12 Aug 2019 | Episode 58: Exploring an Alternative Method to Help you Clean a Pool with Paul Sim of Solar Breeze | 01:08:54
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Sim who is the President of Solar Pool Technologies. We asked Paul to be on the show because they make a solar-powered skimmer called Solar Breeze which we used when we were running our routes at Brothers. The Solar Breeze NX2 works similar to a “Roomba” but for the pool. We found them to be very useful in pools surrounded by a lot of debris or in pools that had an in-floor system. They can be used with any pool though and we used it in so many ways. We also found that having one in the water allowed us to focus more on the water chemistry and checking the equipment each visit and not spend so much time skimming. In most residential cases, you are only at that pool 1 or 2 times a week and having a Solar Breeze will help to keep that pool swim-ready for your clients during the time you are not there. It's a great option to help you keep your pools clean and your customers happy. Javier is also the chapter President of the PHTA San Diego Chapter, which has been building a ton of buzz around the industry. He is very proud of the work he did for IPPSA as their safety and public relations person, which involved helping promote their water safety videos. One common thing that came up several times throughout the episode was that we all have a choice on what kind of service provider we want to be. Do you want to be a pool professional or do you want to be known as someone who just skims leaves? You have the power to determine how you run your business and how the consumer looks at that business. Javier believes that if you want to call yourself a professional then you should take all the proper steps to become a professional. Episode 50, what a milestone for the Pool Chasers community! In this episode we thought we would do something a little different and give you a more behind the scenes look into our journey with Brothers and Pool Chasers. We thought it would be beneficial to interview Tyler’s wife Megan and get her perspective of everything. 13 Apr 2020 | Episode 93: Bianchi Design - Kirk Bianchi: Luxury Pool Design Inspired by Art, Architecture, and Photography | 01:29:46
In this episode, we sat down with Kirk Bianchi who is the owner of Bianchi Design and whose mission is to transform ordinary backyards into “waterscapes” or custom works of art. Bianchi’s design approach was inspired by a trip he took to Japan as a senior in high school. He was struck by how the Japanese architecture and landscape design integrated and blurred indoor/outdoor spaces in a simple, yet elegant way. It is this approach that makes him unique among conventional pool designers and landscape architects who do not integrate the elements of architecture, landscape, and pool design together. We love his approach of sculpting outdoor living spaces that encourage taking in the moment and quieting the noise. During the episode, Kirk breaks down how he views the swimming pool design as if he were looking through a photographer’s lens. Taking into account every angle and framing up the pool as if it were the subject of the photo. His designs not only make you stop for a moment to take in the beauty but truly tell a story as you walk through the living art form. We have never heard anyone describe it as he did on the podcast. Whether you are a designer, builder, manufacturer, or service company, you will be inspired by the way Kirk describes what we do and what this industry provides for our clients. We promise, you will never view a swimming pool or outdoor space the same! 27 Sep 2021 | Episode 169: Sutro - The Future of Pool Water Chemistry Controlled by an App & Professional Reagents with Jim Conti | 01:03:58
Episode Summary: Jim Conti is the Head of Sales at Sutro. The brainchild of founder Ravi Kurani, Sutro began with a focus on ORP technology before the company made the pivot to reagent-based testing with photometry, resulting in Sutro’s flagship product, the Sutro Smart Monitor. Jim explains the limitations of ORP and what led the team at Sutro to home in on incorporating Reagent Cartridges by LaMotte into their current technology. He compares the evolution of Sutro to that of the iPhone and that the future of the product will see the addition of even more features that add to convenience such as one-tap remote chlorine checks. “We’re an absolute extension of smart home technology,” says Jim. He goes on to share the many exciting plans the company has to make Sutro an indispensable tool for pool service professionals of any size. While he accepts that some service pros will always prefer old-school, analog systems over what’s cutting edge, he hopes that Sutro will change the game by looking at the product’s development as a “two-way street”, where customers have a say in how the technology will continue to evolve. In this episode we interview our good friend and the owner of Precision Aquatics, Dustin Anderson. His company focusses primarily on the commercial pool maintenance sector of the industry. Dustin has a real passion for the industry and wants it to be taken to another level. He is also adamant that people take the time to get the proper licensing, pay the proper taxes and workman’s comp, and give their employees what they deserve to provide for their families. We discuss some of the differences of commercial and residential pool maintenance. Dustin talks about some of the biggest advantages and struggles of running a legitimate business and what can be done to remedy those struggles. We also touch base on how important company reps are to your business and why it’s crucial to be signed up for their incentive programs. We actually met Dustin at the Zodiac Symposium after a social media class we were attending. He approached us to discuss our opinion on Yelp and had some pretty strong opinions on it himself. We talked for about 45 minutes that day and that sparked our friendship. 