20 Jun 2020Chris Dyer: Visionary Skate Artist on Lockdown01:05:11

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Visionary Artist, Chris Dyer.  Chris grew up in Lima, Peru till age 17, where he was involved in 80’s skateboarding, 90’s surfing and street gang destructive activities.  He later moved to Canada to study art.  Today he is based in Montreal, where he works out of his home studio “The Positive Portal.”  Chris’ art is rooted in the skateboard culture he has been part of since he was a young boy, when he would draw his own board graphics.  That eventually led him to working in the California and worldwide skate industry, doing graphics for a variety of well-respected brands.  More recently, he was Art Director of California‘s Creation Skateboards, and these days he continues to do graphics for a bunch of big brands in the industry including Deathwish and Santa Cruz skateboards.  Because of his unique style of psychedelic art, and high productivity, Chris has become one of the leading figures of the North American Visionary Art scene.  This position has given him the chance to act as a bridge between the spiritual movement and both the street art and skate art movements.  Some of his broader artistic themes include consciousness, truth, oneness, introspection, personal development and kindness.  Chris manages his own Art brand, Positive Creations, which offers a variety of quality apparel and artsy accessories.  His work of all kinds is slowly reaching out of the underground, thanks to many magazines and books sharing his trippy art. It is the uniqueness of his honest soul expressions, and a solid social media presence that has helped him find his own following. Chris’ biggest joy is to make his fans happy and to meet up with them at the different events he performs at, so make sure to catch him somewhere and give him a nice hug.  Join Derik and Chris in this episode as they discuss Chris’ views on COVID-19, the last 10 years of his career, experiences with Ayahuasca, and the wacky rules of home ownership in Peru.

Learn more about Chris Dyer at www.positivecreations.net and follow him on Facebook at chrisdyerspositivecreations, Instagram at chris_dyer, Twitter at positivecreator and on his YouTube Channel.  His documentary can be viewed at https://positivecreations.ca/documentary/ and his Artventure videos at https://positivecreations.ca/category/videos/adventure-series/.  Also, be sure to check out his Positive Creations Hardback Book  and Chris Dyer Colouring Book.

This episode was recorded on Monday, May 17, 2020.  It features explicit language and an in-depth discussion regarding drug use.  Listener discretion is advised on this one, especially for young kiddos.  Audio quality is good, but not great as the connection was a bit weak communicating between Canada to a remote desert in Peru.

We acknowledge that this episode was recorded on the unceded, ancestral and occupied traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations of the Coast Salish Peoples.  As we live, work, surf and play, we say Mahalo to the Métis, Inuit and Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island and from around the world, who have stewarded these lands and sacred surf spots for thousands of years.

20 Jul 2020Madeline "Maddi" Leblanc - Getting ‘On Board’ a SUP to Battle Cancer01:30:48

If you google the word passion, you’ll find its definition means ‘strong barely controllable emotion’.  In this episode, I chat with Madeline “Maddi” Leblanc, about her passion or stoke for stand up paddle boarding and charitable causes.

Maddi was born and raised in Welland, Ontario, CAN a small quaint community located in the heart of the Niagara Region. Her journey began when she was only ten years old, watching two men paddle on SUP’s in Lake Huron, Ontario, CAN. When they came in from the water she approached them and they had offered to let her try their boards. The minute she hopped on she immediately fell in love with gliding on-top of the water. Since that day she only continued to beg her parents to buy a board. They struck a deal that they would help her purchase her first board if she would pay for half of it, and it would be her only Christmas present that year. Years passed and in December of 2012 she had received her first paddle board. In 2013 she took her board out for the first time on the Welland Canal, and it was at that moment that she had come up with the idea of her current fundraiser ‘On Board’.

In 2011, Maddi lost two friends due to two different types of cancer. The pain was unbearable and she did not know where to put that pain. The loss of her friends Lynn Lambert and Julia Turner hit not only Maddi deeply, but also the community of Welland and she knew she had to do something to give back to honour her friends.

Maddi launched On Board in 2014 and has been running the event annually ever since, raising over $40,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society specifically for brain cancer research. Since creating the fundraiser, sponsors had introduced her to the world of SUP racing which has completely turned Maddi’s life around.

In 2016 Maddi began SUP racing and has been forever changed by the competitive side of the sport. In 2017 she claimed the Ontario SUP Series overall Open Female Category winner, as well as the ‘MVP’ (most valued paddler) award for her On Board efforts. At the end of the season she signed on as a team rider with ‘Starboard’ one of the worlds leading SUP companies. In 2018 she made an even bigger statement winning the overall Elite Female Category with the Ontario SUP Series, as well as taking the overall win and the yellow jersey at the 2018 and 2019 Mammoth Race in Toronto.

When Maddi is not on the water she dedicates her time to inspiring others to work hard and chase after their dreams. She does this through guest lectures at her school, providing inspirational talks in her local community and beyond, as well as sitting on panel discussions about women in sport. Currently Maddi is working on her Masters thesis at Brock University, where she hopes to inspire the world of academia with her research in the outdoor recreation and environment sector. Maddi also is a certified WPA Level 1 instructor and teaches SUP Kids at Paddle Niagara during the summer months. Maddi hopes to combine her passions to create meaningful impact in her future career while motivating her peers to do the same.

