12 May 2021Pawareness Podcast # 29 | How One Dog Inspired a Succesful Rescue | SNARR Northeast Rescue00:20:54

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Courtney Bellew, Founder of SNARR Northeast Rescue (Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation), a New York-based organization that doesn’t turn away animals with severe medical problems or high costs of care.

Courtney talks about the biggest challenges and limitations animal rescues face, the positive impact of social media on animal welfare and rescue, as well as the heart-warming adoption story of a paralyzed pooch. Plus, she shares her thoughts on what needs to change and what laws and regulations need to be put in place to help animal welfare and rescue organizations in the US.

“It’s a balance… It’s part of what I do by running a rescue is trying to balance out what we’re spending, what we’re bringing in, and trying to decide whether it’s okay to take a big medical case at the time or not.”      - Courtney Bellew

Harris shares how he started his website and gained traction by connecting influencers and partnering with brands by promoting online content related to cats. On top of this, Catfluence is also able to provide an opportunity for cat influencers to explore ideas on the best way to promote their content and to establish their social media presence.

01 Dec 2021Pawareness Podcast # 58 | Student-Led Organization Serving Feral Cats | ERAU PAWS00:28:43

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Sandy Branham, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Digital Studio Director of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Jonathan Rust, President of the PAWS. As a student-led organization, PAWS carries out the mission to conduct TNR for cats within their campus and foster abandoned kittens for adoption. Members of the organization try to balance this mission in the midst of their academic responsibilities.

One unique feature that the organization maintains is their feeding station located outdoors on their campus property. This is where students feed the cats twice a day. Since they started as an organization in 2018, PAWS has served 123 cats. Currently, they are working on a new feeding station so they can provide food for more cats and encourage other students to participate in this humane initiative.

“If you don’t have enough people, you don’t have enough time to do stuff. Meeting more people who are interested in joining the club is gonna be something that we strive for. There will be more cats and we definitely need more people to help handle everything.” - Jonathan Rust

Tune in to find out how college students can make a change in their campus by providing humane initiatives for stray animals!

10 Nov 2020Pawareness Podcast # 11 │ Kris McCauley - About The Founder00:04:03

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, I’m doing something different. I’d like to tell you a bit about myself and why this podcast was created. To start it off, I’m just your average, passionate, animal-loving entrepreneur. Having grown up with a bunch of pets, my love and respect for animals started young. Fast forward to 2020, I’ve been running a few different businesses and was introduced to fostering and rescuing dogs. I didn’t seek it out, but when I started fostering, I quickly saw and felt the fulfillment it gave me.

Just before the pandemic hit, I was volunteering with the Humane Society. It was great, but I felt like I could make a bigger impact. That’s when I got the inspiration to ask 150 animal rescue organizations this big question: What problems are you facing in your rescue? The three main problems that came up were money as a resource, space as a resource, and awareness. I knew I could tackle awareness, and so, the idea for the Pawareness Podcast was born.

I don’t have any professional experience with animals, but I do have the mindset that one person can make a world of a difference. So here we are! I’ve learned a ton already from these first 10 episodes and I have many goals for the future of this project. Come along with me on this eye-opening journey of learning, spreading awareness, and connecting with animal welfare leaders from across the nation.

Thank you to everyone who has already joined, we’re making a difference!

06 Jul 2022DOG PARK WITH BEERS | The Doghaus | Pawareness Podcast No. 84 00:16:28

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes The Doghaus Co-Founder Kevin Simpson. The Doghaus is a sports bar and a dog park. They welcome dogs of all breeds as long as they are being taken great care for by their owners. Located in St. Louis, Missouri, The Doghaus is a dog-friendly park where owners can chill and where pets can play.

What inspired the founders in opening their park is the demand for pubs and bars in their local community. Kevin and his co-founders thought about opening a unique business that is also inclusive to animals. Once they made their announcement on social media, they received a lot of positive feedback from the locals themselves.

Aside from operating as a business, The Doghaus supports and raises funds for local animal rescues and shelters. They make sure that animals in their community have a home and family to live with and to spend the rest of their lives. They also organize animal-centered events such as birthday parties for dogs.

If we can do two or three of these things and franchise the business, that would be my dream.” - Kevin Simpson

25 Feb 2022Pawareness Podcast # 66 | Animal Communication | Martha Malone00:35:49

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Martha Malone. As a professional animal communicator, Martha is able to receive from, deliver and render messages to animals who are living and those who have passed on. Martha uses energy to communicate with animals, using telepathy as a channel to give and deliver messages.

Martha recalls how she became a professional animal communicator. She spent years searching for a career that fits her. Although she has had experiences in psychology and massage therapy, Martha finds communicating with animals fulfilling. She explains that animal communication can vary from one situation to another, and the best way to unravel what they mean to say is to listen and to rely on energy. Marth also explains that animal communication can help rescues and animal organizations by letting animals understand that they are being taken care of.

Communicating with animals is a soul-to-soul connection.” - Martha

24 Jun 2021Pawareness Podcast # 35 | Fear-Free Animal Trainer | Brett Reynolds00:22:31

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Brett Reynolds, Head Dog Trainer at The Dog Stop, a dog care facility offering daycare, boarding, grooming, training, and a retail store. Brett talks about the training services they provide and how the animal training industry, as well as training strategies and techniques, have changed over time.

