Like many of my guests, I followed them for years! This week's chat with one of the founders of @TheClub is one I thought never possible such is their following and influence on golf's image in the modern day. I really enjoyed sitting down, remotely, with Ryan Curtis co-founder of @TheClub and discussing everything from early days of picking a make shift club up to how golf can change for the good.

He is still an elite golfer in his own right and now running his own Irish Tour and Event business. We get into his origins in golf in a hurling mad village in Ireland, his social care work and how he made his career in golf work.

23 Apr 2021Ep 76: Amy Condon on making Golf FUN!00:32:46

Having spoken to Amy Condon on numerous occasions in putting together this episode, I think she quite possibly is the most personable person I have had on the show. Driven, Focused, Goal orientated, has a plan but most of all is loads of Fun. It was great to hear of why she embarked on her PGA journey and her plans once achieved. The legacy she is building at Elm Park and it's Junior Section is second to none in the country, but most important of all is that the kids love it because it's fun.

I hope you enjoy the episode and if you do, please let a friend know about it.

02 Apr 2022Ep 111: World #1 Brendan Lawlor00:48:46

“You can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed”, Napoleon Hill

Brendan Lawlor has not only been copiously successful in his rise to World #1 Disability Golfer, but every step of the way he has passionately spoken about how other disability golfers should be afforded the opportunity to play, compete and included in the game of golf.

That passion is bearing fruit, as the world’s outlook on inclusion is changing and looking to personalities, demographics and sport to put their support behind.

Brendan is a transparent, incredible young man and I urge you to get behind him as he strives to break even further ground in the sport of golf and in disability golf.

This week it's a trip to the black and amber of Kilkenny and a walk around Mount Juliet. I meet the director of golf, delve into his background and what can be expected at Mount Juliet.

There is multiple apologies in this episode about the leaf blower in the background, although like golf I am in pursuit of perfection with each and every episode - done is better than perfect in this occasion however.

16 Apr 2022Ep 113: Harry Colt’s Castlerock00:36:34

This week we speak with Bert McKay, General Manger at Castlerock. It’s been one hundred and twenty one years since the formal inauguration of Castlerock. Harry Colt made it the links we play today, albeit more recently refreshed and updated by Martin Hawtree in 2017. A golf course played in the landscape not on the landscape, it is indeed a fine hallmark Colt design. Hollows, rises, banks, plateaus, pot bunkers and greens varying in sizes all contribute to an incredible links experience just twenty minutes from the Open hosting Royal Portrush.

23 Apr 2022Ep 114: What can you wear playing Golf?00:31:37

Over drinks, some friends and I had a good debate over what is acceptable to wear when golfing. With Tyrell Hatton winning in a hoodie, Justin Thomas and many more embracing the golf jogger whilst the ladies game has always had a fashion forward sense of style. If we were talking about it, I thought it might be of value to put a little solo episode together taking in some of your opinions and get a synopsis of what is deemed suitable on the fairway in 2022.

04 Jun 2022Ep 120: The Sleeping Giant Ceann Sibeal | Cormac Flannery00:54:09

“We don’t do stuffy” is proclaimed in the About Us section of the Dingle Golf Club website. What they are as a community is incredibly proud, which they should be given the insanely good product they have created on the most westerly point for golf on the Wild Atlantic Way. They are indeed, custodians. Custodians of golf, of the Irish language, of Irish culture and craic, actually custodians of the game and are growing it insanely quickly in this pocket of Ireland known as the Dingle peninsula. Cormac Flannery is indeed at the the head of that experience, of that custodianship, whether he admits it or not. He is the spearhead giving the golfing community a their direction in any case.

The course takes in breath-taking scenery on the Dingle Peninsula along the Wild Atlantic Way. Originally designed by Eddie Hackett, finished off by the great Christy O’Connor Jnr off the original Hackett drawings. You have to come play here.

11 Jun 2022Ep 121: The Major Championships of Amateur Golf in Ireland (Womens + Mens)00:20:06

LIV Golf is not about growing the game. It is not about those golfers doing best for their families. It is not about golf at all. It’s a PR crusade for a country looking to avert the eyes of the world from their home atrocities.

So this week’s episode IS NOT about LIV Golf. It’s about pure golf. You cannot get purer golf then that of the amateur game. This episode in fact should rightfully be laid out at the start of the calendar year! Note to self!

