In case you missed it and thousands of you most certainly did, here is a replay of the awesome breadth of knowledge that Clarence shared with my YouTube audience! This winter we all have been challenged to capture a Winter Milky Way Panorama and one of the most critical steps to a successful one is using an Astro-modded camera. Thanks to Clarence's business SpencersCamera.com we all have an affordable way to get that camera to use this winter! In between questions from the audience, Clarence also showed us how he edits his astro-modded images to give you a head-start once you capture your own astro-modded Milky Way image! 05 Dec 2022Jeroen Linnenkamp from the Netherlands joins me to talk Star Color & Europe Milky Way | Episode 17500:55:28
This week on the podcast I am joined by my first guest in a very long time, Jeroen Linnenkamp! Jeroen and I were talking about star color and he had the question about whether shutter could ruin star color the way that high ISO will blow out star color. I wasn't sure if there was a threshold when the exposure would start clipping the star color by shutter alone and so Jeroen did an experiment and shared the results with me for Milky Way Wednesday and today he talks about what those results mean to him. Along with that Jeroen shares adventures of Milky Way Photography from the Netherlands and a story about a beast that could have killed him while out enjoying fields of heather. Whether you are in the southwest of the United States or the low lands of Holland, Astrophotographers are always risking life and limb for the shot! Say thanks to Jeroen for joining the podcast by subscribing to his YouTube channel and following his instagram! Links below! 03 Feb 2017Royce's professional background & transition to Digital | Bonus from Ep 1800:25:41
Extra Podcast episode where we share the 25 mins we spent talking about Royce's fascinating film and photography background. If you like the idea of getting into the weeds on aspects of how film for movies was edited, color corrected and hear about it from the perspective of a photographer who greatly enjoyed the transition from Film to Digital. Then you will enjoy this bonus excerpt about Royce Bair's professional background. Regular Podcast episode returns on Monday the 6th. NOTE: During the podcast Royce mentioned some early digital to analog film output and couldn't remember the names of the machines. They were the Solitaire and the Kodak LVT. The Solitaires were used to output digitally retouched files to 35mm slides or negatives. The cost up to $60,000 each. The cine models were used to output special computer effects for some of the Star Wars movies and other special effect movies (often done by Lucas' "Industrial Light and Magic" division). They often had up to a dozen of these film recorders going day and night to output the film for the movies (because it takes 24 frames for just one second of on screen time); http://www.promarketinc.com/pdf/mgisolitairecineiiiflx.pdf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_recorder For larger color transparencies or color negatives, used for large printing (4x5 and 8x10), the Kodak LVT was the better film recorder technology. They cost about $170,000. https://artofplatinum.wordpress.com/2014/03/18/light-valve-technology-lvt-platinum-printing/ Back in the mid 90’s Replicolor.com, here in SLC, had 3 Solitaires and one LVT.

23 May 2017Mark Gee | Astrophotography Planning with Australian Photographer | Ep 3400:46:34
We hangout with world renowned Australian Photographer Mark Gee and talk about the incredible patience and planning it took for him to capture his famous video of the full moon rising on top of silhouettes of people enjoying the view at a lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. If you haven't watched the video yet, go to the link below and watch it right now! Everything was so well planned out and perfected over months of trial and error. It is awe-inspiring! We also go over the scary and the hilarious of getting out with your camera at night and absorb all the wisdom and info Mark is willing to impart for how he deals with noisy foregrounds, captures timelapses and when is best to travel to New Zealand for the best view of the core of the Milky Way. We talk about the challenges of the trip, the failures, our sunrise at Monument Valley along with news of our Listener Survey and PhotoPills contest. 11 Jun 2017Milky Way Photography out in Escalante National Monument | Ep 3601:05:50
