10 May 2022013 Interview With Artist Alicia Cornwell and How To Find Success With Online Art Marketplaces00:37:49

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we bring you another interview! With Laura overseas, Ros takes the reins and chats with award-winning fine artist Alicia Cornwell from Victoria Australia. Ros and Alicia met in person at the Art To Art Unearthed Art Prize exhibition in 2022 and hit it off right away. What stood out about Alicia was her openness, her kindness and her obvious passion for community.

In this episode, we get to know Alicia, her background and how she has flourished as an award-winning fine artist. From art school to corporate banking, a vintage trading business to her beautiful fine art career, Alicia’s journey is similar to so many other creatives. Innately creative, right throughout her journey, she knew there was something missing.

She touches on the importance of each and every part of her life journey, stating that “everything we do builds up to this point in time.” Alicia shares that receiving life coaching from Sarah Riley Coaching was key to gaining as much success as she has to date.

We unpack the realities of the art prize application process from coping with rejection and choosing art prizes that suit your work; and we hone in on online art marketplaces such as Art Lovers Australia and BlueThumb and how to get onto those marketplaces and make them work for you.

We hope that you enjoy the show!

19 Jul 2022018 Powerful Goal Setting For Artists And Those In Art Business00:29:25

This episode is all about goal setting for artists, makers and artpreneurs! Laura shares that she is exploring “Profit First” - a book by Mike Michalowicz which sets out a cash management system for entrepreneurs.

Ros shares a new quarterly planning approach she is trying, inspired by a business mentor Tash Corbin.

This is how it works:

  1. Do a brain dump of all your ideas and what you want to achieve in the quarter. These can be in all areas of your life including health, family etc.
  2. Then look at your list and determine which of those items are goal (rather than actions). Goals are the ones that have a number related to them. E.g. Create 6 artworks, make 10 sales etc.
  3. Hone your goals to a list of 3 only.
  4. List out 9-10 total actions that relate to your goal list. You can choose items from your original brain dump list. Or you may realise that some of the items in your original list are not going to help with your goals, so you can leave them aside for another day.

Grab the workbook to help you to apply this planning! You can do this at any time throughout the year. https://laurajaneday.com/resources

Laura chats about the importance of having a focus for your creative energy and setting yourself up with realistic goals. By channeling your energy and creativity into specific activities as set out in your plan, will help you to achieve your goals.

We also touch on some tips for overachievers and also those who have to nurture their energy levels.

DM us to let us know what your 3 goals are for the quarter!

04 Jul 2023043 How Astrology Influences Your Destiny As An Artist with Robyn Saurine00:39:44

This fortnight, we bring you a really different interview episode with business and astrology coach Robyn Saurine. Taking a multi-faceted approach to business, she describes what she does as a human potential expert, performance and visual artist as well as a yoga teacher and studio owner.

In this episode we talk about how you can use astrology as a guide for your creative business as well as understanding your personality as an artist  .

Robyn gives a very detailed overview of how you can start using this system for yourself as an artist.  We would highly advise getting out a pen and paper so you can take some notes for this information packed episode! We also have some links in the show notes to a specific website that Robyn mentions, which can help you to generate your very own astrological chart.

She describes the simplest way to start out is by identifying the element you are - eg: air, fire, water or earth. This will give you information on how you work as a person and inform aspects of your creative business. If you are looking for a more tailored approach Robyn does coaching and one on one readings online. In the session Robyn can provide specific information in regards to your chart and personality as an artist and how that can help you in your creative career.

We won't give too much more info from the episode away ….Tune in now!

23 May 2023040 The 5 Steps to Turn Your Hobby Into an Art Business00:39:36

This fortnight, Laura and I bring you a powerful and practical episode to help you step things up and build the creative life that you desire. This episode is relevant for all artists looking for growth and expansion, particularly if you are a hobby artist and want to move into the business or professional space. There is something in here for every artist.

Laura shares her belief that if you have a calling of the heart or a dream to sell your work, it is your duty to honour that on a spiritual level. It is important to set a good example for others such as children or others, so we can break the common societal belief that a creative career is difficult and one of struggle. This dream is possible. And we owe it to the world to role model this for others.

We take you through a 5-part framework for making progress in your art business.

1. The Art & The Identity: We chat about the importance of creating a volume of work, developing your style and refining your technique. This is the stage where you contemplate who you are as an artist. Laura shares a kind piece of advice, to not get lost in this learning phase and to not let perfectionism get the better of you.

2. Sharing Your Art: This part of artist-ing focuses on putting it out there and getting your art out into the world and in front of others’ eyes. This includes social media channels and email marketing too. Key mindset matters to consider here are comparison, perfectionism and imposter syndrome. If these things pop up for you, know you are ‘normal!’

3. Strategy: An essential part of art business is stepping back and looking at the big picture. Research and decide what type of art business you want to build. Also consider what income streams you might want to include in your business. Tune in to Episode 30 to learn more about how to make an income from your art.

4. Goal and Intention Setting: Knowing your big picture direction and goals and breaking them down into small goals is essential. Check out episode 18 to explore powerful goal setting for artists. What outcome do you hope to achieve by the end?

5. Tapping into Mentorship and Community: Your mentor could be someone online who you have never met. It could be someone who inspires you through podcasts or books or it could be someone completely outside of the art realm or even someone who has passed. Community is also non-negotiable. Listen to episode 7 on how to build community.

If you take only one message away from this episode, we want you to know that you can take your art to the business and professional level. If this is your calling, it is possible.

07 Jun 2022015 How To Get Back To Making Art After A Long Break00:23:22

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we are talking about getting back into your personal art practice after a long break. This topic is relevant as Laura has just spent 2 months overseas. Ros and Laura discuss how to carve out time for art-making and spending more time doing what you love to do.

Ros shared some advice with Laura and suggested to take a step back and look at your why? She shares some ideas on how to make space for your practice, especially when life gets busy. Ros mentions the book atomic habits and the concept of habit stacking - see the link in show notes below. They also touch on the topic of art challenges and taking on a daily art practice and creating consistency.

Ros suggests making an implementation statement for your new art making habit, as a promise to yourself. She also suggests making it simple, making it realistic and achievable.

Laura summarizes some takeaways from this conversation and suggestions that Ros had for her to re-establish her art practice:

  • Setting your intention and why you make art
  • Bringing yourself back to why it means so much to you
  • Writing your intention statement with a small achievable goal
  • Incorporate a 5 min practice in with your daily routine
  • Look at your calendar to see where there would be larger stretches of time for you to create
  • Find ways to make your practice a self-care ritual - either with music, a candle, incense, oils etc…
  • Accountability - verbalizing what your goals and intentions are and getting a good friend to check in with you

Ros reads out a lovely listener review at the end of the show @kath.artique on Instagram. If you would like for us to read a review please leave one for us on Apple Podcasts.