Brett explains common training mistakes dog owners make, why you might want to enroll your dog in an enrichment program rather than daycare, and his candid thoughts on how long it takes to train dogs.

“Although there’ve been new discoveries, the way dogs learn hasn’t changed. I think people’s perceptions and people’s expectations, owning a dog, is vastly different than it was even five years ago.”       - Brett Reynolds

01 Jun 2022STOP ANIMAL BREEDERS | Animal Rescue Mission | Pawareness Podcast No. 8000:26:45

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Animal Rescue Mission Founder Shira Scott Astrof. As a non-profit rescue, Animal Rescue Mission aims to save abused dogs and cats in Los Angeles. The organization provides them with  adoption opportunities and safer places to call home. With a shelter based in Mexico, Animal Rescue Mission also takes in animals in need of rescuing from different places in the world.

Despite some challenging and overwhelming circumstances where they had to take in a great number of dogs, Animal Rescue Mission continues to pursue their advocacy in finding the right foster families for their animals. By doing a background check with foster homes, they make sure that the people who will provide homes for their animals are the right fit.

Addressing modern-day animal issues like the scarcity of spay-and-neuter clinics and the overpopulation of strays, Animal Rescue Mission supplies resources to communities that need solutions the most. Shira also cites that the inhumane dog breeding activity perpetuated by unlicensed organizations also poses a major problem that results in overpopulation. This is rampant in Los Angeles where awareness about animals needs to be raised and disseminated among communities.

“Animal cruelty needs to be punished.” - Shira Scott Astrof

13 Apr 2022Pets of the Homeless | Feeding Pets of the Homeless | Pawareness Podcast No. 7300:47:15

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Genevieve Frederick, Founder of Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a non-profit organization that aims to provide care and support for the pets of displaced and houseless individuals.

The inspiration behind the organization comes from Genevieve’s experience in New York when she witnessed a homeless man who was taking care of his pet dog despite having no resources at all. Seeing compassion first-hand, she realized that the homeless community needed more than just a space to live, but also resources to provide care for their animals. She began reaching out to businesses and church organizations that donated pet food, grooming services, and clothing for animals. Soon, the organization expanded with volunteers and partnerships.

Today, Feeding Pets of the Homeless provides immediate care and services for the pets and animals of the homeless community, as well those in the company of veterans. This includes discounted medical services from veterinary hospitals and clinics within the organization’s network for the injured and sick pets. Their programs also enable them to provide livable spaces for the pets in temporary shelters so they don’t have to part ways with their owners whenever they stay in these shelters.

We all know that the homeless are discriminated against, beaten up, but the animals can alert their owners that they are in potential danger. Their pet gives them unconditional love and protection.” - Genevieve Frederick

15 Jun 2022SAVING ANIMALS FOR ELEVEN YEARS | WAG Rescue | Pawareness Podcast No. 8200:18:13

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue Volunteer Coordinator and Director of Community Outreach Julee Reslewic. Providing homes for abandoned and surrendered dogs in a tight-knit community, the rescue aims to give another chance at life and an opportunity for hope for dogs in need of homes.

Since they started in 2009, the rescue has grown over the years with their services for dogs and pet-owners. They facilitate foster and adoption programs in the western Hayes County, Texas. By providing medical and emotional care for dogs, the rescue also collaborates with local organizations to fulfill their mission.

This year, the rescue is planning to expand their nursery which they started last year. This facility addresses the need for puppies to have a safe and comfortable environment as they develop into adult dogs. The rescue is also setting their sights on building a healing house for recovering dogs.

Eleven years is a pretty good number for a relatively small rescue. Our goal is to take in and help a hundred dogs.” - Julee Reslewic

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Kasey Fisher, the foster owner and volunteer of Happy Dance Dog Rescue based in Carrollton, Texas. Happy Dance Dog Rescue is no-kill, completely foster-based, and women-owned.

“You just kind of jump in… and you learn as you go, so if you don’t have a background with animals, that’s no problem. You can always just learn.”  - Kasey Fisher

Kasey gives insight into the importance of mentorship and not being afraid of failing in fostering, as well as what it’s like to foster a puppy and how their foster process works. She also gives valuable advice for those interested in fostering an animal and shares the inspiring story of her dog, Molly.

Tune in to learn the root causes of the stray dog problem in Texas, why you shouldn’t pick a foster animal based on emotion, and Kasey’s limitless vision for her own future dog rescue.

“Don’t worry about failing. There are so many roles when it comes to rescuing animals that we need all parts of it. We don’t just need fosters, we need donations, transport, volunteers, so if the fostering is not the way to go, that’s okay, we could use you in many other ways.”             - Kasey Fisher

06 Apr 2022Helping Animals in Greece | Let's Be SMART | Pawareness Podcast No. 7200:22:37

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Amber Rose Beck, Special Projects Coordinator of Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T., and Ellie Lofts, Adoptions Head of the organization. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Successfully Managing Animal Rights Today. With their mission to raise awareness about animal welfare, the organization commits to finding homes for animals, mostly cats, and has expanded their campaign to countries like Greece.

