25 Mar 2024 | A Cellular Approach to Age-Related Diseases | 00:22:49
What is the root cause of many age-related diseases? Cellular senescence happens when a healthy, functioning cell ceases to divide, but doesn’t die. Senescent cells can accumulate, and their synthetic behavior can become erratic. As they begin to function in abnormal ways, they can lead to some of the diseases we fear the most: cancer, degenerative disease, liver dysfunction, etc. Follow Dr. Bob Hariri on his platforms here:
02 Apr 2024 | How To Be The CEO Of Your Own Health | 00:24:17
"The health insurance model, the hospital model, the doctor's office model is all predicated on the sicker you are, the more money the system makes. And right now we don't pay doctors to keep you healthy unless you are fortunate enough that you can afford a functional medicine doctor. So the system has to change." - Dr. William Kapp He is dedicated to advancing the new healthcare paradigm that focuses on the detection and reversal of asymptomatic diseases. 08 Apr 2024 | Will This Revolutionize Healthcare? | 00:30:48
Every day, hospitals are literally throwing away a treasure trove of natural resources that have potential life-saving possibilities. I'm talking about the placenta, and the placental stem cells contained within. What makes placental stem cells unique? In this important episode, I talk about: ➡️ Therapeutic and commercial opportunities that placental stem cells provide. ➡️ The adaptive nature of the placenta, and why a woman's body doesn't reject a fetus in the case of surrogate pregnancies - or even natural pregnancies when you consider half of the DNA of the fetus is not from the mother. ➡️ What makes placental stem cell therapies more accessible than organ transplants. ➡️ What this all potentially means for your long-term health and wellness. 15 Apr 2024 | The Secret To Delaying Aging | 00:25:36
Let's explore aging, and what some of the advances in the delay - and someday even reversal - of aging could entail. It's interesting, but the biology of aging mirrors the biology of cancer. As we learn more about the advances in the prevention, delay or reversal of cancer, we are - in effect - learning about about these same things in aging. It's possible stem cells could hold the secret. In this episode, we'll discuss: ➡️ How the body is like a computer, and why stem cells can "reboot" your system with a perfect copy of our biological software. ➡️ Why cancer in pregnant mothers doesn't spread to the fetus. ➡️ The hallmarks of healthy aging. ➡️ The importance of preserving muscle tissue and how it affects the way we age. ➡️ And more! 22 Apr 2024 | Why We're Losing the War on Cancer | 00:30:01
Why are we so far away from finding a cure for different types of cancer? Do tests run on mice have any relevance to the efficacy on people? Is the medical community getting it all wrong and where has cancer treatment failed the patient? Follow Dr. Bob Hariri on his platforms here:
30 Apr 2024 | Is Growing Human Bone the Future of Skeletal Repair | 00:30:21
We may not be far off from the end of hip and knee replacements, at least if this week's guest has anything to say about it. Nina Tandon is the co-founder and CEO of EpiBone, a biotech company that grows bone and cartilage for skeletal reconstruction. Under her leaderhip, EpiBone has raised millions in investor funding and conducted the first human implantations of bones grown from stem cells. Follow Dr. Bob Hariri on his platforms here:
06 May 2024 | How Stem Cells Were Used To Help Treat Leukemia | 00:25:37
This was a particularly personal episode for me. My guests are Mary Webb and her son, Quentin Murray. Quentin - diagnosed 17 years ago with Leukemia - was one of the first recipients of cell therapy derived from the placenta. I got to know to know Quentin during this treatment, as well as his mother, Mary Webb, who tenaciously explored options for treatment for Quentin. As it just so happened, Mary was pregnant with Quentin's sister at the time. Using stem cells from his sister's placenta - which is typically just destroyed after birth - we were able to administer therapies which restored the function of his bone marrow, and enhanced the anti-tumor effect that his immune cells could provide. I've stayed in touch with the family since then and today, Quentin is doing great. He's going to school, giving back to the community and enjoying life. In this episode, Quentin and Mary join us to talk about their experience. This is the human side of medical advancements. This is what we do it for. Enjoy the episode. 14 May 2024 | Answering the Web's Most Searched Questions About Stem Cells | 00:19:35
