26 Mar 2022Queen of Internet Safety for KIDS... DOWNUNDER00:46:52

How is the internet and phones affecting our children's mental health? Their Safety? Their physical health?

Jen Hoey, Founder of NOTMYKIDEVER,  https://www.notmykid.com.au and I discuss what it too much tech and how schools need to address safety measures now. Kids can have their pictures taken at school from school laptops and from other peoples cameras. They are distracted by tech, can't concentrate, control, communicate, connect with what they are required to do at school. Students are not in the "Student Mindset at school anymore, they are only half there".
Are we equipping them with the right skills in today's classroom?

This episode will help schools and families make some hard decisions.
Thanks Jen, we support you.....

Jen is  a Cyber Safety Parent Consultant and Parent Awareness Advocate.  She is founder of ‘Not My Kid' and manages the ‘Not My Kid’ Facebook parent support group which provides resources for parents with a focus on empowering them to keep their kids safe online.

Jen’s passion in this space stems from personal experience following her daughters contact with a predator via an online game.  Jen has since gone public, with her daughters consent, and the story ‘A Regular Story that Rarely Gets Told’ is available on Amazon or via her website.

As well as running, ‘Not My Kid’, Jen has been managing her husband's psychiatric practice for over a decade.  She has noted in recent years an alarming increasing in teens seeking help for mental health issues, some of which is directly related to gaming and social media use.

Jen has a particular interest in the prevention of online child exploitation and is currently studying for a Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice .

26 May 2022The Schilling APP, let's help kids manage their MONEY00:20:51

Meet Taban Yolo, is helping kids to learn how to manage their money and earn it.

He created the Schilling APP.
Taban Yolo, is the co-founder and CEO of Shilling. He spearheaded the idea to make an app that turns your screen time into profitable investments. Let’s listen to the story of this savvy industry expert in today’s show and learn a thing or two about his useful app.

It is a unique investment.

WORDS FROM TABAN
The concept of Shilling is pretty simple. We get the time someone’s spending on their phone and let them just convert that by setting parameters by how much they’ll spend on their phone, how much time they think they’ll spend on their phone, and then just connect that to a Shilling account that’s built through a financial portfolio that they could start investing in. What that means is, if you sign up for the Shilling app, you set up your profile, you’ll set your time interval. If you set it at eight hours, every eight hours of screen time that you hit, you’ll be able to make automatic investment into a Shilling portfolio based off your risk tolerance.

13 Oct 2022"The Bullied Brain Can be Healed" Dr. Jennifer Fraser00:52:52

Jennifer is an award-winning educator and best-selling author. She was pulled into a crisis at a school where teachers were bullying students. Her new book, "The Bullied Brain" looks at the science of what all forms of bullying and abuse do to brains.

She learned brain scans show that bullying and abuse do visible damage to the brain.

https://www.bulliedbrain.com/

Even more important, she discovered that our brains are adept at repair and restoration.

We can prevent bullying and we can stop bullying it takes spending time with your kids unplugged. They need to play outside and experience decision making through interaction. When we increase tech we must increase mental skills.

Educating children about their brains is one strategy and the good news is that the brain can recover after being bullied. Dr. Fraser

What is happening to our kids, they are obsessed with social media and can't get off it? They come home, eat and start scrolling, they don't even talk to their parents, siblings or pet their dogs... Even our pets are happy to see us and people are too addicted  with their head in their own phones as parents to notice.

Kate Duffy is the founder of Don't Press Send. By the way,

You school can have her in to do presentations and workshops.

We need to educate kids and parents about how tech is changing behaviour and academic performance. Education is collapsing for many reasons for phones is the most detrimental factor in how are children are learning and developing their psychological processing. 11 Oct 2020Why we should live life with less phones because we are in TROUBLE!!!00:48:20

In this very serious discussion that both, Dr. Nancy Colier, Author, Psychotherapist, Reverend and I were scared to have but we did anyways because it needed to be done.
Phones are the kryptonite to learning in many ways academically, emotionally, socially and debilitating the way we can't be present with ourselves.
Parents, this is an episode you can't miss. We discuss how children are not learning to tackle hard to do challenges or problem solving their way through them, now, they are shutting down.
Here are Dr. Coliers's strategies to make sure children don't disappear. She says we will see children become moodier, less patient, can't handle feedback, can't socialize and children are not keeping up with linguistic standards. Kids are falling behind parents because they are on technology for extended periods.
We share the harsh reality of Social Media and effects on our children.
We discuss the value system of families and why we shouldn't be bumping into one another at the charging station in our homes, but being an actual family.
She talks about several tips to help children with their phone addiction and it ultimately comes back to the parents phone use.