Maddi says “If Lynn and Julia taught me anything, it is that life is too short so if you want something bad enough, go out there and get it! Have fun, and be kind along the way.”

Learn more about Maddi and register for On Board at www.maddileblanc.com and connect with her on Instagram at @maddi3leblanc on Facebook at @maddi.leblanc.5 and on Twitter at @MaddiLeblanc17.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Mark Sanders, otherwise known as Mark Malibu of Mark Malibu & The Wasagas (@wasagas_surf).  Catching their 2nd wave, the Wasagas (www.thewasagas.com) are Canada's original Surf Punk Instrumentalists existing from 1979-1982. They were groovy teenagers living far from the west coast. They played with many new-wave and punk bands confusing audiences everywhere.

It was not easy playing surf instrumental music when clubs wanted Black Sabbath, Black Flag or...any other band wearing black clothes with vocals. They did, however, manage to align with some other young bands around town and play the usual Toronto dives like the Turning Point, Larry's Hideaway, Cabana Room to name a few. They also managed to record 7 original songs which appeared on several Post Punk compilations distributed around the world.

Back with a vengeance as they reunited in 2014 for several shows with all original members. That’s 32 years later! The future promises to be interesting for these retro-fitted Wasagas. They signed with UK’s Sharawaji Records and released three full length  LPs  "Return of the Wasagas" and "Crash Monster Beach" which entered the international surf charts at #1 and remained there for 6 weeks...and now "Dance Party a' Go Go" which has also reached #1 in the charts. Now a staple on the Canadian Rockabilly/Surf scene, there are many live shows coming to your town... Surfs Up again!

This episode was recorded on March 2, 2021 and may contain coarse language that could be deemed offensive.  Listener discretion is advised.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Bob “Aqua Doc” Beaton.  Bob Beaton is a surfer dude.  It’s what gets him out of bed each morning; it’s what he dreams about at night.  Put a southwest wind on the weather forecast for Grand Haven and it’s a safe bet the “Aquadoc” will be at the South Pier rock pile chasing down the waves with surfers more than half his age.  Beaton started surfing in 1962 when beach-themed movies romanticized the sport with scenes of bronzed athletes catching every wave, bikini-clad women basking in the sun, and all-night parties on the beach.  Beaton routinely plans his day around the wind and waves.  While drinking his first cup of coffee each morning, he boots up his computer.  His home page is set to the live beach camera at Grand Haven.  He chaired the Grand Haven Pier Safety Task force from 1988-1996, an organization formed after several pier deaths in 1980.  Others have admired the surfer for the dramatic rescue he made on Nov. 10, 1975, the same night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down.  That night, Beaton saved a boy from drowning in 14-foot surf off Grand Haven, for which he was later awarded a Congressional Lifesaving Medal.  In the 2003 surfing documentary “Step Into Liquid,” Beaton is featured in a segment dedicated to Great Lakes surfing.  He owns a small retail business that he closes when the surf’s up.  His dedication to surfing remains true.  And although no longer in his athletic prime, put Beaton on a surfboard and he rides with the enthusiasm of a kid.  If it weren’t for people like Doc, people might not even know you can surf on Lake Michigan.

Check out http://www.sandhillcity.com/glsa.htm and connect with Doc on Facebook at bob.beaton.589.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Mark Mattson, one of Canada’s most seasoned environmental lawyers and the founder of several water charities, including Swim Drink Fish.  In addition to being Swim Drink Fish’s President, he is the Waterkeeper for Lake Ontario, a water quality advisor to the International Joint Commission, a board member for the US-based Waterkeeper Alliance, and a member of Ontario’s Great Lakes Guardians Council.  One specific goal shapes Mark Mattson’s life and work: swimmable, drinkable, fishable waters for everyone.

Swim Drink Fish is a nonprofit organization working to connect people with water since 2001.  They use citizen science and communications technology to inspire people just like you to know and safeguard your local waters.  Their apps and programs can help you get to the water’s edge. They’ll connect you with the water and with other people. They can teach you to monitor the health of your water. Together, you’ll advocate for the protection and restoration of the places we all love.  Because everyone has a right to swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.

For more information on Swim Drink Fish and to learn how you can help, be sure to visit  www.swimdrinkfish.ca and check them out on Instagram and Facebook at @swimdrinkfish.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Norm Hann about his passion for oceans, coastlines, and the powerful connection between people and the environment.  After a university basketball and high school teaching career in Sudbury, Ontario, Norm made the decision to travel west to enroll; in a wilderness guide training program in Vancouver. Upon completion he was hired as an adventure guide in the Great Bear Rainforest on the north coast of British Columbia.  In 2006, he was given the ultimate coastal honour of being adopted by Eva Hill into the Raven Clan and given the name T’aam Laan meaning “Steersman of the Canoe.”

