03 Feb 2020 | OWNING IT: What it's like to live with OCD and what we get wrong about it | 00:56:53
For this episode I am joined by fellow journalist and podcaster Aisling Keenan (her podcast is Private Education which is all about sex and relationships, she has a live event happening in Dublin soon and tickets are available here). Aisling is a very open person but something she's never discussed openly is her experience of OCD with which she was recently diagnosed. I wanted to understand more about this condition as it's so wrapped up in misinformation and it's so often trivialised. If you're someone with OCD I hope you'll find this comforting and if you know someone who struggles with OCD, I hope that you'll feel that little bit more informed after listening so that you are better able to support them. 09 Dec 2019 | OWNING IT: People pleasing and how to say no with author Sarah Knight | 00:39:15
People pleasing is a big driver of anxiety. For this episode of Owning It I am thrilled to be joined by New York Times Bestselling author Sarah Knight. She wrote the Lifechanging Magic of Not Giving A Fuck and has gone on to write a whole series of No Fucks Given Guides, the latest of which is Fuck No: How To Stop Saying Yes When You Can't, You Shouldn't Or You Just Don't Want To. Sarah shares her own inspiring story of anxiety with me, how life has changed since her days as a book editor in Manhattan (she now lives in the Dominican Republic) and how she's learned the art of suiting herself and ultimately benefitting her wellbeing and her anxiety. Fuck No is available in the UK and Ireland from December 12th, 2019. Subscribe to my patreon here - it would mean the world! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 17 May 2021 | Owning It: Understanding your anxiety using the 5 Ps | 00:48:45
For this final episode of Owning It The Anxiety Podcast (season 5), I am joined by Dr Clare Kambamettu who was actually my very first guest ever on Owning It. A clinical psychologist and wonderful speaker, Clare distills anxiety into something we can very easily understand. For this episode we look at the 5 Ps to help us better understand where our anxiety is coming from, what keeps it going and how we might find a way beyond it. It's a common exercise within CBT, a psychological formulation that many therapists will explore with their clients. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 13 Sep 2021 | The Mind Gut Connection with neuroscientist/gastroenterologist Dr Emeran Mayer | 00:51:35
For this episode I am going back to where it all started for me: with gut issues. Diagnosed and plagued with IBS for most of my teenage years, I had no awareness that a lot of what I was experiencing was anxiety manifesting in this way. My tummy issues made me anxious, my anxiety made me have tummy issues. I am joined here by the world renowned author of The Mind Gut Connection, Dr Emeran Mayer. (I wrongly title it the gut brain connection in my intro so apologies for that!) He is not just a gastroenterologist but a neuroscientist too and where these two disciplines overlap, you know there is a lot to be learned. I hope you find this episode helpful and validating. 03 Jul 2019 | Owning It: Rozanna Purcell shares her anxiety story and key learnings | 00:44:38
For this episode I am joined by bestselling author and entrepreneur behind Natural Born Feeder, Roz Purcell to talk about her experience of anxiety. Roz has some incredible insights into how and why we might be feeling more anxiety these days and how we need to get of the numbers game: numbers on the weighing scales, numbers of followers, numbers of books sold - the lot. She believes that if we invested as much time into ourselves offline as we do online, things would be different. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Welcome back to season 5! For this episode I want to introduce you to my brand new. book - NAKED: Ten Truths To Change Your Life. It's what I've been working on since wrapping up the last season. It's all about the power of vulnerability as a tool to create a calmer life. In it I explore ten sometimes uncomfortable truths about our thoughts feelings and behaviours that cause us stress and discomfort and set about finding an alternative path. For this introductory episode, I wanted to share some of my favourite chapter which is all about what I call The Vulnerability Paradox. 28 Sep 2020 | Owning It: My Mother on how to support someone you love with anxiety | 00:58:17