We spend Memorial Day Weekend out at the Grand Staircase - Escalante area and experience crazy dust, beautiful clear night skies, terribly annoying washboard dirt roads, actually visible but partial Aurora and get lost walking in a straight path. All with our buddy and guide Jeff Pedersen. Astrophotography is usually a challenge, but out at Escalante there are photogenic setting on top of photogenic setting making the only difficulty waiting until the next nightfall so you can start capturing images again. What a beautiful place for Milky Way Photography. Sorry for the delay, the audio quality and the shortened Gear Time. We intended gear time to talk up the contest that would have been ending two days after the podcast was released but audio quality delays and flooding at Aaron's house delayed the podcast edit. Rafael also explains to us how to use the Search tool from the bottom bar of the planner, what the column of blue bars are next to the circled Milky Way image on the Planner, how to best plan for Golden Hour light, how to be certain you won't be in the shadow of terrain and many other tips. To celebrate hitting 50 podcast episodes we hang out with our Admins from the Facebook Listeners Group Daniel Lindhardt, Darrell Harrington, Rob Ryan and Dean Vinson. These guys have become our best friends on the Facebook Group as they have been a part of the Photog Adventures team since December last year! Their hard work on keeping the Facebook group from sucking and being really fun guys to work with deserved some recognition so Brendon and I spend an hour hearing about their beginnings in photography, their scariest adventure this past year, where they love to go close to home for photography and the one thing they have learned this year that they want to pass along. If you don't mind a bunch of dudes ribbing each other, laughing loudly and hanging out giggling like a bunch of 14-year-old girls you will enjoy this podcast. Special thanks to our other two Facebook Admins who unfortunately couldn't make it this episode: Brent Huntley and Josh Moore.

In short, we saw ALL of North Carolina with Jordan and Roger Younce from the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to the beaches south of Wilmington and had a blast out there! We share the successes and failures of our photog adventure up Dry Canyon. Hiking almost two hours to get to this amazing view from a rocky outcropping on the side of this Rocky Mountain foothill is such an amazing setting for some fall colors and Landscape Photography. Looking forward to enjoying the peace and quiet of cold October temperatures out at the Sand Dunes but instead we find that there are hordes of people out there! We talk about the challenges of lighting the dunes with only one light, staying safe amidst all those Can-Am and ATVs flying all over the place and difficulty with composition over light polluted spots and the 1-hour visible only Milky Way Core. THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION JUST INFO: http://amzn.to/2kn0ocg We have optimism this light will work great but until we give it some real tests we can't recommend it.

30 Dec 2017Oregon 2017 Part Two: Bandon, Shore Acres & Heceta Head Lighthouse at Night | Ep 6301:34:00
Second Part of our Oregon Coast 2017 Listener Adventure and this time we are in Bandon, Shore Acres State Park and at the Heceta Head Lighthouse! This trip had been fantastic but a day of rain moved us from the Brookings area up to Bandon with hope that the skies would clear by sunrise the next day and boy did the skies change! We talk about our working hard to take advantage of the gap in the cloudy skies at Bandon and later on Shore Acres on our way up to Heceta Head Lighthouse. We ended up barely catching a short-lived mostly clouded out sunset from the road at an overlook across the bay from Heceta Head Lighthouse and then hike up to the lighthouse to capture it at night while the lights are shining. It was a stunning adventure from Bandon to Heceta Head and was made even that much better with another day of hanging out with Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho! 07 Jan 2018Finishing our Oregon Coast trip talking Thor's Well, Cape Kiwanda & Cannon Beach | Ep 6402:29:39
In this CRAZY EXTRA LONG EPISODE we cover our adventures from Sunrise out at famous Thor’s Well, awesome but frustrating sunset at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, great sunrise at Yaquina Bay Bridge, an AMAZING and highlight of the trip Sunset out at Cape Kiwanda and then an equally amazing sunrise out at Cannon Beach to finish out our trip along the Oregon Coast in November. We are joined by listeners John Henry Maurice and Kyle Kephart throughout this podcast and at times it happens suddenly. Despite my best efforts editing them in, some transitions will be sudden. Apologize for that and the length of this podcast but there is just too much good stuff to get stingy in episode 64! 1 hour and 26 mins into this podcast listen as Brendon finally reveals that he has possibly FOUND his lost memory card that carried thousands of images from his entire first half of the Oregon Coast trip! Again thank you to all of you who joined Brendon and I on this Listener Adventure to the Oregon Coast! We really had a blast out there with listeners Drew Armstrong, Kirk Keyes, John Henry Maurice, Kyle Kephart and new friends Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho. Some of these can be obvious and are things we all know, but until you are out there enough and recognize when you are NOT doing them DESPITE KNOWING them or when you realize you are doing them just a little wrong it can make a big difference to your photography. After a year of going out to over 65 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS for photography in 2017 Brendon and I have learned a LOT about where our strengths and weaknesses lie. Thanks for being a part of this adventure in 2017 and we can't wait to report that we are practicing what we are preaching in this podcast!

