04 Sep 2024Michael George on Picking Up a Call From Your True Self00:52:02

Today's episode is quite unique. Usually I talk with celebrities, entrepreneurs and popular thought leaders. But not today. My special guest today is Michael George. Michael is one a key journey of redemption and beginning a new chapter of his life - rediscovering his true self after embracing his pluck-ups.

Michael came across my book, 'Beginner's Pluck,' at a book club. Having been a former inmate in prison, Michael talks to me about his regrets, how he learned to uplift himself and trust those who loved him.

This is an inspiring tale - and there is no better place to share the beauty of pluck-ups than here!

21 Sep 2020#11 Khristi Adams on the Wisdom of Young Black Women and Acknowledging Shortcomings00:38:08
Khristi Lauren Adams had a realization that young women of color, particularly Black girls, always had to share the space and that their voices are very rarely the center of stories we read and hear about. This week, you'll hear my conversation with Khristi, author of the “Parable of The Brown Girl” — recommended as one of the books by Black authors to read by top media outlets like Vogue, Essence and PopSugar. Khristi is a speaker, an ordained Minister and is the co-director of Diversity and Inclusion at the Hill School in Philadelphia.

In this episode, I talked to Khristi about how wanting to do something unconventional led her to become a pastor and the obligation and responsibility she felt towards elevating the stories of young women of color. Plus, how a Jennifer Aniston movie influenced her to pick her major in college!

17 Jul 2021#39 Jeffrey Hollender (Seventh Generation) on Starting Again and Making an Impact00:51:07

We’ve had incredible voices come on the show talk about their personal pluck ups. In the first episode of our new season, Jeffrey Hollender, co-founder and former CEO of Seventh Generation, shares personal and career crises that had monumental impacts.

In our conversation, Jeffrey talks about evolution and growth. We talk about everything, from baking social responsibility into a company and changing the world by how we do business to how he came out of his most expensive pluck up — getting fired from a company he grew for 20 years.

Sarah LaFleur is the Founder & CEO of M.M.LaFleur, a women’s workwear brand that she launched in 2013. 10 Aug 2020#5 Sadie Lincoln on the Downside of Success and Becoming Better Leaders00:47:53

Today’s episode shares the first(and only) interview I was able to record in person, right before the world was turned upside down by COVID-19. I look to today’s guest, Sadie Lincoln as a kindred spirit. Sadie is a Portland success story who co-founded barre3, a fitness company focused on teaching people to be balanced in body and empowered from within. In the months since we recorded this episode, Sadie has become a dear friend and trusted advisor.

In this episode, Sadie and I talked about a myriad of topics, from Sadie’s incredibly fascinating upbringing to mommy guilt and how people see and treat you differently once you’ve become a celebrated entrepreneur. We also talk about what steps Sadie took alongside her husband, who’s also her business partner, to become better leaders of their company.

23 Aug 2021#44 Marvyn Harrison on Parenting as a Black Dad in America00:57:47

Marvyn Harrison is the host of the 'Dope Black Dads' podcast and the CEO of Dope Black CIC, an educational and healing platform designed to improve the outcomes of Black people.

In this episode, Marvyn and I dive into a very nuanced and vulnerable conversation around parenting from a distinctly male perspective. Our conversation is not a how-to or guide but a discussion on how our lived experiences and new learnings can impact the way we raise our kids. On the podcast, we also talk about systematic racism, white feminism, and how that all intersects with the way we handle relationships and interact with the world.

08 Mar 2021#27 Noor Tagouri on Empathy and Modern Day Activism00:42:16

On International Women’s Day, we are featuring the brilliant and award-winning journalist and producer, Noor Tagouri. Her documentary and subsequent podcast series, Sold in America: Inside Our Nation’s Sex Trade received a 2019 Gracies award for Best Investigative Series. She’s amassed a  community of over two million social media followers while garnering international praise as one of new media’s most influential voices.

Being born to immigrant parents from Libya, Noor talks to me about how her ethnicity and how she felt so unsure about who she was in a sea of kids who didn’t look like her. Apart from Noor’s background, what’s so interesting about the conversation you’re about to hear is how Noor has always been a journalist, from the moment she could speak. In this episode, we dive into so much, from empathy, shame, misrepresentation of Muslims in American media, to why modern-day activism begins with yourself and your home.

