15 Aug 2019Edward Curtis, the Graybills & drinking with John Lennon01:37:52

John and Coleen Graybill help run the Curtis legacy foundation and their other business Mountain Spirit photo.  John is a direct descendant of Edward Curtis, a photographer from the late 1800’s/early 1900's who famously photographed the native Americans. John’s foundation is key to protecting and showcasing the work of this photographer.

If you don’t know who he was, then dont worry, keep listening, but in short he took thousands of dry plate photographs over a 30 year period.  Because of his subject matter, it was important work in terms of culture and history.

Please do listen in to this interview, you find will out about how John & Coleen are attempting to photograph the descendants of the original subjects too, using the same techniques (Descendants project).

So stayed tuned to learn about JP Morgan, Teddy Roosevelt, General Custer and how history was re-written.

We also discuss:

  • Portrait tents
  • Persecution of Native Americans

10 Nov 2021Andrew Bartram - The fens, skateboards and workshops01:09:50

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 160 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Today I talk with a fellow countryman and even has the same name, so 2 Andrew's for the price of one - bargain!  Some of you film fans will know Andrew Bartram from his podcasting - on both the "lensless podcast" or the "large format photography podcast". He is one of those genuine souls you find the in community who doesn't mind helping anyone.  After working in the same industry for 40 years Andrew felt like a change and now he's spending some time teaching others through the "Fenland Darkroom".  Personally I think its a fab thing to do and he's hitting a group of people that often miss out - so listen out why.

He has experience with various types of film, cameras up to large format, different processes like tin types and decades in the darkroom. Andrew is frequently found on social media helping out and blogging too.

So in this one we talk about:

  • workshops
  • pricing
  • washi film
  • memory killers
  • ortho film
  • x-ray film
  • contact prints
  • collecting

News

Recently i've had some annual leave from the day job so been in the darkroom. It's been great to be back and playing around with ideas. I would never know how to classify my work or what I do. I have a liberal approach to my art, sure this is science but most of it is experimenting. Recently I have played with perspectives, tried montage/mirroring, used blue some dye and old paper. This weeks guest has got me thinking too, so let's see.

I'm pleased to say my film washi project has now completed too - this is the one that involved the smallest film company in the world and a 72 exposure camera.  It was a lot of fun sending this off to random people around the UK and France.  Of course we were delayed by covid so it's taken a little time.  Anyway watch out for an article soon on this.

06 Oct 2021Episode 155 - the week that wasn't00:01:23

There is no show this week due to my cold/flu.  Been struggling for a week and losing my voice, so had to cancel 3 interviews and may mean no podcast for 1 or 2weeks.

Sorry all but back soon.

In the meantime I have wrote a short article on Washi film - https://phlogger.co.uk/shooting-washi-film-architecture-filters-and-portraits/ It's a great company so do check them out - links in the article.

16 Jun 2021J Jason Lazarus - Electrons, Gameboys and inspiring others01:20:13

Welcome to episode 139 of photography insights and I'm your host Andrew Walmsley.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography field from across the globe.

Today I'm really excited to share with you another great force in education and photography.  J Jason Lazarus is an educator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  Not only that but Jason loves interesting alternative or historic processes and having fun.  You can tell from our conversation he is really in to his ability to educate others and keep pushing forward.  He teaches the history of photography and talks about the importance of updating his students with his own work.  It's all about motivating others but keeping up to date and pushing yourself.

Jason is also part of an "untapped group" where the idea is to meet up in person and provide encouragement and critique for people's images.  There are so many different projects Jason has worked on, from Mordançage, to chemigrams, cyanotype or shooting on a Gameboy!  Hope you enjoy looking through his array of images.

Anyway, he's a very approachable guy and we had so much fun, so enjoy this one.  I really struggled to edit this one down as he's got such a great body of work.  It was even interesting to talk about how different life is because of the lack of sunlight and seasons in Alaska, but alas I had to cut so much.  Maybe I will send running a patreon service and those of you that are crazy can listen to us for hours!

Here are a few things we discussed:

  • playing with processes
  • printing van dyke brown
  • electron scanning microscope
  • macro photography
  • cyanotypes
  • anna atkins
  • mordancage (remember accent on the c)
  • gameboy shooting
  • dot matrix printers
  • chemigram
  • inspiring others + pushing you

16 Feb 2022Shin Yatagai - Blur, paintings and visions01:05:58

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 171 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

For this episode we jump across the ocean to Japan and talk with Shin Yatagai. He's another young photographer with some beautiful work behind him.  Initially a recommend by the one and only Johan Brooks from episode 158. Shin's work is about attention to detail rather lens sharpness or quality.  He finds a concept, plans and executes this work with an artistic flair.  I have to thank Shin for speaking in English too, considering he only lived in the UK for a year and doesn't speak very often.

I really enjoyed talking to Shin, he's down to earth and shy but very creative.  He even speaks freely about living with ADHD and how he copes with his photography.  We had some laughs and discussed:

  • inspirations from paintings
  • classic photography
  • capture one
  • making a vision
  • capturing movement
  • directing models
  • culture + non-traditional clothing
  • textures + structures
  • self portraiture

25 Aug 2021Sarah Manriquez - boudoir, homeless & safety01:11:08

I'm Andrew Walmsley and welcome to episode 149 of photography insights.  This is the show that goes behind the scenes and interviews people from the world of photography.

Today I'm pleased to talk with Sarah Manriquez, a friend of Jason Lazrus and Kat Reichert from the Fairbanks university in Alaska.  It's a tale of boudoir, homeless and safety.  Boudoir in the sense of her fabulous fine art project photographing a classic era of the past.  Safety in the sense of working as a model and working with others.  Jason recommended Sarah because of her work around the homeless.  It's an amazing project based on helping others have a platform to show what its like.  Through her "genesis" and "through our eyes" we talk about a lady called Felicia, her new life and where she has come from. It's thought provoking work, deeply personal to Sarah and something that needs the eye of the masses.

Anyway, I don't want to give too much away, so lets just highlight a few topics we discussed:

  • xylene process
  • film noir
  • risks
  • bloom project
  • visiting professors
  • homelessness
  • point and shoot cameras
  • effects of covid

I wanted to share with you some feedback from a couple of recent guests. Here is a recent Facebook one from Kathleen Dreier

"Andrew Ian Walmsley is a gem of a human being. He takes great care to research the work of his guests, asking engaging questions that allow the person being interviewed to look at themselves and their work even more deeply. Andrew is sensitive, genuinely interested, and easy to speak with. Even though I was across the world from him, I instantly felt like I was sharing a living room space a good friend. I think Andrew should be wildly supported for his efforts to showcase the work of photographers from around the world. He is lovely."

I will share another next weeks too.

I'm pleased to introduce you to Adam Lee aka "adams walks".  He's a guy who loves travelling on foot and camping around.  Recently he walked the entire length of the UK with a donkey named Martin!!!  It's a fascinating story a man and a pack animal, how they learnt about each other and kept plodding on.  He managed to write on his blog a little about this and even from the perspective of Martin the donkey - which is funny, so check out the links.

Fingers crossed Adam will get published too, as he's working on a book about his trip (one of a few).  Adam's also work on long term plans to walk China with a mule for company.

16 Dec 2020The Yellow Rose Project with Frances Jakubek and Meg Griffiths01:16:41

Today I'm really honored and pleased to bring you a different episode of photography insights.  After speaking with Sheri Behr recently she put me in contact with this amazing project called the yellow rose project.  It’s run by 2 lovely people Meg Griffiths and Frances Jakubek.  When I researched their work I felt very privileged to talk to them as it's all about the right for women to vote in America with the 19thamendment.  The link to photography is that it was 100 years, so they’ve put together a collective of female artists.  The 105 ladies have made something that symbolizes the movement, the suffrages, and yellow rose elements.  This type of history is something to talk about and learn from.

Meg herself is a fine art photographer and educator at Texas woman’s university. Frances is head of exhibitions at Bruce Silverstein gallery in New york.  We manage to talk about Meg's book - looking at this from a non-gendered perspective and not labeled.  It was nice to talk about Frances's self-portrait project too.

Personally, I hope you enjoy this podcast as much I did it making it, Frances and Meg were full of smiles.  You can see they are friends too as they rarely interrupted each other.

In this one we discuss:

  • voting rights
  • exhibition + online content
  • history from different voices
  • suffrage movement
  • unconscious mind + intuition
  • art emergencies
  • dealing with groups
  • right gallery
  • nudity, ego + self-portraiture
  • creating books

16 Mar 2022A catch up with Ethan Moses00:51:32

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 173 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Today we get to catch up with Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl.  I hadn't spoken to Ethan since November 2019 but always followed his work.  When he was running a recent project I couldn't help but be interested.  Ethan has been playing with "afghan" cameras as they call them, huge 20x24 bits of technology.  Not only that but he's been using the ra4 process to make his own version of instant positive prints!