For this episode, I decided to have a little fun and see what the most asked questions on Google searches were about stem cells. As the placenta is my world, I also looked up some of the questions people are Google searching about placental stem cells. What people are searching for is pretty interesting. Questions ranged from aging to the legalities - and even hair loss. If you're curious about stem cells at all, and what they may be capable of, this is the episode for you. In this episode, I'll answer: ➡️ Do stem cells grow back? ➡️ How are placental stem cells collected? ➡️ Do stem cells have DNA? ➡️ Why are stem cells banned in the USA? (They're not, but I explain why people ask.) ➡️ Do stem cells help with hair loss? ➡️ Do stem cells cause cancer? ➡️ Do stem cell supplements really work? And more! 21 May 2024 | The Four Pillars of Healthy Aging | 00:27:26
I often talk about what I consider to be the four pillars of health aging: ➡️ High Performance Mobility ➡️ High Performance Cognitive Function ➡️ High Performance Immune Function ➡️ Youthful Aesthetics In this episode, I dive deep into how stem cells can help in each of these four pillars by connecting the dots on stem cell research and application. I believe we're on the verge of massive breakthroughs in stem cell therapies - therapies that will have a significant impact on each of the pillars above, and our lifespan. Indeed, they already are, and I believe what we're seeing with placental stem cells will continue to play a major roll. In fact, if you haven't watched or listened to the episode with Mary Webb and her son, Quentin, a few weeks back, I'd invite you to listen. Quentin was one of the first recipients of stem cell therapy derived from the placenta - his sisters - after a leukemia diagnosis 17 years ago. It was great to talk to him and Mary, who are both doing great! If you're curious about how stem cells could be used to improve lifespan, and what they could potentially mean for your long-term health, this is the episode for you. Let's connect the dots on all the different stem cell information and talk about the pillars of healthy aging. Welcome aboard Piloting Health. Follow Dr. Bob Hariri on his platforms here:
28 May 2024 | Maintaining Youthful Aesthetics | 00:14:27
Last week, I talked about the four pillars of healthy aging. Last on the list - but definitely not least - was youthful aesthetics. Stem cells can have a tremendous impact on the health of our skin. We're seeing it with regard to the treatment of burns. In fact, my company, Celularity, has a product that utilizes stem cells for the treatment of burns. We're also seeing more and more skin care companies use stem cells for everyday products and therapies. The health of our skin - the body's largest organ - is an important part of our overall health and our lifespan. In this episode, I'll look at how stem cells can be used to heal skin damage and help us maintain our youthful aesthetics. Follow Dr. Bob Hariri on his platforms here:
03 Jun 2024 | Your Newborn's Stem Cells Could Heal Them Years From Now | 00:09:10
The type of stem cell matters. There's no question that cells taken from the blood of the placenta or umbilical cord immediately after a pregnancy are going to have the greatest capacity for therapeutic use. The therapeutic use of mesenchymal stem cells does diminish with age. In this brief, but important, episode, I want to talk about why banking stem cells could have a profound impact on health and longevity later in life. And while adults can bank stem cells, possibly the biggest opportunity is for parents to bank the stem cells of their newborn immediately after birth. This procedure, as I've often stated, can be done very safely and very ethically through the extraction of stem cells of the placenta, which is typically discarded anyway. These cells can act as a master boot disc that could be used to re-install healthy cells in the case of certain types of diseases your child gets much later in life. So whether you're planning on having children some day, or are just excited about the incredible possibilities of stem cell therapy, this is a quick listen you won't want to miss. 10 Jun 2024 | How Regenerative Therapy Combats Specific Diseases | 00:30:11