In 2008, Norm discovered stand up paddleboarding and with almost a decade of guiding experience under his belt in the Great Bear Rainforest, Norm Hann Expeditions was born.  Shortly after the first couple of sup trips to the Great Bear, the real threat of oil tankers traveling through the area began to take shape in the form of the Northern Gateway Project.  Norm decided to paddle the proposed tanker route. The route was from Kitimat 400km south to Bella Bella. The expedition was called Standup4Greatbear and to inform everyone of what was at risk. Standup4Greatbear Society continues to promote the education, awareness, and protection of the Great Bear Rainforest and the Great Bear Sea, through conservation expeditions, featured talks and presentations.  In 2012, Norm was contacted by acclaimed filmmaker Anthony Bonello to bring the story of the threat to the coast to a larger audience. Shortly after recruiting talented photographer Nicolas Teichrob, the Stand film project began. The film highlights Norm’s 350km expedition along the coast of Haida Gwaii, the Heiltsuk students of Bella Bella building their own wooden cedar paddleboards, along with the surfing and coastal connection of waterman and Tofino local Raphael Bruhwiler.  Norm believes that as paddlers we have a responsibility to stand up for these places that give us so much and to protect these areas for future generations.  Norm Hann Expeditions can connect you with powerful environments so that you can build your own personal connections and experience the things in life that matter the most.

Thanks to depictions like the 1987 hit film, Harry and the Hendersons, we tend to limit sasquatch sightings to the dense rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.  But with over 27.8 million hectares of forest in and around the Great Lakes, could this not make for a perfect Bigfoot vacation destination?  In this episode, Derik Hyatt deviates from the topic of surfing to investigate whether or not sasquatch might be watching you surf at those heavily wooded surf spots on the Great Lakes.  We chat with Olin Fruetel of Great Lake Sasquatch about Great Lakes sightings, his own personal experiences, common threads across encounters, the trauma and recovery process of seeing a sasquatch, surfing sasquatch and sasquatch theories, including the idea that sasquatch are waiting for COVID-19 to destroy the human race so that they may roam more freely!?!?

Be sure to connect with Olin on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/greatlakessasquatch/ or @greatlakessasquatch and don’t forget to read CBC’s Sasquatch reports wanted: new group collecting sightings from Thunder Bay region at https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/great-lakes-sasquatch-1.5231576.  This episode was recorded on December 9, 2020.  It is family friendly with minimal swearing, but no F-bombs.

It’s been a long and exciting journey, working across the country and internationally as a guide and instructor, to his current home in Tofino BC, where the waves are much bigger. Emre is passionate about instruction and learning along with people. He is excited to be developing Canada’s most comprehensive SUP instruction program, drawing resources upon his experiences as a guide trainer, whitewater kayak instructor and sea kayak guide.

Emre is always stoked to share his love for catching waves and learning in the outdoors. If he’s not figuring new ways to share the world of paddling with others, you know where he can be found: In the surf.

As a pioneer in BC’s Stand Up Paddlesurfing scene, be inspired by his origin story growing up in Burlington, ON, Whitewater kayaking and his transition to living the dream as an innovator in Stand Up Paddlesurfing on Canada’s west coast.  Learn more about Emre, the state of Tofino during the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, SUP Surfing, SWELL Education, Paddle Canada and the Annual West Coast SUP Synposium.

Reta is an all around whitewater paddling enthusiast that specializes in whitewater stand up paddling.  She has paddled on rivers in Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

In addition to SUP you can always find Reta going with the flow; singing her way down a river behind the oars, working on crushing bigger lines in her kayak or sending it!  Reta just wants to be on the water!

Reta is the founder of CANRVRSUP Instructor Collective.  She started the collective to bring instructors together in hopes of supporting her passion to grow a safe community of River Stand Up Paddlers through quality instruction and training. As head instructor and Paddle Canada Certified Instructor Trainer, she plans to work with all the collective instructors to provide high quality training for all students wanting to take courses related to SUP.

Reta fell in love with SUP after she was first introduced to it in 2010.  It is a sport that anyone can enjoy and the sport can be as challenging as you want it to be as you progress from flat water on lakes to whitewater on the rivers.

Reta's favourite places to paddle are the Kananaskis Valley in Alberta, Trail Wave on the Columbia River in British Columbia and the Tana River in Ecuador.

17 Aug 2020Dr. David Christopher Lane: Tom Blake - The Surfer and His Philosophy (and Other Controversial Subjects)01:43:06

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews author of Tom Blake: A Surfer’s PhilosophyDr. David Christopher Lane.  Dr. Lane is a professor of philosophy and sociology at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California who specializes in the study of new religious movements including cults and the interface between science and religion.  He is known for his book The Making of a Spiritual Movement: The Untold Story of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar which exposed the origins of Eckankar and demonstrated the plagiarism of its founder, Paul Twitcell.  Dr. Lane is also an avid surfer and bodysurfer, having won the World Bodysurfing Contest in 1999 and the International Bodysurfing Contest 8 times between 1997-2016.

