The Pubcast is a critical look at the surreal chaos of British politics. Mixing the Westminster drama and gossip with the soul-crushing reality of life in Modern Britain.

You’ll hear from distinguished thinkers and slightly less-distinguished politicians.

And PoliticsJOE's take on all of it, via the dulcet tones of Oli Dugmore, Ava Santina, and Ed Campbell.

22 Jul 2023Another round: Why capitalism doesn't need democracy with Quinn Slobodian00:31:10

In Liz Truss' disasterous mini budget, she promised to rip up the so-called economic orthodoxy, slashing taxes, in an effort to make Britain a country more like Singapore - but one where you're allowed to chew gum.

The ideas that Liz Truss was so determined to implement can be found in practice all over the world: in zones where capital can run unburdened, free from the limits of pesky, old democracy. And, the British right are still looking to them for inspiration.

Ed Campbell explores the story of these zones in this interview with professor and author Quinn Slobodian.

29 Jul 2023Another round: The problem with George Monbiot's solution to the climate crisis00:45:38

Recent crises have exposed the weaknesses of globalisation and its hyper-extended supply chains. These shocks will only increase in frequency as climate change further destabilises the planet, inducing famines and the mass movement of people escaping extreme weather events.

Human activity is the root cause of these problems - including the industrialised way in which we farm.

Chris Smaje proposes agrarian localism as a radical alternative: the construction of many, many small-holdings across the UK, with enough land to grow food and raise livestock for the people that live in them.

28 Oct 2023Another round: Life in Gaza and the West Bank 01:11:05

We’ve all seen the horrifying images of death and destruction that have emerged out of Israel and Palestine.

Hamas’ launching of 5,000 rockets into Southern Israel on October 7th sparked a flashpoint in a region with a long and complex history.

A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy recounts the road accident that took the life of Abed’s five-year-old son, Milad, and five other Palestinian children. In the aftermath, Abed’s search for his son sees him navigate the travel restrictions placed on Palestinians within Israel.

Oli interviews Abed, and the book's author Nathan Thrall, an American journalist, living in Jerusalem, whose reporting and analysis of Israel has been cited on the floor of the UN General Assembly and in the UN Security Council.

In doing so, a concise image is painted of the territories and boundaries within which we can place the current, unfolding events.
