with Stephen Cousins01:37:17

On this episode of the show I am joined by Stephen Cousins who created the YouTube channel called Film My Run. It is a channel that has been of great help to me over the years when I've needed to research into possible races I'd like to enter. Stephen is experienced running in Portsmouth having done the coastal marathon and also the Great South Run many times in the past. And who knows - maybe he's agree to come and do the SMOGATHON this year? To find out if so, listen to and enjoy the show. It's full of some great run chat as we dive into Film My Run and a whole heap of other interesting topics.

And as always, to kick start things we hear from Dave and Dan for a ten minute runtroduction! Happy running everyone x

11 Feb 2024Episode 78 - Grasshopper Coaching01:29:31

On this episode of the show we welcome back the one and only Steve Bullock, founder of Grasshopper Coaching here in Portsmouth. If you haven't yet heard about Steve and his great run, swim and S&C sessions, then where have you been? Steve has become a go to coach for a lot of new and experienced runners in Portsmouth. His 'Track Tuesdays' have become legendary with many, many people attending on even the coldest and wettest of days. Steve comes on to give us an update as to how the group has grown over the past year or so, and an insight into his newly revamped coaching model and subscription. Always a pleasure to speak with the Grasshopper himself.

Any on top of that, listeners get the lovely treat of hearing Dave and I bang on for the first twenty minutes. It's like a warm up - everyone wants to get to the juicy stuff right away, but have a listen to two of the most clueless runners ever. We just LOVE RUNNING!!!

We wish you well and as always, happy running everyone X

30 Jan 2022Episode 52 - Michelle Maxwell (Maxwell Coaching)01:23:17

On episode 52 of the Portsmouth Running Podcast, we welcome Michelle Maxwell from Maxwell Coaching to chat with Dave and I all about good habits that help us runners become more resilient and better at what we do. Michelle is a fountain of running knowledge and has coached a number of athletes from the Portsmouth area, including show co-host David Harvey. Along with her husband Chris, Michelle has a very impressive list of running achievements including holding two Centurion Running trophies from the South Downs Way and North Downs Way 50 mile races. The Maxwell household is a busy with with sport and particular running and triathlon being at the very heart of it all.

It was fantastic to welcome Michelle on the show and I think this episode will help us all think about our own running habits and things we often neglect to maybe consider doing additionally around the running that can help get us through training and races in better shape.

Enjoy the show everyone! x

20 Aug 2024Episode 84 - Junior Runners: Romilly & Oliver01:40:47

We are delighted on this show to bring two of Portsmouths junior runners, Romilly and Oliver, to discuss their training and racing. After visiting the track a few times, we have noticed that there are some fantastic sessions being run by coaches from various clubs and it is truly a wonderfuly sight. To see so many children outside, enjoying the training together. There's always a lot of laughter and joy being had on the track, but also an incredible about of concentration and hard work too. A beautiful balance!

And as always, we bring you 20 minutes of warm up with hosts Daniel and Dave. Dave talks about his recent North Downs Way 100 finish, along with some chat about the recent Olympics. Including, the breakdancing!

As always, thank you for listening and supporting. Happy running everyone! x

24 Jul 2023Episode 72 - Lachlan Wellington01:26:39

On this episode of the show we welcome local runner, and also current full time student from Iona University in America, Lachlan Wellington. Lachlan is over here on holiday during his summer break, catching up with family and friends (and running). He runs in the NCAA division in the US for Iona and comes on to chat to us and tell us all about his experiences and racing and training there. Lachlan is a very humble runner but we did dig into some of his fantastic achievements, including a sub 30 minute 10k and running 14:12 in the 5k. Two very good achievements amongst many others.

And as always Dave and I kick start the show for 20 minutes with a bit of running chat, and also Dave's new hobby baking sour dough bread. Do his skills and talents have no end?