10 Nov 2020"How to work with defiant or violent children" with Megg, from MeggThompsonBehaviour00:32:17

Megg has been working with violent and combative children for a long time. Her education and background has helped guide her to work with children who didn't fit in a box.
She give parents and teachers strategies to prevent and defuse. Most children are not violent and only need more love and security to ironically decrease the violent, aggressive behaviour.
Are suspensions productive anymore?  Well, no. Heavy parent involvement  and projects are more valuable to remedy unwanted behaviour than suspensions.
Most teachers with 20 years or more experience have not seen a violent child, now,  this is yearly.
Megg is a behavioural consultant.

Talking with your partner about the values you want to instill in your children and how you are going to role model that in front of them is a good start.    Neuroscience says, children are more impulsive and can't regulate or control themselves  and can't make a decisions moral when on their phones.

TOPICS WE DISCUSS:

  • Younger children have shorter processing windows and therefore can 't make sound decisions quickly online.
  • The NEW WORD OF 2021 is STIMULATION for our generation, it dangerous to our mental health.
  • Normal naked jokes, body jokes and fart jokes are normal to children after various stages of development. Also, exploration for children is a must and finding fun things to laugh at. However, those moments where someone fell and tripped would have be talked about for a day and now it is filmed and permanent in print.
  • What is worrisome to Dr.Sharma is repeated behaviour like fun, natural episodes that are sensationalized are now forever in a photo or video, for all to see 24-7.
  • How can we educate children about their bodies to avoid them developing body image issues?
  • Concerns about children seeking other peer approval instead of a parents is very concerning.
  • Parents help your child become aware of peer pressure, but control that peer pressure and by helping your children feel a sense of belonging.
  • Parents can teach their right from right and wrong to be a  good person. We need teach them how to control the phone. Our kids are not equipped to control or regulate themselves on a phone as yet.

02 Apr 2021Hanging with Midlifeclub Ladies!! Chattering about teens and all those phone issues.00:33:24

 Donna Schori & Jeanette Keene

Donna and Jeanette created their podcast, Midlifeclub while they were out on a beach with a couple of friends. They were talking about what they each were going through at this point in their lives with having teenagers, what was happening with their own bodies and realizing that there was a huge shift coming at their point and time, midlife. They jokingly said they should start a podcast and then decided why not! They felt like they still had a lot to learn going forward and thought they could help other women relate to the fact that they aren't alone when it comes to life events. Midlife can be a challenge so their goal was to ask the questions women want to know the answers to and learn together.

Our podcast did have a specific topic though: Why are teens so addicted to their phones and how can we have our kids back?

22 Apr 2021Are parenting styles affecting academic achievement?00:43:42

Punam and I talk about why student achievement has declined and is there a link to parenting styles or technology or both?  We define the new parenting style- "The SERVICING OUT PARENT" and how it is impacting a child's psychological development. Has parenting changed in the last 20 years or has our expectations? Listen in and buy her book, "PARENT POWER".

Punam V. Saxena holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Education. Throughout her 30 years of experience between teaching and advocacy in her children’s schools, she implemented several procedures that have benefited the students and administrators within the school district.

Punam is a Parent Impact Coach, speaker, podcast host of edu-Me, and now a published author. Her work focuses on bridging the gap to fostering a stronger relationship between parents and schools by empowering parents to become partners in their child’s education.

07 May 2021THE SUGAR RUSH is hurting athletes and us.00:33:00

Canadian children are eating 4 times the amount of sugar they should and so are adults.  Are we eating the right foods? Are foods from the box good for us?  Guess what I learned, sugar creates a food addiction cycle.
How is extended phone use and binge watching affecting our diets? Is technology making us fat? In short, yes! Have a listen and when you learn what you really eating watch the weight come off. I lost 15 lbs in 4 months.