In this episode, Derik and Dr. Lane chat in detail about American swimmer, lifeguard, stunt man, inventor, writer, early vegetarian, philosopher and one of the most influential surfers in history and founder of California surf culture, Tom Blake.  Described by his biographer Gary Lynch as the obvious link between the ancient South Pacific waterman and the twentieth century Anglo waterman, Blake was born March 8, 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Dr. Lane informs us that Blake’s mother died when he was only 11 months old and his father abandoned him when he was still a toddler.  He didn’t graduate high school.  His marriage lasted less than a year and he had no children.  He had very little money.  He lived most of his life by himself.  Some regarded him as a beach bum.  Yet, his simple philosophy radically changed the lives of millions in less than a century.  His achievements include:

  • 1922 – set the world swimming record in the ten-mile open
  • 1926 – first person to surf Malibu, along with Sam Reid
  • 1928 – won the first Pacific Coast Surfriding Championship
  • 1928 – invented the hollow paddleboard
  • 1929 – invented the water-proof camera housing
  • 1931 – invented the sailboard
  • 1931 – patented and manufactured the first production surfboard
  • 1932 – won the Catalina Paddleboard Race
  • 1935 – invented the surfboard fin, aka. Skeg or keel
  • 1935 – published his first book solely devoted to surfing, Hawaiian Surfboard (republished in 1983 as Hawaiian Surf Riders)
  • 1937 – produced and patented the first torpedo buoy and rescue ring, both made of “dua-aluminum”
  • 1940’s – behind the first production sailboards
  • 1969 - in Surfing magazine, authored an early draft of Voice of the Atom, a wave-riding-inspired religious philosophy, the core equation of which, Nature = God, he later carved this into a rock in Wisconsin
  • 1982 – published Voice of the Atom
  • Being a leader in physical fitness, natural foods and healthy diet
  • Virtually began the surfing lifestyle as we know it

For more on Blake, get a copy of Tom Blake: The Uncommon Journey of a Pioneer Waterman by Gary Lynch or the Tom Blake Scrapbook, both available online at https://shacc.org/ from Croul Publishers in Newport Beach.

Lake Erie is a beloved and indispensable part of our lives. As the most biologically diverse Great Lake, a major drinking water source, and the site of countless memories made, Lake Erie is essential to not only humans, but the well-being of our entire ecosystem.

But the health of our Lake is currently under serious pressure from:

  • Annual, often toxic, algal blooms, that threaten aquatic, animal, and human health;
  • Plastics pollution that is accumulating at an alarming rate;
  • Invasive species disrupting the ecosystem’s balance;

The compounding pressures of climate change, is also making matters worse.

In order to recover and prosper, Lake Erie needs our attention and help.

Each summer, athletes from across the watershed come together for one legendary event: the Lake Erie Challenge; all to raise awareness and funds for our beloved lake.

In this episode, meet the athletes and staff from Canadian Freshwater Alliance.  This year we have three teams of athletes: Team SUP, Team Wingfoil and Team Caldwell.  Stay tuned to hear from Raj Gill, Tim Blanchard, Sara Chojnicki, Patricia Kittelberger, Brad Petrus, Derik Hyatt, and your hosts Ashley van der Pouw Kraan, Kelly Laforet, and Julia Foody.

When you donate to the Lake Erie Challenge, you're supporting local Lake Erie Guardians, and their work improving the health of the Lake Erie watershed, including water quality monitoring, the reintroduction of native plants, advocacy for freshwater protection, and more! With your support, we can equip even more citizens to become caretakers of Lake Erie.

This year, our athletes want to raise $7500 so we can continue and expand our Lake Erie Guardians program in 2022. Help us reach our fundraising goal!  Visit www.freshwateralliance.ca/lakeeriechallenge and donate today.  Mahalo!

11 Jul 2020Vince Deur: “Unsalted” - 15 Years Since the Perfect Wave at Stony Point01:29:47

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Great Lakes surfer and filmmaker, Vince Deur from his home in Grand Haven, Michigan as he reflects on his experience directing the 2005 56-minute film, “Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience,” which follows Vince on a road trip around the 5 Great Lakes to meet and surf with other landlocked surfers.

The film begins with videotape footage Vince recorded in November 1990, when he nearly drowned while surfing Lake Superior near Whitefish Point.  Vince had been caught in a rip current for about an hour, trying futilely to swim to shore, before being suddenly released by the current. Back on dry land, he pledged on camera that he would one day make a film about surfing the Great Lakes.  Unsalted combines home movies of lake surfing going as far back as the 1960’s with contemporary footage culled from 150 hours of filming.

The documentary ends on January 22, 2005, when Vince and several pro-surfers from the Ocean Pacific surf team reached the tip of Lake Superior, 24 kilometers northeast of Duluth, Minnesota, in Stony Point, to encounter the "biggest, cleanest ... most ocean like wave" Vince had ever seen on a lake.  The film would go on to screen at film festivals on four continents, with Vince becoming a contact person for surfers around the world who wanted to experience surfing the Great Lakes.

You can connect with Vince on Twitter @vincedeur and watch his videos on Vimeo and his YouTube channel.  Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience is available for purchase on Amazon.