For this episode I am joined by my lovely mammy Aideen to talk about what it was like for her to see me, her daughter, go through a very tough time with anxiety and help listeners when it comes to articulating their anxiety to their parents if they find that their parents don't understand. This is also a great episode to ask a family member to listen to in order to support you. She talks about what she learned about mental health, anxiety and how things have changed since her generation when anxiety was never spoken of and mental health issues were put down to 'suffering with your nerves'. I hope you find this episode helpful and thanks to my mammy for being a great sport. 13 Apr 2020 | Owning It: What is a 'stretch zone experience' and why is it important? | 00:12:40
Hi guys, in this second episode of season 3 I am drilling down into some of the content explored in my second book, The Confidence Kit. I am looking at the comfort zone model and the importance of what's called a stretch zone experience when it comes to owning our anxiety and building our confidence. I talk through the ideal scenario so that we are not feeling excessive anxiety at any point but are not so stuck in our comfort zones that we are not growing our challenging our anxiety so as to ensure it doesn't own us. 08 Feb 2021 | Owning It: Let's talk about the fear of being publicly shamed | 00:52:47
For this episode I am joined by Ali Ryan, CEO and founder of popular website GOSS.ie. Ali kindly shares her story with me, after having experienced public shaming following a sexual encounter with a former partner that she had assumed was private but found out it had been recorded and then shared without her consent. The anxiety that ensued was crippling for this woman who now bravely opens up about something that to this day is incredibly difficult for her. We also talk generally about public shaming, cancel culture and how nasty things can get online, which can be such a source of anxiety for all of us listening too. 12 Jul 2021 | Owning It: Is Your Anxiety A Habit? With Dr Judson Brewer | 00:51:05
Welcome back to season 6! Dr Judson Brewer is legit amazing; he has his own neuroscience lab in which he and his team carry out lots of research to back up everything you'll find in his latest book Unwinding Anxiety, which is probably one of the best books I've ever read on the subject. In it, and in our conversation here, Jud puts forward the idea that maybe anxiety is simply a habit loop we've got stuck, something that plays out several times a day in the format of trigger, behaviour, result. It's a really interesting and empowering idea because when you start to wrap your head around it, it becomes something you can better manage or almost hack. 13 Jan 2020 | Owning It: Bressie shares his anxiety story and best coping mechanisms | 00:52:28
This week I am so happy to be joined by the man who goes by one name only - Bressie. Bressie has been a major support for me through my own experience of owning it and getting my first book published and despite his hectic schedule and his own brilliant podcast - Where is my mind podcast - he took some time out to sit down with me and have a long chat about his own experience. What was happening in his life when his anxiety reached its apex, why he decided to share it with the world, what changed when he did, what he hopes to see changing at a wider societal level now and how he manages it to this day so that it never gets the better of him again. 06 Jul 2020 | Owning It: Brian Pennie's incredible story of overcoming anxiety | 00:48:53
To kick off this new series, of which there will be 15 episodes that mix world class experts on anxiety in with everyday people's anxiety stories, I am joined by the incredible Brian Pennie. I don't need to give him much of an intro because his story of overcoming adversity speaks for itself. Brian is a recovered addict, he's the author of the phenomenal memoir Bonus Time and he's now undertaking a PHD, spending his time educating people on psychology and neuroscience. At the root of all of what Brian has been through, you'll find anxiety. I don't doubt that his story will resonate, he has a wonderfully realistic relationship with anxiety these days and he also has some wonderful resources available to others via his website brianpennie.com. 11 May 2020 | OWNING IT: 8 Things We Get Wrong About Anxiety | 00:15:44
In this solo episode, alongside a therapeutic breathing exercise to help relax the mind and body as you listen, I offer 8 common misconceptions we can have about anxiety that serve only to enhance the anxiety itself. These are 8 beliefs I held that quite literally held me back from getting to a point of owning it and feeling better. 11 Oct 2021 | Millie Mackintosh talks panic attacks, social media and her experience of anxiety | 00:52:54