Ethan's personality always shines through, a man who can't stop playing and inventing.  So in this one listen out for:

  • instax + polaroid film
  • Elsa Dorfman
  • Zorki/Fed/Kiev + Pentacons
  • Mongoose + Meerkat
  • Making cameras
  • Repairing & playing
  • Selling to the industry

18 Apr 2020Coping with covid - report from a health worker on the front line00:41:20

As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic.  We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening.

Today's guest stands out in some ways because of his role in life - health care. Today I want you to welcome David Collyer who works as an anaesthetist assistant in a hospital in Abergavenny, Wales, UK.

David joined the show with his son Ned on episode 61 in 2019 and was very popular due to the unique relationship.  He spends his time documenting all manner of subjects from portraiture to landscapes and everyday life.  David has a very good eye for detail and showing characters, whilst being able to develop his own work (yes another film shooter).

However, that is not his full story, David also has been given permission to shoot inside his hospital and help document about the crisis.

So listen to this show as we talk about:

  • health protection equipment
  • UK predicated figures
  • private medical care
  • Queen's toilet seat
  • work/life balance
  • shooting Covid on film
  • NHS funding
  • time off & hobbies

Covid

93,000 infected

12,100 deaths as of 13 April

15 Dec 2021Christmas 2021 with Eoghan Hennessy and Christopher Osborne01:14:33

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 165 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Over the last few years I have always wanted to do a christmas special which would have to be different.  After rummaging around my mind I finally came up with a plan and invited a couple of analogue shooting friends on to the show.  So this will break off for the normal interview style and will focus on the world of analogue and christmas obviously.

I'm pleased to invite Eoghan Hennessey (prounounced Owen) and of course I messed that up several times.  Also from the world of silvergrain and film we have the esteemed Christopher Osborne.  Both guests are great film shooters, active in our UK film group but also fun to talk to, hence why they are here.

If you are ready for the show, it's themed around the 3 ghosts, past; present and the future, meaning we all cover an element each. So we will be talking about what we miss, what we want and expect in the future!

Not only that but Eoghan and Christopher have agreed to take part in my barmy christmas quiz too - it's a bit of my usual type questions with some sensible ones too.  It's a lot of fun so do listen for that.

So in this one we cover:

  • Film subscriptons
  • Grant Brittain
  • Pin hole
  • Kodak/Ilford/Orwo/cinestill,Fuji +Lomography
  • Film scanning
  • Intrepid
  • Kosmo Foto

02 Mar 2022Matilde Simas - Human rights, cybersex + trafficking01:11:58

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 172 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Today we get to talk about documentary photography and about subject that is worth you knowing about.  When I first approached Matilde Simas about her work I was interested in her approach and how she worked given the difficult subject.  So to better explain Matilde is a documentary photographer from Boston in the USA.  Matilde is a graduate of psychology, a humanitarian (founded Capture Humuanity which we discuss) , parent and photographer.  The work is all about human rights and has had her work across galleries around the world.

Matilde herself is a lovely person and the work is about careful thought of representing this subject matter,  It's been achieved with some class, dignity and respect of the survivors of trafficking.  Trafficking is one of the subjects we have heard about but don't always know  much about.  There maybe some sad parts to the interview as it's pretty emotional stuff hearing about this, but I urge you to carry on.

You can see more of her work and the countries she has been to on her website and this will provide a better focus of the problems in that area.  It's not something that is happening in third world countries either, it happens everywhere as you will hear!

We also approach the topic of the Massai warriors and female genital modification too, which again is another human right issue in many countries.  Having choice is not always clear or straight forward, despite the health concerns.

So in this one:

  • support, shelters & psychological help
  • NGO's
  • vulnerability
  • forced labour, marriage and servants
  • cybersex
  • re-trafficking
  • FGM
  • Massai customs
  • portraiture

18 Sep 2019Clay McBride - interview with a music photographer00:55:36

Welcome to episode 58 of Photography insights, your one-stop guide to interviews with people in the photography industry.  This time we feature the amazing Clay Patrick Mcbride from New York City.

He is a senior lecturer at the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York where he teaches advertising photography.

Throughout his career as a magazine photographer, he has worked on many assignments with famous musicians like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Norah Jones.  You can see many examples of this on his website (see links for info).  He tries to leave time to use film too in his work and loves his 5x4 camera.

*** quick disclaimer, there are a few swear words in this episode, very minimal though ***

We talk about different areas as he's one cool guy, these include:

  • Inspire through quality
  • Norah Jones/kid rock
  • Research your subject
  • Being authentic
  • Music/assignment photography
  • Work from the ground floor
  • Building relationships
  • Why shoot film
  • Using polaroids for print s

Discussed:

  • Shooting eggs to understand lighting
  • Podcasting as a learning platform

RANDOM QUESTIONS

Clay also goes through my random questions so find out why he breaks the rules and punches everyone!  Also, we put bets on how famous N.F will be in 10 years time compared to Eminem! (yes, I will be wrong).

08 Dec 2021Emilio Cresciani - cuts, rubbish & spills01:05:35

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 164 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

One day I was sending hello messages to people that had recently followed me on Instagram. I usually check out their images and websites, so I can decide if I'm going to follow their work.  As you imagine I follow a lot of people and try to keep a small number of close people to engage with.  After Emilio Cresciani followed me I was intrigued and after seeing his projects I messaged him through Instagram and here we are!

Emilio is an artist from Australia who sees beauty in elements all around us.  It was fun talking to Emilio for his laid back personality as you will soon find out.  He's a caring person too who teaches people with disabilities and worked in care previously as well.  What's even more interesting is his project based work - like "remains of the day".  A great project looking at waste and how humans are affecting this world.

When talking about his oil slicks, we are looking at what comes out the ground is driping back in to the ground.  Don't get me started on his car screen's too, buying over 30 of these and making art out of these.  Honestly he's able to see patterns and something interesting and use different photography processes to make art.  As we finish the conversation we talk about awards and competitions, then finally memories of his grandad.

So in this one look out for:

- recycle + waste

- negative consequences

- metallic paper

- shooting roadside

- rain

- safety glass

- iphone vs photograms

- making a lightbox

- working with ice

Review

You may have seen on social media recently, I posted the latest iTunes review.  It certainly made me laugh its a pretty bad one but everyone is entitled to an opinion so here goes.

"Don’t bother"

Worst interviewer in history. Mumbles. Interrupts. Wouldn’t know an intelligent question if it fell on him.

All I can say is, whatever you are doing now, just stop. Go leave a review and help me cancel this out. I can handle criticism, but we all know the statements are incorrect. I'm not the worst interviewer, just one of them, oh well you have to laugh.

Welcome to photography insights I’m your host Andrew Walmsley.  This is the show that interviews people from around the photography world.

Kathryn Reichert is today's guest, all the way from New Yersey, New York. Kathryn's work is all about a combination of alternative processes, painting and intaglio printing. We came across her work through the wondeful Jason Lazarus from episode 139.  I really liked Kat's projects - from the how my son sees it, to genetically modified and hynagogia. There are fun and meaningful works for you all to look at.

In this one we discuss:

  • buying toys
  • working with flash & long exposure
  • being a student
  • creating work
  • solar plates

After speaking with Kat I came up with a new project which involves Kat first. You cannot sign up for this one, it choses you - so keep watching Instagram for news of this.

In other news i'm really proud to say after listening to all these artists I have come up with a personal project. So what I have done is put another website together dedicated just to my photography.  it's a clean and simple site, no blogging or podcasting - just my art and experiments.  Only a few friends have seen this work - it's deeply personal and most images will have a story or meaning to them.  Anyway hope you find to check that out, link is in the show notes but its just "awalmsley.art"

30 Jun 2021Cat Gwynn - authenticity, cats and iPhones01:08:00

Welcome to the cat show (aka episode 141 of photography insights), the show that interviews people from the photography world.  I'm your host Andrew Walmsley and today we have a guest from Los Angeles.  Cat Gwynn has Welsh ancestry (as you will find out) who is a photographer, writer, teacher, talker and mindfulness practitioner.

Cat has such a fun personality, that we decided to name this one the cat show - well she has the flashing neon light, so why not. We covered so much from laughs to the reality of life in this one so bare with us!

When I first started talking with Cat about her projects I just couldn't wait to talk, the projects she has worked on are lovely.  From the fun of "the cat is me" and "smoking dudes" to the serious tones of "Cry".  Cat's life has had ups and downs, like surviving through cancer.  She talks about her life through this disease and how she made her infamous "10 mile radius" project.  So in this one we will discuss:

  • lockdowns & gata blanca
  • Michael Kirchoff
  • creating a book
  • cats & mannerisms
  • meeting in person
  • shooting on an iPhone
  • meeting on facebook
  • buddhism
  • irony
  • questions from the Phlogger's daughter!

