| |||

On this episode the new theatrical release of POLTERGEIST has us diving into research on the difference between a haunting and a poltergeist and the differences between the 1982 original film and the 2015 remake. And unfortunately we don't have a mutual love of Sam Rockwell to save us from the evil spirits, instead discussing the haunted year of 1999 for Liam Neeson's career, the scary aging process of CGI effects, and also where you can find us haunting other podcasts.

Find out which film we chose, the original or the remake, and also which centerfold graces Mike's wall.

To find out for sure, listen to our discussion with our horror expert guest Derek Stewart.

19 Dec 2015 | Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Force Awakens | 01:14:06
On this episode we look at the striking similarities between the newest chapter in the Star Wars saga, THE FORCE AWAKENS, to the first film A NEW HOPE. Warning for those strange folk who may listen to an ORIGINAL REMAKE episode before seeing what is already one of the most popular films of all time (and we appreciate you!) but there be spoilers ahead as we talk about many of the same story beats that these two films share, and how Episode 7 puts a modern touch on them.

30 Jan 2016 | The Secret in Their Eyes 2009 and 2015 | 00:57:32
We get someone topical by questioning the Academy Awards choices, though we are stuck in 2009 with the winner of Best Foreign Language Film, THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES. We talk about the differences in style, tone, and relevance with the little seen English remake starring Chiwetel Eijofor, Nicole Kidman, and Julia Roberts. This will definitely be our most downloaded episode.
31 Jan 2016 | Ocean's 11 and Ocean's Eleven | 01:09:36

We attempt to pull off the ultimate heist by making you think Original Remake is on iTunes and Stitcher.
16 Feb 2016 | The Secret Life of Walter Mitty 1947 and 2013 | 00:49:24
We discuss Ben Still remaking a film to far greater effect than ZOOLANDER 2 with the 2013 version of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY. Listen to us compare the fantasies of not one, but TWO Walter Mittys. Do we daydream about Danny Kaye patter-songs? Or maybe Ben Stiller punching Adam Scott in his very punchable face is more our tempo. Either way, all of your fantasies will be fulfilled in the latest episode of ORIGINAL REMAKE.
01 Mar 2016 | Assault on Precinct 13 1976 and 2005 | 00:39:02
On this episode we protect the integrity of Precinct 13, or more accurately Precinct 9, Division 13. Shane Conner, co-host of the podcast War Machine vs. War Horse, bunkers down for a debate on the appropriate amount of cheese, how far we have NOT come in film casting since 1976, and the possibility of future remakes for this John Carpenter classic. But for now, we try to survive the 1976 and 2005 versions of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13.
16 Mar 2016 | Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down | 00:42:27
In this episode our hosts take a tour of the White House twice with the films Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down. Do they choose Gerard Butler or Channing Tatum as their tour guide? Is this the only chance for Lindsay Lohan to better Jodie Foster in an acting performance? Does Jamie Lee Curtis' 2003 rendition of "...Baby One More Time" have us traveling back to the 1976 version as quickly as we can? Find out the answer to these very important questions in our latest episode!
27 May 2016 | Captain America 1990 and 2011 | 00:42:36
We have our own civil war with two sides of Captain America. The first being the failed release of his 1990 adventure which ended up making its way direct to video in 1992. The much higher budgeted Marvel Cinematic Universe version in 2011 introduced Cap as The First Avenger and was the last solo MCU film before a little arthouse success in Joss Whedon's Avengers the following year. This one isn't much of a debate, so we bring in Master Sergeant Bill Paxton as a true threat to the guy wielding the shield.

In this episode the original hosts of the show, Mike and Peter, are back just in time for an alien invasion involving Keanu Reeves and placenta armor. But before we get to Scott Derrickson's 2008 remake, a look back at the original Cold War era film from 1951 when Gort robots could bend their knees and could predict the future heroic quests of a man with a chainsaw for a hand. Then we predict a newer version of this film which involves The Chastain. Then again that's our hope for every future remake.

Find out on this episode along with many other things like the meaning of getting "in the pink" and the announcement of an ENTIRELY NEW PODCAST from Alyssa and your hosts Mike and Peter!