10 May 2021Jonathan Wayne Freeman - Canadiana 101 for Kooks01:42:00

@freshwatersurfgoods presents #PERMASTOKED, Your #Canadian & #GreatLakes #Surf & #SUP #Podcast, THIS YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS!!!  Season 2 Episode 5: Jonathan Wayne Freeman – Canadiana 101 for Kooks…sponsored by Surfin' Eh!? Magazine @surfin_eh & The Central Canadian Surfing Association @centralcanadiansurfing is Now Available Free for Streaming and Download on the Alexa App, Amazon Music, iTunes, Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/permastoked/id1518415157Podbean, Google Podcasts at https://podcasts.google.com/search/permastoked, iHeart Radio Stitcher, Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/6qsR6lN7M7edO798HSBxpj, YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChueUd4VG0WYXN3ky532vzg? Or wherever else you get your podcasts from.  Be sure to Listen, Rate, Review and Share!

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Jon Wayne…not the cowboy, but the Nerf gun wielding funny man and Instagram star Jonathan Wayne Freeman who has more in common with the Duke of Surfing, the Big Kahuna himself, Duke Kahanamoku.  That’s right, this middle-aged influencer has been making mediocrity excellent since 1979 and shakaing since 1985.  Some call him the saviour of surfing, the second coming of Bodhi from 1991’s Point Break.  Spawning from his comedic Instagram shorts, Surfer made this Kook of the Day the host of the Ultra Core Surf Hour, which JWF says is “about nothing, and everything – and surfing.”  Men’s Journal added him to the list of “12 Instagram Accounts Every Surfer Should Follow in 2020” while the Neighbourhood Watch added him to the list of “12 People Whom You Should Not Allow to Babysit Your Children.” (kidding!)

Tune in to hear about JWF’s departure from being a paramedic and switch to becoming a full time Kook, how to become who you were meant to be, his comedic influences including Adam Sandler which leads to some rad Billy Madison impersonations, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, surfing of course, and last but not least, they explore the unknown elements of Canadian culture while JWL becomes devastated to learn that not all Canadians are clones of Bob and Doug McKenzie!

To follow Jonathan Wayne Freeman and his shenanigans, follow him on Instagram at @jonathanwaynefreeman and be sure to watch the Ultra Core Surf Hour on YouTube.

This episode was recorded on February 8, 2021 and features adult content.  Listener and viewer discretion is advised.

During these somewhat dark COVID times, we can often be at risk of surrendering to the doom and gloom of isolation, boredom, and hopelessness; but in the spirit of Christmastime and the Holiday Season, allow yourself to be reminded by our youth that hope lies ahead in both the present and future.  In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Canadian female surfing prodigy, Mathea Olin.  Listen as this 17 year old pro surfer takes this 38 year old kook to school all hour long while she drops wisdom bombs about being yourself, keeping fun at the centre, inspiring others, staying stoked in trying times, training hard, loving what you do, having a growth mindset, and eating ice cream on the road to the Olympics.

Mathea Olin was born on February 2, 2003 in Canmore, Alberta.  At six years old she and her family moved to Tofino, BC where she fell in love with surfing and began competing only four years later.  Her accolades include: winning Canada’s first ever international medals in surfing which included gold in longboard and bronze in shortboard at the 2017 Pan Am Surf Games; and bronze in longboard at the 2019 Pan Am Games.  Mathea’s aspirations include competing in the world Olympics and being the first Canadian to enter into the World Tour.  Keep your sights set on this Queen of the Peak; because as long as she froths for surf, she is bound to make Canadian Surfing Herstory!

To connect with Mathea Olin, follow her on Instagram at @mathea_olin and be sure to watch Mathea And Paige Alms Experience The Wave-Riding Roots Of Haida Gwaii in Redbull’s short film Northern Tides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=-5Ukx5MzkJU&feature=youtu.be&linkId=77408384&fbclid=IwAR3sVT94UNTqModDTKkAD4LFQuXdD7LGg2YS7xHAdhxT4365B8NUNHbJXbA.

27 Jul 2020Catherine Bruhwiler - International Surfing Day with Canada's First Female Pro Surfer01:07:50

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Canada’s first female Pro Surfer, Catherine Bruhwiler.

Catherine is a lifelong local Tofino surfer who loves to spend most of her time in the ocean. A talented surfer with a beautiful style, Catherine is an incredible ambassador for her hometown of Tofino, B.C as a first-generation surfer in Canada. Now a surf coach and surf mom of one of Canada’s first Surfing Olympic hopefuls, Kalum Bruhwiler Temple; Catherine represented Canada at the Pan American Games in 2019 as one of the first members of the Canadian Surf Team. As one of the 9 qualified SUP Surf females in the Americas, this was an unbelievable dream come true for one of Canada’s first professional surfers. Catherine has 2 children, 9 nieces and nephews and a grandchild she loves to surf with.

Catherine grew up surfing the cold waters of the Northwest Pacific coast, on northern Vancouver Island, with her 3 brothers, at a time when there were no other females in the water. Growing up on the rugged beaches, they would explore and hike through dense forests, remote beaches, often in massive rain storms, looking for remote beaches to surf. They would camp out in in the wilderness for days at a time on their surf trips, fishing and foraging for their meals. She and her brothers were young pirates, exploring the coast of Vancouver Island and often other countries, on their quest for their golden treasure; the perfect wave. These cold remote waters and forests of Canada are home to Catherine.