Thank you for listening and supporting the show everyone. As always, happy running to you all x

And to kick things off, Daniel and Dave catch up for a first chat where we really didn't have too much to say, but obviously made good use of our twenty minutes as we always do yapping away. From both of us on the show, we wish you well for 2025 x

18 Jan 2020Episode 5 – Colin Reynolds01:19:42

This week I am joined by Portsmouth based runner Colin Reynolds who shares his running story, from growing up in Yorkshire and taking his first runs while doing the milk round, to eventually returning to Yorkshire to run some of the Hardmoors races. Colin has a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors and is a really good person to have with you on a long hike or race. He is always willing to lend a hand anytime, any place and much of his long distance ultra running was picked up with similar kindness from other runners. Enjoy the show everyone!
25 Jan 2020Episode 6 – Emma Jolley01:37:30

Wow there was a lot to try and fit into this amazing interview with one of Portsmouths running super stars, Emma Jolley. Emma has run from a young age and been involved in track and cross country from a young age. She’s been a member of many running clubs and had really amazing success in her racing career. In this interview we hear all about her early years running and racing and about many of the titles she’s won. We even get to hear how she saved someone while out on a very recent run too! I won’t spoil any more – enjoy the interview everyone!
01 Feb 2020Episode 7 – Richard Twose01:48:25

This episode I got to welcome Richard Twose onto the show. Richard has an incredible story to share, turning to running and other sports to help him through a number of serious health issues. First diagnosed with diabetes at a young age, Richard grew up playing a lot of sport at school not letting that affect him at all. Through diabetes later on in life he lost much of his eye sight which really knocked him back. Through kindness and help of others and with running and keeping fit Richard got himself out of some dark times and he has represented Great Britain at the World Transplant Games. That’s right, Richard is also a kidney and pancreas transplant survivor. It was an interesting discussion mainly focused on health but showed the value held by many people for running and how much of an impact it can have. Enjoy the show everyone!
08 Feb 2020Episode 8 – Del Roberts02:08:31

On this show I spoke with Del Roberts, who is one of the organisers of OnTheWhistle events. Del shared his story which started as a school XC runner in nothern Wales. Soon after moving down to Portsmouth he spent years in the gym doing the majority of his workouts but Del soon fell back in love with the running after watching and then entering the Great South Run. It was then he got straight back into the running world and has since gone on to join Portsmouth Joggers, run his first marathons and ultra marathons and even done the Marathon Des Sables! This was a lot to cram into one interview so it’s a long listen, but one hell of a great story, especially hearing how OnTheWhistle all began. Enjoy the story everyone.
16 Feb 2020Episode 9 – Rob Piggott01:33:43

In episode 9 I welcome Rob Piggott, aka Fitprorob, from Believe and Achieve. For those runners in and around Portsmouth you will know of Rob for sure and have likely taken part in at least one if not more of his events. Rob has a diverse story to tell which ranges from being a chef in the royal navy where exercising on ships was a challenge, all the way through to personal training and now race organising. Rob has a lot of passion for Portsmouth. His races bring people together around the city and help make the running community what it is in the city. Enjoy Robs story everyone!

On this weeks show we get to hear from runner, coach, nutritionist and Goodgym Portsmouth run leader Katie Carew-Robinson. As we always do on the show we discuss Katie’s running from the ground up. Katie was involved with Portsmouth Athletics Club from an early age, coached by Pat Butcher. As an adult Katie has now qualified as a run leader and done a few courses with England athletics. She runs her own coaching business and is also the run leader for Goodgym in Portsmouth which we chat heavily about towards the end of the show. Enjoy listening everyone as it is another really interesting running story!
07 Mar 2020Episode 11 – Craig Winter01:31:57

On this show I welcomed Craig Winter, co-founder of Runr, the clothing and lifestyle clothing brand for runners around the globe. Craig lives in Portsmouth with his family and you will often find him running with either a single or double buggy at Southsea parkrun. Craig’s running journey began at a young age as his parents were runners at Stubbington Green Running club and in fact he was a member of their junior club back in the 1990’s. Craig has a passion for football and very much has the running bug now having run many different marathons. In the interview we get to hear how Runr started and why the idea came about. It was great to chat about how it’s such a good way of connecting with other runners in situations where you may not know who those runners are. We also chat about how Runr are involved in the charity Mind, helping raise a huge amount of support each year with their Miles for Mind. Enjoy the show everyone! x