Clarissa talks about the statistics about how much sugar and processed food we are eating. What can we do to eliminate sugar intake and how can we help our athletes perform.

  • Clarissa has worked in the addiction and mental health fields for the past 12 years and enjoys a reputation as being a skillful clinician yet “down-to-earth” with common-sense solutions to problems that occur when clients are struggling with food addiction recovery issues.
  • Clarissa founded Reinvent Your Bliss Point (https://foodaddictionhelp.ca) in 2018 where she works with individuals based on a holistic approach to healing and maintaining recovery.
  • She has a passion for empowering and supporting individuals, coupled with her commitment to education and best practice, provides clients with a strong, supportive foundation to assist in navigating challenging times for them and loved ones.
  • She encourages and monitors each client’s progress by assisting them in establishing short-term and long-term goals towards achieving sustainable and rewarding recovery. Her empathetic regard for each individual’s unique challenges and strengths fuels her commitment to helping people on their path to healing from food and the behavioural and emotional health issues that are attached to that.
  • Clarissa hopes to bridge the gap between the Eating Disorder World and the Food Addiction as she struggled for over 19 years with eating disorder behaviour: anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and finally found recovery in abstinence from her drug foods as her solution.
  • She now has a freedom with real food that she never believed was possible. She works with others to help them find this freedom too. She hopes to create real change in the awareness of the disease of Food Addiction and is co-host along with Dr. Vera Tarman and Molly Painschab of the podcast Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction which launched this year https://apple.co/2XQUTXn

Karen Wagnon, from Parenting By Design helps me to explain why kids behave the way they do and they we must seek the root to their issues.
Karen has great tips for discipline and ideas.

"When you put your laundry away you can go to the school with your friends"

I speak to TIPS to prevent unwanted behaviour by keeping routines, talking but add specific TIPS to BALANCE SCREENS.
Karen is a delight and she works parents on a daily basis.

Teach kids make sure they understand and then if they make mistakes, then discipline do not punishment.

04 Jun 2021Who is FEEDING OLIVE?00:21:32

I know I focus on older children but new research is suggesting that toddlers need more motor skills and socialization than 10 years ago.
Meet Samantha and Olive, from "FEEDING OLIVE". Samantha started out in advertising, moved into yoga teaching and now is the Mama to Olive Her husband and her are raising Olive on a plant based diet. I see what they make and I can't wait to taste a few of the recipes.

This cute 'little bean' as my daughter calls little kids, can measure food, bake, cook, stack and arrange flowers and she isn't even two.

Learn why Samantha is raising Olive without screens. It is all about movement and talking..... The fundamentals of development.

My son met Olive and soon, we are all going to bake, I can't wait to see how this is going to work out.

18 Jun 2021Assertive Parents Raise More Confident KIDDOS.00:39:28

Dr. Paulette Dale, is the author of, "Did You Say Something Susan?".

She is talking about her book and how it is educating parents to be assertive. Assertive parenting is not unhealthy parents. In fact, psychologists say that being assertive just keeps the balance of expectations and teaches us how to ask for things in a respectful manner.  If we are kind about being assertive it is a life skill.

Her background as a Professor in Communications she felt she wanted to help women learn to say how they felt, be honest not be kind. I personally have felt, that I have struggled with this. I am direct and kind but many feel that is aggressive.

I enjoyed learning that I was on the right track. If my children see me being assertive and kind they will learn it from be and be a much confident adult....

This is a real conversation that all parents should hear.

24 Jun 2021TEEN SEX TALK WITH Michal Greenberg Cohen00:33:11

Teens are more addicted to pornography now, than ever in our history. The reported 1-11 girls stated experiencing violence while dating in this past year and 1-14 boys said the same thing.
What is happening? Why are they watching porn when they can have real intimacy?
Why are teens spending more time on watching videos than out exploring and dating.

Should we be talking about sex earlier as 8 year olds are sexting and sending nude photos?

Michal Greenberg Cohen is a Sex Educator who talks with parents about when and how to start these convos. But here is the good news, the more we talk to our kids in a dialogue the more confident and prepared they will be when faced with these decisions. We are them to have healthy adult relationships and this is where it starts.