07 Oct 2019 | Episode 66: Improve Your Business & Meet New Customer Expectations By Using a Detailed Pool/Spa Assessment Checklist with Michael & Jason | 01:38:20
We were excited to have our mentor Michael Dennis of X-Pools back in the studio to share some of his knowledge. Since we have known him, Michael has been excellent at the pool bidding process. He shared his process with us years ago and it helped us tremendously to develop our own process and checklist, so we thought it would be great to share with everyone. We also invited industry up and comer Jason Becker of Clean Science Pool Care to join us and offer a different perspective to the conversation. We have been really impressed with Jason’s drive to be excellent and provide a truly professional service to his clients. Having both of them in the studio with us created an awesome collaboration which we are excited to share with you all. We wanted to be a little more topical with this episode, so we discuss the pool service bid process thoroughly. We talk about the importance of having a system in place so that you can gain the type of customers you want and set that relationship up to succeed from the very beginning. 01 Jun 2020 | Episode 100: Tyler & Greg’s Story - Our Polar Opposite Pasts and How One Moment in Time Formed an Unbreakable Brotherhood | 02:58:29
Episode 100 is here and we can’t believe it! We have interviewed a ton of people over the last few years and while doing so, we have discussed with them how their pasts have shaped who they are today. The background stories are one of our favorite parts of each episode because you can really learn a lot about someone when you understand where they came from and what they have overcome to get to where they are today. So, for this monumental episode, we have decided to flip the script and share our story with you all. Each of us goes back to our roots and discusses our past and how we got to the moment in our life where we crossed paths in our junior year of high school. Our upbringings could not be more opposite as you will hear throughout the episode, but somehow, someway, we found each other and formed an unlikely friendship and brotherhood. This story was not easy to tell, as we both share some of our most vulnerable moments, insecurities, and struggles, but we wanted to be real with you, so you understand who we are and what we have overcome in our lives. So, we go deep in this one, but we also have many laughs and discuss some of our favorite moments growing up and all the crazy fun times we had together. They say opposites attract and we could not be a better yin and yang example of that. Since we call each other brothers and we don’t look alike, we get asked all the time how that happened and that is hard to tell in a short conversation, so this is the whole narrative. We hope you connect to our story in some way and that it inspires people to not judge a book by its cover but to look past the surface and get to know people for who they really are. 11 Jan 2023 | How to Work with Real Estate Agents & Not Waste Anybody’s Time with Jennifer & Samantha of AZ Luxury Home Group | 01:43:07
Today, we sit down with Jennifer Kourouglos and Samantha Moore of real estate listing company AZ Luxury Home Group and the brokerage Launch Real Estate. Since partnering eight years prior, their business has grown from solely doing resale for buyers and sellers to representing builders and developers. They have also recently started buying and flipping their own properties together. Listen in as we discuss the unfortunate misconceptions that so many aspiring realtors pick up in a modern society filled with reality shows and social media influencers that over-glamorize the real estate industry while shying away from the hard and often mundane work that it really takes to succeed. Jennifer and Samantha remind us that consistent effort, market knowledge, and consistency—the basic fundamentals of any business—are what’s needed to win in the world of real estate. With the knowledge that Arizona homebuyers put pools (or the possibility of building a pool) at the top of their list of priorities when shopping for a property, we dive deep into how realtors can best prepare a home and pool for the market. They also explain how pool companies can best work with realtors to create a win-win scenario that nets both parties more business in the long run. Some benefits that come with great partnerships include being able to stay on top of the latest pool trends, including the luxury sector, and being able to get a more holistic perspective on the pool market in general. 23 Mar 2020 | Episode 90: 1099 Independent Contractor or W-2 Employee: Breaking Down the Difference with Rich, Javier, and Dustin | 01:49:16