Also find out the name of Cat's future pet cat too.  Of course we go through my random questions too!

21 Oct 2020Phlogger projects + social media changes00:40:28

So it's a quieter week for you all for a change.

COVID caused some last-minute issues for this week, so we've had to change the lineup.  In this episode, you get to listen to me all the way through!

I'm talking to you about projects - why you should participate, why you should create one, some of the steps involved, and lessons I have learned.  In this one, I'm going to quickly talk about changes made with my social media work.

It's quite confusing to see yourself putting time and effort into media with so-called "activity" according to statistics, but when viewing/listeners figures don't increase it's pointless.  So I'm talking to you about what I have done instead and why.

In this one we all discuss:

02 Sep 2020Interview with Lorenzo Mittiga - underwater photographer01:19:39

Hi everybody I’m so thrilled to bring you yet another first – an underwater photographer for episode 99!  I was sat reading my copy of the technology/science magazine WIRED and came across some different photos.  It was all about reefs and a project involving them with some beautiful photographs by a gentleman called Lorenzo Mittiga.  After checking his work I was really impressed and contacted him.  Lorenzo was nothing but intriguing and fun to communicate with, he must have been as excited as me

Lorenzo’s work is known around the world for his images and works in documentaries, like natural history. By trade, his is a marine biologist but left that in Italy to work more in the field.

He’s an intelligent guy who can speak 3 languages and luckily one of them was English.  Lorenzo lives on the Dutch island of Bonaire in the Caribbean. He also talks about living and working as a photographer, so its a tale of weddings, portraiture, food, and anything else!

Lorenzo talks to us about his start in photography and shooting film, all the way through to digital.   He gladly provides details of his kit and how hard it is underwater.  He’s got some lovely split over/underwater projects too, which are very different photographically speaking.

In this one we talk about:

  • Issues with film underwater
  • Ektachrome & Velvia
  • working with Jack Cousteau
  • working with windsurfers
  • issues with sand
  • camera housings
  • how depth can affect u
  • water & natural filters
  • underwater flash
  • lemon sharks
  • the iguana shot

14 Apr 2020Coping with covid - report from Los Angeles00:54:35

As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic.  We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening.

Today's guest is Paul Lefko, another good friend of mine from the West coast of America - Los Angeles.  Paul was one of the few that used Instagram as a platform in a good way and we became mates through.  So much so not only has Paul appeared on the podcast on episode 21, back in 2018, but also co-hosted a few shows with me! We have been mates for a while now and finally got to meet up last year while he had a layover in the UK.

Paul is not only a great photographer, who shoots models and aspiring musicians around Hollywood but also a great travel photographer too.  However, that is not his full story, Paul is also a full-time therapist and a father of two.

So listen to this show as we talk about:

  • schools + Chromebooks
  • future of teaching
  • unemployed
  • a cleaner earth
  • ventilators, ICU & staying at home
  • hospital costs  + health insurance
  • E.R. staff laid off
  • Paul's work + telephone medication
  • working remotely

Photography

Paul also briefly talks about finding a Fuji x100 in his gear and compares this to a Leica CL he's just playing with.  Since his travels to Africa last year, he's been invited back to help with future workshops too, so exciting times to come!

16 Apr 2020Coping with covid - report from Australia00:41:53

As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic.  We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening.

Today's guest is Ashley Hoff, another nice guy I met on Instagram and lives in Adelaide, Australia.  Ashley's work caught my eye as he uses analogue technology (medium format and tin types etc) to capture images of old cars.  He appeared on the show podcast on episode 20, back in 2018, but unfortunately, I had issues with the technology at the time.

Ashley works in technology supporting the finance industry in Australia and has worked at home for 4 weeks now.  So listen to see how life is on the other side of the world.

In this one we discuss

  • state by state decisions
  • tin type experiments
  • cruise ship
  • border closes
  • travel & tourism future
  • health care
  • space + garden footprints
  • schools + grades
  • beaches & socialising
  • shopping, supplies + panic buying

My favourite line from the chat was - "my kingdom for a roll of toilet paper"

Covid figures

As of 12 April there are 6,300 cases and have been 59 deaths in Australia

07 Oct 2020James lane – alchemy, epilepsy & james bond01:10:11

Recently I’ve been talking with friends about developing, my mistakes, and how to improve after recently going back to development.  It’s been interesting to improve my results, so being more careful in preparation has been good.  After speaking with James Lane about developing we became friends and started talking to different developers etc.  Now although James is young, he has a scientific persona and can hear how enthusiast he is for alchemy!  He loved it so much he started developing for customers and runs his own lab!

James talks to us about why he’s different from other labs and spends time talking to us about making your own chemicals. He’s got some top-secret plans he’s working on and has an interesting future ahead of him.  I love his passion for pushing film, controlling contrast and grain.

What’s interesting about James lab (zone imaging lab) is you can choose the developer!  He even has explanations on his website what each one does.  I think this is a great unique selling point and makes him stand out.

In this one:

- spending 3 hours with a reel

- light leaks

- custom pushing technique

- increasing negative density

- epilepsy

- career choices

- trying new developers

- pyro 510

- beta testing XTOL killer

14 Oct 2020Ben Felten - cyanotypes and multi exposures on film01:22:31

Hey everybody, welcome to this week's podcast with me your host the Phlogger.  As I explore this medium of photography and play around I become interested in many areas.  One of these that always springs to mind is a double exposure.  I remember when running my competitions with Kodak Alaris that there was a few multi-exposure entries.  In fact, one of them by Ben Felten won a memorable mention and obviously stuck in my conscious mind.  So I thought hell I had not interviewed someone who does this consistently with film so let’s get him on the show.  Ben was very willing and I couldn’t wait to talk with him.

Now bear in mind Ben is from France, but has lived in a few countries and currently living in Hong Kong.  So if you are expecting a heavy French accent you might be surprised.

Anyway, Ben’s a family man like myself and a very decent guy.  After speaking with Ben I’ve come up with the idea of an act of random kindness every day.  So you search for someone on Instagram and share their picture on your story - simple.  it would be great to hear of you doing this too.  Remember karma everyone, do something nice for someone and feel positive.

So this podcast is all about Ben’s pursuit of happiness with multi-exposure and his human nature project.  It’s a learning journey and he talks to us about the technical and conceptual aspects too, so very useful.

So in this one we discuss:

  • multi-exposure
  • background choices
  • shooting Xpan
  • studio vs home sessions
  • negative space vs busy backgrounds
  • cyanotypes
  • photograms
  • hong kong restrictions
  • zines

20 Nov 2019Interview with light painter Denis Smith01:09:07

In this show, we interview a guy from across the other side of the world, in a diverse country called Australia.  Denis Smith is not only an Olympus visionary but someone who shoots long exposure.  He creates amazing images of orbs and other patterns using long exposure + a multitude of tools.  Some of these are made by his company and sold through his online store.

What made me want to interview Denis was his story, it's one with a turbulent past.  He had a life-changing event that made him become who he is now - a great person and friend to all.  We do talk in an open and brutal manner about mental health with men.

Through his meetups and workshops, he's able to teach people why he loves light painting so much.  Denis talks about light painting and how easy it is to get started and why do-it-yourself is an important part of the process.

I would urge anyone to check the website for the full experience, where Denis's video will be available and some example shots.

Podcast contains:

  • Meetups vs workshops
  • photography changes your life
  • 10 years shooting
  • battling mental health issues
  • flicker group ( lightjunkies )
  • social media
  • Long exposure
  • Diy tools
  • Experimentation
  • Olympus visionary

Of course, we get to have some fun with Denis, so listen out why we talk about:

  • Ski jumping long exposure
  • Strip joints for 90-year-olds
  • The perfect way to clean your lens
  • A pint of denis rodman

02 Oct 2019Interview with experimental photographer Leon Broomhead00:52:24

For episode 60 I'm delighted to bring you a quality photographer and friend of mine too - Leon Broomhead.  Leon is what you might call an experimental photographer, shooting styles that involve fashion and abstract but not directly.

What can I say about Leon, well he is a thoughtful guy, who thinks a lot about his work and how to get the desired outcome.  His work is all about pushing boundaries both in a technical way and artistic.  I’ve met up with Leon many times and its always been a pleasure.  Sharing the same types of photography has helped both of us.  Having a passion for film photography has always been part of our lives and conversations, so i’m glad to share a little with you.

In this show we discuss:

  • Fuji 6x9
  • Model expectations
  • Art nude/fashion photography
  • Shooting for yourself
  • Internet police + conforming
  • Physical contact vs social interaction
  • Talented models
  • Long exposure modes

02 Jun 2021Teresa Meier - beer, cats + time travel01:15:11

Welcome to the latest episode of photography insights, the show that interviews people from the photography world.  I'm your host Andrew Walmsley and today we are going to look at some creative composites.  For episode 137 we managed to talk with Terese Meier from Oregon in the USA, who produces beautiful photo illustrations and dreamy composites.  Teresa is a skilled lady who can be seen hand making elements in her design including clothing.  She seems a jack of all trades and can take to wood and illustration by hand too - very gifted i know!  I really do have to thank Jonah for the introduction too.