13 Sep 2022022 Interview with Money Mindset Coach Sarah Falkinder and How To Reach Your Financial Goals For Artists00:40:18

This fortnight, Laura and Ros chat with money mindset coach Sarah Falkinder and explore the complex relationship between artists and money.

Based in Ballarat NSW Australia, Sarah is an expert in all things finance and is passionate about helping others to master money so that they can create their best life. Think empowerment, purpose and simplification!

Together we deep dive into the topic, investigating a range of blocks and unhelpful scripts that hold many artists back from financial success like:

  • They don’t call them starving artists for nothing.
  • I’m not good at managing money.
  • I’m not responsible enough with money.
  • Art is a financially risky career choice
  • I’m no good at numbers.

We also chat about ways of overcoming those roadblocks and hurdles from analysing your history, your values and your money archetype. Sarah offers a free archetype survey which you can check out via the link below. Sarah talks about the importance of this holistic approach and this alignment in helping artists to achieve the right goals in an aligned way.

Sarah shares some seriously epic golden nuggets in this episode. Be sure to listen to the end where Sarah shares how knowing the money archetypes of your loved ones can improve life and relationships.

16 Mar 2022009 Is It OK To Say No To Opportunities In Your Art Career?00:29:13

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we are having a little catch up about what is going on in both Ros and Laura’s art lives. In this quite chatty episode - listen in to hear us debrief about situations that have arisen for us lately.

Laura shares about a recent decision not to follow through on an opportunity to have an open studio. Ros raises the question - why as creatives is it difficult to say no after saying yes to a project? Breaking a commitment can be hard. Laura affirms to herself and the audience that “Its okay to say that you are not going to do something” especially if it doesn't feel in alignment.

Ros shares about a recent opportunity that she was presented with to participate in an exhibition. Laura posed a question to Ros “Are you going to be able to produce the work that you want to produce with that timeline?”

It led to an interesting discussion around saying yes or no to opportunities in your art journey. Laura mentions that decisions are made with putting self care first.

Ros updated us on her successful in person workshop in her new studio space, and her recent photography branding session. Before the session with the photographer - Laura had shared tips with Ros for what to do before the photography session such as: Get a close up headshot, another photo sitting in a chair in front of her work, get all her materials and paint mixing supplies out, choosing artwork that is in your branding colours and making a pinterest board.

Ros talked about her desire to be planning for the new year as well as a topic for a future episode on : “Pricing your work” - so look out for that one! We went over valuing what you are worth and being paid fairly.

Ros shares about her art for the heart membership she has been working on a sample artwork for her monthly painting project for her members. Laura  mentions that she is taking it easy at this stage in her art business.

We hope that you enjoy the show!

08 Nov 2022026 How and Why to Enter Art Prizes and Playing the Long Game00:23:11

In conversation with Laura, Ros unpacks art prizes, why to consider it and what is involved in the entry process. She shares her journey to date and how a single art prize and her finalist position opened up opportunities.

Laura shares that art prizes are a chance to learn and grow, reflect, learn who you are as an artist and gain clarity around what you want to communicate to the world through your work. Art prizes provide artists with direction, something to work towards, a goal, something to share on socials, community and they help to add structure to your year.

There is more to art prizes than winning.

Ros and Laura chat about the mindset element of the art prize entry process and share how common it is to feel rejection and disappointment when unsuccessful in an art prize application. We suggest that you listen to Episode 12 where we interview curator Philippa Demase and discuss how curators choose work for prizes. Hint: There is more to it than just you and your work.

Laura and Ros suggest that you spend some time researching art prizes and find appropriate matches for your art, reminding you that you are looking for a prize that is a good fit for YOU as an artist. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR ART to suit an art prize.

18 Jan 2022005 Prioritising Art for Self Care00:28:19

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we are rewinding back in time to Pre-Christmas, when Ros was madly painting Christmas baubles and getting ready for the markets. Ros talks about how she is in a high energy phase in her art business by testing the market with new ideas for putting her art out into the world.

Laura taking things a little bit slower for the silly season and sitting back and re-assessing her next steps forward in her creative business. She has come to realise that for her energy to be sustainable she needs big periods of rest after completing a big project. They both discuss taking time out in your business for reflection and journalling. Ros talks about being a mother, how she doesnt “stop” and rest lives within a “dreamspace” for her in her busy life.

Laura talks about a really positive art therapy session that she recently did, and raises her desire to make more time to do art therapy for her own self care. Ros brings up scheduling time for both of their own personal art practice. Both Ros and Laura contemplate how they might prioritise time for themselves during their week to work on their own art. Ros talks about how she spends a lot of her energy and time in fostering creativity in others, because she has seen the benefits of art for herself that she is excited to share.

Laura proposes they both make a commitment of 10 mins of art with no purpose in their week - for self care, fun, play and exploration. Ros jokes about how Laura has flipped her business around and explains how this discussion has led to allowing her to “give herself permission to paint” which is what Ros shares with her students.

We hope that you enjoy the Show!

12 Apr 2022011 Fatigue, Burn Out And Tips On How To Rest As An Artist00:30:55

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we are talking about the topic of REST as an artist. Both Ros and Laura have different takes on this topic. Laura comes from the perspective of an artist with chronic illness and Ros as a mum and also a person who recharges through “active rest”.

Laura opens up about how she came to make “self care” a priority in her life, after pushing her energetic limits and ending up in hospital with a serious health flare. As an artist she now considers carefully what projects and commitments that she takes on.

They discuss the topic of sleep and how Ros as a busy mum of two little people, explains the tricky balance of managing your family's needs vs. your personal need for rest at night time. Ros poses the question to the audience - How can you get closer to the ideal amount of time of sleep that you individually need at night?

Ros talks about what Rest means to her in her life and how she takes a break away from her art life by seeing friends, visiting new places, spending time with her children - and trying to be present with them. She shares a tip for women that have a busy mind like herself, when she is intentionally carving out “family time” to have a to-do list handy so whenever ideas pop up you can jot it down for later and go back to being present for her family.

Laura shares how she prioritizes rest, by putting a reminder on her phone like “rest time” as an appointment. She shares a list of low impact activities to give listeners ideas:

Journaling, gentle walks in nature, yoga or meditation, sitting on the couch drawing in a art journal or tablet, or watercolours in a sketchbook, spending time in the garden or front porch drinking a cup of tea, calling a good friend on the phone with no agenda (no planning or organizing) just a genuine catch-up to nourish your friendship, listen to a guided meditation, relaxing in a warm bath, and if you are really feeling burnt out making time for a sleep in and to make that possible if you have kids - organizing care, either from a partner or a babysitter. Reading a chapter of a book, listening to some music, deep belly breathing and patting your pet because it releases all the feel good hormones!