For this bonus episode I was so thrilled to sit down with (virtually) Millie Mackintosh. I have long been a fan of Millie's, particularly since becoming pregnant and seeing how open and honest she is about the experience. She keeps it real. Millie has had her fair share of anxiety down through the years and here she shares her story with me. We talk everything from the Made in Chelsea days when panic attacks were a common experience, to pre and postnatal anxiety, the anxiety of having millions of people watching and judging you on social media, IBS and so much more. As she's about to have her second baby, I'm so grateful to Millie for taking the time to chat and be so honest as always and allow herself to be vulnerable. 20 Jan 2020 | Owning It: Stopping Social Comparison Induced Anxiety | 00:15:49
This week it's just me for a brief solo episode to hone in on some of the less obvious drivers of anxiety. I'm focusing particularly on social comparison here and in future episodes will look at imposter syndrome, perfectionism, people pleasing and the likes, all of which can enhance our levels of anxiety without us really being aware. Here I offer my practical approach to handling social comparison induced anxiety, what I've done to make it a whole lot easier and why temporal comparison is more motivating than social comparison will ever be. 23 Dec 2019 | OWNING IT: Blindboy shares his anxiety story | 00:53:11
This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Blindboy - of the very successful The Blindboy Podcast - and author of his latest book Boulevard Wren and other stories. Blindboy tells me about his experience with anxiety as a young adult, the origins of that anxiety, how he looks after himself these days and everything he learned from his psychotherapy studies. We also talk about anxiety among men and how to get comfortable with uncomfortable feelings. Blindboy has a unique way of articulating what anyone who has experienced anxiety has felt and I really enjoyed chatting with him. His book would be a great stocking filler this Christmas! 15 Jun 2020 | Owning It: How to manage anxiety as we come out of lockdown | 00:12:12
This is the last episode of season 3 before season 4 launches in just a few short weeks. The topic? Just as we had to adapt into lockdown and deal with all of the anxiety that brought fore, so too will it take a little bit of time to adapt back to whatever our new normal will be. There might be some social anxiety, our bodies have been conditioned to be hyper vigilant to protect us from the virus so it could feel unnerving to be back in close proximity to others and in general we've all gotten used to living a much smaller life. Here's exactly what to be mindful of as you get back to normal. Plus 12 questions to always ask yourself whenever you feel panicky or anxious. In this solo episode, I talk through exactly what I do when I feel anxiety rising, which happened again just last week. I talk you through my practise of taking pen to paper, exactly what kind of questions I ask myself and how I put myself back in the driving seat which helps to ease the anxiety massively. Is your neurochemical landscape vulnerable? In this expert episode I'm joined by Stephen Travers, of stravershypnosis.com who helps me to gain a further understanding of what's happening in our brain when we experience anxiety. At points we get very technical but I strongly believe that knowledge is power in the face of anxiety. In this episode, Dermot Whelan, comedian and radio presenter Dermot Whelan talks shares his story of anxiety, how he burned himself out to the point of arriving at a comedy festival (where he was due to perform) in an ambulance. After reaching this crescendo, Dermot eventually found meditation, and though it was somewhat underwhelming, he noticed a much calmer version of himself begin to emerge. Now he is a meditation teacher and has learned many techniques to dissolve anxiety, which he shares here. With humour and simplicity, Dermot will convince you that focusing on your breath is perhaps your most under utilised anxiety reducing tool. 02 Aug 2021 | OWNING IT: Johann Hari on why we're anxious | 01:05:41
Johann Hari is a really interesting if somewhat controversial character. He is a prolific journalist, an NYTimes bestselling author and his Ted Talks on the reasons why we might be anxious/depressed has been viewed a staggering number of times. He too also struggled significantly with anxiety and depression. He has some really hard-to-argue-with insights on the various reasons why we collectively struggle so much: we have a series of unmet needs, or as his book title suggests, we are suffering from various lost connections. Here he chats to me about some of the key reasons why we struggle (according to him and the research he has done around the world chatting with experts) as well as what we can do about it: social prescription, questioning our junk values and more. 15 Feb 2021 | Owning It: Why Don't You Like Me? With Stefanie Preissner | 00:57:52