Teresa has a variety of work, from her impressions of dream like montages to portraiture and self portraiture too.  You should always be on the look out for her cats too, quite often featured in the periphery. It was such a blast talking to Teresa as she has a great and funny attitude to life.  There was lots of laughter and we even solved world problems - so don't forget to hand on till the end for my random questions.

I became interested in Teresa's work because the projects like collective intentions where you can see a central idea but carried out in such a beautiful and bizarre way.  We briefly talk about "there's no place like home" too, as I wondered how her partner copes with her sets and getting involved.  We time travel back to her first photoshop image too of her infamous cat in a great setting, so please do check that out.

In this one we discuss:

  • composites with photoshop
  • expressing herself
  • self portraiture
  • lockdown anxiety
  • working with your partner
  • stitching images
  • 48x72 inch prints!
  • Cats + pets

For this episode we present a special one off edition. It's a highlight of random questions from the guests during 2018. They are not picked on any specific merits, but chosen some of those that worked well. The whole point is to think out of the box and push the guest in to a different frame of mind. The responses are what really made the questions so great. Because of these we can write more for future guests. For anyone thinking of being interviewed, take a quick listen for what you may have to face! 08 Sep 2021Paula Tognarelli - curating, diversity and teamwork01:04:34

I'm Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 151 of photography insights.  The show that interviews people from the photography world.

In this weeks show I have a person who has been talked about so much. Many of fine art guests have talked about the Griffin museum and a lady called Paula Tognarelli.  So we managed to arrange a suitable time and here we are!

First off I should say thanks to all my friends for recommending her.  Paula is simply a lovely character who cares deeply about the museum and the artists.  From the long days in the office, to searching Instagram in the early hours of the morning. She does not stop hunting for great people to work with.  It's clear from our conversation she really enjoys the world of photography and also missed taking part herself. After 20 years at the Griffin museum you can understand her quest to retire and get back to her ideas.  Coming from a family of inventors hopefully she will find time to execute some of her thoughts!

In this one we discuss:

  • curators
  • mindsets
  • diversity
  • portfolio reviews
  • advice for artists
  • passions
  • teamwork

Paula also goes through my random questions so find out which film she recommends you don't watch!

Shout out

I wanted to share with you some feedback from a guest who is now my friend. This one is from Kat Reichert

I had the pleasure of speaking with Andy recently and found him to be not only an approachable and kind guy, but one of those who immediately feels like one of your favorite family members. You know the type- the ones who are easy going, non-judgmental, helpful AND fun to bounce ideas around with. He is humble, curious and just lovely, overall. Our interview honestly flew by and had there been time I felt like we easily could have talked for hours.

Of his podcast in general- there is something for everyone. He has interviewed such a wide variety of talent on topics ranging from science to alt pro to the human experience and just about everything in between. Check it out, there is guaranteed to be someone on there you will connect with. I've been exposed to so many photographers I hadn't heard of prior and have had a huge takeaway from all of them."
10 Feb 2021Remote shooting and modelling during Covid with Sadie Minton01:04:01

For episode 122 I would like to introduce you to a new face in the modelling word.  Sadie Minton started modelling in March 2020 - yes what a time to start eh!  So after one shoot we were in lock down and this changed her future.  Sadie started arranging these remote shoots as luckily she has the equipment us photographers need.  This was because she had been around cameras through her life due to father. So Sadie tells us about the creative and physical element of remote shooting, from equipment to sets and lighting.

Learning from her job in the world of dance, Sadie was well versed at standing in front of people.  This is why she believes it provided her with an advantage over those started in modelling first.  Considering its only been a year she's done some very interesting shots, that could easily work on magazine covers and adverts.  Seems like a lot of photographers have benefited from her imaginative ways to use light and sets well!

Sadie has done so well from this work she's formed a partnership with a photographer called Johnny Boom.  They are now working together and coming up with plans for workshops to help us all!

Please check out my website for supporting images we discussed and all will remain clearer.  But anyway in this one we talk about:

  • being on stage
  • group shoots
  • body confidence
  • importance of communication
  • planning vs spontaneity
  • memories
  • remote shooting
  • nudity
  • using whats around
  • personality
  • styling

05 Jan 2022Kathrin Federer - Anxiety, NFT's & Spies01:12:07

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 166 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Welcome to 2022 everybody, happy new year. It will be interesting to see what this year brings.  Sorry the slack service recently I decided to take time off and relax (literally no photography at all). Podcast schedule should return to normal soon, so just bear with me if there are any gaps.

I'm pleased to present this weeks guest is Kathrin Federer from Switzerland.  I had been following her for some time on Instagram and her work was so stunning, so got in touch.  Kathrin is actually a digital artist, so it was interesting to see and hear her talk about her approach to creating images.  It's not a full time engagement for her as she works in media, but never the less, a fabulous talent.  She works with companies and people like Adobe so keep a look out for her work.

In this one we discuss:

  • dealing with communication
  • storing ideas
  • anxiety & distractions
  • NFT's, blockchain + minting
  • graphic cards
  • creating youtube content
  • spy vs spy

17 Nov 2021Richard Chivers - Gas, glass and social housing00:55:57

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 161 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

As many of you know I love shooting architecture, there is something that draws me in. After following a few photographers I have tried encouraging them to come on the show. but it's tough in this field.  I see a lot of international artist so appreciate speaking about your work is not easy.  Well that changed and pleased to introduce Richard Chivers to you all.  Richard is from the UK and not only loves architecture, but shoots this genre professionally too.  What's also interesting is although he's a digital shooter, Richard loves 5x4 too, so a lot of his personal work was shot with his large format.

A talented man who works all over shooting some stunning buildings for architects.  This work has led him to personal projects too as part of some collectives too.  The projects like degeneration and off grid are all about the history of architecture in the UK and how its a changing landscape.  From the 1950's social housing to Victorian engineering and  modern sky scrapers, we cover it all!  Some of this work has been shot in cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southampton,Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham.

So in this one look out for:

  • controversy of glass
  • New York
  • vantage points
  • shooting 5x4
  • social housing
  • architects
  • tilt shift
  • gas holders

24 Jun 2020Interview with street & editorial photographer Michelle Groskopf01:15:09

How do you introduce someone who is funny, forthright and totally committed to her role in society.  With some people its more than a job, it's more than passion, it's simply who you are.  Today's guest is the one and only Michelle Groskopf, a street and editorial photographer from Los Angeles.

Michelle is an interesting figure in the community because her career moved rapidly from the world of the street to purses, people and some rather interesting clients.  After shooting for a certain favourite magazine of mine, Michelle was lucky enough to work with people in the tech industry.  Now when I say tech, I mean the big boss, as in Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey etc!   What is great is that Michelle took these photos in her style, not your standard corporate headshot.

Anyway, we discuss all sorts and have a great laugh, so here are a few points from it:

  • finding a mentor
    • how WIRED changed her life
    • vivid websites
    • voyeuristic style
    • telephoto lenses
    • COVID
    • sexism + racism
    • fighting equality

I have a certain Ibarionex Perello to thank for the recommend and boy, I'm so thankful.  Michelle is nothing but honest and talks a little about her upbringing and the fight of being a female gay photographer.

Quote

After listening back to the interview I think this quote from her provides a glimpse of what we discuss - "to be a black person know and to recognise that the whole world stands in way of your greatness”.

Random questions

Michelle doesn't escape the wrath of my questions, so find out Michelle's ideal headline and the relevance of skipping school.

30 Sep 2020Interview with legendary skate photographer - Grant Brittain01:35:40

Welcome to episode 103 of photography insights, the shot that interviews people from the photography industry.

It’s funny how I look back over the past hundred episodes and still cannot believe some of the names and talent I’ve managed to interview.  Each year of my photography seems like how do I beat last year.  Then all of sudden you get a reply from a legendary photographer and they say sure, let’s do it.  It’s times like this I’m still amazed that people that have so much experience are willing to spend some time talking to me.  It’s a very humbling experience I can tell you, and yes I still get nervous but this soon dissipates.  In fact, for those who come back regularly, I suspect you will notice this with guests.  After 15 minutes they might slow their speaking down and start laughing etc, but after 60 they are totally relaxed and like 2 friends are talking.  Well, that's what I try to do and hope its conveyed.  It’s an important skill when interviewing.  Anyway, where was I?

So yes because of COVID you are lucky enough to listen to the one and only skateboarding photography legend Grant Brittain!  It’s a true honor to have a man with many years of experience behind him.   For these sorts of interviews, I just couldn’t fit in my random questions, in fact, I had to edit this down just to get it where it is now.  So I know this is a long one, so feel free to skip forward.  But listening back to Grant was such a pleasure and we spoke over 3 hours in the end.  Let me tell you, this does not happen very often.  I try to edit what I believe you want to hear but can only do my best.