Ellie explains that the organization has been working hard to help address the overpopulation of stray cats, a prevalent issue in Greece. Due to this overpopulation, residents don’t really find the need to adopt cats. This is why the organization opens doors for adoption opportunities overseas. They help transport the rescued cats in their shelters to interested owners in countries like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. also offers the opportunity for volunteers to help save the lives and advocate for the welfare of cats who are in need of homes and families. In Greece, they provide an internship program for vet students who can render their expertise in medicating animals and keeping them healthy.

I think the whole mindset around animals and how they should be cared for in the streets would make a big difference.” - Amber Rose Beck

There’s a lot of kind-hearted people that try and help but we also need more support other than the basics.” - Ellie Lofts

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Robin Young, the outreach coordinator of the Richmond Animal Care and Control Center. Based in Virginia, this foundation currently serves over 3,000 animals a year, providing them with immediate care and raising funds for their needs.

With over seven years of experience as a volunteer for animal rescues and local shelters, Robin explains finding fulfillment in helping animals. With prior experience in television, Robin has rendered her marketing skills to help rescues, shelters, and animal organizations in their outreach activities.

Robin also shares advice on how to handle, address, and overcome compassion fatigue, a common experience among animal organization volunteers and staff members. She puts emphasis on taking an ample amount of time for rest. With proper self-care, no one will ever lose the original intention of the mission to help animals in need.

You have to have a love for animals and try to make a change. You’ve got to be able to handle the things that come on a daily basis. You can bring new ideas and open new possibilities for shelters.” - Robin Young

16 Feb 2022Pawareness Podcast # 65 | The Power of Volunteers | Lucky Dog Animal Rescue00:19:29

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Mirah Horowitz, the Founder and Executive Director of The Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. As a volunteer-run rescue based in Northern Virginia and the DC Metro Area, they rescue animals from high-kill shelters, especially those located in the rural south.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue started in 2009 after Mirah gathered like-minded volunteers from the community who are passionate about rescuing animals. Mirah recalls how government service has inspired her to lend a helping hand for helpless animals who deserve to have a second chance in life with a forever home and loving families.

Despite its name, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue now offers an active program for cats in the community. Their mission is to connect potential adopters with animals who have been neglected, at risk of euthanasia, and in need of care and attention. Today, they also focus on addressing the prevalent issues concerning animals in their community.

Our real mission is to try to help shelters that have no other help.” - Mirah Horowitz

27 Jan 2021Pawareness Podcast Episode 14 │ Recycled Toys For Rescue Animals00:13:31

Are you wondering how you can help grassroots animal welfare organizations while in lockdown? Look no further!

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Paris Miller, Founder and Executive Director of Project Canis, whose mission is to help animals in shelters by giving them toys made from recycled materials. This college student-run organization is already making a huge impact in Florida’s animal shelters and they’ve only been up and running for one year!

The best part is, it doesn’t matter what state you live in, you can get involved and help make a difference in the lives of shelter animals by volunteering with Project Canis from the comfort of your home, at zero cost to you. Paris speaks on about the enormous impacts of donating toys to animal shelters, such as improving the animals’ physical and mental wellbeing and helping them get adopted.

“The reality is that animals in shelters are left alone for hours on end overnight when there’s no shelter staff around and having just one toy can really provide a sense of comfort to an animal.” - Paris Miller

Tune in to see what kinds of toys Project Canis accepts, to learn more about the future of Project Canis, and to discover how you can volunteer with them or organize a service project of your own!

25 Aug 2021Pawareness Podcast # 44 | How Can Digital Tech Save Animals from Death Row? | Pet Pardon App00:26:59

In this episode, we welcome Sheryl Joyce, Founder and CEO of the Pet Pardon app. As the first platform of its kind, Pet Pardon aims to reduce animal euthanasia by spreading awareness about this issue and establishing a network and support for animal advocates, welfare and organizations, and pet owners.

Sheryl shares how she got the idea for the app when she discovered accounts of rescues and shelters on Instagram. When she learned about the rates of euthanized animals, even healthy ones that end up in shelters, she found the need to address it by using modern technology and utilizing current trends that educate and inform. By documenting the situation of animals in these shelters and releasing photos and videos on social media platforms such as Instagram, animal advocates can spread awareness about the animals’ situation and find support from similar communities. Pledging can also help support this advocacy.

Today, Pet Pardon app combines these features for a more convenient experience and to become a sustainable resource to help operate, fund, and support smaller rescues. After launching the first version of the app in March 2020, Pet Pardon now has hundreds of pledges from animal advocates and organizations. Currently, the app maintains its mission which is to support campaigns and advocacies that help reduce and entirely eradicate animal euthanasia in many countries around the world.

One of the things that really need to happen is educating the public. Education is the key for anything.” - Sheryl Joyce

In this episode, we welcome Kaitlyn Morris, founder of Mandy’s Paws Rescue. Kaitlyn started this rescue in 2019 to honor her late mother who had been an advocate for animal rescues for most of her life.

Kaitlyn shares how she has become inspired by her mother’s initiative to help and adopt animals. They would usually take in injured animals found on the streets of Los Angeles and nurture them back to their feet. Kaitlyn also shares some of the obstacles that she often encounters in running a rescue, most of which include facing criticism by sponsors. But eventually, Kaitlyn has learned the important ways to support the rescue. This includes vetting of foster families and checking if they have the ideal home and environment for rescue animals, getting connected with shelters and other rescue organizations, and keeping engagement with opportunities to help animals.

