::pocket computer pings:: Greetings siblings! Your favorite It and They are coming back to town and we know what you need. WHOLESOMECORE! We got your quirky robit questions, your quaint little inlets, your wicked hot space blacksmiths. Oh yeah, and we got anarcho-primitivists trying to tell us exactly how much of anything to have. So pull up a cushion, grab your favorite tea, and learn to accept that a meaningless life is just as good as a meaningful one. 01 Jul 2020 | 0G109: Uploaded and For-Profit Afterlife | 00:42:42
Welcome to Amazon Prime, the best media empire money can buy as long as we're not talking Disney or Netflix money. Here in Amazon Prime you can enjoy shows that are either too slow and deep to be accessible, like Tales from the Loop, or shows too shallow and mainstream to convey any meaning, like this weeks installment, Uploaded! Uploaded is the kind of show that would be free in the heaven depicted by uploaded. We use it to discuss the dangers of a for-profit afterlife and the coercive implications for even the healthiest among us. Assuming you've got your autopay setup correctly, otherwise these show notes are all you get. There really need to be more papers on the ethics of for-profit uploading. 17 Apr 2019 | 0G53: Zima Blue and Projects of Worth | 00:38:22
Welcome to the beginning of our show's blue period. Until I decide otherwise we'll only be doing sci-fi that's blue themed. Waterworld. The Shape of Water. Mr. MeSeeks. Yellow Submarine. Don't worry, there will be some deeper meaning to it all that you'll probably fail to grasp but will pretend you understand at parties. Okay, enough meta, we're doing the Zima Blue episode from the Netflix series Love, Death, and Robots. It's a stand alone episode, which is good for a variety of reasons. We're also going to be discussing Susan Wolf's theory of projects of worth. Hopefully this all feels like a project of worth for everyone involved, and hopefully they're not wrong. 24 Apr 2019 | 0G54: The Fifth Element and Manacheanism | 00:43:34
Well, it looks like we're taking another beloved classic and ruining it with our patented ruining sauce. I'm not sure if that makes us team good or team evil, or maybe it proves that those things make no sense, like this movie. Of course we save most of the darkness for after dark and focus on a debate over the nature of evil between Manachean dualism and St. Augustine's "absence of good" model of evil. If the world depended on getting Thomas to buy into this distinction as valuable, I'd recommend you use that last match to light up. This episode is about Eugenics in much the same way that Firefly is about the civil war. That is to say, it's okay that we're the baddies here cause we're loveable scamps. 29 May 2019 | 0G59: Endgame and Moral Saints | 00:39:48
As luck would have it, Mr. Smith, we're in the one and only timeline where you can make a difference. Snap your fingers and you can make the superhero movies go away forever, but only at the cost of never seeing the space babies ever again. Should you be expected to make that snap? This week we're talking Endgame and another famous concept by Susan Wolf, the issue of "moral saints". This topic relates to several others we've mentioned, including the demandingness objection to ethics and the utility pump. As with Infinity Wars, we save all our real gripes for NASA. I built a superintelligent robot to write these show notes, and it just kept repeating the word "meta" over and over and over again. Not sure if it's a feature or a bug. While we sort it out, enjoy our episode on Asimov's The Evitable conflict, where he first describes The Zeroth Law of robotics. We explain the law, the problems it faces, and how they connect to issues like virtue theory and questions about god. This episode is perfectly calibrated to produce the ideal outcome for all beings in the universe, so you're guaranteed to enjoy it. The Evitable Conflict and The Zeroth law of robotics. Can we successfully explain the plot of Dune, and thereby avoid the podcast jihad? How many side characters with weird makeup choices do we have to cover before we can actually get to the philosophy? What philosophy are we even going to talk about in this jumbled acid trip of a christ tale? Those who can't accept the state of reality are doomed to dissatisfaction. Those who can accept the state of reality are doomed to things being as they are. We're reading N.K. Jemisin's short story Cloud Dragon Skies, which I highly recommend you read carefully before the episode and then reread after the episode because we have a very interesting difference of experiences on how we read it that we discuss on the show, and we want to hear your experiences! We also discuss the ethics of geoengineering, in particular some less often cited non-consequentialist arguments. This episode and other stuff we've been doing has me really thinking about how it's even possible to find a balance between acceptance and progress. And now another installment in the deeply caring relationship that is our show. Can caring be shared through podwaves? I like to think so. Feel the care just flow out over you. Try not to think about how this relationship also feels like creepy paternalistic programming. This is all totally normal. This week we're covering I Am Mother, a new piece of sci fi horror by Netflix. There's a lot of good philosophy packed into this middle of the road production, and we set some of it aside to combine with next week's content. 20 Nov 2019 | 0G81: HBO's Watchmen and Reparations | 00:49:47
An excerpt from Rorschach's rebooted journal: Viewers are afraid of HBO, for it has seen their true faces. The shows are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and boobies and when the drains finally scab over, all the bingers will drown. The accumulated filth of high budget, high concept sex and murder will foam up about their waists, and all the millennials and the boomers who's log ins they use will look up and shout "can't you make less compelling content", and HBO will look down and whisper "no." We're doing the first episode of Watchmen (with some minor references to the second episode)! The HBO version for the main show, and the movie version for NASA this month, so definitely get on that if you want to here Thomas complain about three hours of Zach Snyder. Are you seriously reading the show notes?! Don't you know that reading is the worst thing you can do in a Lovecraft story? That and being a person of color. And reading while a person of color, that is right out. We're starting our first of many forays into Lovecraft Country, both the book and the show (and eventually the larger mythos). We cover the general structure of both book and show, with some non-spoilery references up through episode seven. We discuss the role of othering in Lovecraft's racism and his cosmic horror, and how Lovecraft Country transforms the other by centering a variety of marginalized groups. There's really is no better way to honor such an important racist than by using his work to tell the stories of the oppressed.
