From Pod Theory to Solo Podcasting Simplified: The Return (and Rebrand) of a Podcast
00:11:06
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: We. Are. BACK!
That's right, the podcast formerly known as Pod Theory is back with a fresh name and a simplified approach.
This...is Solo Podcasting Simplified! And I'm dedicated to bringing you the very best in tips, strategy, and commentary to help you become the best solo podcaster in the game.
Solo podcasting presents a number of benefits, including recording on your own schedule and shining the spotlight brightly on your expertise alone.
This podcast will cover all of that and a ton more as new episodes go live.
In case you caught the brief rebrand of this podcast to Podcast Guesting Simplified and are wondering what the hell is happening...give this bonus episode a listen and you'll get an explanation.
Additionally, this episode lays out my vision for Solo Podcasting Simplified and tells you exactly what you can expect when the podcast is officially relaunched.
It feels good to be back. Did you miss me? 😃
Thank you for being part of the Podcast Theory experience! Past seasons of this podcast include:
Season 1: 125 episodes of podcasting tips and strategies (known as Pod Theory) Season 2: Debunking Myths & Misconceptions of Podcasting (known as Pod Theory) Season 3: A Deep Look at Solo Podcasting (known as Solo Podcasting Simplified) Season 4: Ongoing episodes from livestreams that take place Tuesdays and Thursdays on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook
Of the millions of podcasts currently in existence on planet earth (both active as well as no longer producing content), the vast majority of them were built with the popular format of hosts welcoming guests onto their show for impactful conversation.
This approach, of course, has its benefits:
Guests help split the dialogue so the host doesn’t have to do all the talking
Guests bring a new layer of insight and perspective to each episode
Guests give you an opportunity to tap into a new audience (as long as they share the content once it’s live)
But often times, podcasters overlook some of the disadvantages of featuring guests on their show. Including, but not limited to:
The guest will be the featured thought leader for each episode
Finding guests and preparing for interviews can be time-consuming
Guests may go silent after your recording and do nothing to help you promote once it’s live
My belief is this: since the majority of podcasts are built with a host-guest dynamic, new podcasters feel this is the best (maybe even the only) way to produce their soon-to-launch show.
And I get it. It’s a template that’s worked for years and it makes sense.
But what it really comes down to is your overall brand objectives.
Do you want to be the go-to thought leader that people in search of the transformation you know you can deliver turn to?
Do you want to use your podcast to build an unbreakable bond with your listeners, giving them an outlet to establish trust in you and your message?
Do you want more freedom and flexibility in your podcast production initiatives?
Then producing a solo podcast is the only way to fly!
In the world premiere episode of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm going to share some of the undeniable benefits of solo podcasting, as well as set the table for what you'll learn and discover as future episodes of this podcast go live.

Solo Content vs. Guest Content: Which Approach Is Better?
00:19:17
Does solo podcast content trump guest-driven content?
It's the great debate.
Which form of content creation is better: solo-based content that keeps the spotlight firmly secured on you and your expertise or guest-driven content where impactful conversations captivate listeners?
Saying one is BETTER than the other without context is pretty difficult because each approach serves a purpose.
For example, if you're brand new to your industry/space/niche and want to boost your notoriety, collaborating with like-minded thought leaders in your arena will help you do so at a faster pace.
You also get access to that thought leader's audience and, hopefully, that additional exposure will put a few more eyes and ears on your initiatives going forward.
On the flip side, if you want to firmly position yourself as a thought leader that people seeking insight on your area of expertise can turn to, keeping the focus solely on yourself with solo podcast content may be the better way to go.
Your podcast may not feature a back-and-forth on a particular subject due to the lack of guests. But you can make up for that by confidently delivering an impactful message for your audience to learn from.
This, in turn, helps you establish a stronger level of trust and connection with every listener that presses the play button.
In Episode 002 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm taking a look at both sides of the equation - what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of solo podcast content, as well as guest-driven content...and when does it make sense to lean into one or the other?

3 Bulletproof Ways to Speak With Confidence As a Solo Podcaster
00:22:27
How important is it to speak with confidence?
Very.
Confidence is everything!
Think about it...
When's the last time you bought something off someone who didn't have the confidence to fully explain what you were investing in?
When's the last time you were persuaded by a public speaker who had no confidence in their ability to deliver their message?
When's the last time you believed your kid when they told you with a shaky, unconfident voice they didn't eat the rest of the cookies when you weren't looking?
When you speak with confidence and project your message with power, it draws people in and keeps them engaged in what you have to say.
The solo podcast stage presents a phenomenal platform for telling stories, sharing insight, and moving people who resonate with your message closer to the transformation they seek.
But if you fail to speak with confidence and get them fully invested in your philosophies, it's going to be extremely difficult to gain traction and establish yourself as a go-to resource in your niche.
Episode 003 of Solo Podcasting Simplified is all about gaining confidence in your content delivery and channeling that confidence to connect with your ideal listener in an undeniable way. I'll be sharing three bulletproof ways to speak with confidence and get the absolute most from each solo podcast episode you produce.

The Most Common Mistake Podcasters Make That You Can Avoid
00:23:41
It's inevitable that somewhere along the lines in your podcast journey, you're going to make some mistakes.
None of us are immune to it and no one in this space has built anything with absolute perfection.
And there's nothing wrong with that. Perfection is boring.
Mistakes aren't a bad thing...as long as you learn and grow from them.
But too often in the podcast space, those common mistakes are ones that lead to creators throwing in the towel far too soon. They let mistakes derail their efforts and they bail before any true growth is felt or real breakthrough experienced.
The numbers don't lie.
According to a thread on Reddit:
90% of podcasts don't get beyond the 3rd episode
To be in the top 1% of podcasts in the world, you only need to publish 21 episodes of your podcast
Those are scary statistics.
But they're also reassuring statistics for podcasters like you who are ready to proceed with reasonable expectations and a strong plan of action for growth, consistency, and success.
You may have heard people say the podcast medium is oversaturated or there are too many podcasts in their niche to stand out.
But in reality, the number of podcasts producing new content consistently is a small fraction of the total number of podcasts listed.
And, most importantly, no other podcast on the planet features your unique story, your unique perspective, and your unique way of making connections and bringing value to someone's life.
While others are making mistakes and letting it deflate their ego, you're learning from yours and capitalizing on each one so your next production is poised to make you stand out.
On Episode 004 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I break down some of the most common podcasting mistakes creators make with their show. I also share my thoughts on a mistake myself, along with many podcast creators and producers, are making today as we speak.

If you've ever read Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, you're fully aware how much stock the great author and thought leader puts in mastermind groups.
In fact, his belief in these groups is so strong, he feels anyone who strays from the power built within said mastermind is destined to fail.
As the legend states:
“Maintain perfect harmony between yourself and every member of your mastermind group. If you fail to carry out this instruction to the letter, you may expect to meet with failure. The master mind principle cannot obtain where perfect harmony does not prevail.”
According to The Success Alliance, mastermind groups offer a combination of brainstorming, education, peer accountability, and support to sharpen your business and personal skills.
A mastermind group helps you and your mastermind group members achieve success. Members challenge each other to set strong goals, and more importantly, to accomplish them.
There's no question that training has gravitated more towards the group setting in today's world as collective groups working with synergy have proven to produce tangible results for those involved and engaged.
Strength in community and having consistent support and encouragement cannot be overlooked.
That's why I built The Solo Podcaster's Mastermind.
In Episode 005 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I provide an inside look at The Solo Podcaster's Mastermind and give you all the reasons in the world to join! Throughout this episode, I'll explain the aspects that make up the mastermind, the skills you'll take away, and how we'll work together to get your podcast launched or retuned within 60 days.
PLEASE NOTE: I have closed The Solo Podcaster's Mastermind.

