We had to talk about Joe's incredible Double Bass drumming book that is celebrating its 40th anniversary, Joe explains the concepts behind this book and talks about the accompanying & groundbreaking VHS that accompanied the book that i and im sure many other thousands of young drummers owned back in the 80's.
Joe talks about his time with Twisted Sister having taken over the drum chair from AJ Pero and his dissapointment that the bands producer decided to use Joe's programmed drums on the album Love is for suckers... This was only intended for demo purposes, i think its testamant to Joe's talent as a drum programmer, to create such great sounding drum tracks with the limited resources available to him in the 80's.
Anybody who knows me knows that i have a mild obsession with Premier Drums, Joe was the poster boy for Premier in the 80's and 90's along with Rod Morgenstein so we had to talk about Joe's incredible and long lasting relationship with Premier
What a way to spend 45 minutes, chatting to one of your drumming Hero's!

We chat about how and where it was recorded and the process of learning the material to perform it live on the tour. We also about his lockdown project involving a performance of Eric Whitacres "Sleep" with a virtual Marimba Choir, bringing together 227 percussionists from over 40 countries to perform this stunning work online, Joby tells us how this was achieved without using a click track!
I really hope you enjoy this conversation with a quite remarkable musician, something a little different from the regular drummer interviews!

Join Mikey and myself as we chat about his career so far - We of course talk about The Graveltones, Mikey's love/obsession with Coffee, we share our mutual love of vintage drums and how sad it makes us when we see vintage drums that have been fitted with modern components, something that irks every vintage drum nuts!
We also talk about his unique style, and how his instantly recognisable set mutated from a more regular set up.
Mikey is an incredible drummer and a great human being to boot, check out his performance from the 2022 UK Drum Show on YouTube if you are in any doubt!

We also talk about his work with the late great Charles Bradley and how his soulful style was the perfect fit with Homers beautiful and equally soulfull touch on the drums.
Homer speaks at length about how he thinks drummers should recieve a writing credit for coming up with a drum part for a song, he explains that had this happened many years ago then the likes of the late Clyde Stubblefield could have had a much more comfortable lifestyle later in life as the composer of one of the most sampled drum beats in history "The Funky Drummer"
We also talk about the sessions with Mark Ronson about the Amy Winehouse Back to Black sessions of which Homer played on half of the tracks on this iconic album, he lso tells about how Valerie was recorded live in the studio with Amy Winehouse singing!

Homer kindly offered to let me use the beautiful playing that you hear over the titles totally free of charge, definitely more drummy and more in keeping with the nature of this podcast.
