One thing I do know is that the Lord uses all things for good, even traumatic birth experiences. Marisa is a mom to 4, birth doula and stellar story teller! She came on the show today to share her 3 hospital birth stories which included a NICU stay, nerve damage from an epidural and an induction. Well the peaceful homebirth retreat was this past weekend and the best word I have for it is magical. Sarah Buckley is trained as a GP/family physician with qualifications in GP-obstetrics and family planning. She is the mother of four home-born children and lives in Brisbane, Australia, where she is a PhD candidate as well as writing and lecturing on pregnancy, birth, and parenting. 

Dr Buckley’s work critiques current practices in pregnancy, birth, and parenting from the widest possible perspectives, including scientific, anthropological, cross-cultural, psychological, and personal. She encourages us to be fully informed in our decision-making; to listen to our hearts and our intuition; and to claim our rightful role as the real experts in our bodies and our children.

She is also a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland,, where her research is focused on oxytocin in labour and birth and the impacts of interventions. See her professional, peer-reviewed publications as part of her PhD here

Her bestselling book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: A Doctor’s Guide to Natural Childbirth and Gentle Early Parenting Choices, published by Celestial Arts/PenguinRandomHouse (US, 2009), builds on her acclaimed first edition, published in Australia as Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: The Wisdom and Science of Gentle Choices in Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting (One Moon Press, Brisbane, 2005, available as ebook here ).

Dr Buckley has an ongoing interest in the hormones of labour and birth, and this has culminated in her groundbreaking report Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing (2015 Childbirth Connection, a program of the National Partnership for Women and Families). Katherine is a trained medical doctor (MD) with a masters from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health where she studied reproductive biology and maternal and child health. She finished her IBCLC while on maternity leave in medical school. She now has 3 daughters, ages 5, 3, and 1 (as of Dec 4), Her husband, Rand, is an ER doctor for the US Air Force. Katherine works from home offering consulting for fertility, pregnancy, birth support, and lactation. She also homeschools her first-grader.

I have another homebirth story for you today! Samara chose to have a homebirth after experiencing 2 hospital births that weren’t exactly what she was looking for. She had a deep desire to homebirth and through a turn of events she pursued that option with her third.

If you’re a first time mom you have probably asked or will ask “but how will I know when I’m in labor.” That’s such a good question but I also think it may not be as important to answer as you think it is. For my last 3 births I have experienced prodromal labor which feels like early labor and it lasts for 2-3 weeks before I actually end up having a baby. This has taught me a few things… I’m excited to share with you today what my exact routine is for when I go into labor and the questions I ask myself so I’m prepared for what’s ahead. Early labor is my absolute favorite and I think that I can attribute it to this routine. This is also what I would tell all of my doula clients to do.

I love a good birth story and this one is so sweet! If I had a quarter for anytime I heard a first time mom say she’s going to birth at a birth center or hospital for the first one “just in case.” There is no “test run” in your childbaring years. Every birth is so different and deserving of love, care and respect. Each birth is different and each birth matters. My “test run” birth with my first baby which ended in a c-section, obviously set me up with a deficit in future births.  And for 30% of women birthing in a hospital it’s also setting them up with a deficit as well. I’m seeing a movement of first time moms, like my guest today, make empowered and faithfilled decisions to birth at home and it makes me so excited! You are apart of the movement to make homebirth the FIRST option in our country! Changing cultural norms takes time but it starts with you and your family.