Currently, Mandy’s Paws Rescue has helped around 300 animals. They continue using their social media channels to network, amplify causes, and raise awareness. They are also currently working on their process to make the organization achieve a 501(c)(3) status.

“In the moment, when you make a mistake, just remember that it will be okay. You will get through it. If you choose to continue rescuing, you will be able to.” - Kaitlyn Morris

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Robin Coleman, Community Engagement Manager of Woods Humane Society. Based in San Luis Obispo County, Woods Humane Society has been offering services to animals for over fifty years. They provide shelter and care for at least 3,000 cats and dogs a year.

18 May 2022PARTNERSHIPS are important | Tails Humane Society | Pawareness Podcast No. 7800:26:42

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Tails Humane Society Executive Director Michelle Groeper. Located in Illinois, Tails Humane Society has been taking care of 3,400 animals a year. Most of the animals they take in are dogs, cats, mice, and all friendly and vulnerable species with fur. They aim to provide homes for these animals and medical care such as spay-neuter services.

Michelle defends kill shelters in communities that lack resources and assistance for adoption programs. While other shelters have the right connections and access to directly provide immediate homes for their rescues, some shelters lack these opportunities due to their location and environment. That doesn’t mean that they are not working on ways to uphold the animals’ lives and their chance to live.

Taking animals within their area and from those of southern communities as well as their partner organizations, Tails Humane Society maintains the mission to help animals in need and offer the immediate care they deserve. For them, keeping up with effective communication and establishing genuine connections are fundamentals to running a successful animal organization.

We need to make sure we are communicating how many dogs we can get with our foster homes.” - Michelle Groeper

18 Aug 2021Pawareness Podcast # 43 | Saving Cats Through Health and Wellness Activities | Yoga4Cats00:26:48

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Erin Rockafellow and Jeanette Skaluba, two of the founders of Yoga4Cats. Specializing in health and fitness, Yoga4Cats combines wellness programs with animal welfare initiatives. Based in Decatur, Illinois, Jeanette shares how Yoga4Cats began in 2015 as the first organization to shelter cats for fundraising and adoption. She explains how their community needs cat-focused rescue organizations. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Yoga4Cats provides these needs for the community.

This foster-based rescue carries out essential programs for wellness enthusiasts and cats in their community. They provide TNR’s, foster care, and fundraising events to support rescues, shelters, and animal organizations. They partner with local yoga studios where they conduct their events, and collaborate with yoga instructors. They use the funds they obtain from their events and merchandize for the veterinary services that the community cats need so they can live healthy lives.

I think there are progressive things happening, and a lot of them include getting the engagement from the community, from your local vets, from your volunteers and getting the right people involved for sharing that passion which results in a greater impact.”  -  Jeanette Skaluba

Community education is a huge factor in what we do. Thinking ways for people to know that the community exists and making the information more accessible will go a long way.” - Erin Rockafellow.

25 May 2022AIRBNB FOR ANIMALS | Doobert | Pawareness Podcast No. 7900:20:12

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Doobert Founder and CEO Chris Roy. Described as an “Airbnb for volunteers and homeless animals”, Doobert is a software and app that connects animal rescue organizations with volunteers and resources that will help locate animals in need of saving, transport them to shelters, connect them with potential adopters, and provide them with homes.

As a former pilot, Chris got involved with rescue organizations after a friend asked him to help transport dogs via an airplane to their shelter. Realizing that there was a lack of resources for rescue organizations to connect and access these animals, Chris took the chance to come up with the software as a database to address this issue. Chris and his team launched Doobert in May 2014.

Today, Doobert is still growing as a software and is proud to support more than 5,000 organizations and 35,000 volunteers with the mission to provide animals the homes and families they need.

The more I discussed and socialized with [animal] organizations, the more we learned how to keep expanding the software.” - Chris Doobert

05 Apr 2021Pawareness Podcast # 23 | Zach Skow and the Pawsitive Change Program00:36:37

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Zach Skow, Founder of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue and the Pawsitive Change Prison Program. Zach has an extremely inspiring story to tell you about how dogs and rescues saved his life. He talks about the Pawsitive Change Prison Program, which is an intensive program that works with incarcerated individuals to rehabilitate people and pets through vulnerability, making a significant impact on those released and reintegrated into society. Then, he shares shocking statistics about incarceration in the US and how the government can help rescues and prisons make positive impacts in the world.

“Incarcerated people and pets are my jam. That is what I focus all of my time on, that is what my life is dedicated to, and I feel very blessed and honestly fortunate to have that purpose to plug myself into.” - Zach Skow

Tune in to learn about Zach’s  journey of spontaneous entrepreneurship and how his non-profits have been affected by covid-19. He shares about how dogs have helped him connect to unconditional self-love and self-confidence, as well as what goals and projects he’s working on this year in 2021.

“For me, the silver lining of all this is we’ve been able to introduce a cross-section of our society, our culture, in black and brown folks and introduce them into an economy that is receptive, that is inclusive, and that is willing to engage with them and allow them to access their American dream through the pet industry.”- Zach Skow

Did you know? 40 of the incarcerated men enrolled in the Pawsitive Change Program have been released and more than 20 of them have since gained employment in the pet industry!