Enjoy this Christmas Morning episode talking about our Goals for 2018 and recapping some of the "bests" we had in 2017. We begin the podcast talking about Jordan Younce's new adventure and the end of a chapter in his life. Then we go over his awesome recommendation on Picture Books, the best challenges, moments and images from 2017 and what we plan on doing in our Photography business goals for 2018! Sorry for the delay on this podcast causing all the Christmas Morning talk to be three Mondays too late, but a couple weeks of illness and crazy difficult time-sucking edits on the Oregon podcasts made it impossible to get this one out. James talks about his connection to the Faroe Islands, his years of experience there, the weather, culture, awesome potential for Landscape Photography and the blast we are going to have from Sept. 10th through 17th out there! We have created this workshop for you to experience photographing some of the most breathtaking scenery on offer with steep sided mountains that rise out of the sea to almost 1000 meters making them the tallest cliffs in Europe, small fishing villages with grass covered roofs, huge cascading waterfalls that flow strong after the smallest rainfall, deep like fjords and black sand beaches with tidal pools scattered all around. Each location we visit will offer a new adventure and we will even make the drive into the heart of the mountains of Vestmanna, Spáafelli on Suðuroy and to the summit of Sornfelli that stands almost 2500 feet above. The Islands are a true source of inspiration to anyone who visits. With the constant changing weather making every photograph unique.

Andrew Marr is one of the top Landscape Photographers from Australia and we had a chance to hang out with him and talk the unique challenges of Perth, Australia area and the one thing you wouldn't expect from a coastal city like Perth. No clouds! Often, he can't even go out in the summer because there just are zero clouds in the sky let alone a quality and dynamic sky! We go over some of his favorite nearby locations in Perth, one of the crazy cool places he goes in his winters that is 17 hours away from him and we get a chance to hear about the behind the scenes of his trip to the UK where he hung out with Adam Karnacz of First Man Photography and a BONUS trip to Iceland! 08 Feb 2018Five days of Sunrises & Sunsets over Arches, Canyonlands, Deadhorse Point & False Kiva | Ep 6801:33:26
To start on 2018 really well, we joined Jeff Pedersen, Tim McGowen, Drew Armstrong & Kirk Keyes out in Moab to enjoy never sleeping and lots of Photography! We just missed Ed Shanahan out here, it was really too bad we missed him on this trip but he got an AMAZING sunrise at Mesa Arch that Monday. Jeff and Tim bragged about it allll week long as we never had that amazing of a sunrise at any location but some really great sunsets where the sky just blew up with pink afterglow! We capture the Windows area in Arches National Park both for Landscape Photography and Milky Way Photography as well as Star Trails at Balanced Rock one night. Then Mesa Arch, Deadhorse Point and the Gossips for sunrises. Other than being crazy sick with Bronchitis, it was an amazing trip! See images and videos in the show notes at PhotogAdventures.com/ep68
14 Feb 2018Inspired & Tired our 13-mile hike to look for our lost Inspire 1 Drone at the Wedge Overlook | Ep 6900:56:19
Going out on a Saturday to the mini-Grand Canyon of Utah - the Wedge Overlook - for some fun location scouting and filming with the drone should be an easy going uneventful day. Well our trip with Daniel Lindhardt a couple Saturdays ago reminded us why some of you think of Photog Adventures as a Laurel and Hardy act or enjoy it because we are a couple of boneheaded photographers having a blast and you just enjoy our comedy of errors! This Photog MISAdventure starts out with some fun driving through Buckhorn Wash enjoying the Petroglyphs and Pictographs of the Archaic and Fremont Indians in the Barrier Canyon Style panel. But soon it turns into the panicked realization that we just flew our drone out beyond our reach, well at least not without a long hike! Come listen to how that 13-mile hike went and how the search turns out! We talk about the challenges of really near foreground subjects in Milky Way Photography and remembering to focus stack! Show notes coming to PhotogAdventures.com/ep70 soon! But I wanted to get this podcast out ASAP so I will have to beg your patience as I add it later today! Check out our upcoming Workshops here: http://photogadventures.com/adventures/
08 Mar 2018Milky Way at Joshua Tree & Wildlife Photography on the Channel Islands at Santa Cruz Island | Ep 7101:16:09