There is not much that needs saying about Grant, to be honest, just google his name, check Instagram, etc.  what was really nice, as he has a great reputation in the industry too as a kind person.  He did not disappoint too, as we talk from his roots in photography, through skating, the magazines, and working freelance now.  It’s a hell of a journey  and in the words of Grant " All wanted  to do was surf, skate & smoke pot"

So in this one, we cover:

  • going back to old shots
  • liking out of focus
  • shooting for layouts
  • embracing digital change
  • photographers eye collective
  • sleeping on pool tables + in darkrooms
  • getting out corporate feel
  • magazine industry
  • ethos of skaters
  • archives + COVID
  • cameras, cameras cameras
  • why grant doesn’t develop

02 Dec 2020Noah Berger - fires, protests & the news01:11:36

Episode 112 - Noah Berger

Noah has been described as “The California Photographer Who Has Shot More Than 100 Wildfires.”  He talks to us about his experience with taking photographs with fires.  Although he is a freelancer with corporate and news work, Noah talks about why he works with other photographers.  It’s a fascinating topic and gives you some idea about his preparations too.  He was kind enough to tell you about the photography kit too.

Although Noah has shot this sort of news work for a long time, he talks about how it's changing and why it's worrying him.  We do go through a couple of his images which I will add to the website because they were making me very emotional.  You may notice my tone change when we discuss them as I believe Noah captures the devastation of people, animals, and not just the landscape.  We also move on to his press work with protests too, which is quite worrying – especially getting shot!

In this one we discuss:

  • shooting in teams
  • police scanner tech
  • sleeping in cars
  • safety
  • planning trips
  • fire tornado
  • California press laws
  • postal deliveries
  • subject matter
  • staying unbiased
  • protest photography
  • getting shot
  • covid, lockdowns & curfew

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 152 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

It's funny how my previous guests can influence my decisions over future shows.  Kat Reichert was someone I became friends with, so when she recommend Lena Storjohann I reached out straight away.  Lena's work falls under the Lomography field, it's full of colour and alternative thinking.  We began talking as she attended the Experimental photography festival in Barcelona.  Well it turns out she took part and had a workshop on multiple exposure.  You can see how this type of work suits Lena, as she thinks differently about using film - wait till you hear about exposing both sides of the film (EBS).  Her fun continues by using 35mm film canisters for pinhole work!

So in this one we discuss:

- macro & contrast

- still life

- double exposure

- ebs

- solargraphy

- pin hole

-roundabouts

- peanut cans

- washi film

- film soups

09 Dec 2020A photographer's influence with David Collyer and Tobias Beach-Wyld00:51:22

Welcome to episode 113 everybody, hope you are coping well.  for those outside the UK, we have come out of the current lockdown. We are now in a tier system that allows different measures and freedoms.

To carry on our journey towards learning and education, I wanted to try and get a few people on together.  The idea was to talk about some artists and their influences on life and maybe their self too.  I’m lucky to have such a kaleidoscope of people I can call on – so this time we have David Collyer and Tobias Beach-Wlyd.  Both fabulous people and photographers in their own rights.

We have a discussion on a few artists, projects, and photos.  What I will do is put these all in the show notes for you, so you can visualise what we are talking about.  Everyone did their best to be descriptive as possible anyway so it will be interesting to hear if you follow on.  The artists covered in this podcast are Black Star, Don Mccullin, Philip Jones Griffiths, Kate Bellis and Nick Waplington.

I’m continually trying to improve my knowledge of the arts and sessions like this are really useful.  It’s always good to see a new project and find a new artist to follow.  This time of knowledge may help you in your own work in the future.

In this one we discuss:

  • Abergavenny bric-a-brac
  • David’s bargain print
  • magnum agency
  • landscapes
  • self documentary work
  • contact sheets
  • double stroke Leica
  • real life
  • middle-class tourists

24 Mar 2021Jonah Calinawan - academia, cyanotypes and dreams01:11:33

For episode 128 of photography insights we bring you another amazing artist, someone who has become a friend.

Jonah Calinawan made me feel very special like I am actually creating something useful for people.  He was an accountant for 25 years, decided to go to art school, become a cyanotype artist and now moving towards the world of acamedia through his PHD. Jonah uses his teachings to influence and learn about life and has a fondness for the thoughts of Jung.

Jonah’s work has multiple layers from the design to the implementation and presentation.  It’s a really interesting approach and the images are very thought provoking.  It’s like he’s always been meant to move in photography and learn about himself through his studies.

So in this one we are going to discuss:

  • focus on verbs
  • enjoy creating
  • repetition is the answer
  • writing artist statements
  • subtext of images
  • reactions to life
  • blogging
  • dream analysis
  • meaning of shapes

Quote

During the course of the show there were 2 quotes that stood out, but believe this one tells you about Jonah:

“symbiotic relationship thats happening between my writing and my imaging making.”

07 Apr 2021Eric Meow - pacman, podcasts & camping01:18:45

For episode 130 I'm talking to a guy I have followed for a while in the film community and long admired.  Originally noticed his analogue work and then started hearing him help out the team at Sunny 16 podcast.  One of the core reasons I became to admire the work was the openness about sharing details and any techniques but also his fun attitude.  Eric is full of laughter and smiles, throughout his interviews, whether a guest or host - its just his friendly personality.

It's been great talking to someone with passion for film and most formats too (so even 4x5).  We talk about his adventures travelling around and expired film and his many camera choices.  Eric talks about his start with podcasting too and he's put a great show together with Vania, thats very different.  It has segments of news, reviews, education on photographers, listener messages and even dev parties!  Honestly the relationship they have is great and I'm thoroughly enjoying listening.

So in this one:

  • podcasting
  • camping & cooking
  • keeping film cool
  • infra red
  • mountain bikes
  • very slow film
  • shooting f64

It's so nice to interview from the different areas of the photography world and this one is definitely that!  I remember Ethan launching the Kickstarter project for Cameradactyl back in 2018 and thought wow, how colourful is that, such a different approach.

Ethan has done a cracking job with the camera and launched all manner of accessories for cameras (not just his large-format model).  He has now ventured into making a handheld 4x5 which is a great concept.  Now I know not everyone is going to be thrilled about the products he makes or the choice of materials.  But this is 2019, there are not many options unless you have unlimited funds and some accessories he makes are only available second hand, as they relate to cameras from the 70+80's.

What's amazing about Ethan is that he has a business mind, an engineers mind and also a photographers eye, so it was quite easy to go between business and building in the same sentence.  In this one we discuss:

  • DIY at 10 years old
  • Home depot camera build challenge
  • Touring/selling in 50 states
  • Making 4x5/6x9 camera’s
  • Business decisions
  • Making custom ideas
  • Youtube + monetising
  • Scaling manufacturing
  • opensx70 project
  • Custom build/prints
  • Problems with home production
  • Building a mini-lab film processor

Random questions

Ethan easily answers our strange questions that involve:

- which mythical creature lives In Africa

- Eddie the Eagle!

- $1 million button

- Morning glory flowers

- Ideal presents for 90-year-old's

As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic.  We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening.

I am really pleased to present you with 2 lovely people from Germany today, it's Marwan and Chary's from Silvergrain Classics (aka Photoklassik).  Both are active on social media and always in touch with the community.  Chary's has posted some lovely footage including her son developing colour film in their home.  It's really nice to see this personal touch and see there are people behind the brand, not just some business.

If you haven't yet seen their magazine, I highly recommend it, they have some amazing artists featured.  In fact, I have written a review of the magazine and they inspired me to interview people like Jan Schlegel.

So listen to this show as we talk about:

  • large format enlargers
  • positivity
  • coming articles
  • kodak & tetenal changes
  • film industry relationships
  • cibachrome printer

28 Jul 2020Interview with award winning photographer Gulnara Samoilova01:23:13

Hey everybody, welcome to episode 94 of photography insights and today we are going to feature another great artist.  As I said in my previous episode I’m trying to reach out to a wider scope of people and this is another example – a photographer from Russia!

Gulnara comes from the region of Autonomous Republic of Bashkortostan and was the only female photographer.  She moved into the world of press photography under the belt of "associated press" in the USA.  She has won competitions and awards including world press photo.  Her work is known around the world now and one example is that of 9/11, where she was at ground zero.  In this podcast we do not discuss this as her interview with Bob at Street Photography Magazine covers all you need to know (plus its a great magazine).

I came across Gulnara because of her awards and her lovely work with street photography.  Gulnara is the founder of "womenstreetphotographers.com" too, where she showcases work of others. One of Gulnara’s projects caught my eye and listen out as we discuss hand painting.