This episode threw quite a curveball at us, we were on our way to Long Beach and were prepared to record our final stop of the live tour when we found out that the city was recommending to not have large group gatherings. We decided it was in the best health interest for everyone if we canceled the event. We were pretty bummed about it but we adjusted and changed it to a Facebook Live, as well as an epic podcast episode. We turned our Air BNB into a recording studio and off we went! We sat down with our good friends Rich Gallo of Pure Swim, Javier Payan of Payan Pools, and Dustin Anderson of Precision Aquatics to discuss 1099 Independent Contractors and W-2 Employees. With the new AB-5 Law coming out in California, there have been a lot of questions surrounding this topic and we wanted to shed some light on what it means and how to adjust to it if necessary. All 3 of the guests, as well as us, have dealt with both independent contractors and employees so during the episode we share our experiences. The overall goal of this podcast was to define each one so that businesses could figure out where they fit into the conversation and help make the transition if necessary. There is a lot of negative talk surrounding this, but we tried to stay positive and make suggestions that will overall make the industry better. When we were running Brothers Pool Service this topic was always being discussed between us and since we started Pool Chasers, it has been one of the most asked for topics. We hope you get a better understanding of it and get as much out of this episode as we did. Advanced Pool Specialists is what Brett does now, but he has had quite the journey through the pool industry. He has been in the industry his entire adult life and is very passionate about it. One of the things Brett said that we admired is that he wants to leave the industry better then he found it. What a great way to look at the industry and life in general. We left the interview inspired as we normally do after speaking with Brett and we think you guys will as well. Brett had his own service business in California for several years. You have probably heard us speak about him multiple times on the podcast because he actually started a podcast of his own called Pool Business Academy several years ago. Unfortunately his podcast ended after 11 episodes, but it left us so pumped and we have looked up to him ever since. He also worked for Alan Smith Pools as a salesman and then worked heavily on their reverse osmosis division. All of that has led him to what he is doing today which is pool surfaces. He is applying the ecoFINISH product aquaBRIGHT. It involves a flame thrower which is pretty awesome! We discuss all of this and more on the episode. There are a lot of great nuggets to take away from this episodes so listen closely, we hope you enjoy it. You can find Brett and Advanced Pool Specialists at: https://www.advanceyourpool.com/ On Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/advanceyourpool/ On Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/advanceyourpool/?hl=en You can research ecoFINISH and aquaBRIGHT at: https://www.ecopoolfinish.com/ If your in California, look up Brett if you are interested in applying it or discussing it further. We got to tour the facility, roll fiberglass, and even see a fiberglass pool being installed “The River Pools Way.” Being around their team for a few days was a breath of fresh air. They are the true definition of a family and we saw that throughout every department. We have heard many different opinions about fiberglass pools throughout the years, so we wanted to find out the truth from the people that are experts at them. In this episode we dive deep into all things fiberglass pools as we get answers from Jason, Aaron, and Cristian. 21 Sep 2020 | Episode 116: The Oceanside Glass & Tile Story with Sean Gildea and Brian Fitzgerald | 01:34:05
In this episode, we sat down with Oceanside Glass & Tile’s CEO Sean Gildea as well as their Product and Inventory Manager Brian Fitzgerald. We have been big fans of Oceanside since we first saw it on a job site. There is just something unique and special when you open the box and once it is installed it looks even more fantastic. We have always heard that they had a very cool origin story and after recording the interview, let us tell you, it did not disappoint. Oceanside’s story began just over 25 years ago in the year 1992. Three artists and a young entrepreneur created a game-changing trifecta - Tile, Glass, and Sustainability. Forging into uncharted waters to develop handcrafted tile with recycled bottled glass. Listen to the episode to hear how their story unfolded and how Oceanside was born. Sean and Brian also share Oceanside’s past and current cultures with us. To this day, many of their original beliefs are intertwined in the day to day operations as well as the culture and product. We have learned over the years that when it comes to a high-quality product, that the company behind that product has spent a ton of time implementing the right systems. Such is the case with Oceanside, it is no surprise that they are so successful. We discuss their manufacturing process in detail and it is something you do not want to miss! We even throw in some discussion about tacos! Who doesn’t love tacos, right?! 10 Feb 2020 | Episode 84: Keeping Your Reputation Intact While Continuing to Grow the Business with Tony Arredondo | 01:23:55