10 Nov 2021Pawareness Podcast # 55 | The Impact of Grassroots Initiatives | Luxe Paws00:25:08

In this episode, we welcome Jacquie Navratil, founder of Luxe Paws. Jacquie shares how Luxe Paws takes a unique approach in treating and helping cats in their community. By partnering with local businesses, they focus on helping cats from a grassroots level. That means spreading awareness about the cases and situations of stray cats in the neighborhood, and conducting local events to inform people about their initiatives in trap-neuter-return.

Jacquie also shares how Luxe Paws has utilized social media to inquire about the whereabouts of stray cats. To help reduce the cat population in their neighborhood, they asked people the location where stray cats are commonly found. She also emphasizes the impact of education in the local community when it comes to treating cats and rescuing them. It also helps a lot to encourage people to engage and to provide the right resources to achieve success.

28 Jul 2021Pawareness Podcast # 40 | Spaying and Neutering Community Cats | Street Cat Hub00:17:37

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Jayne Sage, Founder and current Board President of the Street Cat Hub. Serving the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico and the surrounding areas, Street Cat Hub provides humane spay and neuter services for homeless cats in these communities. Jayne recalls how she started the organization in 2014 as a follow-up to a program conducted by another animal welfare organization that partnered with city shelters in providing spay and neuter to feral cats.

Jayne also shares details about Street Cat Hub’s upcoming initiatives, such as their clinic and their partnership with the local shelter. Their organization finds it easier to provide services for feral cats when they are connected to the shelter. She also shares the common misconceptions on stray cats, especially when they need to adjust to a new environment before they can be comfortable in a new home. Some people often think that when stray cats become comfortable in a specific environment, they can easily adjust anywhere else.

Street Cat Hub is looking forward to reaching out to communities to provide their services for cats in more places. They provide services to 3,000 to 4,000 cats annually and they help roaming cats find suitable homes.

“One of the best things in working directly with a shelter is it’s really easy to find the cats.” - Jayne Sage

26 Jan 2022Pawareness Podcast # 62 | Addressing Pet Behavioral Issues | Pet Haven00:25:31

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Kerry D’Amato, Executive Director of Pet Haven. Pet Haven is Minnesota’s first and long-time running foster-based rescue. Since it was established in 1952, Pet Haven has gone a long way in helping animals in their community. From giving temporary shelters to cats and dogs previously surrendered by their owners to connecting them with their forever families and suitable homes, Pet Haven addresses local issues concerning pets and animals.

Kerry also explains that animal behavioral issues often discourage owners from adopting rescues. She believes that animals always have second chances, and even when they have behavioral issues, they are able to overcome them through effective methods. Because of this, Pet Haven provides the care and rehabilitation programs that animals with behavior issues need and deserve.

Kerry also believes that lives need to be saved, even those of pets. Pet Haven is working towards reducing the animal euthanasia rate in their community, as well as saving dogs and cats who are in crisis because of this.

We tend to take a little bit more risks than other rescues do, and that’s where we position ourselves. A life is a life and we want to save them all.” - Kerry D’Amato

She takes inspiration from their previous volunteering experience at animal rescues.

She observes the lack of TNR programs and services for cats in the Bronx, but also cites the dedication of trappers who do exceptional work. 29 Sep 2021Pawareness Podcast # 49 | What is Human-Grade Fresh Cat Food? | Smalls for Cats00:19:10

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Jibran Malek, Director of Partnerships for Smalls for Cats. Jibran shares how the business specializes in protein food with no fillers. Their products are carefully prepared by cooking human-grade ingredients, flash freezing them, and carefully packing them into dry ice with biodegradable insulation.

Jibran recounts how the pandemic has led their business to provide available cat food to pet owners who found it impossible to go out during lockdowns. Their subscription and delivery process has made it easier and more convenient for the owners to purchase and access their products. Jibran also points out the importance of being aware about what cat food is made of. A cat’s health depends on what they eat, and owners should know which ingredients or recipe provides the necessary nutrition for cats.

As a young business in the pet food industry, Smalls also advocates for animal welfare. They have partnered with various rescues. Animal welfare organizations inform them what they need, and Smalls conducts programs that will address them. They provide free products to every cat that gets adopted from their partner rescue organizations.

“We believe that every cat deserves a fresh start to their new life with their new owner.” - Jibran Malek

27 Apr 2022From Southern States to New York | Badass Animal Rescue | Pawareness Podcast No. 7500:21:34

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Krista Almqvist, the Executive Director of Badass Animal Rescue. Based in New York, Badass Animal Rescue has rescued an approximate number of 3,400 dogs since they began operations in 2011. Their primary focus is saving dogs at risk in high-kill shelters in the rural south. They take in and treat dogs with skin conditions such as mange, dogs in need of immediate medical attention, and dogs with injury.

Badass Animal Rescue connects with their partner organizations in southern states to know the animal situation in these areas. Dogs will then be treated in these organizations and receive care in temporary homes before being transported to New York. Once the dogs are relocated, they will be given immediate medical assistance and a comfortable shelter while the rescue is working on ways to provide them with the best homes and potential adopters. They spend quality time with each dog. Donations help run the rescue.

We go where the need is greatest and we save dogs in greatest need.” - Krista Almqvist

04 Nov 2021Pawareness Podcast # 54 | The Importance of TNR Classes | Sunset Park Cats00:26:55

In this episode, we welcome Sonia Leahey, founder of Sunset Park Cats. Focusing on trap-neuter-return, Sunset Park Cats rescues strays from the streets of Brooklyn, New York.