For this episode I am joined by the brilliant writer Stefanie Preissner for what I would say is my most radically honest and open conversation on this series to date. Stefanie and I talk about therapy, smart ways of finding the right person for you and knowing whether or not it's working for you, we talk about Stefanie's own anxiety, the fact that she is currently in the midst of not feeling so wonderful (and so often we only talk about bad times once we've come out the other side of them), we talk about both of our needs to be liked by others and we also discuss an issue that had bothered us both: I thought Stefanie didn't like me (she had blocked me on Instagram) and Stefanie thought I didn't like her (so she decided to block me from her Instagram). Both of us feeling the same anxieties, grappling with the same fears and so we talk it out. I hope you find this one as refreshing to listen to as I found discussing it. 27 Jul 2020 | Owning It: What you probably didn't know about exercise for anxiety with Dr Kelly McGonigal | 00:41:11
For this episode I am so excited to be joined by a guest that i have so long wanted to feature on this series. Her name is Dr Kelly McGonigal. Her Ted Talk has inspired so much of what I do and has informed so much of my mentality and approach towards managing anxiety. In this episode we talk about exercise for anxiety and let me tell you, having recently published a new book about the neuroscience of exercise called The Joy of Movement, her insights are mind blowing. I did not realise half of this stuff. I'm pretty sure I say 'wow' after every answer to every question! Then we talk about compassion too and I don't doubt that if you're enjoying the series so far, you will love this episode. 15 Mar 2021 | Owning It: Men and the stigma of admitting they're struggling | 00:47:28
For this episode I am joined by Gareth Mullins, head chef and self described perfectionist and high achiever at Dublin's 5 star hotel The Marker. Gareth reached out to me a few years ago to say he was struggling, he didn't understand why and he didn't want to admit that he was having a hard time with anxiety. He went to the doctor, who suggested medication, which he didn't want to take because to him that meant admitting defeat or weakness. Here we talk about the stigma that unfortunately still lingers around mental health, particularly when it comes to men. Is there room for anxiety in a high pressure, nothing-less-than-perfection work environment? There needs to be. 04 Jun 2019 | Owning It: Cassie Stokes talks heartbreak, agoraphobia and prawn-induced anxiety (yes) | 00:45:59
As mentioned in the podcast intro, here is the link to my upcoming event in The Alex hotel. It's a publishing masterclass for anyone who's ever dreamed of writing a book. There will be more events coming soon specifically themed around anxiety so stay tuned for those. This week Cassie Stokes of Xpose fame joins me to talk about her recent experience of heartbreak and the anxiety that goes along with it, as well as how anxiety manifested for her from the age of 20, including a fear of prawns, a fear of people in large crowds, a fear of being sick on modes of transport and more. Through therapy and CBT skills that she still uses to this day, she's managing it well. She knows it will always be there but she understands it and has the coping mechanisms necessary to own it. 01 Mar 2021 | Owning It: Self worth with Greg O'Shea | 00:40:52
For this episode I am joined by Greg O'Shea, Rugby Sevens star here in Ireland who shot to fame across the UK and Ireland after appearing on Love Island. A reality TV series where everyone wants a piece of you, and as soon as you do something that doesn't please the masses, you're down over 700,000 instagram followers. Is it possible to keep self worth and such a measurable metric of success separate? How do you cope with the opinions of the world coming at you? Greg talks death threats, remembering what's important and knowing how to measure his self worth and keep anxiety at a level he can manage. For 25, he has an impressive perspective on what counts and what doesn't (25 was the age I was when everything fell apart for me) and almost without realising it, he has cultivated a set of skills for keeping his mental health in excellent condition these past few years. He's a genuinely nice, humble guy who knows how important it is to normalise mental health struggles and I was delighted to have him as a guest. 06 Sep 2021 | Owning It: How to handle unexpected change | 00:50:15