4 Impactful Ways Coaches Can Stand Out With a Solo Podcast
00:21:35
If you're a coach or consultant, you spend a great deal of time providing assistance, guidance, and motivation to your audience.
And that audience most likely consists of people in your inner circle - the ones who've taken the step towards investing monetarily in your knowledge and expertise - as well as your those who are part of your ecosystem, but haven't yet made any sort of financial investment in your guidance.
Both serve as tremendous assets to your brand and speaking to each entity with clarity and confidence will strengthen your relationship with existing customers and clients while building trust with potential ones as you move them closer to the transformation they seek.
Solo podcasting can serve as a key catalyst for relaying your message and establishing strong relationships that grow your brand. This method of content creation should not be overlooked by any coach or consultant due to the effectiveness each episode carries with it.
In Episode 006 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I share four impactful ways you can use this the solo podcasting approach to your advantage and turn your podcast into a primary resource in your coaching and consulting business.

Niche Down 'til It Hurts: Why You Need to Be Laser-Focused With Your Content
00:17:48
The digital landscape you and I exist in today is filled with a plethora of answers and information as far as the eye can see.
What's good about this is the fact that answers are always at our fingertips.
What's bad is it can get incredibly difficult to filter through the minutia of content thrust upon us to find relevant information that resonates and brings game-changing wisdom into our lives.
If you're a coach or consultant who's adding content to the mix in any capacity, it's incredibly important not to get lost in the aforementioned minutia and, instead, generate content that serves a specific purpose and connects with people when they intentionally search for it.
Let's break that down...
Simply posting a link to your most recent podcast episode, blog post, etc. on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. will do little to bring new listeners over to your show...as you may have experienced.
With the sheer amount of content that's being spilled on to social media simultaneously, it can be next to impossible to even get your posts seen...let alone have them break someone free of their 'scroll hole' to listen to your podcast.
But if you build content for a specific purpose that's aimed at a specific person looking to solve a specific problem AND you build it in a way that's SEO-friendly and easy to discover when intentional search is conducted, your chances of making a genuine connection and gaining a loyal follower/listener/viewer/reader increases dramatically.
When you DO make connections on social media, your first step should be to move the conversation to a channel where you have more control (i.e., an email list).
And you have a much better chance of making that happen if you give your new connection exactly what they're looking for.
This can be accomplished with a solo podcast, but the philosophy of niching down, providing more focused content, and leaning into an area of specialization transcends the podcast medium and should be applied to everything you do.
In Episode 007 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I break down why getting laser-focused with your solo podcast content, as well as the products and services you provide your customers, will help you cut through the noise and stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

Podcast Therapy: Success In Podcasting Begins With Mindset
00:09:51
Why do so many podcasters fail?
There are a number of factors that can contribute to a podcaster pulling the plug on their show in the very early stages.
Many times, new podcasters enter the fray with unrealistic expectations about podcasting being easy and the whole world showing up to listen just because a new episode was published.
In addition, new podcasters often get fixated on download metrics and believe this is the only way to gauge success for their show.
Sometimes, podcasters get overwhelmed with the amount of work it takes to manage and maintain a podcast, meaning they didn't properly plan time into their schedule to carry out the tasks of production, communication, and promotion.
And in some instances, new podcast creators venture too far outside their zone of genius and try to create content that doesn't excite them or doesn't speak to their target audience, causing them to become disengaged, burnt out, and unhappy with the act of creating new content.
These are just a few potential reasons why someone may abandon their podcast efforts...
...and each of these items could've been avoided if these creators took time to establish a winning mindset before they ever pressed record.
Episode 008 of Solo Podcasting Simplified features your first dose of Podcast Therapy! I'll be airing these therapy sessions weekly to help you with various aspects of podcasting. In the premiere installment, I'm zeroing in on what I feel is the most important element of successful podcasting: establishing the right mindset.

What is the Ideal Length For a Solo Podcast Episode?
00:18:05
How long should a podcast episode be?
If you've been looking for a question that has a myriad of answers, this is the one.
When you look at the number of podcasts actively producing content today, it's hard to pinpoint a specific timeframe because all of them are so different.
Some podcasts clock in around five minutes.
Others go 2-3 hours.
According to The Social Shepard website, the average podcast length is 20-40 minutes.
OK, so how do you make sense of this wide range of times and determine what works for your solo podcast?
It's not as complicated as it may seem.
In reality, there are just two key factors to focus on that will help you create content your ideal listeners want to consume without putting you in a position to break your back trying to keep up with a laborious production schedule.
In Episode 009 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm sharing the ideal length for your solo podcast productions, as well as debunking some of the common misconceptions about podcast episode length you've most likely encountered.

Here's Why I'm Breaking Up With Social Media (For Now)
00:17:37
Social media has woven itself into the fabric of society.
At this point in time, is it even possible to imagine a world without it?
The sheer connectivity networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. have brought to our lives cannot be overlooked, overshadowed, or under-appreciated.
I've been part of the social media vortex since the early 2000s since MySpace wasn't just a thing, it was the thing.
Hell, if you go back into the late 90s (yes, I'm totally dating myself here), I was all over the trailblazing outlets like Yahoo! Chat, AOL Instant Messenger, and ICQ. Those platforms may not have been considered social "media," but they certainly served as a precursor to the far more cutting-edge, innovative networks we inhabit today.
Over the years, I've leaned into social media heavily.
From extolling its virtues through a small social media marketing company I operated with my best friend to once claiming you don't need a website if you have a strong social media presence on a podcast (crazy, right?) to leveraging it in a variety of ways both personally and professionally, social media has been a major part of my life.
So why, after all this time and all this love for the world of social media, have I made the decision to break up with these platforms?
In Episode 010 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I share why I've made the decision to break up with social media and focus my attention where it can best serve you. I also share some commentary on the state of social media and why this is the right time for me to make this move.

Podcast Therapy: The Truth About Consistency In Podcasting Revealed
00:11:43
Consistency is vital to success in podcasting.
The more consistent you are with content creation, actively communicating with listeners, and having compelling, captivating conversations with guests (when and if you feature guests), the more well-rounded podcaster you'll become.
You'll also develop and hone skills that transfer to other aspects of your life, including but not limited to how you communicate with friends, colleagues, clients, and loved ones, and how you present your message on stage, on conference calls, and in virtual and in-person meetings.
But consistency in podcasting doesn't just refer to a commitment to mastering your craft.
Consistency is also about being there for your audience when you say you'll be.
When you bring new content to your audience on a consistent basis, they will not only get more invested in the content you produce, but they'll begin working this content into their routine.
For example, if you publish new episodes every Thursday, a loyal listener will use their time at the gym or on their morning commute to consume your latest release.
They expect it. And when it's not there, they will find something else to fill the void.
When that happens, you run the risk of losing that listener and it may be hard to get them back simply because they only have so many hours a week to dedicate to podcast consumption.
Maintaining consistency will keep listeners in place and continue to establish a high level of trust with each of them.
But it's also important to understand that consistency in podcasting does not mean you need to overextend yourself and let burnout creep into the equation.
Episode 011 of Solo Podcasting Simplified features the next installment in the Podcast Therapy series and I'm revealing the truth about consistency in podcasting.