In this episode where we compare a comedic caper to it's more toned down remake, we recruit Daniel of GET REEL MOVIES to join in on the heist with us to talk about THE ITALIAN JOB! What starts out is your traditional comparison and discussion leads to allegedly picking on our Canadian friend and his love for Aaron Sorkin.
19 Apr 2017 | The Social Network and The Founder | 00:53:28

28 Apr 2017 | The Ring and Rings | 00:29:53
On this episode we celebrate (?) the old fashioned format of video for the video release of RINGS which came out earlier this year... not that anyone noticed. But guest Alice Bishop did! And we discuss this reboot of the original remake THE RING from 2002, which carries on the tradition of this franchise always being slightly behind the times from a technology standpoint and better uses of the idea such as 2015's IT FOLLOWS. This episode may sound pretty negative but it includes one of my favorite live cover performance, so there's that.
23 May 2017 | Moon and Oblivion | 00:47:21
Being mostly unsatisfied with the weekly reboot and clones that Hollywood presents us every week we head to space to find our own in two older films: Duncan Jones' MOON from 2009 and Joseph Kosinski's OBLIVION from 2013. Can multiple Sam Rockwells take on the star power of Tom Cruise? Which A.I. do we want to take orders from, Kevin Spacey or Melissa Leo? And is there something to be appreciated in a copy? We certainly hope so on that last question as that's the premise of this podcast.
30 May 2017 | Wonder Woman 1974 and 2011 | 00:43:53

26 Jun 2017 | Top Gun and Days of Thunder | 00:56:04
For this much Cruise on this episode of ORIGINAL REMAKE, we have to bring on a fellow Tom Cruise enthusiast and a man who understands the need for speed in Jason Michael from ATLANTIC SCREEN CONNECTION. We discuss the glory days of star power without the need for a franchise, even if TOP GUN and DAYS OF THUNDER share so many similarities they could almost be about the same character. Of course the music, mentors, and ridiculously named rivals change. So join us as we decide if we like our Cruise delivered by ground or air!
12 Jul 2017 | Drive and Baby Driver | 01:01:58
On this episode we turn to a baby podcaster himself, Dan of Get Reel Movies, a film site that caters to millenials. We ask him his take on Edgar Wright's version of the stoic getaway driver in BABY DRIVER, under the assumption that the hosts of this show are just too damn old to get it. However a love for Ryan Gosling and the film DRIVE knows no age barriers as we rave about that film and then get into the meat of modern online film criticism: which driver has the best playlist for conducting cool chase sequences? All of this and we find out that Canadians aren't that nice in the latest episode of ORIGINAL REMAKE. ALSO: Be sure to check out Dan's interview with DRIVE screenwriter Hossein Amini on his podcast GET REEL MOVIES. 31 Jul 2017 | The Beguiled 1971 and 2017 | 00:39:34
On this episode film critic Alice Bishop joins us at the lovely Civil War era bed and breakfast as found in the 1971 and 2017 film version of THE BEGUILED. We discuss the differences in seeing Colin Farrell and action and western icon Clint Eastwood in a state of vulnerability and how one increases the horror of the situation in these similarly plotted films. The accusation of whitewashing in the new Sofia Coppola version is discussed as is the different interests between her and the original's director Don Siegel. All in all its a lovely time where we exchange mushroom recipes. ALSO: Our friendship survives a minor disagreement on the merits of Blake Lively in shark flicks. 09 Feb 2016 | The Ladykillers 1955 and 2004 | 01:12:33
For all of our podcast valentines out there we present A Very Problematic Episode on how to lie, cheat, steal, and manipulate your way to success with the ladies. To do so, we of course don't share any actual life experience but take in a double feature of the 1955 LADYKILLERS starring Alec Guinness and the 2004 Coen brothers remake starring Tom Hanks. We look at not only the cultural differences between the English and American versions, but also how the 2004 version would be received in 2016. And of course some Batman and James Bond talk with guest Derek Stewart because... hashtags.

On this episode hosts Mike and Peter decide to enroll in the SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS instead of seeing Melissa McCarthy's THE BOSS. We discuss how the scoundrel curriculum has changed from the 1960 original to the 2006 remake taught by Billy Bob Thornton. And being the great students that we are, we make some recommendations for staffing in a future version of this story.

It's 2021 and there's a new cut of JUSTICE LEAGUE and a new SUICIDE SQUAD......so everyone must be happy, right? WRONG says Dave of YOUR LIST, MY COMMAND. However his co-host Derek (of the much better THE GRAND GESTURE podcast) calls ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE "better than my own child." Which extreme opinion do you fancy? Find out by listening to an awful lot of debate over funny books on film in our episode on the two Justice Leagues. 09 Nov 2021 | Home Alone | 00:35:18
In 1990 moviegoers learned how to call a small child "incompetent" in French. And then the world would know Kevin McCallister's wrath... or at the very least Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern who got a bit too handsy with Christmas goods. Among other crimes. On this episode one host looks upon with horror as he continues to procreate while the childless host looks on in equal horror at what he's done. Then we enjoy a holiday classic with the Chris Columbus directed original in the HOME ALONE cinematic universe. 15 Nov 2021 | Home Alone 2: Lost in New York | 00:29:06
In 1992 a sequel to a huge holiday hit just needed to change the villains method of thievery from wet to sticky.Ignore the above description of HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK... we assure you that this is a family friendly film. Presumably certified as such by existing on the Disney+ platform until the end of time. On this episode we discuss sequels essentially serving as a remake by doing a cinematic version of jumping the shark in a very special vacation episode where Macaulay Culkin travels to New York to meet up with his old punching bags Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Along the way all three are disgusted by a lady covered in bird poop. Happy holidays! As he speaks with us from the comfort of his gaming chair some important matters discussed in the world of MORTAL KOMBAT:
Also we get around to discussing the first feature film adaptation from 1995 and the new HBO Max joint. Because Liu Kang needs no defending. In preparation for a holiday weekend of no traveling we attempt to comfort you with some scary tales passed down from the 1998 film URBAN LEGEND. Perhaps the one about the killer waiting in the backseat of the car. Or the scratching sound coming from outside the car on Lover's Lane. Even the one about Tara Reid's career. Truly terrifying. All of this and some love for the great thespians coming out of the even greater state of Kentucky in our latest episode! 31 Jul 2020 | Reboot: THE NEXT KARATE KID (1994) | 00:31:08
In which our hosts agree that Hilary Swank could beat us all up (especially those ANIMAL CROSSING player DORKS) but we can't agree with this franchise going into bowling comedy. Alas this attempt to reboot THE KARATE KID succeeds mostly with comedy of the unintentional variety, which is where both Michael Ironside and ORIGINAL REMAKE come in. Enjoy! 12 Apr 2020 | When Harry Met Sally and Always Be My Maybe | 00:43:07
On Easter we celebrate the ultimate New Year's movie... which we planned to release on Valentine's Day... and perhaps you could blame the slow editing crew for missing a better joke release date of April Fool's... but YOU KNOW WHAT?? Anytime is a good time to revisit WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... and for at least one of our co-hosts its also a holiday to rewatch one of his favorite films of 2019 in ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE. We discuss the chances of both couples as friends and lovers, the speeches given, and Billy Crystal's unfortunate white man's overbite. Happy holidays... all of them! We conclude the "I Know What You Did.." series with the sequel to the 1997 hit and talk about the problematic Jack Black and more of Jennifer Love Hewitt. 30 Aug 2020 | Original: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997) | 00:36:12
As we wind down the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad summer of 2020 why not make ourselves feel better by at least NOT being stalked by a smelly fisherman with a hook? To make this even more appealing we spend perhaps an unhealthy amount of time talking about Ryan Phillippe's butt, Jennifer Love Hewitt's chest and our complete lack of trust in Freddie Prinze Jr. to do a hard day's work. But he did marry Buffy! All of this is to say watching I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER was a better time than a pandemic summer. Even if everyone smells of fish. 14 Sep 2020 | Reboot: I'LL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (2006) | 00:31:27
In one of the worst movies ever reviewed on this podcast, we attempted to find positive things to talk about in a sequel no one asked for. With a decent idea with a twist on a retelling of the 1997 film I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997), this installment failed to present anything in the franchise worthy of digging back up. 26 Jan 2021 | The Apartment and Wicker Park | 00:46:33
David Giannini has unfortunately started a new podcast called OFF SCREEN DEATH. That's bad. But his co-host is the co-host of this show, Mike Denniston. That's good. However as part of the promotional tour for OFF SCREEN DEATH (that's the name of the new movie podcast that is half good and half bad) Dave is the guest on this episode for THE APARTMENT and WICKER PARK. That's bad. But the episode is good. We promise. We make fun of Josh Hartnett's hair, Matthew Lillard's face and feud over rights to love Rose Byrne all before Mike starts talking about large breasts in French cinema. It's more good than bad. No longer the podcast bad boys we once were it's time to come to terms with the fact that our goatees are white and not only are our dreams of being as cool as Will Smith not happening... we may not be as cool as Martin Lawrence. 18 Oct 2020 | Original: THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) | 00:39:31
Getting yourself in the mood for the Halloween season is easy if one tries to emulate the passion shared between Raul Julia and Angelica Huston's respective versions of Gomez and Morticia Addams. And while one host was really into the attacking of Christmas carolers and sword-fighting sunshine that dares to enter the marital bed of this great couple... the other was glad that the filmmakers decided to cut away before that passion went too far. But there is no cutting away on Original Remake. Enjoy a month of THE ADDAMS FAMILY as we begin with the 1991 feature film adaptation! 30 Apr 2020 | Fright Night 1985 and 2011 | 00:56:28
While the practical applications of horror classic FRIGHT NIGHT might have always been in doubt, in the age of social distancing we see two neighbors truly crossing lines in both the 1985 and 2011 versions of these comedic takes on the vampire genre. And while one host likes his vampire neighbor a bit more aggressive when he comes over to borrow a can of beer the other host, perhaps due to his southern gentlemen upbringing, prefers the charm of an unbuttoned shirt and a come hither gaze. I believe you appropriately in the mood for our long-awaited episode on FRIGHT NIGHT. Jairo of MARK AS PLAYED joins the show to suggest that while Ralph Fiennes is no body builder... his version of a serial killer is still "a touch on the sexy side." This is just the beginning of disagreement as Mike defends the honor of ORIGINAL REMAKE by siding with Michael Mann's version of this Hannibal Lector adjacent story in MANHUNTER and our idiot guest sides with Brett Ratner. Not just RED DRAGON but Brett Ratner. And that's not even mentioning the tiger penis sequence... though our guest does. Repeatedly. Enjoy! In a battle between two Ritas, Andie Macdowell fights Emily Blunt for the hearts of hosts Peter and Mike as they look at films that share the similar concept of reliving one day over and over again. Do we choose the comedic and ice sculpting skills of Bill Murray? Or maybe the rare sighting of a cowardly Tom Cruise running away from a fight is more our speed? 11 Oct 2017 | Blade Runner 2019 and 2049 | 00:30:21
For our episode celebrating the release of BLADE RUNNER 2049, the sequel to the classic Ridley Scott sci-fi film, we debate the big questions. Not if Deckard is a replicant, but just who thought that this film was going to be a big box office success? Certainly not our guest, Dave of POP CULTURE CASE STUDY, who gives one super fan's response to this universe's continuation. Meanwhile our host Mike continues to lament not the darkness of this particular sci-fi world, but the fact that this visual feast of a movie looks much better on his iPhone than his local theater. Two weeks in a row we have Dave Hart of Pop Culture Case Study to help us figure out our fixation with WONDER WOMAN, other than the fact that it's a very likable movie. We compare that summer crowd pleaser to the crowded love story in the new release PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN. This discussion focuses on the origin of this iconic superhero character and how that has shifted over time, but more importantly if it shifts our opinion of the character as seen in the Patty Jenkins film. Also because we can't behave ourselves, we pitch a sequel with Chris Pine flying the invisible jet in a very special way. For our Halloween episode this year we celebrate... Mother's Day? The ultimate love letter to all the moms out there is Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO from 1960 and to prove that love we are doubling down by revisiting the not-so-loved Gus Vant Sant remake of PSYCHO from 1998. This newer version being an attempt at a shot for shot remake, we discuss the style, casting choices, and strangely how dated the newer film seems compared to the 1960 version. We of course try to create the perfect couple out of the two on-screen pairs of Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher going up against Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, but also the great supporting characters played by Lake Bell, Greta Gerwig, and Mindy Kaling. This is a first in ORIGINAL REMAKE, although it will not be the first time we do a little sports talk radio. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on if you are a baseball fan, one host has to break these movies down in basketball terms and the other still laments Kevin Durant not making his way to the Celtics. Guest Web Bist returns to ORIGINAL REMAKE discussing possibly host Mike's ALL TIME FAVORITE FILM in Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW. Is the enthusiasm shared for 2007's loose remake DISTURBIA? Well, no, but we have a lot of fun with this one debating the nuances of how we can root for peeping tom Jimmy Stewart, who chooses his creepy activities over a life with Grace Kelly... and yet we still hate Shia Labeouf SO MUCH MORE. So maybe none of this is surprising, but to wrap up these shownotes with some bit of new information... Web and Mike have a new podcast coming soon called TRILOGY TALK.