Sometimes in life, things change or thing go drastically downhill, without any forewarning. For Jane Enright, author of Butter Side Up, big, negative life changes occurred to her 3 times within the space of one year. 3 changes that would leave almost anyone in the throes of anxiety, negativity and hopelessness. But Jane realised she already had a lot of the skills necessary to get through this, if she just tapped into them, now that she really needed them. In this episode she shares her story with me, and how she handled the anxiety that went along with such traumatic incidents as well as how we can better process the things in life that happen that we do not see coming, so that they don't swallow us up. 27 Dec 2021 | What to do when the news gives you anxiety | 00:41:00
Word of warning: My guest's audio wasn't ideal for this episode, there was very little I could do about the feedback issue on Dr Clare's side of the audio, so I hope you can forgive this. Hopefully next time I record with Clare we can be in person in studio. For this episode of Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast, clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu joins me to discuss the impact that consuming news around the clock can have on our minds and bodies. Maybe that's social media, maybe that's news on your TV, and it's especially relevant now with Covid. We are facing a very legitimate threat with Covid and keeping tabs of all of the latest news surrounding the virus has become a coping mechanism for many of us. We think it benefits us but if you're aware of it, it might be making you feel more anxious. So what can we do about it? How do we stay informed without overwhelming our threat system? 03 Jan 2022 | Why are we anxious when we can't control things? | 00:50:47
This week, and as we are at the very beginning of the new year, I'm tackling the subject of anxiety and change. I've covered this subject before but this time I am joined by Dr Harry Barry, author of Embracing Change, and one of my most listened to guests on the podcast thus far (he was on a previous episode where we unpacked anxiety at a more basic level). The change that requires you to take action and the change that comes at us out of the blue; we cover both. Also in this episode we go off on a helpful tangent, talking about our (mostly MY) need to be in control. What's happening in my mind when I get anxious when I can't control things exactly how I want to? And what can I do about it? Read Dr Harry Barry's latest book here. 10 Jan 2022 | Trauma: Anxiety after the Storm | 00:52:01
For this episode I am joined by a friend, Simone Gannon (also known as Simone Scribes on Instagram). She's big on social media for her skincare expertise and has amassed a huge following. Simone recently took to Instagram to share something she wouldn't normally: chats about her experience of crippling anxiety that saw her in and out of hospital with symptoms of a suspected stroke. Here she shares her story with me, as she is passionate too about normalising anxiety and also talking about it while we are still in the thick of it. Her experience of anxiety follows a traumatic experience she had involving her son. As is very common, when we experience something really tough, we are filled with adrenaline and our bodies have our backs while we 'get through' what needs to be done. When the dust settles, the anxiety can swoop in and force us to process things we hadn't yet addressed. This is Simone's story and I hope it's of some comfort to you those of you listening who have been in similar situations. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 17 Jan 2022 | Let's talk body image anxiety | 00:53:12
Body positive influencer, model and activist Jessica Megan joins me on Owning It this week to talk through the anxiety that so many of us grapple with - women in particular - that centres around our image. What we see in the mirror, how we talk to ourselves about how we look, what we think we 'should' look like. Jessica shares her story, detailing her turbulent teenage years where she was surrounded by diet culture and slimming world meetings, some tools and mindset swaps that she finds helpful as well as us talking through my own difficulty with being kind to my body after having a baby and feeling anxious to 'bounce back'. Given the timing of our discussion, we also talk through how she's handling Covid related anxiety. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 20 Jan 2022 | What if I'm always this anxious? | 00:18:16