Sonia explains the importance of focusing on a local neighborhood to become more efficient in helping animals. This helps rescue organizations learn more about their community and build relationships with people to open more opportunities for collaborations.

Sonia also gives advice to people who wish to start their own rescue organizations to take one step at a time. Managing and carrying out the responsibilities of rescue organizations can be overwhelming, even at the local level, so it’s best to focus on one problem that needs to be solved first before addressing the other issues related to animal overpopulation.

There are some large rescues that run all over the city, but we strongly feel that having a laser-focus on your neighborhood and your local area makes the rescue more efficient and effective.” - Sonia Leahey

She details how cats are brought to cat cafés, what the adoption process is like, and what the future holds for The Purr & Pour Cat Café.

“Cat cafés are free-roaming cats in sort of a living room environment. You get to know their personalities, you get to know which cats are good with children, if you allow children, you get to see them blossom. We’ve had extremely shy, anxious cats blossom into wanting belly rubs and they end up sleeping in bed with their owners.”  - Patricia Devine-Harms

Tune in to learn why partnerships are essential for getting cats adopted from cat cafes and to hear valuable advice for people who want to open their own a cat café.

11 Aug 2021Pawareness Podcast # 42 | CrossFits that Help Animals | Reps for Rescues00:15:34

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Jon Swagert, Founder of Reps for Rescues. The organization aims to reduce animal euthanasia across the country by raising funds and donating to rescue shelters. They host crossfit competitions in various places for their fund-raising activities where they partner with gyms and other animal welfare organizations to help carry out their mission.

Jon recalls the time when he founded the organization. He says his passion in helping animals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with fitness programs like crossfit has inspired him to create the organization. With over 4,000 dogs being euthanized in the United States every day, he makes it a mission for his organization to help reduce these cases. His dog, Jackson, featured in the organization’s logo, continues to inspire him to acknowledge the importance of a dog’s life. Today, he and his wife are the core members of Reps for Rescues.

Aside from hosting and organizing fitness programs and raising funds through these activities, Reps for Rescues also releases educational videos for pet health awareness. He shares how Reps for Rescues has coped with the pandemic by maintaining engagement with their followers through an online competition.

Currently, Jon and his wife are raising awareness for adoptable dogs and supporting interested pet owners by helping them pay their pet bills and other resources that they need. They are also looking forward to hosting fitness programs for crossfitters, body builders, and fitness enthusiasts with the goal to support their mission in helping animals and animal shelters.

“The goal is to help any animal that we can by any means necessary. We are trying to do whatever it is that we can do to help as many animals as possible.” - Jon Swagert

30 Mar 2022Pawareness Podcast # 71 | Progressive Organizations | The Humane Society of Sedona00:20:17

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Antonio Lopez, the animal care supervisor of Humane Society of Sedona. The humane society saves around 600 animals per year. They work with rescue partners within and around Arizona, with the scope of their services and adoption opportunities reaching as far as Phoenix.

Apart from their programs that raise awareness about animal welfare and their services to provide adoptions for rescues, the humane society addresses common issues in their local area. Among these issues, the most rampant include the number of stray dogs roaming in the northern communities. Antonio wishes for people to help reunite these potentially lost dogs with their owners first before bringing them to the rescues. The rising number of community cats population also poses an issue. But they conduct activities with local veterinarians to engage the community in TNR activities so that issues of overpopulation and animal homelessness will no longer affect them.

The humane society has built partnerships with local businesses to pursue their mission. Most often than not, local businesses offer services to the animals they rescued. Pet food, as well as their donations, helps the organization provide the care and support that their animals need. When Kris visited their shelter last January, he was amazed by the quality of condition of the kennels that house the animals.

We try to work with animals that have behavior issues as best we can, and that is one thing that I wish we could really get something going for.” - Antonio Lopez

10 Feb 2021Pawareness Podcast Episode 16 │Community Cats - Stacy Lebaron00:20:34

In this episode, we welcome back Community Cats Podcast Founder and Primary Host Stacy Lebaron. Stacy has been our guest in the 6th episode of this podcast in 2020 where she provided details about the history of her podcast, what her organization is doing to save cats in communities, and the events they handle to support cat owners and animal shelters.

We are glad to have Stacy back in this episode where she unveiled the plans that Community Cats Podcast has for this year, including webinars, conferences, and initiatives to help pet food distribution for animal welfare organizations. She also shared how the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected animal shelters and the ways that Community Cats is helping them address their problems.

“I get so much feedback from the folks that attend, and I get to hear the stories of what they’re doing. We’re just thinking about different ideas about how folks can better leverage the resources they have in their communities to be able to help community cats, and it’s those individual stories, the listeners, and people who attend the events that really inspire me.”

17 Nov 2021Pawareness Podcast # 56 | Addressing Cat Overpopulation in Australia | The Barn Cats Project00:17:11

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Emily Wright, Founder of the Barn Cats Project. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the Barn Cats Project aims to rehome stray and feral cats, as well as address their overpopulation issues in their community. Emily shares that the overpopulation of cats often threaten the population of native species and wildlife in Australia. Founded in January this year, her rescue aims to rehabilitate homeless cats so they wouldn’t have to prowl the streets and antagonize wildlife in rural areas.