The Important Pieces of the Solo Podcasting Puzzle You Can't Ignore with Mickey Anderson
00:35:25
Having a podcast is great. The value it brings to your brand cannot be overlooked or ignored.
The connection you build with current and potential clients is profound and each episode you publish provides further social proof that you're a true thought leader in your niche that people can learn from.
You also have an amazing opportunity to connect with fellow like-minded professionals, thus amplifying your reach and expanding your network.
A podcast serves as a consistent, reliable content distribution channel that allows you to effectively project your message to a targeted audience and communicate how you can help them achieve the transformation they seek.
The content found within your podcast can be repurposed and utilized on other channels, such as websites, blogs, YouTube, and social media.
This, in turn, fuels the growth of your brand presence and moves you closer to closing new business, thus fueling more growth, and so on, and so on.
And when your podcast is of the solo variety (meaning you're the primary voice on the majority of episodes delivering value, wisdom, and transformative insight), listeners who resonate with your message will feel the impact from you...and you alone.
Building a solo podcast directly related to your brand and leveraging the content you create to the fullest extent is going to provide you with a bona fide path to connectivity with current and potential customers the likes of which you've never experienced.
That type of impact is impossible to exclude from your overall brand-building strategy.
In Episode 012 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm proud to share the mic with this podcast's first guest, the Marketing Closer herself, Mickey Anderson.
Mickey is a wealth of knowledge on content strategy, marketing concepts, and how to best use solo content to position yourself as a resource your industry needs.
Join Mickey and I for an in-depth conversation about:
Solo podcast strategy
How to use solo content to position yourself as a thought leader
The value a podcast adds to your brand

If you listened to Episode 012 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, you know my guest, Mickey Anderson, and I spent our entire conversation unpacking strategies for leveraging a solo podcast within your brand.
And by far, one of the most important aspects we focused on was utilizing your website to feature your podcast content.
Or, building a separate website 100% dedicated to your podcast production.
Why is this so important?
We discussed a variety of reasons:
The SEO benefits
The value podcast content adds to your website
The value podcast content adds to your overall brand should you ever choose to exit your business
Podcasting has evolved beyond just being an audio format.
The content found within your podcast can be extracted and used to provide impact and transformation to people who discover you, but may not necessarily listen to podcasts.
Today, podcast content is often discovered through search engines like Google and YouTube on a daily basis.
And if you don't optimize your content for discoverability through your website, you're leaving huge opportunity and a great deal of potential money on the table.
In this episode of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm diving deeper into the importance of leveraging your website to showcase your podcast content and sharing some tips to help you make it happen with ease.

Podcast Therapy: Why Do People Love Podcasts So Much?
00:11:01
The reasons why people love podcasts is pretty subjective.
For starters, they could get attached to the host and tune in every episode just to hear what he or she has to say.
Perhaps the podcast features valuable guests you don't want to miss.
Maybe it's because every time they listen, they learn something new that can be implemented into their life on a personal or professional level.
Hell, it could be because a podcast allows for an escape from their everyday life...even if for a few minutes.
It could be any of these reasons or something completely different, but there's one common denominator that makes podcasts such an important part of people's lives:
Podcasts are passive.
That means podcasts can be consumed without one having their full attention dedicated to said consumption.
You can put on a podcast and take a walk, get in a workout, make your morning or afternoon commute more enjoyable, even get some chores around the house completed.
All while swinging to the sweet sounds of your favorite podcast content provider.
Podcasts play a meaningful role in people's lives because they enjoy the content while partaking in something else they enjoy.
Or, at the very least, a solid podcast can make the not-so-enjoyable moments a little bit easier to stomach.
This is why you can't ignore bringing a podcast into your business practices. The connections you build are too powerful to forego.
In this episode of Solo Podcasting Simplified, it's another installment of Podcast Therapy and, just like the title suggests, I'll be sharing why people love podcasts so much, as well as why you can't ignore building a podcast of your own based on that love affair.

Is Podcasting the New SOCIAL Media? | Podcast Theory Live 6.10.24
00:14:38
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE FROM 6.10.24
It's no secret the face of "social" media has changed.
Today, networks like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others have become ad and algorithm-driven, making it increasingly difficult to maintain social standards once championed and rewarded by these platforms. Oftentimes, it's hard to even tell if you're connecting with a real person or a bot dead set on scamming you.
With podcasting, you always know you're connecting with a real person and, when value is front of mind with all parties involved, the opportunities for relationships to spark and big ideas to unfold is elevated in spades.
If you ask me, podcasting has become the new SOCIAL media of our world and brands, businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals at all levels need to make it part of their communication structure.
This is the debut installment of Podcast Theory Live and I couldn't think of a better topic to tackle as I get this new series off the ground.

5 Things I've Learned About Livestreaming So Far | Podcast Theory Live 6.11.24
00:15:00
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE FROM 6.11.24
I came into 2024 knowing I wanted to make livestreaming a part of my production process...I just wasn't sure where it would fit and how I should proceed.
Where I landed was doing a weekly livestream called Let's Blow This Up Live, an extension of my new podcast, aptly named Let's Blow This Up.
I immediately fell in love with the process of livestreaming and knew I needed more!
Hence, Podcast Theory Live, the very livestream you're consuming as we speak, was born.
Now, admittedly, I'm still new at this. Yes, I've been podcasting for nearly a decade, but going live on a consistent basis is still a new venture (Let's Blow This Up Live started May 8th, 2024, just a tad over a month removed from the production of today's daily livestream).
In no way, shape, or form am I an expert...but I've definitely learned a few things to this point that I'd like to share.
Perhaps it's JUST the piece of advice you need to hear to get your own livestream up and running. ____________________________________

Are You Maximizing Your Podcast Experience? | Podcast Theory Live 6.12.24
00:20:36
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 6.12.24
When you hear the term 'podcasting,' what comes to mind?
For many, it's the act of creating audio content that's shared through apps like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, and more.
While that answer is indeed accurate, podcasts have evolved and offer so much more that often gets overlooked by creators AND those who leverage the medium to make guest appearances.
In Episode 3 of Podcast Theory Live, I'm diving into how you can maximize the time you put into your podcast and get the most from your efforts, whether you're producing your own podcast or bringing your knowledge and expertise to the mic as a guest.

Stop Dropping the Ball With Connection & Outreach | Podcast Theory Live 6.13.24
00:15:06
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 6.13.24
Guess what? Not everyone needs your shit.
Guess what else? Not everyone needs MY shit.
As hard as it may be to accept, the whole world did not wake up this morning needing exactly what you have to offer.
Nor does any podcaster need to bring you on their show as a guest because you explain to them how much success you've achieved.
One of the biggest issues plaguing the digital world is connection and outreach. There are too many people "pitch slapping" others from jump, taking no time to get to know an individual, discovering what's working for them and what isn't, and seeing if they truly have a solution that can help solve their specific problem.
Likewise, many aspiring podcast guests are focusing too much on their own accomplishments and accolades instead of letting podcasters know why they believe their show aligns with their mission and message.
I firmly believe the best way to cut through the noise in today's world is to be a genuine human. It's less stressful and will lead to far better results at the end of the day.
In this installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm sharing what I've been experiencing in this arena lately and why it's important to bring a humanistic approach to connection, outreach, and overall communication.

A podcast guest can add tremendous value to your show.

Yep, this happened to me once...and it immediately made me realize my mistake.
In this installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm kicking off a 5-part series where I share some of the crazy stories that I've experienced in my near-decade in the podcast industry.

Here's How I Learned Listener Experience Is EVERYTHING | Podcast Theory Live 6.26.24
00:14:05
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 6.26.24
There's an unwritten rule in podcasting that stands above the rest: Listener Experience is EVERYTHING.
If you aren't respecting the experience you provide for your listeners, chances are they won't be your listeners for long.
You only have one chance to make a good impression in this space and, as more podcasts become readily available for people to consume, that belief is even more prevalent.
In order to capture your listener's attention, you need to deliver a quality product...
A lesson I learned in a very painful way.
In this installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm telling TWO stories where I completely neglected listener experience.
But when I went to edit the episodes, it hit me how important this aspect of podcasting truly is.

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 6.27.24
If you've ever been a guest on a podcast, you've more than likely been asked some questions that simply didn't jive with you.
Perhaps they made you completely uncomfortable...
Or maybe they were just plain out of bounds and the host didn't care.
Or...perhaps the host asked you THE WORST question you can get when you're a guest on a podcast because it reveals they did NO preparation for your collaboration.
In this installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm telling the story about the time I was asked what is easily my least favorite question as a podcast guest.
If you're a host or aspire to be one, DON'T. DO. THIS.

REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 6.28.24
Ask any podcaster who's been at this for a while and, more than likely, they've experienced the story I'm telling today in some way, shape, or form.
In today's installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm wrapping up my 5-part series of wild and crazy experiences I've had in the podcast space and this one...it's a doozy.
Well, maybe "doozy" is too strong a word...
Or a word I shouldn't be using at all because, well, it's stupid...
But I will say it's a fundamental step every podcaster needs to be aware of and, once you make the mistake once, you find a way to NEVER make it again.
Enjoy! ____________________________________

5 Big Takeaways From The Inaugural Empowered Podcasting Conference | Podcast Theory Live 7.1.24
00:25:56
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.1.24
The first-ever Empowered Podcasting Conference went down June 28th thru June 30th with podcasters, creators, and livestreamers from around the world coming together in Charlotte, NC.
The event was a true testament of community and the knowledge and wisdom that was shared throughout the weekend has the podcast world buzzing.
I was part of the festivities, handling some emcee duties and moderating a panel discussion on how podcasting is becoming a better version of social media.
Now that the event is in the history books, it's time to reflect on the weekend that was.
In this installment of Podcast Theory Live, I'm sharing five of my big takeaways from the inaugural Empowered Podcasting Conference.
Discover what you may have missed if you weren't in attendance or, if you WERE in attendance, relive some of the great things that took place in Charlotte. ____________________________________

Make the Main Thing the ONLY Thing | Podcast Theory Live 7.2.24
00:13:17
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.2.24
In podcasting, just like life, we often find ourselves focusing on too many things at once. When we do this, it spreads our bandwidth thin and we put less emphasis where it needs to be.
These overwhelming feelings are often the driving force behind those ugly words we hate to hear:
Depression.
Burnout.
Podfade.
Failure.
But let's take a moment to simplify things.
What if we just focused on ONE thing...the MAIN thing...and let everything else fall into place?
In this episode of Podcast Theory Live, I'm digging into the philosophy of focusing on one thing and making it the main thing...with a podcasting spin, of course!
Credit where credit's due: Alex Sanfilippo, Founder of PodMatch, spoke about this during his presentation at the Empowered Podcasting Conference and his point resonated very strongly with me.
No matter what your main thing is, make sure it's front and center with everything you do. ____________________________________

3 Ways to Avoid Podfade Like a Podcast Pro | Podcast Theory Live 7.8.24
00:25:42
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.8.24
One of the biggest epidemics in the podcast space is podfade (when a show's creator stops releasing new content out of the blue with no announcement).
A recent statistic that was shared in one of my communities is that a whopping 90% of podcasters don't get beyond their THIRD episode.
That's a total shame. Especially when you consider the creators of these shows most likely had a ton of energy and a ton of passion for bringing their podcast to the world.
But once the work began and a million listeners didn't flood in, the passion waned.
Of course, you and I both realize those are unrealistic expectations. But often times, podcasters and creators can get too fixated on the wrong metrics, losing sight of why they started their podcast in the first place.
Today on Podcast Theory Live, I'm going to dive into the subject of podfade and share three ways it can be avoided like the plague.
If you want to succeed in podcasting, a commitment to building your show and your skills over time is imperative.

What Would I Do Differently If I Was Starting Podcasting Fresh Today? | Podcast Theory Live 7.9.24
00:21:51
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.9.24
I've been part of the podcasting world in one way, shape, or form since 2015 and, without question, I've seen a lot of things change, evolve, even go away completely.
Yesterday, I was building out a new video series and reflecting on how far I've come over the past decade in regards to confidence, delivery, speaking ability, and sharing my message in a clear, concise fashion.
It got me wondering: if I was coming into podcasting right now, for the very first time, what would I do differently today that I didn't do 10 years ago?
On this episode of Podcast Theory Live, I'm going to share my thoughts. If you're in the position of getting a new podcast launched or just broke into the podcasting scene, come learn from my mistakes so you can do things better than me! ____________________________________

Let's Remove the Unneeded Element of Perfection From Podcasting | Podcast Theory Live 7.10.24
00:14:48

With many things in life, the pursuit of perfection will derail us early in the game or, because perfection seems unattainable, prevents us from taking the initial steps to getting started.
I've got news for you: perfection IS unattainable. And thinking you can produce a perfect podcast is a fool's errand.
Today on Podcast Theory Live, I'm sharing my thoughts on perfection in the podcast space and why we need to do our part to make it go away.
I'll also share how livestreaming has helped me lean into this belief even more - leading me to embrace some of the flaws and work harder to communicate a clear message to my audience.

Podcast Therapy: Showing Up For All The Right Reasons | Podcast Theory Live 7.12.24
00:21:40
REPLAY OF PODCAST THEORY LIVE 7.12.24
It's the return of Podcast Therapy!
In Season 3, I started doing these sessions once a week and I'm happy to report this series is making a comeback.
In today's installment, I'm going to talk about why it's important to show up to your podcast for all the right reasons.
If you haven't heard my story, I got into podcasting out of spite. I had a troll confront me on Twitter who happened to be a podcaster and I wanted to prove I could do it better than him.
I have no idea what I thought I was going to accomplish with that mindset, but I was incredibly fortunate to discover my calling...partially by accident.
Almost 10 years later and I'm still going strong, leaning into podcasting and livestreaming pretty much every day of the week. ____________________________________

You Will NEVER Stop Podcasting at 3 Episodes After Hearing This
00:21:38
Depending on what website you land on or podcast you listen to, you're more than likely going to encounter some very ugly statistics about podcast launch success rates.
The one I've grabbed hold of recently states that 90% of new podcasts DON'T GET BEYOND THREE EPISODES!!!
This...is simply unacceptable. And it's time for a reality check.
If you want to utilize the podcast medium for your business, you need to be strategic and set yourself up for long-term success.
I have a pretty good idea why that aforementioned statistic exists and I'm sharing my thoughts on how BRUTALLY EASY it is to blow that number out of the water on this episode of Podcast Theory.
If seeing numbers like that has soured your thoughts on podcasting or put you in a holding pattern on getting your own show off the ground, you need to consume this episode and discover how you can end up on the right side of the statistics.
Get ready...this is a message you DON'T want to miss. ____________________________________

Yes, It's Easy to Start a Podcast. But It's Hard to Do This...
00:15:31
I've been getting inundated with an ad on Facebook and Instagram lately and I'm sure the reason why is because I watch it in disgust every time it pops up. Basically, I'm telling the algorithm I want to watch straight up garbage.
But that's a story for another day.
This ad starts out "Starting a podcast is easy!"
And, yes...I'll admit...STARTING a podcast IS easy.
But what happens once you start is what truly tells the story of what you'll accomplish with your show.
On this episode of Podcast Theory, I'm spending a few minutes talking about what REALLY matters once you get your podcast off the ground.
It's not just about getting started. It's about bringing longevity into play. Click play to learn more!