Areas discussed

  • book collecting
  • shooting 40 years
  • importance of mentors
  • right critique & feedback
  • darkroom master
  • making chemicals
  • appreciating your homeland
  • being happy & proud of your work
  • workshops in Russia
  • lockdown + first book
  • teaching street
  • Instagram feeds & personality
  • artists residency + PAID trip to NYC

17 Feb 2021Linda Alterwitz - projects, breathing & technology01:11:35

Welcome back, this one is episode 123 and another lovely artist.  After speaking with Jeanine in episode 120 she was kind enough to recommend I look at Linda Alterwitz's work.  After looking over her work contacting it was clear she had a way with her art.  Linda describes herself as "working within the intersection of art, technology and science".   When you see her work you will see why too.

Linda talks about where the ideas for the projects come from - like watching a tv show or out with her husband.  She started life with a Master in Fine Art & Painting, but was already doing oil painting with her mother at about 5 years old.  Life has not always been easy though and talks about having a brain tuma in her 30’s.  How this actually influenced her use of medical technology for her work too.  This medical project started with using dog x-rays + layering with landscapes.  She then moved to human ones and collaborated with hospitals too.

Linda is very interested in the internal rhythms of our bodies too, whether its the heart, body or mind. She also finds coloration between rhythms in nature and humans.

Quote

During the show I couldn't help pick on a few words, but these ones stood out

“Landscapes are about comfort zones.”

In this one we discuss:

  • collaborating exhibition
  • left & right brain
  • thermal imaging
  • plastic cameras
  • technology changes
  • the next project

What I really like about John is his honesty, he tells you straight and makes mistakes, just like all of us.  He doesn’t mind saying when something goes wrong and explains why (he usually gets there in the end).

29 Sep 2021A catch up with Paul from Analogue Wonderland00:38:47

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 154 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

I have been shooting film for about 5 years now (or so I believe) and buying it initially online was always daunting. The world is very different now with so many places to buy from but that offer more than just a place to buy.  Luckily I came across Paul at Analogue Wonderland just over 3 years ago. It was clear he had a fresh approach to the industry and quickly established his business.  From his initial interview back in August 2018 I wanted to reach out again to try and summarise whats happened to Analogue Wonderland in the last 3 years.

Paul always seemed like one of us and felt like you were dealing with a friend and investing in something good. From the reviews side to the loyalty rewards, it just felt he had really nailed the film sector.  I'm always keen on following people that do good things and Paul is definitely one (as you will soon find out).

Because its late September 2021, the photography show has just finished too so we had time to talk about Hamish Gill and Paul's involvement in the Analogue spotlight segment.  I'm not hear to tell you where to buy your stuff from, thats not me.  I only tell you about businesses I like and the ones I use.  On a personal level I'm thank full to Paul for the introductions too, which has brought some fantastic guests like Lomig at Washi!

We've kept this episode short as it's a catch up.  So in this small episode we discuss:

- films stocks & covid

- colour 120 film

- cloning humans

- Pinsta camera

- analogue spotlight

- the film lab

- building a darkroom

- teams

- wonderbox

17 Jun 2020Mental health and the creative mind - a real story with Shaun Hall & Victoria Louise01:23:28

Welcome back all, a few weeks ago I brought you a double-length special with Stephen at Kosmo.  For this week I'm bringing you something really different and totally understand if it's not for you.  For one week, I've put together a double-length special focusing on mental health with a couple of photographers.  These are blunt, raw, true stories about real-life here as they talk about Mental Health and its effects.

I am very proud to present my friends Shaun Hall and Victoria Louise who have agreed to bring you honesty.  When around us there is the false world of perfection and Instagram, but behind this are people with problems.  It's about time we talked about this and stopped pretending we live these amazing lives and everything is a photo.

Shaun is more of a landscape and nature photographer, but loves all genres to be honest and is currently living off the Yorkshire Coast.  Victoria lives in the small town of Gainsborough with her family and works in the wedding and portrait world of photography.  They will both tell you about their lives, how mental health has affected it, what part photography has played.

In this one we discuss:

  • training your mind
  • traumas
  • addiction
  • suicide
  • treatment
  • recovery
  • funding
  • support mechanisms
  • coping under COVID

*** Please remember we are not medically trained and not offering professional advice, we are here as fellow humans with issues.  ***

23 Jun 2021Carol Golemboski - magic, raspberries and teaching01:12:48

Welcome to episode 140 of photography insights and I'm your host Andrew Walmsley.  This is the show that interviews people, artists, models and photographers from around the world.  Today we pop across to the west of America and talk with Carol Golemboski.

Carol teachers alternative processes at the University of Colorado in Denver.   Not only that but she is an artist in her own right with some interesting projects.  One of the projects is based on anthotypes and its another old process that uses the sun.  You will hear about her passion for the analogue world including the darkroom to produce her work.  Another piece of Carol's work we talk about is based around magic using processes like photograms.  We finish talking about an app she created to showcase her "psychometry" project on magic related anitques.

In this one we discuss:

  • energy & rewards teaching
  • teacher questions
  • boiling emulsions
  • remote teaching
  • lumen prints
  • re-using products
  • emulsions from organic materials
  • exposing fruit
  • photograms
  • photographing antiques

Blog

My latest article is now live on my website  and is called a darkroom session with Jay and Paul.  It's about teaching my friends this older way of printing your work using creative techniques.  We had a lot of fun and it was great to see both of them working away and create work they are proud of.

24 Feb 2021Elizabeth Stone - mortality, perceptions & art01:23:41

Welcome to episode 124 of photography insights.  This show i'm featuring another artist called Elizabeth Stone who has been recommended by both Jeanine Michna-Bales and Linda Alterwitz!  It's been really great recently to feature such different artists, who all have mutual respect for each others work.  Giving up their time to spend time with myself has been brilliant.

Elizabeth has been in to photography for decades too, so understands darkrooms, film and light.  She's an interesting character who has been through those hard elements of life.  Seeing loved ones leave this world is never easy and Elizabeth has managed to capture this time through her photography art.  You will listen to us talk about 2 different projects, one about her mother and her father too.  I would urge you to look at the photos on my website for clarity of what we are discussing.  I know from conversations its sometimes hard to understand through audio only, but trust me its a beautiful memory she has dedicated to this time.  It's also a humbling point for myself too, as you will hear and I did my best not to get upset.  Documenting the last 40 months of her mothers life going through Parkinson's disease, through the eyes of carer hit a nerve with people as we all experience elements of being mortal.

We also talk about her other projects too and how useful it is to keep your old negatives and work, as you will never know what you can do with them.  Elizabeth seems to find interesting ways to showcase everyday objects of photography, whether its the chemicals themselves or 35mm negatives.  Even her work about her own body is interesting, why she chose this and methods used to light it.

In this one we discuss:

  • telling a story
  • looking at yourself
  • examining your body
  • perception
  • abstractness from colour
  • Ecdysis + 35000 negatives!
  • no lines in art
  • heat guns, maths + memory
  • chemigrams

Quote

I've chosen a line from our conversation and its:

“we make art not really truly knowing what it’s about.”

Welcome to photography insights, the show that interviews people from the photography world. i'm your host Andrew Walmsley and today we feature a fun lovely surfing martian!  Yes it's Vania Zask a film photographer from Los Angeles and the other half of "all through a lens podcast".

As a regular listener of allthroughalens, it was great to feature Eric in episode 130 and he really recommended Vania.  So I did my usual research and listened to even more episodes and just couldn't wait to get her on here.  I think you will understand from her vibe and constant giggles, she really is a fun and interesting lady.

Vania's work is all about water, she's never far from it with her camera too.  She is known for her surfing shots and yes I mean shooting film on, in and under the water.  What is also fascinating is because of her love for old technology she approaches everything with a can do attitude.  Whether's its medium format, large format, cyanotypes or developing - she is a yes person.  In my opinion it's why there show is so interesting and fun, the on air friendship between Eric and Vania is fantastic.

Vania was the type of person you can relate to and just chat with.  So yes we spent hours chatting, but narrowed this down to 60 minutes for you all.  So in this one we are going to discuss:

  • female photographers
  • racial issues
  • Volvo's
  • Surfing (obviously)
  • Hanimex & Nikonos
  • Saving people
  • Dogs vs cats
  • Opening up online
  • Legendary fashion
  • Parking cars
  • compilation tapes

Random questions

It was pretty easy choosing questions for Vania, since you get to know a person through listening to them so much. So find out Vania's superpowers and her impulses.

Recently I got back out there in the world of portraiture with my mate Jay Good.  We shot a local model in her town and I've wrote about my experience of coming out covid.  We had fun, we had some pictures, Jay made sure I didn't fall in the water and I survived jumping down the bridge - anything for a shot!