In this episode we had the opportunity to interview our good friend Tony Arredondo of The Pool Guys of Tampa Bay - Tampapoolpro.com. He has been a big supporter of us from the beginning and we were excited to finally get him on the podcast. Tony is a member of the National Plasterers Council and currently the President of the Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) Tampa Bay Chapter. Tony shared his unique story with us of how he got into the industry. We discussed how the foreclosure market provided him with rapid growth when he first started, so much so that he had to stop taking on new customers at one point to readjust his business strategy. This allowed him to keep his reputation intact, while still providing the customers with the best experience possible. Something we had to do several times while running Brothers Pool Service. We also had a great conversation about the Tampa group which is an organization he is involved in, which is made up of industry professionals who are experts in different fields. They work with one another to provide their clients with the best customer service possible by making sure the right guy is in the backyard to do each job. This is a great way of coming together to lift the image of the industry and support one another so that everyone is successful. We were very impressed by what they got going on out there in Tampa and think it is something that more of this industry should be open to doing. Orenda also provides free industry-leading tools to pool professionals such as The Orenda Calculator™, and educational resources like Orenda Academy™ and the Rule Your Pool Podcast. Listen in as Eric discusses what he has learned from hosting the “Rule Your Pool’ podcast and the importance of approaching water treatment from water’s point of view. In other words, the practitioner will always get more insight by asking, “What does water want?” rather than mindlessly dumping your run-of-the mill chemicals just because that is the unfortunate norm in the industry. He also talks about what separates “good” pool companies from “great” ones. It’s not about skill nor intelligence. Rather, truly great companies have a culture which respects and obeys physics instead of trying to fight it—by accepting that they can’t defeat water. This is a company which embraces the reality of problem pools being the norm, and encourages its technicians to speak up about them, all so as to be able to standardize their approach to pool chemistry. 20 Jul 2020 | Episode 107: 5 Ways to Make Your Email Communication More Efficient | 00:46:58
You may be wondering why Email? Well, the fact is that every day, millions of emails are sent from companies to their customers and suppliers. A well-written email can lead to business success, while a bad email can harm a professional relationship, derail a project, or hurt your reputation. People often think that emails can be less formal, but the messages you send are a reflection of your own professionalism, values, and attention to detail, so a certain level of formatting is needed. Proper formatting improves the chances that the recipient will read, react, and respond positively to your email. You’re emailing your customer to get a response, doing things professionally will help get the responses you are looking for. Efficiency is key, especially when you are wearing so many hats as the business owner, or whatever your responsibilities are within your company. Juggling all the tasks can be difficult, trust us we know! That is why we discuss these 5 ways that can speed up and streamline your process, while also looking and acting like a professional. We have all sent out an email that we wish we could have back and we want to help you avoid that in the future. We had a lot of success in this area while running Brothers, but we also had our fair share of learning experiences as well. We even chat about a few of ours on the episode. Email is still a key component in what we do every day, why not take the time to do it right? We have noticed over the years, that when you tell someone you work in the swimming pool industry, they automatically think that you can answer every question they have about their pool. One of the most commonly asked questions we received was how does in-ground pool plumbing work. It seems to be one of the more complex things to understand when it comes to swimming pools. We had our generic answers for them, but since this is a podcast for pool professionals, we wanted to take a much deeper dive into the world of plumbing. That’s where our guest today Justin Bowie from JMax Plumbing in Tempe, AZ comes in! We have known Justin for several years now and when it comes to the ins and outs of how to plumb a swimming pool, he is the man, plus he has an amazing beard! Seriously, check it out when you get a chance. We asked Justin to explain to us how a pool plumbing