05 Oct 2023Jake Kauffman on Being Vulnerable About our Trauma 00:49:44

“When I sat with my anger long enough, she told me her real name is grief.”

That was just one of the many gems I got to hear from my guest today, Jake Kauffman.

Jake is a business coach and motivational speaker, and author of ‘Let Love In,’ a truly inspiring book.

We dive in almost immediately into an open conversation about accepting our trauma and learning to be vulnerable about the pain.

Jake explains how our suffering, pains and shame manifest externally as anger sometimes in our lives.

He also opens up about the emotional struggles men face and the patriarchal society we live in today.

I’m sure we can all learn something more about ourselves and become more empathetic after listening to this one. There’s so much to unpack and reflect on in this episode!

I want to warn y'all  that in this episode we talk about trauma and sexual abuse.

11 Jul 2022Danielle LaPorte on the Soulful Approach to Goal Setting00:46:45

Danielle LaPorte dabbled with a number of different career paths before she became an author and entrepreneur. One of her earlier books, The Desire Map: A Guide To Creating Goals With Soul spurred a workshop program with facilitators around the world that Danielle now runs. Her goal setting mantra is that everything you want can be found in loving kindness. She also says a soulful approach to goal setting means separating what we truly want from wanting to seem successful to others.

In this episode, we talked about all the common feelings associated with success — feeling like an imposter, worrying about how other people perceive you, and burnout.

19 Oct 2023Replay: Noor Tagouri on Empathy and Modern Day Activism00:47:25

If you’re feeling a little lost, stuck or overwhelmed with grief as we watch the violence unfolding in the Middle East, this episode is for you. A fair warning: There are no hot takes. No confident opinions. Just shared grief for every precious human being impacted by the acute conflict happening, and also those impacted by the systematic violence and dehumanization that has been happening for decades in the region and across the globe. Today’s episode is a re-aired conversation with Muslim-American journalist and activist Noor Tagouri who teaches us about one of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves in times such as these. A call towards curiosity and courage. I hope you feel challenged, encouraged and a little less alone.

In this episode, Caroline, who saw herself as a scared little kid, shares how adventure became a key part of her soul. She talks to me about how growing up with her identical twin, Alexandra Paul, an accomplished writer and activist, truly helped shape her character. Caroline is an incredible spirit who opens up to me about feeling lost in her second act as a writer.

What if I told you this was the most meta episode of Plucking Up yet?

Okay, I’ll explain what I mean!

But it did become a catalyst for conversation with my wonderful friend and guest today, Ryan Leak.

Ryan is an executive coach and leadership speaker.

We spoke about embracing our mistakes and blunders - because that makes us authentic in the workplace and beyond.

He explained how being a great employee means being a good helper and genuine with your team.

This conversation was filled with laughter. We couldn’t stop laughing.

I hope you guys enjoy this conversation as much as I did. I can’t wait for you all to listen, learn and laugh too!

In this episode, Molly shares about a wildly challenging season in her life that she would define as a season of plucking up financially. Her pluck ups lead to secrecy and shame and even more plucking up. If you’ve ever had pluck ups around money -- or really just any pluck up that's made you so embarrassed that you hide in shame, I think you’ll find so much comfort and inspiration in this episode.

21 Sep 2023Ritu Bhasin on Learning to Be Confident with Cultural Identity00:51:31

“We are manifestations of who we were as children.”

Such a bold but true statement that our guest today said, during my conversation with her.

Ritu Bhasin, a leadership coach, author and motivational speaker, talks to me about how her childhood trauma and hurdles shaped her.

Ritu is unabashedly honest about the racism she faced as a South Asian child of immigrants and the mental health hurdles she overcame.

She speaks to me about how she learned to embrace her true self and cultural identity. She tells me how she hopes others can do the same

I hope you can also learn and enjoy this wonderful episode!

19 Sep 2022Laura Chinn on the Catharsis of Self Reflection00:59:55

Laura Chinn is one of those people who gets it. She got me, she got the point of this show, and in true Plucking Up style she got why it’s so important to share stories of failure, loss, and instability.

On the show, I had the opportunity to chat with the author, script writer, and actress about her new memoir, Acne.

Laura says the process of writing a memoir and putting it out into the world is cathartic. We also got into what we’ve learned through therapy and working on ourselves.