Ros shares a tip to those people that may feel the excuses settling in - such as “but I can't because I have kids.” She reminds herself - ROS - you gotta do it anyway.

Laura shares how in the past she felt like a “flawed artist” because she wasn't creating in the studio every day. She would watch all of these artists on Instagram doing art challenges and felt like she couldn't keep up. She came to the realization that she is the kind of artist that needs big stretches of rest in between projects such as exhibitions.

Ros reflects that it comes back to self knowledge and knowing who you are and how you work best. Laura talks about how finding out her energetic type in Human Design as a “Projector” has helped her to manage her days and energy as an artist. Ros relates making time for rest in your weeks like - negative space in your artwork. Ros talks about self acceptance, and how it is okay that we both approach our art life differently and it is okay. Laura shares a quote from Danielle LaPorte at the end of the episode for listeners similar to her - “It takes as long as it takes” reminding you to play the long game with your art business goals.

28 Feb 2023034 Interview With Jade Warne and Why You’re Not Making Art Sales on Instagram00:51:52

If you are wondering if you should start an art account over on Instagram or if you should walk away from the platform altogether, this episode is for you! In this episode, Laura and I bring you the inspirational Jade Warne from the Small Business Growth Club.

A photographer, videographer and IG growth coach, Jade helps small business owners to make money online. At a really low cost.

Instagram can be a bug bear with the shift to favoring video content and reels, and the fact that Instagram seems to be ever-changing. Jade addresses this overwhelm and encourages artists like you to pop yourself in the driver’s seat and decide whether or not Instagram is the place for you.

If you do choose to give Instagram a go, Jade recommends using all 5 surfaces - the feed, stories, reels, DMs and lives. Like an entire world to discover, Jade suggests exploring one surface at a time. She shares that the least used surfaces are lives and also DMs, which means that they offer you the most opportunity for growth.

Intrigued? Come on over and tune in to this value-packed episode which addresses the mindset work, the hurdles to selling and why YOU are the one in control.

We hope that you enjoy the Show!

15 Feb 2022007 12 Ideas To Help You Build Your Artist Community00:35:00

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we are sharing some ideas with you for building a creative community. Laura shares how building a creative community around her has helped to keep her motivated and inspired. She discusses Julia Cameron's concept of a “Believing Mirror” - someone that recognises your gifts and reflects your strengths back to you as well as believing in your potential.

Ros raises the point of artists being sensitive and emotional, and we talk about how surrounding yourself with support really helps. That's why we thought we should share some tips on how we have built community.

Here is our list of 12 ideas to help you to build creative community:

  1. Look to local facebook groups connected to a creative community group
  2. Look for social meetups / networking events and local artists society
  3. Find a mentor in the industry (in real life or someone you look up to online)
  4. Connect with your local art gallery, regional and community spaces and small independent galleries
  5. Go to an art class in person and online
  6. Design markets and community run markets
  7. Independent boutiques and local shops
  8. Find out if your local council supports the arts - grants and commissions
  9. Facebook groups from independent artists and coaches IE: Ros’ Permission to Paint community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/permissiontopaintfreecommunity
  10.  Reach out to an artist that you admire online
  11. Look in the wellbeing space: women's gatherings, yoga and meditation classes
  12. Go within to self-nurture and support yourself with introspection and journaling

Ros also mentions that you don't have to do all of these steps and it is just a list of ideas - just to relieve a bit of pressure… We hope that these ideas can help you feel less alone on your creative journey!

We hope that you enjoy the show!

03 Jan 2023030 From Starving Artist to Making an Income from Your Art00:34:40

In this episode, Laura and I get real. We lay out the options available to you for making money out of your art and the various business models you can choose from as a modern-day artist. We debunk the idea of ‘commercial art’ being dirty and explain why you must make money to make art.

In this day and age, we have access to tools and technology that have never existed before. It is the best time in living history to be an artist and we need to take advantage of the opportunity. If we don't, it would be doing a dis-service to the artists who paved the way for us.

We share the four options put forward by well-known author Jeff Goins in his book “Real Artists Don’t Starve” - commercial art, the patronage model, self-patronage and poverty.

  1. Make commercial art where your art is a commodity which you sell to the market
  2. Engage in the traditional artist patronage model where a wealthy benefactor pays for your livelihood while you create your work
  3. Choose self-patronage where you find a way to fund your own art practice by getting a second job either in the art realm or outside of the art scene
  4. Where the artist chooses poverty and creates art from that struggle

We also dive into the various business models we have seen in the art arena so you can think about how you currently fit in or how you want to fit in:

1. Fine Art Galleries. This is a commercial model where your original work is your only product, and you work with high-end fine art galleries to sell your work. You are represented by a gallery and exclusivity is a factor. They provide you with direction and they take a commission. E.g., Australian artist Wendy Sharpe

2. Retail Galleries. This is another commercial model where you work with galleries such as Art to Art, Fenton and Fenton, Greenhouse Interiors or Jumbled Online. They show your art, stock your art, take a commission. Usually there is no exclusivity.

3. Self-Representation:

a. Shop/Gallery. You do not rely on any sort of gallery. You have your own market stall or trade show presence or retail shop. Often you turn your art into products including prints, linen, clothing. E.g., Bromley / Ken Done / Grotti Lotti.

b. Online. You do not rely on any sort of gallery. You retail your own original art, prints, products via your own website and online presence. E.g., Tahlia Stanton and Tiff Manuel.

4. Hybrid Model. This is a combination of self-representation and self-patronage where you have a job to fund your practice. E.g., Susan Nethercote - originals prints + commissions + teaching; Ange Miller - originals + teaching; Rach Jackson - originals, murals, licensing.

22 Oct 2024077 Mindful Art and Navigating Social Media Anonymously with Inky Meditations00:37:26

In this episode, Ros and Laura sit down with Anonymous Creator Inky Meditations, an artist who has captivated audiences on both TikTok and Instagram with mesmerizing, mindful ink paintings.

What began as a creative challenge has transformed into a social media sensation, with 104K followers on Instagram and an impressive 715K on TikTok. Inky Meditations' tutorial-style videos have become a source of inspiration for aspiring artists worldwide, showcasing the calming and meditative process of creating art with ink and water.

