Excellent, intelligent, perfectionist, extraordinary are some of the words that you may be using to describe someone with higher ability. 05 May 2022Ep#35 Inspiring Mom - Dr. Jai - Marathon Runner@4500:15:23

Being brought up amongst boys, I was always involved in fights, cricket, running around. I never always felt any different from them . I don’t believe in genderization and my motivation to be physically strong roots from it.  Today, even after having two daughters; feeling good about my body, being in shape and having the freedom to wear short dresses without feeling the cringe keeps me motivated.

Now, at the age of 45, I run full marathons and am happy that even my daughters are into sports and doing gymnastics at the national level.

08 May 2022Ep#36 Inspiring Mom: Dr. Aditi-UpCycling,Quilling and Crochet Artist00:24:10

I had an inclination towards Art and Craft from a young age. Creating something with my own hand is food for my soul’.  Initially I created things purely for my pleasure, but soon I realized that any form of art needs a platform and this gave birth to  Bhule Bisre (things made from recycled material) and Paper Scissors Rock - quilling and crochet.

My creativity is my expression, something which I would like to put out to the world and not merely for appreciation and money. This thought runs in my family and we believe that there is so much more to a person than just his / her profession.

Now I am looking forward to learning knitting from my son, who has it as a part of his School curriculum.

21 Jan 2021Ep#1 Picky Eaters? Tips For Handling Them00:15:50

Feeding kids can be a big challenge if your little ones are fussy eaters. Both Himani and Kalyani have raised picky eaters and in this episode they share their experiences, ideas and parenting tips for developing healthy eating habits and to take the stress out of the whole process.

Episode Highlights:

  1. Giving Control - Involving children in the whole process of cooking itself. Right from grocery shopping, cleaning to cooking. The kids feel empowered by being a part of it. Interesting conversations like 'Where , how and in which season is this fruit grown? ', 'Is this a leafy vegetable or root vegetable?' not only get them interested in food but also helps in holistic development. Their rejection levels go down. The most interesting way to get them involved in cooking is setting yogurt. They find the whole process magical and super engaging.
  2. Gadget Free family dinner - Putting all the screens away and  letting the kids see what and how much mommy daddy are enjoying food, makes a huge impact on them. Children start expressing their likes and dislikes in a more detailed manner rather than only saying - 'I don't like this'.  Going back to our roots and sitting on the floor with cross legs is also recommended. It is scientifically a better posture and helps us clean up faster.
  3. Peer Pressure:  Letting the kids eat together with their friends helps them try out new tastes. Let the children carry their dinner plates to their friend's place and eat together. They will influence each other and many a times its much more effective than us parents pushing them to try.
  4. Replacement Foods: Sometimes even after of trying various feeding methods, kids continue to reject particular foods. Replacing them with different foods made with similar ingredients helps. For example; if the child does not like milk, trying cheese or yogurt is important. Similar kind of nutrition goes in the body and most of the times its better than stressing out too much over it.
  5. Listening to our body: Help the children understand their hunger clues. Feeding while having the TV or other distractions around hampers the process of listening to our body clues. Children dont understand when they are full or how the food tasted.
  6. Carrot and Stick Approach: Though carrot is the most popular approach, it might backfire. Reward can become their only motivation to not only eat but it extends to other fields a well. So use it sparingly! Stick approach might lead to the child associating 'pressure' with the act of eating itself. So parents might feel that the child is rejecting food, but he might be avoiding the pressure associated with it.

Insight of the Day: Using food and a mood maker / escape mechanism - Whenever the children are upset and crying, parents run to chocolates/ or their favorite treats to help them calm down. But the children must be taught how to deal with their emotions first. Running to food to overcome harsh times might become a habit and lead to obesity in the future.
Fun Tip of the Day: Boring Substitutes - If your child is rejecting his meal, just calmly offer boring options like say salad or yogurt. The child will weigh the options and atleast try his own meal! Tricky Moms :-)

24 Mar 2021Ep#5 Meaningful Birthday Parties00:22:50

Can birthdays be the birth of new thoughts, new experiences...and not only about throwing a perfect party..