Do some self-reflection while listening to this episode. I certainly did!

26 Sep 2022Keltie Knight on the Reality of Chasing Wild Dreams00:49:17

Authorship and podcasting have a lot in common. You’re putting a piece of yourself out, into the world. Putting ourselves out there is something our next guest and I found we have very much in common.

Keltie Knight is an author and one third of the trio behind the LadyGang podcast. She came on the show to talk about the group’s new book of essays, Lady Secrets: Real, Raw, & Ridiculous Confessions of Womanhood.

In this episode, Keltie and I talk about therapy, what getting canceled looks like, having an invisible army, and a secret sauce to female friendship.

10 Oct 2022Katelyn Beaty on Individual Identity in Faith Communities00:57:00

Maybe quitting is a good thing. Once you find your passion, vocation and community, leaving can be really hard but moving on to the next chapter and growing is part of life.

Today’s guest, Katelyn Beaty, found her community as the first female managing editor of Christianity Today. But it eventually came time to move on to the next season of her life.

She’s now editorial director for Brazos Press and the author of two books, one of which was just released! "Celebrities for Jesus: How Personas, Platforms and Profits Are Hurting the Church" (2022) and "A Woman's Place: A Christian Vision for Your Calling in the Office, the Home and the World" (2016).

In this episode, Katelyn shared the struggle of being a woman in a christian workplace and we discussed how your vocation becomes a part of your identity.

17 Oct 2022Katy Milkman on Reinterpreting Failure00:58:29

Katy Milkman is a professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the former president of the international Society for Judgment and Decision Making. She’s also the author of the best selling book, How to Change: The Science of Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.

So, with all her expertise and years of study, one would think Katy is the ultimate decision maker. But, she says she struggles to make decisions just like the rest of us! And that’s why she loves researching how we make decisions in key areas of our life, like finances, health, and education.

In this episode, we talked about common mistakes people make when trying to make choices or build habits. To me, the most interesting pluck up Katy described was escalation of commitment.  It means that once we make a decision, oftentimes we stick to it, even though sometimes it’s better to reassess and move on. Katy says we can reinterpret our failures and see them as successes because we learned something about ourselves.

I know I learned so much about decision making, as well as success and failure from Katy and I hope you do as well.

Chanel Dokun is uniquely qualified to help us find purpose and to help us get through the pluck ups along the way. She’s a life planner, therapist, podcaster, and author of the book, Life Starts Now.

According to Chanel, everyone deserves a life of purpose and many of us don’t feel like we have one. Her work and her book are about helping people figure out who they are, what they want, and how they can get there.

On the show, we dove into building a life of purpose, the feelings of self doubt that everyone has, and how to write out your own life story.

As a therapist and podcaster, Chanel is usually the one asking questions. I’m so glad she switched it up today and offered us her deep insights on self discovery and stepping into your purpose.

31 Oct 2022Bianca Stone on Measuring Success In Your Own Terms00:52:09

There are thousands of ways to measure success. As a poet, Bianca Stone measures it through the people that connect with her work. She feels most successful when she gets a message from an individual reader about how her poetry spoke to their specific situation.

On the show, we talked about success and the different ways to measure it. We also talked about success as a poet. Bianca is the granddaughter of another iconic female poet, Ruth Stone. And while she clearly told me that her poetry is her profession, she also runs The Ruth Stone House, a space to encourage the creativity of other poets.

05 Apr 2021#31 Heidi Zak (Thirdlove) on Walking Away From Security and Making it Happen00:46:51

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking a lot about shifting mindsets, which may sound very abstract and quite ‘self-helpy’ but it actually isn’t. Whether you’re at an early or later stage in your career or you just started your own business, there is a lot of value in looking at things differently. Our next guest, whose mantra is ‘make it happen’, really did -- but not without pluck ups along the way!

Heidi Zak is the co-founder and CEO of ThirdLove, a company that was built to do bras differently. Heidi has been named among Fortune’s 40 Under 40 and her brand has made a mark in the retail and fashion world due to its commitment to inclusivity.

On the show, we’ll talk about Heidi’s mom’s reaction to quitting her very secure job at Google, which can be summed up as “You’re leaving the best company in the world and do what with bras?” We’ll dive into our mutual experience of working with our significant others. And Heidi will share a huge pluck up, which involved half of her team at ThirdLove quitting and how she moved on from that moment of despair.