In this conversation, Inky shares the story behind their social media success, detailing how the combination of Instagram and TikTok allowed them to reach a massive audience. Despite the growing online presence, the motivation behind Inky's art has always been rooted in personal fulfillment - rather than monetary gain. 17 Jan 2023031 Interview With Tessa Bartholomew And The Transition Into Full Time Art00:35:07

This fortnight, Laura and Ros are bringing you an interview with Tessa Bartholomew who is an Intuitive Abstract Artist from the Adelaide Hills. In this episode we chat about her background with art from studying graphic design to what she is doing today.

Recognizing that sitting behind the computer all day doing graphic design didn't suit her, Tessa shares how she made the move to Melbourne and started doing visual merchandising and events. She describes how she was working with big clients in a fast paced industry making their exhibition stands for trade show events. Which she recalls as being “very cool but also very stressful”.

Tessa continued to work for a similar company in Adelaide when she returned. We touch on the topic of burn-out and the health challenge that led Tessa into wanting to reduce stress and follow her passion for art full time. After this life altering event she realized she needed to do things to help herself heal and recover, which led to a big lifestyle change.

Painting had always been humming away in the background for her while she had her corporate career. She had started off doing paintings for friends and then progressing to selling to people she did not know.

At the start of 2022 was when she quit her events job and made the transition to full time art. Ros points out that from her varied work background it builds a good foundation of skills that all tie together to aid in a career as an artist. Tessa has since continued to focus her energy on her own art business venture.

Tessa shares some big insights from her journey so far, including:

  • Reducing stress and learning to rest
  • Pursuing new creative opportunities
  • Sharing art online and putting yourself out there
  • Mindset shifts that she had to make to transition to art full time
  • Giving herself permission to do things that make her happy
  • Embracing inconsistent income as an artist
  • Being strategic in planning a financial buffer for her art business

There are many lessons, we could keep the list going and going, but you will have to tune in to see what Tessa has to share!

We hope that you enjoy the Show!

05 Jul 2022017 Why It Is So Hard To Call Yourself An Artist00:26:43

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight Ros and Laura are having a chat about claiming the title as an “Artist” and how some people find it easy and some others really struggle with that title. We touch on the subject of Art School, and consider the impact of critiques impacting on some artists' self-confidence.

We chat about how the title of “Artist” sits for Ros as she is largely self taught. Ros describes it as a way of being and based around the way that you perceive the world, and she feels confident using that term. Ros describes her understanding of being an artist as noticing beauty wherever you are and seeing colour combinations, curves of leaves and labels it as a “way of being”. Laura talks about the creative lifestyle aspect in building community, visiting galleries.

Laura talks about mindset work and personal development as a path to “inner validation” as an Artist. Ros talks about creative calling and the role we play in the world. She says “If you are a visual and creative human is it perhaps part of your journey here to share that with others and help them to pay attention to the beauty that is around them.”

Laura talks about the artists role as reflectors into the world - echoing what Ros was describing an artists purpose in the world, and describes how we see the world through what we create. Ros shares how claiming that title as artist and taking that step models for other people as well how we can be ourselves (as artists) and we can be whoever we want to be. She encourages listeners to “own it and be proud”.

Ros brings up the example of artist Georgia O’Keife and how she painted close ups of florals because she wanted people to pay attention to beauty. Her role was to encourage people to stop and take a moment to appreciate that beauty that she captured in her art.

Laura raises another topic around the stories that we take on when we are young from friends and family or teachers and how that plays into our perception about the title of an Artist. Ros mentions that she used to be a primary teacher and she has strong beliefs around this topic. She shares that a teacher's personal opinion on a child's art is irrelevant, and what matters is that the kids are tuning in to what they like. She mentions its a lot more complex than maths and english especially on a psychological level in terms of nurturing little creatives.

Laura suggests to listeners to look back on the messages received from our younger years and reflect on those stories as a way to work on your confidence in calling yourself an artist. Ros suggests taking a step back and looking at what defines the term “artist” and what that means to you. She presents some questions - Is it because they make art every day? Is it because they sell their work? Is it because all they “do” is art and they don't have another “day” job?

Laura mentions that creatives are mostly working in isolation and that putting your work out into the world can feel really vulnerable and she states that that confidence builds the more and more that you do it. Laura suggests considering where does your art fit? Where do you feel comfortable?

She says “If you feel supported in your art practice that will create a nurturing space for you to develop that confidence.” Ros mentions having just one or 2 art buddies that you can talk to that can support you on your journey because you can't give up because you are having a bad week, it's important to have those people around for support in those times.

10 Oct 2023050 How to Tap into Mentorship and Community for Success as an Artist - Step 5 of 500:34:48

In this final episode in the series on how to turn your hobby into an art business, Laura and Ros chat about the importance of both mentorship and community when it comes to playing the long game. For an overview of the series, tune into episode 40.

We talk about mentors as people who can see the big picture and help to guide you as you grow as an artist in business. Your mentor could be someone online who you have never met. It could be someone who inspires you through podcasts or books or it could be someone completely outside of the art realm or even someone who has passed.

Community is also non-negotiable. It is our artist community that lifts us up when things are tricky and who offer us hope, inspiration, support and encouragement. Communities of artists ‘get’ one another in a world where artists are often misunderstood.

Tune in to hear the 4 actionable steps for finding your community and your mentor.

24 May 2022014 How Making Art Leads To Self Development00:20:46

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight the gang is back!! After a break in regular programming with Ros doing some interviews – Laura and Ros are back together on the Mic and discussing - how making art leads to personal development.

At the beginning of the episode Ros discusses the topic of “Perfectionism” for artists and how it crops up for many creatives. She talks about a time when she was creating artwork and decided to make a website for her art and she just put it out there to see what happens – which is a great way to combat perfectionism. The philosophy of just doing it anyway.

Laura talks about perfectionism being present for her today in her arts practice and that she has now become accepting and okay when perfectionism rears its head. She talks about a time that her work was not measuring up to the skill level that she had imagined and only through doing more and more art that she gained confidence in her work.

Ros remarks that ALL people are capable of making art. Laura agrees. The way that each of us perceive our work is different. It comes from the stories and narratives about art that we were told when we were young. When placing judgement on whether a work is deemed “good” or “bad” and this may impact on if a person peruses a creative practice or not.

Ros talks about a strategy that artists can take around imagining what you want to achieve –and asking yourself what baby steps can take me closer to this direction? She also brings up “Quantity over quality” from Julia Camerons – the artists way. As a way of working past blocks in your art practice.

They both discuss the topic of confidence and Ros remarks about what has changed for her is her level of confidence in putting her art out into the world. By doing it again and again. showing up on Instagram and showing her face on stories the more her confidence grew. Laura has also had a similar change in her confidence levels as she set a challenge to develop a new body of work for a solo exhibition and then a second one.