In this episode we will focus on the various elements which can make the celebration special in many ways for both, the kids and the parents.

  • Having a Birthday Ritual - a special family bonding time
  • Meaningful - Associating birthdays with the act of giving
  • Mindful - environment friendly
  • Enjoyment - education + entertainment and ofcourse the party planning part as well, to make them more healthy and pocket friendly

The first step in planning should be to think what the child really enjoys..Is it food, decor, visitors, gifts, surprises, games or something else? What will make him/her feel really special and loved?  There is a fun way to do this…   Last year a friend suggested this  trick... she calls it- ‘The Magic lamp.. trick.’  and i tried it ... it worked so well… more than a month before Ahana’s birthday our countdown began. I just handed over a small toy lamp to Ahana and told her to make 3 wishes for her birthday.

So, for her party she had told me  - she wants a 2 tier rainbow cake and wants to call all her friends and have face painting. So I was relieved , if these 3 things are taken care, the food and decor and other things were planned as per my convenience…

Healthy party food ideas by Shraddha Fogla

  • Tofu
  • Corn on the cob
  • Sweet potato fries
  • Edamame seeds
  • Crispy Kale
  • Guacamole with organic crackers
  • Cheese boards - with natural cheese
  • Pasta or pizza with whole meal options and natural cheese. All the veggies can be washed and cut a day before.

How to choose a healthier cake - By Ekta - Factory made cakes include chemicals, preservatives and stabilizers for increasing the shelf life. Home made cakes are fresh and can be made with organic ingredients and completely devoid of any harmful chemicals.

Budget friendly party hacks - By Rakhi Chandra

  • Plan ahead and order everything from online party stores
  • Cake hack - Get simple store bought cake and decorate it yourself with plastic toys, chocolates, cookies or candies. This saves upto 60% of your cost if compared to a customized cake.
  • We can use online free printables and just wrap them around store bought chocolate bars to give a personalized look

Entertainment:
Adding a bit of education to the activities is fun,  engaging and meaningful at the same time..and there are so many awesome ideas online… my 2 favorite ones are

  1. All the baking soda experiments - watching the fizz is so much fun for all age groups! And its not only volcanos, there are many more interesting options available
  2. Rainbow science experiments - with prisms or food colouring..

Oh yes.. There are tons of options - sink and float activities, giant soap bubbles..the options are endless.

We can also look at these parties as opportunities to help our kids get bolder, by encouraging them to perform a song or dance, put up a small magic show.

Eco Friendly Aspect:

  • Reuse is the key e.g. Name the plates to ensure every guest uses just one plate throughout the party
  • Avoid plastics, thermocol as much as possible.
  • Look for Compostable products for your décor. If we put in a little extra effort, we can come up with many eco friendly ideas.

Fun Tip of the Day: The Gift Registry

Our next episode will deal with Sensitivity and Emotional Challenges amongst children. It will be released on 8th April.

06 Oct 2021Ep#20 Parenting through Covid 1900:36:47

Last 2 years have been full of experiences and a very enriching emotional journey for all of us.

No doubt we have been through ups and downs, sometimes extreme and sometimes manageable but like always we are told to take the positives and not to focus of the negatives!

Today's episode is our attempt to do the same and feel good about the experiences we had.

We are in conversation with Dr. Tina Mistry from Birmingham, UK. Tina is a clinical psychologist, a podcast host, a writer and a speaker on south Asian mental health issues.

Some highlights of this episode are

  • Social distancing got families closer
  • Mental health > physical health
  • Pandemic gave us more quality time with our children
  • It was easier to achieve couple and family goals
  • Great opportunity for self reflection as everything slowed down
  • We need to make kids understand that there is uncertainty in the world and prepare them for it rather than just protecting them.