07 Jul 2021Are Participation Ribbons Enough to Keep Kids in Sports?00:33:21

Jens and I discuss a hot topic. Yes, ribbons can help many kids stay in sports but for how long?
When kids are told just show up, you don't have to listen, you don't have to try, you don't have to learn anything, what is this teaching our kids?
What are ribbons really doing for their motivation?
I can remember being conflicted myself by them. So, if I don't try I get one and a trophy but I want to win. So do the kids that want to stay in the sport motivate them?
What about the kids who are intrinsically motivated.?

We discuss where this goes... and when we have guests on we ask them about the ribbons...... you should hear their attempts at diplomatic answers.

What a remarkable story, when we agreed to the this podcast, I had no clue what Brady had endured. I know about hazing, rookie invitations but the tryout bull was abusive.

03 Sep 2021How Social Media affects Athletes!00:35:00

Podcast with Media Savvy Moms-
Marilyn Davis and I sit down to  discuss how social media is impacting our children's body images.
How do athletes misuse social media? How is SNAPCHAT hurting athletes after games.?
These new methods in which children "talk and text" on are causing children to become anxious, depressed and suicidal. It is apparent that children need more mental skills, emotional development and many kids are not forming the bond of security of attachment which is directly harming their relationships and causing unwanted behaviour.

13 Sep 2021Bullying in a High School Classroom.00:51:20

I am speaking with an amazing high school teacher from, Ontario about the types of bullying she is seeing in the schools, how she sets strategies to reduce bullying in her classroom and is starts with  expectations for her students. Bullying in person and online  occurs more now than ever before. Our schools are at their capacities with mental health, combative behaviour, poor attendance and high late arrivals, but is it education changing its expectations of students or parents or both. Changes need to happen now not in a few years from now.  The kids can't wait that long. Michele shares her insights and her fab method of connection in her classroom.

  • We chat about teen culture and why offering a nurturing environment always wins.
  • Teachers do their best in their schools but phones are making it increasingly difficult to connect with students or help them to connect or communicate with one another and focus on their number one job, their school work.
  • What are the signs of Bullying and Cyberbullying? Here is a great article about the signs and symptoms on Iparentgen.com
  • https://iparentgen.com/topics/bullying/cyberbullying-during-covid/

Are you educating your children about cyberbullying and bullying?

Thank you to all of the teachers who are going into battle with teens. It is becoming extremely challenging to teach students when they are not sleeping, constantly on a phone and not taught  the mental skills they need to be SELF AWARE and confident.

13 Sep 2021Why is a Pinwheel phone better for your kids?00:38:31

Isaiah, is the COO of, Pinwheel PHONES is on the, "THE PARENT TALK"  today to  share a new gift to all parents that will help prevent mental health and early phone addiction.

Why are these phones better for kids than a Smart Phone?  Pinwheels safety features are designed to help our children learn to use a phone slowly and over time. This gives  adults a chance to teach them  how to conduct themselves on a phone and how to balance them in their lives.

Introducing phones is a slippery slope especially with a Smartphone. There is a much greater chance of phone addiction, eating disorders, anxiety, depression linked to a smart phone as they have more accessibility to more right away.  They see more videos, photos and use SnapChat. If kids use a Pinwheel instead, parents can set up the phone with their friends numbers so they know who they are talking to. Snapchat must be loaded on. There are also many more secure features designs and no apps. Having Text and Talk is safer.
We discuss why parents want their kids to have a phone and the issues that surround this new  venture.
We discuss the many concerns about the right age to start on a phone and why no phone is still healthier for them until they have more cognitively and psychologically developed, SELF AWARENESS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IS. A MUST.

09 Oct 2021HARRY IS BEING RAISED with MINECRAFT00:44:57

ARTICLE ON DOUG DEVITRE, FATHER OF HARRY.

My son Harry, and his business, have been selected by ITEN, the Innovation Technology and Entrepreneurial Network in St. Louis to participate in the Eureka Experience, a 12-month virtual business accelerator alongside Lindenwood University. While it might seem awkward that a six-year-old in first grade would be participating in a college-level program, you need to know this is not your everyday lemonade stand.

