MICHKOVMANIA!

Matvei Michkov, for the 3rd time as a teenager, scored the overtime winner for the Flyers to cap off a game that went from boring to dramatic very quickly.

Michkov set up Owen Tippett to open the scoring and that’s all we saw until a busy 3rd period, as the standouts in the game were goaltenders Jordan Binnington and Aleksei Kolosov. That is, until OT.

Charlie & Bill break down the win and the tremendous play of the Russian Rookies.

Despite a slow start that saw David Pastrnak blow by Shayne Gostisbehere and deflect his first goal of the game off of Ivan Provorov in the game's first 12 seconds, the Philadelphia Flyers actually played one of their best games of the season on Wednesday night against the Boston Bruins.
That is, of course, until a comedy of errors, namely stupid penalties, began in late in the third period.
Protecting a 3-1 lead, Nicholas Aube-Kubel lead off the calamity by closing his hand around the puck when he caught a pop-fly in the neutral zone. Pasta scored his second of the night 10 seconds after the call to put Boston within one.
Then, with two minutes left, Kevin Hayes got called for a lazy hook, which allowed No. 88 to convery his hat trick with only 14 seconds left in regulation.
Finally, in the game's final 7 seconds, Scott Laughton committed a dumb interference which gave the Bruins a power play to begin overtime, a 4-on-3 advantage they used to win the game 30 seconds into the extra frame.

It’s over! The 2023-24 NHL season, which began on October 10th, is now officially over after the Florida Panthers were crowned Stanley Cup Champions, prevailing in game 7 of the Final on Monday night.

And now, with the season behind us, it’s officially Matvei Michkov season!

The Philadelphia Flyers kept their winning ways intact on Saturday night as they took care of the New York Islanders 4-3 thanks to Kevin Hayes’ overtime tally to make it four straight victories. Joel Farabee produced his second hat trick in the win as he lasered a few dishes from James van Riemsdyk (three assists) past Ilya Sorokin to hand the Orange and Black their fourth win in their last five meetings with New York.
The Flyers’ forecheck was effective in the first 40 minutes as two of Farabee’s markers came off plays JVR made to gain possession of the puck in the offensive zone before the second-year forward benefitted with goals. It looked as though it was going to be the Flyers’ night until the third period, when the club allowed two preventable goals before finding themselves needing extra time resulting in Hollywood Hayes’ knockout punch.
Along with the usual concerns surrounding this team involving defense and toughness, we also delved into if we should be concerned about the power play, the penalty kill looking better, new options on the blue line, Nolan Patrick, and interference away from the puck.

Tyson Foerster broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period with his 15th goal of the season, and followed it up with a goal off a penalty shot 45 seconds later to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead as the middle frame came to a close.

Philadelphia outshot Ottawa 19-4 in the first period, but came up short on 3 power play opportunities leaving the door opened for the Senators to get back in it, which they did with an early Vladimir Tarasenko goal in the second. The Flyers finally closed out the Senators, who won the first 2 games of the season series by a total score of 10-5.

The Philadelphia Flyers losing streak has reached 8 following an ass-kicking at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens. Trailing 1-0 after the first and not looking too bad in the process, Philly surrendered 5 goals in the second period, including the final 2/3 of Juraj Slafkovsky’s first career hat trick.

Sam Ersson wasn’t bad to start and then was left completely hung out to dry before being pulled in favor of Ivan Fedotov after Montreal’s 5th goal and the Habs didn’t let up, netting one on Fedotov before the end of the middle frame.

Ryan Poehling set a new career high with his 12th goal of the year and added an assist late, but it was Lane Hutson and the Canadiens who got the last laugh with 3 goals in the 3rd and officially eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers from playoff contention for its 5th straight year.

Day 2 of Flyers training camp has come and gone, and today’s show will catch you up on everything happening with the team as they prepare for the 2024-25 season in Voorhees, NJ.

Charlie, Kelly & Bill discuss Matvei Michkov on a line with Morgan Frost, as well as the differences between last year’s surprisingly strong season and this year where the “snuck up on them” factor is to be assuredly lower.

Will the additions of Michkov, healthy Jamie Drysdale and a goaltending tandem of Sam Ersson and Ivan Fedotov be enough to keep the Flyers competitive, and maybe even make the postseason?

Despite opening the 4-game road trip with a loss to the previously winless San Jose Sharks, the Philadelphia Flyers have rattled off 3 straight wins to close the trip, with victories over the Ducks, Kings, and most recently the Carolina Hurricanes.

The win over the ‘Canes was especially impressive, as it ended a two-year, 8-game losing streak against Carolina.

It's important to note that on the day Jack Eichel returned to the Buffalo Sabres lineup, the Philadelphia Flyers took the Alex Winter-lookalike on an excellent adventure, repeating yesterday's history with a convincing 3-0 win.
Carter Hart got credit for the shutout in this one, stopping all 28 pucks directed towards him on Sunday afternoon, while Philly potted all three of its goals in a 21-shot second period en route to a blanking of Buffalo.
Sean Couturier finished off a great play he started in the neutral zone by putting home a loose puck on in the paint to get things started, Michael Raffl got a stick on a nice point shot from Robert Hagg for the second, and James van Riemsdyk netted his tenth of the year on a beautiful deflection off a Joel Farabee shot/pass.
It was another solid, necessary performance from the orange and black, dominating a team they should dominate to close out a 3-0 stretch against awful teams based in New York.
Now it's on to March, which will start with three straight in Pittsburgh before returning home for three against the Washington Capitals, with a bonus Buffalo game thrown in for good fun.

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Flyers were right back to looking like the listless team they’ve been for a majority of the season, after what was a promising performance on Saturday.

Aleksei Kolosov was up and down in his debut, but it was a completely non-existent forecheck or any offensive push that doomed Philly against the Montreal Canadiens.

Bill, Steve and Charlie break down the game, and what might be next for Kolosov and Emil Andrae.

For a second straight night, the Flyers scored the game’s opening goal, but went to the first intermission trailing 2-1, and again, the New York team never looked back. Back-to-back regulation losses to division foes now have the Flyers falling further from Stanley Cup Playoff contention.

The biggest news in the NHL, however, is a huge trade between the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks which will send Mikko Rantanen to the Canes for Martin Necas and Jack Drury. Taylor Hall is also headed to Carolina from the ‘Hawks.

Bill & Kelly react to Flyers/Islanders, as well as Carolina GM Eric Tulsky making one of the biggest trades the NHL has seen in a while.

After a solid 2-1-0 start to the season, the Flyers take on the co-favorites to win the Western Conference (both EDM and the Avalanche are +500 to win the West, +1000 to win the Cup on DraftKings), with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night.
