What is a Wendingo?  In the north woods of the midwest and the central regions of Canada are said to live a malevolent being called a wendigo. This creature may appear as a monster with some human characteristics or as a spirit who has possessed a human being and made them monstrous. It is historically associated with cannibalism, murder, insatiable greed, and the cultural taboos against such behaviors. Known by several names — Windigo, Witigo, Witiko, and Wee-Tee-Go — each roughly translates to “the evil spirit that devours mankind.”

On this episode of B's and Queens with Caitlin Palmer, we meet Dr. Evan Antin.  While most people may recognize the local vet that takes care of their pets, chances are there are few vets that are recognized outside of their community. Dr. Evan Antin is one of the few vets that may actually be familiar to most of the population. He has more than a million followers on social media, where he shares his work with animals ranging from baby rhinoceros to tiny puppies, and is PEOPLE magazine’s Pet Vet.

He also has an Animal Planet show where people can watch him treat a large range of exotic animals. His work can take him all over the world, though he works at the Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital in Southern California when he’s home.

This amazing man is often referred to as one of the sexiest vet’s alive. He’s even had a buzzfeed article titled such, and was given the title by People’s Magazine. One look at his face is all you need to confirm how sexy he is, but there’s more to him than just looks. His respect for animals and passion for wildlife conversation are every bit as attractive as his face.

How much he cares about animals is evident with just a few minutes of watching him work. In one episode of Evan Goes Wild, he must get deworming medication into an elephant. Elephant’s have a keen sense of smell, and though he wrapped the pills in attractive “pill pockets” made from grass, grains, and fruit, the elephant still knew which one had medicine in it.

Through patience, respect, and trust in the animal, he was able to convince it to eat the medication. This is just one example of many patient and sweet moments he has with animals.  Get to know this amazing human and how you can join his mission to make this world a better place.

Raised by a single mother and her grandparents and living in a low-income, minority neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, she attended school in a predominately white area in Santa Monica. At school, she felt like an outsider and was ashamed of her heritage. She tried to conceal who she was so she could fit in with other students. She didn’t want anyone to know that she spoke Spanish, and she straightened her naturally curly hair. As she matured, she realized the mistake she was making and vowed to never again be ashamed of who she was.

We all have plenty to learn from Tatiana. We hope her story inspires you to dream big and never let anyone stop you from being your beautiful self.

On this episode of Simply Pets with Shannon Gregoire, we meet Tina Hansen.  Tina  is one of the hardest working veterinary students out there. Her drive started early in life, and came to a head when she spent a year in the military. She was given a choice between becoming a medic, which she had a passion for—and working with military dogs, another passion.

She went to Namibia for 5 weeks a while after high school to a volunteer project, “Naankuse”. Her team was working with all types of wildlife and horses. That is when the conservation bug bit her and she’s been volunteering a lot since then. Some of the trips she’s made included a week spent volunteering with elephants for a foundation Thailand. She later spent 2 weeks in Zimbabwe at an antelope park working with lions and horses.

In the next 5 years, she hopes to be an inspiration for others, and someone they can turn to for advice. She hopes to be a positive force for good, both for animals and for people.

In West Virginia folklore, there's a mysterious beast that is reported to be a winged humanoid with red eyes who most know by the moniker, Mothman.  The first sighting of Mothman was in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the late 60's.  Since then, sightings have been reported all over the world.

On this episode we learn all about the mysterious Alaska Triangle. The Triangle is a place in the untouched wilderness of Alaska where people go missing at a very high rate.  Where are they going? What happens to them?  Listen while hosts Caitlin and Clay Palmer piece together the evidence to discover the truth behind the myth. 

The Alaska Triangle connects the state’s largest city of Anchorage in the south, to Juneau in the southeast panhandle, to Barrow, a small town on the state’s north coast.  

The area began attracting public attention in October 1972, when a small, private plane  vanished into thin air while flying from Anchorage to Juneau. Despite the search and rescue efforts of  dozens of civilian planes and military aircraft plus dozens of boats, no trace of the plane, the men, wreckage or debris were ever found.  And that's just one of the weird stories.

Lately it seems you just can’t get in to see your vet. A new study from Banfield Pet Hospital reveals an estimated 75 million pets in the U.S. may not have access to the veterinary care they need by 2030, with an important factor being a critical shortage of veterinarians.

This pandemic pet boom has overwhelmed veterinarians nationwide, so getting an appointment with a local vet has become increasingly difficult. 

So-- What is the leading cause of the veterinarian labor shortage? 

Healthcare workers and those in public service-facing roles have borne the brunt of this pandemic, and that includes veterinarians. While much of our attention has been focused on the COVID-19 virus and how it affects humans, it’s important to remember that animals never stopped needing medical care as well. Unfortunately, the pandemic accelerated an already worrying trend in this regard. Simply put, veterinarians are overwhelmed. According to National Pet Owners Survey, 70% of U.S. households had a pet in 2021 (approximately 90.5 million families.) Yet, there are only 86,000 licensed veterinarians. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics recently went so far as to update the 2020-30 job outlook for vets – at an incredible 17%. That’s almost 5,000 new veterinarians being added every year - just to keep up.

On this show, we speak with Caitlin Palmer, a veterinary receptionist at a busy practice in Mississippi to learn more.

For more than three hundred years, the tale of the Jersey Devil has fascinated people. According to the legend, in 1735 mom of twelve, Mary Leeds was giving birth to her 13th child at her home in the Pine Barrens in south Jersey when, out of frustration with the birth, she cursed the baby. What happened next? The child was born with wings, hooves, a tail, and a thirst for the blood of animals.

Flash forward, and now while the Jersey Devil is more associated as a hockey team mascot than an urban legend, there was a time not long ago when New Jerseyans were truly frightening of possibly running into this beast.

The name Chupacabra comes from the animal's reported vampirism—the chupacabra is said to attack and drink the blood of livestock, including goats. Each of the animals was reported to have had its body bled dry through a series of small circular incisions.

Sightings of Chupacabras have been reported in Puerto Rico since the 1970s.  Strangely enough, Chupacabras have since been reported all over the U.S. and South America.