There is a superb Amateur event on this very weekend, the AIG Womens Amatuer Close is on in Grange Golf Club in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin. See you there!

Meanwhile, this week’s episode will walk us through the major amateur championships in Ireland for both Women and Men. Those that have been played and won and the remaining championships for the year. With a bit of history and some serious name dropping of past champions along the way too!

I hope you enjoy this episode and I trust I’ll see you in Royal Portush later in July for our Podcast Roadtrip :)

18 Jun 2022Ep 122: Beth Coulter on Sun Devils, Camogie and being Irish Close Champion00:34:50

A few days after winning the Irish Women’s Close at Grange Golf Club and fresh off the camogie field, Beth Coulter joined me for a great, insightful chat. Growing up in a non-golf household, what being from the country actually means (I have a test for that!), looking forward to the Women’s Amateur Championship next week and pretty much beginning a new life as a Sun Devil in Arizona State University in August there is plenty of interest to talk about when Beth Coulter is about!

I hope you enjoy the episode, if you do - please share it with your family and friends.

25 Jun 2022Ep 123: Women’s Get into Golf Special00:51:49

I’ve been meaning to cover Women’s Golf as a whole since I started the podcast. Not women golfers, I try and do that as best I can (Hazel Kavangh, Beth Coulter, Lauren Walsh, Mary Doyle, Rebecca Codd, Olivia Mehaffey etc) I mean the whole area of womens golf in golf clubs and in the golf industry itself. The reasons why women don’t generally play. How do golf clubs and culture need to change. What do men do that annoy women golfers. Why women are better than men at golf. Questions women have before getting started.

I’ve tried cover as many bases in today’s episode! I must also thank Jen Feighery and Noelle Francisco for their time and contributing to today’s episode.

The winners of the Masters giveaway are listed in today’s episode as well as information about how you can win one of two JP McManus Pro-Am cap tickets!

27 Feb 2023Ep 145: Mark Ruddy - Behind the Scenes with the General Manager01:09:59

The Ruddy name is synonymous with golf in Ireland. One Ruddy family denotes the epitome of golf course design, whilst another is best in class coaching and golf hospitality. We are chatting with the latter today with Mark Ruddy, brother to David (Episode: 99), and now General Manager at Kilkenny Golf Club. Mark is well travelled in the golf management scene, a senior member of the IGCMA (Irish Golf Club Managers Association), a PGA professional and still holds his membership in his boyhood a hurling mad club of Thurles. If you’re keen to find out what a general manager does, from the horses mouth, or looking for systems to kick start in your own club then this episode is for you!

16 Jun 2021Ep 84: Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2021 with Matt Sandercock Director of Golf at Mount Juliet Estate00:19:20

Super short and sweet this week, but FULL of good stuff. Massive appreciation to Matt Sandercock who amongst a flurry of estate, tour and media commitments still had time for little oul me and all of you listening in.

So what's changed at Mount Juliet a year or so on from when the Irish Open was meant to have taken place on site last year. It's the 30th Anniversary of Jack Nicklaus Signature design at Mount Juliet to boot so it is quite a bumper month if not a bumper year for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open to be held at the estate once more.

18 Jan 2024Ep 163: Part 1 - Carne Golf Links Special | Fiona Meehan Togher00:53:15

Carne is a special place. Biblical. Spiritual. Golf on the edge of the world.

It has become a place of pilgrimage for not only golfers from all parishes of Ireland, but for golfers from every corner of the globe.

Is it the scale of the dunes? The rawness of the terrain or the subtlety of Hackett’s routing through the scale of sand and sea? I don’t know, but I know I need to go back.

We kick off the year on the PaddyTalks Podcast with a special 2-part episode, with General Manager Fiona Meehan Togher being the guest for part one.

28 Feb 2024Ep 166: Ronan Mullarney00:35:28

Welcome to this week’s episode of PaddyTalks Golf Podcast and a chat with one of my favourite G-G-G-Galway people, Ronan Mullarney. Having won the order of merit and graduated from Alps Tour in 2023 thus securing his playing status on the Challenge Tour for 2024, Ronan looks at the game a bit different then most. Very business-like and matter of fact on his approach, we should keep an eye on this shrewd operator for the year and with his rising start in golf hopefully see him raise more silverware this season.