Many interesting stories are shared… Happy listening…

Currently she is in the midst of a really impressive project of painting 100 murals while travelling around Australia.

In this chat we dive into PJ’s background starting out as a creative kid in primary school. After leaving school Pj bought a one way ticket, landing herself in Canberra, where she worked and studied business. But when she started opening up about her creative side and showing her friends and colleagues new creative opportunities started to come her way from art commissions to teaching.

PJ shares some really valuable tips for anyone interested in adding murals as one of their creative income streams. 21 Nov 2023053 From A Career In Law To Success In Her Art Business With Joan Blond00:40:35

This fortnight, Ros and Laura bring you an interview with the incredible self taught artist - Joan Blond. In this episode we talk about how Joan came into her art practice after a life transition, now realising she had grown kids with their own lives - she found herself with more time alone and she found solace in diving into an art practice as something she could do for herself. Having grown up with art when she was younger with her mum being an artist, Joan was interested in developing her skills as a painter.

She started off painting things that she enjoyed (which she still does to this day) but some of her first subject matter was horses. She started painting them in bright colours then moved onto the broader animal category, she was sharing her work online and people were liking them and buying them and then she started to transition into abstract painting. From sharing her art online she was approached by Art to Art. Joan says that she never approached anyone but galleries would approach her - and it snowballed .

At the start when things were taking off she still kept her job in Law as a legal secretary and she was painting at night. She found that it was becoming really tiring juggling both her commissioned paintings, producing work for stockists and her job. So she decided to get “brave” and follow her dream, and with continued success in her art career she has been painting ever since the day she made that decision to leave!

She had some great exposure when she received a phone call asking if she was happy to have some of her paintings featured on TV show the Block. Two of her paintings were in Kerrie and Spencers home and they won that season!

Joan has some exciting things coming up - Currently she has a Black Friday Sale on her paintings. As well as a solo exhibition at Gullotti Galleries in Perth - at the start of december 2023 so keep an eye out on Joan’s Instagram to find out the details for both of these events.

Hope that you enjoy this really inspirational interview with Joan - We love hearing from our listeners, please let us know what takeaways you have from this episode by sending us a DM!

15 Aug 2023046 How to Build Your Dream Art Business - Step 3 of 500:30:17

This episode is a follow-up to episode 40 where we introduced the 5 ingredients to stepping things up and turning your art hobby into a thriving art business.

In this episode, we dive into strategy (ingredient no.3) and the importance of looking at the big picture when building your art business. We chat about how strategic thinking helps both artists in the beginning stages who are building an art business from scratch and also those who are more advanced and feeling the need to review their direction and possibly redirect and carve out a new path.

Laura and Ros talk about why it is essential to build an art business which suits your lifestyle, who you are and the future you want to have rather than simply following opportunities. We touch on comparisonitis and the value of staying on your own path.

During our conversation, we also explore ways to visualise your future from journaling to vision boards and chats with trusted friends, and we also refer to the various types of art business models available to artists today. Learn more about the business models by tuning into episode 30 “From Starving Artist to Making an Income from Your Art” and download your guide from Ros via the link below.

Ros gets ranty about the concept of multiple income streams and their role when building a sustainable art business. Learn more about income streams with Ros’ ‘Make Money from Your Art’ Masterclass - link below.

Coming up is goal setting and mentoring, so stay tuned for our next episodes!

If you are looking for support and guidance on your artist journey, Laura and Ros both offer mentoring at a range of price points. Don’t be shy - reach out to us via Instagram DMs.

22 Nov 2022027 Interview With Ange Miller And Building Confidence As An Artist00:43:50

We are back with another interview episode! Today we are talking to the inspiring and amazing Ange Miller.

We ask her about her journey into art and she recounts how she always loved making things and how art became a sacred space for her. She describes art as being an anchor for her soul  in her younger years.

While studying she recounts how she struggled with performance anxiety. Ange felt like there was no place for her, she describes the many challenges she experienced after graduation entering into a really dark place. She was invited by her previous Tutor - Andy Collis to assist in the classroom and within a year she was taking a class of her own and making up lesson plans.

In the episode we ask her about “art school wounding” Ange gets fired up on this topic describing it as a broader “Education Wound” starting in primary school: and how students are not validated or recognised for what is uniquely inside of them.

Ange states that the key to overcoming this wound is - Confidence - and becoming the author of our own life. She shares that - each of us has a unique message and by getting back in touch to the deepest part of ourselves we can access this. Ange says that Creativity is the foundation to life and it is energising when we find authentic flow.

Ange also shares some valuable insights into:

  • Learning to let go
  • Fostering a long term love affair with your art
  • How energy is often underestimated in the painting process
  • Her unique Commission process
  • The Instagram treadmill
  • How articulating your story “sells the art”

11 Oct 2022024 How To Make Progress In Your Art Business - Part 200:25:00

We’re continuing the conversation this week on how to make progress in your art business.

Ros and Laura talk about the importance of playing the long game no matter your persona. They chat about the fact that good things take time, no matter how hard that pill is to swallow. Ros shares her experience with approaching dreams with high energy and being reminded that sustainability and balance are essential to long term success in art business.

Ros says “It's really important to set your goals, to know what you want, to allow yourself to dream, make plans to get of closer to those dreams but it is OK for your growth to be a little bit slower than your heart desires it to be so that you can maintain that growth and continue growing your art business in a steady way that is sustainable.”

Laura raises the topic of perfectionism and points out its dark side and how it can hold you back from success. The “all or nothing” approach, “perfect or not at all” can really wreak havoc and stop our dreams from taking shape.

Laura suggests casting perfectionism and comparison aside and “really tuning into that gut feeling and that intuition. Setting goals around not what you feel like you should be doing to be a successful creative business owner but instead thinking about what sort of lifestyle I want and then identifying actions that can move towards that aligned goal.”

Ros and Laura touch on many other topics in this chat:

  • Feelings Based Goals
  • Outcome Based Goals
  • Importance of structure and systems in art business
  • How to deal with resistance and procrastination
  • Why we follow joy

21 Jun 2022016 How To Move Past Artist Block And Be Inspired Again00:32:22

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight we chat about artist block and how to move past it. We explore two different interpretations of artist block from Laura’s first hand experience of a block in combination with physical illness and clinical depression; and Ros’ focus on the psychological barriers we create for ourselves as artists.

We talk about the strategies that Laura used to get back into art making from journaling, to self analysis and following the breadcrumbs of joy, simplicity and nostalgia.