Make Your Podcast Guest Pitch Better In 30 Seconds. Step 1...
00:23:28
If you're a podcaster, I'm sure you'll agree with me: the majority of podcast guest pitches (or presentations) SUCK.
In surround sound. With the volume turned all the way up.
Leaning into podcast guesting is a great way to grow your brand, spread the word about your podcast, showcase expertise, and position yourself for increased visibility.
But if you don't land the guest spot because your guest pitch isn't on point, you'll never experience any of those (plus many more) benefits.
In this episode of Podcast Theory, I'm covering where professionals looking for guest spots on podcasts are missing the mark and how you can improve YOUR pitch to secure more appearances that will elevate your brand.
Having a better understanding of what you need to say and how you should approach podcast hosts you want to collaborate with will lead to much better results. Period. ____________________________________

Since first becoming a thing over 20 years ago, podcasts have evolved in numerous ways. From methods of production to repurposing to actual content that makes up the shows you love, creators have embarked on a wild journey to connect you to their brands through this incredible, constantly-growing medium.
As you put your content together, there are some items you may hear on other podcasts that you want to include...and, just as much, some items you don't.
Over the course of the next five episodes of Podcast Theory, I'm going to share some items you've undoubtedly heard on other podcasts (or potentially included in your own production) and let you know why your podcast will better serve your listeners if you DON'T include these things going forward.
In this episode, you'll discover how you can get your listeners to the heart of your content in a fast, efficient way while saving yourself time as well.
Attention spans (or the lack thereof) are incredibly important to keep in mind as you put your content together for your brand. You want to ensure your target customers hear the right things.
But if they lose focus because you aren't getting to the right things fast enough, all is lost. ____________________________________

In Part 1 of this 5-part series, I shared some scary numbers regarding the attention span of adults in 2024 and why this is important for podcast creators to consider when laying out their content.
I'm building upon those points in Part 2 today as I share another item your podcast episodes don't need and, ultimately, diminishes your listener's experience if you do it too much.
This particular item can:
- Put more work on your plate - Take more time than it's worth - Make things awkward for your guest - Accomplish more if the guest does it themselves ____________________________________

Want to know the most annoying word on a podcast? Then this episode of Podcast Theory is for you!
This is Part 3 of 5 in my series "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" and today, I'm covering another item that keep your listener from getting to the heart of your content once they click play.
If you listened to Parts 1 & 2 in this series, you discovered that attention spans are at an all-time low for adults (clocking in at a whopping 8.25 seconds).
With that number in mind, getting your listener to the main reason they clicked play on your podcast episodes is at an all-time high.
In this episode, you'll discover something that can easily be removed from your production and, if need be, used in a better way to keep your listeners invested until they reach the end of your episode. ____________________________________

The "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" series rolls on and today, in Part 4, we are taking a slight detour away from the attention spans of your listeners and focusing on an item that many podcasts feature, but don't necessarily need.
As podcasting has evolved, many things have changed and become available to this medium. One of them is the ease in which we can access podcast content on our devices.
Back in the day, the term "PODcast" was literal because you uploaded "internet radio episodes" to your iPod and consumed at will. This was a newfangled thing (as was downloading music onto a portable rectangle), and many shows featured the word "podcast" so people knew what they were accessing.
Today, the question needs to be asked: Does the word "podcast" still need to be used?
I'm exploring this and more in today's episode. Enjoy!

Are you truly ready to jump in the deep end of the pool and launch a podcast that will help stimulate the growth of your brand?
The answer should be yes. BUT, if you want your podcast to succeed and not be like one of those shows that flatlines before you even have a chance to subscribe, it's important to build a solid foundation on which your podcast can grow for years.

There are many, many podcasts out there right now that never made it to first base. They may be sitting there with one published episode...or, possibly NO published episodes. Some podcasts come out strong for the first few months, then consistency falls off a cliff and, eventually, new episodes vanish completely.
There are a lot of reasons why podcasts fail to gain any momentum, and on Episode 5 of Pod Theory, I'm going to dive into why and YOU'RE INVITED to hear all about it.
The idea is to not fall into the failure category and take the necessary steps to ensure your podcast succeeds. And that starts with planning. Stop and listen - more details inside.

In the early 2000s, EVERYONE had a blog. It took the Internet by storm. And, like most web-based platforms, brands and businesses found a way to leverage blogs as a means of communicating with their audience. Much like Facebook and Twitter, which were used for entirely different purposes when they launched, blogs became a focal point of content strategies for companies small and large - providing an online destination where news, product info, and industry innovations could be shared in full detail with the click of a button.
Fast forward to 2020 and what's all the rage? Podcasting. 'Starting a podcast' is the new 'starting a blog,' and people, brands, and businesses are embracing podcasting as the hottest and most effective medium for connecting with consumers. In fact, many blogs are used to house podcast content, thus making the actual blog an overall hub for communication and connectivity across the Internet.
Has podcasting replaced blogging? I'm going to analyze this question in Episode 6 of Pod Theory and provide some statistics that help answer this question.

Why Choosing a Topic You Love is Vital to Your Podcast Success
00:07:05
If you're like me, you can talk about things you love for hours and hours and never get sick of the sound of your own voice. For me, golf, hockey, fantasy football, beer, marketing, brand development, and, of course, podcasting, can keep me in true Energizer Bunny form...going and going and going.........
It's this mindset that often leads to the birth of a podcast. As well it should. If you're passionate about something, starting a podcast that allows you to exploit those feelings can truly become a fruitful venture. And when you're looking to amplify your brand's message, a podcast offers a solid platform in which to do so.
I'm willing to bet you love your brand. So showcasing that love on a podcast will help you build a content medium that stands the test of time.
In Episode 7 of Pod Theory, I'm going to dig into why choosing a topic you love is an absolutely critical element to your podcast's growth and longevity. The goal is to create something with long-term appeal, and basing your podcast on a subject that grips you will allow you to do just that while building a loyal audience seeking knowledge on your topic of choice.

3 Things That Will Keep You Going When Your Podcast Has No Listeners
00:06:34
Unless you're starting your podcast with an audience you've built through social media, an email list, blog, and/or another medium, your episodes will likely fall on deaf ears as you get things started. You need to build an audience. And while that's what your podcast is designed to do, it can get discouraging to see low download numbers when you've poured so much time and effort into getting your podcast launched.
Fear not, fellow podcaster! Podcasting, as well as starting fresh on any content medium, has its obstacles to overcome. If you take the necessary steps to build your audience, those numbers will eventually take off. And once they do, the sky's the limit.
In Episode 9 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share three things to keep in mind that will help keep your confidence up while numbers are lean and you work to build your audience.

00:09:44
You could probably rattle off a dozen things without blinking that you think you need to make your podcast succeed and, chances are, you'll be correct. BUT...I guarantee you're forgetting the one thing that all podcasters need in order to launch their show and cultivate an active, engaged audience.

Recommendations For Podcast Recording Equipment and Editing Software
00:09:02
Getting the right equipment for your podcast does not have to break the bank. In fact, there are several options at your disposal that are quite affordable and will allow you to produce studio-quality recordings for all of your episodes.
Same goes for editing software. You don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars to get a program that works.
In Episode 15 of Pod Theory, Jason Cercone provides some recommendations on recording equipment and editing software. Whether you're just getting started and need some direction on what to use or are looking to upgrade your current equipment and editor, this quick episode provides useful insight to help you on your plight.
NOTE: In this episode, I mention the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder not helping with long distance podcasting (or podcasts being recorded with Zoom, Skype, etc). This is not the case. If you have an H6 Handy Recorder, you can use it as your audio interface on your computer. The sound is phenomenal. I learned this after I recorded this episode. THE LESSON: Never stop learning new things.

Why You Need a Launch Strategy For the Debut of Your Podcast
00:08:13
Your podcast going live is a big deal! You need to celebrate that by going crazy with content releases when your show makes its world premiere.
Instead of just releasing one episode to lift the curtain on your show, it's better to release multiple episodes in order get listeners hooked on your podcast from their first listen, as well as give them a well-rounded view of what your show is all about AND set yourself up with more opportunities to get ratings and reviews.
Launching your podcast is huge and, in Episode 13, I'm going to tell you why - along with explaining the importance of having a solid launch strategy and executing said strategy to ensure your podcast comes to life in grand fashion. There's multiple reasons why this is important, and we'll get into those reasons today.