Catherine is an inspiration and ambassador for young girls, as she has won the Woman’s National Canadian Surf title many times and makes the podium in every long-distance paddle board race and surf contest she enters. She won the 2017 and 2019 Canada’s National Women’s SUP Surf Championships and in December of 2017 and 2018 in Peru, qualified for a spot the Canadian Team for the 2019 Pan American Games. She continues competing and winning awards in both local and international surf and SUP events.

Catherine helps run the local Boardriders Surf Club on Canada’s west coast and runs the annual free and very well attended kid’s surf contest, the Bruhwiler Kids Surf Classic, with her family. Catherine often travels with the Junior Canadian Surf Team as a coach.

As a Paddle Canada and ISA SUP and Surf Instructor (Levels 1&2) and Instructor Trainer for Flatwater SUP, SUP surfing, surfing and SUP touring, she coaches surfing and paddle boarding full time. She loves surfing with and coaching the local kids and is very committed to inspiring and motivating the younger surfers to keep their aspirations and passions alive.

Catherine is an active volunteer and ambassador for a few environmental organizations including Surfrider Foundation and helps promote education around protection of the ocean and beaches. Her business, events and personal brand team up to fundraise, educate and promote environmental actions. She believes that in sharing her love of nature with others and helping them fully enjoy it she can help foster inspiration in others to care and protect the ocean.

When she is not teaching and coaching surfing with her brothers Sepp and Raph or out on the water paddle boarding, she will be found traveling, camping and surfing the remote coastal surf breaks with her family and friends, finding new waves and slices of heaven on Vancouver Island’s remote coastline.  With her vast experience growing up on the ocean and surfing, Catherine brings a wealth of local knowledge to all her endeavours.

Catherine is sponsored by Werner Paddles, Live to Surf, and Aftanas Surfboards and is the proud Owner and Operator of Tofino Paddle Surf.

Follow Catherine’s adventures online at https://tofinopaddlesurf.com/ and on Instagram at @cathbruhwiler and @tofinopaddle and on Facebook at @catherinebruhwiler and @TofinoPaddleSurf.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Vice President of the Alberta River Surfing Association and Co-Founder of Surf Anywhere, Jacob Kelly Quinlan.  Tune in to hear them discuss the history of river surfing in Alberta, the Kananaskis River Wave, what it takes and how to build a river wave in your community, discovering river waves around the world, and much more!

Jacob Kelly Quinlan learned to surf in Australia.  However, upon his return home to Alberta, substitutes such as snowboarding, longboarding and SUP didn’t seem to scratch the itch; until he was introduced to river surfing on Calgary’s Tenth Street Wave!  River surfing soon took over his life, and for over a decade, he has traveled around the world growing the sport, competing, promoting safety, building new waves and fostering community around river waves.  He has introduced hundreds of people to river surfing by providing lessons and many more through his efforts as the Vice President of the Alberta River Surfing Association.  He played an integral role in fundraising for and building the world’s first government approved, community-built river wave in the Kananaskis.  In 2018, Jacob and friends began filming their expeditions.  Unsurfed Afghanistan is now released to the festival circuit and due for international release in 2021.

You can connect with Jacob Kelly Quinlan on Instagram at @jacob.kelly.surfs and on his YouTube Channel.  Also, be sure to check out www.albertariversurfing.com, www.surfanywhere.ca, www.unsurfed.com and The Wave We Choose.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Art Business Consultant and wife of Drew Brophy ( @drewbrophy ), best-known for his @lostsurfboard designs in the 1990’s, Maria Brophy.

Maria’s driving force is to help empower people to take action to create a life that they want!  In the late 1990’s, she decided what kind of life she wanted to live;  She wanted to travel most of the year and work for herself in a creative business.  It took a few years, but eventually arranged her life in that way.

You could say that she lives a dream lifestyle, traveling the world while running a gallery space in San Clemente, California and selling art for a living.  But she does work very hard for it all!

She has dedicated the last twenty years to developing strategies to sell the artwork of her surfer husband, Drew Brophy.  After thousands of hours of study, research and hands-on-experience, she has become an expert on art licensing, deal making, and selling art, especially surf art.  She learned how to grow Drew’s art sales beyond multiple six figures, every year since the late 1990’s.

All while traveling two to three months a year; and sometimes more than that.

She even started writing a blog in 2009, to help other artists along the way.  And then started sharing information in books:

Amazon best-selling book ART, MONEY & SUCCESS

Co-Authored HOW TO DRAW WITH DREW BROPHY published by Walter Foster

Co-Authored PAINTING SURFBOARDS CHASING WAVES

17 May 2021Marcus Paladino - I Have Become Comfortably Cold01:18:59

I know what you’re thinking: “Who the heck is Marcus Paladino?”  Well, he’s your cold-water king of surf photography. Through neoprene stiff fingers and frozen eyelids, Marcus is dedicated to capturing high-performance surfing on the west coast of Canada. He lives above 1/800th of a second, but isn’t afraid to slow things down. It’s sex, drugs and rock & roll, but also, it’s smooth jazz and a cup of tea. A habitual homebody just itching to get out of his comfort zone.