25 Sep 2019Interview with press photography legend Paul Berriff01:27:33

Welcome to episode 59 of Photography insights, your one-stop guide to interviews with people in the photography industry.  Before we move on I wanted to thank you all for listening and supporting the show.  There are a couple of ways you can help further, which are, 1 - leave an iTunes review and to share the show with your friends. One of your friends will be interested, you can guarantee, there is a massive range of people interviewed so there is something for everyone’s interest.

Today we have a legendary film and video photographer from the UK called Paul Berriff. He’s been shooting over 50 years in the press world of photography and documentary film making.

Paul purchased his first camera from a newspaper round, he followed emergency vehicles on his pushbike in his teens!  He learned to test his film exposure by meeting bands like the Beatles, Rolling stones in their dressing rooms in the 1960’s

Paul has some great stories from just working in the press industry and then goes into the 4 near-death experiences.  I mean if you listen to them it's crazy and you might wonder how he’s still with us.  I think most people would have given up after experiences like this. One of these concerns 9/11 and you cant feel the magnitude of what Paul is saying, so please do check out his video on Youtube.

As usual, check out the show notes on the website for links to his amazing work.

  • Physical vs digital
  • Mamiya 6's
  • Making money
  • Advocates of film
  • Taking opportunities

24 Nov 2021Peter Kayafas - Discipline, New York + Totems01:07:38

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 162 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

Once again we head to the big apple for our next guest, someone from the world of film, the darkroom, education and travels.  It's a great pleasure to talk with someone whose work has been exhibited around San Francisco, New York and New Orleans.  Peter Kayafas teaches at the Pratt Institute in New York but is also the director of Eakins Press and involved in other photography related boards.  I wanted to talk with Peter as he travels around the US and manages to make prints and monographs of his work usually in the form of books.  I mean you can't beat a good photography book so do check out the links.

Peter has vast experience with teaching but also with shooting and darkroom too, so much he was in the darkroom with his dad around 2-3 years of age!  It was interesting to talk about his projects which are "the way west", "totems" which is about links to the past; "people in new york".  The people of New York stands out in the sense he even made 36" square prints on aluminium for this exhibition - imagine that!   The last one we discuss is "coney island waterdance" which he shot during the 1990's about the polar bear club.

So in this one listen out for:

  • broadening skills
  • default audiences
  • 80 days in a darkroom
  • printed medium
  • discipline
  • using instagram

11 Nov 2020Alejandro Ilukewitsch - travel & street photographer01:03:18

Interviewing my next guest was really easy, well that's how it felt.  Alejandro or “Alex” as he calls himself was born in Venezuela but has also lived in Mexico, Brazil, Germany, and now Romania.  Along these travels, he has fallen in love with street portraiture and has a great way of showing the culture.  As he says, there is no point going to the pretty and boring places in the city, as they are the same everywhere.  So he travels into the villages and neighborhoods, which has found him in some interesting situations.  Alex describes these to us and I think he’s underplaying how scary the situations were, especially the prison story!

Alex has used film in some of his works but is predominantly a digital shooter.  He has experience of shooting events like baptisms, weddings, and even concerts in his earlier life but loves his street work.  He’s a kind and good human who signed up for my secret project.  Alex was unfortunate as the camera was sent to Romania but didn’t make it to his office!

He has some lovely feedback from people so find out:

  • - shooting safely
  • - concert shooting
  • - street photography
  • - cultures
  • - shit happens
  • - prints for strangers
  • - film shooting
  • - Local celebrations
  • - shooting out of focus
  • - lusting after the Mamiya 7
  • - when NOT to shoot
  • - portraits

Shout out

I wanted to share with you some feedback from a couple of recent guests. Here is a recent Facebook one from Robert Dash

"Andrew is a thoughtful, friendly person with a great passion for all things photographic. He has the rare trait of wanting to seek out a wide range of artists, approaches, and techniques to help him broaden his understanding of the field, and to share that understanding with others. Andrew does his homework when he prepares for his podcasts. I enjoyed the container he set during our conversation, which allowed for stories and new ideas to emerge. Keep on blogging, Andrew--you're creating quite a valuable collection!"

I will share others in following weeks to, as it makes me feel very proud and humbled (and a few tears too).

14 Apr 2021Aline Smithson - Lenscratch, mothers & velour tracksuits01:11:38

As you know I've come across a lot of artists through the website Lenscratch.com and do urge you all to check it out.  Recently Karen Constine recommended I talk with the founder of the resource - Aline Smithson, so that's what I did.  After reaching Aline, was only to happy to chat.

Another lovely person who is all about giving, sharing information and providing a free resource for everyone. It's a hell of an effort to write regular and find time for your work too (i know this).  But after 14 years, Aline is still going strong and now has a team of writers alongside her.  What is unusual about this site is everything here is free and it was done this way on purpose and all the staff are volunteers too.  Very commendable they provide this for others.

Aline is a not only a talented photographer but her roots are in painting, so you will see some of this in her photography.  What I really liked was the different projects she has worked on and some of these are just so much fun.  It's not something I have seen a lot of so nice for a change. Though we will only get to talk about a few of these like "arrangement", "the lonesome doll" and "in case of rain" you really should delve in to her website to look at her portfolio.   Arrangement is about her mother and has been exhibited in Russia, Korea, China, France, Italy and the USA.

There are a few statements Aline made during the podcast and tells you about her thought process to photography.  The idea of lenscratch was to give back to community, but also she is a big believer in being patient.  In fact I took this quote:

"your work may not get celebrated now, but when your turn comes everyone will celebrate you”

Personally I really love this and we go on to explain why she talks about this. We also discuss:

  • only shooting film
  • board games
  • hard drive failure
  • Velour tracksuits
  • peer reviewing
  • how to get noticed
  • hand painting

28 Jul 2021Mark Tamer - glitching, manifesto's and migraines01:05:26

My name is Andrew Walmsley and welcome to photography insights.  This is the photography podcast that interviews people from the photography world.

Today we feature someone from my home country - UK.  Mark Tamer is a multi media artist from London, or I suppose you could also say experimental photographer too.  Whether it's digital cameras, scanners, chemicals, toy cameras Mark has tried it.  Looking over Mark's range of projects was fun, because there is a total variety.  The Multi portraits was something I noticed online and couldn't believe this idea.  Sure many of us have seen multi exposure, but not to this extent!    He came up with the idea with a friend after realising he didn't have many portraits.

We talk about his other projects like memory that fades that is all about editing hex code!  Moving across mediums he talks to us about his issues with migraines. This led him to the idea of shooting every day for his migraine diary and used the chemigram process!  Mark is another lover of the analogue world so we even discuss one of his film soup projects called breaking pictures.

He is a great guy and hope you enjoy this, here are the talking points for you:

  • layering images
  • moving to analog
  • gllitching
  • chemigrams & migraines
  • film soup
  • manifesto's
  • prescription drugs

We even manage to fit in my random questions so find out Mark's fashion tastes and why he would give a present to Mark Twain.

13 Jan 2021A photographer's influence with Pete Falkous and Stephen Rendall00:51:43

Welcome to another special edition of Photography insights.  We go back to our theme of how artists and photographers have influenced some of you.  For me there is no better time to discuss this, it's a fresh year, we all need distraction so let's listen to someone else.  By listening to other people you find new artists to look at and see how it inspired people.

This is the first time I had thought about mentioning someone myself, mainly because who wants to listen to me?  With not as much experience as most or photography education I wasn't sure about recommending anyone.  But there has been one person for some time that is influencing me on this photographic journey.  i don't mean just copying people either or just images, i mean a real thought pattern.  I've been lucky in life to be surrounded by a few amazing people and Quinn Jacobson just had this awe and effect on me.  Anyway I will stop babbling and move on to my guests.

So as you all know Pete from Static Age has a fondness for film, music and skateboarding.  He runs the static age zine label, shoots a lot of film and takes of the mundane everyday streets (which I love).  We naturally talk about a few of the characters that have importance in his life - like Glen E Freidman, Gregory Crewdson and Alec Soth (with a few more mentions too).  Whereas Stephen Rendall who loves fashion talks about the hero worship he has for David Bailey.  A few others like Sean Tucker and Lyndsay Adler are covered too.  Stephen is a lecturer in photography, a fabulous portrait photographer who considers the whole process of shooting, from inception to delivery.

There will be links on the websites and to some of the images we discuss too.

27 May 2020Interview with Stephen Dowling from Kosmo Foto01:29:22

After waiting so long I thought it would be wise to put an interview with Stephen Dowling from Kosmo foto together.  After writing for his blog last year (link) and watching his website grow from the Zorki days has been impressive.  Obviously some of you know Stephen from his film, some know him from the BBC and some from his NME days, never mind his travels around the world.

After meeting Stephen back in March 2019 at the photography show (with the rest of the crew too) it was clear he's got bags of experience and intelligence too.  I love talking to people like Stephen about the many years he has been a journalist, but mainly his passion for the analogue world of cameras.