For the first time ever we have recorded an episode online for everyone to listen to, and as always it’s another cracking running story. I am joined by Joanne Kitching. Jo is a Portsmouth Athletics Club runner and Goodgym task force member and also Goodgym racer. From grass roots track and field running to cross country running during her early years, Jo has had an incredible amount of racing experience and had a very competitive nature early on. She did much of her training with Gateshead Harriers. After a fifteen year break from running, which we discuss on the show, Jo moved to Portsmouth where she has also been a member of Portsmouth Joggers. Enjoy this next running story everyone and please do take care during this difficult time. The show will continue on for all to enjoy! x
30 Mar 2020Episode 13 – David Harvey01:55:40

In episode 13 I am joined by David Harvey, Portsmouth based ultra runner who initially started running to lose weight. Dave, also known as ‘Metal Boy’ for his love of metal and rock music almost immediately started running crazy long distances for someone who had just begun their running journey. His love for the longer and harder races is undeniable and still really motivates him to keep pushing his limits. Dave is coached by Michelle Maxwell and since his coaching started his results have really shone bright. In 2019 he took part in UTMB and Grand Union Canal Race where he placed 178th (UTMB) and 4th (GUCR). Dave is a hugely positive guy when it comes to running and it was awesome to hear his story. Enjoy the show everyone!
11 Apr 2020Episode 14 – Alex Teuten01:40:12

On this episode I chatted to local runner Alex Teuten who agreed to come and share his running story. And what a story it is! Alex has been running since year 5 at school where he raced against other children two years older, and found he had an incredible talent for running. This talent, along with lots of hard work, good coaching and inspiration from many people and family ensured Alex continued training until he earned his England and Team GB vest. He has continued to find success with many of his races but as we hear, running at this level doesn’t come easy. It was great to hear about personal rivalries with other runners and some great stories racing in many competitions. Alex placed 4th at the Great South Run in 2017 after a tough battle in the final couple of miles. Thank you for listening to the show and I hope you enjoy.
11 Apr 2020Episode 15 – Jhon Cosgrove01:08:59

In Episode 15 of the show I welcome Jhon Cosgrove (aka Pickledjhon, or the Marmalade Pope!). Jhon is a fellow Hoka One One Racer and all round awesome man and runner. I first met Jhon in Southsea where we got chatting about the Hoka shoes we were both wearing, not realising we would coincidentally end up as part of the Hoka family! He has done some incredible things in his life like being on TV shows, radio and other podcasts and he is a member of the band called MikeTV. One of my reasons for including Jhon in a show so close to the previous episode is that he is raising funds doing a garden marathon this easter weekend and I wanted to share his running story, along with supporting him in the challenge. Please enjoy the show everyone and take care!
20 Apr 2020Episode 16 – Sandra Tullet01:41:30

On this episode I welcomed local runner Sandra Tullet to the show and got to find out all about her incredible long distance running adventures. And there have been so many! Sandra lives with her husband Russell Tullet with who together they have shared in some incredible races, crewing for each other many times. Sandra was diagnosed in 2017 with breast cancer and is in the process of finishing a book written about going through that as an ultra runner. She has also had some amazing results in her long runs and has finished the Thames Ring Path race before which covers a daunting distance of 250 miles! 05 May 2020Episode 17 – Brett Rumfitt01:39:45

On this weeks episode I am pleased to get to hear from Baffins Fit Club member, Brett Rumfitt. Brett tells the story of his upbringing in Bristol where he grew up playing contact sports – but not running at all, all the way through to coming back to Portsmouth and first taking up running to get fit after some health issues. Brett’s story is one that really showcases the power of friendship in running because Brett got into the running via a friend who challenged him to a race after he had been through some operations. Until then Brett always ran solo, and had coincidentally picked up a nickname by the Baffins Fit Club as the “Baffins Runner” due to them always seeing him out. This came to light after he eventually joined the club! Enjoy the show everyone!
15 May 2020Episode 18 – Martin Williams01:20:31