In this episode we recap our first adventure out to Joshua Tree National Park and capturing a Milky Way Panorama over The Eye or Cyclops Rock and the amazing Joshua Trees on our way out to the LA area. With changes to our plans of getting out to the Yosemite Firefall we found ourselves in the area with lots of extra time so we booked a Day Trip out to Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands! We get to see pygmy Island Foxes and beautiful birds as they fly around the cliff faces of the Island coastline and enjoy a day out in a location we had no expectations of getting to see this soon! We talk about the challenges of getting your Milky Way low-level lighting right in a location you don't know especially when you get there in the dark and have to work fast with a quickly approaching Milky Way. Then we cover the experience out at the Channel Islands and how to best go about a day trip to Santa Cruz and make the most of your time there. We had a great time on this trip and saw a lot of different landscapes, people, wildlife and enjoyed the adventure with minimal hiccups. In the end of the podcast we talk about an amazing occurrence as we return to the mainland leaving the Channel Islands further and further behind we get to live through one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had in our lives!

02 Apr 2018Last minute all-nighter to Royce Bair Milky Way Butte for our March Milky Way | Ep 7300:56:01
Needing a March Milky Way and some good stories for the podcast, we drive all-night to the Butte in Hanksville, Utah that Royce Bair told us about. This shot is best during an early season Milky Way so we made the sacrifice of getting out there Sunday night through Monday morning to try our luck at getting an awesome Milky Way Image like Royce Bair did last year. In classic fashion, the only clouds in the 10% cloudy sky were hanging low on the horizon South East of us and covered our Milky Way core for most of the morning and then traveled towards us making a window of opportunity crazy slim. Being forgetful these days, Aaron left his shoes and some REALLY important gear that may have ruined the morning more than the clouds did. 11 Apr 2018Photog Adventures is on a Ukrainian Travel TV Show featuring Utah and Milky Way Photography | Ep 7401:10:15
To our surprise, we get contacted at the end of last week by a Travel TV Show out of Ukraine! This show is called “Heads and Tails” or in Ukrainian “Орел и Решка” is the number one travel show in Eastern Europe: Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and 11 other countries! Heads and Tails features new travel destinations to their audience and show the most interesting things to do and places to visit. All with a pretty cool premise of flipping a coin at the beginning of each adventure and the winner of the coin toss gets an unlimited budget to do things with while the other only gets around $100! They also have a YouTube channel which has 1.3m subscribers. Which is awesome of course, but their TV Show gets 60 Million viewers! Amazed and honored, their producers of the show found Photog Adventures and decided we were the right guys to work with to help one of their Hosts get a Milky Way Timelapse in the world-famous dark skies of Utah! We take Anton and his small filming crew out to Goblin Valley Sunday night for an amazingly clear and beautiful night! In this Podcast we talk about the fun of being on a Travel TV Show, the interesting challenges of having a producer manage the narrative and create scenes and orchestrate everything from when we hand an extra pair of gloves to Anton to when we walk down the hill to our location for Milky Way Photography. Check out the “Орел и Решка” YouTube channel here to see the show we are talking about: https://goo.gl/szb9Sn Join me April 21st and learn from the Star Tracking Milky Way Master, Eric Benedetti here: https://goo.gl/v5KPHq Join Photog Adventures at a Milky Way Workshop this year! 02 May 2018Royce Bair | Single Image Milky Way Photography vs. Star Tracking Milky Way Photography | Ep 7601:06:37
Has Star Tracking made Single Image Milky Way Photography just a waste of time? The answer is NO! With Royce Bair in studio we get some pros and cons of both types of Milky Way Photography and hear from the Master Milky Way Photographer how to best take advantage of our time out there under the stars and get the most out of our images whether or not you do any star tracking. Royce shares with us some post-processing techniques he likes to use to reduce the noise in his single image photography using Nik Collections DFine tool as well as going for the small effort of a mini stack to reduce noise. Royce continues on to talk about his use of a astro-modded camera and the benefits that come from that as well as his rule of thumb he likes to follow for what makes an image an Single Image, Stacked, Blend or Composite. Along with that he gives his thoughts on the ethics of divulging whether someone used a composite to get an image they have shared or sold as a print. 10 May 2018We discuss Rusty Parkhurst's article 9 Tips to take your Landscape Photography to next level | Ep 7700:47:50