Surfing is the reason he wakes up every morning.  He doesn’t matter. The endeavour of marathon swims in bone-chilling and heart-pounding conditions is irrelevant. What’s important to him lies in front of the lens. The split-second moments that most people don’t even know exist; capturing them forever instead of letting them pass by.

04 Jul 2020Pastor "Waikiki" Jack Nordgren: The Greatest Story Ever Told (About Surfing on Lake Michigan)00:58:35

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Great Lakes and Hawaiian surfer and the author of Life Lessons from Proverbs (Practical applications for life from the book of Proverbs), A Lake Surfer’s Journey, Wave Chasers (Searching for Surf on Lake Michigan), Wave Chasers 2 (Searching for Surf on the Great Lakes) and S.U.R.F Journal, Pastor “Waikiki” Jack Nordgren.

Jack was born and raised on the South side of Chicago. At the ripe young age of 15 he absolutely fell, head over heels, in love with surfing. His friends asked him to try out their boards while on summer vacation in Michigan.  He then became as he terms it, a surf-a-holic.  He ate, breathed, and lived surfing.

After high school, to avoid the draft, he joined the Navy. There he spent almost 2 years aboard a nuclear submarine.  During that time, he married his high school sweetheart, Maree, but also began to experiment with drugs.  Through a series of heart-wrenching events he came to the end of his perverbial rope.  He then began reading the Bible. God revealed Himself to Jack and he asked Jesus to take over his whole life.  He soon led Jack and his family to a ministry in Waikiki Beach.

In 1984, a small Bible study of ex-drug dealers and users, under Jack's leadership became Hope Chapel South Shore.  After 22 years of pastoring and surfing in Waikiki Beach, he and his wife moved to Michigan to continue ministering and surfing.  Jack has since retired and returned to Waikiki to surf and spend time with his 11 grandchildren.

Join us in this episode as Jack shares his humble 1960’s surf beginnings on Lake Michigan, his time in the Navy, surrendering to God and ministering in Hawaii, surfing, faith and he even offers up valuable marriage advice.

Connect with Jack Nordgren at http://waikikijacks.com/ or on Facebook and Instagram @jacknordgren.  His books are available on Amazon, including: Life Lessons from Proverbs (Practical applications for life from the book of Proverbs), A Lake Surfer’s Journey, Wave Chasers (Searching for Surf on Lake Michigan), Wave Chasers 2 (Searching for Surf on the Great Lakes) and S.U.R.F Journal.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Toronto musicians and surfers, Wayley and Kadeema guitarist, Tal Vaisman.  They discuss both their musical and surfing origins and influences, becoming Wayley, moving forward with Kadeema, the hospitality of the Toronto surfing scene and finally whether or not the music of Jack Johnson is considered cool or passe.

Born and raised in Toronto, Wayley blends Indie, Folk, and Pop, to create a full band sound and anthem-style sing-alongs similar to the likes of Vance Joy, The Lumineers, and George Ezra.  At age 18, Wayley moved to a small beach town on the east Coast of Australia called, Coogee.  This is where he developed a love and passion for surfing, which he draws a huge amount of inspiration from.  His lyrics explore subjects anywhere from heartbreak to self encouragement that are held together by catchy choruses and sounds bites that you won’t forget.  After moving back to his hometown of Toronto, Wayley released his first single off his forthcoming EP in May of 2020, which received high praise from the press. After signing with Paris based Publishing Company ORA, he released his newest single “Waiting for You” in August of 2020.

Tal Vaisman is a Toronto based producer, engineer, songwriter and professional guitar player.  He is an honorary graduate of the Metalworks Institute Audio Production/Engineering program and has worked with a multitude of both local and international musical acts over the years.  His musical work credits range from Canadian rock bands like Black Collar Union, Little Foot Long Foot, Sons Of Revelry, The Envy to Sway Clarke II under Island Records UK, Hammercult (under SPV Records Germany) and many more.  Tal has also worked with EDM and pop acts such as Shaun Frank, Automatic Toys and Twin City and X.Ari.  Some more recent credits include playing guitar for rising Country singer, Justin Tyler, and Canadian pop singer, Victoria Duffield, as well as production for Christee Palace, Julian Daniel and American teenage pop and American Idol contestant, Adem Dalipi.

Tal also contributes both as a songwriter and as a musical producer to Family Channel and Netflix shows such as The Next Step, Lost And Found and Orphan Black.

Tal has also composed music for various commercials for companies such as Mazda, Shoppers Drug Mart, Whirlpool, Nestle, Fiat and more.  In addition, Tal was the guitarist and one of two primary songwriters for the Ontario Rock band, Ascot Royals, with whom he toured Canada multiple times opening for bands like Big Wreck, Our Lady Peace and Matthew Good Band and many more.  They’re singles “New Skin”, “Best Is Yet To Come” and “Evil I Know” have received major airplay over rock radio stations as well as streaming platforms.  In 2017 they won the CASBY award for “Best New Act.”  These days Tal plays in a new Band called Kadeema with his long time musical partner Jimmy Chauveau.