system works exactly and trust us, you do not want to miss his answer. We also asked him several other key questions such as how to find air leaks in pool plumbing, what kind of issues can come when plumbing a pool, and even what PVC glue to use for pool plumbing. He also shared some best practices for pluming a brand-new pool, replacing equipment, plumbing above and below grade, and fixing a leak on a valve or fitting. When it comes to plumbing, you also need some specialty tools, Justin talks about some of those and what you absolutely need to keep on your truck. One of our favorite parts of the episode, was Justin’s answer when we asked him what is the best way to go over a complex pool plumbing system? His suggestion and thorough answer are like nothing we have ever heard before! After listening to this, if you follow his instructions, you should never have an issue figuring out what each plumbing line does ever again. In this episode we interview Ruben Galvan who is the Vice President of training and organizational development for Fluidra (Zodiac/Jandy). We discuss the importance of HR and why making it a priority will set your business up for success. We know that many of the businesses owners in our industry wear multiple hats with one of them being HR. They tend to make other parts of the business such as the customer, generating revenue, and getting the services out their priority. Those are all very important, but imagine the impact it can have on your business if you can take the time to invest into your people by listening to them, showing them recognition and appreciation, and letting them know how important they are to the company. It is vital to understand that if you want to have the best customer experience it starts with the best employee experience. They are the front line and the ones that interact with the customers on a daily basis. What they experience when they come in each day will be reflected to the customer out in the field. 13 Jan 2020 | Episode 80: Pentair IntelliConnect Overview, Quick Start Guide, and Setup with Rodney McCall and Brian King | 01:43:50
In this episode, we sat down with Rodney McCall and Brian King to discuss the Pentair IntelliConnect. When these first came out we were stoked to be able to have different options for automation. It allowed us to have the chance to automate the one pump, one filter type pools. For us, those were some of the toughest customers to sell automation to because the larger systems may have been outside their price range. It was a game-changer for us at Brothers Pool Service and we know it has been for many companies. As always though, learning a new product can be tricky and we understand that, so we wanted to break it down in a way that can help you get a better grasp of it. We discuss what the IntelliConnect is designed to do, why Pentair chose to develop it, what comes with the product when you purchase it, what can be connected to it, and go through the quick start guide. We also discuss a few tricks on setting up the wireless connection and the new Pentair Home App. We learned several things in this episode so we are excited to share it with you! 10 Aug 2020 | Episode 110: How to Use Jobber’s Software to Streamline your Service Business with Chris Gardner | 01:39:57
In this episode, we sat down with one of Jobber’s experts Chris Gardner to discuss the software that changed our business. This day and age, customers expect a convenient experience from start to finish and when you use Jobber you can give that to them. 33% of people say they would pay 20% more for a convenient experience, so make why not make convenience your competitive edge? You don’t need to beat your competition by lowering your prices when you can beat them by offering more value and it all starts with the booking process. You can set up custom forms so that your customer can book online, through social media or by phone quick and easy. You even receive a booking request notification when a customer submits a request which you can immediately review and convert to a quote or schedule a job. By using Jobber’s field service business software, you can win more jobs by creating branded quotes that customers can review and approve online then pay any deposits required. With the right tools for planning your week, you can fit more jobs into each day and get more done without having to hire additional staff. Your routes are optimized, customers can receive automatic appointment reminders, and your technicians always have the job details they need in their Jobber app. For the technicians, you can create custom forms that will allow them to enter chemical readings, jobs performed, and any other information you want to collect each visit. It’s fully customizable, so track only the information you want to. On top of that, with Jobber’s waypoint markers, you can see every time your team interacts with the Jobber app, so you can view where the work is getting done and when. Time is our most valuable asset, right? Jobber offers convenient automotive features such as reminders to the client, one-click conversions, quote reminders, and batch invoicing. One of the biggest complaints we hear is how long billing takes. With Jobber, you can also set up automatic invoicing and payments. This is huge because you can create recurring invoices, but throughout the month you can add one-time services such as filter cleans or replacement parts and it will run the process for you. Once it runs, only the recurring charges will stay on for next month’s billing cycle. By using their custom automation, you can get back more of your day to work on the business instead of in it. We promise you want to get Jobber today and take advantage of their 14-day free trial! Episode Webpage: If you enjoyed this epi