Emily explains some of the initiatives that the Barn Cats Project is taking to fulfil their mission. Some of these examples include raising awareness through education programs, responding to calls related to the concerns involving cat colonies in neighborhoods, and providing homeless cats with proper homes. Although trap-neuter-return is illegal in Australia, the Barn Cats Project takes the necessary approach to connect homeless cats with the right owners and suitable homes.

We started with trying to find farm homes for cats who can’t live in homes for people.” - Emily Wright

18 May 2021Pawareness Podcast # 30 | Mental Health in Veterinary Practice | Traveling Dogtor00:21:03

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Shelby Baden, the Executive Director and Founder of the Traveling Dogtor blog. Through her blog, Shelby raises awareness about mental health for healthcare and veterinary students and professionals. She shares how she started Traveling Dogtor as a blog that would give tips to vet students while she was in vet school. But it later evolved into a more promising venture where she explored the relevant topics on mental health. This is partly due to the experiences that many vet students go through.

Shelby also recommends activities that will help people cope with mental health stresses. One of these includes journaling, yoga and meditation, and reading. She maintains awareness by sharing her mental health struggles in her blog where she keeps encouraging people to know that they are not alone with their struggles. Shelby also emphasizes the advantage of building a community on social media where people can engage and interact to discuss the common struggles associated with mental health. This applies not only among vet students and professionals in the healthcare industry, but also among individuals going through tough experiences and moments.

Find good mentors. Find someone who loves being a vet. If it’s your passion, you don’t want to be discouraged from that. Maintain  and foster relationships with your mentors. At the end of the day, no matter where you go, you’re gonna need a recommendation for a job. Connections are important.  - Shelby Baden

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley sits down with the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter Receptionist Catherine Moore. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, the shelter takes in animals from Tuscaloosa City, Northport City, and the areas covered by the scope of Tuscaloosa County.

Catherine stresses the importance of raising awareness about the benefits of spay-neuter for dogs and cats in the local communities. The shelter also organizes various programs that provide opportunities for rehoming animals through digital communication. Collaborating with local veterinary clinics, they provide medical procedures such as spay-neuter to address animal overpopulation.

26 May 2021Pawareness Podcast # 31 | The Animal Welfare Bill with Senator Stephanie Hansen of Delaware00:32:08

This week, we are releasing a special episode where we host a panel discussion with Senator Stephanie Hansen of Delaware and Courtney Bellew, the founder of the Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation (SNARR) Northeast Rescue.

In this episode, Senator Hansen provides details on how she came up with Bill 139 which will prevent abuses for household dogs and rescues in Delaware. It will protect dogs from being left outside for a long period of time during extreme weather and tethering for long hours. When government officials work closely with animal welfare organizations and lobbyists, the problems that many animals suffer from will easily be addressed.

In the same way, Courtney Bellew shares the importance of elevating the causes of animal welfare organizations to the government level. She also advocates for stricter laws and regulations for spay-neuter programs so that the homeless animal population will decrease.

Tune in to find out how animal welfare organizations can unite to raise awareness and resolve the problems experienced by animals in their community to the government level!

What’s really important is relationship-building. We’re talking about how to get something. You start with relationship building. Reach out to legislators and tell them about your campaign. Get involved in the process of legislation.” -- Senator Stephanie Hansen

“The dream and hope one day is that, if there were stricter spay neuter laws and regulations, a lot of the homeless animal population will decrease.” -- Courtney Bellew

06 Oct 2021Pawareness Podcast # 50 | Addressing Las Vegas' Animal Euthanasia | Heaven Can Wait Animal Society00:19:13

In this episode, we welcome Francesca Fulcinity, Executive Director of Heaven Can Wait Animal Society. Located in Las Vegas, Nevada, Heaven Can Wait Animal Society was established in 2000 to address the high rate of euthanasia for cats and dogs in their local community.

The organization focuses on spay and neuter services for companion animals and free roaming cats. Their education programs and adoption opportunities raise awareness for potential pet owners to be fully informed about the ways and means in properly taking care of their animals. They also help neighborhoods and low income communities deal with the high percentage of animals in shelter systems by providing free vaccination services and TNR.

Francesca stresses the importance of forging community partnerships with TNR organizations. By teaming up with them, the organizations coordinate with trappers who are going out in the community and identifying cats that need their services.

This organization was founded as a way to save animals’ lives. I’m really proud of the veterinary staff that we have here on the ground. Making sure that you have a dedicated and experienced team is the core for every successful organization.” - Francesca Fulcinity.

16 Mar 2022Pawareness Podcast # 69 | The PET Act | Senator Scott Wiener of California00:20:02

In this special episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we are honored to welcome Senator Scott Wiener of the California State Senate. Sen. Scott represents District 11, which covers the scope of San Francisco and its southern areas, as well as Broadmoor, Colma and Daly City. In his work as a government official, Sen. Scott has advocated for solutions to address housing problems, mental health issues and food security. He champions the LGBTQ+ and civil rights. Among these advocacies, he also campaigns for animal rights and welfare.

This year, Sen. Scott reintroduces the Senate Bill 879, also known as the Prohibiting Extraneous Testing (PET) Act. The bill will put an end to activities that involve testing household animals such as cats and dogs to determine the effectiveness of chemical-induced products. Some of these products include pesticides, food additives, and medications.