How Many Podcast Episodes Should You Record Before Launching Your Show?
00:09:34
Having a bank of episodes you can pull from when you need to release a new show is one of the best resources you can have. As I've mentioned on Pod Theory before, many podcasts fail because publishers don't have a plan in place. And a big part of that plan is batching content so you have a cushion when other priorities interrupt your podcasting schedule.
Batching content and having multiple episodes ready to deploy gives you flexibility and will help you remain consistent with new content releases.
On Episode 12 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share the importance of batching and give you an idea of how many episodes you should have completed and ready to release before you decide to officially launch your podcast.

If you are starting a personal brand podcast, it's obvious who will host your show: You.
However, if you are part of an organization that has multiple people who could fill that seat, it's important to find the right qualities in your podcast host so they represent your brand to the best of their ability.
In Episode 16 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some things you should be on the lookout for as you determine what personalities to feature on your brand podcast. If you've already determined that you yourself is going to host, these steps will help you find kick-ass co-hosts that will help bring your show to life.

We live in a world where reviews are everywhere. Seemingly every platform we use has some sort of review component built into it. And while reviews can provide an up close and personal look at a user's experience with a product or service, they only provide one point of view.
Are reviews important to podcasts? Yes. But do they tell the whole story? No.
On Episode 16 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why I feel reviews are important to your show, but they're just one of five elements that can grab a new listener and get them hooked on your show. If you focus on the first four of these elements, the good reviews will follow...and your podcast will grow and evolve.

A Simple Exercise For Coming Up With Fresh Content Ideas
00:06:31
New content ideas are the lifeblood of your podcast. Without fresh ideas to expand upon for upcoming shows, the results of your podcast will suffer and your publication consistency will take a drastic hit. Once your audience cannot rely on your episodes coming out when expected, they'll turn their attention to someone else's podcast.
On Episode 20 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share an insanely simple, no-brainer exercise that will ensure your content idea list never goes empty.

How You Can Avoid Falling Behind In Podcast Production
00:07:38
Getting off schedule in your podcast production is the last place you want to be. It's the first sign of things going off the rails and it won't be long before new episode releases get delayed. Before you know it, all the consistency you've built will be shot and your audience will turn their attention to another podcast.
Fortunately, if you commit to your schedule and put effort into your keeping everything on track, this is a pain you'll never have to feel.
In Episode 21 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some tips for how you can keep your schedule on point. It's all about using your time wisely, committing time to your podcast each week, and sticking to that time block no matter what. This episode dives into how you can make podcasting a priority in your weekly schedule of events and ensure you always stick to the schedule you put in place.

When it comes to show notes, you will find a variety of approaches from one podcaster to the next. Technically, there is no right or wrong answer to how you choose to use this important space (unless you don't do any notes at all and, thusly, cost yourself a tremendous opportunity with your listeners). But, there are some strategies you'll want to abide by to get the most from your show notes.
Should you write your notes short-form or long-form? What type of information should be included in your show notes? How critical are show notes to your podcast's success?
The answers to all this and more await you inside.
In Episode 22 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share four tips you can leverage to get stellar show notes. Additionally, I'm also going to talk about some basic guidelines you should follow to ensure your notes are impactful, act as the trailer to your podcast episode, and do their part to engage your listeners to the point they press the play button on your show.

With the popularity of podcasting continuing to surge, you'd think more brands would see this content platform as THE medium to jump on. And while some brands have indeed made this move, others are still hesitant.
And that's OK. Despite podcasting's growth and evolution, it still needs more time to gain the mainstream velocity that platforms like websites, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs did in years past. Remember when people thought Facebook was just for posting what you had for lunch? Well...even though a TON of food photos get posted every day, it's safe to say Facebook overcame that stigma.
In Episode 23 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some commentary on why more brands aren't starting podcasts right now, as we speak. I firmly believe this is the time for your brand to get on the podcasting bandwagon. Because eventually, everyone will. And when they do, you'll be ahead of the curve!

The Best Environments to Record a Podcast...and Ones To Avoid
00:07:13
The environment you choose to record your podcast can literally make or break your show. The last thing you want to do is produce a show with poor audio quality. This is a sure-fire way to lose listeners immediately.
On Episode 24, I'm going to talk about the best environments to record your podcast, as well as some you'll want to avoid. I'm also going to talk about the importance of not skimping on the microphones you use. That said, remember...even the most expensive podcasting equipment will not help you overcome recording in a low-quality environment.
What types of floors and walls should you avoid? Are there natural sound absorbers in your recording space that can help you manufacture dynamic sound? What can you do to eliminate distractions and background noise? Answers to these burning questions and more await you on Episode 24 of Pod Theory!

What's the first thing someone sees when they search for podcasts? Cover art!
Cover art is your podcast's first impression and can go a long way towards reeling in a new listener. If your cover art is dynamic, stands out against others found in a listener's search, and artistically paints a picture of what your podcast is all about, you have a great chance of aesthetically captivating a listener and getting them invested in your show.
On Episode 25 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share three ways for you to get exceptional, kick-ass podcast art that will make your show stand out. We're going to talk about how to create your design, what specifications you should follow to ensure your art meets the criteria of podcast directories, how you can make your design ideas come to life, and more!

Podcasts have many layers and multiple steps to make them come together. The beauty of all the legwork is this: once your podcast is complete, you have a living, breathing piece of content that can be utilized in multiple ways across the World Wide Web.
The best way to ensure your podcast grows over time is to make it accessible on as many platforms as possible. Naturally, your podcast host (and subsequent filtering to all podcast directories via your host) is prime real estate. But there are several other ways your content can attract listeners, such as videos, blog posts, and soundbites.
In Episode 26 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share six ways you can repurpose your podcast content and enhance your visibility across the 'net. When it's all said and done, your podcast will serve seven functions, thus increasing your show's potential for growth AND giving you a great way to work smarter, not harder.

An elevator pitch is a brief description of a product, a company, or an idea that fully encompasses the point you want to convey with a succinct delivery. The concept is that whoever you’re delivering it to will be able to comprehend the summary of your message without you needing to elaborate.
An elevator pitch is a great tool to have at networking functions and when meeting new people. In these settings, it’s difficult to go into long-form detail about what you do or a product you may be selling because people are mingling with others.
In Episode 27 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why your podcast needs an elevator pitch, too. This clear, concise, and easy-to-deliver message will be a great tool to have for spreading the word about your podcast in multiple ways.

What is the Unique Value Proposition of Your Podcast?
00:06:54
A value proposition is one of the most important elements in your brand message. It tells prospects why they should do business with you rather than your competitors and makes the benefits of your products or services crystal clear from the outset.
In other words, a unique value proposition is what makes you stand out against a myriad of competitors. It also lets customers know exactly what to expect from your brand when they choose to do business with you.
Much like your brand, your podcast should have a unique value proposition as well. This will relay the message to listeners exactly what your show is about, the value it offers, and why it stands out against the competition. Captured in a brief, succinct fashion, your value proposition will tell your listeners what they’ll accomplish when they listen to your show.
In Episode 28 of Pod Theory, I'm going to define what a unique value proposition for your podcast truly is, as well as help you construct yours citing examples and sharing an easy-to-follow 4-step process.

There's no denying how far podcasting has come. With over a million active episodes and counting and new listeners tuning in to podcasts each and every day, our medium has limitless potential. As does your show. That means you need to set your podcast up for success TODAY by effectively optimizing it for search engines so more potential listeners can find you.
On Episode 30 of Pod Theory, I am happy to bring you the show's first full-length interview. Today, I'm joined by Megan Pritts, Founder of Ducks In Rows Marketing, to talk about the importance of Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, for podcasts. Megan has collected over 10 years of marketing experience and launched her own company in 2019.
Also in 2019, Google emphasized the relevance and importance of podcasts by making them accessible through search. This means if someone searches for podcasts in your niche via Google, your show has the potential to rank in that query, thus boosting your show's visibility and opening up new avenues for people to find you. In order for this to happen, it's critical you adhere to time-tested SEO practices that Megan will be sharing with us today.
Episode 30 is loaded with knowledge bombs regarding keyword research, keyword placement, getting to know your audience, show note content and length, how to utilize supporting content, best practices to improve your overall search engine visibility, and more.