16 Dec 2019 | Episode 76: CPO License - Why You Should Have it and How to Utilize it to Your Advantage with Katie Crysdale | 01:24:12
Often the CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification is overlooked because traditionally it was only needed for commercial pool operators. We sat down with Katie Crysdale of Lakeview Aquatic Consultants LTD to discuss why everyone should consider taking the course whether you service commercial pools or not. Having the license opens up a lot of opportunities, many that you may not have known existed. Katie does a wonderful job explaining some of the options that become available to you once you have the license. We had the opportunity to take the CPO class with Katie while she visited us in August and we learned quite a few things, some of which were brand new to us. We wish we would have taken the class sooner and used it to its full potential while we were running Brothers. Once you have the license it can be used in so many ways to improve your business. We discuss how to take advantage of the marketing opportunities that it opens up, and how you can advertise it on your website and social media to help differentiate yourself from your competitors. Also, if used correctly it can help you increase your sales and credibility. Please don’t overlook this “piece of paper” as some people call it, just because you heard it isn’t required. Take the time to look into getting certified today and invest in yourself and your team to expand your knowledge. 18 May 2020 | Episode 98: Mitch Katz - Land of Elite: Why Systems, Processes, and Coaching are Key to Making Progress | 01:22:30
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Mitch Katz who is the General Manager at Land of Elite and the current President of NESPA. We first met Mitch in Atlantic City at the Pool and Spa Show in 2019 and knew that we had to have him on the show. We were excited that we were finally able to make it happen. Mitch shares his story with us about how he grew up in the family business and he learned from a young age the amount of grit it takes to run a business. After graduating from college Mitch knew he wanted to be involved in the business and has put that college education to use by integrating many new systems and processes. He even shares a few with us during the episode. He also helped start a pool service division for the company which has become successful as well. Land of Elite is a full service “design and build” company. They take on the whole project, mostly in house, which includes the swimming pool along with other things such as gardens, sidewalks, fences, patios, pizza ovens, and playscape or tennis courts. Pretty much any piece you can think of, they can do for their customers. This is pretty unique, as a lot of other companies would sub those out. They have built and continue to service many high-end elaborate pools over the years. We were very impressed by their portfolio. It was an honor for us to have Mitch on the podcast and we hope you enjoy his story as much as we did. 14 Sep 2020 | Episode 115: Pool Closings & Winterizations with Chas Bogardus of Budd’s Pools & Spas | 01:05:54
In this episode, we asked Chas Bogardus of Budd’s Pools & Spas back to discuss the pool closing season with us. Winterizations may not be something we deal with much here in Arizona, but we know a large portion of the country enters their closing season after Labor Day and we wanted to discuss them. Being from the New Jersey area and on the board of directors of NESPA, Chas has a ton of experience on this topic and has taught many pool closing classes over the years. When it comes to closing a pool, it is critical that it is done correctly so that the lines do not crack or burst when it gets to freezing temperatures. That’s why it is so important to understand what you are doing. Throughout the episode, we discuss Budd’s closing process, some best practices, common mistakes, balancing the water, blowing out lines, pool covers, scheduling, and more. Budd’s Pools & Spas began with the vision of one man, Herb Budd, Jr. He founded the company fresh out of college in 1958, working side by side with his wife Phyllis. That same year, Budd’s Pools & Spas became a member of the National Spa and Pool Institute, where Herb later served as one of the National Directors. With continued service and dedication, Herb and Phyllis grew Budd’s Pools & Spas to become an award-winning business, highly respected by its peers in the industry. In 1998, Budd’s Pools & Spas became one of 13 pool and spa dealers nationwide to be inducted into the AQUA 100 HALL OF FAME. The Aqua 100 Hall of Fame recognizes companies selected as the top 100 Pool and Spa dealers in the industry for five or more consecutive years.