One of the main characteristics of anxiety is that when you feel it, you believe that you will always feel it, that it will always be there. You can't accept that a day would come where it wouldn't dominate, when it's become chronic for you. I had these fears and worries too, I thought I would never be okay, and that there's so much in life I'd never get to experience from travel to love to having a child to public speaking, but do you know how many of these things anxiety has held me back from? None. In this short solo episode I talk through the fears I had, the things I thought I would never be able for but, because I owned my anxiety, I was eventually able to achieve. I hope you find this episode uplifting and hopeful if you are struggling with chronic daily anxiety at the moment. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Front man of global music sensation Kodaline - Steve Garrigan. - shares his personal story with me. Louise has amassed a huge audience for normalising life with toddlers, she is a tonic for any parent fed up with the more sanitised portrayal of parenthood that pervades social media. Here she shares her experience of anxiety with me, from her teen years as a model, where it manifested as an eating disorder, right through to becoming a parent of three children and the anxiety that hit many of us like a tonne of bricks: Covid. For Louise, and for all of us watching, humour and her brilliant videos became her release. Sometimes anxiety manifests as anger. Anger is the 'fight' in 'fight or flight' and it's often misunderstood. Anger is something we're taught never to show, but it is a valid emotion. What can we do when our empathy leaves us feeling overwhelmed? How do we support ourselves when trying to support others? 28 Mar 2022 | Owning It: Brian Falduto's Story | 01:13:12
Follow me @OwningItPodcast on Instagram. Brian Falduto - known as 'that gay kid' from School of Rock with Jack Black. Brian and I recorded for both of our podcasts so here you will hear me talk a bit about my own story too which I know you've heard before. Brian tells me his experience with anxiety which - though it has been building his entire life - really only surfaced quite recently and it is only now something he is confronting. Brian talks in particular about his experience after the movie came out, the bullying he endured for the character he played - which Brian says was just Brian - and the shame and homophobia he turned back on himself as a teenager. Eventually, this coupled with other lifestyle factors, would lead to Brian experiencing some pretty rough anxiety that became quite debilitating. So he went on to Spotify to find some podcasts on the topic, and he came across me. Enjoy and do follow Brian on TheGayLifeCoach as well as his own BrianFalduto page. She shares her experience of crippling anxiety with me and how she had to hit rock bottom to turn it all around. She shares how the expectation to be a certain way and follow a certain path led her to one day, finding herself on all fours in the grips of a panic attack and having no choice but to acknowledge that her body was trying to tell her something. How would she explain this to her family? What's it like to have mental health struggles in a community where it is still hugely stigmatised as weakness? 20 Jun 2022 | How your environment feeds your anxiety, a neuroscientist explains | 00:42:43
My most listened to guest of all time returns: Dr Micheal Keane. We're talking about how our environment - less so about the plants and the clouds, more so technology, social media, news, what we consume - feeds into this collective basal anxiety we probably all experience, even without being fully aware of it. This is such an interesting discussion that makes you think twice. We also hone in on fast fashion and consumerism. Remember Lily Allen's lyrics - I am a weapon of massive consumption, it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function'? Well that kind of sums up this episode. Crucially, he offers his expert advice on realigning with your values and moving towards your green circle (calming) to outmanoeuvre the machine. 27 Jun 2022 | Why judgement makes us anxious with Dr Soph | 00:47:15
Have you ever felt anxious after being judged by someone? Or perceiving that you might be judged? The fear of judgement and the impact of judgement are huge sources of anxiety. But judgement is such an enormous topic, it's a lot to unpack. Helping me do just that is @DrSoph (Dr Sophie Mort), author of A Manual For Being Human and clinical psychologist. We talk about passive aggression, gaslighting and other forms of judgement. Why we fear it, why it matters so much to us. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 04 Jul 2022 | Therapy: what kind do I need? | 00:46:38
This is a very practical episode where I explore - with the help of clinical psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu - the various types of therapy (not including alternative therapies) that you might encounter when seeking out help for managing anxiety. From psychologist to clinical psychologist, psychotherapist to psychiatrist, it can all become a little overwhelming at a time when, if you're looking for help, you're probably already pretty overwhelmed to begin with. Therapy is something we know little about until we start asking questions, so I hope this episode demystifies some of it for you. Join me on @OwningItPodcast for more. 25 Jul 2022 | Manifestation: Bad for anxiety? | 00:53:29