We've talked a lot about the opportunities and possibilities of how regenerative therapies can work, so today I wanted to get into the nuts and bolts how it all works. In this episode, we'll be discussing: ➡️ Inflammation and how it causes both functional repair and dysfunctional repair. ➡️ Regenerative therapies for osteoarthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and colitis. ➡️ How a small population of people immune to HIV may be the secret to completely curing it. ➡️ Chimeric cells and their role in treating disease. ➡️ Why the medical field has one of the largest data pools for study, and how we can use AI to compile this data and accelerate therapies. And, of course, I kick off the episode associating the lessons I've learned as a pilot with lessons that can be learned in healthcare. This is Piloting Health. 06 Aug 2024 | Observing High and Low Performance in the World Around Us | 00:11:42
The subject of physical and cognitive performance is what everyone is talking about right now. Maybe not overtly, but the headlines grabbing the news are the Olympics in Paris, and President Joe Biden ending his campaign for re-election. The centerpiece of both is about performance. Maybe not overtly, but when people watch the Olympics, they're observing athletes at the peak of human physical performance, and noticing how the difference between medaling and not can come down to the smallest differences in this performance. The discussion surrounding President Biden's re-election campaign has been largely centered around his cognitive performance. With former President Trump just three years younger, it was less about the actual age and much more about the physical and cognitive performance. The bottom line is that there are real-world consequences for maintaining, or not maintaining, high performance. I've often talked about the four pillars of healthy aging: high performance physical function, high performance cognitive ability, high performance immune function and youthful aesthetics. Each plays an important role in not the years we live, but the way we engage with the world. In this episode, I talk about some of the ways that people can maintain high performance and some of the cutting edge science that is starting to be explored to help people do so. Enjoy the episode! 19 Sep 2024 | How to Win the War on Serious Disease | 00:16:52
Do the secrets to combatting disease already reside within our own bodies? We rely heavily on vaccines for serious disease, but this week's guest talks about the power of unleashing our own immune system. Lou Reese is the Board Chair and Co-Founder - along with his wife Mei Mei - of Vaxxinity, a company that focuses on active immunity medicines. I had the opportunity sit down with Lou for a pop-up podcast at a recent Abundance Platinum conference hosted by Peter Diamandis, at which Lou and I were both speaking. You'll notice the hotel ballroom curtain background. In this episode, we connect the dots between medical science and social science, discussing not just the incredible breakthroughs that Lou and his team are working on, but also finding your purpose and even setting examples for your children. 15 Oct 2024 | Your Own Personal Biological Bank Account | 00:23:11
We store our financial assets in a bank; should we be storing our biological assets as well? This episode's guest and I think so. This week's episode was filmed on location at Peter Diamandis' A360 event and features returning pod guest Andrew Hessel. If you missed his last episode, we discussed the ability to fax living organisms. This episode is just as fascinating. Andrew discusses the importance of bio-banking and what it means for your ability to combat serious disease in the future. He also gets into cloning: what does it really look like, how it's happening now, and why we're likely to see it with humans in the not-too-distant future. There's even an interesting thread about passing on your wealth to your own biological clone and what that could look like for generational wealth-building. As always with Andrew Hessel, the line between science and science fiction gets blurry as he elaborates on the technologies today that are shaping tomorrow. Enjoy the episode. 22 Oct 2024 | The 5 Biomarkers of Heart Disease May Surprise You | 00:20:58
We've been told for years by doctors to watch our cholesterol. Cereals have become synonymous with breakfast and often boast being "healthy" or at least part of a nutritious diet. There are certain "givens" that have pervaded the health and nutrition space for decades. But what if they're not true? Or only partially true? In this interview with Dr. George Shapiro, the Chief Medical Innovation Officer at Fountain Life, we explore some of the common thinking people have around heart disease and health. Dr. Shapiro breaks down the five biomarkers for arterial plaque and they're not necessarily what you'd think. When you think of diet and exercise to become healthy, what kind of diet and what types of exercise come to mind? You might be surprised by what types actually reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