Laura shares how her medium and goals changed after her creative block and why she chose to simplify her process to enable a return to art-making. We also touch on the small steps we can make to get back into an art routine from habit stacking, keeping it easy and capping the time.

We also share how these tips can also help those that are feeling stagnant in their practice.

07 Nov 2023052 Why You Should Include Art Workshops in Your Artist Income Streams00:37:44

Wondering what you need to know when setting up your in-person art workshop offering? In this episode, Laura and Ros lay it all on the table. Tune in to hear both of our views on art workshops from determining whether or not workshops are a good fit for you to how to set your session pricing.

We share a whole range of actionable tips around:

  1. Your Why - We chat about how important it is to consider why you want to run art workshops and also who you want to teach by paying attention to who lights you up.
  2. Being Courageous - Whilst you have the skills, it is normal to feel wobbly when you’re a newbie to teaching. If your why and your who are aligned, it is a time for courage. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Give it a try possibly just with friends first for the cost of supplies. And build from there.
  3. Demographics and Venues - Choose which demographic you want to focus on and research if there is a need for your art workshops amongst that demographic in your area. Then scope out venues and attend other people’s workshops to get an idea of how they are run.
  4. Collaboration - Choose venues that already have a community associated with them as this will help you get exposure. Collaborate with other artists to facilitate workshops together or tap into local tourism events or explore your council initiatives.
  5. Pricing - Calculate the cost of consumable supplies from paint to mineral water plus any space hire costs. Keep in mind that there will be an outlay for the re-usable tools and equipment. Consider the length of time the workshop runs plus travel time, set up, pack up.

07 May 2024065 Tapping Into Intuition To Build Your Art Career with Pamela Bates00:35:17

In this episode, we are chatting with Pamela Bates who is a self described “Soul-Fueled Abstract Painter” from New Hampshire.

We discuss how Pamela started off on the artist's path and she tells us a story about a visit to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and how that experience changed her life. Standing in front of an artwork by John Singer Sargent she knew instantly that she needed to pick up a paintbrush and make art!

This episode covers interesting conversations around listening to your intuition and giving yourself permission to play. As well as working in her own practice Pamela is also a teacher and has a range of interesting online classes that is aimed at igniting creativity and tapping into intuition. Pamela also has a YouTube channel - see the links in the show notes below.

As a self-taught artist, she talks about letting intuition lead the way in her art career by letting it unfold and follow the next step in her art career. We discuss Pamela's collectors club and how she cultivates a sense of community and repeat collectors on Instagram. She does this by making an online event to showcase her art for sale for a limited time.

Pamela has an in person exhibit coming up from July to August at Blue Door Gallery in Mayne. She also has work on display at Windows on Water Art Gallery in Exeter. We really enjoyed this incredibly inspiring and motivating talk with Pamela.

30 Aug 2022021 Ideas To Help You Make More Money From Your Art00:34:57

This fortnight, Ros and Laura are back together and bringing you a conversation about how to make money from your art and generate more money as a creative person. This episode covers different income stream options for creative people. Laura and Ros discuss what they have done over time in their businesses to earn more money from their art practice.

Laura shares that one of her main streams of income to support her practice has been sharing her skills through teaching. By doing this she was able to use the money generated from classes to re-invest back into the creative projects that she was passionate about pursuing.

In terms of selling her art she identifies that it took focused intention to work towards an exhibition to sell her paintings. She had to work through money blocks to get to the point of making the kind of money that she wanted to make from selling her paintings. Laura shares that lots of journaling and intention setting helped her to do this.

Laura and Ros share a common money block - “it’s hard to make money as an artist” that they, and many other artists have struggled with. Ros shares about making the jump into her own art biz and the motivation to do that came from her being deeply un-fulfilled in her job. She could see that she had so much more to give, and her skills were being undervalued. She had no desire to go back, so she “had” to make money from her art, she does this through varied income streams.

Ros also mentions Elizabeth Gilbert’s book - Big Magic - and a concept that is outlayed in the book about not putting too much pressure on your art. She says to make sure you have a job or income to your practice to relieve the pressure on solely making money from your art. It can be through a side-hustle, a day job or ideally something related to the creative industry.

Some of the various income stream options for artists discussed in this episode are:

  • Teaching - group and 1:1 mentoring
  • Online Membership
  • Commissions
  • Instagram Sales of original arts or prints
  • Open Studio event with art for sale
  • Original Art - selling independently or through retails or galleries
  • Exhibitions - solo
  • Group Shows
  • Art Prints
  • Wholesale - art prints or products
  • Making products - cards, t-shirts, tea-towels etc.
  • Local Markets or bigger design markets
  • Projects with local council or local organisations

25 Apr 2023038 Our Top Tips for Preparing for a Successful Art Show00:33:41

Perhaps you are a newbie to art and have never put on a show before or perhaps you’ve had a break from your artmaking and you’re ready to get out there again. No matter where you are on your journey, art exhibitions are a great idea for a range of reasons.

This fortnight, Laura and Ros chat about the benefits of getting out there and showing your work via an art exhibition, either solo or group. From signalling to the world that you are serious about your art, giving you something meaningful to work towards and a reason to create a cohesive body of work, there are more benefits to putting on an art show than simply sales.

Laura talks about her upcoming solo art show at the Kilderkin Distillery in Ballarat and shares that the purpose of the show is multifaceted. Acting as a mutual marketing exercise, the show will promote her abstract art workshops which are part of a Visit Ballarat initiative and also bring a new audience to the distillery. It is a collaboration. And art sales are a bonus.

Ros points out that art sales are in fact an external gauge of success. As sales are outside of the artist’s control, it is important to look at internal measures of success as well such as personal development, exposure and marketing content benefits.

Laura and Ros cover all the things you should consider when planning a show from choosing a venue; deciding where to hang each artwork; planning the opening event details; knowing how to process sales; marketing your event and so forth. 02 Jan 2024056 How to Befriend Failure and Rejection for Success as an Artist00:30:02

Befriending failure and rejection as an artist isn't easy, but it's a crucial step in your creative journey. Embrace imperfection, confront your fears, and view these setbacks as opportunities for growth. Remember that even the most celebrated artists faced their share of failures and rejections before achieving success.

Failure is a powerful teacher if you're willing to listen.

We also talk about rubix cubes?!?

31 Jan 2023032 How Not to Be a Copycat Artist00:34:11

In this episode, Laura and Ros chat about whether it is OK to copy another artist’s work. Are you allowed to copy an artwork you see on Pinterest? Can you sell that artwork? How much do you need to change that artwork before you sell it? Can you create an artwork during a workshop either in-person or online and then share it on social media? Can you sell that work? Where is that line?