It was a pleasure to welcome Martin Williams onto this weeks show. Martin is a Portsmouth based runner who has been competitively running for many years. Many will have seen him running at Southsea parkrun as he is often chasing the front runners down, and he almost always finishes with an extremely high age grading %. Martin is the son of Brian, who often comes to watch Southsea parkrun on a Saturday morning, and whom like many of us, is really missing out on the social side it provides. Martin goes into details about his training and racing, and how he also ran the London to Brighton 55 mile race, but decided to keep to the shorter distances. Martin is a lovely man to speak to and has a lot of great running experiences which I really enjoyed speaking with him about. Enjoy the show everyone! x
26 May 2020Episode 19 – Lisa-Marie Peckover & Gary Armstrong01:37:58

On this weeks show I get to chat with the lovely Lisa-Marie Peckover and Gary Armstrong who are both members of the Denmead Striders running club. They both began their running journey together back in 2012 after having been out only a few times casually around the hills of Denmead. Their first ever race was at the Great South Run weekend back in 2013 and since then it’s been lots and lots of great improvement with some awesome results for both Lisa and Gary. I first met Gary at a race back in 2014 as he sailed past me at the Hayling 10 mile. Since then it’s always been a pleasure to bump into them at races as they are always friendly and super supportive, especially when they are watching races and supporting their fellow club mates and friends at events. I also speak to them both about running and racing in America! Enjoy the show everyone ….. x

As a first of its kind for the show I wanted to try what I’m calling our mini episodes where we hear from the junior running in and around the city. For my first mini episode guest I welcome Cameron Walker-Powell to the show as he tells about his running from start to present. Cameron was a lovely, polite young man to have on the show and a pleasure to interview. He is passionate about his running and racing and speaks about his ambitions to reach the olympics one day. Cameron started his running at Portsmouth Athletics where he is still a member to this day. He has run many races and won quite a titles already. A great role model for runners of all ages and abilities. Enjoy the show everyone! xx

Many, many months ago I approached Naouele about coming onto the podcast and I was delighted that I finally managed to organise a date for it to go ahead. What a wonderful hour it was chatting about Naouele’s running, from starting to running ultra marathons and many marathons. Naouele is a wife and mother of two children who have also been brilliantly taking on various challenges during the lockdown which we get to hear all about. For those female runners out there who have taken part in the Purbrook Ladies 5 mile race organised by the Portsmouth Joggers, will know Naouele as she has been race director for the past couple of years. Pleased this episode to be joined by one of the group leaders for Portsmouth Joggers, Tony Conway. Tony is a big character in the running community here in Portsmouth. I’ve had the pleasure of not only being welcomed by Tony before at club nights, but also to run with him a few times, where I found his incrediby mindful of his surroundings and being aware about the enjoyment of running – something many of us can forget from time to time. Tony is very close to achieving his 100th marathon race and is looking forward to getting over the finish line of that one as soon as possible. It was great to find out from Tony how he got into running, which is what the show is all about. Another fantastic story and shared experiences that I hope you will all enjoy….x

31 Jul 2020Episode 24 – David Poole02:10:44

On this weeks show I finally got to speak to runner Dave Poole from Portsmouth. Dave has had a remarkably fast introduction into the world of long distance which started in just 2015 when he decided to run a half marathon, along with a bunch of marathons to raise money for the Epilepsy Society which was a charity very close to his heart. It really seemed like he just immediately found and regained the love for the running, especially the long distance because within a matter of just a couple of years or less, Dave was well into the world or long distance running. Enjoy the podcast as it dives into a few of Dave’s races and reasons for running, including a chat about club life and how running can be a tricky thing to juggle in terms of time with a family. We also cover some interesting races including the UTMB CCC and the Golden Ultra in Canada which Dave has run. As always everyone, happy miles! xx
07 Aug 2020Episode 25 – Russ Bestley01:58:41

On this weeks show I got to speak with the Portsmouth running legend Russ Bestley. Russ’s running journey started back in 1975 and is filled with many really interesting stories and experiences. Russ competed at a very high level in race walking in his early days, and eventually through a series of moves, career changes and health challenges ended up in Portsmouth running with Pompey Joggers and taking part in many long ultra distance races, and still does to this day. Russ is a member of the 100 marathon club as well and has clocked up some great times at the marathon, half marathon and 10k – 10 mile distances too. We chatted about so much, including the Cardiac Athletes Support Network which he was involved in helping set up. This story is one that covers the importance of the support runners get from everyone around them, but not only crews and coaches, but family, friends and many others. Enjoy the show and as always, happy miles everyone! xx

Davina has done many races and is a member of the 100 half marathon club. Davina and her family have also set up a really interesting relationship with an athletics club in South Africa where they take running clothing and shoes to help support runners in their training and racing. This was a great chat and I enjoyed every minute. I hope you do too! As always, happy miles all xx

What an exciting show this week as I got to speak to the wonderful creator and host of the JogOn podcast, Harry Morgan. Harry and I first met over a year ago when he invited me onto his show as a guest. Now the tables are turned and Harry reveals all about his introduction to running from his earliest childhood memories, to captaining the Portsmouth University Atheltic team, and all about his races and future plans to aim for some of his father’s PBs. We also shared some experiences around the podcasting which was great fun to speak about. Harry had a great story about how he got into the podcasting arena and specifically, the podcast around the running. My co-host Dave Harvey and I also reveal a few details about the upcoming changes to the Portsmouth Running podcast too, but you’ll have to listen to find out more. Enjoy the show everyone xxx
02 Oct 2020Episode 28 – Joe Wade01:44:48

This week my featured guest is Joe Wade. Joe lives on the Isle of Wight which has an awesome and friendly running community. I was really please Joe could join me on the show as he works for Hoka One One full time which meant we got to have a bit of a ‘geek-out’ about the brand, but Joe also has the most brilliant running story. It doesn’t take us long into the story to realise just how much hard work and dedication Joe has put into his running, and just how passionate he is about the sport. That passion is also shared for the Hoka One One brand, as we find out how the shoes were able to help and play a big part in Joe’s own running journey. It was a great story which included how the stars aligned, along with that hard work, dedication and passion, to end up with Joe building a good career in the sport he loves. Enjoy the interview everyone x

We also get to hear from some lovely runners on the seafront whom I interviewed over the past couple of weeks, plus we launch our first ever show competition where you can win a copy of Rise of the Ultra Runners.

Enjoy the rest of the show everyone! #timetofly

My main guest on this episode is the lovely Sian Hawkes who is a member of the Portsmouth Triathletes. It was great speaking with Sian and getting an insight into how her running began. We spoke about races, clubs and coaches, and also dived into a bit about how Sian trains for triathlon. On the show we also had Ollie Steele-Perkins, founder of Blended Trails which you will really want to hear. A unique and awesome concept involving pop up trails. Dave Harvey and I co-host this show, as always, and get speaking about all sorts of running related things, and in this show more specifically about someone called Wim Hoff. We also find out who won our first give away competition for a copy of Rise of the Ultra Runners. Enjoy listening and happy miles everyone! x

Dave and I catch up for a few minutes of run chat, including discussions about my Wim Hoff attempts, and more cancelled races including the Centurion South Downs Way 100 which would have been underway at the time this is posted. As a special guest this week, I am pleased to welcome Charlotte Jalley from Rerun Clothing to tell us all about the great work they are doing to keep running gear out of landfill and extended the life of running clothing. And our featured guest this week is the lovely Ian Briscoe who takes us through his story about becomming a runner while suffering with asthma from an early age. Ian was inspired by the Great South Run and has done every one of them bar 2013 since he started. He is a member of the Baffins Fit Club and his story is another really inspiring one. Enjoy the show everyone, and as always – happy miles! x