Do you believe that you are what you think? I'm not sure I do. This week I'm talking about the manifestation trend and the law of attraction that suggests that what we think or put out into the universe, we receive. Different to positive thinking, I feel that the popularity of manifestation might contribute to anxiety. I talk to scientist Dr David Robert Grimes about the ways in which it might be harmful, why it might not be doing your anxiety any good and how liberating it might be to realise that you are not what you think. This is the final episode of season 8 and it's just me. I'm talking through some of my biggest learnings from this season. One helpful conclusion I've come to? Maybe your anxiety is a compass. 03 Oct 2022 | Owning Your Boundaries | 00:43:43
For this episode I am honing in on the world of boundaries. Here's the thing: boundary setting can give us anxiety in the first place, but living our lives devoid of boundaries can give us anxiety in the longterm which is what we don't want. I am joined here by 6-time New York Times Bestselling Author Melissa Urban, CEO of Whole 30 and now the author of The Book of Boundaries to talk about this unrecognised source of our collective anxiety, how to handle boundary push back, why a lack of boundaries gives rise to anxiety and why it's important that we also work on how we perceive other people's boundaries too. How to handle tantrums, meltdowns, hard days and irrational toddlers without being left reeling in stress and anxiety yourself. 24 Oct 2022 | When anxiety comes after the trauma: Debbie's story | 00:50:17
Sometimes we go through something that you think would bring a huge amount of anxiety down on top of us, but it doesn't hit us until we're out the other side. That's exactly what happened for Deborah Somorin. Here she shares her story - documented in her new book Believing In Me - about being taken into care at the age of 11, becoming homeless and pregnant and welcoming her baby boy when she was just 14 years of age. Despite the adversity she faced, Debbie went on to achieve incredible things and it wasn't until she was living a 'normal' life that anxiety eventually reared its head, along with imposter syndrome. 13 Dec 2023 | ARCHIVE: Surviving Christmas Holiday Anxiety | 00:22:22
I was going to record a new episode for this year but it would pretty much run the same as last year's so for anyone who needs a reminder - I'm bringing this one back to the top of the pile for the month that's in it. In this episode of Owning It, I'm talking about the various contributing factors that can give rise to anxiety at Christmas time (or 'the holidays' if you're in America/Canada). Why do we feel more pressure at Christmas? How can we shift our mindset to make Christmas more enjoyable? And looking ahead to the new year, when the self care machine goes into overdrive, I'm talking about how I'm approaching January with a goal of self maintenance over constant self improvement. Sign up to Owning It Real Time HERE This is an episode I recorded a few weeks ago with the brilliant Dr Leah Katz. She's a clinical psychologist and bestselling author (her book is called Gutsy), she's been on the show before to talk about people pleasing, but here we are talking about relationship anxiety, but more specifically anxiety in our friendships which I think is a hugely under explored topic. We also touch on how to communicate your actual anxiety either to a friend or in a romantic relationship but as I say the thrust of our chat is on friendships and something I was really excited to learn about: dual realities. 02 May 2023 | Emetophobia: the fear of vomiting and being sick | 00:23:49
Sign up for Owning It: Real Time HERE My son was very ill last week so I had to cancel four recordings (sob) so alas it is another solo episode but given the theme of my week I've decided it's time to talk about emetophobia - or a lighter version of that which I think I experience - which is the fear of vomiting. Here I discuss the characteristics of emetophobia, how I handle looking after my son when he's unwell and how I coped through my own recent experience of feeling that I would, any minute, throw up. I hope this episode is of some reassurance or comfort or familiarity that you are not alone - nor are you mad - for having the fear. Sign up for Owning It Real Time HERE. If you are facing into exams - be it your Leaving Certificate, your A Levels, your state exams - anything at all which requires an examination - you will be familiar with anxiety. That feeling of pressure, that so much appears to be riding on this one test. While I can't change the