Should You Be Concerned About Your Podcast Episode Length?
00:06:06
In today's on-demand world, there are countless mediums pulling at our attention spans. Podcasts, videos, television, social media platforms, radio (both terrestrial and satellite)...there's so much out there to consume and only so many hours in the day to consume it.
When it comes to your podcast episode length, it's important to focus more on the quality of your content and not so much on how long the episode ends up being. Your audience will appreciate engaging material on your show versus you hitting some arbitrary time mark. This way, they'll have time to take in more content. And if you play your cards right, that content could be yours!
On Episode 31 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share my thoughts on podcast episode length and why I feel your attention should be spent on delivering quality, engaging content and not trying to stretch 30 minutes into 45. Quality and consistency is what will make your audience grow. And your episode length? Let the chips fall as they may. No one's going to grade you on your episode being too short when it's jam-packed with useful, memorable information from start to finish.

As podcasting's popularity and usefulness continues to escalate, more brands are pivoting to this platform as their primary content strategy and putting it ahead of other time-tested initiatives. In that list of said initiatives is email newsletters. This has long been a popular method of connecting with customers over the years. But does it hold the power it once did?
Email marketing still has value...if it's done correctly. Clear, concise newsletters with imagery and incentives for readers to open them still deliver results for brands of all shapes and sizes. But newsletters with extensive word counts that don't consider people's on-the-go schedules tend to get ignored, deleted, and unsubscribed from.
So, the question must be asked: Is a podcast for your brand more effective than email marketing?
In Episode 32 of Pod Theory, I'm going to tackle this subject and share some reasons why podcasting has more impact than an email newsletter. Additionally, I'm going to share how you can utilize BOTH of these mediums to enhance your brand message and grow all of your platforms cohesively.

Launching a podcast for your brand puts you in a great position to establish authority, provide solutions to your listener's problems, and communicate with your audience in a fun, innovative way. Plus, with brands just now starting to get into podcasting, establishing your show in the podcast space today puts you ahead of the curve and will set you up for long-term success when more companies eventually hop on the bandwagon.
When building your podcast, it's imperative that you look at all aspects of your show and determine the best way to craft your content. Your podcast should be built in your mold, so you can grow it to succeed in your vision.
That said, there are several intangibles that ALL podcasts need. In Episode 33 of Pod Theory, I'm going to break down seven of those intangibles, as well as go into detail of why each is important to the growth and evolution of your podcast over time.

3 Effective Promotional Ideas That Will Grow Your Podcast
00:06:45
Promoting your podcast is something you'll be doing for the life of your show. Even if you grow an audience of hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of people downloading each episode you produce, you don't want to slow down your promotional train. You want your podcast to become a household name. And what do all household names do to earn that moniker? Advertise, advertise, advertise.
To keep your promotional strategy fun and creative, it's important to think outside the box and do some things that will help your podcast stand out. You have plenty of platforms at your disposal to show the world what you have to offer. But it never hurts to go beyond the standard initiatives and do something that helps your podcast pop.
In Episode 35 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share three time-tested, effective, go-to promotional ideas that you can implement IMMEDIATELY to help your podcast grow. These ideas aren't brand new, but they've been used by brands for years to spread their message. If you implement them correctly, they'll add a whole new layer of excellence to your podcast!

3 Websites For Finding Killer (and Legal) Music For Your Podcast
00:08:35
Music is a major part of life. It inspires, it energizes, it consoles, it entertains.
Music adds character to your podcast and helps makes your production even more fun to listen to. How powerful would it be if your catchy theme song gets stuck inside someone's head and they hum it all day long? They'll be coming back to your podcast the second they get the chance!
In Episode 36 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share three websites that provide incredible music options for use on your podcast. Your choices will span thousands of options in numerous genres, all but guaranteeing you'll find the perfect song to fit your show. And, the best part? All of this music is legal for you to use! Using copyrighted music is a big no-no, and I'll get into why you want to avoid this pitfall at all costs on today's show, too.

Evergreen vs. Current Content: Which One Comes Out On Top?
00:07:06
When considering the content structure for your podcast, two big categories typically come into play:
1) Evergreen content, which is content that will hold value long after you publish it 2) Current content, which is content that covers current news, events, and happenings
Which one of these structures is best? I'm going to break down both and help you make that decision in Episode 37 of Pod Theory.
Both approaches offer a great way to reach your audience, but require the right amount of dedication and preparation to achieve. This episode provides pros and cons to both approaches and will help you determine which way is best for you to proceed with building your podcast's content structure.

Mindset is everything. It literally makes or breaks anything you do. A positive mindset and a belief that what you're about to embark upon will result in a great outcome will do just that. Likewise, a negative mindset and a belief that things are going to blow up in your face will do just that as well. That's the power your mind has.
Like everything else, the mindset you bring to your podcast is critical to how your production unfolds, how positive your end results are, and how consistent you remain in your mission to build your show into a content machine over time.
In Episode 38 of Pod Theory, I take a hard look at the podcast mindset and why it's such a critical aspect of your podcasting journey. I cover why a negative mindset can ruin your production, how a positive mindset will manifest itself into a show everyone wants to hear, and why you need to find the positives in every situation with your show...even if something doesn't go the way you planned. I may even bring a couple golf analogies into the conversation. Hit the play button now to find out.

There are several advantages to creating blog posts for your podcast episodes. It gives your current listeners an alternative way to connect with your show and helps potential listeners discover you on a platform outside of their favorite podcast app. Additionally, it allows you to repurpose content used to prepare for your podcast and amplifies your podcast's chances of ranking better on search engines.
Your blog post can serve as a hub for your current episode, featuring expanded show notes, an embedding of your recording, and any additional content you created for your show, such as imagery, slides, webinars, or videos.
In Episode 39, I zero in on why blog posts provide a major boost in exposure for your podcast. You'll learn why you should take this extra step and produce a post for every episode you do, as well as what your posts should include (which I kinda just spilled in paragraph two of this show summary. Oh well, listen anyway!).

Best Practices For Communicating with Podcast Guests
00:08:10
Having a guest on your podcast is a big deal. It may seem like a common thing because guests appear on podcasts all the time. But there are many layers to the guest-host-producer dynamic that will not only help you build kick-ass content for your podcast, but build relationships that allow you to expand your network and, if you play your cards right, grow your upcoming guest list exponentially.
Episode 40 of Pod Theory is all about how to communicate with guests. I take this initiative very seriously, both for my podcasts, as well as my client's podcasts that I help produce. I want to ensure that any guest that's set to appear on a podcast I'm connected to feels welcome, feels appreciated, and has a clear understanding of what their role will be in the production of their episode.
In this episode, I break down my approach in detail so you can apply the same initiatives to your guest recruitment. Establishing strong communication with your guest from your very first interaction will pave the road for everything to go smoothly, from pre-interview all the way through episode publication and beyond.

4 Ways to Work Ads Into Your Podcast So Listeners Hear Them
00:10:30
Podcast advertisements have become a substantial vehicle for brands to reach consumers. It's been proven that 75% of podcast listeners not only pay attention to ads they hear on podcasts, but respond to calls to action after hearing them (according to Wordstream). This is extremely powerful. And if your podcast has a large audience, it could serve as the perfect platform for brands of all shapes and sizes to showcase their wares.
On Episode 41 of Pod Theory, I'm going to show you four ways you can works ads into your podcast so listeners hear them. If you land an advertiser, you want to ensure their ads are effective, your audience is engaging with them, and they serve the purpose of getting the advertiser new customers so they continue to do business with you. For this to happen, you want to make sure your ad is placed where listeners won't skip passed it.
I structured this episode a bit differently than past episodes of Pod Theory. To give you examples of how these four tactics work, I used actual ads that I've created so you get a feel for how it works. Whether you score a big ticket advertiser or exchange ad space with another podcast, getting the most traction from the ad content will help everyone in the long run.

3 Brands I Learned About For the First Time Through Podcast Ads
00:07:26
As I covered on Episode 41 of Pod Theory, podcast advertising has exploded and thousands of brands have utilized the podcast airwaves to showcase their products, services, and offerings. As the medium continues to grow, so will advertising. Companies will always go where the people are when it comes time to invest their advertising budget. Because podcast audiences are so engaged, this platform makes the most sense for finding new customers.
On Episode 42 of Pod Theory, I'm continuing the ad conversation by sharing three companies I had never heard of until I caught their advertisements on podcasts I listen to. Like me, you've probably stumbled upon a brand once unfamiliar to you through a well-placed ad on your podcast, or podcasts, of choice. Personally, I feel brands who are forward-thinking enough to realize the podcast space offers prime real estate for advertising deserve more of our attention and, in turn, more of our patronage.

How Podcasting Makes Your Brand Content Bingeworthy
00:05:53
People love to binge. Services like Netflix, HBO, and Amazon Prime Video thrive on the fact that we'll get wrapped up in whatever show catches our attention...for hours at a time. Gone are the days where you need to 'tune in next week' to see how a story continues. The majority of content today is served up a season at a time. And past shows that we loved are available from start to finish, making it easy to relive every episode without missing a beat.
This is the beauty of podcast content: it's set up the same way. If you're like me, if you find a new podcast and fall in love with it, you go back in the archives and start to catch up from the very first episode. I think it's great to see how shows evolve, how hosts get more comfortable, and experience the full range of topics within the podcast's portfolio. As a brand, it doesn't get much more powerful than someone binging your content for days, weeks, even months at a time as they get caught up on all of your episodes. Every time they do this, their connection with your brand grows deeper.
On Episode 43 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share how podcasting makes your brand content bingeworthy. The fact that you can captivate a listener for an extended period of time by producing an engaging podcast should be reason enough to start building your show today (if you haven't already done so)!
What's your favorite show to binge? Mine is The Sopranos and Parks & Recreation. Drop me a line on Twitter and let me know yours.

How Additional Segments In Your Podcast Keep Listeners Engaged
00:06:32
Adding additional segments to your podcast can add a new layer to your show. It will allow you to take a slight detour from the main subject matter of your episode and delve into something else that's relevant to your audience. It can also be delivered in a completely different fashion than your main subject matter.
On Episode 44 of Pod Theory, I'm breaking down how additional segments in your podcast keep listeners engaged. There are a number of different things you can present in your segments...all of which have a goal of captivating your listener in an exceptional way. You never know what piece of content is going to cause a listener to take action, get inspired, tell their friend about your show, leave you a review, etc. Providing added value will make this far more likely.

The Biggest Mistake You Can Make With Your Podcast
00:07:08
We both know there are a lot of mistakes you can make when it comes to your podcast. Lack of planning, poor audio quality, inconsistency with releases, not delivering content as advertised...this is just the tip of the iceberg.
But there is one mistake you can make that trumps them all.
On Episode 45 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share my thoughts on the biggest mistake you can make when it comes to your podcast. And chances are, it's not what you're thinking.

The coronavirus pandemic has rendered one of the most significant impacts on society in the last century. The results of this impact have seen businesses close, processes change, and, unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people die.
COVID-19 has forced us into home schooling, working from home, and, as podcasters, finding new ways to create content. If there's a silver lining to be found in all of this craziness, it's how we've been able to implement technology into our practices to ensure we stay connected and keep the podcast content coming.
In Episode 46 of Pod Theory, I'm going to break down some of the nuances COVID-19 has brought to the podcasting landscape. From long-distance recording to podcasts being created in a 100% virtual environment, this time period has brought some new practices that won't go away anytime soon.

The Undeniable Connection Between Social Media and Your Podcast
00:06:21
Social media and podcasting seemingly go hand in hand. If you've built a strong social media following, you're going to use those platforms to communicate with your audience and let them know you have a podcast. Likewise, on your podcast, you're going to encourage your listeners to follow you on social media.
It's also been proven that podcast listeners are more apt to follow brands on social media. Therefore, having both can help you acquire a larger audience and more customers for your products and services.
In Episode 47 of Pod Theory, I'm covering the undeniable connection social media and your podcast have. That said, is social media mandatory for growing your podcast audience? I'm going to touch on this and set the table for Episode 48, where I'll cover that aspect of the podcast/social media connection in more detail.

Why Building Your Audience Outside of Social Media Is Critical...Now More Than Ever
00:12:09
There's no question social media has changed. Organic reach is all but over and networks like Facebook and Instagram are pay to play. This significantly impacts the role social media plays in your efforts and furthers the belief that building an audience outside of social media is crucial to your long-term success.
Social media still has value. But you need to determine how to make it work for you while implementing other time-tested methods into the growth of your podcast.
On Episode 48, I'm breaking down why now, more than ever, building your audience outside of social media is critical to your success. I'm going to cover ways social media has shifted its focus and why you have to adapt to those shifts, as well as how initiatives like SEO, email, and others present better opportunities to grow your podcast audience.

Getting content to go viral can be exciting and generate some buzz around your podcast, social media, website, etc. But in the grand scheme of things, viral content is not an approach you can bank on. You can't control whether something will go viral...
...but what you can control is consistently producing quality content. Producing quality content on a consistent basis will do much more for your long-term success. And a podcast is the ultimate vehicle for creating consistent content.
On Episode 49 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share why producing consistent content with your podcast trumps viral content every time. Consistency is in your control and could even lead to something going viral...which should be treated as a bonus.

How do you make a first impression on your listener? From a visual standpoint, your podcast art, show title, and show description should paint a pretty clear picture of what a listener is about to experience as they dive into your show.
From an audio standpoint, your podcast intro is the first thing a listener is going to hear to connect them with your podcast. You want to be sure you use this space to create something that's impactful and memorable while, at the same time, informs your listener who you are, what your podcast is about, and what they'll gain by listening to the episode that lays ahead.
On Episode 51 of Pod Theory, I'm going to cover how you can produce a quality intro for your podcast. One that gets stuck in someone's head, fits into the appropriate timeframe, lets your listener know what your show is all about, and why the content you're about to share is going to help them solve a problem, learn something new, or provide them with the entertainment they seek.

Structure isn't always the sexiest subject to cover. But when you think about it, if we didn't live in a world with some semblance of structure, life would be chaos.
Likewise, a podcast without structure will come off as chaotic to your audience. Listeners come to depend on a certain level of predictability with the shows they follow. And for you, having a structure in place for your episodes will allow you to deliver content in a desirable way, get more listeners hooked on your efforts, and maximize your creativity from the beginning of your podcast to the end. Plus, structure will simplify your post-production efforts, allowing you to focus your time on other initiatives that help your podcast grow.
In Episode 52 of Pod Theory, I'm going to share some insights on how to structure your podcast episodes. Whether you record solo, feature guests, or have multiple co-hosts on the mics, following a basic structure will make for a better final production. Your podcast is your pulpit for storytelling...and a good story, from front to back, always has structure.
What is your favorite podcast episode style and structure? Connect with me on Twitter and let's rap about it.

As your podcast episode reaches its conclusion, the most important thing for you to do is give your listener something to do. Something that keeps them connected to you and your brand. Something that enhances your efforts. This is called a Call to Action, or CTA.
On Episode 53 of Pod Theory, I'm going to help you craft a quality, meaningful outro for your podcast. From choosing the right CTA to inviting your listeners back for your next show, making sure you have all your bases covered with your outro will result in a lasting impression that stays with your listener until your next podcast episode releases.