For more information, visit Wayley online at www.wayleymusic.com and on both Facebook and Instagram at @wayleymusic.  Also, be sure to check out Tal Vaisman’s band, Kadeema, on Facebook and Instagram at @kadeemamusic.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt interviews Owner and Head Instructor of Surf Culture Canada and Founder of Kitestock, Tim Blanchard.  These two Windsor-Essex County Natives discuss the power of Lake Erie; Tim forming a band named Sublime before the actual SoCal Reggae Dub band, Sublime; windsurfing; the history and development of Canadian kiting on the west coast and the Great Lakes; escaping the grips of US Border Patrol for posing a threat to Homeland Security by kiting on the Detroit River; Kitestock; foiling; snow kiting, wing surfing, kiting on a food tray, SUP, surfing and more!

Well-traveled waterman and Puce resident, Tim Blanchard started windsurfing in his early teens.  At 20 he traveled extensively, spending a year in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Costa Rica where he caught the surfing stoke. After University he moved to Victoria, BC and spent his summers training for competitive windsurfing in Hood River, OR (The Gorge) and Lake Nitnat.  He began his kiting journey in 1999 along with Ross Harrington (head designer of Ocean Rodeo) and the rest of the Victoria crew. His first kite was one of Ross’s hand made 8m four line kites.  He got in over a hundred sessions at Lake Nitnat during the summer of 2000, mastering his kiting skills, before moving back to Ontario to attend Teacher’s College.

Being years ahead of everyone else in the region with his polished skills and powerful riding style, he quickly became the poster child for Great Lakes high-performance kiteboarding.  During the spring of 2001 Tim took part in the first Internationally Certified Instructors Training Course taking place in Cape Hatteras, NC.  He has since trained 1000’s of students and several instructors over the past 20 years.  With over 25 years of water sports experience in the World’s Oceans and the Great Lakes, he can provide you with the proper skills and knowledge to safely get on board.  He was also the Great Lakes rider for the Naish North American Team from 2001-2006.  Due to work, instructional and family responsibilities he only competed a few times but was the “King of Great Lakes Big Air Champion” and placed second overall at the 2001 IIes de la Madeleine World Cup event.  His current day job as a high school science teacher, experience as a collegiate track and field athlete and crossfit athlete/trainer make him uniquely qualified to provide the best instructional experience in Canada.

Today, in its 20th year of operation, founded in 2000 by Tim, Canada’s first certified instructor, Surf Culture Canada has pioneered the sport in Southwestern Ontario and is committed to the continued promotion of kiteboarding and other wind and wave sports in the Great Lakes and Southern Ontario.  Surf Culture Canada has some of the most passionate and experienced instructors in the world and is also equipped with the latest equipment which makes learning faster, easier and more fun.  As Canada’s first kiteboarding school, with over 1000 lessons taught and 7000+ hours of combined lesson and riding time, Tim Blanchard is your kiteboarding authority in Ontario.

The most experienced, the most respected, Tim Blanchard and Surf Culture Canada have been featured in: KiteBoarding Magazine, Kiteboarder Magazine, OLN, CBC Radio, Global TV, Intersections Magazine (Mazda), and local TV interviews.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with pro surfer and “American Hoser”, Kevin Schulz!  Why a hoser?  Because this 26-year-old San Clementine has been made an honourary Canadian after falling in love with both Great Lakes and East Coast swell, along with its people, and of course Tim Horton’s sour cream glazed donuts.  Though, being true to his American roots, he is also a bit of a cowboy, or more specifically an “air cowboy!”  Designed by Perfect Swell the people at American Wave Machines created the Freak of The Peak to launch surfers as high as possible with no resemblance of a normal wave nor does it mimic the ocean in anyway.  Kevin performed a backflip so casually at 2019 Stab High event in Waco, Texas during practice that was such a stand out that it was deemed the biggest air landed resulting in 10K award to Kevin.

Other interesting facts about Team USA’s Kevin Schulz: he loves coffee, rides goofyfoot, and has a Siberian Husky.  Be sure to watch Kevin’s sick air at https://stabmag.com/stabcinema/kevin-schulz-takes-the-freak-peak-and-10k/.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt explores the bond this father-and-son duo has developed through surfing.  The love they share is truly special and can be spotted a mile away through Jamie’s “Gift to Gab” overpour with stoke over his son’s accomplishments and humble nature.  At only age 9, we talk to Jameson about his 7 years of surfing, chat with Dad about how to introduce your child to surfing, and examine how the @greatlakessurfgrom Instagram profile blew up!

Jameson would like to say Mahalo to his sponsors as he is super-stoked for all their support: @m22life (Traverse City, MI), @nocoastsurfboards (Grand Rapids, MI), @thirdcoastsurfshop (St. Joseph, MI),  and @wingman_water (Royal Oak, MI).