In order to start a sustainable business, you need to be passionate about what you do and have a support system to help you navigate the perils of entrepreneurship. Otherwise, one swift blow from out of nowhere can easily take you out of the game. If you ask Harry about his passion. It’s Minecraft. YouTube. Teaching others. That’s when he is smiling the most. That’s all he thinks about. This is a recipe for a successful entrepreneur.

Schools do their best. I applaud the teachers who sacrifice hours behind the scenes and have to deal with unreasonable parents too. My Mom was a retired school teacher from Riverview Gardens and witnessed her stress first-hand. However, schools are unequipped today despite their best intentions. Each is using outdated systems, reinforcing outdated policies, and teaching outdated methods that are not meeting the students’ each own’s preferred learning style. Instead of focusing on the problem, I have chosen to provide Harry with a homeschooling opportunity of a lifetime by being his teacher, mentor, coach, and connector. This is where it continues and I’m excited to share the benefits of taking a homeschool approach regardless if your kids go to a public, private, or charter school.

10 Benefits of Homeschooling

You don’t own your homework until it’s part of your business.

Each drawing. Each writing journal. Each math assignment you have ever done in school might have reinforced a learning objective. However, your assignment has either been thrown away or buried a box somewhere you only see again until you move.

When you start a business as part of your homeschooling plan, you make each assignment a contribution to your business as simple as it may be. If Harry is six now, he will have complied 12 years of assignments together into one business by the time he graduates high school.

Instead of going to camp, he will be teaching camp.

Instead of obtaining certifications, he will be teaching his own

15 Oct 2021Are children with Learning Disabilities more vulnerable online?00:37:05

The absolutely adorable Dr. Mayava Clark has started an app and online school for kids to learn how to behave online and learn how protect themselves.

Phones for all children are exposing them to pedophiles, rude behaviour, pornography and images that are simply too complex for the level of psychological development. We go back to the same math problem, if parents are on their phones 4-5 hours a day and kids are on their phones or devices 4-8 hours a day, when are families bonding, talking teaching and playing?

That is 160hrs/month, 1800 hours/ year NOT learning the following:

  • Learning social skills
  • Learning self awareness or EI
  • Learning SELF TALk
  • Experiencing social situations
  • Exercising, playing and learning vital skills to be teachable, coachable, employable.
  • These skills are now more important than academic skills

Dr. Clark shares her story about her son and how she solved her concerns and what strategies she used to educate and protect her son. Here is her website: Www.Casenllc.com.https://casenllc.com
What an amazing journey and story with an outstanding product and centre for kids she has started.

22 Jan 2022Child Exploitation Educator, Rosie Cataldo. KNOW THE FACTS00:34:02

It is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and we need it. It is open season on children if they have a phone that is not monitored with  a control app installed on. Children increase their exposure to predators by having access to social media.
Educating children about Social MEDIA PROTECTION is crucial for their whole lives.

Rosie Cataldo is from Minneapolis, she shares her stories andhttps://www.victorpacini.com/spotlight-rosie-cataldos-mission/ educational expertise on Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking. Children are more vulnerable today than every before...... because of the simple math. They are on their phones at younger ages and for  longer amounts of a time, it is increases their chances to being approached.

Kids are now online without parents knowing what they are doing or saying. Snapchat being one o the hottest criminal spots today. If you want to buy drugs, it is there, if you want a hook up, it is there, if you want prey on kids it is there, if you want to traffic kids you can.
School administrators and teachers are spending more time with Snapchat and cyberbullying  issues than teaching they say. Even Child Exploitation issues are happening on school property. Is it time to revisit the safety and habits our children are allowed on School property.

Lisa offered, "It has been incredible to see how congressmen from both sides of the aisle, therapists, parents, internet safety experts ( like Donna Rice Hughes), academic scholars ( Warren Binford) and anti-porn activists (Gary Wilson) have rallied around us and endorsed our work."

At the beginning of this year, we launched our  501 c(3) nonprofit, Wired Human, wiredhuman.org. You will also find a number of podcasts we have done on the website.

We have made it our mission to equip youth to be the first line of defense against digital exploitation and support parents, teachers and community leaders with the tools to mentor this upcoming generation through digital challenges. This upcoming year, we will be a little more focused on advocacy and policy changing initiatives.

This is an interview theyhttps://www.wiredhuman.org did with NCOSE we did a while back, if you would like to find out more about us:
