Welcome to the second season of Out of SPACE, a podcast by SPACE hosted by artist Cathy Lomax. In this episode of Out of Space’s Care series, we examine how winning a prestigious award affects an artist’s practice. Once you’ve gained recognition, what next? How do artists navigate the pressures and expectations for their work after achieving such fame? To discuss this, we are launching our new season with a special episode featuring Turner Prize-winner and SPACE studio artist Laure Provoust in conversation with Lina Lapelytė, known for her award-winning collaborative work Sun & Sea (Marina) at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Cathy Lomax talks with Lina and Laure about their respective practices, which often involve collaborative and interactive elements and finds out more about Lina’s latest sound installation Here Hear Hare Hair which is on show at SPACE Ilford until 30 September 2022. You can listen to the Out of SPACE podcast on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts and your web browser. 02 Feb 2023 | Care: How to - Carry on Practising | 00:57:20
This episode is one of two practical ‘how to’ guides (the other will look specifically at how to show your work). Together with artists Milly Peck and Luke Burton, Cathy explores the things we can seek out, do, and engage with, that will move our career forward and bring our work to the attention of the artworld, and very importantly allow us time, space (and motivation) to develop as an artist. The experiences, views, opinions and recommendations presented in the podcast are the speakers’ own. 02 Feb 2023 | Care: How to - Show Your Work | 01:00:05
This episode is focussed on ‘how to show your work’ and is one of two practical ‘how to’ guides (the other focuses on ‘how to carry on practising’). Showing work usually means engaging with a gallery but negotiating the world of galleries can be very confusing for emerging artists (and established artists to be honest), as there are so many different categories and sub-categories such as commercial, not-for profit, institutional, artist-run, hire spaces etc, all with their own ways of working. For many artists gallery representation is a sought-after validation of their status. But can we have a successful career without this? If we do work with a gallery how much commission should we expect to pay on the works we sell? And if we don't, how do we figure out the price we should sell our work at? To discuss these questions, Cathy is joined by artist Hannah Brown and curator / gallerist Kristian Day. The experiences, views, opinions and recommendations presented in the podcast are the speakers’ own. The content does not constitute professional, financial or legal advice from SPACE and any reliance on it is at the listener’s own risk.

16 Sep 2021 | Care: Carefree | 00:51:03
In this episode of Out of Space’s Care series we are looking at the creative process and considering if making good art means taking less care - that is thinking less, relying on instinct and letting things happen. This theme brings to mind something Jean Dubuffet wrote about art brut (or outsider art as it has come to be known) and in particular the untutored artists he was inspired by: ‘Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses – where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere – are, because of these very facts, more precious than the productions of professionals.’ To discuss creativity and artmaking we have two artists who both work with paint in very different ways, Jennifer Campbell and Erin Lawlor. 16 Sep 2021 | Care: Walking the Line: Between Copy and Remake | 00:57:55
This episode of Out of Space’s Care series is all about the themes and sources of information that come together to inspire and make an artwork what it is. We are going to be looking at this from the very particular position of copyright, and consider how this works in practical terms, alongside some more conceptual ideas around inspiration, remakes, reproduction, fakes, copies and authenticity. To discuss this fascinating subject, we welcome two guests: visual artist Hugh Mendes and art collector and art and intellectual property lawyer Jon Sharples. 16 Sep 2021 | Care: Presentation | 00:47:56
In this 'Presentation' episode of Out of Space’s Care series we are going to be looking closely at the way that artists not only present their work and frame their practice, but also present themselves. By framing I don’t literally mean the frame you put your painting, drawing, print or photograph in (although this is obviously important) but more about how you talk about and present your work to collectors, art professionals, the general public and other artists. Amongst other things we will be looking at studio visits, networking and presenting your practice online. To discuss their presentation both physica, and online, and to give advice on studio visits, we welcome artist and SPACE associate Tobi Alexandra Falade and curator, mentor and coach for creatives Ceri Hand. 17 Sep 2021 | Care: Community | 01:08:01
In this episode of Out of Space’s Care series we are going to be looking at 'Community' – that is the support networks and groups of artists that come together in both formal and informal ways, as well as the idea of working with communities of people in a wider sense. It’s notable that this year’s Turner Prize shortlist is made up entirely of artist collectives. Tate Britain Director and chair of the Turner Prize jury, Alex Farquharson stated that ‘After a year of lockdowns when very few artists have been able to exhibit publicly, the jury has selected five outstanding collectives whose work has not only continued through the pandemic but become even more relevant as a result. To talk about collectives, communities, artist-led and artist-initiated activities, and consider how being in an artist-gang can be empowering, we welcome two artists Serena Korda and Emma Cousin.