system that sees the way we're educated culminate in one high pressure exam at the end of the year, I can offer tools and techniques to help manage the anxiety that for a lot of us, at some point in life, will be inevitable. These are major life skills that will apply well beyond exam time too. For this I am joined by Mary Bradley. Mary specialises in teen wellbeing. She's been a secondary school teacher for 10 years and is also a trained breathwork and meditation instructor and life coach. Mary works with teenagers to help them push past a variety of challenges in particular exam anxiety. With online workshops and meditation classes Mary helps students sit their exams feeling calm, focused and prepared and she also just has a lovely soothing donegal accent so listening alone will surely downregulate your stress response here. 10 Sep 2023 | Why your anxiety is so physical + how to get rid of social anxiety for good | 01:04:01
I can't write a title long enough to capture all that's in this episode but it is a banger. It is probably one of the most helpful ones I've ever recorded. It's practical, it's back to basics to some degrees and while I set out to talk with an expert about the physical manifestations about anxiety and how to manage those, such as understanding depersonalisation for example, the conversation really wound up being a very essential grounding for understanding the anxiety we experience and then, of course, it's jam packed with really smart and sensible ways to get on top of that anxiety. It's with Dr Harry Barry who I've had on twice before. He's always one of my most listened to guests. He has a new book out, The Power of Connection, which he'll discuss. He also shares what he believes is a surefire way to cure yourself of all social anxiety. The first 15 minutes are dedicated to social anxiety. As an essential add on to this episode, and for a real time way to practice the flooding technique he discusses, I really advise you sign up to my limited library of real time audio guides to help you with anxiety and panic, which I've called Owning It Real Time. Sign up here. I don't often promote my episodes as much as I should but for this one, well if I'd heard it when I was in the throes of anxiety myself, it would have saved me a huge amount of suffering. Bookmark it and come back to it as often as you need. Thanks for listening. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 17 Sep 2023 | Anxiety advice from a 102 year old | 00:57:38
Sign up to Owning It Real Time HERE. For this episode I am joined by the most incredibly inspiring woman, I was just hanging on her every word. her name is Gladys McGarey, she is 102 years old, she recently published a book called The Well Lived Life and she has quite the story to tell. We talk about anxiety today versus what she knew of it when she was starting out as a physician, her own experience of anxiety through her separation (after 46 years of marriage and six kids!), carving out a space for herself in a male dominated profession, being judged by other women and being taken seriously as a doctor. She shares a lot of sage advice about getting older and she's just a wonderful storyteller. The story about Mahatma Gandhi is one of my favourites from our chat. I hope you'll enjoy this chat and take something from it, I know I did. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. 25 Sep 2023 | 'How holding my breath taught me to live': how this free diver manages anxiety | 00:56:16
Sign up to Owning It: Real Time HERE. Subscribe to my brand new Substack HERE. This week I am joined by Claire Walsh, bestselling author and free diver. Having watched The Deepest Breath on Netflix, I realised how much we can differ when it comes to finding the thing that helps to downregulate our stress response. For many people, the idea of plunging down into the darkest depths of the sea, in one single breath, without all the breathing paraphernalia would be enough to send them into a state of panic. It is certainly not for everyone and it requires major training and experience and it's high risk but for those who describe themselves as free divers, this activity can be how they manage their stress and anxiety. Here, Irish free diver Claire tells her story and what she's learned from holding her breath in the water which she can apply to her life on dry land. PS: I've recently launched a substack where I'm sharing a weekly column. Anxiety will be a regular theme but there'll also be discussions about parenting and work and relationships, such as how I've managed to build a reliable revenue stream from podcasting. You can sign up at carolineforan.substack.com Some content is free to read but you can pay the price of a fancy coffee per month to read the juicier stuff. For now, enjoy this episode.