Sen. Scott also explains how San Francisco has been partnering with the humane society to address animal issues in their community. By phasing out pet stores that sell pets and closing down puppy mills, the government encourages people to adopt rescues from shelters. Providing homes for animals in need of care is one of the priorities in San Francisco.

Sen. Scott also encourages communities to collaborate with local advocacy organizations to campaign for certain legislations that need to be implemented in their locality. He points out that people’s engagements matter during a bill’s legislation process and a certain bill would have more possibility of being passed once people express their support for it.

When people call their representatives and register their support or opposition to a particular piece of legislation, that has an impact.” - Sen. Scott Wiener

Tune in to find out how you can express support or opposition to your local government when it comes to the policies involving animal rights and welfare!

15 Dec 2021Pawareness Podcast # 60 | Cafe for Homeless Cats | Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center00:16:44

In this episode, we welcome Nikki Ruhl, founder of the Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center. Based in Camarillo, California, Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center aims to provide forever homes and loving families to stray and homeless cats in their community. As a cafe, their coffee drinks and treats complement their homely ambience where cats are sheltered.

As a veterinary technician, Nikki splits her time between managing the cafe and helping animals get medicated in animal clinics. Her passion in helping cats has inspired her to start this cafe. She explains that addressing cat euthanasia is one of the issues that the cafe aims to resolve. Today, Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center works with non-profit organizations that go into shelters to pull adoptable cats. The non-profit organizations will then find homes for the cats. The cafe provides a temporary home for at least 15 of these cats that remain unadopted until they find suitable owners for them.

“Black cats don’t really get adopted often. We try to get rid of that stigma.” - Nikki Ruhl

19 Nov 2020Pawareness Podcast # 12 │ Dr. Crocker Pet Vet00:29:12

On this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, I welcome Dr. Tannetje Crocker, a Pet Vet based in Texas that works with animals of all sorts. Join us as we discuss what it means to properly medicate pets, a few reasons why a pet owner may not be able to medicate their own animal, along with solutions for this troubling issue. Dr. Crocker details how she copes with the emotions and heaviness that comes with being a veterinarian, including having a support system and a consistent gratitude practice. We touch on the importance of communication with your veterinarian, the frequency in which you should bring your pet in for a check-up, as well as why the Southern US states ship out more pets than Northern states.

“With covid, the shelters have been really clearing out a lot because everyone’s getting pets… which is great, but it’s also hard because covid’s not allowing people to socialize their pets and so we’re seeing some more behavioral issues and things like that that we wouldn’t normally see when people adopt new pets.” - Dr. Tannetje Crocker

Tune in to learn Dr. Crocker’s powerful recommendations for pet owners, including the value of pet insurance and quickly addressing behavioral issues with training, as well as valuable advice for existing and aspiring veterinarians.

15 Sep 2021Pawareness Podcast # 47 | Rescuing Animals by Plane | Pet Rescue Pilots00:30:36

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Julian Javor, Founder of Pet Rescue Pilots. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Pet Rescue Pilots pursues the mission to provide animals from overcrowded kill shelters in California with suitable homes and loving families. By flying them across the west coast of the United States and Canada, they give hope to animals by sending them to rescue groups, foster homes, and a safer environment to live in.

Julian shares how he finds his purpose in helping animals and special needs dogs by using his aviation education. After discovering what most rescues and shelters lack, which usually involves transportation in relocating their animals to their forever homes, Julian realizes that he can help address this problem by volunteering with his aviation skills. He also participates in local government efforts to improve the lives of pets and support animal welfare and encourage officials to further address the recurring problems that the animal community faces, such as euthanasia.

By establishing a network of rescues and building their partnerships, Pet Rescue Pilots continues its mission to help animals that are in need of loving families. Whether or not their potential adopters are located in different states, the organization makes it possible for these animals to become united with people who are committed to taking good care of them and giving them the best lives that they deserve.

“There are so many people who don’t even know that a million cats and dogs are being euthanized all over the country annually. That’s not making good on our part of the deal. We didn’t domesticate them so they could be born to be killed. We just need everybody’s cooperation to do the right thing.” - Julian Javor

22 Sep 2021Pawareness Podcast # 48 | What is a No-Kill Philosophy? | Ulster County SPCA00:27:41

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Gina Carbonari. Gina is the Executive Director of the Ulster County SPCA, a private non-profit organization based in Kingston, New York that aims to reduce animal cruelty and provide shelters for animals in need.

Gina shares the programs that the organization is currently handling to fulfill their mission. These include temporary homes for the dogs, cats, and other animals that they take in, adoptions to connect them with the right loving families, community assistance to make sure that pets stay in their homes, a food pantry,  and low cost veterinary services. Ulster County SPCA is the only organization within their community that carries out humane law enforcement and addresses complaints about animal abuse cases. They also host the Artists for Animals program where they feature an artist’s works every month  on their website and Facebook page and raise funds to support their organization.

Gina also shares the common issues related to animals in their community. Overpopulation is one that they seek to address by providing spay/neuter services. Serving the county for 130 years, they continue to pursue their mission by educating the community about pet ownership and enforcing laws that protect animals.

“Each organization should have their own no-kill philosophy because there’s a lot of nuance to the definition of ‘no-kill’. For us, we find it to be very important to have that philosophy and put it in writing so that it’s there for everybody to see and understand.” - Gina Carbonari