We unpack what copyright is and what intellectual property is in the context of the arts and how knowledge of this can help you as you transition into a professional art practice.

Ros shares how important external influences are on one’s art practice and how our art is a mix-up of all of our previous art experiences. Laura adds that it is ‘normal’ to be influenced by your evolving tastes and experiences over time in areas like music, art, childhood, experimentation and how all of these factors have an impact on her art practice.

Laura and Ros chat about artworks resulting from workshops or courses and whether or not they can be shared on social media or sold. We discuss what good etiquette is and reference the beautiful Elizabeth Gilbert who states in her book Big Magic that “we must imitate before we innovate.” Tossing around the concept that nothing is ever truly original, we suggest that trying things on and experimenting with various styles is an essential part of the art process and your journey as a creative.

Ros chats about why she recommends for her students to complete as many courses as possible, so that their toolkit is truly a mash-up and they can pic and choose all the little bits that relate to their own style.

We hope that you enjoy the Show!

We chat about the idea of self nurturing through journaling and stepping into the role of mother or higher self as you write, listening to your challenges and responding with love, wisdom and unconditional support.

Laura shares how she uses process journaling to document her art-making process so that she can replicate beautiful colours in the future and work smoothly through her commission projects.

24 Oct 2023051 Balancing an Art Career with Mum and Self Taught Artist Emily Viski00:37:21

This fortnight, Ros and Laura bring you an up-beat and inspiring interview with mum and self taught painter Emily Viski. In this episode Emily shares her background story and her interesting journey into art-making.

Coming from a family that encouraged creativity, she shares that she never really thought that she could become a professional artist as she didn't really see anyone around her doing so. Covid led to a shift in her career and that's when she really started to dive into exploring art making and doing online classes along with sharing her art on Instagram.

Emily shares some great advice for new and beginner artists as well as fellow mums and self taught artists who are wanting to step into making art as a career. After she let go of having to find her style she found that it led to her first commission and then it just flowed from there.

She also talks about applying for many art prizes - the rejection that comes along with putting in many applications time and time again. As well as sharing some great mindset shifts for aspiring artists that are seeking representation or wanting to enter their art into a prize.

Emily will be having an exhibition at Eltham Community Gallery, located at Panther Place Eltham - The official opening is on the 3rd of November between 6 to 8pm. Be sure to head on over and say hi to her! The show will hang until the 10th December. There will be an online release of the artwork for sale on 29th October from 7pm - check out Emily’s Instagram for details @emandthelittlejemstudio

26 Sep 2023049 How a Passion and Love for Travel Led to Art Sales with Salvatore Dibartolo00:34:58

This fortnight, we bring you an enriching interview with the talented Salvatore Dibartolo. Based in Melbourne Australia Salvatore created vibrant paintings fueled by his love for travel. As a late starter to his professional art career. He shares his creative background saying that creativity was encouraged within his household and that everyone in his family was gifted with their own particular artistic talents.

He refined his painting technique learning from youtube and looking things up online. Salvatore landed on his current painting style from advice from Nancy Donaldson the CEO and founder of Art Lovers Australia. His paintings fuse his love for travel and in particular Italy as he spent 5 years in Sicily in his 20’s. When he talks about his travels and experiences in Italy you really get a sense for his passion and why he aims to bring that energy into the artworks that he produces.

In our conversation we touch on aspects of the business of art discussing Salvatores experience in setting up his own website. Which both Ros and Laura think is a great example of a website for those artists who are just starting out - go take a look! We touch on social media and branding as well as representation in Art Lovers Australia, Fenton and Fenton, Art to Art and the Rising Talent competition that he entered. As well as Georgia from the block buying an artwork from him and how that exposure assisted in getting his work recognised. We also talk about his experience producing a range of Prints and his experience with drop shipping.

Salvatore has really interesting insights to share and we hope that you enjoy this chat - We love hearing from our listeners, let us know what takeaways you have from this episode!

20 Jun 2023042 Discover Your Identity as an Artist - Step 1 of 500:37:03

In this episode, we revisit the conversation from episode 40 where we shared the five ingredients for turning your art hobby into a fulfilling art business.

Laura and Ros big deeper and chat specifically on the topic of how to find your identity as an artist, find your style, create a volume of work and refine your technique.

We talk through the reasons why artists may seek an art style that is recognisable as their own. Laura describes this as a journey of self discovery and a way to gain clarity and direction. Ros adds that your voice as an artist is more than an aesthetic style, it also relates to the message you want to convey and the impact you want your art to have on the world.

Laura notes that while the stage of finding your style is a fun one, once you have hit your stride as an artist and built your confidence, it is important not to get stuck in the learning phase. The goal must then become to put your learning into practice.

We share these steps for finding your identity as an artist:

  1. Set your intentions
  2. Do some practical prioritisation - consider your routine, time blocking, boundaries
  3. Do the work with awareness around your motivators and how you work best
  4. Consider developing a portfolio
  5. Do some reflection - journaling/talking

The key tawaway we would like you to gain from the episode is the importance of having clear intentions, committing to them and showing up. These are the factors that will have you making traction

06 Dec 2022028 What on Earth is an Artist Bio, Artist CV and Artist Statement?00:27:17

In this episode, Laura and Ros cover the topic of artist documents. We chat about artist CVs, artist statements and artist bios and discuss WHY we need them; the difference between them and what to include in each of them. Laura has even made you a workbook on this topic, so scroll on down and download that bad boy ASAP!

Whilst not all artists will feel confident in their writing ability, these documents play a key role when applying for an art prize or gallery show or creating a press release, a website or even just a marketing flyer. Written information about yourself and your practice is key to growing your profile.

Artist Bio - A short description about yourself and who you are as an artist. It includes what inspires you and a little bit about your practice. Keep this concise. It is a brief profile of you. Do not go into detail on your education, prizes etc. Keep it short and snappy.

Artist CV - This is like a resume, specific to your arts career. It includes exhibitions, publications, educational background. It is a comprehensive document that you use when applying for grants and funding, galleries, large exhibitions etc.

Artist Statement - This document compliments pieces of your art, usually in the context of an exhibition or gallery application. In this statement, you can go into more depth about your inspiration and also your location if relevant. It is a sales tool and helps to give context to your artwork and invites a deeper connection with your work. An artist statement helps others to read into your artworks and the elements, themes, ideas, processes, techniques and so forth.

02 Aug 2022019 How To Value Yourself As An Artist00:29:08

This fortnight we bring you a powerful topic - How to VALUE yourself as an artist. This topic links into a previous episode on - Why is it so hard to call yourself an artist which was episode 17. Link Below. So for this episode we are assuming that listeners are at the point of using the “artist” label, and are now wanting to work on their value.

