02 May 2024#192: Tracy Bingaman, PA money genius: How to do what’s best for you and your family so you can do best for your patients, and how to create a financial margin so you’ll have “F-U” freedom00:45:56

Hi! Thank you for listening! I'd love to get to know you; send me an email at hope.cook@gmail.com or visit my website for more "words of Hope." My book is coming out later this year, and if you'd like to be on my list of first readers or beta readers, please let me know!

Are you interested in having me speak at your event? Do you want to hear more about group coaching?

Key points:

  1. Think about career choices in terms of sustainability, what needs to happen to allow you to work in medicine for years to come?
  2. You don’t have to sacrifice your needs and your health for your patients and your job
  3. Ask yourself what YOU need first and foremost.  Only then can you serve others. You can’t provide compassionate care if you’re burned out.
  4. Create a margin between what you spend and what you make so you’ll have the freedom to walk away if you need to.
  5. First ask yourself which values matter the most to you.  Then look at how you show up on an average day, does this support your values and how you want your life to be?
  6. Pay attention to your health.  Your body will let you know when your values and priorities are misaligned.
  7. Don’t become so entangled in your identity as a PA that you lose sight of your own self-worth.
  8. Let go of guilt over making job changes.  We’re all adults, we’re free to make choices and live lives without regret.
  9. This job is not your “one shot.”  We add exceptional value to the healthcare system both as providers to our patients and colleagues with the doctors we work with.

22 May 2024#195: John Albanese, DMSc & PA-C, worked in ER and trauma surgery, but burnout, a new baby, and deep soul-searching led him to Academics. He earned his doctorate and rediscovered joy as a PA professor00:38:29

John is an inspiration, especially if you've thrived at the top of your game only to realize it wasn't "filling your cup." John realized he was letting work be the driver of his life, and it was leading to burnout and unhappiness. He made the courageous decision to talk to management and admit he was burned out, but they weren't willing to make changes. So he decided it was up to him to make the change. Hear how he made the shift to academics and the effect this had on the other areas of his life.

You can find John on Linked In or FB. He's also sharing his email if you want to contact him!

If you liked what you heard and want help with your own burnout journey, I'd love to talk. I'm writing a book on how to heal from burnout (due out 1/25), and I have a group coaching starting June 11th.

28 Jun 2023#154: What do you need to get unstuck? MORE (money, time, benefits, bonuses)? or LESS (energy drains, hard tasks, and time sucks)00:23:24

After I listened to this episode on the Hidden Brain podcast I had an ah-ha about how this fits into burnout. We often think we need MORE of something. More help, more money, more vacation time. But what we really need is LESS. We need to find our friction points and minimize them. For example, what if you're a working mom and you have zero time or zero patience after work? Getting a big fat bonus check won't make you get unstuck. But, if you work fewer, but more efficient hours, you'll have more time. What if you didn't have to help the kids with homework and cook supper every night? Identifying your pain points and then brainstorming how to let them be easier will change your life.

19 Apr 2023#144: How do you know when to quit vs when to stay? This huge career decision is broken down into bite size chunks of wisdom from a world-champion poker player00:15:32

I was so blown away by Annie Duke, cognitive psychologist and world champion poker player. Her ideas around quitting are beyond helpful if you're struggling with this decision. As I was listening to an interview with her and I pulled over, grabbed a sheet of paper, and started taking notes. I haven't read the book yet, so this is sort of the Cliff Note version, but if you're on the fence about quitting, please invest the next 15 minutes in listening to this!

And, if you decide you definitely need to make a change, I'm your girl! Well, maybe. Maybe not. Not if you're psycho, ridiculously needy, or have stalker-ish tendencies. Otherwise, reach out if you're a semi-sane person struggling with career stuckness. 22 Sep 2021#80: A real-life Hallmark movie story: Hear how this Mom's life fell apart but she kept her faith the broken pieces would someday be put back together in a new and even better way 00:47:38

When Katie Avery found herself a single mom with three kids, no job, and a broken heart, she kept faith that God had a plan for her life.  Little did she know the plan included her dream job in her dream town and going on dates again with her high school sweetheart.

Take-Home Points:

  1. When your heart is opposed to a decision, you may have physical symptoms like Katie when she wasn't able to catch her breath while running and she was crying all the time.  She knew deep in her heart it wasn't where God needed her to be despite it feeling like what she felt like she should do.  Trust your instincts.
  2. When you feel unloved, unattractive, unappreciated, these are all indications you're out of alignment.
  3. You never know what someone else is going through, even if they look like they have it all together on the outside.
  4. When faced with a difficult decision, ask yourself what you'd tell your child if this situation were happening to her.
  5. Pray through every decision; never lose faith that God has a plan for your life.  Use the hard times as reminders that even though you feel broken, these difficulties can be used as part of your purpose.  And finally, you've gotta be the one to decide to rewrite your story.  You can choose to focus on the pain or you can choose to get healthy, make good choices, and move forward.

09 Mar 2022#104: Part 2 with Dr. Jillian Rigert gets even deeper into burnout, with both of us sharing our stories. We also do an impromptu coaching session over the common thought "I don't have enough money"00:57:42

This interview felt more like two friends and medical professionals sitting down to coffee than a podcast interview.  We talked about our Wayfinder coaching program we're in, we chatted about our burnout stories (and Jillian turned the mic back on me to ask what my own pivots looked like) and we demonstrated a coaching tool on Jillian's thought that she didn't have enough money to sign up for a coaching program.

If you're not on the path you want to be on, but lost the map and aren't sure what to do next, schedule a free mini coaching session to see if we're a good fit and to get a taste of coaching!  Visit www.coachhopecook.com for more info on other packages!

Take-home points from the interview:

  1. Burnout signs may include apathy, not caring as much about doing a good job or disordered eating, physical complaints like not sleeping or headaches or anxiety.
  2. Grinding through/showing grit is a societal expectation.  Burnout is your Essential Self begging you to rest and recover
  3. In order to take time off, you'll come up against a lot of beliefs and thoughts about not being able to afford to take the time off.  It's important to dissect these beliefs and see what's true and what's a thought error.  Byron Katie has a method called "The Work" that helps you question your thoughts.
  4. Identify your support systems at work and home.  Is your job a "people first" type job, or is it all about churning out productivity?
  5. Use therapists or coaches to help you see other options because when you're in the midst of burnout, your brain can't come up with any viable options to get you over the hump.
  6. When to consider therapy: If you've had trauma or grief and haven't addressed it.  Consider coaching if you're functioning but want to function better- we'll teach you the tools for forward momentum
  7. Learning how to feel things in your body is huge because it allows you to identify which thoughts are helpful and which thoughts are causing pain
  8. Often our stories about ourselves aren't embedded in reality.  We feel shame based on false beliefs.  Like, "I'll be fired/perceived as weak" if I admit I'm burned out.

Okay, back to this week's show. This episode stemmed from a discussion (aka argument) with my husband around values. How we spend our time, what's most important to us, etc. My son also pointed out one of my big distractions/addictions later that week and it made me think about how each of us has a safety mechanism in place when we're burned out or super stressed. These aren't bad per se, but they can distract us from the real issue at hand and keep us living in Stuckville.

27 Jun 2024#200 (!!) Can You Believe I've Recorded 200 Episodes! This is a special "Dear Younger Hope" episode of things I wish I could go back and tell myself 00:12:49

When I started my podcast, the idea was to share stories from women who'd done brave things, some had crazy career pivots, some had clawed their way back from the edge of disaster, others had made scary leaps into the unknown. What I didn't realize was that each woman, while she shared her words of wisdom, was mentoring me in the process. The podcast helped give me the courage to step outside my comfort zone and to gather enough strength and courage to make it through burnout. This podcast then morphed into helping others find their way through the dark and scary forest of burnout.

Join me as we celebrate my 200th episode!

11 Jan 2024#176: How to Stop Managing Everyone and Everything Around You So You Can Focus on Your Own Stuff00:17:40

Burnout is like a clogged pipe; it's an ugly mass of hair, toothpaste, dental floss, and who knows what else. It starts months before you realize it with stress and overwhelm. If the stress goes unchecked, you find yourself with a major problem. The funny thing is how we're the ones taking on everyone else's issues--essentially taking on more grossness to create our clog in the first place. What if you were able to Let Go and Let Them (manage their own dang issues)?

03 Feb 2021#29: Listen up! Are you wasting precious minutes and hours complaining and moaning about a situation in your life? Here are three options to help you LET GO00:10:44

Based on my interpretation of a chapter in The Power of Now about the energy associated with complaining.  The book refers to it as "psychic pollution."  Eckhart says we have three choices with matters we find annoying/irksome/frustrating.  We can accept it/surrender, speak up if possible, or change it.  He says all else is madness.  In this episode, I confess how much I've been complaining about my hubby's snoring.  I'll try applying Eckhart's advice.

Meg Leddy is a mom, wife, Physician Assistant in melanoma plastic surgery, and podcaster (host of the podcast:  Burnout, What I Have Learned So Far with Meg Leddy  For those of you struggling with burnout in your jobs, this is the episode for you!  You'll walk away feeling like you've got this!

Take home points:

  1. Burnout usually isn’t a one-time thing, it happens over and over again.  Be on the lookout for the signs: losing sleep, waking at 2 am,reflux or other physical problems, being unusually forgetful or distracted.  Remember, someone can appear to have it all figured out but still be burned out.
  2. Tips: Meg uses Brene Brown's suggestion before falling asleep at night by reminding herself "I am enough, what I did today is enough."
  3. Remind yourself constantly, "The Universe has my back".  This helps you not feel like you have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders and reminds you You don’t get to choose the outcome in life, it’s not all under your control.
  4. Make the choice to match your schedule to your intentions.  Choose your intentions based on your core values (click here to see the Brene Brown exercise Meg used).  Core values are like your compass, they determine where you go in life.
  5. Your job doesn’t define you.  If every piece of you is defined by your job, you’ll burn out.  Bring all those other pieces back into who you are.  Look at who you are outside of work.  We’re not one-dimensional beings.  You can have a slash career.  This can give us more balance and we’ll be better at our jobs.
  6. If you’re self-identifying as burned out, there’s help, there’s something better out there.  Take time. Stop, take time to heal.  Burnout eventually affects your health if you don’t get help.

14 Dec 2022#138: Is perfectionism interfering with your happiness? Is it keeping you from taking action? What to do when you hear that voice telling you you're not good enough00:20:50

Have you proudly proclaimed you're a perfectionist?  I used to think it was a good thing to try and be perfect.  Why settle for mediocrity when you could put forth a little more effort and be perfect?  The problem is, of course, none of us are perfect and we can't maintain that standard.  This is me in my closet chatting with you about my flaws and what I do when the perfectionism monster climbs on my back.

18 Oct 2023#169: Planning Ahead: How Habits and Framework Will Support You Next Time You Get Knocked Down 00:26:41

None of us are immune to down moments, dips in mood, catastrophes and disasters. They're part of life, right? What can you do now (assuming you're not in the throes of a cataclysmic event) to help the Future You get back up when she gets knocked down? Don't worry, these are pretty simple, yet powerful concepts. If you implement even one suggestion, you'll be better prepared the next time sh$% hits the fan.

17 Nov 2021#88: Starting a small business in a very small town, how to use discomfort to grow and how to uplevel when you need new tools and mentors00:27:45

Shelley Kovar was in the same job in a small town in Michigan for 25 years when she began getting asked to help with social media marketing by local small business owners.  Shelley didn't know a lot about Facebook, but she decided to say "yes!" and figure it out as she went.  Her inspiring story proves you can branch out and try new things and you can be successful in any size community.

Take-Home Points!

  • Pay attention when multiple people start asking you for your advice or for you to do something for them, this means  there’s a need in the market and it means they believe you’re good at it
  • Even in a small town you can be an entrepreneur and grow a business.  The key is to build the know, like, and trust factor.  Nurture it.  Look for a need and fill it.
  • When you need to uplevel but you don't have teachers around you to help you grow, invest in yourself.  Sign up for a course or class.  You can’t get to where you want to go if you don’t have people around you to teach and push you to grow.
  • Use discomfort to make you grow or light a fire under your bum.
  • You ARE the company and you need to invest back in the company.   Being around high-energy people will fill your cup up.  Look at it as continuing education.  Invest in yourself.  Seek out positive podcasts, books, and mentors
  • Work smarter, not harder (batch your posts, batch your cooking)
  • You don’t have to be everyone’s perfect person, when you make a  mistake, you’re your biggest critic.  Instead, use the discomfort of imperfection to light a fire =under your bum to make you grow.  Don't be afraid of C+ work

16 Mar 2022#105: Your living space is a metaphor for your life, how a turtle step in one area of your life can catapult you towards BIG changes in your mindset and personal life 00:17:22

Have you ever noticed how if you're scattered and cluttered in one area of your life (your refrigerator or car for example), this might mirror an area of your life where you have scattered relationships or ideas.  Or maybe your life is cluttered with unfinished projects and dreams which is reflected in your bathroom cabinets.  This simple coaching tool can be done in a few minutes but will open your eyes to areas of your life that could benefit from small changes.

08 Feb 2024#180: How To Convince Your Brain to Make Big Career Changes Even When You're Terrified00:25:49

Did you know there are ways to trick your brain into thinking it's safe to take action even when you're scared out of your mind? Nobody wants to make a choice they regret, and we don't want to take a leap without knowing how it'll all turn out. You can't blame the brain for wanting to keep you safe, right? But it can also keep you stuck for YEARS (trust me, I know!)

Listen to this episode to ensure you don't live in Stuckville for the rest of your years.

18 Jan 2023#141: Fear: is it scaring the crap out of you? When to listen to fear and when to act anyway. How to discern intuition vs. fear, and what fear might be telling you00:20:54

Were you scared of things as a kid?  We all were.  Are you still scared of things?  Again, we all are.  But how we handle that fear determines how we live our lives.  How do you know when you need to sit up and pay BIG attention to fear?  I'll also talk about the different kinds of fear.

Included in this episode:  my childhood fear of kidnapping, my fears about my kids, and how fear may have kept my son safe at a birthday party when he was 5.

Are you considering life coaching?  My ideal client is a working woman (usually they're moms but not always) who isn't thrilled with her work life but she feels trapped and isn't sure if she can or should consider quitting.  And yet she goes to work day after day feeling misaligned, out of sorts, and overall meh (or UGH!).

That's my jam, so if you need help, reach out!  Schedule a discovery call here, it's complimentary!

28 Apr 2021#53: Coming out of the closet: Who's in there and what's she waiting on?00:13:03

This episode topic was dreamed up while reading Martha Beck's new book, The Way of Integrity.  Here's a quote from it:  You're trying to act in ways that don't feel right to you at the deepest level.  Emotionally, we feel grumpy, sad, or numb.  Physically, our immune systems and muscles weaken; we might get sick and even if we don't, our energy flattens. Mentally, we lose focus and clarity, that's how it feels to be out of integrity.  -Martha Beck

For at least two years I read every self-help book I could get my hands on.  I saw three different therapists, I listened to career clarity podcasts, but when it came down to it, I knew what I needed to do.  When I read Martha Beck's book, Finding Your Own North Star, I had so many ah-has!  Finally, I was ready to answer those hard questions and take off my blinders.  In this episode, I'll ask you many of those same questions.  Get ready with your pen and paper!

And if you're not a DIY kind of person, let's sit down together with a mug of coffee (or a glass of wine) and I'll ask you all these and more!

14 Apr 2021#49: Why you should fall in love with the boy next door and how to find him. 00:11:29

After my interview last week with Suzanne Kingsbury, I thought about something she said.  She said writing for her was liking coming home to the boy next door.  It had always pulled on her, but she stayed busy with her desk job and ignored the pull.  When she finally decided to take a year off and write, she said it felt like she'd finally allowed herself to fall in love with the boy next door.  He'd been there all along, waiting for her to see him.

In this podcast episode, I explore how to find the boy next door and how to let him into your life again.

29 Oct 2021#85: Why being stuck isn't all suck and what to do while you're killing time waiting to get unstuck00:17:32

In this episode, I discuss Martha Beck's definition of phase 1 of the change cycle, something we all go through many times in our lives.  Being stuck is one way to describe being in this state of immobility and formation.  I'll reveal why being stuck is so important and necessary in the transition to the new you.

How are you feeling stuck right now?  When was the last time you went through a transition to a new chapter or a new version of you?

22 Feb 2024#182: MSL and past president of the largest PA speciality organization gives amazing tips on how to keep your medical career magical and meaningful despite times of burnout00:36:06

Not only does she share how she landed her job, but she also talks about her path to get there and how she managed two little ones, a full-time dermatology job, and held PA leadership positions during the pandemic.

Archana and I met on a Kenya medical mission trip when we were new dermatology PAs, and our most recent escapade was dressing as Tina Turner and Dolly Parton at a Nashville conference. This woman is amazing; you won't regret listening to her interview!

IFS seems to be all the buzz these days--or is it just me because I'm a therapy-addict?  I'll explain how this way of thinking about ourselves can give you a new take on your areas of least satisfaction.  For example, is your inner Perfectionist making your mom-life miserable?  Is your Pleaser keeping you at a job you should've left 2 years ago?  Is your Rebel making trouble in your relationship?

23 Nov 2022#135: How compartmentalizing your life into "air tight pods" will help you be more present and cease all the worry and anxiety about the future. 00:25:23

As we drove the 4 hours to my hometown, I jotted down stories from my life, my clients' lives, and my patients' lives to illustrate how we create pain by living in the future and past.  By living in our cocoon of the present moment, we "seal up" our lives against needless worry and anxiety.

23 Jan 2021#25: What kind of stories are you telling yourself? Are they lies? Could they be the cause of your suffering? Can you change your story and change the path of your life?00:11:09

We create stories in our heads about situations we believe to be true based on past experiences or fear.

A tremendous amount of energy is tied up in these stories.  Our minds create them and eventually they become our beliefs.  Our beliefs determine our actions, which basically determine the trajectory of our lives.

Amanda Pedota and I first met 10 years ago in Kenya.  We were both volunteering in dermatology and serving a rural clinic in the Masa Mara area of Kenya.  Fast forward a decade and she now has 4 little boys.  What amazes me about my friend is how she still does cool things, not letting diapers and nap time interfere with traveling to cool places.  She also describes what so many of us moms struggle with--how to not lose ourselves after having kids.  Amanda found that she was an enthusiastic cook of savory foods, so when she landed on an amazing biscuit recipe she thought "why not?" She's started a cottage biscuit business and is learning as she goes.

09 Nov 2022#133: What to do if you're not ready to take a giant leap into the unknown: For those who don't necessarily want to quit their jobs, they just wish things were different and better. 00:25:12

My life coaching mentor, Martha Beck, has used the metaphor of swinging from a rope swing to help clients determine if they need to jump, keep swinging for a while, or stay on the safety of the rock for a while longer.  Maybe you've considered taking a leap, but something tells you it isn't time.  Or maybe there are things you can do to make your current job be a better fit so you don't have to jump off into the unknown.

If this episode resonates and you'd like to explore your "leaping options" with me, click here to set up a complimentary discovery call or check out my website for free resources.

16 Jun 2021#65: Don't like something about your life? Your expectations may very well have created this reality you call life. The good news? Like Amazon, you can always order up something different 00:16:00

I share personal details of what my expectations have been lately for marriage, kids, etc.  and how I tried an experiment to change my reality by changing my expectations.

20 Oct 2021#84: Just because you've never done it doesn't mean you CAN'T do it. Today's guest tells about her journey to create a safe and natural skincare line with no entrepreneurial experience. 00:43:04

Andree Terry didn't let inexperience stop her in her tracts.  She recognized a gap in the market for a line of skincare products safe for the fragile skin of cancer patients, so she set off on a journey of learning how to create products from industry giants like Loreal and Clairol.  She traveled to Egypt and Europe, learning about ancient techniques and skincare ingredients used for centuries.

Andree's products were so successful, they were chosen as one of the elite gifts in swag bags for the Grammy's and are now shipped all over the country.

01 Feb 2024#179: Tricks to Deciphering and Dissolving Your Bad Energy (with a confession about my own jealousy)00:18:25

I recorded an entirely different episode, but the energy was definitely off. It took a walk around the block to decipher why. I was having a hard time with jealousy. Not something I'm proud of, but I decided if I'm struggling with it, maybe some of you are, too.

Here's how I shook it off, used it as good information, and reversed the effects.

13 Sep 2023#165: Why You Shouldn't Jump Off the Struggle Bus into Oncoming Traffic (yet). How to make burnout and other struggles work in your favor. 00:27:30

Show notes:

1. The Journey Begins: Understanding the Struggle Bus:

  • We kick things off by talking about the notorious "struggle bus." We've all been there, right? Feeling stuck and overwhelmed in your career, your relationships, or with another person. Today, we're going to break it down.

2. What if you saw your struggles as tests in the classroom of life?

  • Life presents us with tests, and passing the tests helps you move to the next level. I'll share a few tests I've faced and we'll explore how we can look at life through the lens of "earth school"

4. Embracing Imperfection:

  • Perfection? Not our goal here. Let's discuss the importance of embracing imperfections and understanding that they're all part of our journey.

5. Unpacking the Purpose:

  • Time for some introspection. What's the point of your current struggle? How can you learn and grow from it? We'll uncover the wisdom hidden within challenges.

6. Stay in Your Lane:

  • Comparison is a tricky game. I'll teach you why it's crucial to focus on your unique path and not get caught up in comparing your struggles to others.

7. Self-Reflection and Journaling:

  • Grab your pen and paper, folks. We're diving into self-reflection and journaling. These tools are essential for processing emotions and finding clarity during challenging times.

8. Emotional Intelligence and Coping Strategies:

  • Let's explore emotional responses and healthier ways to cope with life's challenges. Building emotional resilience is a key lesson.

9. Rewrite Your Story: Shifting Self-Labels:

  • What if you could change how you see yourself? I'll show you how envisioning a different narrative for yourself can lead to personal growth and transformation.

10. Paying It Forward: Inspiring Others:

  • Lastly, we'll talk about the ripple effect. Sharing your experiences and wisdom with others is a powerful way to inspire personal growth in yourself and those around you.

Conclusion:

  • Remember to embrace your unique journey, accept life's tests, and keep your focus on the big picture. What is this teaching you or what could it teach you if you let it?

If you've found value in this episode, I'd love to hear from you or meet with you on zoom to explore whether life coaching might help you with your ride on the struggle bus.

06 Oct 2021#82: Squeezing the most out of your life! Hear Amy Lawrence's amazing journey from slinging whiskey to teaching and then deciding to become a juice entrepreneur 00:49:13

Amy's energy and enthusiasm are contagious!  She'll have you laughing out loud at her stories of becoming a bartender, then teaching 8-year-olds, and finally deciding to become an entrepreneur and sell juice.  She shares her personal journey with rheumatoid arthritis and IBS and how this led to learning what her body needed to be healthy and thriving.

  1. Have the spirit of 8 yr old.  They show up, they're an enthusiastic Big Fat Yes, they don't sweat yesterday or today.
  2. Ask yourself if you are living the life you want to live or the life you think you're supposed to live?  Are you making decisions based on what you truly want or on what you think others expect you to do?  Realize it's okay to disappoint others.
  3. You can fail but not be a failure.  The success comes from getting up over and over.  If you're so obsessed with not failing and being perfect, you'll miss the journey
  4. Squeeze the day.  Focus on how you can make the best out of each day.   Be a "Yes" and make everyone feel better when they come in contact with you.  Show up in that day and be the best person you can be.
  5. Know what fills your bucket.  For Amy, it's serving people, being busy, being passionate about food.
  6. Instead of asking "what if it doesn't work", ask "what if it does?"   Likewise, ask yourself what's going well instead of noticing all the things not going well.
  7. People are willing to teach you if you're willing to learn  Figure out how to do things yourself by asking questions like Amy did with her electrician, her plumber, etc.
  8. Think long term in terms of health, it's what you do every single day, not just a 3 day cleanse here and there.  Aim for long-term health.  You didn't get to this place overnight, make small choices every day and they'll add up.  Each human body is unique and you have to figure out what's best for you.  You've gotta be willing to love yourself enough and think that you're worth it to put forth the effort.

Even if you don't have a religious bone in your body, you won't want to miss this episode.  We're all here with various gifts and talents to be used while we're alive.  How the heck do you figure out what you're supposed to be doing?  What if that "something" no longer feels right?  How do you know it's time to pivot?  Laura shares her own journey from music history to ministry with honesty about all the ups and downs of feeling pulled towards one thing and having it lead to a dead-end or change into a new calling.