I decided to make this an extra-length special to cover 2 weeks, as I'm still unsure if I can commit to a weekly podcast anymore (it takes up time editing etc).   Obviously I will never be short of interesting people to find, it's just finding mutual times to fit this in.

So, let's break the interview down since its an extra-length special. We talk about some of the characters out there like Jeremy (Japan Camera Hunter), Hamish Gill from 35mmc, EM from Emulsive, Steve at Chroma, Sam at Solarcan and Paul from Analogue Wonderland.    Obviously Stephen knows many people, but he's not name dropping, far from it, he's actively complimenting and talking about people who are making the film community a better place for all.

So in this one we discuss:

  • working from home
  • spiders & red rooms
  • important BBC story from last year
  • photo walks
  • Selling during Covid
  • Blogging since 2012
  • Shooting cats
  • 1st time developing film
  • street portraiture
  • Belarus film collective
  • Zorki & Fed cameras
  • David Collyer + Guardian

12 May 2021Dima Gavrysh - Afghanistan, decisions & questions01:17:53

Welcome to photography insights, the show that interviews people from the photography world.  I’m your host Andrew Walmsley and today we have an intellectual and thought provoking photographer for you.  Dima Gavrysh started life in Ukraine and is now living and working in the USA (near Silicon Valley).

A man who has master degrees in cinematography from Kyiv and photography from Rhode Island (RiSD)! He’s a well travelled man who has worked as a freelance photojournalist for the Associated Press.  I first came across Dima’s work through lenscratch because of his work in Afghanistan.

He tells us about important moments in his career like during 9/11 he was scanning in a news room and seeing what happened made him move to New York.  Dima ended up with an internship at the Washington Post as a prize for a Eddie Adams workshop.  After time he realised this had no meaning and saw the never ending war of Afghanistan in the news. That was the catalyst and volunteered to go over.  Dima talks about getting to know soldiers and the experience of them not coming back again.  The realities of war are boredom, anticipation and fear.  His take from his time was he found out lots of things about himself and had more questions that answers!

From his work in Afghanistan he's created a book from his project called "Inshallah" - which means "god willing".

In this one we are going to discuss:

  • technology is not important
  • destined to be doctor
  • what education did for him
  • introductions were key
  • restrictions of shooting
  • short form vs long form news
  • Prince Charles & President Obama
  • meeting Afghan elders
  • press and the military
  • being macho
  • the tech industry
  • iPhone shooting
  • reading

03 Mar 2021Eric Kunsman – Dr Pepper, payphones + Rochester01:29:13

Welcome back everybody, we are now on episode 125 so really happy to bringing you another amazing guest for this weeks show.  Eric Kunsman is an educator (Rochester Institute), artist and damn nice guy who was recommended by Elizabeth Stone.    I'm so so pleased recently with the list of fascinating and kind people that have been recommended recently.  Eric is from the Rochester area of New York  and although was famous for Kodak in the past, it's not the same picture anymore.  Rochester has some other history for us too, as we have already interviewed the one and only Clay McBride from the university and a former student - Nick Brandreth!

Anyway Eric started his own Booksmart studio back in 2005 and made colour printing profiles for a number of well known international companies.  His studio allows him to not allow process film, but he has a fully functional darkroom, Aladdin's arcade of Kodak memobirilia and you can even try gum, carbon or platinum printing!  Eric talks about teaching students fundamentals of colour profiling. This is designed to give people a grounding on and learn from. Having this allows Eric to help people understand what paper works well for their requirements.  He’s so experienced he could smell and taste the difference in paper stocks.

Projects including payphones helped him learn more about the impoverished area of Rochester. He chose to setup his studio here for the low costs, but there is a lot of families on low incomes. This project has now turned in to looking at where payphones are located compared to crime/race/economics!

Los Alamos was another portrait project of his was shot in 20 minutes about firefighters. He shot these with 4x5 cameras but wanted to be respectful and provide them with something so used Polaroid.

“Thou art will give” is another one of Eric’s projects we touch on through the podcast. It’s all about penitentiary's and giving people a chance to have penance to god.  Eric describes how this places were built and why there is such an importance on light, placement and design for religious reasons.  Because he had worked on book binding before he noticed logs books from the 1820-1830s and was hooked.

Fake news was another project that started and all started because of his children debating in school.  Eric then realised he needed to record this and archive for the future. 35000 screenshots + 15 volumes

In this one we talk about:

teaching

  • large format digital printing
  • finding your way
  • experience with gear
  • colour management system
  • colours casts
  • smelling paper
  • Nuclear reactors
  • developing fast
  • demise of Kodak/Xerox
  • lifelines & payphones

Kathleen has been featured in press and media all over now (link here) and she's using this to educate others it's time for change.  Please do look at her Facebook page, which is now the core place for everything related to her work.  She is doing her best to help others in a respectful way.

04 Nov 2020Frames magazine - interview with photographer and editor Tomasz01:13:39

Although I really enjoyed my small break in the hills of England with my family it's time to get back to podcasting.  This was an unusual one for me, as it was first thing in the morning but it was really nice to speak with my guest.  Tomasz is a talented classical pianist, photographer, and editor of Frames magazine!  It’s unfair how talented people like Tomasz are, the way they can work across music and photography.  This can be seen in his personal work where he shoots concerts, musicians, and portraits.

Tomasz has editorial and podcasting experience too, as he has run Fujifilm online magazine for 5? years too.  Recently he has been working hard behind the scenes to raise awareness about his latest project – FRAMES MAGAZINE.  This idea was a beautiful printed magazine that should “wow” people.  So he’s been creating a fabulous group on Facebook, there are a youtube channel and newsletters.  It’s just getting printed in the UK now so definitely work checking it out.

One difference about the magazine is Frames is based on a monthly subscription service with online content.  For more information check the link in the show notes or my website.

In this one we talk about:

- covid & printed

- mobile photography

- traditional photography

- frames Facebook group

- inspiration from different genres

- positives of lockdown

- photography bucket lists

- finding your film

- scanning film

- the printed medium

- the personal connection

- importance of sleep

22 Sep 2021Lindsay Adler - colour, lighting and technology01:16:36

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 153 of photography insights.  This is the show that interviews people from the photography world.

My friend Stephen Rendall had talked about a famous fashion photographer during a previous podcast (link here).  After going through some of this persons work I was actually enthralled by it and just had to get in contact with them.  Now this was not easy to pull off, she is a very busy lady and it's took some months but I'm pleased to say we have Lindsay Adler.  Lindsay is amazing photographer, who is at the top of her game in the fashion industry (she has over 388k followers just on Instagram!).  Her work is on magazine covers, editorials and adverts across places like Marie Claire, Elle Magazine etc. Lindsay teaches through her links with Adorama, Canon and places like Creative Live too.  She also has 5 books out there too and also started her own learning platform. I truly believe you will become hooked on her work once you check it out.

What I really liked about Lindsay is not just the hard work and countless hours she puts in, but she cares about her team around her.  She talks to us about this especially during times like this pandemic.  Lindsay is very honest and doesn't mind sharing tips with us all, so in this one we discuss:

  • mood boards + stories
  • researching artists/stylists,make up
  • wedding photography
  • purpose + colour
  • holding attention
  • wet plate
  • technology changes
  • best modifiers
  • importance of lighting
  • lasers

Listen out for her answers to my random questions too.

Thanks to Paul Ottley for kind words recently on social media.  A great guy who started his photography journey in the last few years and I helped teach a little about lighting.

As you heard last week about my latest article on that old WW2 hospital. I've had some lovely feedback from the lady who run the tours and have something to offer a few of you. Mary can actually arrange some small group tours for photographers that include a 7 hour visit - so plenty of time to shoot!  It's in a small group of 4 and if anyone is interested please get in touch.

So after discussing this last week I have finally implemented a way for anyone to donate.  This will help with ongoing improvements and hosting costs for the website.  I don't allow adverts on my website unlike most other people - i believe it detracts and distracts from the content. 04 Aug 2021Diana Nygren - climate, relatives & urban living01:01:27

My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 146 of photography insights.  This is the photography podcast that interviews people from the photography world.

In this week's show we feature Diana Nygren, artist from Boston, USA. I was lucky enough to come across Diana through Debe Arlook who was exhibiting at the Griffin Musuem too!  In the words of Diana "her work explores the way people relate to their physical environment, be it urban, rural, or natural."  This it totally evident through her different projects that show these themes.  For instance we have a discussion on the urban scheme for her "when the trees are gone".  Honestly please check it out, its a great take on the future of our world.

We also go through her covid project "just another alice" all about very small photography.  Moving through her work we look at "the persistence of family"  and "beyond this place there be dragons".  We have a lovely time going through life, family and travel together with our thoughts on the environment too.

So in this one we discuss:

  • Griffin musuem
  • presenting your work
  • realities of art
  • portfolio reviews
  • composite images
  • covid projects
  • relatives
  • glaciers