Laura mentions that when she made the “decision” to run her own art business – that allowed herself to give permission to buying art supplies, carving out time for art and all the lifestyle elements that come with being an artist – catching up with creative friends – is considered networking. Laura proposes that the feelings of “guilt” might surface when creatives and makers are at the hobby level and are not yet at the business level.

Ros talks mentions that if you are having fun or enjoying your work it might not be “seen” as valuable. Which she says is BS by the way!! She states that the key part of valuing yourself as an artist is having a community and connections with other artists and peers.

Laura brings up how artists can sometimes feel like they are being taken advantage of when they are asked to work for free for exposure. Because the arts in general are undervalued because of societal norms. Laura mentions that mindset work can help in valuing yourself and valuing your time when undertaking creative projects and it is possible to get paid really well for something that you enjoy.Ros talks about the recent project that she is working on with her local council where she has been asked to paint a piano. The contact person is amazing because from the outset they proposed that they will pay her as an artist ethically. She pointed Ros in the direction to NAVA , a Professional membership and advocacy agency for Artists in Australia.

Ros reiterates the value of Art buddies or friends in small business to run things by in terms of being paid well. Laura mentions that if you undertake a project and you are not being paid well you will end up resentful of the project, and if you are not being valued by the customer or the organisation that has asked you to undertake the project then it is not worth doing.

Laura suggests a quick exercise to figure out your base hourly rate? and feeling into what feels good to you. Ros talks about how she prices her work and she said she looks inward to see what “feels good” and is a fair price for everybody. Laura talks about what you sign up for when you step into professional practice as an artist – inconsistent income, gig-based economy, you are also signing up for people wanting you to work for free, and on the opposite side people that really value what you do as well. Ros mentions that you are signing up for those emotions on the rollercoaster ride of being an artist.

Ros was so excited to be approached for the opportunity from her local council to paint the piano because she loves music as well. Ros talks about all of the emotions that surfaced in undertaking this process but she was aware that it all comes as a part of the journey and once it was complete she was really happy with the outcome. She mentions that if you accept that the rollercoaster of emotions is a part of the process it will see you in good stead.

Ros talks about how it takes persistence to be an artist and mentions the saying that “Art is a career for stubborn people”  and going from a different career to full time art you come up against people that don’t value the arts or don’t value small business. There will be people who consider your career choice as a “risk”. Ros talks about when she moved away from primary teaching her Mum not wanting her to give up that position “just in case” because it was “safe” career.

Ros asks Laura if she had anyone in her life who had those beliefs and Laura shared about how her family has always wanted her to have a “sensible and stable job”. Ros says her strategy is to ignore the nay-sayers.

Laura shares about how she had inner conflict with herself going through art school and then feeling like she never fit into the regular 9-5 workplace but since she has found out more about herself and how she operates and works best in the world the clear it has become that being an artists suits her because she can set her own schedule, she can say yes and no to different projects and she can manage her energy levels better. It doesn't matter what other people say – if this is the right path for you -  just dedicate yourself to it.

Ros talks about forging a career in the arts is a big personal journey. When Ros started to take her art seriously, she mentions it was like a “coming home” - which is a really beautiful way of seeing her practice.

We had a lovely Podcast review from Sarah McKenzie @sarah.mckenzie.art on Instagram.

“Thanks again for a great Podcast, can relate to to much of what you are saying. Look forward to being more intentional with goals and direction which is easy to go off on whims and tangents, which can be fine but not always aligned with your bigger picture” - Thankyou for the kind words Sarah!

16 Aug 2022020 Interview With Artist Steph Wallace and How To Take Risks As An Artist00:36:21

This fortnight, Laura takes the reins and brings you an interview with the inspirational artist Steph Wallace who talks about her career to date and her latest workshop offerings.

Steph chats about her creativity as a child, her fine arts degree experience and her journey between then and now. Having explored all the mediums from paper cutting to textile art, Steph discusses the importance of not getting too locked into a medium. Laura and Steph chat about the idea that artists do not need to niche as hard as the industry suggests, that constant evolution is OK and that having a supportive community is the secret ingredient to living a rewarding and authentic life as an artist and creative.

Based on her personal experience, Steph shares that her support network (online and in person) has helped her to turn her many ideas into change and progress. Her hot tip is to be open to where you community members may come from - they may be people who comment on your social media post or some whose podcast you listen to. They could even be a stranger who you randomly meet at a gallery in Ballarat.

Steph has done all the things! She has run an art gallery; taught art classes overseas; mastered small business via her tiny furniture biz and; is now incredibly excited to be running ceramics workshops for women who are ready to carve out some time for themselves.

Having experienced firsthand the benefits of creative practice for mothers and the power of art making when it comes to mental wellness, Steph runs her workshops from the heart. She also offers some advice for others wanting to run their own art workshops.

26 Apr 2022012 Interview With Curator Philippa Demase and How To Manage Your Artist Mindset00:31:53

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

This fortnight’s episode is a little different. For the first time, we bring you an interview!

Ros puts on her interviewer hat and chats with curator Philippa Demase from the Art To Art Gallery in Melbourne Australia. We discuss a whole range of topics from the value of community for artists, what to look for before seeking gallery representation and how to manage your artist mindset during art prize applications.

Philippa touches on the importance of community for artists and how gallery representation often has this hidden benefit. Linked to Jeff Goins’ book “Real Artists Don’t Starve,” Ros raises the point that “successful” creatives don’t make art in a silo.

Beyond the community aspect of gallery representation, Philippa goes on to share a number of the pros and cons of being connected to a gallery from commission fees, assistance during hard times (such as lockdowns) and the occasional cheese platter bill. She also chats about some of the things to consider and look for before approaching a gallery. You may want a pen and notepad for this part of the episode!

Philippa speaks also about the Unearthed Art Prize - which is facilitated by the Art to Art Gallery - for emerging, unrepresented artists and how challenging it is to choose the finalists! Submissions open at the end of November annually, so be sure to enter.

Importantly, we touch on the role of stamina for creatives. Philippa assures artists that any unsuccessful applications to prizes or gallery representation are not personal and encourages creatives to continue applying. Whilst being very understanding that it is hard not to be emotional about rejection, she encourages artists to have faith that they will get where they want to be if they keep trying and pushing through.

Philippa talks about her graphic design and branding background and how that has played a role in the creation of Art To Art. The way that she followed her heart and her passion to build her gallery business is something that I’m sure you can relate to as a creative.

We hope that you enjoy the show!