20 Feb 2023Adrian Grenier on How Past Mistakes Can Lead to a Fulfilling Life00:58:42

What does it mean to truly learn from one’s mistakes? What does it mean to learn and grow from one’s flaws?

The former ‘Entourage’ star, Adrian Grenier talked to me in this fireside chat about these very questions and his own life reflections.

From becoming a young Hollywood star to now removed from the glamor of celebrity life, Adrian tells us how he now chooses to live a life committed to climate change activism.

Adrian talked to me about acting actually being a Plan B for him.

In this conversation, Adrian vulnerably tells me how his breakup with a girlfriend led to a life-changing learning experience.

We learn about his initiatives like his Earth Speed YouTube channel and activism in spreading more awareness about climate change and the impact on our oceans, as he himself chose to live closer to nature.

27 Feb 2023Jane Elliott on The Reality of Discrimination in America00:49:54

How does an elementary school classroom exercise conducted by a teacher more than 50 years ago continue to impact, teach and remain socially relevant today?

For that, you’ll need to listen to our guest, Jane Elliott.

The educator and social activist famously conducted the ‘blue eye-brown eye’ exercise with her classroom in 1968, to teach the young students the foolishness and sad reality of discrimination and racism in America.

Elliott went on to conduct the social experiment in other classrooms, with college students, at The White House and broadcasted shows like ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’

Despite the backlash, Elliott sought to prove the absurdity of discrimination and push for us to break walls of division.

She talks to me about her childhood, the struggles she and her family faced and why she believes in only the ‘human race.’

Be prepared for an unabashed, blunt, honest and transparent conversation.

I learned from a trailblazer who was ahead of her time and yet still holds on to that youthful spirit.

13 Mar 2023Zainab Salbi on Self-Discovery By Empowering Others00:53:33

“I am a women’s rights activist at heart and I shall die trying…I will always fight for women’s rights, resources and voices.” This is just one of the many powerful quotes from our inspirational guest today, Zainab Salbi.

The co-founder of Women for Women International, Zainab worked to empower women from war torn countries for more than 20 years.

After helping nearly a half a million women survivors of conflicts, Zainab now works with women to solve climate change issues through her Daughters for Earth organization.

Zainab talks to me about her struggle escaping Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and how a near-death experience recently allowed her to accept herself and redefined her purpose.

I was inspired to learn how she started her organization at the age of 23 but knew exactly when to leave from the leadership role as well.

This conversation was therapeutic, transparent and motivational.

And as a successful life coach, she understands how we can get ourselves to be more present in the process of self-care.

Marie Forleo was named by Oprah as a thought leader for the next generation. A best-selling author of the book, ‘Everything is Figureoutable,’ Marie is a successful life and career coach.

Marie talks to me about life lessons from her difficult childhood experiences - like being kicked out of the house at the age of 13. She explains how we can stop becoming the prisoners in our minds’ torture chambers by not focusing on successes or failures.

In our season finale, our guest really brings to us an extremely honest and heartwarming conversation.

If you’re not familiar with Arianna Huffington’s highlight reel, here’s a rundown: She is the founder and CEO of Thrive Global and the founder of The Huffington Post. Arianna is the author of 15 books and has been named to Time Magazine’s list of the World’s 100 Most Influential People and Forbes Most Powerful Women List. Thrive Global, her company, is a leading behavior change tech company that aims to change the way we work and live — by ending how we see burnout as this price we pay for success.  But, we do things differently here at Plucking Up. Instead of going through her insane achievements, Arianna so honestly shares how she sucked in life for a while, and why that’s okay! In this episode, we talk about Arianna’s accent, a motto she lives by, and why everything in life shouldn’t be a ‘make or break.’ I’m telling you I made all kinds of assumptions before meeting Arianna and she just surprised me in the most amazing way. Do not miss my favorite conversation on this podcast, EVER.

08 Nov 2021Katia Beauchamp (Birchbox) on Making Difficult Decisions While Holding on to Your Dream00:47:14

How do you take responsibility for things that go wrong — without hating yourself? On the podcast, celebrities and leaders at the top of their game share some pretty intimate and truly authentic experiences that give us a beautiful glimpse into who they really are. Today’s guest, Katia Beauchamp, CEO and Co-Founder of Birchbox, is no exception. Birchbox is a monthly beauty and grooming subscription box that quickly grew into a multimillion-dollar brand. In this episode, Katia raises a lot of really honest thoughts about how we conflate love with comfort, how she disappointed people who helped build her dream, and the discipline of taking responsibility when things go wrong.

15 Dec 2020#22 Season 1 Finale - An Epic Season of Plucks!00:40:05

In our season finale, Liz shares her favorite moments from previous episodes (which was a daunting task considering there's so much wisdom, humor, and authenticity in each one). If you're tuning into the podcast for the first time, this is actually a perfect beginner's episode because Liz does not only talk about highlights from episodes that stood out to her, but also some serious behind the scene stuff (one involving a lot of nervous sweating before her interview with Liz Gilbert!) Liz B. also recalls a profound experience from a year ago that led her to launching her own podcast. In doing so, Liz hopes that Plucking Up has become a place for listeners to walk away feeling inspired and feeling a little bit less alone with their very own messy and beautiful pluck ups.

08 Sep 2020#9 Jaime Schmidt on Imposter’s Syndrome and Supporting Underserved Creatives00:36:59
In 2010, Jaime Schmidt founded personal care company Schmidt’s Naturals in Portland, Oregon — right in her very own kitchen. She scaled her company and 7 years later, sold it to legacy brand Unilever.

But, if you’ve been listening to our podcast, you know we won't be focusing on that highlight reel. In this episode, Jaime talks to me about the things that didn’t go well in her journey, including a lot of self doubt that she battled before making a 9-figure exit! She’ll also share with us her life post-Schmidt’s — which now involves supporting underrepresented founders through her investment fund, Color.

07 Sep 2023Danny Pellegrino on Facing the Reality Check of Your Dreams00:55:47

Many times in my conversations with successful people, I see that they never planned to do what they ended up doing. Somehow and in some way, we stumble upon the mission and goals we seek to achieve.

But our guest today is someone who knew exactly at a young age what he wanted to succeed in. But that doesn't mean his journey didn’t come with hurdles and pluck-ups!

My guest today is Danny Pellegrino, comedian and host of the popular entertainment podcast, 'Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino.'

Danny knew he had a passion for the comedy and entertainment world as a child. But when it came to trying to succeed in the field, he did experience a reality check.

Danny talks to me candidly about facing his own mental health struggles trying to “make it,” and feeling like “it wasn’t meant to happen.”

He talks to me about being happy in your own skin, learning to hustle and his favorite pop culture topics!

This is certainly a vulnerable conversation but also a very fun-filled one - Danny is so fun to talk too!

Can’t wait for y'all to take a listen as well! Enjoy!

05 Oct 2020#13 Katherine Schwarzenegger on Failed Friendships and the Gift of Forgiveness00:29:58

She is a New York Times best-selling author , debuting her career with her first first book “Rock What You’ve Got,” a book that speaks to young women struggling with self esteem and body image issues.

In our wide-ranging conversation, Katherine shares everything, from highschool relationships to failed friendships and more recently, launching a new book at the cusp of the pandemic. She will also share with us how she’s learning the many facets and nuances of forgiveness, and why we should consider it a gift!

23 Jan 2024Replay Episode: Matthew McConaughey on How Responsibility Breeds True Freedom00:50:46

Hey Pluckies! I'm back with one of my favorite episodes from the past.

Let's revisit the time I sat down with the superstar, Matthew McConaughey! Yes, I still can't believe it!

In this amazing conversation, the Academy Award-winner talks about parenting, from how he was raised to how he’s raising his own children and his learning journey as an actor, how we went from complacency and shame to getting roles of a lifetime.

There’s a lot of uniquely introspective wisdom about failure, guilt, and embarrassment that we talk about, as well as visceral experiences Matthew shared in our conversation!

Let's relisten together!.

04 Jun 2024Conor Lewis on Why to Persevere Despite Failing Constantly01:02:32

Hello Pluckies! I'm sure you're used to stories of people struggling and facing failures to eventually succeed. I mean we certainly have a bunch of them on Plucking Up as well - failing or 'plucking up' is important for our growth.

But my guest today, Conor Lewis, tells us why it's important even though you may not find the success you hoped.

Conor was the founder of one of the biggest kickstarters ever with a children's toy company. But through the hurdles and deep setbacks he faced, Conor remained relentless and hopeful.

Conor tells us what he learned through that journey - this one is a tear-jerker and truly inspirational one! Fun fact - Conor is also the husband of one of my dear friends.

Listen and learn with me!

26 Jan 2024Replay Episode: Megan Tamte on Finding Meaning in Average Moments00:43:35

As we continue our replay journey, I wanted to take us to a really important season 2 episode.

I chatted with Megan Tamte, CEO of Evereve, a contemporary women’s fashion brand with retail stores across the country.

She talks about the importance holding on to your dreams until they are fulfilled and never giving up.

She also talks about how we can find meaning in average moments.

Let's relisten together!

Ashlee Eiland is a leader, pastor and writer. She is the author of “Human (Kind): How Reclaiming Human Worth and Embracing Radical Kindness Will Bring Us Back Together.”  Ashlee is a gifted speaker and truth teller.

In this episode, Ashlee and I talk about how growing up in an all girls school helped shape who she was — including why it never crossed her mind to play small. In our wide-ranging conversation, Ashlee discusses living through a racial filter and how it feels to be the one Black woman who writes about kindness, especially in the midst of a much needed civil rights equality movement.

22 Nov 2021Faitth Brooks on Accountability in our Anti-Racism Journey00:51:47

We’ve had quite a few anti-racism activists and educators. I always find myself thinking about racism and the different ways that I’m a part of the problem and hopefully the solution. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Faitth Brooks on the podcast today. I met Faitth through “Be the Bridge” a community that helps bring people together to discuss and work towards racial reconciliation. Faitth is a social worker, activist and, the co-host of the “Melanated Faith” podcast.

I don’t want to give away too much but I urge you to listen with vulnerability and openness. Faitth encourages us to forgive ourselves for what we didn’t know and be accountable for what we do know. And I hope this show propels you to give your former self some grace and your future some tools for doing better.

In this episode, we speak with Cate Luzio, a business leader who spent the last 20 years in banking before launching her own company … right before a global pandemic.

Cate is the founder and CEO of Luminary, a community that supports women in building professional networks and business allies. On the show, she also talks about how purpose bred her own resilience and the community she’s held onto in her toughest moments.

17 Aug 2023Dan O'Brien on Empowering Ourselves Through Storytelling01:02:35

Can the trauma we’ve faced heal or even shape the stories we tell?

My guest today, Dan O’Brien certainly has insight and wisdom on this question.

He’s a renowned playwright for plays like The Body of an American. His plays have won him prestigious awards like PEN American Award for Drama and The Guggenheim Fellowship.

With his bestselling poem collections and books, Dan is a storyteller at heart.

In this extremely transparent and vulnerable conversation, Dan speaks about his childhood trauma, his battle with cancer and how storytelling is therapeutic for him.

He opens up and takes me down memory lane in his struggles succeeding as a playwright.

Dan has a series of different upcoming books and memoirs coming up. Check them out here:

'From Scarsdale' , True Story, and Survivor's Notebook.

There was so much to learn from this episode. I can’t wait for y'all to take a listen!

01 Oct 2024Tom Turcich on What To Do When Your Adventure Ends00:46:39

Here we are! The Season Finale is here! Wow what a journey of amazing, thought-provoking and truly emotional conversations from a diverse bunch of influential guests.

For our finale, I have with me Tom Turcich, the tenth person to walk around the world. That's right! Tom walked to six continents, 38 countries for seven years. He chronicled the journey in his book, The World Walk.

We talked about the funny and pluck-ups on this life-changing journey and what inspired him. But more importantly, we spoke up about his challenges after he returned to a life of normalcy - when we get a reality check!

Check out this very inspiring story. And stay tuned for more from the Plucking Up podcast as we prepare a new season soon!

15 Nov 2021Pamela Slim on Leaving a Legacy over an Empire00:53:29

Love of community is what I have in common with our next guest, Pamela Slim. Pamela is the author of “Escape From Cubicle Nation” and the upcoming book “The Widest Net.” She partnered with author Susan Cain to launch the Quiet Revolution and the Quiet Leadership Institute.

In this episode, we cover how Pamela’s upbringing seeded the idea of why having a community around you is so critical. We talk about financial pluck ups (which I think a handful of us can relate to) and getting through those downhill skiing moments in life. Pam and I also discuss cultures that reinforce inequity, the importance of small steps, and the desire to leave a legacy over an empire.

12 Oct 2020#14 Sarah Bessey on the Scarcity Mindset and Having an Expectant Heart00:44:00
Sarah Bessey is the author of the best-selling and critically-acclaimed books “Jesus Feminist” and “Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith.” She’s a sought-after speaker at conferences, churches, and universities around the world.

I love this conversation because Sarah is so brutally honest about her journey as a writer. She literally lived to tell the horrors of rejection from book agents and peers — essentially telling her that she wasn’t going to get a book deal! In this episode, we talk about all of that, plus what it means to have expectations versus being expectant. Bonus: I also get a little personal about my faith and my own struggles about labels.

For those of you who don’t know, charity: water has funded nearly 80,000 water projects in almost 30 countries.

I love so many things about Scott’s story, from the long-form tale of redemption with some childhood trauma to the powerful reminder that it is never ever too late to wake up and say, “But what if?”. What if life is about something bigger and beautiful?

17 Aug 2020#6 Morgan Harper Nichols on the Perils of Comparison and Living Out Your True Purpose00:52:52
We have often villainized social media, but knowing the artist, poet, and author Morgan Harper Nichols is an honest testament to the power of the platform to be used for good. “All Along You Were Blooming,” is an illustrated collection of poetry and prose from Morgan who has collaborated with brands like Coach, Adobe, LiveNation, and Aerie. Her MHN stamped poetry and art continue to get shared by her 1.4 million followers and beyond.

But before she found her footing, Morgan had to deal with what most of us might have experienced at some point in our lives: insecurity and thinking we’re never good enough in comparison to our peers. In this episode, Morgan talks to me about her very raw pluck ups, like not getting the songwriter career she wanted, and how she’s impacting the lives of young people through her creative work (which also involves turning DMs into profound art!)

07 Dec 2020#21 Janice Bryant Howroyd on Being at the Forefront of Change and Taking Control of Your Destiny00:47:41

Janice Bryant Howroyd is the founder and CEO of The ActOne Group, an award-winning company in the human resources industry. The ActOne Group is a multi-billion dollar business she started with just about $1500 in savings.

But Janice is more than an incredible businesswoman with tons of accolades and accomplishments under her belt. Janice has lived a phenomenal life that, while filled with challenges, can inspire anyone in pursuit of changing the course of their own history. In this episode, she talks to me about living in a Bible-based community in the Deep South and the supportive environment Janice’s parents created for her, as well as 10 other siblings. We also dive deep into her experience of being the ONLY student of color to integrate at an white school in 11th grade — and why she calls it the worst year of her life. Janice also shares leaving North Carolina to move to LA — and the success that she was able to build from the ground up.

Finally, we’ll also hear from Janice about a moment when she was putting into the universe negative narratives about herself and who ultimately gave her the encouragement she needed.

02 May 2022Lisa Sharon Harper on Listening and Learning From Our Ancestors01:00:54

After a brief hiatus, we're back on the mic with Lisa Sharon Harper. Lisa is an activist, speaker, and author of multiple books, including one of my favorites, The Very Good Gospel.

In this episode, Lisa tells us about her first encounter with success—writing an award-winning play in college—and how she handled the regret that came from walking away from what could have been a big, Broadway career. Lisa’s still an incredible storyteller and today she uses that gift to help us learn about the power and potential of our ancestors.

30 Nov 2020#20 Debbie Millman on the Slow Climb and Long Road to Success00:38:34

Today's guest, Debbie Millman is an accomplished figure and leader in the design world. She is an author, educator, curator, and the host of the podcast Design Matters, one of the world’s first and longest-running podcasts. Debbie is the author of six books, ”How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer” and “Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits.” She also co-founded the world’s first graduate program in branding at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

In this episode, we’ll tackle the different facets of Debbie’s road to success, including growing up in an abusive home and her experiments in rejection and failure. She’ll talk to us about not finding a sense of accomplishment until she was in her 40s, and how imagination ultimately saved her.

27 Sep 2021#49 Eve Rodsky (Fair Play) on How Breakdowns Can Change Your Life00:56:58

In my honest but also biased opinion, this is a hands-down winning conversation with Eve Rodsky, a Harvard-grad lawyer, activist, and author of the New York Times bestselling book and Reese Witherspoon’s book club pick, "Fair Play."

On the show, we talked about how Eve took on a lot of responsibility as a kid and assumed the role of 'partner' to her mother. We get deep into the breakdown of her marriage (which also became a breakthrough) and how she ultimately spiraled into losing her identity and struggled with her mental health.

This episode is a must-listen because we talk a lot about how our society was built on the backs of invisible and unpaid labor at home and how EVERYONE in a partnership wins when we communicate openly and honestly about the seen and unseen labor in a home.

09 Nov 2020#17 Todd Henry on the Gut Check and Embracing Failure00:48:05

Todd Henry is a sought after international speaker and author of 5 books that’s been translated in dozens of languages. Todd has helped hundreds of thousands of people generate brilliant ideas and do the best work of their lives. In this episode, Todd takes me back to 2005 when he started The Accidental Creative podcast, which now has millions of downloads. And yes, you heard it right, I said 2005!

Todd tells me about his biggest pluck up, one that put him on the verge of quitting his business. We also get into parenting, the "U" shape of the creative journey, and why we should challenge the invisible narratives around work that we often hear in organizations.

12 Apr 2021#32 Jedidiah Jenkins on Wrestling Through Identity, Faith and Community00:44:14

From film school to law school and the nonprofit world, Jedidiah Jenkins is now more known as the New York Times best-selling author of “To Shake The Sleeping Self” and the recently released book “Like Streams to the Ocean.”

I wish it had taken place around a campfire because it really just felt like the best chat with a kindred spirit and old friend. This episode covers A LOT, but I think you will be really encouraged and inspired by this beautiful life Jed has built -- despite lots of twists and turns along the way. We talk about being the children of divorce, of what happens when you have a big dream and go out and FAIL, and how it feels to wrestle through identity, work, and faith. Jed is thoughtful, curious, tender, hopeful, and hilarious and you’re all going to want to be his friend and buy his books when we are done here.

01 Dec 2023Replay Episode: Soman Chainani on the Reward of Not Taking the Easy Path00:47:35

Hey Pluckies! In our series of re-listening in on some beautiful Plucking Up episodes from the past, today we're replaying my conversation with Soman Chainani.

Soman Chainani is an insanely successful fantasy novel series that would become, first, a New York Times bestseller and second, a soon-to-be major motion picture on Netflix! He is behind “The School For Good and Evil,” a book series that has sold more than 2.5 million copies and has been translated into 30 languages across 6 continents.
In this episode, we talked about Soman’s two biggest influences, Walt Disney and Madonna! But of course, we go beyond Soman's highlight reel. Let's re-listen together!

16 Jun 2021BONUS EPISODE (with a special co-host!)00:57:54
This is an episode I wish I never had to record. But, I'm sharing it because I think it might help our community. In this episode, I get into more detail about dealing with severe COVID while 37 weeks pregnant (which could've ended differently!) In the history of our podcast, this is also the first time I have a co-host, my husband Ben Bohannon, who was on the front row seat of this intense experience with me.

12 Oct 2023Third Way Thinking #2: Making Mistakes in Parenting00:23:20

Hey Pluckies! Welcome back to our new series called Third Way Thinking. In this series, I'll dive into interesting topics and my own insights on a different outlook towards them.

In this week's episode, I am actually doing a solo podcast! It's like a personal journal, but open for all of you to hear as well. I look into how the podcast and hosting it over these years has actually helped me and guided me as a parent.

How can we be okay making mistakes as parents? What does it teach our kids? How do we help them learn from mistakes too?

Hope you guys enjoy this short episode!

23 May 2022Jessica Jackley (Kiva) on the Power in Beginning Again00:49:42

Jessica Jackley is, in my opinion, one of the original social entrepreneurs. She's the co-founder of Kiva, a financial services platform nearly synonymous with microlending, and the founder of a super rad new start-up, Alltruists, which delivers kid-friendly volunteer and impact projects directly to your doorstep.

In this episode, Jessica shares her painful journey of letting go of her identity as a startup founder, and a wife, as she stepped away from her beloved organization and navigated a painful separation. She also talks about moving on from these major life events, and how they prepared her for the beautiful life she’s gone on to build.

Learn more about Alltruists at alltruists.com.