We go LIVE on Facebook for Podcast 77 and have a discussion about Rusty Parkhurst's recent article on https://improvephotography.com/ "9 Tips to take your landscape photography to the next level". In our Landscape Photography, we all get there where we are enjoying our progress and have put in our practice of getting our f-stop right, bracketing like champs exposing for the highlights, composing great images, staying and waiting for good light and going the extra mile in our post-processing but then we hit a plateau. What can you do to get off that plateau and turn your landscape photography up to 11? During the discussion we actually are lucky to have had the delays with the tech when trying to go live for an hour and a half! Because Rusty Parkhurst was able to join us and we got instant feedback and comments from the great guy while going through his article! Listeners and Rusty chime in all the way through this podcast and it was a lot of fun for everyone involved! This is definitely something we would like to do more of in the future! 23 May 2018Jeff Pedersen talks Landscape Photography at White Pockets & why you should NOT go there | Ep 7901:12:32
White Pockets is a unique area of windswept sandstone near Kanab, UT. The sandstone there is not the typical red rock found in most of the Colorado Plateau – it’s not only white, but also yellow, orange, and even purple in places. And there’s Brainrock! It’s an amazingly interesting place for photographers. Jeff finds White Pocket to be more interesting than even another near-by location, The Wave. And White Pocket has many more locations to shoot than The Wave. The roads that access White Pocket consists of deep sand and patches of sharp rock. Four-wheel drive and high clearance are required. Don’t try this road unless you have experience driving under these conditions AND a vehicle that meets these requirements. Don’t try it with a car or even a RAV4-type vehicle. Don’t take a rental vehicle as you will violate your rental agreement. If you get stuck, towing fees will run about $1000 - $2000! THIS IS A DEMANDING ROAD! Jeff recommends not going alone – bring a buddy or two. Go with someone that knows the road or better yet, an authorized guide. It’s at least 2.5 hours for help to get there if you are stuck or have a medical emergency. Aaron got composition paralysis upon arrival, so he took a few shots with his phone, and then found some locations that the got super excited about. Using the wide-angle distortion of his Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 , Aaron used the leading lines of the wind-blown sandstone to frame up a shot. But the clouds were changing fast as sunset approached… Jeff and Aaron are looking forward to bringing Brendon out there someday – it’s going to be like watching a seven-year old opening presents at Christmas time! If you enjoy this podcast – please leave a review at iTunes, Stitcher, or your favorite source for podcasts. Update from Episode 78 – We talked in about using the Metabones Speed Booster adaptors for Sony – they are for APS-C cameras, and not full frame. The speed boosting feature is not fully compatible with Sony Full Frame cameras – they are supposed to switch the Sony FF cameras into “APS-C Size Capture”. They should work fine with Sony APS-C cameras. Aaron found his Tamron was giving him color fringing on the edges of the frame. He finds this lens works great for Astro, but he wasn’t happy with some of the photos he took with it at White Pocket. Jeff suggested letting the camera convert the image from RAW to JPG by saving them as RAW+JPG when shooting. The camera conversion process Jeff says, in some cases, can make a JPG that sometimes looks better than the RAW, even when humans do the JPG processing. Jeff recommends bringing Sunpie Emergency Traction Mats They can be used to help your vehicle to get out of mud, sand, or snow. They cost about $70 for a pair on Amazon. For a sandy place like White Pocket, two pair of these might be best. Jeff’s final recommendation - If you go to White Pocket for Milky Way shooting, use lots of light when walking around. It’s easy to turn an ankle there so make sure you can see where you’re walking.
